- 0:58Speaker 2: Juicy Scoop. Hello and welcome to Juicy Scoop. Well, I
- 1:03Speaker 2: have the fitness queen of all queens, Denise Austin is here.
- 1:09Speaker 2: And the burst of energy that came after your hour
- 1:12Speaker 2: drive from Hermosa Beach, I don't even, now I realize
- 1:15Speaker 2: why you look the way you look. At, can I
- 1:17Speaker 2: say your age? Of course you can. You're 66. 66. Ridiculous.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And feel my tummy. I want to feel your abs after.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I felt Heather Dubrow's abs and hers were good. And
- 1:28Speaker 2: my Pilates instructor said, I heard your show. And she's like,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and we're going to get those abs down. And I go,
- 1:33Speaker 2: you know, I've got Denise Austin coming. And she goes,
- 1:35Speaker 2: I have one question for her. I thought this was
- 1:38Speaker 2: a good question. As a fitness person, and she's a
- 1:40Speaker 2: fitness person. If there was one exercise, one move, that
- 1:46Speaker 2: someone could only do for the rest of their life,
- 1:49Speaker 2: what would that be?
- 1:50Speaker 3: Oh, a plank for sure.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:52Speaker 3: A low hover plank, to be honest with you. Get
- 1:55Speaker 3: down on the elbows and hold it and tighten up
- 1:58Speaker 3: your tummy. Pull up and in your tummy and your abs.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Zip up those abs as long as you can. I
- 2:04Speaker 3: do it for about a half a minute, and that
- 2:06Speaker 3: way it keeps it nice and strong.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And it's the same.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Ab exercise that actually helps keep your tummy flat. Okay.
- 2:13Speaker 2: So it's the transverse abdominus.
- 2:15Speaker 3: That's the one that's underneath right there that's always going
- 2:19Speaker 3: to keep your abs pulled in.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And good posture is very important. Because if you're slouched,
- 2:23Speaker 2: your tummy.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Has nowhere else to go but out. But if you
- 2:26Speaker 3: sit up or stand up nice and tall, it has
- 2:29Speaker 3: a place to stay. Tucked in. So pull it in.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Always seek good posture. It's the key to a flat belly. Wow.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We are off and running. Welcome to 2024 Fitness Game. No,
- 2:41Speaker 2: I want to talk to you about your exciting life
- 2:44Speaker 2: and how much you've done. I have a photo here,
- 2:47Speaker 2: which is the then and now. I have this photo.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 2:51Speaker 2: What are the ages of you here? This is incredible.
- 2:54Speaker 2: You're wearing the same suit, bathing suit, in red with
- 2:58Speaker 2: a zipper. You look exact... Your body looks exactly the same.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Your hair is a little longer today. But how old
- 3:05Speaker 2: are you in the first one? That was when I was.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Well, I had just had my second baby, so... That
- 3:11Speaker 3: was 35 years ago.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I guess I was 30-something. Yeah.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Wow. And then this is just about a month ago.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Wow.
- 3:20Speaker 2: So this is right away. So this is this year.
- 3:23Speaker 2: 66 and I guess 36 maybe. Well, it was so
- 3:28Speaker 2: exciting to get the email from your people. to have
- 3:31Speaker 2: you come on. Aw, thank you. Because my husband was like,
- 3:35Speaker 2: you know, my husband works with me too. Oh, I
- 3:36Speaker 2: know Peter. And so he's like, you know, do you
- 3:39Speaker 2: want Denise? And I was like, oh my God, yes.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And so then when I was gathering up the information,
- 3:44Speaker 2: the email, I'm like, whoever is on her team must
- 3:47Speaker 2: be a juicy scooper because what they wrote Was everything
- 3:51Speaker 2: we have in common? Well, it's my sister. No, I mean,
- 3:55Speaker 2: it's a publicist.
- 3:56Speaker 3: But my sister is in love with you, and she
- 3:59Speaker 3: talks about you forever. And I was so excited, you know,
- 4:02Speaker 3: when Diego, my publicist, said, Heather.
- 4:07Speaker 2: You know, you can maybe be on Juicy Scoop. I go, oh,
- 4:10Speaker 2: my God. Oh, my God. I go, first person.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I go, of course, sister.
- 4:13Speaker 2: My sister, one of my sisters. Who is a juicy scooper. Oh,
- 4:16Speaker 2: she's big time. Yeah, she's been to a lot of
- 4:19Speaker 2: your live performances. She went to the San Diego.
- 4:21Speaker 3: With her daughter.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I love it. I get so many mother-daughter combos. And
- 4:26Speaker 2: now mother-son too. So I love that. Couples and everything. Sisters,
- 4:30Speaker 2: lots of sisters come. But I love a mother-child because
- 4:34Speaker 2: it's like, Oh, a large demographic. Absolutely. So I appreciate
- 4:39Speaker 2: that so much.
- 4:40Speaker 3: And now you even have my niece's little son who's
- 4:43Speaker 3: one years old. Whenever the podcast comes on twice a week,
- 4:48Speaker 3: she puts it on and he starts dancing.
- 4:50Speaker 2: He loves your music. Well, that's Jenny Poulos who did
- 4:53Speaker 2: the music. And she actually is a mother of young kids.
- 4:56Speaker 2: And she has done kid rap music. Oh, she? So
- 4:59Speaker 2: she should look into it. If there's a, you know,
- 5:02Speaker 2: she has like raps about potty training and stuff. Oh, okay.
- 5:05Speaker 2: So I think the kids really. She'll be needing that.
- 5:08Speaker 2: She knows how to get that. He's one and he
- 5:10Speaker 2: loves you. I love it. The whole family loves you.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Cross the board. It's so sweet. I'm one of five.
- 5:16Speaker 2: That was the other thing. Three sisters. One five. What
- 5:18Speaker 2: number are you? I'm middle. Okay. You're the middle. Number five.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Out of five, you're Catholic.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Catholic. Born and raised by aunts and nuns.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Oh, really? She was the principal at Immaculate Heart High
- 5:29Speaker 3: School here in Hollywood. Where Meghan Markle went.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 5:33Speaker 3: But my aunt was a little older than that.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 5:37Speaker 3: She did teach Lucille Ball's daughter. Oh.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yes. Really? That's interesting.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yes, she did.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Oh, that's great. Yeah. So I'm from a very Catholic family. Wait,
- 5:48Speaker 2: is your aunt still here?
- 5:49Speaker 3: No.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Okay. She passed many years ago.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:51Speaker 2: She did. So we love to go. Wait, was she
- 5:54Speaker 2: one of the, was she part of?
- 5:55Speaker 3: She was part of the change. So she was a
- 5:58Speaker 3: pioneer of getting rid.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Of the habits.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Yes. So if you look back into 1970s, it was
- 6:06Speaker 3: the Immaculate Heart nuns that kind of said, okay, we're
- 6:10Speaker 3: not going to be wearing these habits anymore.
- 6:12Speaker 2: We're taking them off and we're going to be lay teachers.
- 6:14Speaker 3: She went from Sister Cortona to Sister Marianne, her real name,
- 6:18Speaker 3: which no one ever knew her real name. So she...
- 6:22Speaker 3: We could all look it up, and she was one
- 6:25Speaker 3: of the pioneers of it.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Women liber, but in the way of Catholics. The nuns
- 6:32Speaker 2: that taught at my schools, which was St. Mel's and
- 6:36Speaker 2: Louisville High School right over here, Sisters of St. Louis,
- 6:39Speaker 2: they're teachers too. Maybe my first... Early years of being
- 6:47Speaker 2: in school, I remember they had the habits on their hair.
- 6:50Speaker 2: But then, yes, most of them, some of them would
- 6:52Speaker 2: still choose to have the habit. They didn't want to change. Right.
- 6:54Speaker 2: But all throughout my high school, they would just wear, like,
- 6:57Speaker 2: a navy skirt and a blouse and just, like, a
- 7:01Speaker 2: little sweater, hair, you know, normal, nothing covering their heads. And, yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 2: they were the teachers. Oh, no. So that's so cool.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I love that. I went to Catholic schools my whole life.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Out here in Southern California? Yes.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Bishop Montgomery High School in Redondo Beach.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Oh, I love it. I'm from Palos Verdes. Oh, you're
- 7:19Speaker 2: from Palos Verdes. Okay. And then you went to U
- 7:23Speaker 2: of A.
- 7:23Speaker 5: Yes.
- 7:24Speaker 3: And I got a full athletic scholarship. It was the
- 7:26Speaker 3: first year women were, you know, Title IX were offered
- 7:29Speaker 3: scholarships for athletics.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Wow.
- 7:31Speaker 3: And Today, I brought you my first leotard I wore
- 7:35Speaker 3: when I competed at the University of Arizona.
- 7:38Speaker 2: There it is. And it still fits, Heather.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Very, very cute. Wow. And they still have gymnastics teams, right?
- 7:49Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Oh, that's great. I love it.
- 7:51Speaker 3: So that was kind of cute. And then I spoke
- 7:54Speaker 3: as a commencement address speaker at one.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Of the graduations. When were you able to do that? Oh, gosh.
- 8:00Speaker 3: About 16. 16 years ago maybe and when you got
- 8:05Speaker 3: what I did what tell me what you did okay
- 8:08Speaker 3: so you know when you're a commencement you have to
- 8:10Speaker 3: well I don't know I just want to say it's
- 8:12Speaker 3: one of my things that I've been manifesting no.
- 8:15Speaker 2: School has asked me yet oh that.
- 8:18Speaker 3: You should do it especially for the Louisville the high
- 8:22Speaker 3: school it's my understanding that I'm probably a little too
- 8:26Speaker 3: edgy maybe Maybe, because the Catholic girls are still there.
- 8:31Speaker 2: So, and then USC, I'm still hopeful that they'll ask me.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Oh, they will.
- 8:36Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Were you part of the Annenberg, like my daughters?
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yes, yes. Okay, you should be speaking there. And, of course,
- 8:40Speaker 2: they've had Will Ferrell do it. And Will Ferrell and
- 8:43Speaker 2: I knew each other in college. He dated my sorority sister.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Stop it. And I also knew him at Groundlings.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 8:48Speaker 2: He was a few years older than I am, but
- 8:50Speaker 2: we were there at the same time. Oh, wow. And
- 8:53Speaker 2: they had him speak. Now he's a much, much bigger
- 8:55Speaker 2: star than I am. But I'm putting it out there.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So when you got the word that you're doing it,
- 9:01Speaker 2: how did you come up with your speech?
- 9:04Speaker 3: Well, I came up with my speech to help people
- 9:07Speaker 3: realize that no matter what you do, you can do
- 9:10Speaker 3: something that you feel comfortable with. And I just kept saying,
- 9:14Speaker 3: it took me 35 times, phone calls to the Today
- 9:17Speaker 3: Show to get on for the very first time in 1984.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I would call Steve Friedman. Thirty-five times to finally I
- 9:24Speaker 3: got it.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Just yourself was calling. Oh, you betcha. And what would
- 9:26Speaker 2: be your pitch? Ding-a-ling-a-ling. Hello, it's Stacia. May I help you?
- 9:29Speaker 6: Yes.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Dr.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Steve Friedman, I'm sorry. He's not available.
- 9:33Speaker 3: And I said, this is Denise Austin, and I could
- 9:36Speaker 3: do exercise. You've never had fitness on your TV show.
- 9:39Speaker 2: They never had done fitness? No, this is 1984. So
- 9:42Speaker 2: you were the first person to think, why don't they
- 9:45Speaker 2: do a fitness segment?
- 9:46Speaker 3: Yes, and I said, I just wrote a booklet called
- 9:48Speaker 3: Tone Up at the Terminals, an exercise guide for computer operators.
- 9:52Speaker 3: So I have some interesting exercises I could teach everybody.
- 9:55Speaker 3: And she would laugh and she goes, I'll let him
- 9:57Speaker 3: know you called. Boom.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I'll let him know you got one day. No, wait,
- 10:00Speaker 2: at this time, let me ask, wait, I have questions.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You're so energetic, but I do have questions and I'm
- 10:04Speaker 2: doping to cut you off, but I have to. So
- 10:07Speaker 2: at this time was like, um, okay. Remember the bosom, the, the, uh,
- 10:12Speaker 2: the workout buddy people, um, The man and the woman
- 10:16Speaker 2: that would do like a workout. That was like must
- 10:18Speaker 2: have been the 70s. Do you remember that?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Well, that's called Jack LaLanne. He gave me my first
- 10:22Speaker 3: start on television.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Jack LaLanne did. So he did. So when you were
- 10:25Speaker 2: on the Today Show in the 80s, who was the
- 10:29Speaker 2: guy that would wear nylons and had the curly hair? Oh,
- 10:32Speaker 2: Richard Simmons. Had Richard Simmons been around before you?
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Oh, he came at the same time.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I mean, he came a little earlier than I am.
- 10:38Speaker 3: He's a little older than I am.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Okay, so get back to your thing. So you were just...
- 10:42Speaker 2: Just a go-getter. Yes. I didn't care if anyone said no.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I didn't care.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I tried another thing. So I thought to call it
- 10:49Speaker 3: a different time. I called it 6 p.m. that night.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And Steve Friedman, I went, oh, my God, that's the
- 10:54Speaker 2: executive producer.
- 10:56Speaker 3: He answered because I was calling very politely 9 to
- 10:59Speaker 3: 5 before.
- 11:00Speaker 2: This time I tried at a different hour.
- 11:02Speaker 3: And he answered. And I told him. I could get
- 11:04Speaker 3: down on the floor and show you sit-ups and show
- 11:06Speaker 3: you the best way to flatten your belly. And he
- 11:08Speaker 3: didn't say anything on the other side.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Hello, are you still there?
- 11:11Speaker 3: Yeah. And he said, oh, yeah, you could come this
- 11:14Speaker 3: week and present. So I presented him. I got, he
- 11:17Speaker 3: was in Rockefeller Center.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Now, were you living in New York at this time? D.C. Okay.
- 11:21Speaker 3: My husband and I got married in 1983. He's a
- 11:23Speaker 3: sports attorney and he, We needed to move to D.C.
- 11:28Speaker 3: because he represented tennis players and then basketball players. But
- 11:32Speaker 3: his sister's Tracy Austin, she was number one at the time.
- 11:35Speaker 3: His best friend was in tennis.
- 11:37Speaker 2: She won the U.S. Open, still youngest ever in the
- 11:40Speaker 2: history of the U.S.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Open to win. At age 16, she beat Martina, and
- 11:45Speaker 3: then two years later she beat Chrissy Everett.
- 11:49Speaker 2: How did you guys meet, you and your husband?
- 11:50Speaker 3: My husband and I, I was standing up an aerobics
- 11:53Speaker 3: studio in 1981 inside a tennis club. And he in
- 11:57Speaker 3: the West End Tennis Club in Torrance. And he was
- 12:01Speaker 3: warming up Tracy, his sister, to kind of get her ready,
- 12:04Speaker 3: prepared for the US Open. And because he was a
- 12:07Speaker 3: lawyer in Beverly Hills.
- 12:08Speaker 2: So he was a lawyer, but he played tennis as well. Oh, yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 3: He played at UCLA. He was, you know, they won
- 12:14Speaker 3: two NCAAs with him.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Oh, he was on the team. That's amazing. He was
- 12:17Speaker 2: on the team. Yeah.
- 12:18Speaker 3: All of my entire family, my husband, myself, and my
- 12:22Speaker 3: two daughters all played, got scholarships in.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Active in, you know, sports.
- 12:28Speaker 3: So I did gymnastics, my husband tennis, and both daughters
- 12:31Speaker 3: went on scholarship for girls lacrosse.
- 12:34Speaker 2: So D1 program. At USC. Well, my oldest went to
- 12:37Speaker 2: University of Virginia. Okay. And she was number one in
- 12:39Speaker 2: the nation because she was really tough, good. Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 3: And then my baby, Katie Austin, she went to USC,
- 12:45Speaker 3: the first inaugural women's team at USC.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Oh, wow. I know.
- 12:50Speaker 4: So.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Okay, so get to the romance. So you're at the
- 12:54Speaker 2: Torrance thing. Yes, Westin Tez Club.
- 12:57Speaker 3: I walk by with the owner of the club, the manager, owner.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And I said, damn, they're good.
- 13:03Speaker 3: He goes, well, that's Jeff Austin, Tracy Austin. She's ready
- 13:07Speaker 3: to go.
- 13:07Speaker 2: They got us open.
- 13:08Speaker 3: I went, oh, wow. So then he showed me my room.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Back in the day, in 1981, there were no gyms.
- 13:15Speaker 3: There were no aerobics studios. So I had to teach
- 13:17Speaker 3: in little rooms or racquetball courts. To start, you know, aerobics.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I'd bring my little, you know, cassette player.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah, your little.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I'd have my little routine. And so they showed me the,
- 13:28Speaker 3: he showed me the room I was going to teach
- 13:30Speaker 3: my aerobics in.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And, like, what would you make doing that?
- 13:33Speaker 3: Well, at the time, I had 30 different instructors that.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Went to, one went to Kaiser Hospital. I did all.
- 13:40Speaker 2: You were in charge of all those people.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Yes.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Oh, so you had formed already a little business. A
- 13:44Speaker 2: little business, yes. Oh, my God. And how old are
- 13:46Speaker 2: you at this point?
- 13:47Speaker 3: I graduated from college, and I was two years out
- 13:50Speaker 3: of college.
- 13:52Speaker 2: You're 24 doing this. Doing this, yes. Good for you.
- 13:54Speaker 3: And I would give them each a cassette player and
- 13:58Speaker 3: a tape. You go here at TRW at 5 o'clock,
- 14:01Speaker 3: and you move all the tables, and you teach aerobics.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Here's the routine.
- 14:06Speaker 3: So I was teaching four classes a day, you know,
- 14:09Speaker 3: back in the day. And so I was figuring out
- 14:13Speaker 3: which room I get at the tennis club. And so
- 14:16Speaker 3: then when I came back to, you know, get something
- 14:19Speaker 3: to drink with the guy, in comes Jeff and Tracy,
- 14:22Speaker 3: and they come here, meet the new aerobics director.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I was like, oh, I got the job.
- 14:27Speaker 3: And so he gave me a piece of paper, like
- 14:30Speaker 3: a contract, and They said, this is, you know, Jeff Austin,
- 14:33Speaker 3: he's the lawyer of the Austins because he's one of five, too.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Oh, wow. And so I said, do you want to
- 14:38Speaker 2: look at this?
- 14:39Speaker 3: I was teasing him because it was a contract, you know.
- 14:42Speaker 2: To be the aerobic instructor. Yes.
- 14:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Like a dollar, you know, if you're a member, you
- 14:46Speaker 3: could come to my aerobics class. Two dollars if you're
- 14:49Speaker 3: not a member.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:50Speaker 3: And so he laughed and that was it. And the
- 14:53Speaker 3: next day he called and asked me out.
- 14:55Speaker 2: How did he ask you out? He just called my
- 14:57Speaker 2: house and asked me out. So would you like to
- 14:59Speaker 2: go out to dinner?
- 15:00Speaker 3: Yeah, to dinner.
- 15:01Speaker 2: That was our first date. And did you feel a
- 15:04Speaker 2: moment when you met him like this is it?
- 15:06Speaker 3: Yes, because he's so funny and he's so smart. And
- 15:09Speaker 3: I had not gone out with such brilliant people before.
- 15:13Speaker 3: I always had surfers or, you know, I don't know,
- 15:17Speaker 3: not anyone so intelligent. So I was really like in
- 15:21Speaker 3: love with his smart. And he was funny, really dry
- 15:24Speaker 3: sense humor right away. We got married a year later.
- 15:27Speaker 2: You did. And moved to Washington, D.C. And then how
- 15:30Speaker 2: did you know he was the one? Oh, he asked me, like, early.
- 15:36Speaker 2: And he said, I love you really fast. I was like, ooh.
- 15:39Speaker 3: But he had never gone out with a girl past
- 15:41Speaker 3: three months. And he's five and a half years older
- 15:43Speaker 3: than I am. So when I was at four months,
- 15:46Speaker 3: the family was like, Oh, my gosh. You know, Jeff
- 15:50Speaker 3: is so serious.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I was like, why? He goes, he never went past
- 15:53Speaker 2: three months with anybody but you. So I was like, oh, okay.
- 15:56Speaker 2: And everybody and all the families liked each other.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 16:00Speaker 2: My whole family.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Our Thanksgiving is a blended family. My family, his family,
- 16:06Speaker 3: all our siblings, 41 at our Thanksgiving every year.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I love that. At our house.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I hosted our Thanksgiving and we were supposed to be 27,
- 16:14Speaker 2: but it went down to 23. It's been more in
- 16:16Speaker 2: the past, but some of the kids are, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 2: going to law school and stuff like that of the cousins.
- 16:23Speaker 2: But we have a big thing too.
- 16:25Speaker 3: The car is beautiful.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Where did you end up going for it? This exclusive
- 16:29Speaker 2: place that Dad has connections with. They have more cars
- 16:32Speaker 2: for more dealerships than like anywhere else. You have to
- 16:34Speaker 2: put me in touch. What's it called? It's Dune ADL.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Where?
- 16:40Speaker 2: Dune ADL. There's an accent on the E.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Do you mean.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yes, I got it on Done Deal Cars.
- 16:46Speaker 5: Lift, please.
- 16:47Speaker 2: You going past Kimmage?
- 16:49Speaker 3: Oh, Kimmage.
- 16:50Speaker 4: No.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Done Deal Cars. You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
- 16:55Speaker 5: I'm Darman, and this is What Happens Next. Each week
- 16:58Speaker 5: on the show, I sit down with extraordinary people who
- 17:01Speaker 5: have faced tremendous setbacks, and yet somehow have found a
- 17:06Speaker 5: way to turn them into their greatest strengths.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Life is one long lesson of chaos.
- 17:11Speaker 3: I'm heading to the Emmys, and I have police complaints
- 17:14Speaker 3: filed against me.
- 17:15Speaker 4: When your free will was about to be taken from you,
- 17:17Speaker 4: what would you do if it was given back? Where
- 17:20Speaker 4: did that need come from, where you thought that you
- 17:22Speaker 4: had to succeed in order to feel loved? He said,
- 17:25Speaker 4: I have a work dad.
- 17:26Speaker 5: I need a home dad.
- 17:27Speaker 4: What happens next?
- 17:28Speaker 5: When I came in, he started crying.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Everybody in life encounters hardships. What defines them is not
- 17:34Speaker 4: those hard moments that they go through. It's about what
- 17:37Speaker 4: happens next.
- 17:38Speaker 3: I decided to risk it all.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I realized how valuable every day was. You're worth the work.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Listen, Dara, I'm not going to pull punches.
- 17:44Speaker 2: You can use your voice even if it's shaped.
- 17:47Speaker 5: The stories are different, but the impact is the same.
- 17:50Speaker 5: Only one question matters. What happens next?
- 18:00Speaker 2: So, okay, so getting back to the Today Show. So
- 18:04Speaker 2: now you're in D.C., you're married, you're young, you don't
- 18:08Speaker 2: have kids yet.
- 18:09Speaker 3: No, and I wear little shorts to, you know, the
- 18:12Speaker 3: Safeway back east, and people looked at me, you know,
- 18:15Speaker 3: back in the day.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Was it weird to go? Washington was very conservative.
- 18:19Speaker 3: We would go to parties with, Jeff had to wear
- 18:21Speaker 3: a coat and tie in 1983. 84, 85.
- 18:25Speaker 2: It was very conservative. Was it... And I wore a
- 18:28Speaker 2: leotard everywhere. Being that you were Palos Verdes, beach girl, then,
- 18:33Speaker 2: you know, Tucson, Arizona. Was that a big transition to
- 18:38Speaker 2: go into cold weather and a more conservative dress place? Oh, definitely.
- 18:42Speaker 3: But I loved it. Our friends were.
- 18:44Speaker 2: My husband.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Played tennis at the White House.
- 18:47Speaker 2: We got to enjoy ourselves. You did? Oh, yes. Tell
- 18:50Speaker 2: me about that. Who was in office then? Was that Reagan?
- 18:53Speaker 3: Well, President Bush was vice president at the time, so
- 18:57Speaker 3: he loved tennis. So they always invited us to, at
- 19:00Speaker 3: the time, the vice president's house.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Oh.
- 19:04Speaker 3: He always played tennis with the president, so it was
- 19:06Speaker 3: really fun.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh.
- 19:07Speaker 3: So right away, we had the most wonderful experiences. And
- 19:11Speaker 3: every year, we were supposed to come back to L.A.
- 19:13Speaker 3: to have him open up the L.A. office for Octagon,
- 19:16Speaker 3: the company. And every year, no, it's okay.
- 19:19Speaker 2: No, we're having fun. And then we had babies, and
- 19:22Speaker 2: they love lacrosse. Okay, so how did you get on
- 19:24Speaker 2: the Today Show? So I called them. So what's the
- 19:26Speaker 2: 35th time, the 6 p.m.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Time?
- 19:28Speaker 2: Yes. Can you believe it? Okay. All right. And so
- 19:32Speaker 2: how long were you calling all the time? Like how
- 19:35Speaker 2: many weeks or months was that? Well, I probably wait
- 19:37Speaker 2: every– few weeks. So it was like almost a whole
- 19:39Speaker 2: year of calling. Probably.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Because I got on March 1984.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Okay. So you do your presentation. Yes.
- 19:47Speaker 3: And he's in the Rockefeller Center in the corner of
- 19:50Speaker 3: gorgeous office with a baseball bat in his hand, a
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yankees cap on his head, and he's in a beautiful
- 19:58Speaker 3: desk with his baseball bat just going back and forth.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I'm down on the ground showing the best sit-ups you
- 20:04Speaker 3: could possibly do.
- 20:05Speaker 2: To the executive producer.
- 20:06Speaker 3: To the executive producer who's practicing his swing while you're
- 20:09Speaker 3: doing this okay he's smiling and never saying a word
- 20:12Speaker 3: and i jump up and then i could show up
- 20:14Speaker 3: at the terminal exercises you know there's a lot of
- 20:17Speaker 3: neck issues out there because people are sitting in terminals
- 20:20Speaker 3: yeah so um he just smiled and then he gave
- 20:23Speaker 3: me a note and it said march 23rd 24th and
- 20:26Speaker 3: that was uh the first dates to go on my
- 20:29Speaker 3: on the show and within a year i had a
- 20:31Speaker 3: contract for four years So you went on it and
- 20:34Speaker 3: you were such a hit.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Yes. I got as many, one week, as many letters
- 20:38Speaker 2: as Willard Scott. Do you remember him?
- 20:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Our famous weatherman. And they were like, wow, that's when
- 20:45Speaker 2: I got my contract.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Because they want to know more about fitness. And so
- 20:50Speaker 3: by the contract, did that involve pay then?
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yes. Oh, yeah. But also then you couldn't go on
- 20:55Speaker 2: Good Morning America.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Got it. But I.
- 20:59Speaker 3: At that point, too, ESPN was just starting, so I
- 21:02Speaker 3: got my own show on ESPN. My whole goal was
- 21:04Speaker 3: a 30-minute show, not a three-minute.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Once a month, that's what I got.
- 21:09Speaker 3: So my goal was to have my own.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Getting fit with Denise Austin. And when you would do
- 21:14Speaker 2: all these things, was your husband then your attorney?
- 21:18Speaker 3: Yes, but I would kind of get the job, but
- 21:20Speaker 3: he would look at the contracts.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Nice. That wasn't his thing. No one knew.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Direction for an aerobics instructor I just made things up
- 21:30Speaker 3: and went along and I have my degree so I
- 21:33Speaker 3: felt very confident in my abilities I was very you
- 21:37Speaker 3: know being a gymnast I was used to performing.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Yeah you know my whole life and as a gymnast
- 21:44Speaker 2: as a child like when did you start.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Doing well I was late in life at 11 so
- 21:49Speaker 3: I never made it to I was lucky enough to
- 21:52Speaker 3: get an athletic scholarship.
- 21:53Speaker 2: And what made you at 11 go, I want to
- 21:55Speaker 2: learn gymnastics, Mom? I just loved it.
- 21:59Speaker 3: I went to the YMCA in San Pedro, California, and
- 22:02Speaker 3: they had a great gymnastics program, and I kept staying
- 22:05Speaker 3: and made the team, and I just kept going.
- 22:09Speaker 2: But you got the scholarship, but were you ever at
- 22:12Speaker 2: a level that you might have gone to the Olympics
- 22:14Speaker 2: or anything? Oh, no, no, I was never that good. No, no.
- 22:16Speaker 5: Okay.
- 22:16Speaker 3: No, everyone was.
- 22:18Speaker 2: So much better. Yeah.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Years ago, when you're first giving Title IX, the girls
- 22:25Speaker 3: my age were, the younger ones were way better. They're
- 22:29Speaker 3: the ones that made the Olympic team. They wouldn't have
- 22:31Speaker 3: thought to go to college. So I was offered a
- 22:35Speaker 3: lot of scholarships because it was the first year women
- 22:37Speaker 3: were offered athletic scholarships in 1975. And....
- 22:44Speaker 2: So that must have been really exciting when you guys
- 22:46Speaker 2: saw that that was going to happen.
- 22:47Speaker 3: For my mom to see these scholarships coming in, this
- 22:50Speaker 3: was like heaven.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Because I think people need to remember that, that that
- 22:54Speaker 2: was never even an option. No. They put all the
- 22:57Speaker 2: money into the men.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:59Speaker 2: And that's why they would call it an MRS degree.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Do you remember that? Go and meet your husband. Go
- 23:06Speaker 2: meet your husband and be a missus. But is it
- 23:10Speaker 2: worth it for us even to pay for you to
- 23:12Speaker 2: go to college? You know, if you're not going to
- 23:15Speaker 2: marry someone rich or, you know, become a nurse or
- 23:18Speaker 2: a teacher, like all those kind of things. And this
- 23:20Speaker 2: gave so many more women an opportunity to get the
- 23:23Speaker 2: scholarship money that men have. And I, you know, I
- 23:26Speaker 2: hope we protect it at all costs because, you know,
- 23:30Speaker 2: we have to because that's serious. And I believe in
- 23:33Speaker 2: young girls doing some kind of sports. Yeah.
- 23:36Speaker 3: I really do because I've seen the difference in just
- 23:40Speaker 3: the way they grow up with confidence. And they really
- 23:43Speaker 3: truly do, you know, feel, you know, kind of worthy.
- 23:47Speaker 2: At something that they try hard for. Right. You have
- 23:50Speaker 2: to work at it and commit to it. There's an ethic.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Like my girls are great. They have a great work ethic.
- 23:55Speaker 3: And I think that's so important for girls.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Yeah, because I think when you're on a team, even
- 24:00Speaker 2: if it's not going to lead to scholarships or whatever,
- 24:03Speaker 2: it is great to show if your child does want
- 24:07Speaker 2: to do something, whatever that might be. But especially if
- 24:11Speaker 2: it is a sport, you know, you have to commit
- 24:13Speaker 2: that you're going to go be there at the 6 a.m. workout.
- 24:16Speaker 2: That's right. And camaraderie. Right.
- 24:20Speaker 3: And you just, you know, besides being active, which is
- 24:23Speaker 3: so important for me, I think it's really important. To
- 24:26Speaker 3: start early in health and wellness and feel better.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Yeah. It really does matter. And it could be dancing.
- 24:32Speaker 2: It could be any form.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Just something you're committed to to show that you can
- 24:36Speaker 3: try hard and you're doing better at it.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Okay.
- 24:39Speaker 2: So when does the business really start to explode? When
- 24:44Speaker 2: VHS came out. Yes. Thank you, Jane Fonda.
- 24:49Speaker 3: You know, I was on TV on ESPN, my own
- 24:53Speaker 3: show every week. You know, morning you would watch me.
- 24:56Speaker 3: And then I got a chance to do a VHS.
- 24:59Speaker 3: And then that's a chance.
- 25:00Speaker 2: A workout tape.
- 25:01Speaker 3: A workout tape to see, you know, I would go
- 25:04Speaker 3: to Walmart on weekends to sign videos, VHSs, rock hard.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Abs, rock aerobics, all those different.
- 25:13Speaker 3: I sold over 25 million VHS and DVDs combined.
- 25:17Speaker 2: How many different videos were there?
- 25:20Speaker 3: Oh, I had over 300.
- 25:22Speaker 2: So you just kept coming up with a different thing. Oh, yes,
- 25:24Speaker 2: all the time.
- 25:26Speaker 3: From Pilates to yoga to stretching to hit the.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Spot, abs, arms, butt, thighs.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Of course.
- 25:35Speaker 2: And what are some of the great stories that I'm
- 25:38Speaker 2: sure that have happened to you where people come up
- 25:41Speaker 2: to you at an event or when you're just shopping
- 25:45Speaker 2: that really made you realize what I did was really
- 25:48Speaker 2: important in this life?
- 25:49Speaker 3: Yes.
- 25:50Speaker 2: It happens a lot.
- 25:51Speaker 3: But you know, when the kids were little, a lot
- 25:54Speaker 3: at the airport, or it would happen in the grocery store.
- 25:58Speaker 3: That's how my kids remember that their mom was somebody
- 26:02Speaker 3: or the first time because I've had women cry saying
- 26:06Speaker 3: you've changed my life. I finally lost the weight. I
- 26:09Speaker 3: don't have to take high blood pressure medicine anymore. Or
- 26:12Speaker 3: other women have come up to me and I finally
- 26:15Speaker 3: had the nerve to divorce my horrible husband. Everything was
- 26:22Speaker 3: always positive, which makes me feel so good inside. Anyone
- 26:28Speaker 3: who came up to.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Me, it was always positive.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Like, you started me on a fitness journey, and now
- 26:33Speaker 3: my kids do it.
- 26:36Speaker 2: So many stories. I've even been at a.
- 26:39Speaker 3: airline at the ticket counter and a lady fainted you
- 26:43Speaker 3: know the ticket counter lady fainted.
- 26:45Speaker 2: It was me you know I'm like oh get her
- 26:47Speaker 2: some orange juice oh.
- 26:48Speaker 3: My gosh you know I mean I've there and men
- 26:51Speaker 3: have come up to me and thanking me for their
- 26:53Speaker 3: wives bodies yeah or how good they feel they it's
- 26:57Speaker 3: always usually um thanks for a good attitude Cause you know, that's,
- 27:02Speaker 3: I would say, come on, you can do it.
- 27:04Speaker 2: You're worth it.
- 27:05Speaker 3: You deserve to feel your best. I, you know, for
- 27:09Speaker 3: 24 years I was on TV. So it was in
- 27:12Speaker 3: their homes, in their basements, in their, you know, their families.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I was on twice a day in the morning. So
- 27:18Speaker 2: would you do live events and stuff? No, I would
- 27:20Speaker 2: do personal appearances. Yeah.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Like a personal target or Walmart or Best Buy or back.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Okay. Blockbuster. Yeah. But, um, Live, no, my TV show
- 27:31Speaker 2: was a lot of work. And so you and your husband,
- 27:34Speaker 2: when did you eventually move back to California? Just when
- 27:38Speaker 2: our youngest daughter got into USC. Oh, you were on
- 27:41Speaker 2: the East Coast the whole time. Yes, so eight years
- 27:44Speaker 2: ago we moved back. Oh.
- 27:46Speaker 3: So we were East Coasters our entire married life so much.
- 27:49Speaker 3: I mean, for 30 years we lived back East.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Are you happy to be back in California?
- 27:53Speaker 3: Oh, yes, I love this weather.
- 27:54Speaker 2: But I miss my dearest friends. But they come visit.
- 27:57Speaker 2: They love it here.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Of course.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Good. And so with your daughters, what's the age difference
- 28:04Speaker 2: between the two?
- 28:05Speaker 3: Three years. So I have a 33-year-old Kelly Austin. Same
- 28:09Speaker 3: with my sons are three years apart.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Yes, it worked out great. But I didn't have kids
- 28:13Speaker 2: until seven years after we were married. How old were
- 28:16Speaker 2: you when you had your first?
- 28:16Speaker 3: 34.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Oh, okay. And did you have any trouble getting pregnant
- 28:21Speaker 2: or anything? Okay, good. And then you waited a couple
- 28:24Speaker 2: years and tried again? Yes.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Perfect.
- 28:25Speaker 2: And tried it again.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:28Speaker 2: And then that was enough for me, too. And you
- 28:30Speaker 2: knew that. I felt that. Yeah.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Because my husband was such a good dad. I mean,
- 28:35Speaker 3: I would travel to film my show and go for weeks.
- 28:38Speaker 3: He would come sometimes and bring the babies, or my
- 28:40Speaker 3: mom would meet us in the Caribbean or Hawaii to
- 28:44Speaker 3: take care of him while I was filming all day.
- 28:46Speaker 3: But I couldn't do that to him. He's a full-time lawyer,
- 28:49Speaker 3: full-time dad, you know.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:50Speaker 3: A lot on our plate.
- 28:52Speaker 2: And was there... What's your mom guilt moment? Was there
- 28:56Speaker 2: ever a mom guilt as a working mom? Because I
- 28:58Speaker 2: know I have mine and I've shared mine.
- 29:00Speaker 3: I would cry on those airplanes if they didn't land
- 29:03Speaker 3: on time that I missed their little lacrosse game or,
- 29:05Speaker 3: you know, one thing I really, when they were really
- 29:08Speaker 3: good in high school and, you know, knowing this is
- 29:12Speaker 3: where they want to be, you know, on a team.
- 29:15Speaker 2: A private team, a travel team.
- 29:18Speaker 3: I really worked my buns off so I didn't miss
- 29:21Speaker 3: any games in their high school years or college.
- 29:24Speaker 2: You mean you started to turn down stuff? Yes, always.
- 29:27Speaker 3: But when they were little, I would feel terrible if
- 29:29Speaker 3: my plane was delayed and I missed something.
- 29:32Speaker 2: You know, I feel that I would cry.
- 29:34Speaker 3: I sit there going, Oh no, I have a similar.
- 29:37Speaker 2: I feel like also I would cry a lot on
- 29:40Speaker 2: the planes too. Like coming back from, from like a
- 29:44Speaker 2: weekend of doing standup or whatever. Cause one, I think
- 29:47Speaker 2: someone told me you're more emotional in the air. There's
- 29:49Speaker 2: something like whatever oxygen. Well, I don't know. Depletion. Yeah.
- 29:55Speaker 2: And also I think that's why I cry a lot, like,
- 29:58Speaker 2: watching certain movies.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Or I think the movies are better on the plane.
- 30:02Speaker 2: And then I, like, watch them again later. I'm like,
- 30:04Speaker 2: why did I think that? Like, I'll be on a plane.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I'll be crying.
- 30:06Speaker 3: I'm like, why was this not Oscar-nominated?
- 30:09Speaker 2: And then someone said, no, it's, like, something. I don't know.
- 30:12Speaker 2: And then I'd really, like, be missing them and feeling guilty.
- 30:16Speaker 2: It was always the ride home.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Is that for me, too? Yeah. And getting to leave.
- 30:23Speaker 3: The couple days before I had to leave it. Get
- 30:26Speaker 3: a little melancholy.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Yes. I felt like, oh, do I really?
- 30:29Speaker 3: You know, I felt like it was a lot of sacrifice,
- 30:32Speaker 3: you know, being, trying to, you know, stay on top.
- 30:36Speaker 3: And at the same time, wanting to be there for
- 30:39Speaker 3: my girls. So I always chose the family over my job.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Yes, but I mean, I think I'm kind of asking
- 30:46Speaker 2: you because I do think it's something we don't talk
- 30:49Speaker 2: enough about. Right. Like, you know, and I think it's
- 30:52Speaker 2: helpful for people that are listening now to hear from
- 30:56Speaker 2: someone like you who did make the sacrifice. You did
- 30:59Speaker 2: miss mommy times that you'll never get back.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Yes. Not a lot.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Right, but I'm saying, but you still knew that. That
- 31:07Speaker 2: this is, like, this is an opportunity that it's now.
- 31:10Speaker 5: Yes.
- 31:10Speaker 2: It might not, if you put it to the side,
- 31:12Speaker 2: it might not be back in five years when your
- 31:14Speaker 2: kid is nine. Right. You know, so you're going to
- 31:16Speaker 2: have to miss this thing when the kid is four,
- 31:19Speaker 2: because this is when it is, and this is, you
- 31:21Speaker 2: know what I mean, the building, but it all works out.
- 31:24Speaker 2: I want people to know, like, it all works out.
- 31:26Speaker 2: It does. It all works out. You know, your girls
- 31:28Speaker 2: are good. Your marriage is good. And, but it's also
- 31:32Speaker 2: important that, you know, everyone, everybody deals with it differently.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:37Speaker 2: But I do feel like it'll never be the same
- 31:40Speaker 2: for men that travel and, and it's not, and it's
- 31:44Speaker 2: not an evaluation for him.
- 31:46Speaker 3: I always would have everything lined up before I left.
- 31:49Speaker 3: And you know, that's a lot of meal prep as
- 31:52Speaker 3: we call now. I don't know what it was called
- 31:54Speaker 3: back then, but just did it.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:56Speaker 3: But, um, you know, it was a lot on my
- 31:58Speaker 3: mind to be a mom still, you know, make sure
- 32:00Speaker 3: they sent, you know, like I was still the, you know, uh,
- 32:04Speaker 3: the mother helper at some of the schools I was
- 32:06Speaker 3: still you know rush home to do that and show
- 32:08Speaker 3: up and yeah I you know also I learned you
- 32:11Speaker 3: can't have it all all the time and you can
- 32:15Speaker 3: throughout your life and now looking back I'm 66 I
- 32:19Speaker 3: did have it all in different stages of my life
- 32:22Speaker 3: and I'm proud of that. And also I tell women,
- 32:27Speaker 3: when they're really little, it's okay that you're gone here
- 32:30Speaker 3: and there. That's what I say. When they're more like
- 32:34Speaker 3: getting teenager.
- 32:36Speaker 2: That's the most important. That's exactly what I said. Those
- 32:38Speaker 2: are the most important years, actually. And high schools, I
- 32:40Speaker 2: was there, boy. I have too.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Friday nights, if someone shows up, I was protecting, you know,
- 32:46Speaker 3: is anyone bringing beer down to my basement?
- 32:49Speaker 2: I just was, my husband and I were present. Yes.
- 32:52Speaker 3: And that was really important, especially in those ages, because
- 32:57Speaker 3: they could wave to different friends.
- 32:59Speaker 2: You just didn't know.
- 33:01Speaker 3: So when they were really little, I feel pretty good about,
- 33:05Speaker 3: you know, having the chance to do both in my
- 33:08Speaker 3: career and a mom.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Well, first of all, I love the expression, and a
- 33:14Speaker 2: friend of mine, a gay man friend of mine, Guy Branum,
- 33:18Speaker 2: We shared an office together at Chelsea lately. And he
- 33:20Speaker 2: was like, Heather, I think you should write a book
- 33:22Speaker 2: called Having It Most.
- 33:24Speaker 6: Oh, I like that.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Because you don't have it all.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:26Speaker 2: But no one can have it all all the time. No,
- 33:29Speaker 2: that's right. But you should strive to have it most.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Most time.
- 33:32Speaker 2: And most, yeah. I like that. And I like that too. Yeah,
- 33:35Speaker 2: you should do that.
- 33:36Speaker 4: I know.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Well, maybe I'll write another book, but this takes up
- 33:40Speaker 2: a lot of time. But what I was going to
- 33:42Speaker 2: say is I think oftentimes the routine for most women is,
- 33:47Speaker 2: I'm going to stay home when they're really little. And
- 33:49Speaker 2: then now that they can get themselves to and from
- 33:52Speaker 2: school or whatever, maybe that's when they really kind of
- 33:57Speaker 2: start doing their own thing and everything. And I'm not
- 33:59Speaker 2: criticizing anybody, but I felt like, oh my gosh, I'm
- 34:04Speaker 2: missing out on like the cute baby, you know, preschool
- 34:07Speaker 2: type of years. I missed stuff. But I felt like
- 34:11Speaker 2: by building my business then, I had the luxury of
- 34:16Speaker 2: when they were preteens and in high school to be
- 34:20Speaker 2: that much more present. And I kind of agree that,
- 34:23Speaker 2: for me at least, exactly what you're saying.
- 34:27Speaker 5: I agree.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Because they, at two or three or something, providing they
- 34:31Speaker 2: have good caregivers, they don't know. I had a lot
- 34:34Speaker 2: of family.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:35Speaker 2: They don't know that you missed the Christmas parade.
- 34:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:39Speaker 2: That I didn't miss. Or the Halloween one I didn't miss.
- 34:42Speaker 2: But I'm just saying, sometimes there's something that you might
- 34:44Speaker 2: have missed or not. But, yeah, you try to go
- 34:47Speaker 2: to the most things. But I remember there's just some
- 34:49Speaker 2: things you, you know, you have to miss. And, like,
- 34:53Speaker 2: so this past weekend, I was so excited. I got
- 34:59Speaker 2: to model with my son, Brandon. It was a mother-son
- 35:02Speaker 2: fashion show. You guys look gorgeous. And I.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Literally said to my husband, I go, someone could offer
- 35:09Speaker 2: me a hundred thousand dollars to do an appearance. If
- 35:13Speaker 2: it fell on this day, I would say no.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Like, cause I was like, there is only either because
- 35:19Speaker 2: I've missed other things and because there hasn't been that minute, like,
- 35:22Speaker 2: I'm like, I would not have missed that for the world.
- 35:24Speaker 2: And You know, my very good friend, Jill Zarin, she's
- 35:30Speaker 2: a former Real Housewives of New York, and she's got
- 35:32Speaker 2: amazing rugs, and she works with her daughter. And I
- 35:35Speaker 2: love her daughter, and I love her boyfriend. And it
- 35:37Speaker 2: was her 60th birthday in Boca Raton at her home.
- 35:41Speaker 2: And if I didn't have this, I would have gone there. Yes,
- 35:45Speaker 2: of course. But I was like, I immediately said to her,
- 35:48Speaker 2: I go, there's just no way.
- 35:49Speaker 3: When it comes to your kids.
- 35:50Speaker 2: There's just no way. But I saw the photos. And
- 35:55Speaker 2: but no FOMO. But I had no FOMO. I had
- 35:57Speaker 2: no FOMO because there was nothing I would have rather done. Now,
- 36:01Speaker 2: if I would have just said, oh, I don't want
- 36:03Speaker 2: to get on a plane and go to Florida and
- 36:05Speaker 2: then laid in my bed, go to bed at 530
- 36:07Speaker 2: with daylight saving time and then saw the photos, I'd
- 36:10Speaker 2: be like, you're an idiot, Heather. Right. But not when
- 36:13Speaker 2: you had something. Not when it's a family thing.
- 36:15Speaker 3: The same thing.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Yeah. The opportunity to walk with my daughter. Yeah. Sports
- 36:20Speaker 2: Illustrated swimsuit. Oh, wait, I have it.
- 36:22Speaker 5: Yes.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Oh, you do? There we are together. Yes.
- 36:25Speaker 3: Hand in hand.
- 36:26Speaker 2: It was so much fun. I would have never.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Given up that opportunity. I mean, she asked me and
- 36:32Speaker 3: then Sports Illustrated asked.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Because she models, too? She's a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model.
- 36:38Speaker 6: I love it.
- 36:39Speaker 2: But she's a fitness. She's following in my fitness footsteps.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Katie has her own app. She has her own merch
- 36:44Speaker 3: and stuff.
- 36:44Speaker 2: She's doing really great. And she's getting married in May.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Is this the older or the younger? She's the baby.
- 36:50Speaker 2: So she's getting married.
- 36:52Speaker 3: Yes.
- 36:52Speaker 2: And you like him. Oh, we love him.
- 36:54Speaker 3: Thank God.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 36:55Speaker 3: That's very important.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Right, yeah.
- 36:57Speaker 3: We don't like a few others of hers, so this
- 37:00Speaker 3: is a gem.
- 37:01Speaker 2: And when you don't like, what is your advice? Oh,
- 37:04Speaker 2: that was hard, you guys. To a mom that doesn't
- 37:06Speaker 2: like the girlfriend or the boyfriend of their child. You
- 37:09Speaker 2: have to be quiet. Let them realize it themselves. I...
- 37:13Speaker 2: I had to be quiet so much that it killed me.
- 37:16Speaker 2: And then would you, like, get in the bed and
- 37:17Speaker 2: shut the door and talk to your husband about it? Oh, yeah.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Jeff and I would, like, hit each other.
- 37:21Speaker 3: Don't, you know. He knows I'm so verbal that I'd say, like,
- 37:25Speaker 3: you're kidding. You're going to let him do that to
- 37:27Speaker 3: you or something?
- 37:27Speaker 2: You know, I would say something like that, like, not
- 37:30Speaker 2: pick you up. Are you kidding? You know, just little things.
- 37:33Speaker 2: So I always, my husband always would, you know, you
- 37:36Speaker 2: don't need to say it. You know, don't say it.
- 37:38Speaker 3: So I kept my mouth shut and she broke up
- 37:40Speaker 3: with him.
- 37:41Speaker 2: So that was good.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:42Speaker 2: She learned for herself. And then when she broke up
- 37:44Speaker 2: with him. Then everyone unloaded on her.
- 37:46Speaker 3: And then did she say, why didn't you tell me
- 37:48Speaker 3: or no? She said she kind of knew by little
- 37:51Speaker 3: things I would say.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Like it was.
- 37:54Speaker 3: Another guy, you know, she missed out a little of
- 37:58Speaker 3: college because she always was trying to, make sure she
- 38:01Speaker 3: made the other boyfriend happy, the one who went to
- 38:03Speaker 3: another school. And she missed out on a couple things.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard when you have a long-distance relationship in college,
- 38:09Speaker 2: I think. I do think you miss out.
- 38:11Speaker 3: You do. And I would say, oh, your sorority's doing
- 38:14Speaker 3: this with your fraternity.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Aren't you going?
- 38:17Speaker 3: And she'd look at me like, No, I'm not.
- 38:20Speaker 2: It's a date, you know. And my boyfriend wouldn't like it.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Yeah, she goes, I knew you, when you would ask
- 38:26Speaker 3: those questions, what you were driving at.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. And she knew it. So, I mean, you know.
- 38:32Speaker 2: It happened naturally, but you do have to zip it.
- 38:35Speaker 2: You have to zip it, and I think because you
- 38:38Speaker 2: don't want to.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Unless they're in danger.
- 38:39Speaker 2: Right, of course. Unless they're in danger and it's domestic violence. No,
- 38:42Speaker 2: that was never the case. But if it was just,
- 38:43Speaker 2: you know, you got your favorite or whatever, I think
- 38:46Speaker 2: it is good to take that advice because... When they
- 38:49Speaker 2: are not happy with him, they want to be able
- 38:52Speaker 2: to come to you. And if they know the whole
- 38:55Speaker 2: time you've been bitching and saying he's a loser, they
- 38:58Speaker 2: might be like, well, I don't want to go to
- 39:00Speaker 2: my mom and have her say I told you so.
- 39:02Speaker 2: So that is one of the reasons to keep your
- 39:04Speaker 2: mouth shut. I love that my girls tell me everything.
- 39:06Speaker 2: I love that. And I think that.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Is really important.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Are the girls really close to each other? Oh, yeah.
- 39:12Speaker 2: The sisters. They live a mile away from each other.
- 39:15Speaker 2: I love that. I'm really close to my sister, too.
- 39:17Speaker 2: And you're close to your sister, obviously.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Oh, yes.
- 39:20Speaker 2: I'm close to all of them. Yeah, I love it.
- 39:22Speaker 2: It's awesome. We talk every day. So where can you
- 39:26Speaker 2: tell us when the wedding is? Do we know? Oh,
- 39:28Speaker 2: it's May 4th.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Yes. Okay.
- 39:30Speaker 3: California.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Oh. And are you a big part of the planning? Oh, yes.
- 39:34Speaker 3: They want me involved in everything, which is so fun.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Okay. And then the... Older sister, is she? The maid
- 39:41Speaker 2: of honor. She's not married yet. Okay, so she's the
- 39:42Speaker 2: maid of honor.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Okay, I love it.
- 39:45Speaker 3: She is a spiritual type healer. She does sound bath,
- 39:49Speaker 3: Kelly Austin. Oh, okay.
- 39:52Speaker 2: She does astrology. She's very smart. But I just saw
- 39:55Speaker 2: a thing on TikTok, and it's a sound bath that
- 39:59Speaker 2: they put you on a floaty in the pool.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Oh, yes, yes.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Does your daughter do that? She does that. She does. Okay.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Cause everyone was like, Oh my God. And they like,
- 40:07Speaker 2: they show them putting the person on a big float
- 40:09Speaker 2: by themselves. Relax your neck. Yes. And they like put
- 40:12Speaker 2: a blankie on you.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Yeah. And then she does sound bad.
- 40:16Speaker 2: It's beautiful. Oh, that's so cool.
- 40:18Speaker 3: So we are going to start to do like wellness
- 40:21Speaker 3: things together.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Oh, I love it. Yeah. Like Jill and Allie. Jill's
- 40:27Speaker 2: there and her daughter Allie. I love when people get
- 40:30Speaker 2: their business. It's really fun. And I think it so complements,
- 40:33Speaker 2: especially with the two generations, you know, like because they're
- 40:36Speaker 2: bringing something obviously to it and then so are you.
- 40:40Speaker 2: And it's a really smart thing if you can work together.
- 40:42Speaker 3: And Katie and I did a mother-daughter workout tour together.
- 40:44Speaker 3: And all these mother-daughters, it sold out in two hours. Wow. Oh, wow.
- 40:49Speaker 3: It was right before the pandemic. And it was the
- 40:52Speaker 3: most endearing thing. They drove for so long to get
- 40:55Speaker 3: to us. It was so much fun because they told
- 40:59Speaker 3: stories like I used to be, you know, teaching. I mean,
- 41:02Speaker 3: sitting and doing your workouts when the baby was, you know, crawling.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Here she is following your daughter. And it goes all, you.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Know, both generations.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Well, let's, okay, let's talk a little bit about fitness.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Here's your cute family. Yes. Wait, so which one is
- 41:19Speaker 2: getting married? The one in the black dress?
- 41:20Speaker 3: The one on the left.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Oh, the jeans.
- 41:21Speaker 3: Yes.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, such a cute family. She's so cute.
- 41:24Speaker 2: And so let's talk a little bit, like how, what
- 41:27Speaker 2: are your thoughts about the Ozempic semi-glutide phase and fat and,
- 41:35Speaker 2: and everything with that. What is your opinion on it?
- 41:37Speaker 3: I am not a medical doctor, and I'm always promoting
- 41:40Speaker 3: health and fitness, like, you know, take care of your body,
- 41:44Speaker 3: because you still have to get your muscles in shape,
- 41:47Speaker 3: no matter what you're doing. Muscles work miracles on your metabolism.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Muscles are what's going to keep you young, staying, nothing
- 41:54Speaker 3: droops or sags when you have muscle tone, and muscles
- 41:58Speaker 3: really help with so much. You know, we have 640
- 42:01Speaker 3: muscles head to toe. You still need No matter what
- 42:04Speaker 3: drug you're on, no matter, I mean, I don't take anything,
- 42:08Speaker 3: but the key is muscles still have the structure to
- 42:12Speaker 3: take good care of your body for a long time.
- 42:14Speaker 3: So I've talked to many doctors about it. I've been
- 42:19Speaker 3: on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports back
- 42:21Speaker 3: in the day, and I still have a lot of
- 42:24Speaker 3: doctors I always call about different things. What do you
- 42:26Speaker 3: think about this? What do you think about that? And
- 42:29Speaker 3: They are very worried of what they're going to be
- 42:32Speaker 3: like when they take themselves off of it. And that
- 42:35Speaker 3: is still yet to, the research isn't there. So there is,
- 42:39Speaker 3: you know, I'm into the research of it and I don't,
- 42:43Speaker 3: we really don't know everything about it.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Right. So that's all.
- 42:46Speaker 3: But I do think at one point a lot of
- 42:49Speaker 3: people need to lose some weight. So if it's a
- 42:52Speaker 3: good way to jumpstart it.
- 42:53Speaker 2: I think that's what it is. I just think it's
- 42:55Speaker 2: one of those things.
- 42:56Speaker 3: And if you're under a doctor's care who really understands it.
- 42:59Speaker 2: And you have a goal for yourself to say, my
- 43:03Speaker 2: goal is to only be on this three months. Yes.
- 43:06Speaker 2: And see if I can. you know, change my habits
- 43:09Speaker 2: and keep that 15 pounds off. And then when there's
- 43:11Speaker 2: somebody that has to lose a lot more, like 100, then,
- 43:15Speaker 2: you know, then they have a different plan. Because everyone's different. Yeah.
- 43:18Speaker 3: If you need a jump start, talk to your doctor.
- 43:21Speaker 3: But still think about it as a lifestyle.
- 43:23Speaker 2: What are you eating? How are you moving?
- 43:26Speaker 3: Think about your lifestyle. That's what I'm here for. I
- 43:31Speaker 3: want people to realize it doesn't take that much. I
- 43:34Speaker 3: only work out 30 minutes most days of the week.
- 43:36Speaker 3: So that's not a lot when you're awake, 16 hours usually.
- 43:40Speaker 3: What's 30 minutes to take care of your health? This
- 43:43Speaker 3: is what's in your lungs, your heart. That is a
- 43:45Speaker 3: good way to put it. Like you have 30 minutes.
- 43:48Speaker 3: You have 30 minutes. You could go for a walk.
- 43:51Speaker 3: You could do, you know, get down on the ground,
- 43:53Speaker 3: do some stretching and some toning, calisthenic-type moves. You could do,
- 43:57Speaker 3: you know, light weights for your arms and your chest
- 43:59Speaker 3: and your shoulders and just normal exercises that really work.
- 44:04Speaker 3: I mean, they're tried and true. There's only so many ways.
- 44:07Speaker 2: You can move your body. So I do believe in
- 44:11Speaker 2: just moving.
- 44:11Speaker 3: 30 minutes a day makes a world of difference for
- 44:15Speaker 3: your attitude, for your mental health, for your body. There's
- 44:19Speaker 3: so much research that if you just do 30 minutes,
- 44:22Speaker 3: then you are taking good care of your health.
- 44:24Speaker 2: How do you feel about pickleball, Chris? I love it.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Are you kidding? Good. Pickleball shoe. The Denise Austin pickleball shoe. Wait.
- 44:32Speaker 2: You have a pickleball shoe? Yes, I have a pickleball shoe. Oh,
- 44:34Speaker 2: my gosh. This is your magazine, which is so amazing.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Fit over 50.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Fit over 50.
- 44:38Speaker 2: This is your own magazine. Yes, it is. How often
- 44:40Speaker 2: does it come out? Four times a year. That's my call. Oh,
- 44:43Speaker 2: my gosh. I love it. It's all me. I work
- 44:47Speaker 2: very hard on this. Oh, my gosh. It's doing really well.
- 44:49Speaker 2: It's in all the grocery stores.
- 44:52Speaker 3: And you have different exercises, different recipes.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Yes, a lot of great recipes. Different little things.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Ways to kind of look cute when you're 50 and over.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Cute outfits.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Ways to feel better about yourself and kind of little attitude.
- 45:08Speaker 2: I call them denisiologies that I kind of. Do you
- 45:11Speaker 2: have any sleeping tips? Oh, yes. A lot of sleeping tips. Tell.
- 45:16Speaker 3: First of all, you know, cut coffee off. I love
- 45:19Speaker 3: my coffee, but I only have it in the morning.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Me too.
- 45:22Speaker 3: So cut it off by 12 noon.
- 45:24Speaker 2: There's a lot of research. If you go past 12,
- 45:27Speaker 2: it changes it. the rhythm of your body.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Try to go to eat three hours before you go
- 45:33Speaker 3: to bed.
- 45:33Speaker 2: So I eat early.
- 45:35Speaker 3: My husband and I, unless we're going out to dinner
- 45:37Speaker 3: with friends, but we try to eat around 6 p.m.
- 45:41Speaker 3: if we can. And the earlier you do the dinner,
- 45:44Speaker 3: the more time your food has to metabolize, which helps
- 45:47Speaker 3: your sleep, but also helps your weight. So the sooner,
- 45:50Speaker 3: the better you get in your dinner.
- 45:52Speaker 2: And then, and if you're like me I.
- 45:55Speaker 3: Get up to pee a lot during the night yeah
- 45:57Speaker 3: so I started to realize don't drink a lot of
- 46:00Speaker 3: water after 8 p.m because I drink water throughout the
- 46:03Speaker 3: day which I love you know of course we all
- 46:05Speaker 3: stop after your skin yeah stop now after eight so
- 46:08Speaker 3: I don't wake up at midnight to pee yeah um
- 46:10Speaker 3: I only do one glass of wine when I go
- 46:12Speaker 3: to it does disrupt my sleep a bit and um
- 46:16Speaker 3: So that's hard when you're out with girlfriends, of course.
- 46:20Speaker 3: I just have to say goodbye to the sleep that night.
- 46:23Speaker 3: You know, it goes in waves. And I use, honestly,
- 46:28Speaker 3: a very dark room. I make all of our places,
- 46:31Speaker 3: you know, I have a house in the desert, too.
- 46:34Speaker 2: With dark out windows. You have a house in the desert, too?
- 46:36Speaker 3: So do I. Yes, in La Quinta.
- 46:38Speaker 2: So do I. Oh, of course. We have everything in government.
- 46:40Speaker 5: Oh, my God.
- 46:41Speaker 2: You have to come by.
- 46:42Speaker 3: I have a new retreat area that is just open
- 46:45Speaker 3: where my- Are you going to go this weekend? No,
- 46:48Speaker 3: we're going to Savannah for a wedding.
- 46:49Speaker 2: And then, are you going to be there- I'll be there.
- 46:54Speaker 2: For Christmas?
- 46:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:54Speaker 4: Okay, call me.
- 46:55Speaker 2: I don't know about Christmas. We'll get each other's number.
- 46:56Speaker 5: Okay.
- 46:57Speaker 2: We don't want everyone coming over. You have to see
- 46:59Speaker 2: our place. Yeah, that would be fun. Okay, yeah.
- 47:01Speaker 3: And so, we're going to have- Wellness events there.
- 47:05Speaker 2: It's six acres across the street from the resort. Love it.
- 47:08Speaker 3: Yes. And we're going to call it the Austin Estate.
- 47:10Speaker 2: It just got finished two weeks ago. Oh, my God.
- 47:12Speaker 2: That's amazing. I know. Three and a half years in
- 47:15Speaker 2: the making. So, very dark room. Me, too.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Yes.
- 47:17Speaker 2: I'm all about, like, the blackout blinds. And a little colder. Yes. Me, too.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Because it's very important for your temperature to be a
- 47:22Speaker 3: little colder and then snuggle up in the bed.
- 47:25Speaker 2: What's your temperature that you like?
- 47:26Speaker 3: 68.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Me, too.
- 47:28Speaker 3: Stop it.
- 47:30Speaker 2: You need to be my sister.
- 47:32Speaker 3: Yeah. And.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Those are just the best tips. I could just sleep
- 47:35Speaker 2: over in the bed with you.
- 47:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Those are just my easiest tips. Yeah. And exercise is important.
- 47:42Speaker 3: I can tell days I don't exercise, like I'm running around,
- 47:45Speaker 3: that I didn't get a good night's sleep because I
- 47:47Speaker 3: didn't get in my cardio. I didn't get in some,
- 47:50Speaker 3: you know, feeling like I gave it my all in exercise.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Are there any, like, vitamins or something that you think?
- 47:57Speaker 3: Vitamin D for all of us women. We all need
- 48:01Speaker 3: vitamin D for sure.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Real vitamin D or just a vitamin D pill or both? Both. Oh, both, both, both.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Being the sun. A little bit of time. A little bit,
- 48:09Speaker 2: like 30 minutes in morning sun is the best. Okay.
- 48:12Speaker 3: And I truly, when I wake up, I do drink
- 48:15Speaker 3: some water with squeezes, two squeezes.
- 48:17Speaker 2: Of a lemon.
- 48:18Speaker 3: And you could get out there and look into the lemons.
- 48:21Speaker 2: Yeah. And I really believe in that.
- 48:23Speaker 3: My grandma used to do it. And I also eat
- 48:26Speaker 3: a little bit of parsley in the mornings.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Just a leaf.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Did you know in just one little leaf is as
- 48:32Speaker 3: much vitamin C as an orange?
- 48:34Speaker 2: No. Yes, so you need your parsley.
- 48:36Speaker 3: My grandma was from Croatia, so she always would talk
- 48:39Speaker 3: about parsley and lemon.
- 48:41Speaker 2: Oh, interesting. What are some other secret foods that have more?
- 48:46Speaker 3: Flax seeds, chia seeds, and hemp seeds I put over
- 48:51Speaker 3: cottage cheese.
- 48:53Speaker 2: I like that in the morning. I feel like cottage
- 48:55Speaker 2: cheese is making a comeback. Definitely.
- 48:57Speaker 3: Can you believe that?
- 48:58Speaker 2: I feel like it was out of style. It was
- 48:59Speaker 2: my mom's diet food.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Cottage cheese, grapefruit, hard-boiled eggs. Because cheese is great for
- 49:06Speaker 3: us women because it has the calcium, it has protein.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Us women need more protein than you think.
- 49:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 49:11Speaker 2: So we need to wake up and have protein. So
- 49:14Speaker 2: what are some other good sources of protein that are
- 49:17Speaker 2: easy to put in your diet? Yogurt is really great. Yeah.
- 49:21Speaker 3: Almonds are great. Walnuts are great. And they have good
- 49:24Speaker 3: fat in them too. So olive oil. Healthy fats are
- 49:28Speaker 3: really important for our skin.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Avocado.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Oh, gosh.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Is there too much avocado where it can be fattening
- 49:35Speaker 2: or not? Oh, yes. It's still calories. Oh, so how
- 49:39Speaker 2: much avocado should I have? I have like a half
- 49:41Speaker 2: a day. Okay, half a day, but maybe not more
- 49:43Speaker 2: than that. So I'll put a little in my toast
- 49:45Speaker 2: or next to my eggs.
- 49:47Speaker 3: And then maybe I'll have a little, you know, over
- 49:49Speaker 3: a sandwich too.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Yeah. Or put it in a salad at night. Is
- 49:52Speaker 2: there something that people for a long time thought was
- 49:55Speaker 2: a good thing to eat that actually now we're realizing
- 49:59Speaker 2: it's not good?
- 50:00Speaker 4: No.
- 50:01Speaker 3: I read somewhere that like fruit. I think a little
- 50:03Speaker 3: of everything is fine. I felt like, I think like
- 50:06Speaker 3: sweet juice.
- 50:07Speaker 2: Juices aren't as healthy as you might think. I remember
- 50:10Speaker 2: when I was writing White Chicks, you mentioned that you know. Yes,
- 50:13Speaker 2: I love White Chicks. Oh, by the way.
- 50:14Speaker 4: My daughters.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Oh, my God. This was the best movie they loved. Well,
- 50:18Speaker 2: I want to. So proud of you. I want to
- 50:20Speaker 2: give a little shout out about White Chicks because I'm
- 50:23Speaker 2: so excited. My friend, who lives in La Quinta, too,
- 50:27Speaker 2: sent an email and said, they're doing this thing. It's
- 50:31Speaker 2: called Fork and Film. And they take classic movies. And
- 50:36Speaker 2: for like a month, they have like a pop-up and you, they,
- 50:39Speaker 2: what they're eating on the screen, they serve you.
- 50:42Speaker 3: Oh.
- 50:43Speaker 2: And they're doing white chicks in LA in January. And
- 50:47Speaker 2: so I'm going, what are you going to eat there?
- 50:49Speaker 2: I mean, I'm trying to remember from the movie. I
- 50:51Speaker 2: know that there's a, there's an eating scene where Marlon
- 50:53Speaker 2: goes on a date as a woman with Terry Crews.
- 50:57Speaker 2: And I can't remember what he had there. There's, An
- 50:59Speaker 2: appetizer scene. I love this. So I'm thinking there's probably, like,
- 51:01Speaker 2: an app thing where, like, then Marlon is lactose intolerant.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Because I'm remembering all the scenes that I was writing
- 51:09Speaker 2: and went through with it. I have to re-see it.
- 51:11Speaker 2: And so anyway, we're going on January 21st. Oh, wonderful.
- 51:15Speaker 2: And my son, it's his 18th birthday. Oh, stop it.
- 51:18Speaker 2: And he has never really seen the movie all the
- 51:20Speaker 2: way through. Oh. And my niece is going in and
- 51:22Speaker 2: we're like so excited. That's so cool. Yeah, it'll be
- 51:26Speaker 2: so fun. And I'm like, I can't believe I only really...
- 51:28Speaker 2: I was in one other movie they did called Dance Flick,
- 51:31Speaker 2: but it wasn't as popular. And I'm like, I can't
- 51:33Speaker 2: believe the one movie... You made a cameo in that movie.
- 51:35Speaker 2: I had a small part that I... Well, I helped
- 51:37Speaker 2: write the movie, but one of the scenes I wrote
- 51:39Speaker 2: was this annoying sales girl based on someone... That I
- 51:43Speaker 2: knew in L.A. And and then I didn't think they
- 51:48Speaker 2: were going to be able to put me in it
- 51:50Speaker 2: because they were filming in Canada. And there was like
- 51:53Speaker 2: rules about using so many Canadian actors. Oh, so they
- 51:56Speaker 2: were like, we really want to find a part for you, Heather.
- 51:59Speaker 2: We but like we might have to give this to
- 52:01Speaker 2: a Canadian actor. I'm like, OK, whatever. I knew I
- 52:03Speaker 2: was going to able to go. I was going to
- 52:05Speaker 2: be able to go one time just to help with
- 52:07Speaker 2: like the table read. So I came back from the
- 52:10Speaker 2: table read and then they said, okay, we got, you're able,
- 52:13Speaker 2: can you get on the plane tonight? And my son
- 52:16Speaker 2: was only like, no, two months old or maybe he
- 52:21Speaker 2: was about four months old. Cause there's a photo of
- 52:23Speaker 2: me going to the white chicks premiere and my son's
- 52:25Speaker 2: on my hip and a diaper and he's now 21.
- 52:29Speaker 2: So I'm like, I can't believe that this movie has
- 52:32Speaker 2: remained such like a, A classic. Yes, it really has.
- 52:36Speaker 2: And like so good with, you know, and so I'm
- 52:38Speaker 2: so excited. So I'm like. That's so cool. So I'm like,
- 52:41Speaker 2: I think I'm going to try to wear a similar
- 52:43Speaker 2: outfit that I wore in the movie and a similar
- 52:46Speaker 2: hair just because.
- 52:46Speaker 3: God forbid I get recognized.
- 52:48Speaker 2: I hope you saved a lot.
- 52:50Speaker 3: I saved all my old leotards.
- 52:52Speaker 2: And that's why I do these.
- 52:53Speaker 3: Then and now.
- 52:54Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I saved them. They still fit. And
- 52:57Speaker 2: my daughter wears them because she loves the vintage look,
- 53:00Speaker 2: you know. A high cut now. Yes. Up and in.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 53:04Speaker 2: It's all in. Did your girls steal your clothes growing up?
- 53:07Speaker 2: Would they go in your closet and take stuff without asking?
- 53:09Speaker 2: Now I take their clothes. Are you kidding? They have
- 53:11Speaker 2: the cutest clothes. I borrow theirs all the time. Oh,
- 53:14Speaker 2: my gosh. I love it. Because you probably always wear
- 53:16Speaker 2: the same size. Yeah. We all wear the same size together.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Was there ever a time where having a mom be
- 53:24Speaker 2: a fitness guru, icon, was it ever... annoying to your
- 53:29Speaker 2: daughters or not great.
- 53:31Speaker 3: But I didn't act like I was anyone, to be
- 53:35Speaker 3: honest with you. So when, no, all the teams loved
- 53:39Speaker 3: me because they would say.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Oh, Mrs. Austin, could you stretch us out? Could you
- 53:43Speaker 2: do a warm-up for us? You know, right before the
- 53:45Speaker 2: lacrosse game or something. And so I'd say, okay, girls,
- 53:48Speaker 2: come on.
- 53:49Speaker 3: And no, everyone would laugh and it'd be fun.
- 53:51Speaker 2: And was there ever a time where being a famous
- 53:55Speaker 2: person was hard in getting along with the moms at
- 54:00Speaker 2: schools and stuff.
- 54:01Speaker 3: No, never.
- 54:02Speaker 5: Good.
- 54:02Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 54:03Speaker 3: I never had any issues.
- 54:05Speaker 4: Good.
- 54:05Speaker 2: But I didn't.
- 54:06Speaker 3: We were in a town, Alexander, Virginia, that there weren't anyone. Yeah,
- 54:11Speaker 3: we were just all normal.
- 54:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 54:13Speaker 3: Honestly, we're all equal. No one thought anything of, you know,
- 54:17Speaker 3: I mean, there were Supreme Court justice family.
- 54:20Speaker 2: There were, you know, this was major, you know. No
- 54:23Speaker 2: one cared about the fitness girl.
- 54:24Speaker 3: No one cared about the aerobic girl coming around.
- 54:29Speaker 2: I love that. That's good. And I didn't make a
- 54:31Speaker 2: big deal of it. Right.
- 54:33Speaker 3: I was just a normal mom, to be honest with you.
- 54:35Speaker 2: I'm just kind of thinking that's sort of interesting because
- 54:38Speaker 2: when you grow up in L.A. and when you're in L.A.
- 54:41Speaker 2: and the surrounding areas, there is.
- 54:46Speaker 2: Is there's always famous people. Yes. And I wonder if it...
- 54:49Speaker 2: I actually think it is a bigger deal here than
- 54:53Speaker 2: if there was just one famous person in a town
- 54:56Speaker 2: and they just accepted we have the fitness person or
- 54:58Speaker 2: we have the former NFL player. Right. I think it's
- 55:01Speaker 2: because we're so weird and self-conscious of it in L.A.,
- 55:06Speaker 2: whether it's... You're right. Yeah. Like, oh, this person, you know,
- 55:10Speaker 2: is recognizable or... They're not recognizable, but that's the director
- 55:15Speaker 2: of the blah, blah, blah. Yeah, so that's kind of funny.
- 55:20Speaker 3: In D.C., Washington, it was more the political people that
- 55:24Speaker 3: were important.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Well, I absolutely loved getting to know you. Oh, me too.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Tell everybody where they can follow you and your daughters
- 55:34Speaker 2: and what you have going on and all that.
- 55:36Speaker 3: Well, if you want to follow me on Instagram or Facebook,
- 55:39Speaker 3: I'm at Denise Austin. And then I have A website
- 55:42Speaker 3: that I have all of my old TV shows. So
- 55:45Speaker 3: if any of you remember me on the beach doing exercises,
- 55:48Speaker 3: I digitized them all. And they're all on my website,
- 55:52Speaker 3: over 300 of them. And then I do all new workouts,
- 55:55Speaker 3: of course, because they want to see me now. Yeah.
- 55:58Speaker 3: And see what a 66-year-old can do, which is, you know,
- 56:01Speaker 3: most everything still. Thank God that's important. I'm 100% natural
- 56:06Speaker 3: so far. And what else?
- 56:09Speaker 2: So you don't do any Botox, nothing?
- 56:11Speaker 3: No, but I need it.
- 56:12Speaker 2: My girl said I need it before the wedding. Your
- 56:15Speaker 2: daughter did? Mom, start now so you can see if
- 56:18Speaker 2: you like it.
- 56:19Speaker 3: I think you look amazing, but have you not for
- 56:22Speaker 3: any particular reason? No, just I don't know who to
- 56:26Speaker 3: go to.
- 56:27Speaker 2: There's nothing, the reasons for it. Okay.
- 56:31Speaker 3: Not at all.
- 56:32Speaker 2: I just haven't done it yet. Well, you look great,
- 56:34Speaker 2: but you do think you might get some?
- 56:36Speaker 3: I might. I might. I don't know.
- 56:37Speaker 2: May I suggest Dr. Kasabian at LiftMD? Okay. He does mine. Okay.
- 56:42Speaker 2: And he does very natural, like he goes with what
- 56:45Speaker 2: you want because I'm like, I got to be able
- 56:47Speaker 2: to move. I got to be able to have a glass,
- 56:49Speaker 2: you know, and all that. So he's great. But no,
- 56:53Speaker 2: I think, sure, I would maybe, if I were you,
- 56:56Speaker 2: the wedding's when? March?
- 56:58Speaker 5: May.
- 56:58Speaker 3: May.
- 56:58Speaker 2: May. I would maybe try to go now just to
- 57:01Speaker 2: see if you like it. And if you don't, it'll
- 57:03Speaker 2: be gone by then.
- 57:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Yes. So that's why. But I mean, you don't need it.
- 57:08Speaker 2: You have beautiful skin and, you know, everything.
- 57:12Speaker 3: I honestly think that you've got to feel the best
- 57:15Speaker 3: you can.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:16Speaker 3: So maybe I should do a little something because I
- 57:18Speaker 3: do look a little, you.
- 57:19Speaker 2: Know, got that fur, whatever. Well, I mean, it is
- 57:23Speaker 2: a great. It is a great thing that's come around
- 57:25Speaker 2: in the last 20 years. First, I've got to try
- 57:26Speaker 2: some facials. I haven't even done that. You haven't even
- 57:28Speaker 2: done a facial? Well, I've had a few in my life, but,
- 57:31Speaker 2: you know, when I go to spas, but I don't
- 57:34Speaker 2: do it on a regular basis. And there's so many
- 57:36Speaker 2: things there, too. Yes, that's what I might first start with.
- 57:40Speaker 3: And what else? I'm just excited because I have new
- 57:43Speaker 3: Denise Awesome walking shoes.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Okay. And a treadmill, walking treadmill. And they can get
- 57:48Speaker 2: that all on your website? Website, yeah. Okay. That's it.
- 57:50Speaker 2: And then.
- 57:52Speaker 3: If you have kids that, you know, young girls that
- 57:54Speaker 3: want to follow Katie Austin, she has HIIT workouts, a little,
- 57:57Speaker 3: you know, more challenging than what I do.
- 57:59Speaker 5: Good.
- 58:00Speaker 3: And Katie, Kelly, if you want, like, sound bath and
- 58:05Speaker 3: really relaxation things.
- 58:05Speaker 2: So Katie Austin, Kelly Austin. Yeah, yeah. Look them up.
- 58:08Speaker 2: Follow them, too.
- 58:10Speaker 3: And Katie made the Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover for the calendar.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Wait, this is your daughter? That's Katie Austin. Yes.
- 58:17Speaker 5: Yes.
- 58:18Speaker 3: I know. And she was on because she was an athlete.
- 58:22Speaker 2: You know, she played lacrosse. Oh, my God. She's gorgeous.
- 58:26Speaker 2: And that's all the girls in the magazine. Oh, my gosh. Gorgeous. Oh,
- 58:30Speaker 2: thank you, honey. I had to bring you this.
- 58:32Speaker 3: This is from my first leotard workout in 1980s.
- 58:39Speaker 2: Look at that.
- 58:39Speaker 3: That might be fun for you. How do you feel
- 58:41Speaker 3: about fake asses?
- 58:43Speaker 2: I just don't get it.
- 58:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:46Speaker 2: I don't want to sit there.
- 58:47Speaker 3: And feel like something's weird there.
- 58:50Speaker 2: But I don't know. I don't know what a fake
- 58:52Speaker 2: house feels like.
- 58:53Speaker 3: I like a shapely butt, but you can build your
- 58:56Speaker 3: butt by certain exercises.
- 58:58Speaker 2: What's the best butt lifting, butt building?
- 59:01Speaker 5: Squats.
- 59:01Speaker 2: Just an old-fashioned squat. And here's another thing. Squeeze your buttocks.
- 59:05Speaker 2: Tighten up your tushy for five seconds. I'm doing that
- 59:07Speaker 2: right now. If you don't squeeze it, no one else will.
- 59:12Speaker 3: And you can really do that with different muscles or
- 59:14Speaker 3: isometric exercise. For your abs, pull your tummy up and in.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Tighten up your abs for five seconds.
- 59:20Speaker 3: And that's equal to a sit-up because you're contracting your
- 59:23Speaker 3: ab muscles.
- 59:24Speaker 2: Also, do it in traffic, LA traffic. Anytime, anywhere. These
- 59:28Speaker 2: are little exercises. Just keep moving. You know, standing burns
- 59:32Speaker 2: more calories than sitting.
- 59:33Speaker 3: True. So at any time throughout the day.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Well, I love that there's all the standing desks and
- 59:36Speaker 2: that kind of thing. Because it really can force you to.
- 59:39Speaker 2: Keep you moving. Yeah. Vehicles to get you going. That's
- 59:42Speaker 2: what I love.
- 59:43Speaker 3: Anything.
- 59:44Speaker 2: I do, while I blow dry my hair, I do squats.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Great for your butt. Oh, wow.
- 59:48Speaker 1: Yes.
- 59:49Speaker 2: Look great from behind. Yeah.
- 59:52Speaker 5: Okay.
- 59:52Speaker 2: Well, take it to the, take the, take the girl,
- 59:54Speaker 2: take her to the girl who's been married for how
- 59:56Speaker 2: many years?
- 59:56Speaker 3: Oh.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Oh, my God. This is the firmest tummy I've ever felt.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: This is the firmest tummy I've ever felt. I love it.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: I've had a lot of famous people fill my tummy, Heather,
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: through my years, but I don't ask too many men anymore.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Good for you. That's why you stayed married. Yeah. Good
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Catholic girl. Thank you so much, Denise.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: Love you.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: Oh, Heather, you're adorable. Too fun. Love it. Keep fit, everybody.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: Bye.
- 1:00:25Speaker 6: They think you're done for the day, but they don't
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: know about the drawer. The drawer. Just the one square
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: before bed. Or two, you know.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Nobody's watching.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: You deserve a treat.
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: With eight flavours to choose from, you can choose the
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: flavour you favour with Cadbury Dairy Milk.
