- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the pre Thanksgiving edition of Fair Territory.
- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Ken Rosenthal here with my friend Alana Rizzo. We
- 0:08Speaker 1: are getting ready for the holiday. Of course, we hope
- 0:10Speaker 1: everyone is well during their travels, their preparations, and we
- 0:14Speaker 1: have still a baseball off season that is in Alana.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I would call it the formative stage.
- 0:20Speaker 2: How's that it is? Ken, good to be with you.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Is always happy Thanksgiving everybody. I would say, Ken Rosenthal,
- 0:26Speaker 2: that our sport is incomplete. It seems like all thirty
- 0:30Speaker 2: teams still have a lot of holes to fill.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Absolutely, Alana. And we've seen a number of moves so far,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and frankly, each of these trades that we've seen have
- 0:40Speaker 1: only led to more questions, even going back to Grayson
- 0:43Speaker 1: Rodriguez for Turner Taylor Ward and then the Sunny Gray
- 0:47Speaker 1: trade yesterday, and then of course we can talk as
- 0:50Speaker 1: well about the Brandon Neimo from Marcus Simeon trade. When
- 0:53Speaker 1: you look at the Gray acquisition by the Red Sox,
- 0:55Speaker 1: you wonder, okay, is he the number two starter that
- 0:58Speaker 1: they were talking about or are they going to do
- 1:00Speaker 1: something else. They have a lot of possibilities for that
- 1:04Speaker 1: rotation and looks pretty good Frankly Crochet, Gray, Bayo, Cutter,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Crawford coming back, Connor Lee Early, Peyton Totley, all of
- 1:12Speaker 1: these guys. Patrick Sandoval perhaps, but it just seems to
- 1:16Speaker 1: me that Sonny Gray is not a number two. I
- 1:19Speaker 1: know they love his strikeouts, I know they love the
- 1:21Speaker 1: strikeout to walk all that. It's all good, but is
- 1:24Speaker 1: he that guy at thirty six? Well, I'm not sure,
- 1:27Speaker 1: but I'm sure the Red Sox are thinking about many
- 1:31Speaker 1: other things as well, upgrading their offense being one of them.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And then the Mets the Brandon Nemo trade. Now, this
- 1:37Speaker 1: was a very interesting trade in so many ways, Brandon
- 1:40Speaker 1: Nimo from Marcus Simeon, and I get what the Mets
- 1:44Speaker 1: are doing in terms of trying to shake it up,
- 1:47Speaker 1: but I question whether brandon Nimo was the right guy
- 1:50Speaker 1: to shake it up with. I don't see him as
- 1:53Speaker 1: the problem. He's three years younger than Simeon, and while
- 1:56Speaker 1: Simeon will upgrade them defensively, they're getting him for his
- 1:59Speaker 1: ages thirty, thirty six and thirty seven season at a
- 2:02Speaker 1: time when he is in offensive declient a two year decline,
- 2:06Speaker 1: so they have to do a lot of other things.
- 2:08Speaker 1: They've opened up a hole in left field here, and
- 2:11Speaker 1: they already have questions in centerfield. They've got the kid
- 2:14Speaker 1: Carson Benje coming. Are you going to commit to him? Wow,
- 2:18Speaker 1: that's a big question. And then, as Will Salmon writes
- 2:21Speaker 1: in our notes column today it's a combined notes column,
- 2:23Speaker 1: Will myself Katie wu He says, well, Hey, the fact
- 2:28Speaker 1: that they just traded Nimo got out of his long
- 2:31Speaker 1: term deal five years left by the way, a deal
- 2:34Speaker 1: that yes was too long to start with. Do they
- 2:37Speaker 1: really want to enter into another long term deal with
- 2:39Speaker 1: a Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker? And if they don't,
- 2:43Speaker 1: then how do they fill their outfield hole. So these
- 2:45Speaker 1: are just some of the questions that have arisen in
- 2:48Speaker 1: recent days with these moves. And obviously we've got a
- 2:51Speaker 1: long way to go this offseason, Alana, and a lot
- 2:54Speaker 1: more will happen. It's just as you look at these
- 2:57Speaker 1: moves right now to think there's got to be more,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and yes, there does.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Have to be more. And when you think of the
- 3:03Speaker 2: New York Mets Kennon, obviously with the ownership group, you
- 3:07Speaker 2: don't imagine that they're outfield or their positions that need
- 3:11Speaker 2: to be filled are going to be filled by two
- 3:14Speaker 2: highly touted prospects. Maybe one position is enough for a prospect,
- 3:19Speaker 2: but two if you're the New York Mets, I don't
- 3:20Speaker 2: know that they can put all of their thoughts in
- 3:22Speaker 2: that basket.
- 3:23Speaker 1: No, I don't believe they will. And hey, they've got
- 3:26Speaker 1: some young starting pitchers too that are going to enter
- 3:28Speaker 1: the mix this year. They're not afraid of young players.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Like all teams, they want to mix in young players
- 3:33Speaker 1: to help balance the payroll. Young players give a team life.
- 3:36Speaker 1: There's many things to recommend young players. But you're right
- 3:39Speaker 1: along and they're not going to take a team centered
- 3:42Speaker 1: around Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor and simply say, you
- 3:45Speaker 1: know what, we'll go with kids and left kids and
- 3:47Speaker 1: center kids in the rotation. Not happening. They're going to
- 3:50Speaker 1: do things. And they still have two big players out
- 3:55Speaker 1: in free agency that they want to resign, or at
- 3:58Speaker 1: least we think they want to resign Edwin Diaz. They
- 4:01Speaker 1: certainly want him back, and then Pete Alonzo, it's kind
- 4:05Speaker 1: of questionable whether they want him to come back or
- 4:07Speaker 1: at least be a first basement. If he comes back,
- 4:10Speaker 1: he's going to be a DH in.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Part the closer market Ken, and you mentioned Edwin Diaz.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I believe he headlines that market. But the outfielder market
- 4:19Speaker 2: isn't that deep. I mean you're talking about probably Kyle Tucker.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I don't know if the Mets are going to want
- 4:24Speaker 2: to take on that salary, considering they just got rid
- 4:27Speaker 2: of Neimo's salary and Tucker figures to be three times that.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And then you have Cody Bellinger. Does he go from
- 4:33Speaker 2: the Bronx to Queens? What are you thinking?
- 4:36Speaker 1: I would say as possible. I don't know that you
- 4:38Speaker 1: can ever rule anything out with Steve Cohen as your owner,
- 4:41Speaker 1: but I don't know that it's likely. And then the
- 4:43Speaker 1: question becomes, if you're not doing Tucker, if you're not
- 4:46Speaker 1: doing Bellinger, how are you going to solve this outfield
- 4:50Speaker 1: question that you have. I mentioned the prospect Carson Benjo. Okay,
- 4:53Speaker 1: that's one maybe, and then you have a thin outfield
- 4:58Speaker 1: market in free agency b on those two guys Tucker
- 5:01Speaker 1: and Bellinger outstanding choices, but beyond them Harrison Bader and
- 5:06Speaker 1: a few others. And then maybe they have a trade
- 5:09Speaker 1: in mind, because they do have a number of young players.
- 5:12Speaker 1: They've built up their system really well. Maybe a trade
- 5:15Speaker 1: for an outfielder. I kind of sense that coming with them,
- 5:18Speaker 1: but I don't know for sure. It's just that they've
- 5:20Speaker 1: created a problem here by trading a long time franchise stalwart,
- 5:25Speaker 1: a guy who's extremely popular among fans and who is
- 5:29Speaker 1: still productive in decline somewhat but still productive, and here
- 5:34Speaker 1: they are looking for outfielders.
- 5:36Speaker 2: It's going to be interesting, It really is, because five
- 5:38Speaker 2: years at one hundred and two million or one hundred
- 5:40Speaker 2: and five or whatever was left on Brandon Nimo's deal
- 5:42Speaker 2: is going to be a lot less than what Cody
- 5:44Speaker 2: Bellinger or certainly what Kyle Tucker are going to garner
- 5:48Speaker 2: as far as the free agent market is concerned. Moving
- 5:51Speaker 2: from the New York Mets and the nl East to
- 5:53Speaker 2: the Brewers in the n OL Central Ken Rosenthal Brandon Woodruff,
- 5:56Speaker 2: we know that he's gone back to the brew Crew.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Good for him, and wu is Freddy Peralta Brandon Woodroff
- 6:02Speaker 2: an automatic one two tandem for the Crew.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I don't know that I would say automatic, because the
- 6:08Speaker 1: Brewers are a team that are constantly looking to move
- 6:12Speaker 1: payroll to create payroll flexibility. But at the same time,
- 6:16Speaker 1: Will Salmon and I wrote an article I believe it
- 6:18Speaker 1: was last week after Woodriff accepted, in which we quoted
- 6:22Speaker 1: both owner Mark Attanasio and President Baseball Operations Matt Arnold
- 6:26Speaker 1: saying they are excited about the rotation and saying that
- 6:30Speaker 1: woodrift doesn't necessarily lead to a trade of Peralta. They're
- 6:34Speaker 1: on the record saying this, now things change. We all
- 6:37Speaker 1: know that you can't hold people to their words forever,
- 6:40Speaker 1: but it just seems to me trading Freddy Peralta when
- 6:42Speaker 1: you're only paying him eight million. I know it's only
- 6:45Speaker 1: in a relative sense, that would be a counter productive move.
- 6:48Speaker 1: You've got a potential rotation headed by Peralta, then with
- 6:52Speaker 1: Woodroff and Mazerowski and some others, that's potentially a real strength.
- 6:57Speaker 1: The question for the Brewer is okay, then how do
- 6:59Speaker 1: you create that flexibility we talked about. Do you trade
- 7:02Speaker 1: a reliever like Trevor McGill You do about four million
- 7:06Speaker 1: next year, That doesn't create that much flexibility, Or and
- 7:10Speaker 1: this is the obvious solution to me here, do you
- 7:13Speaker 1: assign Brandon Woodroffe to a multi year deal at a
- 7:16Speaker 1: lower average annual value than the qualifying offer number, which
- 7:20Speaker 1: was just over twenty two million. That to me, seems
- 7:23Speaker 1: to be the way to go. Maybe you do woodrof
- 7:25Speaker 1: at three years, forty five million, you take seven million
- 7:28Speaker 1: dollars off the twenty twenty sixth salary, and you go
- 7:32Speaker 1: from there. I'm not saying that's going to happen. It
- 7:34Speaker 1: just seems to me to be the most obvious solution.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Do you also deal a reliever in terms of lowering
- 7:40Speaker 2: Brandon Woodruff's aav down? Make it a multi year deal?
- 7:44Speaker 2: Do you get rid of a of a relief arm?
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe you do both and that creates I don't know,
- 7:51Speaker 1: ten million, twelve million in flexibility. Again, these are hypotheticals.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I'm just throwing it out there because this is a
- 7:57Speaker 1: team that generally has to maneuver like this and tries
- 8:01Speaker 1: to maneuver like this to keep their payroll at a
- 8:04Speaker 1: certain level. They've got some offensive needs, they've got some
- 8:07Speaker 1: other needs. Bullpen actually is one. But I just don't
- 8:11Speaker 1: know how they're going to do it. And this is
- 8:13Speaker 1: a team that is endlessly creative, and I expect that
- 8:16Speaker 1: we're going to see something funky from them, and I
- 8:18Speaker 1: don't expect it to be a trade of Freddie Perraulton
- 8:21Speaker 1: less unless the return is just so overwhelming, and you
- 8:25Speaker 1: always have to have that caveat in any circumstance. If
- 8:29Speaker 1: a team gets overwhelmed, they'll trade any player. Yeah.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Sticking in the Central, let's talk about the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Katie Wu does a great job. Of course, your colleague
- 8:36Speaker 2: with the Athletics. She wrote about it yesterday. Nolan Arnado,
- 8:39Speaker 2: ken is all but gone. But we've also been saying
- 8:41Speaker 2: that for three years. What do you think happens with Ronado?
- 8:45Speaker 2: And more importantly, Heinin Bloom now attaches money to retaining
- 8:49Speaker 2: better prospects. What's going on in Saint Louis.
- 8:52Speaker 1: That was a watershed trade for them yesterday. And I
- 8:55Speaker 1: know the return is Richard Fitz and the prospect that's okay,
- 8:59Speaker 1: that's not what I'm talking out. The watershed moment was
- 9:02Speaker 1: the inclusion of twenty million in that trade to pay
- 9:05Speaker 1: down the salary of Sonny Gray make him a twenty
- 9:09Speaker 1: one million dollar player for the Red Sox next year.
- 9:11Speaker 1: The Cardinals generally have not done that much in the past,
- 9:15Speaker 1: but now that they've done it once, I expect that
- 9:17Speaker 1: they would do it again for Ronado and maybe even
- 9:19Speaker 1: Wilson Contreras. If Wilson Contreras changes his mind and says,
- 9:23Speaker 1: you know what, we're tearing it down a bit here,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I'd like to go. And he has no trade, as
- 9:28Speaker 1: does Arnado, as did Gray, and all of that is
- 9:32Speaker 1: part of the equation here. But what the Cardinals are
- 9:35Speaker 1: doing is trying to reset their team, and this is
- 9:39Speaker 1: overdue with them, and they have some other pieces Brendan Donovan,
- 9:43Speaker 1: Lars Newt, Bar, Nolan Gorman that they can also trade now.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I don't know that they're going to tear it all
- 9:48Speaker 1: the way down and just become a non competitive team
- 9:51Speaker 1: for three or four years. I don't necessarily expect that.
- 9:55Speaker 1: But the Sonny Gray move brought them back a major
- 9:58Speaker 1: league picture in fits a high potential prospect with Brendan Clark.
- 10:03Speaker 1: They've got some things going in this trade alone that
- 10:06Speaker 1: if I'm a Cardinals fan, I'm encouraged by it, because
- 10:09Speaker 1: it was time to rip the band aid off. They've
- 10:12Speaker 1: done that. They've got a long ways to go, and Arnatto,
- 10:15Speaker 1: who knows where he might end up, maybe the Red
- 10:18Speaker 1: Sox if they don't get Bregman back. Katie listened to
- 10:21Speaker 1: a few other teams. I don't know that any is
- 10:23Speaker 1: a great possibility, but clearly they are motivated to do
- 10:27Speaker 1: some things here, and man.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I tell you what that is the big domino I
- 10:30Speaker 2: think as a position player can to fall. I mean,
- 10:33Speaker 2: obviously Kyle Tucker to a certain extent, but what happens
- 10:36Speaker 2: with Bregman at third base I think will constitute what
- 10:39Speaker 2: happens in a lot of other places as well. Nolan
- 10:41Speaker 2: are not willing to expand his no trade clause. Again,
- 10:44Speaker 2: this is a guy that's been in trade talks or
- 10:46Speaker 2: at least conversations for a number of years. Now, where
- 10:49Speaker 2: do you think, realistically Nolan ends up? Does he go
- 10:53Speaker 2: to the Tigers? Does do you see him someplace else?
- 10:56Speaker 2: Is Boston a fit?
- 10:59Speaker 1: I don't know. And it's a little bit problematic with
- 11:01Speaker 1: him now. He's a Hall of Fame player, he's one
- 11:03Speaker 1: of the greats of this generation, one of the great
- 11:05Speaker 1: defenders we've seen in this sport period. But he is
- 11:10Speaker 1: in offensive decline or has been now. Maybe getting out
- 11:13Speaker 1: of Saint Louis and a change of scenery it's not
- 11:16Speaker 1: the easiest park to hit in would do him well.
- 11:19Speaker 1: But Katie, I've been sorry, Alta, I'm thinking about Katie's story.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I don't see an obvious fit. And maybe it's Detroit,
- 11:27Speaker 1: but they're not going to want to necessarily take on
- 11:29Speaker 1: a lot of money. Maybe it's some other club, But
- 11:33Speaker 1: this is going to be an interesting scenario to follow because,
- 11:37Speaker 1: as I said, there's no clear cut team with a
- 11:40Speaker 1: needed third base that says, oh, I've got to have
- 11:43Speaker 1: Noan Arnaudo. It's going to be a tight squeeze for
- 11:46Speaker 1: whoever does it.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it is strange. It would be nice if you
- 11:49Speaker 2: could have like just a designated defender and throw Nolan
- 11:53Speaker 2: Arnaudo out there with the decline in terms of offense.
- 11:56Speaker 2: But you're right, he's headed to Cooper cent I truly
- 11:58Speaker 2: believe that. All Right, much more to come on Fair
- 12:00Speaker 2: Territory with Ken Rosenthal on this pre Thanksgiving live episode.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Get your questions in. Ken will be answering them next
- 12:07Speaker 2: right after a couple of words from our friends at Foul.
- 12:11Speaker 3: If you are still carrying a clunky leather brick that
- 12:15Speaker 3: can be mistaken for an old school wallet, may I
- 12:18Speaker 3: introduce you to what Eric Kratz is getting himself for
- 12:22Speaker 3: the holidays.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I mean, this is the greatest wallet that I've ever
- 12:26Speaker 1: seen in my life. Your credit card's fitting here. It's
- 12:29Speaker 1: a justable lifetime guaranteed like what what? Like? This is
- 12:34Speaker 1: a must have for the holidays. Absolute must have.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Ridge Olive matt That is the design that Kratz has
- 12:41Speaker 3: right now and you can get a hold of that.
- 12:43Speaker 3: There's over fifty plus colors and styles to choose from.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Over at Ridge. You can even get a wallet that
- 12:48Speaker 3: features every NFL, MLB or college team.
- 12:51Speaker 4: And for a.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Limited time, Ridge is having their huge Black Friday sale.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Head to Ridge dot com slash foul to get up
- 12:57Speaker 3: to forty seven percent off your order. This is by
- 12:59Speaker 3: far the big discount they've given all year. That's Ridge
- 13:02Speaker 3: dot com slash foul for up to forty seven percent
- 13:04Speaker 3: off your order during their biggest sale of the year.
- 13:07Speaker 3: After your purchase, they'll ask you where you heard about Ridge.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Tell them foul Territory sent you.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Okay, welcome back to fair Territory. Get those questions in
- 13:20Speaker 2: for Ken Rosenthal. Not often do you get to ask
- 13:23Speaker 2: Ken a question directly. The first one Ken is in
- 13:25Speaker 2: regard to the Mets outfield. We were talking about it earlier, right,
- 13:28Speaker 2: We know that Nimo isn't there. They have some holes.
- 13:31Speaker 2: So this question, given the fact that Tatis Junior is
- 13:34Speaker 2: still a two hundred and eighty six million of three
- 13:36Speaker 2: hundred and forty because you see the Mets taking on
- 13:39Speaker 2: a bad contract Darvish or Croninworth to fill an outfield hole.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Thoughts on what San Diego would want. My friend, I
- 13:46Speaker 2: guess is a is a Padres fan.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Well, there's a lot here to think about. And one
- 13:51Speaker 1: is with the Padres even trade Tatisse And yes, they
- 13:56Speaker 1: are in much more of a financial buind than they've
- 13:58Speaker 1: been in in past years. They don't have as much
- 14:01Speaker 1: flexibility and they have to address their pitching with Cese
- 14:04Speaker 1: and King free agents and Robert Suarez as well a
- 14:07Speaker 1: free agent. Would they trade Tatis? Yankee fans I think
- 14:11Speaker 1: have been fantasizing about this too. It seems to me
- 14:13Speaker 1: right now it's more fantasy than reality. Tatus is a
- 14:17Speaker 1: beloved player in San Diego. He is still young, he
- 14:20Speaker 1: is still highly productive. He's been a bit more inconsistent
- 14:24Speaker 1: than you would want. I get it, but man, I
- 14:27Speaker 1: have a hard time seeing them doing that now. The
- 14:29Speaker 1: idea of attaching another contract Tatatosa's contract, that's an interesting
- 14:35Speaker 1: idea too. And then the question becomes if the Mets
- 14:38Speaker 1: are taking on all they that money, what are they
- 14:40Speaker 1: giving back? And the return diminishes the more money you
- 14:44Speaker 1: take on as a team. So if you're the Mets,
- 14:47Speaker 1: you're taking all of Tatis and all of Crona worth.
- 14:49Speaker 1: You're telling the Padres, uh huh, that's what we're doing.
- 14:53Speaker 1: We're taking all this money off your hands. You're not
- 14:55Speaker 1: getting our premium prospects in return. To me. It's all
- 15:00Speaker 1: a fantastical it's not necessarily going to happen, but it's
- 15:05Speaker 1: going to be interesting to see what San Diego does
- 15:08Speaker 1: this offseason to create some flexibility because they are again
- 15:13Speaker 1: not as well positioned as they've been in the past
- 15:17Speaker 1: to spend money. When Peter Sidler passed, it became a
- 15:20Speaker 1: different equator. And they're for sale as well, So all
- 15:24Speaker 1: of these things enter it, but man to trade tatiss
- 15:27Speaker 1: I just see that as too far a bridge to cross.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a big one. That's a big ask if
- 15:34Speaker 2: you're a Met fan for sure. All Right, this is
- 15:36Speaker 2: in regards to the Boston Red Sox. Are the Red
- 15:38Speaker 2: Sox going to re enter the top five payroll now?
- 15:41Speaker 2: Considering that they seem like they're ready to compete. We
- 15:43Speaker 2: know that Sunny Gray is there. You don't necessarily think
- 15:46Speaker 2: he's a number two, but he is an upgrade in
- 15:48Speaker 2: most estimations of Lucas Giulio. Do they re enter the
- 15:52Speaker 2: top echelon of spending money?
- 15:54Speaker 1: Ken They're in position too, There's no question about that.
- 15:58Speaker 1: And the Devor's trade created all this flexibility for them,
- 16:01Speaker 1: and it enables them now to play in the deepest
- 16:05Speaker 1: waters possible. Are they top five again next year? I
- 16:08Speaker 1: don't know exactly, but it certainly seems like they're going
- 16:12Speaker 1: to be aggressive. And one more thing about the Red Sox.
- 16:14Speaker 1: People were critical of Craig Breslow as chief baseball officer
- 16:18Speaker 1: early and the deadline the first one wasn't so great. Okay,
- 16:23Speaker 1: last off season was one of the best off seasons
- 16:26Speaker 1: in recent memory by any team. It was Crochet, it
- 16:32Speaker 1: was narvaas, it was Chapman, and then it was topped
- 16:34Speaker 1: off by Bregman four for four with those guys. So
- 16:39Speaker 1: Breslo by doing that, in my mind, should have increased
- 16:44Speaker 1: the faith of Red Sox fans in his ability. Now,
- 16:47Speaker 1: the Devs trade is a whole different story. It's a
- 16:49Speaker 1: whole different scenario, entirely but I'm interested to see what
- 16:53Speaker 1: they do. I don't love the Gray move if he
- 16:56Speaker 1: is the only starter they get. But again I.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Think complete we knew that the Red Sox can. We're
- 17:02Speaker 2: not going to be able to extend Bregman in season,
- 17:05Speaker 2: even in wildcard postseason, because he's a Scott Boris client.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Free agency is king when you're a Boris client. I
- 17:10Speaker 2: respect that. Does Bregman go back to Boston or is
- 17:13Speaker 2: he playing third for somebody else?
- 17:16Speaker 1: I expect him to be back in Boston. And in
- 17:19Speaker 1: free agency, when you say something like this, you're playing
- 17:23Speaker 1: with fire because free agency things happen that you never expect.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I say this all the time. It's actually true. Of
- 17:29Speaker 1: all transactions, none of these trades that have happened so
- 17:32Speaker 1: far were anticipated by anyone, and free agency can be wild.
- 17:36Speaker 1: But with Bregman, it was such a good fit. He
- 17:40Speaker 1: was so perfect for them. Now he's going to be
- 17:42Speaker 1: perfect in the estimation of other clubs on their rosters
- 17:45Speaker 1: as well, And all it takes is one to obviously
- 17:50Speaker 1: take him away. But man, he is really the right
- 17:54Speaker 1: guy for the Red Sox.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I tell you what. And I don't think anybody
- 17:57Speaker 2: embraced the Boston culture as much as Alexgman did last
- 18:00Speaker 2: season during the postseason, posting clips from the town trying
- 18:04Speaker 2: to get into the postseason. But he knows what Boston
- 18:07Speaker 2: fans want. Ken Rosenthal, all right, shaq fu for f
- 18:10Speaker 2: four Z has this to say. What's AMI's best landing
- 18:13Speaker 2: spot to compete against the Dodgers' long term?
- 18:18Speaker 1: It's a good question, and we're going to get to
- 18:20Speaker 1: him I in a little bit, But the Yankees are
- 18:23Speaker 1: certainly a team that's going to be in The Giants
- 18:26Speaker 1: have been linked to him. I guess they've been scouting
- 18:29Speaker 1: him or had been scouting him, as all teams have.
- 18:32Speaker 1: What's fascinating about him is that he doesn't want to
- 18:35Speaker 1: be a Dodger. And again, we're going to get to
- 18:37Speaker 1: that the next segment, and I've got some things to
- 18:39Speaker 1: say about that.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal, te's in the next segment, perhaps, dude and door,
- 18:46Speaker 2: all right, Thanksgiving us tomorrow. We hope you all have
- 18:48Speaker 2: a wonderful Thanksgiving. Ryan s seven four one four wants
- 18:52Speaker 2: to know football on TV or holiday movies? Ken, big
- 18:55Speaker 2: family gathering or a small cozy one pumpkin pie or
- 18:58Speaker 2: apple pie. That is a headed question.
- 19:00Speaker 1: There all right, pumpkin pie. First of all, that's number
- 19:04Speaker 1: one football, yeah for sure, over holiday movies. And it's
- 19:08Speaker 1: our favorite family holiday, Thanksgiving is and we gather our
- 19:11Speaker 1: whole family for it. So yes, it's not a big
- 19:15Speaker 1: gathering necessarily, but it's a priority for all of our
- 19:18Speaker 1: children who are living all over the place to get.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Back home good.
- 19:22Speaker 2: I love that. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Lisa and
- 19:25Speaker 2: the Rosenthal family. For me, it's football for sure. Never
- 19:28Speaker 2: a holiday movie. I can't stand Hallmark. Yeah, big family
- 19:31Speaker 2: gathering is fine. And no pie, okay, just wine, just wine,
- 19:36Speaker 2: all right, that's gonna do it for her girl and
- 19:39Speaker 2: Ken here on this Wednesday, when we come back after
- 19:42Speaker 2: a word from our friends at Foul, we're gonna be
- 19:44Speaker 2: talking about our dude and dork of the week.

- 20:46Speaker 1: Dude, dude, dude.
- 20:54Speaker 2: All right, I want to start this, Sonny Gray. Good
- 20:57Speaker 2: for you, buddy, forty one million dollars for two thousand,
- 21:00Speaker 2: twenty six. I believe it is one of the biggest
- 21:02Speaker 2: contracts in terms of a one year payout. Ken, you
- 21:05Speaker 2: would certainly know more than I for a pitcher. Good
- 21:10Speaker 2: for him, doesn't matter where the money comes from. I've
- 21:12Speaker 2: take forty one million in a heartbeat, and now he
- 21:14Speaker 2: gets to pitch for a possible contender, and that's good
- 21:17Speaker 2: for him as well.
- 21:18Speaker 1: No question, Sonny Gray a worthy choice for due to
- 21:21Speaker 1: the week. And I'm gonna go with the guy where
- 21:23Speaker 1: we're just talking about before we went into break my
- 21:26Speaker 1: dude of the week, Tatsuya am I. And here's why.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Too often in this sport we get sanitized answers, we
- 21:33Speaker 1: get a non bulletin board material because everyone is so
- 21:38Speaker 1: careful with what they say. This dude might already be
- 21:41Speaker 1: my favorite player because what he said was he wants
- 21:45Speaker 1: to beat the Dodgers. He wants to take them down.
- 21:48Speaker 1: He doesn't want to be a Dodger. Now, I'm not
- 21:50Speaker 1: ripping the Dodgers or questioning that or anything like that.
- 21:54Speaker 1: They're great. We know that, back to back World Series champions.
- 21:56Speaker 1: But this is what you want to hear, and this
- 21:59Speaker 1: is the kind of thing saying that shows you the
- 22:01Speaker 1: kind of competitor that Umai is going to be. He said,
- 22:04Speaker 1: of course, playing together with Otaniamamoto and Sasaki sounds like
- 22:07Speaker 1: it could be fun, but winning the World Series by
- 22:10Speaker 1: defeating a team like that is something I feel would
- 22:13Speaker 1: truly have value in my life. I cannot wait for
- 22:16Speaker 1: this guy to get here. And David Bissey tweeted that
- 22:19Speaker 1: the host of Dodgers Talk, he's already trying to stoke
- 22:22Speaker 1: the fire. Perfect, let's go.
- 22:25Speaker 2: But where does this hatred? Where does this vitrol for
- 22:28Speaker 2: the Los Angeles Dodgers come from?
- 22:31Speaker 4: Where does it come from?
- 22:32Speaker 1: It's a competitor. It's a guy saying, you know what,
- 22:35Speaker 1: it would be cool to take them down, and.
- 22:39Speaker 2: To take them down. Where does he end up to
- 22:41Speaker 2: take them down? Who's going to be the competitor that's
- 22:44Speaker 2: going to take down the Dodgers.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I don't know exactly, Alanna. We're gonna find out in
- 22:48Speaker 1: free agency. But I remember Mark Messier, before the New
- 22:51Speaker 1: York Rangers won the Stanley Cup in nineteen ninety four,
- 22:54Speaker 1: said you've got to slay the dragon. Now, he was
- 22:56Speaker 1: talking about the dragon of the Rangers past and all that.
- 23:00Speaker 1: But that's what in my saying here, we want to
- 23:02Speaker 1: slay the dragon. Good luck to you, buddy, Yeah, no.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Doubt about it. It's fun. I love it. I do
- 23:07Speaker 2: think it is good for the sport, certainly for people
- 23:10Speaker 2: to want to take down the almighty dragon. I get
- 23:14Speaker 2: that very much. Okay, time now for our dork of
- 23:17Speaker 2: the week.
- 23:26Speaker 4: All right, Ken Helstein Berner.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I mean it's mine's Helsteinbrunner. I mean, I don't know
- 23:30Speaker 2: how it could be any how, it cannot be anybody's
- 23:33Speaker 2: dork of the week. You're trying to tell me that
- 23:36Speaker 2: we can't assume that the New York Yankees are profitable.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I don't care, Ken Rosenthal, if the New York Yankees
- 23:42Speaker 2: go oh in one's sixty two for the next two decades.
- 23:46Speaker 2: The New York Yankees are one of the most profitable
- 23:50Speaker 2: franchises in all of sports, Ken Rosenthal, not just our
- 23:54Speaker 2: great game of baseball. This is silly. I want to say,
- 23:57Speaker 2: as you said it on Foul Territory. Open the books,
- 24:00Speaker 2: let me see, let me see the p and L
- 24:02Speaker 2: of the New York Yankees. I guarantee you that the
- 24:04Speaker 2: New York Yankees are profitable.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I would expect that the New York Yankees are doing okay.
- 24:10Speaker 1: And if Halseteimer is frustrated with the way his finances are,
- 24:15Speaker 1: he can sell them for what eight million dollars or something.
- 24:18Speaker 1: He's doing okay too. So that's a worthy dork of
- 24:21Speaker 1: the Week. I've got something of my own and it's
- 24:23Speaker 1: related to the Yankees, and it's all the people and
- 24:28Speaker 1: life actually might have been included in this conversation, all
- 24:31Speaker 1: the people who thought Sonny Gray couldn't pitch in New York,
- 24:34Speaker 1: and again, I might have been one of them. So
- 24:36Speaker 1: often I tell fans this all the time, and I
- 24:39Speaker 1: try to be deliberate in telling people this. So often
- 24:42Speaker 1: we don't know the whole story, and we can only
- 24:45Speaker 1: judge by what we see, and that's fair and by
- 24:47Speaker 1: what we hear. But with Sonny Gray, there was more
- 24:50Speaker 1: to the story, and I heard it yesterday and then
- 24:53Speaker 1: Eric Kratz alluded to it on FT. What he said
- 24:56Speaker 1: was that the Yankees tried to change Sonny Gray. I'm
- 24:59Speaker 1: not going to get into all the d details, the sweeper,
- 25:01Speaker 1: slider cutter stuff, but they tried to change him and
- 25:05Speaker 1: the Red Sox from what I understand, and basically told
- 25:08Speaker 1: Sonny Gray, you come here, you just be yourself. And
- 25:11Speaker 1: that was what caused the problem for Sonny Gray, the
- 25:14Speaker 1: difficulties he had with pitching coach Larry Rothschild not New York.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Sonny Gray is not afraid, and he showed he was
- 25:21Speaker 1: not afraid. Demonstrated it yesterday by waving his no trade
- 25:25Speaker 1: clause to go to the Boston Red Sox, another high
- 25:28Speaker 1: pressure market. He could have vetoed them. He could have
- 25:31Speaker 1: just waited until the Cardinals found a taker in a
- 25:34Speaker 1: different market. But that's not what he did. So all
- 25:37Speaker 1: of us who question Sonny Gray, hey, we're the dorks
- 25:40Speaker 1: of the week because you know what, there was more
- 25:42Speaker 1: to it than met the eye. Yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Twenty seventeen with the Yankees, Ken eleven starts three point
- 25:48Speaker 2: seven two era one point a war. Twenty eighteen with
- 25:51Speaker 2: New York twenty three starts a four to NINERA and
- 25:56Speaker 2: point one war. So all right, good luck in Boston,
- 25:59Speaker 2: Sunny Gray. Another historic franchise. He's pitched for a lot
- 26:02Speaker 2: of them in his career. All right, for those of
- 26:04Speaker 2: you still with us, thanks so much on this pre
- 26:07Speaker 2: Thanksgiving show. Doctor, I don't even know how to say that,
- 26:11Speaker 2: Doctor Foo to you, Doc, I don't know. I don't
- 26:13Speaker 2: want to get myself into trouble.
- 26:14Speaker 1: So here we go.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Heam take her run at Bregman as a second baseman.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Apparently he was willing to move last off season. So
- 26:22Speaker 2: what do you think about the position change? For him.
- 26:25Speaker 1: That's an interesting question because he was willing to move,
- 26:28Speaker 1: and in fact, when the Red Sox acquired him initially,
- 26:32Speaker 1: there was some talk of him playing second base, with
- 26:34Speaker 1: Devers staying at third. I expect, for the right deal
- 26:38Speaker 1: that Alex Bregman would be willing to move, but I'm
- 26:41Speaker 1: not sure I see an opening with the team at
- 26:44Speaker 1: second base that would necessarily justify that. Now, granted, I'm
- 26:49Speaker 1: just taking this question. I'm not looking at the entire
- 26:51Speaker 1: landscape at this moment, but it seems to me his
- 26:55Speaker 1: greater value would be a third. Could be wrong about that,
- 26:58Speaker 1: and certainly, with both him and Bob Baschett, teams can
- 27:02Speaker 1: look at those guys at a variety of positions. With Bishet,
- 27:05Speaker 1: the chances are he will move off of shortstop become
- 27:08Speaker 1: a second basement or third baseman, And with Bregman certainly
- 27:11Speaker 1: can play second or third as well. But he's still
- 27:14Speaker 1: a pretty good defensive third baseman, and if I were
- 27:17Speaker 1: a team looking at him, that's where I would want
- 27:19Speaker 1: him most. Now, if I'm a team with a deficiency
- 27:22Speaker 1: at second, I'm certainly talking to Alex Bregman and saying,
- 27:25Speaker 1: you know what, what do you think? Yeah?
- 27:28Speaker 2: Very interesting. All right, a baseball related to something, Ken Rosenthal,
- 27:32Speaker 2: that you are thankful for as we get ready to
- 27:34Speaker 2: say goodbye here.
- 27:36Speaker 1: All right, Alan, I've thought about this a little bit
- 27:39Speaker 1: and I've got a surprising answer. I am thankful for
- 27:43Speaker 1: Rob Manfred introducing the pitchclock, because the pitch clock has
- 27:47Speaker 1: transformed this sport. It has made it a more entertaining product.
- 27:51Speaker 1: It has made it something that has become again kind
- 27:55Speaker 1: of a hot sport. And you measured that in a
- 27:57Speaker 1: lot of ways, and maybe people would say I'm overstating it,
- 28:01Speaker 1: but it definitely has changed things. It's definitely made the
- 28:04Speaker 1: sport more watchable. And that's the whole point, right, It's
- 28:08Speaker 1: an entertainment product. So kudros to Manfred and MLB for
- 28:12Speaker 1: getting that done. There were some questions about it, questions
- 28:15Speaker 1: about how it would affect the game effect, perhaps injuries,
- 28:19Speaker 1: but it has been a resounding, resounding success.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so much dead time is gone thanks to that
- 28:26Speaker 2: pitch clock. I agree with you there, I'll see your
- 28:28Speaker 2: pitch clock. I will raise you. Players really embracing the WBC. Ken,
- 28:32Speaker 2: I love the WBC. I always have, and I feel
- 28:35Speaker 2: like players are so much more inclined to want to
- 28:40Speaker 2: play for their country. Whether it's international players of course,
- 28:43Speaker 2: which are such a huge part of our game. It's
- 28:45Speaker 2: such a global game, but even American players are really
- 28:48Speaker 2: wanting to put on the USA jersey and play for
- 28:51Speaker 2: their country. And I think that's really special. And when
- 28:53Speaker 2: you see Shohei Otani be able to pitch to Mike
- 28:56Speaker 2: Trout for the final out of the WBC, I think
- 28:59Speaker 2: that's really something that is incredibly incredibly special. I am
- 29:02Speaker 2: thankful for you. I am thankful for our foul Territory family. Ken,
- 29:06Speaker 2: enjoy your Thanksgiving to all of you guys. Thanks for
- 29:09Speaker 2: being here.
- 29:10Speaker 4: We appreciate it.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Ken Happy thanks a J right, Yeah sure, even AJ Sure?
- 29:16Speaker 2: Why not have a happy Thanksgiving everybody. Dodgers' Territory returns
- 29:22Speaker 2: tomorrow and Ken is back on Monday, ten am Eastern.
