- 0:00Speaker 1: Granny, are you high?
- 0:02Speaker 2: It's one more thing. Armstrong and Getty.
- 0:05Speaker 1: One more thing.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Before we get to Granny, are you high? Which is
- 0:11Speaker 2: just an awful scenario. So my youngest is going to,
- 0:17Speaker 2: he started high school. And it just also happens to
- 0:21Speaker 2: be his first time of going to regular school full
- 0:25Speaker 2: time his whole life. For a variety of reasons I
- 0:29Speaker 2: won't get into. So he's got, he missed out on
- 0:33Speaker 2: a lot of not only the educational stuff, which I've
- 0:36Speaker 2: gotten him caught up with over the years with private
- 0:39Speaker 2: teachers and stuff like that. You can't catch anybody up
- 0:42Speaker 2: on the social stuff. He missed out on many, many
- 0:46Speaker 2: years of the social interactions and all that sort of thing.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So I've been trying to help coach him through that.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I didn't really know what to say about this one
- 0:53Speaker 2: specifically yesterday. So they played some sort of volleyball or
- 1:00Speaker 2: something like that in gym class. Boys against the girls.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Boys win. Game's over. He says to one of the girls,
- 1:11Speaker 2: they're walking back to the locker room. He said, nice game.
- 1:14Speaker 2: She said, fuck off.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Wow. Okay.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And he said, what is that? Like, why'd she do that?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Or what am I supposed to say?
- 1:25Speaker 3: Oh.
- 1:27Speaker 4: It's a bad attitude is what that is.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Or she thought he was being sarcastic. Hard to say.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Or she was just bitter. Yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 2: It is hard to say.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I don't know. I also, one of the things with
- 1:43Speaker 2: being an older parent is I'm a full 40 years
- 1:50Speaker 2: removed from kids that age.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I don't think any girl would have, if I'd have
- 1:59Speaker 2: said nice game, would have ever said fuck off to
- 2:01Speaker 2: me when I was in high school. No girl I
- 2:03Speaker 2: went to school with. I don't think.
- 2:05Speaker 4: There, I can remember several.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I mean, if I meant it, if I wasn't, and
- 2:09Speaker 2: he wasn't being sarcastic, but.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Well, I can remember several girls.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I think even if I was being sarcastic. Anyway, sorry, Katie.
- 2:14Speaker 4: No, that just had a really bad attitude.
- 2:16Speaker 5: And, you know, you know, especially like during soccer and basketball,
- 2:19Speaker 5: we line up and you good game. You high five
- 2:21Speaker 5: the other team after the game.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 4: There were, there were girls that, Just were so bitter
- 2:26Speaker 4: about the loss that.
- 2:27Speaker 5: They wouldn't do it or they'd bring their hand up
- 2:29Speaker 5: so they didn't have to high five the other team.
- 2:31Speaker 4: It's just a bad sportsmanship.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Well, there's no doubt we're a much, much coarser society
- 2:37Speaker 2: than the last time I was in a high school,
- 2:39Speaker 2: which again is a long time ago. uh so i
- 2:44Speaker 2: just you know i still have in my mind what
- 2:47Speaker 2: that was like and it's changed little by little over
- 2:50Speaker 2: many many many years that we're a course of society
- 2:52Speaker 2: you hear that sort of language in public in a
- 2:54Speaker 2: way that you did not when i was that age
- 2:56Speaker 2: so part of it is that.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah that's that's true i suppose i mean it's it's
- 3:01Speaker 1: the modern go to hell or yeah i guess with
- 3:07Speaker 1: you or a pox upon your name i guess if
- 3:09Speaker 1: you want to go far enough back it's the attitude
- 3:13Speaker 1: that's more curious to me.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Unless I'm wrong I can't imagine some girl telling me
- 3:17Speaker 2: to go to hell just after making a comment like
- 3:20Speaker 2: that but anyway I don't.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Know if someone came to me and said.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Would you rather go to high school or could I
- 3:28Speaker 5: cut off your left hand I'd say take the hand.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Give me a nub I don't care take them both
- 3:35Speaker 2: I'll learn to hold a spoon with my toes right.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Wow good lord That's a little insensitive toward the handless. Wow.
- 3:45Speaker 1: That's funny. I didn't have such a negative experience, but
- 3:48Speaker 1: I also went to a pretty small high school.
- 3:51Speaker 4: So did I.
- 3:51Speaker 2: But you did too. I don't know what percentage it is.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I know lots of people that would say the exact
- 3:58Speaker 2: same thing Katie and I just said. I also know
- 4:00Speaker 2: lots of people that they loved it. So I don't
- 4:03Speaker 2: know what the percentages are. I have no idea if
- 4:05Speaker 2: it's 50-50, 90-10. I have no idea.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah, there are aspects of it I really enjoyed, but
- 4:10Speaker 1: I was sure as hell done with it when it
- 4:12Speaker 1: was over. Oh, my God. I couldn't wait to get out.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yes, I'd rather step in front of a moving car. Hopefully,
- 4:18Speaker 2: it's going very, very fast than do high school again. Yeah.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So that was how much I enjoyed it. How about you, Michael?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Where are you on it?
- 4:27Speaker 3: I'm like Joe. Some of it I liked, but most
- 4:29Speaker 3: of it, especially my junior and senior year, I was
- 4:31Speaker 3: ready to get out of there.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:35Speaker 2: But I don't know. I didn't know what to say.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I said, well, some people are miserable and it's got nothing.
- 4:40Speaker 2: You didn't do anything wrong. I've used this line several
- 4:42Speaker 2: times already after a week of school, you did nothing wrong.
- 4:46Speaker 2: So don't worry about it.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. People are weird.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Oh, he's got to think it drives him. Cause he's,
- 4:55Speaker 2: he's always had his whole life. And this is a
- 4:57Speaker 2: challenge for him. He worries way too much about what
- 4:59Speaker 2: other people do that have nothing to do. I mean, it's,
- 5:01Speaker 2: you know, it's classic mind your own business. And, uh,
- 5:04Speaker 2: Like in gym class, they're supposed to run over this
- 5:07Speaker 2: hill and then the runaways are supposed to run to
- 5:10Speaker 2: a thing. But you go over a hill where the
- 5:11Speaker 2: gym teacher can't see you, see you. And a lot
- 5:13Speaker 2: of people go over the hill, stop, wait a certain
- 5:15Speaker 2: amount of time and then run back rather than running
- 5:18Speaker 2: the entire distance. And it drives him nuts. And because
- 5:21Speaker 2: he's a rule follower like I am, he runs the
- 5:23Speaker 2: whole way and runs back. And I said, you're doing
- 5:25Speaker 2: nothing wrong. You know, that's their choice in life. And
- 5:28Speaker 2: it will either work for them or it won't. But
- 5:30Speaker 2: you're doing nothing wrong.
- 5:32Speaker 5: I remember my dad used to say to me, like
- 5:34Speaker 5: when big stuff would happen, he'll go, Kate, in 20 years,
- 5:38Speaker 5: you're not even going to remember this.
- 5:40Speaker 2: That's a good one.
- 5:41Speaker 5: And I can remember him saying that to me, but
- 5:43Speaker 5: I cannot remember what the situation was he was saying
- 5:46Speaker 5: it to me about, but it was life shattering at
- 5:48Speaker 5: that moment.
- 5:49Speaker 2: That's funny. You can remember the advice, but not the event,
- 5:52Speaker 2: which was his point.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yep. And 20 years is probably an unnecessarily long horizon, too.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I mean, 20 weeks, please. It's like you're always saying
- 6:01Speaker 1: about Jack when you're on vacation, these big news stories,
- 6:05Speaker 1: you know, you miss them and it doesn't matter. Oh, yeah.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I think I was roughly a freshman or sophomore in
- 6:11Speaker 2: college when I was slapping my head and thinking, why
- 6:14Speaker 2: did I ever care so much about that back in
- 6:16Speaker 2: high school? It didn't take long.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Part of it, I think, is anthropological, though, because, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 1: somebody made the point that If a teenager says to you,
- 6:26Speaker 1: this is the most blank I've ever been, it is. Sure.
- 6:28Speaker 1: This is the most in love I've ever been. This
- 6:31Speaker 1: is the most heartbroken I've ever been. This is the
- 6:33Speaker 1: hardest thing I've ever done. It's true. And so it
- 6:36Speaker 1: looms large in your caveman brain as an experience that
- 6:40Speaker 1: you really need to make a note of. Mm-hmm. When
- 6:42Speaker 1: you realize with a little perspective that you're going to
- 6:45Speaker 1: have a million experiences, and that's just one of them,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and it'll be fine.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So many of the cool kids end up being losers
- 6:51Speaker 3: in life.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, when they peak in high school.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Oh, my God. So true.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So true. I've got many examples of those.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And some that actually did well in life, I've found
- 7:02Speaker 1: ways to sabotage them online and hurt them in the
- 7:07Speaker 1: modern world. Spread terrible rumors, that sort of thing.
- 7:12Speaker 2: God, I've got a horrible schadenfreude on one of those. Like,
- 7:16Speaker 2: I have no connection with anybody I went to high school.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I haven't spoken a word to anybody I went to
- 7:21Speaker 2: high school with. since graduation night for 99 of them
- 7:29Speaker 2: and then there's a couple i've talked to a couple
- 7:31Speaker 2: of times 40 years ago but none of them said
- 7:33Speaker 2: so i just have no friends from high school or
- 7:35Speaker 2: connection with them and i know that's unusual but i
- 7:37Speaker 2: just got nothing um but somehow and i can't imagine
- 7:40Speaker 2: where it was because i've never looked into it i
- 7:43Speaker 2: don't remember most of their names i have no idea
- 7:45Speaker 2: where anybody ended up or whatever they did for the
- 7:46Speaker 2: most part or anything like that at this point and
- 7:49Speaker 2: uh but somebody one one of the like star pupils
- 7:53Speaker 2: or whatever crossed my path. And I, I saw what
- 7:55Speaker 2: he's doing and where he is. And I was like, wow.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And a terrible, terrible, not Christian, immature schadenfreude sort of way.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Relatable.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Come on. I do not approve.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Very good.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I can remember him. He was such a dick. I
- 8:15Speaker 2: remember him belittling me specifically one time over a grade
- 8:20Speaker 2: I got on a test and he got on a test.
- 8:22Speaker 2: He was such an effing dick. He was the most
- 8:24Speaker 2: pompous dick I've ever met in my life. And finding
- 8:26Speaker 2: out he's not doing very well at all, especially compared
- 8:29Speaker 2: to me, was very satisfying.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Again, not admirable at all, but completely understandable. Yes, indeed.
- 8:39Speaker 1: There's one guy I went to high school with who,
- 8:43Speaker 1: you know, as soon as I... you know, put high
- 8:45Speaker 1: school in my rear view mirror. I was absolutely certain
- 8:48Speaker 1: he would be dead or in jail, like for good
- 8:51Speaker 1: within five years. And I've tried using the power of
- 8:55Speaker 1: the internet to, to figure out what happened to him.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And I can't find him on earth. And even if
- 9:01Speaker 1: he'd croaked, shouldn't it be in some newspaper article somewhere?
- 9:05Speaker 4: If he was.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Sentenced to something, I just, I can't find him at all.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Maybe he's your Senator or something. I doubt that.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Oh, my God. No, he was so headed for, like,
- 9:19Speaker 1: the penitentiary. Yeah, which is too bad when you can
- 9:22Speaker 1: see that coming. Oh, 100% certainty.
- 9:26Speaker 2: That's rough. Any idea what his home life, not to
- 9:28Speaker 2: take all the fun out of this?
- 9:29Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sure it was awful. I had clues.
- 9:32Speaker 2: That's its own weird thing, too. I know this one guy.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I could name him. I only know what he's up
- 9:38Speaker 2: to because one of my brothers keep track of the
- 9:40Speaker 2: people that went to high school like normal people. This guy,
- 9:45Speaker 2: he had an awful home life. I had quite an
- 9:48Speaker 2: inkling of it at the time. He was like raising
- 9:51Speaker 2: out with his younger brother one time and he showed
- 9:53Speaker 2: up where we are like, what are you doing here?
- 9:55Speaker 2: We have school tomorrow. He was like having to be
- 9:57Speaker 2: the parent to his younger sister. and he had a
- 10:02Speaker 2: you know he had to take over from his loser
- 10:04Speaker 2: parents and uh and he is he ended up being
- 10:06Speaker 2: a cop and successful having a family guy it's funny
- 10:10Speaker 2: how that some people go that direction some people go the.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Other and i have no idea why yeah yeah i
- 10:16Speaker 1: i have a vague memory of uh of his dad
- 10:20Speaker 1: was involved in crimes somehow. And, and this guy was
- 10:24Speaker 1: good with his fists cause he had to be, um,
- 10:26Speaker 1: it was that situation, but yeah, but he was mean,
- 10:28Speaker 1: he's mean as a snake, but you know, that sort
- 10:31Speaker 1: of life will make you mean.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Sure.
- 10:33Speaker 1: In, in a lot of cases. Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 3: So anyway, still enjoyed my gym teacher. I think I
- 10:41Speaker 3: told you guys the guy who was smoking the van
- 10:42Speaker 3: as we ran around. I loved him.
- 10:45Speaker 2: That's a good story. Yeah.
- 10:46Speaker 3: He's probably long gone. And plus there was a kid
- 10:49Speaker 3: named Chris, uh, And he called him Cecil. You got
- 10:52Speaker 3: it wrong. You got it wrong on the first day.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Cecil.
- 10:57Speaker 3: And the poor kid was called Cecil by the whole
- 10:59Speaker 3: class for the rest of the school year.
- 11:01Speaker 2: That's pretty close.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Oh, that's a permanent nickname. I'll tell you what.
- 11:09Speaker 2: That's a life-changing event right there. The gym teacher called
- 11:12Speaker 2: me Cecil, so here I am half a century later. Yep. Cecil.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Wow.
- 11:18Speaker 1: That's hilarious. You know what? I'm going to try one
- 11:20Speaker 1: more time to Google the guy. Hang on, see if
- 11:22Speaker 1: I can find anything.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Have you done people search? Have you ever done people search,
- 11:25Speaker 2: which we often talk about with incognito?
- 11:28Speaker 5: If it doesn't work, Joe, I tend to be very
- 11:30Speaker 5: good at finding people online.
- 11:32Speaker 1: All right, hang on a second. I've got to concentrate.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Dario Amodi.
- 11:40Speaker 2: What a loser.
- 11:43Speaker 1: What about anything?
- 11:45Speaker 2: Well, I guess that's it.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Cecil.
