- 0:25Speaker 1: I'm Ryan Knight from The Black Dahlu Murder. I play
- 0:28Speaker 1: rhythm man, lead guitar at times, and we have a
- 0:32Speaker 1: new album coming out called Servitude, comes out September twenty
- 0:36Speaker 1: seventh of Metal Blade Records.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yatiful, Ryan, thanks for joining us the Savening.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Yes, yes, thanks for having me my pleasure.
- 0:44Speaker 2: So, as you said, The Black Dahli and Murder wrote,
- 0:46Speaker 2: Murder release your tenth studio album, Servitude on September twenty seventh. Pray, So,
- 0:51Speaker 2: how are you feeling about it?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Good? You know, we've been living with this thing for
- 0:56Speaker 1: almost a year and as the time ticks down, it
- 0:59Speaker 1: feels like eternity or ready for this thing to come out,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and we yeah, we really think everybody's gonna enjoy it.
- 1:07Speaker 2: How do you go with something like that? Mate, Like
- 1:09Speaker 2: it's been finished for about a year, Like you say, so,
- 1:11Speaker 2: you sort of you think about things you could have
- 1:14Speaker 2: done differently or could have changed with it. What do
- 1:16Speaker 2: you put it to bet in that period and just
- 1:17Speaker 2: sort of move on, you know.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Sometimes, Yeah, for sure, I feel like this time, at
- 1:25Speaker 1: least on my end, no, I feel pretty solid about it,
- 1:28Speaker 1: you know. I feel like for me, like every record,
- 1:31Speaker 1: like I never give anything I do a hundred. I know,
- 1:35Speaker 1: I would never score it like it's a score, But
- 1:38Speaker 1: like this one, I'm pretty pretty happy with, pretty happy with.
- 1:42Speaker 1: So yeah, no no regrets for me on this one.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Wait, so can you dive into it a bit more
- 1:46Speaker 2: from a musical point of view for us and then
- 1:48Speaker 2: tell us what you're going forward it?
- 1:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean this is gonna be This is the
- 1:54Speaker 1: first record with Brian, who formerly was the other guitar player.
- 2:00Speaker 1: He's moved over to vocals, so this is huge record
- 2:03Speaker 1: because of that. So first very obvious change. This is
- 2:08Speaker 1: also the first record that me and Brandon ellis the
- 2:11Speaker 1: second guitar player who also plays the lead an rhythm,
- 2:15Speaker 1: first album we've been on together, even though me and
- 2:19Speaker 1: Brandon have known each other, you know, quite quite a
- 2:23Speaker 1: long time now. And let's see and this is the
- 2:28Speaker 1: first record where everyone's gonna hear basically the guys that
- 2:33Speaker 1: have written for Black Dollar Murder, so me or Brian,
- 2:37Speaker 1: myself and Brandon is the first record where you hear
- 2:40Speaker 1: all of us writing on one record. So it's maybe
- 2:43Speaker 1: you maybe you could say this is the most diverse record.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Three big, kind of big things that make this record,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know kind of like maybe special.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Like today you released his singles Man this Hand and
- 2:58Speaker 2: optim Off might say decided it overall, they're a good
- 3:01Speaker 2: sonic representation. What do you expect?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I think after math we put it out first.
- 3:07Speaker 1: It's just kind of got that sort of classic iconic uh,
- 3:13Speaker 1: whatever you want to say. It's just kind of got
- 3:15Speaker 1: that classic BDM sound, And we kind of wanted Brian
- 3:21Speaker 1: wrote that song, and we kind of just felt like
- 3:23Speaker 1: that was a good first representation of this record, just
- 3:27Speaker 1: because you know, has the classic sound. We wanted to
- 3:30Speaker 1: like kind of reassure people like, hey, we're still you know,
- 3:33Speaker 1: the same band, still gonna sound primarily like this, and
- 3:37Speaker 1: UH felt like that was a good first single to release.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Mamma's Hand is a song I wrote, uh kind of
- 3:46Speaker 1: like during COVID for kind of like a completely different
- 3:50Speaker 1: project from BDM, and Uh, I would probably say it's
- 3:54Speaker 1: definitely one of them our most different songs. Has some
- 3:57Speaker 1: stuff in the band's never done before. When I had
- 4:01Speaker 1: that song demoed out, I shouted to Brian, I was like, hey,
- 4:03Speaker 1: what do you think about this track? It's kind of different,
- 4:05Speaker 1: but you know, and he Brian listened to it and
- 4:08Speaker 1: liked it, so we decided to use it. So and uh, yeah,
- 4:11Speaker 1: they both had really good reaction, so we're very happy
- 4:15Speaker 1: with that.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Wait, so, as you mentioned, this is your tend studio album, right,
- 4:19Speaker 2: So would you say that by now Black Dollian Murders
- 4:22Speaker 2: found your own set sound or are you still experimenting
- 4:24Speaker 2: to a degree?
- 4:26Speaker 1: Mm hmm. I would definitely say yeah, we definitely know
- 4:29Speaker 1: what our sound is at this point for sure. And
- 4:33Speaker 1: I feel like, you know, every time we go to
- 4:35Speaker 1: write a new record, that's we're pretty much all honing
- 4:39Speaker 1: in for the most part on that core sound. But yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 1: it's we're always trying to throw in some new influences
- 4:44Speaker 1: and like some fresh ideas and that at this point,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you know, on album ten, that's kind of the challenge,
- 4:51Speaker 1: you know, to keep our core sound while kind of
- 4:55Speaker 1: uh evolving the band. I guess you would say bit
- 4:57Speaker 1: by bit.
- 5:00Speaker 2: They just sort of touched on this bit before, Brian,
- 5:02Speaker 2: But this is your first album back with the band
- 5:04Speaker 2: since twenty fifteen's album A Bus Malls. It had to
- 5:07Speaker 2: be tough coming back under those circumstances. But how was
- 5:11Speaker 2: how was the whole process of reintegrating with the band
- 5:13Speaker 2: for you.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I gotta say it was. It's been pretty natural. Brian,
- 5:21Speaker 1: Max and Allen I have. I was in a band
- 5:24Speaker 1: with those guys prior for you know, quite some time,
- 5:27Speaker 1: so I've played a lot of shows with them. I've written,
- 5:31Speaker 1: uh quite a few records with them, so I feel
- 5:35Speaker 1: pretty at home with those guys. So, I mean, I
- 5:40Speaker 1: guess probably the hardest part about rejoining was that most
- 5:43Speaker 1: of the parts I play in all the old material,
- 5:45Speaker 1: most of them are Brian's parts now because Brandon plays
- 5:49Speaker 1: all my parts from when I joined the band. So
- 5:53Speaker 1: that was kind of a challenge because as I was
- 5:57Speaker 1: learning all the songs, I'm kind of in my subc
- 6:00Speaker 1: not just remembering my old parts which are not my parts.
- 6:05Speaker 1: But uh, other than that, you know, it's been it's
- 6:07Speaker 1: been pretty uh pretty natural, I guess. Yeah, it feels
- 6:10Speaker 1: just like coming back home.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Yeah, as you mentioned, Brian has made from guitar to
- 6:15Speaker 2: vocals to this album, so I know you kind of
- 6:17Speaker 2: speak for him, but from your point of view might
- 6:19Speaker 2: like how did he handle the transition.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I think he's done really well. I mean, it's Brian's
- 6:25Speaker 1: got like the biggest mountain to climb, you know, over
- 6:28Speaker 1: any of us. I mean, he basically, you know, he's
- 6:32Speaker 1: the front man now, so you know, you're the guy
- 6:34Speaker 1: that's got to like obviously you got to talk to
- 6:37Speaker 1: the crowd or one's eyes are on you. You're kind
- 6:40Speaker 1: of up there, not holding a guitar anymore, so you
- 6:43Speaker 1: kind of kind of figure out something to do, you know, uh,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and then just you know, the the technique of it,
- 6:49Speaker 1: and which I think, you know, I think when people here,
- 6:53Speaker 1: especially this full album, they're gonna be pretty surprised because
- 6:56Speaker 1: I think he did a killer job. But yeah, you know,
- 6:59Speaker 1: it's like a role that he's doing great at. We've
- 7:01Speaker 1: seen a lot of progress with him over the last
- 7:03Speaker 1: couple of years that he's been doing it now, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: I think, you know, it's going to be just like Trevor,
- 7:07Speaker 1: You're gonna see him evolve over time and over, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 1: as we do more albums. So yeah, and.
- 7:13Speaker 2: That has him said, because the vocals are a big
- 7:16Speaker 2: part of any band mate, So is it is it
- 7:18Speaker 2: Dan shaaltered to sound drastically very much having him and
- 7:22Speaker 2: there singing.
- 7:25Speaker 1: So Brian's voices it's different than Trevor's, but it's weird
- 7:30Speaker 1: at times. They're very similar. Like, I mean, I've listened
- 7:34Speaker 1: to this record, this new record, a lot of times
- 7:36Speaker 1: since I've been living with it now for a while,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and there's it's weird, like sometimes I'll have it on
- 7:40Speaker 1: the background, I'll almost for like, for like a split second,
- 7:43Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, yeah, this is Brian, you know. So
- 7:47Speaker 1: there's times where I feel like he sounds very similar
- 7:51Speaker 1: to Trevor more so kind of like on the early
- 7:54Speaker 1: Black Doll albums, but also Brian very much. You know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: he's got his own thing going. He's definitely not trying.
- 8:00Speaker 1: You know, Brian knows he's not Trevor's. He knows, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: he's got he's developing, he's doing his own thing. Uh,
- 8:06Speaker 1: he's very much keeping the lyrics sort of true to
- 8:09Speaker 1: what the band does. You know, the band tells like
- 8:10Speaker 1: a lot of stories like horror, science fiction or fantasy
- 8:14Speaker 1: or you know, all types of different topics. So he's keeping,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you know, the lyrics pretty true to what we do.
- 8:20Speaker 1: But overall, yeah, I mean, he's doing his he's doing
- 8:22Speaker 1: his own thing.
- 8:24Speaker 3: This light.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I've had your first show in Detroit in October of
- 8:27Speaker 2: twenty twenty two, mates, so that must have been a
- 8:29Speaker 2: pretty emotional show for Alias.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that one was definitely I mean, yeah, that's that's
- 8:37Speaker 1: the first time like we kind of all united on
- 8:40Speaker 1: stage without Trevor, and that was like a definitely like
- 8:43Speaker 1: a heavy, heavy night. I will say, you know that
- 8:48Speaker 1: the vibe of the crowd, I mean it was absolutely
- 8:51Speaker 1: packed and sold out that night, and just the vibe
- 8:54Speaker 1: of the crowd was just hard to explain. I feel
- 8:56Speaker 1: like everybody in the building could feel it. You know,
- 8:59Speaker 1: you could tell that everyone was kind of feeling the
- 9:02Speaker 1: loss of Trevor, but at the same time like sort
- 9:04Speaker 1: of like rooting us on as a band, and it
- 9:08Speaker 1: was a bittersweet. I guess you would say that was
- 9:12Speaker 1: also like personally for me, like my ship first show back,
- 9:15Speaker 1: so you know, there's a bit of nervousness going on there.
- 9:17Speaker 1: But but yeah, overall, that was a really good, good
- 9:21Speaker 1: send off and just yeah, great show.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I suppose having a crowd reaction law that too, Like
- 9:26Speaker 2: if anyone had any doubts about continuing a proud reaction law,
- 9:29Speaker 2: that would have just set him set him back straight
- 9:31Speaker 2: away and given you imagice with it.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think like, you know, once we played
- 9:38Speaker 1: that show and then once we did a couple of
- 9:41Speaker 1: tours the following year in twenty twenty three. I feel
- 9:46Speaker 1: like that was sort of like a period, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 1: looking back now of like you know, we could have
- 9:51Speaker 1: you know, we said, yeah, we're going to continue on,
- 9:54Speaker 1: but I mean, like realistic, I think it was very
- 9:56Speaker 1: important for us to play that show and do those
- 9:58Speaker 1: couple of tours because I think I feel like after
- 10:00Speaker 1: all that we were really solid, like, yeah, we can,
- 10:03Speaker 1: we can do this, you know.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Now, Servatue comes out on September the twenty seventh, Mate
- 10:09Speaker 2: say What's black? Dahlia Murder got planned for the rest
- 10:11Speaker 2: of twenty twenty four and beyond.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Yeah, here, in just about a month, we're about to
- 10:16Speaker 1: embark on a US and Canadian tour. It's gonna be Us,
- 10:20Speaker 1: Dying Fetus, Spike, Angel Maker, and Vomit Fourth and it
- 10:25Speaker 1: should be a rager, you know. I feel like there's
- 10:29Speaker 1: there's a lot of there's a lot of different sort
- 10:31Speaker 1: of metal represented there. I mean, you got us, but
- 10:35Speaker 1: then you got like legends like Dying Fetus that've been around.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Then you got like angel Maker and SPIKEE. They're kind
- 10:41Speaker 1: of you know, they're younger bands. Hopefully they're gonna bring
- 10:45Speaker 1: they'll bring in like a younger audience. Maybe they'll even
- 10:48Speaker 1: bring in some people that don't even know who we are.
- 10:50Speaker 1: You know, you're always trying to get new fans and
- 10:52Speaker 1: then vomit. Fourth is really cool. There another like sort
- 10:54Speaker 1: of younger band and you know they kind of throw
- 10:57Speaker 1: it back old school. So there's just like a lot
- 10:59Speaker 1: of differ a lot of different things happening, which hopefully
- 11:03Speaker 1: will draw a vast array of people to the show.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Yes, all right, well thanks very much for your time today, mate.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Serber Tudi is out September twenty seventh. Boys have been
- 11:13Speaker 2: hitting the road, so catch them where you can. Near

- 11:21Speaker 1: having me.
