- 0:05I was barely sixteen when I was involved in a series of babysitting jobs.
- 0:10At that time, the concept of hiring someone to take care of children for
- 0:15a few hours was extremely unusual. In Mexico I began in this almost accidental
- 0:20way, occasionally taking care of my cousins in exchange for a modest payment provided
- 0:26by one of my aunts. One day, that same aunt surprised me by
- 0:31telling me that she had recommended me to a neighbor who lived just a few
- 0:36blocks from her house. I initially assumed that this would be a one-
- 0:41time job, a one- time experience. However, the lady was so
- 0:45impressed with my responsibility that she not only became a recurring customer, but also
- 0:51recommended me to other people. Suddenly I was flooded with requests from parents who
- 0:57longed for my services in l l l s. S. S. L.
- 0:59On time. I enjoyed working as a babysitter. I had always loved
- 1:04the children and, besides, as a teenager without much expense, the money
- 1:10I earned was more than I could have imagined. I could afford to buy
- 1:15things that most of my schoolmates or friends couldn' t even dream of.
- 1:19With having the job. I offered flexible hours that allowed me to do my
- 1:26homework when needed. It was the perfect job for me and I wish it
- 1:32would go on like this. If it wasn' t for that afternoon that
- 1:34a lady changed everything that she' d been working for for just a few
- 1:41weeks. He mentioned that he had talked about me with a friend of his,
- 1:46a woman interested in my services. At first I took the proposal as
- 1:49one more of the usual jobs. However, as I listened to the details,
- 1:55the uniqueness of the situation began to resonate in my mind. The woman
- 2:00in question wanted someone to take care of her daughter for an entire evening and
- 2:05night. He was to arrive at his house at 5 p m and stay
- 2:09until 10 a m the following day. My first doubts arose instantly, as
- 2:15I was not sure that my parents would allow me to spend a whole night
- 2:20at someone' s house completely unknown and almost immediately rejected the offer, although
- 2:27I thought that that would be absolutely all related to that woman who requested my
- 2:31services. Reality proved to be different. Just a week after the unusual proposal,
- 2:38my home phone rang and this time my father responded. He had always
- 2:44been in favour of her working, firmly believing that employment, even at an
- 2:49early age, was healthy to learn the importance of money and how to manage
- 2:54it from a young age. The voice on the other side of the line
- 2:59belonged to a beloved woman who wanted a babysitter. At first, this did
- 3:02not surprise me, as my growing reputation among a circle of ladies generated these
- 3:08kinds of calls I constantly answered naturally, but the surprise came when the woman
- 3:15proposed the same treatment that that lady of the previous week was willing to pay
- 3:201, 500 pesos only for one night. The sum was tempting for a
- 3:2516- year- old teenager. Like me, when the phone was loud,
- 3:30my father listened to the whole conversation and looked at me for approval.
- 3:35He hesitated for a moment to evaluate the offer and review the risks in Mexico.
- 3:39Insecurity and crime were everyday realities, which generated my father' s logical
- 3:46concern. Noting my father' s indecision and feeling that the woman, on
- 3:52the other side of the line, waited for an answer, I told her
- 3:55that I was not entirely sure, that I would talk to my parents and
- 4:00sons would return the call the woman accepted and, after hanging up my father
- 4:05and I shared our doubts and reflections. My father suggested waiting for my mother
- 4:10to arrive from work so that both of us, as a family, would
- 4:15make a more informed decision. The prospect of spending practically a whole day away
- 4:18from home gave me a mixture of emotion and anxiety. The temptation to earn
- 4:24such a considerable sum was enormous, especially because I already had in mind the
- 4:29desire to buy something I had always wanted, a phone. At that time
- 4:34it was not common for people to have cell phones, but the idea of
- 4:40owning one excited me enormously. While waiting for my mother, I began to
- 4:46come up with convincing arguments that could persuade my parents to allow me to accept
- 4:50the job. I thought about highlighting the responsibility I had shown in previous jobs,
- 4:57the unique opportunity to make so much money in one night and my desire
- 5:01to acquire something that would improve my daily life. Although I knew that security
- 5:05was a legitimate concern, I was determined to convince my parents that this opportunity
- 5:11was worth it. As soon as my mother arrived, we shared the news
- 5:16of the offer with her, as expected. His initial answer was a resounding
- 5:21no. However, I did not give up and began to tell him my
- 5:26arguments. I assured him that he would be very responsible and that he would
- 5:31ask for the woman' s telephone number to be in touch in the event
- 5:34of any eventuality. My father also joined the persuasion, claiming that the woman
- 5:40sounded quite normal and friendly on the phone. In addition, he proposed an
- 5:46additional measure to ensure that everything was all right. He offered to take me
- 5:50to the woman' s house, meet her personally, and verify that everything
- 5:56was in order. Although my mother was still not fully convinced, two people
- 6:00continually pitching arguments, finally made her give in. He agreed on the condition
- 6:06that my father take these additional precautions to ensure my safety. Almost without wasting
- 6:13time, I ran to the phone and told the woman who accepted the job.
- 6:17The lady seemed genuinely happy and grateful that she was willing to take care
- 6:23of her daughter for a whole day. He explained on the phone that he
- 6:28had to go out during that day and had no one to leave his daughter
- 6:31with. I thanked him for his confidence and assured him that he would be
- 6:36there on the agreed day. When the day came, my father, fulfilling
- 6:41his promise, took me to the woman' s house. The residence was
- 6:45considerably large, showing an affluent economic level. Upon entering, the woman proved
- 6:50to be as kind as she had been on the phone, thanking again that
- 6:57she agreed to take care of her daughter. He explained to my father that
- 7:00he had tried to find a nanny without success, which made us suspect that
- 7:04she was probably from the United States. Although this detail was curious to us,
- 7:11we did not give it much importance. After a brief talk, my
- 7:15father retired leaving me alone with the woman and as soon as he left,
- 7:19the lady suggested that he might meet Frida. He' s not a real
- 7:24man out of respect for the family I nodded and she took me to the
- 7:29girl' s room on the top floor on the way. The woman explained
- 7:32to me that Frida had a very active imagination and had recently developed a phase
- 7:40in which she had an imaginary friend. He kindly warned me that Frida liked
- 7:44to have this invisible child treated as if it were real. Not anymore.
- 7:49I was surprised that the children could be a little bit strange, as after
- 7:54taking care of many of them, I knew that very often they were immersed
- 7:58in their fertile imagination and in others the best thing was simply to play whatever
- 8:03they wanted, since eventually they themselves forgot the reality. However, when he
- 8:09responded to the woman who was fine and who would try to play the game
- 8:13with his daughter to boost his imagination. I couldn' t help but feel
- 8:18some restlessness. As I crossed the door of Frida' s room, I
- 8:22had realized that Frida was not a four- or five- year- old
- 8:26girl, as I had initially assumed my experience. Taking care of children he
- 8:31told me that the only ones who had imaginary friends were children four or five
- 8:35years maximum six. However, at that time, seeing Frida, I realized
- 8:39that the girl was about ten years old. It was a little strange that
- 8:46at that age he still clung to childish fantasies. I decided not to question
- 8:52anything, remembering that I didn' t have to judge the parenting choices of
- 8:56others, and I just introduced myself to Frida who would be her nanny.
- 9:01As long as his mom wasn' t home and we could play and watch
- 9:05movies to pass the time. The girl, with a smile that seemed quite
- 9:09normal, responded to the greeting and assured me that she had many games with
- 9:13which we could have fun. Apparently, everything was going well. The mother
- 9:20satisfied to see that we got along well, announced that it was time to
- 9:24leave and after picking up a small suitcase she left at first. Everything was
- 9:30going on in a normal way. We spent about two hours talking and playing
- 9:35a board game. After that I proposed to watch a movie while we were
- 9:39eating popcorn. Frida excitedly accepted and went to the room to choose the album.
- 9:46While I was waiting for popcorn to cook in the microwave, something unusual.
- 9:52It started to happen. I began to hear a few steps that seemed
- 9:56to be heading towards the kitchen, where I was. At first I didn
- 10:01' t give it much importance, thinking that the girl had already chosen the
- 10:05film and came to the kitchen to be with me. In addition, I
- 10:09heard laughter from outside the kitchen, which confirmed my assumption. I smiled thinking
- 10:16that Frida was trying to hide to scare me, as small children usually do.
- 10:22Thinking that the previous situation had been a simple game of the small frid,
- 10:28I decided to follow the current. He understood perfectly that children loved to
- 10:33scare others and this game was common and full of excitement for them. So,
- 10:37when the microwave went out, I pulled out the popcorn bags and headed
- 10:43to the kitchen door to go to the living room. At that time,
- 10:48she still saw the shadow of her gaze at the side of the door frame
- 10:52and also sensed laughter that gave away her location. I was ready to take
- 10:56a few steps and pretend surprise when the girl jumped to scare me. However,
- 11:01when crossing the door frame, not only did no one jump to scare
- 11:05me, but there was absolutely no one. There a chill swept through my
- 11:11body before the disconcerting reality. I couldn' t believe there wasn' t
- 11:16anyone. Having seen shadows and heard laughter, even if Frida had repented and
- 11:22ran away, she was so close that she would have listened to his footsteps,
- 11:28but there was no one. I decided not to cause scandal and to
- 11:33think maybe it was the shadow of something else. I tried to convince myself
- 11:37that the laughs were the echo of Frida' s, who was in the
- 11:41room putting on the DVD didn' t want to dig any further. If
- 11:43I went into the room to watch the movie with little Frida I had chosen
- 11:48a Barbie movie, something I personally didn' t like much. I didn
- 11:54' t pay much attention to it and my mind went back to what I
- 11:58had just experienced Every logical explanation I was trying to find only made me realize
- 12:05that there was no rational reason for what happened. At some point in the
- 12:09film, the popcorn ran out and Frida asked me if I could do more.
- 12:16I got up and went to the kitchen to prepare another bag, but
- 12:20this time I felt much more nervous about what happened earlier. He constantly turned
- 12:26to the door looking for the shadow, but no matter how much he did,
- 12:31he could see absolutely nothing. The restlessness gripped me as the silence of
- 12:35the house mingled with the attention I felt in the environment. As I walked
- 12:41back to the room with Frida, I noticed something was out of the ordinary.
- 12:46It seemed like Frida was talking to someone I initially thought maybe she was
- 12:52chatting with her imaginary friend, so I didn' t give her too much
- 12:56importance and kept moving forward. However, as I approached, the conversation became
- 13:01clearer and, to my surprise, I could hear Frida' s words clearly.
- 13:09She was telling someone not to scare me again as she liked me and
- 13:13didn' t want me to go like the other people who had taken care
- 13:16of her. This struck me considering I was still a little stunned by what
- 13:20had happened to me a few hours ago. But what was really chilling was
- 13:28when I heard clearly the voice of a second child who responded to Frida,
- 13:31who was fun to scare me and who enjoyed seeing my reaction. When I
- 13:37came out of the kitchen and he disappeared. When I arrived in the living
- 13:41room, I asked Frida who I was talking to, but I quickly realized
- 13:46that I was completely alone. I looked in every direction for that child who
- 13:50had been talking, but I saw absolutely nothing desperate to get answers. I
- 13:58asked Frida again who she was talking to. Frida shrugged her shoulders a little
- 14:03and told me she was talking to Miguel. Intrigued I asked him who Miguel
- 14:09was, and Frida replied that Miguel was his friend who lived in that house
- 14:13before they arrived. According to Frida, Miguel didn' t like strangers very
- 14:18much, but he could be her friend if he wanted to. Although this
- 14:22was strange, I recalled his mother' s instructions to follow the Afrid current
- 14:28in everything related to his imaginary friend. I tried to fake a smile and
- 14:33told him that, of course, I would love to be friends with Miguel
- 14:37so he wouldn' t like me anymore. Almost immediately, Frida looked in
- 14:41the direction of an empty armchair in the living room and then looked at me.
- 14:45He told me that Miguel was not entirely convinced that I wanted to be
- 14:48his friend, but I assured him that I was willing and that Miguel had
- 14:52nothing to fear. Frida looked back at the couch and then at me,
- 14:56telling me that if you wanted to be friends with Miguel, he wanted to
- 15:01play hide- and- seek. I agreed to play hide and seek with
- 15:05them, thinking that perhaps it had been Frida who imitated another voice and that
- 15:11the suggestion and attention of the moment made me listen to the voice as something
- 15:16completely different. It should be noted that by that time it was already night,
- 15:20although the house was perfectly illuminated by its own light, the disturbing atmosphere
- 15:26of the house seemed to intensify, but I decided to go ahead with the
- 15:33game to discover more about this mysterious imaginary friend named Miguel Frida proposed that I
- 15:39be the one to tell. I told him I was fine and I'
- 15:41d count up to a hundred so they could both hide. The proposal excited
- 15:45Frida, who ran out of the room in search of a suitable place to
- 15:48hide, while I continued to count without too much concern. Coming close to
- 15:54number ninety- five, something completely unusual happened. All the lights in the
- 16:02house went out all of a sudden. This sudden disconcerting blackout did not affect
- 16:07only the light of the room in which I was in a matter of seconds.
- 16:11The whole house was plunged into total darkness. I looked out the window
- 16:17and quickly noticed that the other houses on the block still had light, ruling
- 16:22out the possibility of a general blackout. The hypothesis that Frida was behind this
- 16:27darkness began to appear unlikely. The fuse box switch was located at an unreachable
- 16:34height for a girl of her stature. Just as I was about to call
- 16:41Frida to inform her of the strange situation, I heard her voice, telling
- 16:45me that Miguel liked to play in the dark. I started walking around the
- 16:51house trying to find Frida. However, because it was not my home,
- 16:55I stumbled upon furniture and objects in the constant shadow, as there really was
- 17:00absolutely nothing. The temperature in the house also began to drop, creating an
- 17:07even more disconcerting atmosphere. Despite the darkness and unusual cold. I continued to
- 17:15advance, guided by the occasional steps or laughter that indicated Frida' s presence.
- 17:19After a considerable time of wandering around the house in circles without finding it,
- 17:25despair began to grip me. However, I tried to stay calm,
- 17:30remembering that I kept doing my work with a serene voice. I proposed to
- 17:37change the rules of the game a little bit to balance the situation. I
- 17:40asked Frida to make a noise whenever I requested it to facilitate my orientation in
- 17:44the dark. There was no immediate response, but after a while I heard
- 17:52a clear applause coming under the stairs. Intrigued, I headed that way and
- 17:57asked again for another noise. This time I heard a trampoline confirming that something
- 18:03was happening in the sort of cellar that was under the stairs. With a
- 18:08sense of relief and some assurance of having located Frida, I tempted the door
- 18:14to open it. That door was a single handle and as it pulled down
- 18:18it opened without resistance. However, as I tried to pull it, I
- 18:25felt someone shut it down from the inside. At first I thought Frida was
- 18:29behind the prank, prolonging the game with a laugh, I told her that
- 18:34I had already found it and that I couldn' t stop it from ending
- 18:38like this. I tried to open the door again, but at that moment
- 18:44something surprising happened. Who believed in that moment that it was Frida pulled the
- 18:48handle again, but this time with so much force that he tore the handle,
- 18:52causing me to fall from a centon and the door to open. I
- 18:56asked immediately to fry if it was okay, but as I watched carefully,
- 19:00I was horrified to realize that what was in the cellar was not fried.
- 19:04His eyes shone in the dark with an intense red color and a demonic presence.
- 19:11You could feel a scream in the environment. He escaped from my lips
- 19:15and I receded terrified. At that very moment, the lights of the house
- 19:19were turned on again, revealing that the space under the stairs was empty frigid.
- 19:26He looked at his head from above laughing and declaring that he had been
- 19:30hiding under his mother' s bed all along and had won the terrified game.
- 19:36I called my father to tell him what happened. At first he tried
- 19:40to dismiss the situation, suggesting that perhaps I had been confused or frightened in
- 19:45the dark. However, I was extremely terrified and insisted that I could not
- 19:49stay in that house for the rest of the night. After begging for a
- 19:55considerable time, my mother decided to go to keep me company and take care
- 20:00of both of us for the rest of the night. The next day,
- 20:03before Frida' s mother returned, my mother left I never really knew what
- 20:07happened in that house and after receiving my payment, I left there and although
- 20:12the woman called me a few weeks later to propose to take care of Frida
- 20:17for a few hours, I turned down the offer and never set foot in
- 20:21that house again. Story written and adapted by Lisa Hernández
