Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome back to the takeout.
- 0:03Speaker 2: The man, once married to longtime Trump advisor Kelly and
- 0:06Speaker 2: Conway has launched a congressional campaign in New York's twelfth
- 0:09Speaker 2: district as a Democrat. Here are some of George Conway's pitch.
- 0:14Speaker 3: We have a corrupt president, a mendacious president, a criminal
- 0:18Speaker 3: president whose masked agents are disappearing people from our streets,
- 0:22Speaker 3: who's breaking international law, and he's running our federal government
- 0:26Speaker 3: like a mob protection racket.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We'll bring in our political panel. We're going to have
- 0:31Speaker 2: two segments with our political panel today. So isn't that exciting?
- 0:34Speaker 2: Republican strategist Lance Trover worked on Doug Bergham's presidential campaign
- 0:38Speaker 2: and John McCarthy served as a senior advisor in the
- 0:40Speaker 2: Biden White House. So George Conway the tenth Democrat entering
- 0:44Speaker 2: the primaries, and we've had several on this program, and
- 0:48Speaker 2: I'm sure we're going to all ten on this program,
- 0:49Speaker 2: but we'll try to get Conway on to see what
- 0:51Speaker 2: you think, Lance, what do you think of this?
- 0:53Speaker 4: Got's me, George, go for it?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Man.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Hey, Look but what I read today in the New
- 0:57Speaker 4: York Times is that he won't bend then Ian Momdannie,
- 1:00Speaker 4: he doesn't want to cater to the socialist wing of
- 1:02Speaker 4: the Democratic Party, and he claims to be pro Israel. Well,
- 1:04Speaker 4: I don't know if he's checked in with the proclivities
- 1:06Speaker 4: of the Democratic Party lately, particularly in New York City,
- 1:08Speaker 4: but those are things that you kind of got to
- 1:10Speaker 4: do if you want to win in New York these days.
- 1:12Speaker 1: So again, god speed, go for it.
- 1:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think that this says probably more
- 1:16Speaker 5: about the Republican Party's kind of realignment in the last
- 1:19Speaker 5: few years. I mean, George Conway is a lifelong Conservative,
- 1:22Speaker 5: you know, as someone who in the first Trump administration,
- 1:24Speaker 5: you know, as an outside critic, and is now running
- 1:26Speaker 5: as a Democrat in a congressional primary.
- 1:28Speaker 1: So I mean I think Democrats have an opportunity long shot. Yeah, Yeah,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I wouldn't say that.
- 1:32Speaker 5: I mean, it's a crowded primary, you know, it's anybody
- 1:35Speaker 5: you know, Yeah, and I mean maybe ninety seven inches.
- 1:37Speaker 5: He'll have his name ID and the ability to probably
- 1:39Speaker 5: turn out new voters. That's something that a lot of
- 1:41Speaker 5: those other people won't have.
- 1:43Speaker 4: And he'll be able to raise money too. I'm confident
- 1:45Speaker 4: in that he seems to be able to do that
- 1:46Speaker 4: so again, I you know he could win.
- 1:48Speaker 1: For sure, you think so well in a crowded primary.
- 1:52Speaker 1: To John's point, yes, he's also got a huge name recognition.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Absolutely, say anything's possible. But if he's not going to
- 1:57Speaker 4: cater to the far left of the party, I have
- 1:59Speaker 4: a heart time believing that's the problem he's going to have,
- 2:01Speaker 4: is if he won't cater to the socialist and the
- 2:03Speaker 4: mom Donnie wing of the party in New York City.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I think that's going to be a strug prunt.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean those districts are small and tight,
- 2:09Speaker 5: and I mean local politics still matters. I mean you
- 2:11Speaker 5: have very serious local candidates there who could really break
- 2:13Speaker 5: through too.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Now, John, you're in the Biden White House.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Obviously there was a lot of thought given off and
- 2:18Speaker 2: on to Nicholas Maduro in Venezuela. Are Democrats having a
- 2:21Speaker 2: hard time messaging what's gone on, what they think the
- 2:24Speaker 2: Trump administration has said in motion in Venezuela.
- 2:27Speaker 5: I don't know that it's a tough issue for Democrats
- 2:29Speaker 5: when it comes to messaging. I think they can kind
- 2:31Speaker 5: of sit back and let this play out because I
- 2:32Speaker 5: think the Republican Party and President Trump don't have a
- 2:34Speaker 5: plan for themselves. I mean, each administration official seems to
- 2:37Speaker 5: seem like there is another conversation that happened that the
- 2:39Speaker 5: President was or was not a part of. There's no
- 2:41Speaker 5: clear coherent message. Democrats, I think just need to let
- 2:44Speaker 5: the administration play this one out.
- 2:46Speaker 2: But the White House is portraying Democrats as calling this illegal,
- 2:49Speaker 2: as basically siding with.
- 2:51Speaker 1: A narco terrorist. Is that a messaging problem?
- 2:53Speaker 5: Well, I mean I think that one thing that both
- 2:55Speaker 5: parties should be able to agree on is that this
- 2:57Speaker 5: was an incredible military operation. I mean, it is testament
- 3:00Speaker 5: to the US military. I mean that's a safe place
- 3:02Speaker 5: for both parties to be able to talk about.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But I mean the flimsiness of Cuban intelligence and Russian
- 3:08Speaker 2: aerial defense systems and the like.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah, lots of things were a learned.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Yeah, But I mean Donald Trump has basically brought the
- 3:13Speaker 5: same volatility that he has to the economy now to
- 3:15Speaker 5: foreign affairs. So, I mean, at every single day it
- 3:17Speaker 5: seems like there's some new direction of US foreign policy.
- 3:19Speaker 4: I think the problem the Democrats have is I don't
- 3:21Speaker 4: think every average America, every day average Americans, when it
- 3:24Speaker 4: comes to foreign policies get caught up in these academic
- 3:27Speaker 4: discussions about wellie, what.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Do they get caught up in?
- 3:29Speaker 4: They see decisive action and going to take out a
- 3:31Speaker 4: narco terrorists and hold him accountable.
- 3:34Speaker 1: That is what that does.
- 3:35Speaker 2: The MAGA movement agree or disagree with Marjorie Taylor Green
- 3:37Speaker 2: who says this is Marjorie Taylor Green who says this
- 3:41Speaker 2: is regime change and not part of what America First
- 3:43Speaker 2: is all about.
- 3:44Speaker 4: The last polion I've seen about the from the President,
- 3:46Speaker 4: both internally and externally, has a ninety percent approal random
- 3:49Speaker 4: on Republicans that on the change overall. I mean, the
- 3:53Speaker 4: Republican Party is with the president if you're not aligned
- 3:55Speaker 4: with his priorities and you're becoming a roadblock to his priorities.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Well again, I say who, because she's going to be
- 3:59Speaker 4: not a member of Congress after today.
- 4:01Speaker 5: The Republican Party is with the president because they have
- 4:03Speaker 5: to be, and they're afraid for their own seats. I mean,
- 4:04Speaker 5: Republicans they just agree with the decisions, and Congress have
- 4:07Speaker 5: given up their responsibility as a coequal branch of government.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Behind closed doors, Republicans and Congress would tell you a
- 4:12Speaker 5: totally different story they have some of these same concerns
- 4:14Speaker 5: about congressional oversight and the fact that the administration is
- 4:17Speaker 5: overreaching very.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Quickly before we go to break, and it's a commercial break,
- 4:21Speaker 2: but it will also probably be a candy break just
- 4:23Speaker 2: for your edification Greenland. The President seems intensely interested in
- 4:29Speaker 2: the future of Greenland, even not ruling out military action
- 4:32Speaker 2: to take it.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Well, historically, I mean this goes back to the Truman administration,
- 4:35Speaker 4: and our interest in Greenland dates back decades. I mean,
- 4:38Speaker 4: so this is not new for the president of the
- 4:40Speaker 4: United States. And look, I think it's an important it's
- 4:42Speaker 4: an important country.
- 4:43Speaker 1: What is new is the idea that military action to
- 4:45Speaker 1: take well.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Look, I mean he's he's certainly talking tough right now,
- 4:48Speaker 4: but I think he's saying to the folks in Denmark, like, look,
- 4:51Speaker 4: we need to work together to get something done this week.
- 4:52Speaker 1: In the House.
- 4:53Speaker 2: If the schedule keeps, they'll be put on the discharged
- 4:56Speaker 2: petition on a three year extension of expiring Obamacare extended
- 5:01Speaker 2: tax credits.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Evaluate that for me, John, I.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Mean, I think Republicans need to answer for this. I mean,
- 5:06Speaker 5: they were the ones.
- 5:07Speaker 1: It's going to pass the House.
- 5:08Speaker 5: They were the ones who allowed us to get to
- 5:09Speaker 5: this point in the first place.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And you know, if you.
- 5:11Speaker 5: Step back even kind of a second, we went to
- 5:13Speaker 5: the holidays and went over that cliff because Republicans didn't
- 5:15Speaker 5: take action on it.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Right, because premiums are due to increase as.
- 5:19Speaker 4: A result of these inspired how did we get to
- 5:21Speaker 4: this place. The Democrats passed the subsidies and set the expiration.
- 5:26Speaker 4: That's how we got to this place. It's not because
- 5:29Speaker 4: of republic but lance.
- 5:30Speaker 1: You know the Republican strategy on tax cuts.
- 5:32Speaker 2: You passed a tax cut with an expiration, guy, and
- 5:34Speaker 2: if Democrats don't vote to extend it, they're voting for
- 5:36Speaker 2: a tax increase.
- 5:37Speaker 1: It goes both ways, you know that. And I got
- 5:39Speaker 1: to fifteen years come up with an alternative.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Look, I'm very very open about this. I think Republicans need.
- 5:45Speaker 1: It's going to pass the House.
- 5:46Speaker 2: It's going to force some sort of resolution in the Senate,
- 5:48Speaker 2: don't you believe? And yes I do, And the White
- 5:50Speaker 2: House is going to have to get engaged eventually, agreed.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Look, I've been very public about this time and again.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I think this is an issue Republicans need to deal with.
- 5:57Speaker 4: I think it's unfortunate that we are in the situation
- 5:59Speaker 4: because the Democrats put us here and these are just
- 6:01Speaker 4: flat out giveaways to insurance companies. But politically, if you're
- 6:04Speaker 4: asking me as a political operative, I think this is
- 6:06Speaker 4: something Republicans need to take seriously and deal with.
- 6:08Speaker 5: John are going to get the last word, well, I
- 6:09Speaker 5: would say I think that Republicans should take this seriously
- 6:11Speaker 5: because right now, overwhelming the poll show that they're not
- 6:13Speaker 5: trusted on the economy, which has historically been the place
- 6:16Speaker 5: that Republicans have always done their best. So that's going
- 6:18Speaker 5: to be a real problem for them when they have
- 6:20Speaker 5: very directly.
- 6:20Speaker 2: John, Democrats are going to have to back off three
- 6:22Speaker 2: years exactly as they are, but they'll accept something less
- 6:24Speaker 2: than that.
- 6:25Speaker 5: I think that leadership is indicated that they'd be open
- 6:28Speaker 5: negotiating in good faith since the very beginning.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And Republicans are going to have to come around on that.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I think the next week or two, if not sooner,
- 6:35Speaker 2: Lance Trover, John McCarthy, it's been a pleasure.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Two segments.
- 6:39Speaker 2: We'll getting more Kennedy than excellent one segment ones
