- 0:00She broke 4 ribs and still said she'd crawl to the ballpark if
- 0:04that's what it took. There's a story behind that.
- 0:09This is your daily message from Chad #1169 to upgrade your
- 0:13mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:16Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:18yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:20Mabel Blair. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:24You think when something you built comes to an end, it's gone
- 0:26for good. But upgraded thinking knows some
- 0:28things you plant don't die. They just wait.
- 0:32Here's the story. In 1948, a young woman named
- 0:36Maybelle Blair pitch for the Peoria Red Wings.
- 0:39She played in the All American Girls Professional Baseball
- 0:41League, the one you know from the movie A League of Their Own.
- 0:45She was the inspiration for the character all the way May.
- 0:48Then in 1954, the league folded. The lights went out.
- 0:52Women's professional baseball in America was over.
- 0:55For most people, that was the end of the story.
- 0:58Mabel went on and lived her life. 72 years passed and on
- 1:03August 1st of this year, at 99 years old, Mabel Blair was
- 1:06wheeled onto a field in Springfield, IL to throw out the
- 1:09first pitch of a brand new league, the Women's Professional
- 1:12Baseball League. The first of its kind since her
- 1:15league died before some of your grandparents were born.
- 1:18She'd broken 4 ribs just weeks before 99 years old.
- 1:22Four broken ribs. And here's what she told the
- 1:24news crew. Nothing was going to stop me
- 1:27from being here, even if I had to crawl.
- 1:30She watched women play the game she loved, a game everyone said
- 1:34was finished. She called it the happiest day
- 1:36of her life. Now think about the math on
- 1:39that. The thing Mabel helped start
- 1:41with? Dark for 72 years, longer than
- 1:44most people are alive. If you told her in 1954 that the
- 1:48seed was still good, that it would bloom again while she was
- 1:51still breathing to see it, she'd have every reason not to believe
- 1:53you. But it did.
- 1:56The better story to tell yourself is what I plant today
- 1:59may bloom long after I've stopped watching for it.
- 2:03Here's what I want you to take from that.
- 2:06You're going to build things that end, programs that close,
- 2:09efforts that stall, dreams that get shelved, and you'll be
- 2:12tempted to call them dead. They may not be dead.
- 2:16They may just be planted, waiting to bloom again.
- 2:21You don't always get to see the harvest.
- 2:22Mabel almost didn't. But the good you put into the
- 2:25world doesn't get an expiration date just because you stopped
- 2:28seeing results. Some seeds bloom on a 72 year
- 2:32delay, so don't count it out. Keep planting anyway.
- 2:36You can learn more about the WPBL at Women's

- 2:48Send someone a text and ask them what's something that came back
- 2:51around you never thought you'd see again.
