- 0:28Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:32Service, and Love.
- 0:34Today, I want to ask, when might God
- 0:37be calling you to do something unstrategic?
- 0:41And I'm going to unfold what I mean
- 0:42by that in a little bit, but first,
- 0:44let's start with being strategic.
- 0:45Has there ever been a time in your
- 0:46life when you've made a strategic decision that
- 0:50really paid off later?
- 0:52Just a little bit of long-term thinking
- 0:53where you thought, oh, if this might be
- 0:55true in the future, maybe I should do
- 0:56this now, and you did it and it
- 0:58set you up for success.
- 1:00For me, I think about my parents.
- 1:02When I was in first grade, they wanted
- 1:04to buy a new home, a bigger one,
- 1:06which they could afford to do, and they
- 1:08were looking at where they could buy it.
- 1:10And even though I was in first grade
- 1:12and my brother was in fifth grade, they
- 1:14decided to buy a home that would be
- 1:15closer to the high school we were going
- 1:17to go to, because since my brother and
- 1:19I were four years apart, we would end
- 1:22up spending a total length of eight years
- 1:24at that high school.
- 1:25And so even though it would mean going
- 1:27a further drive to our middle school and
- 1:29elementary school, it was a shorter drive for
- 1:32high school once we finally were attending that
- 1:34high school.
- 1:34And it worked out just the way my
- 1:36parents planned, and it was very convenient to
- 1:38be close to high school for them and
- 1:39for us during those stretch of years.
- 1:42I think about Virginia Tech, the university.
- 1:46Virginia Tech, all of my metaphors today seem
- 1:48to have to do with property purchases.
- 1:49They have a specific type of stone that
- 1:52they use for their buildings on campus going
- 1:54back to earlier centuries, even.
- 1:57It's a kind of limestone, which has gotten
- 1:59the nickname Hokie Stone.
- 2:02And in 1975, the foundation of the university
- 2:07bought the quarry that this stone comes from.
- 2:10So it comes from a specific quarry near
- 2:13Blacksburg, Virginia.
- 2:15And they decided, you know what, if we're
- 2:18going to keep using this, we ought to
- 2:19own the quarry.
- 2:20So they bought that.
- 2:21And in the half century since then, they've
- 2:24been able to keep building buildings that use
- 2:26that same stone, that same exact matching kind
- 2:30of edifice as previous buildings from previous centuries.
- 2:34Good strategic call on the part of Virginia
- 2:37Tech and their leadership team.
- 2:39I personally am really drawn to stories like
- 2:42these because I love the idea of being
- 2:44smart enough to figure something out in advance
- 2:47and make a decision and execute on it
- 2:50and have it pay off later and prove
- 2:52how smart you were.
- 2:53I love that.
- 2:54I love that sense of payoff of it
- 2:56working out of long-term thinking.
- 2:58It's just so satisfying when it works, right?
- 3:02And yet, often when we're walking in obedience
- 3:06to Jesus Christ, he might call us to
- 3:09do something that looks rather unstrategic.
- 3:13So I want to look at a couple
- 3:14different passages, one from the teachings of Jesus
- 3:16himself and one from the book of Judges
- 3:19about Gideon, one of the judges, to kind
- 3:22of look at this idea of being unstrategic.
- 3:24So first, from the teaching of Jesus himself,
- 3:27we have the parable of the treasure hidden
- 3:29in a field.
- 3:30This is Matthew 13, 44.
- 3:33Jesus said, the kingdom of heaven is like
- 3:34treasure hidden in a field.
- 3:36When a man found it, he hid it
- 3:37again.
- 3:38And then in his joy, he went and
- 3:40sold all he had and bought that field.
- 3:45Again, we're still on the theme of like
- 3:46property acquisition somehow here, but what is Jesus
- 3:49getting at?
- 3:50He's saying, if you had to sell everything
- 3:54you owned, if you had to liquidate all
- 3:57of your assets, what would make it worth
- 3:59it to do that?
- 4:01Well, if you knew that you could acquire
- 4:03something even more valuable, it would be worth
- 4:06it to do that.
- 4:07If you find a field, you find a
- 4:09treasure hidden in that field that nobody knows
- 4:10about, and you realize, I can buy the
- 4:12field for way less than that treasure is
- 4:14worth.
- 4:14It's totally worth liquidating your assets to get
- 4:16that field, because you're going to get such
- 4:17a strong return on your investment.
- 4:21Jesus is kind of being a strategic advisor
- 4:23here.
- 4:23He's saying, if you can buy low and
- 4:26sell high, you should do that.
- 4:28If you can buy something while it's on
- 4:29the cheap, go for it.
- 4:31But what is it that's available on the
- 4:33cheap, so to speak?
- 4:34What can we purchase now that's going to
- 4:37pay off for eternity?
- 4:39And Jesus says, it's the kingdom of heaven.
- 4:41It's when we choose to sell things that
- 4:43don't matter in order to acquire the kingdom
- 4:45of heaven that does matter.
- 4:48And that selling things that don't matter can
- 4:51look unstrategic because of the way that the
- 4:55kingdom of heaven is hidden.
- 4:57Right?
- 4:58Like, suppose somebody else looks at that field
- 4:59and they're like, I'm pretty sure you just
- 5:00bought a field.
- 5:01I don't...
- 5:02I don't think there's a treasure in that
- 5:03field.
- 5:04It's a field, man.
- 5:05You're just imagining the treasure.
- 5:06Like, if the kingdom of heaven is not
- 5:08real, if the promises of God are not
- 5:09true, then making these trade-offs, making these
- 5:12sacrifices so that we can prioritize the kingdom
- 5:14of God over things that matter less, it
- 5:16doesn't make any sense.
- 5:17It only works if the good news is
- 5:19ultimately true.
- 5:22Okay.
- 5:22Now, let's go to the story of Gideon
- 5:24in the Old Testament.
- 5:26So Gideon is in the era of the
- 5:27judges.
- 5:28So these were like military leaders that were
- 5:29raised up from generation to generation within Israel
- 5:33to deliver them from their enemies.
- 5:34It was not yet a dynastic kingdom with
- 5:37succession of kings and a lineal family line.
- 5:40And one of these judges who was raised
- 5:42up by God is named Gideon.
- 5:44And the particular oppressor of Israel in this
- 5:46era was Midian, a neighboring nation that was
- 5:49more powerful than Israel at the time.
- 5:51And so Gideon, kind of in response to
- 5:53God's call, he's gathering a bunch of Israelites
- 5:54together to go and fight off Midian to
- 5:57liberate the Israelites.
- 5:58And so this is starting in verse one
- 6:00of chapter seven.
- 6:24So 22,000 men left while 10,000
- 6:27remained.
- 6:29But the Lord said to Gideon, there are
- 6:31still too many men.
- 6:32Take them down to the water and I
- 6:33will send them out there for you.
- 6:35If I say this one shall go with
- 6:36you, he shall go.
- 6:37But if I say this one shall not
- 6:38go with you, he shall not go.
- 6:40So Gideon took them in down to the
- 6:41water.
- 6:42There the Lord told him, separate those who
- 6:44lap the water with their tongues as a
- 6:46dog laps from those who kneel down to
- 6:48drink.
- 6:49300 of them drink from cupped hands, lapping
- 6:51like dogs.
- 6:52All the rest got down on their knees
- 6:53to drink.
- 6:54The Lord said to Gideon, with the 300
- 6:56men that lapped, I will save you and
- 6:59give the Midianites into your hands.
- 7:01Let all the others go home.
- 7:03So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites
- 7:05home, but kept the 300 who took over
- 7:07the provisions and the trumpets of the others.
- 7:12Okay, what is going on here?
- 7:14Gideon starts with a group of 32,000
- 7:16people.
- 7:16And what does the Lord say?
- 7:18Does the Lord say, hey, good job, good
- 7:20strategy, gathering an army?
- 7:21No, he says, you have too many men.
- 7:24I can't get this job done with that
- 7:26many men.
- 7:26Why?
- 7:27Or Israel would boast against me, my own
- 7:29strength has saved me.
- 7:30God's concern here is not just winning the
- 7:34battle, but also the kind of spiritual result
- 7:36of winning the battle.
- 7:37God's saying, hey, if you win the battle
- 7:39with this many soldiers, you might end up
- 7:41taking all the credit for it yourself and
- 7:43not realize that it was my spirit that
- 7:45was empowering you and my care for you
- 7:47that was really carrying the day.
- 7:49And so God says, you know, let the
- 7:50people who are afraid go home.
- 7:52Now if you've got a force of 32
- 7:54,000 people and you say, look, anybody who's
- 7:56really afraid can go home and 22,000
- 7:59of them leave.
- 8:00How do you think the remaining 10,000
- 8:02feel?
- 8:03This is more than two thirds of the
- 8:04force that clearly were like, I don't think
- 8:06we've really got a fighting chance here.
- 8:08Like if they thought that already, how much
- 8:10worse is the situation now with only 10
- 8:12,000 left?
- 8:13But then is God like, oh, nevermind, we
- 8:14should bring some people back.
- 8:15No, God gets even more unstrategic.
- 8:17God's telling Gideon, you know, even less, even
- 8:19less.
- 8:20He does this funny thing with dividing them
- 8:21up based on how they drink water and
- 8:23it gets down to only 300 because this
- 8:25is God's intention is, is he wants to
- 8:27carry the day by his power so that
- 8:31the spiritual result of the deliverance is beautiful
- 8:33and matches the physical result of the deliverance.
- 8:38Okay.
- 8:38So what happens?
- 8:39This is picking up in verse 16, dividing
- 8:41the 300 men into three companies, Gideon placed
- 8:44trumpets and empty jars in the hands of
- 8:45all of them with torches inside.
- 8:47Watch me.
- 8:48He told them, follow my lead.
- 8:50When I get to the edge of the
- 8:51camp, do exactly as I do.
- 8:53When I and all who are with me,
- 8:55blow our trumpets, then from all around the
- 8:56camp, blow yours and shout for the Lord
- 8:59and for Gideon, Gideon and the hundred men
- 9:02with him reached the edge of the camp
- 9:03at the beginning of the middle watch.
- 9:05Just after they had changed the guard, they
- 9:07blew their trumpets and broke the jars that
- 9:09were in their hands.
- 9:09The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed
- 9:12the jars, grasping the torches in their left
- 9:14hands and holding in their right hands, the
- 9:16trumpets they were to blow.
- 9:17They shouted a sword for the Lord and
- 9:19for Gideon.
- 9:20While each man held his position around the
- 9:22camp, all the Midianites ran crying out as
- 9:25they fled.
- 9:26When the 300 trumpets sounded, the Lord caused
- 9:28them in throughout the camp to turn on
- 9:29each other with their swords.
- 9:32Okay.
- 9:33So God fulfills his promise with only 300
- 9:36people, again, with a kind of clever mechanism
- 9:39of making them sound like more people by
- 9:41smashing these jars and waving these torches.
- 9:43God delivers Israel from the entire Midianite force.
- 9:47And yet it's so obvious that there's a
- 9:49miraculous component here because it's such a tiny
- 9:52force that's doing what God desires.
- 9:55So could it be sometimes that God is
- 9:58coming to us like he came to Gideon
- 10:00and saying, you have too many men.
- 10:03I cannot deliver Midian into their hands.
- 10:07Is God ever coming to us and saying,
- 10:09you have too many resources.
- 10:11You have too much influence.
- 10:13You have too strong of a situation.
- 10:16It needs to get more unstrategic so that
- 10:19I can show up in a miraculous way.
- 10:22Now that might sound kind of abstract.
- 10:24So let's apply it to the question of
- 10:25work and careers as we always do in
- 10:28this podcast.
- 10:29Here are some unstrategic things that God might
- 10:32ask you to do.
- 10:34Maybe to take a job with lower pay
- 10:37because that job's aligned with a kingdom opportunity
- 10:40that God has put on your heart, whether
- 10:42in the marketplace or in the ministry church
- 10:44world.
- 10:45Maybe God is calling you to stay where
- 10:48you are geographically and invest in your community,
- 10:51even though that means passing up an opportunity
- 10:53for a promotion somewhere else, a more remunerative
- 10:57or more influential job in a different city.
- 11:01Maybe God is calling you to work for
- 11:03the good of a competitor, somebody who you
- 11:06can tell is competing with you for maybe
- 11:08a promotion, maybe for the same resources.
- 11:11Maybe they don't even have your best interests
- 11:12at heart.
- 11:12Maybe they're kind of a nasty competitor.
- 11:14Maybe God is calling you to love that
- 11:16person, to root for them, to try and
- 11:18help them succeed.
- 11:22Oh, oh, that would be hard.
- 11:24That sounds unstrategic.
- 11:25It also sounds like the teaching of Jesus
- 11:27to love our enemies.
- 11:30Maybe it's something smaller.
- 11:32Maybe you're in a situation at work where
- 11:34you see something differently than someone else, and
- 11:37you really want to insist on your way,
- 11:39but instead, you realize, I can let the
- 11:41other person have the last word.
- 11:43I don't have to get my way, even
- 11:45though I care about it.
- 11:46I don't have to, I don't have to
- 11:48have the last word.
- 11:50Oh, that one's really painful for me.
- 11:52I always want to, because my way is
- 11:54the right way.
- 11:54I don't just have an opinion.
- 11:56I have a reason for my opinion, darn
- 11:57it.
- 11:58And yet, to have humility is to recognize
- 12:01it doesn't always have to go my way.
- 12:05I can, I can submit to others in
- 12:07love.
- 12:07I can let go of control sometimes.
- 12:10Or maybe this is something more to do
- 12:12with like our spiritual practices.
- 12:14Think about the practice of fasting.
- 12:16To me, it's really unstrategic to not eat.
- 12:19I get cranky when I don't eat.
- 12:21I get tired when I don't eat.
- 12:22I just, I don't like it when I
- 12:23don't eat.
- 12:24It seems like it would be much more
- 12:24strategic to just always eat.
- 12:27And yet, somehow when I fast, and I'm
- 12:32learning this as I go from others, I
- 12:34realize that God's power is made available to
- 12:37me in some special way.
- 12:40And in all of these situations, if we're
- 12:42answering the call of God on our lives,
- 12:45we're opening ourselves up to God's power.
- 12:49Because that's the trade-off, right?
- 12:51Coming back to the teaching of Jesus, is
- 12:53there's that treasure in the field.
- 12:54We're not just, you know, selling and liquidating
- 12:57our assets for fun or for no good
- 12:59reason.
- 12:59We're not just buying fields left and right
- 13:00just because they're there.
- 13:02No, no, no.
- 13:02We're buying fields where the treasure is.
- 13:05We're buying the field where there's some sort
- 13:07of payoff there from the Lord if His
- 13:10promise is true.
- 13:11We're betting on His promise proving true.
- 13:16And so that can look like any Kingdom
- 13:19of God moment in your life.
- 13:22Whether it's in the workplace or in your
- 13:24relationships, in your church community, wherever the Kingdom
- 13:27of God is showing up, and you see
- 13:29there's an opportunity, God might be asking you,
- 13:33do you want to sell things off so
- 13:36you can buy that field?
- 13:37Do you want to take a risk for
- 13:40the Kingdom of God?
- 13:41Do you want to let me have the
- 13:43glory because I'm the one who's going to
- 13:45provide for you?
- 13:46I'm the one who's going to carry the
- 13:48day, both physically and spiritually.
- 13:51In each of those moments, whenever we say
- 13:55yes to the invitation of God, we're opening
- 13:58ourselves up to receive His power.
- 14:02That's the paradox of the Kingdom, is that
- 14:05we can't get more power by hanging onto
- 14:08it, holding onto it tightly, grasping it with
- 14:10our fists.
- 14:11It's actually when we open our hands and
- 14:14we let go of control, we let go
- 14:17of that kind of strategic overseeing of the
- 14:20universe, that our hands are actually open to
- 14:23receive God's power.
- 14:26And what God accomplishes through us in that
- 14:29posture is greater than anything we could do
- 14:31the other way.
- 14:33Sometimes being unstrategic is the most strategic thing
- 14:37of all.
- 14:40Lord Jesus, give us your divine wisdom to
- 14:44know when you're asking us to be unstrategic.
- 14:47Help us to use our minds as well
- 14:49as we can to do the right thing,
- 14:51and yet also bless our hearts to be
- 14:54open when the right thing is to let
- 14:57go, to be open to you, and to
- 15:00receive your power.
- 15:02Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 15:04do our work with you.
- 15:06Amen.
- 15:10Thanks for listening.
