- 0:02Speaker 1: Go Big Red.
- 0:03Speaker 2: It takes the numbers, the chaos, Hunter Austin Dak talking
- 0:09Speaker 2: corn Husker football, basketball, and everything Nebraska sports.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Welcome to the Return to Glory Podcast.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Return to Glory Podcast, Hunter Zarberniki here on my own
- 0:34Speaker 3: today featuring the wide receivers, tight ends, and offensive line
- 0:42Speaker 3: preview for the upcoming season. We are live on YouTube
- 0:47Speaker 3: this morning on Thursday, August sixth Austin and I did
- 0:51Speaker 3: try recording earlier this morning, and let's just say we
- 0:57Speaker 3: had some audio issues, definitely user air. We're still figuring
- 1:01Speaker 3: things out here with this new live streaming.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So Austin was on mute the whole time, which is
- 1:07Speaker 1: not what we want.
- 1:08Speaker 3: So here I am re recording here this morning and
- 1:12Speaker 3: trying to get you guys some good content on our
- 1:15Speaker 3: wide receivers, tight ends, and offensive line. Start with our
- 1:18Speaker 3: offensive line, and we probably should have started on Monday
- 1:22Speaker 3: with this group, because as we all know, this is
- 1:25Speaker 3: the most important unit on any successful football team. We
- 1:31Speaker 3: have had our ups and downs with the offensive line
- 1:34Speaker 3: in the history of our podcast, in the history of
- 1:36Speaker 3: our lives. Before our lifetime, we had a very strong
- 1:41Speaker 3: offensive line, and as usual, that correlates with success on
- 1:46Speaker 3: the field. I think this crew could have potential to
- 1:54Speaker 3: be one of the better offensive lines that we've seen.
- 1:56Speaker 3: We've been told that, but really going off of nothing
- 2:00Speaker 3: other than the fact that we are paying them money
- 2:03Speaker 3: to come here and play. This group has powerful experience.
- 2:08Speaker 3: We have a refresh on the coaching staff bringing in
- 2:11Speaker 3: offensive line coach Jeep Wade from Georgia Tech. And can
- 2:16Speaker 3: I say Jeep Wade. If that's not an offensive line
- 2:19Speaker 3: coach's name, I do not know what is.
- 2:22Speaker 1: This group has some experience.
- 2:25Speaker 3: As I mentioned before, last year, we experimented with paying
- 2:30Speaker 3: an offensive lineman from a Power four conference in Elijah Pritchett,
- 2:34Speaker 3: and he's going to start here at left tackle for US,
- 2:36Speaker 3: the second year transfer from Alabama. Early on in the season,
- 2:42Speaker 3: I think there were some question marks with him as
- 2:44Speaker 3: are we getting out of.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Him what we are paying him.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And by the end of the year, I believe Elijah
- 2:50Speaker 3: Pritchett became one of our strongest offensive linemen and that
- 2:54Speaker 3: showed as we finished out the year, even though maybe
- 2:57Speaker 3: record wise it didn't go that way. But he's back
- 3:00Speaker 3: and is projected to start at left tackle for US.
- 3:04Speaker 3: We bring in a couple of other new guys here
- 3:08Speaker 3: on that grip at right tackle, we're expected to get
- 3:12Speaker 3: tree Baba Lade incoming here and he's the right tackle
- 3:17Speaker 3: transfer from South Carolina and we're paying him a good
- 3:23Speaker 3: dime to a dozen.
- 3:24Speaker 1: To start here at right tackle.
- 3:26Speaker 3: At right guard projected right guard the Iowa State transfer
- 3:33Speaker 3: Benjamin Black again, another guy that's had Power five experience.
- 3:40Speaker 3: He's actually a starter for Iowa State. When coach Campbell
- 3:43Speaker 3: then left to head to Penn State, Brendan blackud be
- 3:53Speaker 3: Brendan Black, not Benjamin Black. Brendan Black decided to come
- 3:57Speaker 3: to Lincoln at left guard. We inspect Paul mcbenga, that
- 4:01Speaker 3: transfer from LSU to take over that job and fill
- 4:05Speaker 3: in that void, also paying him some decent nil money
- 4:09Speaker 3: to come play. I guess we're paying everybody, and everybody
- 4:12Speaker 3: in college football is doing that. So I do think
- 4:15Speaker 3: the offensive line group is one that we specifically targeted
- 4:18Speaker 3: though and went out to make sure that we have
- 4:21Speaker 3: a solid group up front. And then lastly, I'm hoping
- 4:26Speaker 3: that our strength of our unit is coming from the
- 4:30Speaker 3: center position of Justin Evans, who moved over from guard
- 4:33Speaker 3: to center.
- 4:35Speaker 1: After taking over for Ben Scott last year.
- 4:38Speaker 3: He has potential to be one of the better centers
- 4:42Speaker 3: in the Big Ten is what I've been hearing and
- 4:45Speaker 3: think that that could come to fruition. I do think
- 4:49Speaker 3: having centers as one of your strongest pieces of your
- 4:52Speaker 3: offensive line is very important. I think the left tackle
- 4:56Speaker 3: position also is important due to that's protecting your quarterback blindside.
- 5:00Speaker 3: But justin Evans at the center position leading this unit,
- 5:05Speaker 3: the most experienced veteran that.
- 5:07Speaker 1: We have on this group.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Some backup guys here that also have seen the field,
- 5:14Speaker 3: which I also think is a positive to provide some depth.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Gunner Getula, Grant Bricks, Sammy Sledge, Tyler Kanak, Jake Peters
- 5:22Speaker 3: backing up at center there, brock Canwts and some different
- 5:26Speaker 3: names that you may have heard of from the previous year.
- 5:28Speaker 3: All those guys are back and will be available if
- 5:33Speaker 3: needed on this offensive unit for the Huskers. I think
- 5:39Speaker 3: the big question that we need to answer, and we're
- 5:42Speaker 3: not going to know really until we start playing some
- 5:45Speaker 3: true opponents and I'm not counting our first three, is
- 5:48Speaker 3: how will this unit do against a above average defensive
- 5:53Speaker 3: line and not only protecting the quarterback As we had
- 5:58Speaker 3: our negative moments with Dylan Royola, last year, but also
- 6:04Speaker 3: just establishing a run game, which was one of our strengths.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Was our strength last year on offense under Dana Holgerson
- 6:11Speaker 3: with Emmitt Johnson. So I think that the first three
- 6:15Speaker 3: games are gonna give us a glimpse. I think these
- 6:18Speaker 3: first three games, we're gonna want to see some production
- 6:20Speaker 3: off of this offensive line and you know, getting.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Third and shorts, you know, third.
- 6:25Speaker 3: And two's, can we open up some holes on first
- 6:28Speaker 3: down for our running backs, And then when it comes
- 6:30Speaker 3: to protecting Calandria, you know, Calandria has some mobility, so
- 6:35Speaker 3: that will help lower the sack number from a year ago.
- 6:39Speaker 3: But at the same time, we're gonna have to do
- 6:43Speaker 3: a better job of not having.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Him right away catch a snap and take off.
- 6:47Speaker 3: And we saw that with Adrian Martinez and what that
- 6:51Speaker 3: looked like with that offensive line group often where you
- 6:54Speaker 3: know you don't even have time to make your reads
- 6:56Speaker 3: in the passing game and go through that. So anyways,
- 6:59Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of optimism for this offensive
- 7:01Speaker 3: line group, which is more than we can say in
- 7:04Speaker 3: some other years where the offensive line has been the
- 7:07Speaker 3: weak point and that usually does not end well for
- 7:11Speaker 3: an offense at the tight end position. Luke lind and
- 7:15Speaker 3: Meyer leading this group, he took more traditional approach of
- 7:20Speaker 3: development where he came in as a red shirt freshman
- 7:22Speaker 3: and has been here since and developed and now has
- 7:25Speaker 3: earned his way to the number one starting job here
- 7:28Speaker 3: at tight end and should be a very solid option
- 7:32Speaker 3: at that position. Carter Nelson, I would say, maybe is
- 7:36Speaker 3: one of the more disappointment stories of development in the
- 7:39Speaker 3: opposite of linden Meyer's way, where as a freshman we
- 7:43Speaker 3: saw some moments and really haven't seen much since there's
- 7:47Speaker 3: been some injuries involved there. But we're hoping we can
- 7:50Speaker 3: see some more out of Carter Nelson, whether that be
- 7:52Speaker 3: a as a true tight end or maybe more of
- 7:54Speaker 3: a receiving split out tight end here this upcoming year
- 8:00Speaker 3: and then the receiving group here and some people are
- 8:03Speaker 3: talking about our receiving core being the quote unquote strength
- 8:07Speaker 3: of this team. I do think it's very deep. It
- 8:09Speaker 3: also has quite a bit of experience. In fact, I
- 8:12Speaker 3: did hear stat just Nebraska in general we are the
- 8:15Speaker 3: third most returning production and they factor in transfer production
- 8:21Speaker 3: as well into this metric in the entire country, So
- 8:23Speaker 3: third most in the entire country and returning production. A
- 8:27Speaker 3: year ago, we were one of the least returning production
- 8:33Speaker 3: and most inexperienced teams. So again another thing, if you
- 8:36Speaker 3: want to be optimistic and start drinking the kool aid
- 8:39Speaker 3: with what you got with this schedule, that's one reason
- 8:42Speaker 3: to be optimistic if you think that even matters. Some people,
- 8:45Speaker 3: obviously with the portal, don't even think that matters. So anyways,
- 8:50Speaker 3: this wide receiving group led by Jacry Barney and Isaiah Hunter,
- 8:54Speaker 3: two guys been here a year ago. I think they're
- 8:57Speaker 3: both going to be leading the team in targets and catches,
- 9:01Speaker 3: most likely Quasi Gilmour the transfer from UCLA. I think
- 9:05Speaker 3: all three of these guys bringing some dynamic capabilities to
- 9:10Speaker 3: this offense.
- 9:11Speaker 1: In their own way.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Jacori and then Janiron Bonner, who's coming off an injury
- 9:16Speaker 3: from last year. Those guys are going to be two
- 9:19Speaker 3: more guys playing in the slot where Isaiah Hunter Quasi
- 9:23Speaker 3: Gilmore are going to be more of.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Your balanced receivers that have some speed to him. But also.
- 9:30Speaker 3: You're going to see some different abilities there with their
- 9:35Speaker 3: possession capabilities too. So the other guys, Quinn Clark, Quartes Mills,
- 9:45Speaker 3: both returning sophomores, this year, coming off their freshman season.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I do think both of them are are going to
- 9:54Speaker 3: have some upside. Give us some depth here. Quinn Clark's
- 9:57Speaker 3: a very tall receiver at six y six, maybe possession receiver,
- 10:01Speaker 3: end zone, red zone receiver, you can call him. And
- 10:04Speaker 3: then the guy that's begin talking about a lot recently
- 10:08Speaker 3: that I'm excited to see and see what all this
- 10:11Speaker 3: hype and buzz is about. Is Jeremiah Jones, the red
- 10:14Speaker 3: shirt freshman he'll he'll, you were on number eighty this fall.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I've heard some different things just in recent days heading
- 10:21Speaker 3: into fall camp and beginning fall camp on his ability
- 10:24Speaker 3: to be a dynamic playmaker even as a freshman.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Here we hear these stories all the time.
- 10:30Speaker 3: We heard them about Carter Nelson as an example a lot,
- 10:33Speaker 3: and you know, you see some of that, but it's
- 10:36Speaker 3: just hard to believe anything until you actually see it
- 10:39Speaker 3: on the field. And with all three of these units
- 10:43Speaker 3: wide receivers, tight ends, and offensive line combine well. With
- 10:48Speaker 3: that being said, we'll talk more about our offensive identity
- 10:51Speaker 3: and episodes to come tomorrow. We hope to be back
- 10:54Speaker 3: at six thirty am with audio working and hoping to
- 10:57Speaker 3: have a special guest on with you well on the
