- 0:00Speaker 1: I think my mindset shifted when I stopped competing and
- 0:04Speaker 1: being competitive and comparing myself to others, And now I
- 0:07Speaker 1: just like compare myself to myself. I want to outdo me,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Like I'm my biggest competition. Like I don't care who
- 0:13Speaker 1: you put in front of me. I know everything about myself.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I know my good and I know my bad, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm my biggest competition.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Hey, hey, EMILYA Bodi.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Here.
- 0:35Speaker 3: You are listening to episode three hundred and sixty three
- 0:38Speaker 3: of Hurdle, a wellness focused podcast where we talk to
- 0:41Speaker 3: inspirational people about everything from their highest ties and.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Toughest moments to essential tips on.
- 0:46Speaker 3: How to live a healthier, happier, more motivated life. We
- 0:50Speaker 3: all go through our fair share of hurdles. My goal
- 0:53Speaker 3: through these discussions is to empower you to better navigate
- 0:56Speaker 3: yours and move with intention so that you can stride
- 0:59Speaker 3: towards her own big potential and of course, have some
- 1:03Speaker 3: fun along the way. For today's episode, I am bringing
- 1:07Speaker 3: you a rewind my July twenty twenty three conversation with
- 1:12Speaker 3: the One, the Only Sophie Cunningham. Sophie's been making a
- 1:16Speaker 3: lot of headlines lately and so I think it's about
- 1:18Speaker 3: time that if you're.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Not well acquainted with her, you learn a thing or two. Now.
- 1:23Speaker 3: When we recorded this, she was playing basketball for the
- 1:26Speaker 3: Phoenix Mercury. She has since been traded to the Indiana Fever.
- 1:31Speaker 3: We talk about her upbringing on a farm and how
- 1:34Speaker 3: that helped shape who she is today. She talks to
- 1:37Speaker 3: me about her no nonsense attitude toward gameplay and the
- 1:42Speaker 3: lessons that she learned playing alongside one of the best
- 1:45Speaker 3: to ever do it, Diana Tarassi. As a Yukon grad myself,
- 1:49Speaker 3: I've got a lot of DT pride and really dive
- 1:53Speaker 3: in to her mindset, how she stays so confident, how
- 1:57Speaker 3: she holds her ground when it might not be the
- 2:01Speaker 3: popular opinion. It's really interesting to listen to this conversation
- 2:05Speaker 3: now with everything that's going on in the w and
- 2:07Speaker 3: especially with the Fever. Her defense of friend and teammate
- 2:11Speaker 3: Caitlin Clark.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It's epic. I love it.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Oh.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Of note, we also talked about the Olympics in this episode,
- 2:18Speaker 3: so if we didn't get to check that dream off
- 2:20Speaker 3: her bucket list just yet, but something tells me there
- 2:23Speaker 3: are good things ahead for her for LA twenty eight
- 2:28Speaker 3: make sure you're following along with Hurdle over on the socials.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It's at Hurdle Podcast.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I am over at Emily a Body and you know
- 2:36Speaker 3: the drill of you're not yet subscribed to the weekly
- 2:39Speaker 3: Hurdle newsletter. It's the substack that comes out every Friday,
- 2:42Speaker 3: bringing so much of the same inspiration motivation you love
- 2:45Speaker 3: from the show directly into your inbox. You can do
- 2:48Speaker 3: that today by clicking on over to the show notes.
- 2:50Speaker 3: It is absolutely free. I think that's it with that,
- 2:55Speaker 3: Let's get to it. Let's get it's a hurdling.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Today. I am sitting down with Sophie Cunningham.
- 3:11Speaker 3: She is a pro WNBA player for the Phoenix Mercury.
- 3:15Speaker 2: How are you doing today, Sophie.
- 3:17Speaker 1: So good. I'm so excited for this and to chat
- 3:19Speaker 1: with you a little bit.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I am so excited for this too.
- 3:22Speaker 3: You are a busy person by the nature of the
- 3:24Speaker 3: fact that you typically play so many games every week,
- 3:28Speaker 3: so I just want to like take a down step
- 3:30Speaker 3: really quick and ask you, how are you doing really today?
- 3:35Speaker 1: Well, thank you, I'm so happy you asked that, because
- 3:38Speaker 1: I think when you get when you are in this
- 3:40Speaker 1: school terms like hey, how are you oh good bye.
- 3:43Speaker 1: You know. So it's just kind of a small talk.
- 3:44Speaker 1: But to be honest, I'm good. Like it's hot here
- 3:47Speaker 1: in Arizona. I was at the pool yesterday. My only
- 3:51Speaker 1: downfalls I have a broken finger right now. It's part
- 3:54Speaker 1: of it. But no, my family's coming down soon, and
- 3:56Speaker 1: so I'm in a good spot.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I'm happy with the broken How does that impact your
- 4:01Speaker 3: game and does that tweak you being able to get
- 4:03Speaker 3: on the court?
- 4:04Speaker 1: Not really, to be honest, because it's my off hand,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and so if people watch me play, I have like
- 4:08Speaker 1: a claw out there, like it looks awful and I
- 4:10Speaker 1: should probably get my nails done because you know it's
- 4:12Speaker 1: drawing attention. But whatever. But no, it's good. I mean,
- 4:15Speaker 1: the pressure of the ball sometimes hurts, but when you're
- 4:17Speaker 1: in it and your agentalin's going, it's all good.
- 4:19Speaker 2: It's all good. Yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I've watched your like your shooting style lately, and it
- 4:24Speaker 3: is certainly a little bit different.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah, a little bit. I let that thing fly, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I don't sometimes I'm not said, you know, it is
- 4:33Speaker 1: what it is, But as long as it goes in,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I'm not worried about it.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Is it safe to say that you love what you're
- 4:39Speaker 2: doing right now.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Yes, Like I just think, to be honest,
- 4:44Speaker 1: we're going through a heck of a year right now.
- 4:46Speaker 1: We got a new head coach, we just got a
- 4:48Speaker 1: new GM, we got new ownership last year with Matt
- 4:52Speaker 1: Ishbia and he's absolutely amazing and the people he's brought
- 4:54Speaker 1: in are really really good people. And I think we're
- 4:58Speaker 1: just kind of in that transition year where it's a
- 5:00Speaker 1: grind right now, and it's just one of those years
- 5:02Speaker 1: that you kind of have to find the joy in it,
- 5:05Speaker 1: find the beauty. It's definitely in a valley, but I
- 5:08Speaker 1: think there's so much growth and so much beauty when
- 5:12Speaker 1: when you're struggling, and so it's just kind of keeping
- 5:15Speaker 1: that growth mindset, that positive mindset through these times. It's
- 5:18Speaker 1: definitely testing our character. But for me, I don't look
- 5:22Speaker 1: at failures as a negative thing. I think when you're
- 5:25Speaker 1: kind of going through it is when you learn a
- 5:27Speaker 1: lot about yourself and about the culture and environment that
- 5:30Speaker 1: you're working in.
- 5:31Speaker 3: You're on the right podcast, lady, So talk to me
- 5:34Speaker 3: a little bit about where that mindset comes from for you.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Have you always been the kind of person that's able
- 5:41Speaker 3: to see the silver lining and the positives from a
- 5:44Speaker 3: struggle or has this been a thought process or a
- 5:47Speaker 3: mindset that has been acquired with time.
- 5:51Speaker 1: It's definitely been. Our family are very positive people who
- 5:54Speaker 1: are actually farmers. I grew up in Columbia, Missouri, and
- 5:57Speaker 1: so farming there's a lot of beauty in it, but
- 6:00Speaker 1: it's hard work. Like I think everyone in their lives
- 6:03Speaker 1: should go be a farmer for two days, two and
- 6:05Speaker 1: a half days, and I think you'd have a different
- 6:07Speaker 1: perspective on life just a little bit. But our family,
- 6:11Speaker 1: we're all very competitive. We have a lot of positive people,
- 6:14Speaker 1: a lot of positive male figures in our life, a
- 6:16Speaker 1: lot of positive female figures in our life. And so
- 6:18Speaker 1: me and my sister we got very blessed with our
- 6:20Speaker 1: environment growing up, and so yeah, we always kind of
- 6:23Speaker 1: saw the positive in things. But it's not always easy,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and especially when you're really going through it, it's hard.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Like before All Star Break, I was like what am
- 6:32Speaker 1: I doing with my life? Like this is not fun.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I was going through a rut. I couldn't throw the
- 6:37Speaker 1: ball into the ocean. I swear to God, I couldn't,
- 6:39Speaker 1: And I was just like this is awful, Like why
- 6:42Speaker 1: did I work so hard for this? But for me,
- 6:44Speaker 1: you know, I have great faith in God, and I
- 6:47Speaker 1: know that you know you're not going to stay down
- 6:49Speaker 1: there and you're learning something through those things. And so
- 6:52Speaker 1: for me, that's what keeps me going, That's what keeps
- 6:54Speaker 1: me motivated, is because I'm learning something through these valleys
- 6:57Speaker 1: and through these hard times. And me, I want to
- 7:00Speaker 1: be a great leader. I want to be a great teammate.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I want to be someone who's great in the community.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And you're not always going to be on top. Not
- 7:07Speaker 1: everything is always going to be rainbows and butterflies, And
- 7:09Speaker 1: so I think that when you can really embrace those struggles,
- 7:12Speaker 1: that's part of the story, and that the struggles what
- 7:15Speaker 1: makes it even more beautiful.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Definitely, No, totally makes sense.
- 7:18Speaker 3: You talk about this sentiment, what did I work so
- 7:21Speaker 3: hard for for this? Why did I work so hard?
- 7:23Speaker 3: And if it's going to be like this, talk to
- 7:25Speaker 3: us a little bit about that work. When did you
- 7:28Speaker 3: know that this was going to be the path that
- 7:31Speaker 3: you would be pursuing.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, to be honest, I think from a very young age,
- 7:36Speaker 1: I always wanted to be a professional basketball player, and
- 7:40Speaker 1: I found success at a really young age. You know,
- 7:42Speaker 1: even at the age of five, I was playing soccer
- 7:45Speaker 1: on a boys team and the boys parents were getting
- 7:48Speaker 1: mad at me, and my parents were like, she's too aggressive,
- 7:50Speaker 1: she's too physical, And my parents had to carry my
- 7:52Speaker 1: birth certificate around and be like, no, she's actually the
- 7:55Speaker 1: boy's age. You know, she's just a great athlete. So
- 7:58Speaker 1: you know, give her some props a little. And so
- 8:01Speaker 1: I wish I was better at school. I wish I
- 8:03Speaker 1: took it more seriously, because when I put my mind
- 8:05Speaker 1: to something, I can do it right. But my mind
- 8:08Speaker 1: was always making it to the WNBA. You know, there's
- 8:11Speaker 1: a lot of ups and downs there. There's a lot
- 8:13Speaker 1: of moments in high school that were hard. You missed
- 8:16Speaker 1: out on a ton of things. There's a lot of
- 8:18Speaker 1: stuff in college. There are people who were giving me
- 8:21Speaker 1: threats to take my life and to take my parents' life.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Like I really stirred the pot in college. Like I
- 8:25Speaker 1: don't know what I did, but I mean it's part
- 8:27Speaker 1: of it, right. And then once I got here, you know,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I think through the struggle. My first couple of years
- 8:34Speaker 1: in the WNBA, I really didn't play much. I was
- 8:36Speaker 1: Diana Tarossi's sub when she was hurt. I would go
- 8:39Speaker 1: in when she needed a breathere, I went in, and
- 8:41Speaker 1: I've never been someone to come off the bench, and
- 8:43Speaker 1: so it was like a whole new territory for me
- 8:45Speaker 1: because I've always been a starter through high school through college,
- 8:49Speaker 1: and so it was something I had to learn. But
- 8:51Speaker 1: through that process, I got in the gym every single
- 8:53Speaker 1: day and I made sure I got one percent better,
- 8:56Speaker 1: and so I stayed persistent. Even though I didn't like
- 8:58Speaker 1: where I was at, I still had to put in
- 8:59Speaker 1: the work because I knew that eventually it was gonna
- 9:02Speaker 1: my hard work was going to show and it was
- 9:04Speaker 1: going to pay off. And during this runt a couple
- 9:07Speaker 1: or a month ago, I had to have that same
- 9:09Speaker 1: mindset I had five years ago, because I was like,
- 9:11Speaker 1: what the heck is going on? Like I'm known as
- 9:13Speaker 1: a shooter, and I seriously could even make a layup,
- 9:15Speaker 1: like I have no idea what was going on. But
- 9:18Speaker 1: I still got in every day and I just made
- 9:20Speaker 1: sure that I was putting in the work because the
- 9:23Speaker 1: ball doesn't lie. And I hated putting in the work,
- 9:25Speaker 1: but sometimes you have to still do it even when
- 9:27Speaker 1: it's not fun.
- 9:29Speaker 3: So much to double click on here first and foremost
- 9:31Speaker 3: were people coming for you because of the way that
- 9:33Speaker 3: you played in high.
- 9:34Speaker 1: School that I was just feisty. I still am, but
- 9:39Speaker 1: really was in college. I just didn't back down. And
- 9:42Speaker 1: I'm the ultimate competitor and I'm someone who loves to compete.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And when I'm out on the floor, like I smile
- 9:47Speaker 1: and I laugh and like if you say something to me,
- 9:50Speaker 1: I'm coming right back at you. Like I'm someone who
- 9:51Speaker 1: has to have the last word. And I'm not saying
- 9:53Speaker 1: that's a good thing. It's got me into a wool
- 9:55Speaker 1: a couple of times, but that's what makes me me,
- 9:58Speaker 1: Like I'm sassy, I'm fisty, I'm gonna have my teams
- 10:01Speaker 1: back and do whatever it takes to win. And so
- 10:03Speaker 1: I'll never apologize for that.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I remember I was reading an article on Britney Griner
- 10:09Speaker 3: was talking about how she also has your back, right.
- 10:11Speaker 3: I forget what game it was in, but someone had
- 10:14Speaker 3: I think, like shoved you to the core and it
- 10:16Speaker 3: was like all hands on deck, like we've got your.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Back, just like you've got ours.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Oh yeah, And that is such a fun environment to
- 10:24Speaker 1: be a part of, and a culture to be a
- 10:25Speaker 1: part of is when you know your whole team supports
- 10:28Speaker 1: you and has you, then you can put your kind
- 10:31Speaker 1: of neck on the line when something happens for them too.
- 10:33Speaker 1: But when everyone has each other, it's a fun place
- 10:35Speaker 1: to play in definitely.
- 10:37Speaker 3: And you mentioned you know, and thank you for your
- 10:40Speaker 3: vulnerability here talking about being in these difficult moments. Talk
- 10:44Speaker 3: me through where your mind goes when these challenges arise.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Is it straight to this place where you're like, all right,
- 10:52Speaker 3: like put in the work, I've got this whatever, or
- 10:54Speaker 3: do you have some time where you actually feel your
- 10:56Speaker 3: feelings as well?
- 10:59Speaker 1: Start here we go, we're about to unpack this. So
- 11:04Speaker 1: normally I'm a very much like go with the flow
- 11:07Speaker 1: type person, Like I no matter what's going on, I
- 11:11Speaker 1: want to have fun. I want to make sure people
- 11:13Speaker 1: feel good. That's just who I am. But I just
- 11:16Speaker 1: started working with a sports psychologist because honestly, at this point,
- 11:21Speaker 1: everyone is good. Everyone are elite athletes. I mean, we're
- 11:24Speaker 1: in the toughest league in the whole entire world, and
- 11:27Speaker 1: so what are you doing to set yourself apart? And
- 11:29Speaker 1: for me, that's my mental game. Like if I if
- 11:31Speaker 1: my mental is on, I don't care who you put
- 11:33Speaker 1: in front of me. I'm beating them, you know what
- 11:36Speaker 1: I mean. But that's part of the process of what
- 11:38Speaker 1: I'm going through right now, is getting to that point.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And so a couple of weeks ago, when I was
- 11:42Speaker 1: in the rut, I called my sports like guy, poor Zach,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you probably think I'm crazy. I've just started working with him,
- 11:48Speaker 1: and I was like, I am in a rut, and
- 11:49Speaker 1: I think I'm going to kill someone. Like I have
- 11:51Speaker 1: cried so much. I am just frustrated, like I don't
- 11:55Speaker 1: know what is going on, and I don't I'm not
- 11:57Speaker 1: a crier, and I normally see the positives, but like
- 12:01Speaker 1: for a couple of days, like I was just like
- 12:03Speaker 1: in my feelings and to me, like looking back, it's
- 12:06Speaker 1: funny now, but I'm so glad that I let myself
- 12:08Speaker 1: go there, because like I let myself feel like that's
- 12:11Speaker 1: part of this journey and a part of being a
- 12:13Speaker 1: professional athlete is you have a thousands of thousands of
- 12:16Speaker 1: people always watching your every single move. Like I can't
- 12:19Speaker 1: go anywhere. It's a blessing. I can't go anywhere out
- 12:22Speaker 1: here without someone being like, oh are you Sophie from
- 12:25Speaker 1: the Phoenix Mercury, and so like you always have to
- 12:28Speaker 1: dot your eyes, cross your t's, you know what I mean.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And so it's a lot of pressure sometimes and so
- 12:32Speaker 1: for me just to kind of stay home and feel
- 12:34Speaker 1: my feelings right down in my journal and honestly pray
- 12:37Speaker 1: and just get away from people was probably the best
- 12:39Speaker 1: thing I did. And now I'm back, you know, like
- 12:41Speaker 1: I let myself feel, put it aside, and now here
- 12:43Speaker 1: you go.
- 12:44Speaker 3: You're rewarded with the fact that you are allowing yourself
- 12:48Speaker 3: to go through all of those different emotions. Clearly working
- 12:52Speaker 3: with this sports psychologist is certainly having an impact on you.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Is this the first time that you've worked with a
- 12:58Speaker 3: sports psychologist and what would you say are some of
- 13:02Speaker 3: the best takeaways that you've had from your collaboration so far?
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's not. We had a great sports psychologist
- 13:09Speaker 1: in college, Scott and Morton. She was absolutely phenomenal and
- 13:13Speaker 1: she helped me a lot through college. And I think
- 13:15Speaker 1: what I've taken away from her and from Zach and
- 13:18Speaker 1: Brett Ledbetter so far is like this, this is life.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Like You're not always going to be on top of
- 13:25Speaker 1: the mountain, You're not always going to be in the valley,
- 13:26Speaker 1: So you can't allow yourself to get so high and
- 13:28Speaker 1: get so low and it's okay to feel and the
- 13:30Speaker 1: hard times are never going to last. The good times
- 13:32Speaker 1: are never going to last. And so I think for me,
- 13:36Speaker 1: it's just putting my best foot forward every day and
- 13:38Speaker 1: if I can try to be better every single day,
- 13:40Speaker 1: sometimes that's going to look different. It's going to look
- 13:42Speaker 1: different every single day. But if I am am trying
- 13:47Speaker 1: to be better every single day, they eventually this long journey,
- 13:50Speaker 1: I'm going to get who I want to be. And
- 13:51Speaker 1: you know that I have a lot of goals. But again,
- 13:55Speaker 1: I keep saying this, but it's so true because I
- 13:57Speaker 1: think people think that when you're a professional athlete that
- 14:00Speaker 1: everything always goes your way and that you don't have
- 14:02Speaker 1: hard days, you don't have hard months or hard years
- 14:04Speaker 1: or hard seasons, and that's just not true at all.
- 14:07Speaker 1: We're still human and this is still our job, and
- 14:10Speaker 1: everyone's job is not always fun, and so it's just
- 14:13Speaker 1: part of the beauty. Quit your rest foot forward every
- 14:15Speaker 1: single day and trying to get one percent better every day.
- 14:17Speaker 2: One percent better every day.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I love that he's touched on the fact that you
- 14:21Speaker 3: have a lot of eyes on you. Those eyes, the
- 14:23Speaker 3: number of eyes have been growing every year every season.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Was there an adjustment period for that for you?
- 14:32Speaker 1: Not really. I think I was like I've always wanted
- 14:35Speaker 1: to be, honestly, like a singer, like a country music singer.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Like I always wanted to be on stage singing, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: like having the crowd out in front of me. So
- 14:42Speaker 1: I think I was like born to kind of entertain
- 14:44Speaker 1: a little bit. But with that it's hard, man, Like,
- 14:48Speaker 1: you can't offend people who don't have an ego. And
- 14:51Speaker 1: that's something that I've really held onto because when you
- 14:53Speaker 1: have good games and you let all these people praise
- 14:56Speaker 1: you and it makes you feel so good, Well, when
- 14:58Speaker 1: you have a bad game, you're still gonna look these
- 15:00Speaker 1: same people who are going to be, you know, kind
- 15:03Speaker 1: of shitting on you a little bit, and you're going
- 15:04Speaker 1: to let that take the heart too. So I just
- 15:06Speaker 1: kind of block it out. I try to be a
- 15:08Speaker 1: positive influence with all my social media's. I just try
- 15:11Speaker 1: to bring light to people, bring a smile to people,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and I try not to take it too seriously. But
- 15:17Speaker 1: then I think there are important topics like mental health
- 15:20Speaker 1: and kids and teenagers who are in sport that need
- 15:24Speaker 1: to hear things that are the truth, And so I
- 15:26Speaker 1: think the older I get, I want to kind of
- 15:28Speaker 1: take on that mentor role shift a little bit to
- 15:30Speaker 1: help people with their journey. But also like it's so fun.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Like I think mental health people are always like, oh,
- 15:35Speaker 1: it's so tight and scary to talk about, but I
- 15:37Speaker 1: think it's honestly kind of really fun to talk about.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Well, then let's talk about it. Let's do it.
- 15:42Speaker 3: So what has your experience been when it comes to
- 15:46Speaker 3: taking care of your mental health?
- 15:48Speaker 2: Would you say that you've always been able?
- 15:51Speaker 3: I know I asked you before about upkeeping with this
- 15:53Speaker 3: positive mindset, but have you had experiences in your life
- 15:57Speaker 3: where getting to that place has been jalon for you?
- 16:01Speaker 1: Sometimes in the middle of season when you don't when
- 16:04Speaker 1: you're traveling a lot and you can't get that balance
- 16:06Speaker 1: is sometimes when it kind of turns into a grind
- 16:09Speaker 1: and you can't appreciate that you could do dribble orange
- 16:11Speaker 1: basketball for a living. And so I've always been someone,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I promise you. From a very very young age, I
- 16:16Speaker 1: think everyone's like, oh, she had to be a gym
- 16:18Speaker 1: rat if she made it to the league, or the
- 16:19Speaker 1: way she shoot, she has to be in the gym
- 16:21Speaker 1: six hours a day. And that's honestly the absolute opposite
- 16:24Speaker 1: thing I ever did. Like I when I went to
- 16:26Speaker 1: practice and I got in my extra shots, and when
- 16:28Speaker 1: I'm in the gym, I'm in the zone and I'm
- 16:30Speaker 1: going one hundred and ten percent. No one is outworking me.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I promise you that. But then when practice is done,
- 16:35Speaker 1: I'm going straight to the pool, I'm going to the lake,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'm going somewhere outdoors. I'm hanging with my friends, and
- 16:40Speaker 1: I'm not doing anything with basketball. And I think that's
- 16:43Speaker 1: why I have found success is because I have that
- 16:46Speaker 1: healthy balance of I put in my work and I
- 16:49Speaker 1: go super super hard, and I feel good about what
- 16:52Speaker 1: I did, and then I get to go lay out
- 16:54Speaker 1: at the pool tan and turn my brain off and
- 16:57Speaker 1: just enjoy life. And so I do think it is
- 17:00Speaker 1: very important to kind of have that balance.
- 17:02Speaker 3: So then, what does mentorship look like for you right
- 17:05Speaker 3: now when it comes to either speaking out about mental
- 17:09Speaker 3: health or other topic areas that you are enthusiastic about.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I think just sharing as much as well. We're
- 17:18Speaker 1: traveling a time right now, so it looks a little
- 17:19Speaker 1: different than it does in the off season. But right
- 17:22Speaker 1: now I think it's just like kind of showing my
- 17:24Speaker 1: day to day, showing what I eat, showing what our
- 17:27Speaker 1: practices look like. I'm at the pool all the time,
- 17:30Speaker 1: showing people like, hey, you know, I'm here, I'm chilling,
- 17:33Speaker 1: I'm getting my time in, my balance in and for me,
- 17:38Speaker 1: I have a lot of people reach out and I
- 17:39Speaker 1: try to get back with them. In the off season,
- 17:42Speaker 1: we host a Sophie Cunningham Classic back home in Columbia, Missouri,
- 17:46Speaker 1: and we make sure we talk with every team and
- 17:49Speaker 1: make them ask us questions like let us help mentor you,
- 17:52Speaker 1: because it is hard being a teenage girl, especially when
- 17:55Speaker 1: you're tall and you have bigger shoulders than the guys
- 17:58Speaker 1: and you have bigger muscles and the guys like it's hard,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and sometimes it does take a mental kind of beaten
- 18:03Speaker 1: on you because you just you just don't feel girly
- 18:07Speaker 1: or you just feel bigger than everyone. But we're like, no, sister,
- 18:10Speaker 1: that is your superpower. And one day you were going
- 18:12Speaker 1: to love your shoulders. You're gonna love how tall you are,
- 18:14Speaker 1: so embracing and put your shoulders back.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Did you go through a period where you had difficulty
- 18:18Speaker 3: accepting yourself for what you had to offer?
- 18:22Speaker 1: Honestly, This is so funny because I'm six to one
- 18:25Speaker 1: and I'm like anywhere from one hundred and sixty five
- 18:27Speaker 1: to one hundred and seventy two pounds, Like I do
- 18:30Speaker 1: not hide that, like I am a.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Big specific range.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Like well that's like that's the brain Ti'm
- 18:36Speaker 1: always in. And I say one hundred and seventy two
- 18:38Speaker 1: because like that could be the highest. But I proudly
- 18:41Speaker 1: say that. But I am so blessed because I had
- 18:44Speaker 1: an aunt who was six', three my mom was five,
- 18:47Speaker 1: eleven my grandma was five. Ten we have really tall
- 18:51Speaker 1: athletic women and we're not we're we're not, fatigue and
- 18:55Speaker 1: so they're always, like you, know embrace, that like that
- 18:57Speaker 1: is your, Superpower like this is what's going to make
- 18:59Speaker 1: you stand. Out AND i think from a very young
- 19:02Speaker 1: and our father, FIGURES i also want we always kind
- 19:06Speaker 1: of are really hard on. Men but my dad is
- 19:09Speaker 1: the best girl dad THAT i have ever. Seen my
- 19:12Speaker 1: uncles are the best girl. Uncles my grandpa like everyone
- 19:15Speaker 1: really embraced us and like put us on this pedestal
- 19:17Speaker 1: to like be, beautiful, strong tall, women and that's going
- 19:21Speaker 1: to be your. Superpower that's what's going to make you
- 19:23Speaker 1: stand out and become who you want to. Be and
- 19:25Speaker 1: so for, Me i've just carried that message. ON i
- 19:28Speaker 1: tell young girls that all the, time AND i also
- 19:30Speaker 1: tell young boys that BECAUSE i think that they deal
- 19:33Speaker 1: with a lot of mental health issues that we don't
- 19:35Speaker 1: give them credit for or try to help them as.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Much and so for, ME i do want to help
- 19:40Speaker 1: the young girls as much as, possible BUT i do
- 19:42Speaker 1: think it is important to help the young boys as
- 19:44Speaker 1: well who are in.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Sports, yeah being able to open up about this stuff
- 19:48Speaker 3: that they may not feel necessarily safe to.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Do so all of the, time talk to us.
- 19:53Speaker 3: A little bit about what excites you right now with
- 19:57Speaker 3: the work that you're, doing both in and out side of.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Basketball all, right we'll start within. Basketball for, ME i
- 20:04Speaker 1: am twenty. Six it is my fifth year in the,
- 20:07Speaker 1: league and what is so exciting for? Me And i'm
- 20:11Speaker 1: not a patient person and so it kind of sucks,
- 20:13Speaker 1: sometimes but it's exciting right now that people don't reach
- 20:17Speaker 1: their best basketball until they're thirty two years old in the,
- 20:20Speaker 1: league and so for, me Like i'm making big, STRIDES
- 20:25Speaker 1: i am staying here in the off season And i'm
- 20:27Speaker 1: getting a. Trainer i've worked on my, Diet i'm in
- 20:29Speaker 1: the weight, room my conditioning. Level i'm doing SOME NBA
- 20:33Speaker 1: tv for The, suns and that's actually opened up my
- 20:37Speaker 1: perspective of basketball off the, court of watching film almost
- 20:41Speaker 1: and so there's a lot of exciting things on the. Court,
- 20:44Speaker 1: hopefully you, KNOW i can be a part of the
- 20:46Speaker 1: three v Three olympics with THE usa, basketball SO i
- 20:48Speaker 1: Know i'll get a shot at. That and so there's
- 20:50Speaker 1: a lot of exciting things basketball. Wise but again it's
- 20:54Speaker 1: all nice and, shiny but you still have to put
- 20:56Speaker 1: in the work and you have to get. There and
- 20:58Speaker 1: so looking forward to, That i'd say off the, court, yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: yeah everything looks, nice but it's the journey of getting
- 21:06Speaker 1: there and all the ups and, downs and But i'm
- 21:09Speaker 1: looking forward to. It and then off the, COURT i
- 21:12Speaker 1: have TWO au. Teams they're Called Team Sophie, cunningham and
- 21:17Speaker 1: that is like one of my biggest things THAT i
- 21:19Speaker 1: love is BECAUSE i get to talk to these, GIRLS
- 21:21Speaker 1: i get to help mentor you get to go to
- 21:24Speaker 1: all these tournaments around the. Country, well let me, say
- 21:26Speaker 1: all these guys get to go to all these country
- 21:28Speaker 1: or all these tournaments around the, country and they get
- 21:31Speaker 1: all these gifts they get like, shoes they get, bags
- 21:34Speaker 1: they get all this gear and all that type of,
- 21:36Speaker 1: stuff and we just didn't like growing. UP i, know
- 21:39Speaker 1: like that was ten years ago for, me but we
- 21:41Speaker 1: just didn't get that. Stuff and So i'm An adidas.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Athlete i'm also A quest, athlete and NOW i get
- 21:48Speaker 1: to kind of collab with these really two big companies
- 21:50Speaker 1: and give it back to these girls who deserve, it
- 21:53Speaker 1: and SO i get really excited about. That and THEN
- 21:57Speaker 1: i have The Sophie Cunningham, classic which is a all
- 22:00Speaker 1: girls tournament pretty, much and we get to throw a
- 22:04Speaker 1: lot of cool people are. THERE espn is going to be.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Involved we get to talk to these, teams we get
- 22:10Speaker 1: to help mentor these, girls and it's a very, interactive
- 22:13Speaker 1: hands on experience for these young. Athletes so it's super,
- 22:16Speaker 1: exciting super, fun And i'm looking forward to it again this.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Year he touched on you, know women playing their best
- 22:23Speaker 3: basketball at age thirty two and. Older we've already Mentioned
- 22:27Speaker 3: Diana trasi And Britney. Griner what is it like for
- 22:30Speaker 3: you to play on a team with these two incredible.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Humans, gosh there's just like not a lot of words
- 22:37Speaker 1: to put into. It because they. Are diana is the
- 22:39Speaker 1: goat of THE wnba of women's basketball in, general and
- 22:43Speaker 1: so just to kind of get a little piece of
- 22:46Speaker 1: her mind and her mentorship has been. Unbelievable the way she,
- 22:49Speaker 1: thinks like her And kobe are on the same. Level
- 22:52Speaker 1: AND i always try to tell people that because everyone Knows,
- 22:55Speaker 1: kobe but she is the Woman, kobe and like they are,
- 22:58Speaker 1: crazy but they are so freaking smart at the same.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Time and then you Have beg who's the best post
- 23:03Speaker 1: player in the whole, world and you, know last year
- 23:06Speaker 1: was super tough for her, family for, her for, us
- 23:09Speaker 1: and just to kind of have her back and see
- 23:11Speaker 1: her smile and being able to play with one of the,
- 23:14Speaker 1: posts the best post players that ever go through women's,
- 23:17Speaker 1: basketball has also been super. Fun but my relationships with
- 23:21Speaker 1: both of them are so so. DIFFERENT bg is more,
- 23:24Speaker 1: Chill she's more like. Me she has a balance of
- 23:26Speaker 1: when she's done with, practice she's, done and then d you,
- 23:30Speaker 1: know she's always. Thinking she's always thinking how we can get,
- 23:32Speaker 1: better what she can do to grow her, game and
- 23:34Speaker 1: so just kind of having the balance of both of
- 23:36Speaker 1: them have been fantastic.
- 23:37Speaker 2: If you're comfortable talking about.
- 23:39Speaker 3: It i'd be so interested to know from the inside looking,
- 23:42Speaker 3: out like how just all OF i don't need to
- 23:46Speaker 3: go Into beg's. STORY i think everyone's familiar with it,
- 23:49Speaker 3: now but now that you're in, season how that has
- 23:51Speaker 3: impacted your team as you're kind of moving forward.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Here it is actually kind of hilarious because we've had
- 23:58Speaker 1: her back for a, While like we see her every single,
- 24:00Speaker 1: day but every time we play a new, team so
- 24:03Speaker 1: we have eleven teams that we go to their home,
- 24:06Speaker 1: gym and every single time it's a new homecoming FOR
- 24:08Speaker 1: vg and so it's like hilarious because it's like eleven,
- 24:12Speaker 1: times it's over and, over which it is so well,
- 24:14Speaker 1: Deserved like the w fans toually. Deserved they got behind,
- 24:17Speaker 1: her they got behind, us but it's just like funny
- 24:20Speaker 1: to us because we're, like, oh we haven't been, here
- 24:22Speaker 1: here we go. Again B and so she gets her,
- 24:24Speaker 1: standing ovation she gets her, way her moment of, fame
- 24:28Speaker 1: and it's just. Hilarious but to have her back and
- 24:31Speaker 1: just to see the support that not only the w gave,
- 24:35Speaker 1: us but THE nba men and women's soccer, leagues other,
- 24:38Speaker 1: sports and then people who just aren't in sports has
- 24:41Speaker 1: been absolutely. Unbelievable AND i know that people have their
- 24:45Speaker 1: different views about, it AND i get both sides of,
- 24:48Speaker 1: it BUT i think a lot of people only know
- 24:50Speaker 1: ten percent of the story and what really. Happened AND
- 24:53Speaker 1: i promise you that if they had a loved one
- 24:55Speaker 1: over there in that, situation that they would want them
- 24:57Speaker 1: home regardless. Too and SO i think it is a
- 24:59Speaker 1: great way to just show grace and love and to
- 25:03Speaker 1: kind of holds your leved ones closed because there's a
- 25:05Speaker 1: lot of stuff that people just don't.

- 29:18Speaker 3: talked about THE au Team Sophie cumming, hand The Sophie
- 29:21Speaker 3: Cunningham classic CAN i just, like stop you for a
- 29:24Speaker 3: second when you say stuff like, that like does it shake?
- 29:26Speaker 2: You are you, Like, holy isn't it?
- 29:28Speaker 1: Insane, no because it is so like if people actually knew,
- 29:34Speaker 1: me AND i promise, you my best friends are, like
- 29:36Speaker 1: if these kids just knew, you or like these fans
- 29:39Speaker 1: just knew, you they would think you were the biggest.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Work And i'm, LIKE i, know And i'm, LIKE i
- 29:42Speaker 1: don't try to hide, it LIKE i don't. Know and
- 29:45Speaker 1: that's like one of the first THINGS i tell, people
- 29:47Speaker 1: like when they are like, starstruck AND i that's weird,
- 29:50Speaker 1: enough that's weird to. Say but when they Are i'm just,
- 29:53Speaker 1: LIKE i promise, You i'm not that, Cool LIKE i,
- 29:55Speaker 1: swear you're probably way cooler than. Me and SO i
- 29:58Speaker 1: just always just try to greet people with hugs make
- 30:00Speaker 1: them feel comfortable BECAUSE i didn't have A wnba player
- 30:03Speaker 1: who was given back to us when we were. Younger
- 30:05Speaker 1: LIKE i just think it's so cool being from The
- 30:08Speaker 1: midwest and being able to like go back and give
- 30:10Speaker 1: back and show kids that even if it's not, basketball
- 30:13Speaker 1: to like dream big whatever is like setting your soul on,
- 30:16Speaker 1: fire go for. It and that's my biggest thing for.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Him who did you look up to when you were growing?
- 30:21Speaker 3: Up and who would you say maybe some of your
- 30:24Speaker 3: biggest mentors are, now.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Okay that is a great. QUESTION i just have always
- 30:29Speaker 1: been a super competitive, kid and so like when people
- 30:32Speaker 1: are like who did you look up? TO i was
- 30:34Speaker 1: just so dang. STUBBORN i was like no, one because
- 30:37Speaker 1: Like i'm going to be better than? Them i'm, like
- 30:38Speaker 1: why AM i like? That why AM i like? That
- 30:41Speaker 1: like be, nicer be? Better but IF i had to pick,
- 30:45Speaker 1: One i'd pick me a. Ham LIKE i THOUGHT i
- 30:47Speaker 1: was going to be a soccer. Player my sister had
- 30:51Speaker 1: the opportunity to play dual sport basketball and college basketball
- 30:54Speaker 1: and soccer in, college AND i actually did, Too AND
- 30:56Speaker 1: i always wish that we would have done, It LIKE
- 30:58Speaker 1: i always think that would have been so kind of
- 31:00Speaker 1: badass of, this but it's too. Much SO i Think
- 31:03Speaker 1: mayaham was probably a mentor because she was just a
- 31:06Speaker 1: badass woman and she PUT usa women's soccer on the,
- 31:10Speaker 1: map like she was just like the. It you. Know,
- 31:13Speaker 1: NOW i think, MENTORSHIP i don't have one specific, person
- 31:17Speaker 1: BUT i have a lot of people from from different,
- 31:21Speaker 1: Areas so LIKE i don't know if that made. Sense
- 31:24Speaker 1: SO i have like people for, SPORT i have people for.
- 31:26Speaker 1: LIFE i have people for my, finances for my mental,
- 31:29Speaker 1: health for my, diet for doing outdoorsy, stuff for doing
- 31:32Speaker 1: country stuff or doing city. Stuff LIKE i just like
- 31:35Speaker 1: the more THAT i get, OLDER i just think it
- 31:37Speaker 1: is so important to not just choose one, thing like
- 31:42Speaker 1: kind of get your hand in everything that you're passionate,
- 31:44Speaker 1: about like try to learn as much as. Possible AND
- 31:48Speaker 1: i think having a growth mindset in every little thing
- 31:50Speaker 1: just like helps you be a well rounded. Human SO
- 31:54Speaker 1: i don't know if that's the answer you're looking, for but.
- 31:56Speaker 3: That's kind OF i mean What i'm What i'm hearing
- 31:58Speaker 3: you say in this is you went from this place
- 32:00Speaker 3: where you were Like i'm not going to look up to,
- 32:01Speaker 3: anyone to now being someone who's so open to looking
- 32:07Speaker 3: up to others and having mentors and asking for. Advice
- 32:11Speaker 3: so would you say or can you articulate maybe like
- 32:14Speaker 3: a point where that changed for?
- 32:16Speaker 1: You? YEAH i think in COLLEGE i was just like
- 32:19Speaker 1: super competitive and LIKE i just wanted TO i feel
- 32:23Speaker 1: LIKE i just had so much to, Prove but like
- 32:25Speaker 1: for who for? What? Right LIKE, I, i, oh no
- 32:29Speaker 1: one anything like MY i think my mindset shifted WHEN
- 32:33Speaker 1: i stopped competing and being competitive and comparing myself to,
- 32:37Speaker 1: others and NOW i just like compare myself to, myself
- 32:40Speaker 1: LIKE i want to outdo, me Like i'm my biggest,
- 32:43Speaker 1: Competition LIKE i don't care who you put in front of.
- 32:45Speaker 1: ME i know everything about. MYSELF i know my good
- 32:48Speaker 1: AND i know my, bad And i'm my biggest. Competition
- 32:51Speaker 1: and SO i think that's when my mind shifted is
- 32:53Speaker 1: BECAUSE i stopped comparing myself to others AND i don't
- 32:56Speaker 1: even know how to explain, it Like i'm my biggest.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Competition and SO i think the older That i'm, GETTING
- 33:02Speaker 1: i just want to learn from successful, people LIKE i
- 33:05Speaker 1: want to learn what they did to get where they're.
- 33:07Speaker 1: AT i want to find true, happiness true, piece true,
- 33:10Speaker 1: joy LIKE i want to genuinely give back and help
- 33:12Speaker 1: people be genuinely happy and. Successful AND i think that
- 33:16Speaker 1: when you're just stuck in your own, way you're never
- 33:19Speaker 1: going to get. There and so that's WHY i try
- 33:21Speaker 1: to like learn and listen to as many people as
- 33:23Speaker 1: possible who are successful or WHERE i want to be
- 33:26Speaker 1: one day to see what they did and kind of
- 33:28Speaker 1: take multiple pieces from different people and kind of take
- 33:32Speaker 1: WHAT i want and make it.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Myself, yeah for, SURE i really resonate with.
- 33:36Speaker 3: That so for someone who may be listening to this
- 33:38Speaker 3: that really struggles with falling into the comparison, trap as
- 33:43Speaker 3: we love to call, it do you have any advice for?
- 33:45Speaker 1: Them? MAN i have been around the most famous people
- 33:50Speaker 1: you can, know people who have a lot of, money
- 33:53Speaker 1: people who might seem to have it, all and they
- 33:55Speaker 1: are some of the most unhappiest humans that you will ever.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Meet and it's sad BECAUSE i had a teammate who
- 34:04Speaker 1: is a very well known teammate and me as a
- 34:07Speaker 1: rookie making forty thousand. Dollars she came up to me
- 34:09Speaker 1: and she, goes how are you so happy and full of?
- 34:11Speaker 1: Life like What i'm, like give me your millions of
- 34:14Speaker 1: dollars And i'll be. Happy, like let's switch lives for a.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Second AND i just think that there are so many
- 34:20Speaker 1: things you can't put your your heart. Into two earthly.
- 34:24Speaker 1: THINGS i think for, ME i rely a lot on my,
- 34:26Speaker 1: faith and that's where my true joy and my my
- 34:30Speaker 1: identity truly comes from Is. God AND i think that
- 34:33Speaker 1: when you try to put your identity into, basketball into,
- 34:36Speaker 1: money into, fame into being prettier or nicer or skinnier
- 34:41Speaker 1: than all these other girls or even, Guys you're always
- 34:45Speaker 1: gonna feel. Empty it's like chasing the. Wind and so for,
- 34:48Speaker 1: ME i put my identity In christ AND i think
- 34:50Speaker 1: that's what really keeps me grounded and what makes me
- 34:54Speaker 1: be able to like truly be my Authentic haffy.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Self it's interesting for me That i'm going to ask
- 35:00Speaker 3: this question BECAUSE i don't have like a strong relationship
- 35:04Speaker 3: necessarily a strong religious, affiliation ALTHOUGH i was Raised. Jewish
- 35:08Speaker 3: so with being on the, road with kind of being
- 35:11Speaker 3: all over the place all the, time how do you
- 35:13Speaker 3: anchor yourself in that religion and what do you do
- 35:15Speaker 3: to kind of keep up with your?
- 35:16Speaker 1: Faith, Yeah AND i think that's a great point because
- 35:20Speaker 1: a lot of people don't have. Religion BUT i think for,
- 35:23Speaker 1: me it's like love conquers. All AND i think that
- 35:25Speaker 1: when you can like truly, love and when you say,
- 35:28Speaker 1: love everyone's always, like oh like love other, People no love,
- 35:31Speaker 1: yourself like love your. Flaws love what makes you unique
- 35:34Speaker 1: and you different because other people will be looking at
- 35:36Speaker 1: you and wish they had. That and SO i think for,
- 35:39Speaker 1: me you do travel all over the, place And i've
- 35:43Speaker 1: been here for two days And i'm about to leave
- 35:45Speaker 1: for six more, days, Right, so like in in season
- 35:48Speaker 1: is just. Crazy but for, ME i just try to
- 35:50Speaker 1: get a. ROUTINE i take My bible with me. Everywhere
- 35:53Speaker 1: SOMETIMES i read, it SOMETIMES i. Don't BUT i think
- 35:56Speaker 1: the biggest thing for me is be a, light like
- 35:59Speaker 1: shine your light wherever you are and just try to
- 36:01Speaker 1: be a positive influence BECAUSE i do think love and
- 36:04Speaker 1: you can just love people where they're at and meet
- 36:07Speaker 1: them where they're, at then that kind of show that
- 36:09Speaker 1: helps them love themselves as. Well and so it's, hard
- 36:13Speaker 1: especially when when you are on this crazy schedule like we,
- 36:16Speaker 1: are it is hard to kind of have a routine
- 36:18Speaker 1: and find a community of people that might have the
- 36:21Speaker 1: same beliefs as you or have the same morals as.
- 36:24Speaker 1: You at the end of the, DAY i think when
- 36:26Speaker 1: you can just love, people that's the biggest.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Thing, yeah you, know when you said like when you
- 36:30Speaker 3: can get to a place where you just meet yourself
- 36:32Speaker 3: with where you're, at it rings to me or it
- 36:35Speaker 3: makes me think about you, know coming of age right
- 36:38Speaker 3: and getting to this point where it's so easy during
- 36:41Speaker 3: your teenage years, Too like we were talking about play
- 36:43Speaker 3: that comparison game and judge yourself so. Harshly do you
- 36:47Speaker 3: remember when you personally turn that corner and really just
- 36:51Speaker 3: embraced what it was that you had to offer instead
- 36:54Speaker 3: of judging.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Yourself oh, Gosh i'm laughing Because i'm such a late,
- 36:59Speaker 1: Blimmer LIKE i promise, You i'm still like trying to glow.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Up you know what the girls, says like glow up
- 37:05Speaker 1: still because oh my, God i'm funny sack Because i'm
- 37:08Speaker 1: still like kyd of like become the you, know the
- 37:12Speaker 1: best version of. Yourself. Whatever BUT i think in high
- 37:16Speaker 1: school we just had a good group of boys and
- 37:18Speaker 1: girls that there wasn't a lot of. Comparison but you
- 37:22Speaker 1: do find yourself in those times of as an athlete
- 37:25Speaker 1: and in high school when like you're going through the
- 37:28Speaker 1: weird puberty, age like you you just look, weird, Right
- 37:31Speaker 1: like everyone goes through it and it's just like part of.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Life BUT i did find myself sometimes like, man LIKE
- 37:37Speaker 1: i WISH i was, Skinnier like why isn't my hair, longer?
- 37:40Speaker 1: Thicker like why why is her skin way clearer than?
- 37:44Speaker 1: Mine you know WHAT i? Mean like you do find
- 37:46Speaker 1: yourself going through those, things and it's, like wait a,
- 37:48Speaker 1: second IF i was that petite or IF i was that,
- 37:51Speaker 1: Skinny i'd be get my butt kicked on the basketball,
- 37:54Speaker 1: court LIKE i would not be WHO i was created to.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Be and SO i think for, me it's just finding
- 38:00Speaker 1: the strength within yourself and really like coming to terms
- 38:02Speaker 1: and like enjoying who you are and like whatever makes
- 38:06Speaker 1: you weird or different from everyone, else like that's what's,
- 38:09Speaker 1: cool that's what attracts people to. You and SO i
- 38:11Speaker 1: think just like embracing that and being confident and finding
- 38:15Speaker 1: a really small good group of people to like love
- 38:18Speaker 1: you and support you regardless is. Huge you're too.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Huge aside from the fact that you say you're still
- 38:24Speaker 3: in your glow up, era ALTHOUGH i would, say like
- 38:27Speaker 3: you are, glowing what else makes you?
- 38:30Speaker 2: Unique instellar and different from everybody? Else?
- 38:34Speaker 1: Oh, MAN i don't know IF i would use all those,
- 38:37Speaker 1: terms BUT i just don't try to fit in. Anymore
- 38:41Speaker 1: AND i think that's so important FOR i think young
- 38:44Speaker 1: guys to, hear BECAUSE i think young athletes in, general
- 38:47Speaker 1: male or, female you miss out on a lot of
- 38:51Speaker 1: a lot of. Stuff you miss out on prom you
- 38:54Speaker 1: missed out on school. Dances you don't maybe get to
- 38:57Speaker 1: go hang out or go to the parties or or
- 39:00Speaker 1: whatever you want to call it out with all your
- 39:02Speaker 1: people because you have games OR i remember au, BALL
- 39:05Speaker 1: i wasn't home all. SUMMER i was home for three
- 39:08Speaker 1: days my junior year of. Summer so you missed out
- 39:11Speaker 1: on a. Bunch but with great things comes with great.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Sacrifice AND i think that that's something THAT i just
- 39:17Speaker 1: had to like hang my hat. On is Like i'm
- 39:19Speaker 1: putting in the work for something, greater AND i might
- 39:21Speaker 1: not see the benefits of it, now but in six,
- 39:24Speaker 1: years When i'm THE wnba And i'm ON espn AND
- 39:27Speaker 1: i get to do these cool, Things i'll know that
- 39:29Speaker 1: it's worth. It and so for, me sometimes you have
- 39:33Speaker 1: to think big picture and then sometimes you have to
- 39:35Speaker 1: think small. Picture and SO i don't. KNOW i just
- 39:38Speaker 1: try not to fit. ANYMORE i think WHEN i laugh
- 39:42Speaker 1: at on the, COURT i smile a lot on the.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Court i'm feisty on the, court and sometimes that gets
- 39:46Speaker 1: me in, trouble but that's what makes me, me and
- 39:48Speaker 1: that's why the fans gather around. Me that's WHY i
- 39:51Speaker 1: love the, fans because they're all a lot more like
- 39:53Speaker 1: than the.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Things so what would you say one of the most
- 39:56Speaker 3: difficult sacrifices you've had to make in your come up
- 40:00Speaker 3: In sport has been.
- 40:03Speaker 1: A thousand thousand percent being away from my family and.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Friends LIKE i get to do really cool, things you,
- 40:12Speaker 1: know you get to plan in all these cool, stadiums
- 40:14Speaker 1: you get to go to these cool, cities you get
- 40:17Speaker 1: invited to full, Events yet you don't get to ever
- 40:20Speaker 1: have your best friends coming along with. You you don't
- 40:22Speaker 1: get to have your parents come along with. You And
- 40:25Speaker 1: i'm someone WHO i got really blessed with a great
- 40:27Speaker 1: family and a really good group of, friends AND i
- 40:30Speaker 1: missed them like. Crazy and so IF i could move
- 40:32Speaker 1: all them out, here it would be a million times
- 40:35Speaker 1: better BECAUSE i just know that people would out here
- 40:37Speaker 1: In phoenix would fall in love with my family friends
- 40:39Speaker 1: just kind of how they fell in love with. Me
- 40:41Speaker 1: BUT i think just being away from home and missing
- 40:44Speaker 1: out on, weddings missing out on your close friends having,
- 40:47Speaker 1: kids missing out on family, dinners friends hanging, out going
- 40:52Speaker 1: to the, lake like it is the small things and
- 40:55Speaker 1: big things that it kind of. Sucks but then, again
- 40:59Speaker 1: you know you can't live this lifestyle, forever so you
- 41:01Speaker 1: have to embrace it and put your best bet forward.
- 41:03Speaker 3: And put your best foot. Forward how often would you
- 41:05Speaker 3: say that you get back to where you grew.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Up as much as. Possible and so IF i have
- 41:10Speaker 1: a couple of days, Off i'm going back. Home and
- 41:13Speaker 1: SOMETIMES i WISH i would go To cabo and just hang.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Out BUT i know that going back home and see
- 41:18Speaker 1: my friends and family is going to fill my cup
- 41:20Speaker 1: up a lot more than you, know probably tequila on
- 41:23Speaker 1: the beach.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Heard, Heard, YEAH i, mean speaking of killing up your.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Cup what else do you do to take care Of? Sophie,
- 41:34Speaker 3: YEAH i.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Make SURE i, KNOW i really do live a very
- 41:39Speaker 1: like kind of simple, life like to fill my cup
- 41:42Speaker 1: up and to make Sure i'm in a good mental.
- 41:43Speaker 1: ZONE i need to get to the. POOL i need
- 41:45Speaker 1: to get a, TAN i need to maybe go to
- 41:47Speaker 1: the hair slan make sure my hair is a little,
- 41:49Speaker 1: blonder because if you look, good you play. Good AND
- 41:52Speaker 1: i do need to get my nails. Done already showed you.
- 41:54Speaker 1: That but outside of, THAT i think one of the
- 41:58Speaker 1: other things that really makes me feel good is helping
- 42:02Speaker 1: out with The ronald McDonald, house helping out with The
- 42:05Speaker 1: boys And Girls, club like giving back The Children's hospital
- 42:09Speaker 1: is a, huge big thing THAT i love to. Do
- 42:12Speaker 1: and it's just like give to others that maybe things
- 42:15Speaker 1: that they won't be able to do when they're older
- 42:17Speaker 1: because of difficulties that they had to go through THAT
- 42:20Speaker 1: i never got to go through or had to go,
- 42:22Speaker 1: THROUGH i should. Say and SO i think giving back
- 42:25Speaker 1: is really what helps my heart grow fonder and helps
- 42:29Speaker 1: me really enjoy Where i'm, at because sometimes it is
- 42:32Speaker 1: easy to, complain it's easy to kind of get caught
- 42:34Speaker 1: up in the. Grind it's easy to you, know kind
- 42:38Speaker 1: of like sometimes because you do get you do miss
- 42:41Speaker 1: out on so, much especially during the, summertime and you
- 42:43Speaker 1: get a lot of. Fomo it's, like what CAN i
- 42:45Speaker 1: do to help someone else feel? Good and then that's
- 42:47Speaker 1: kind of what helps me feel.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Good, Yeah and especially in a sport or so, often
- 42:51Speaker 3: like y'all are traveling all over the place and even
- 42:53Speaker 3: in the off season going, overseas so you, know it's
- 42:57Speaker 3: something that so many, athletes regardless of, sport are are
- 43:00Speaker 3: navigating all the.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Time, absolutely AND i think that's something a lot of
- 43:04Speaker 1: people don't, know IS wnba. Players we're here from you,
- 43:08Speaker 1: know Early may until Mid october and then you're shipped off.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Overseas you're In, turkey used to Be, russia anywhere In
- 43:17Speaker 1: europe And, australia and you're there for solid seven. Months
- 43:21Speaker 1: and so that's where we make our. Money that's where it's,
- 43:24Speaker 1: crazy because THE wnba is like the most elite level,
- 43:26Speaker 1: basketball but you get paid the, worst and so that's
- 43:29Speaker 1: why you have to go overseas in order to you,
- 43:31Speaker 1: know kind of to make your.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Money how has that experience been for you traveling? Overseas,
- 43:38Speaker 2: YEAH i.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Am the wrong person to ask those wildvan it is
- 43:42Speaker 1: what it. IS i think my rookie YEAR i went
- 43:45Speaker 1: over To australia absolutely, fantastic loved, it loved the. Culture
- 43:49Speaker 1: my sister actually came with. Me we had like the
- 43:52Speaker 1: time of our. Lives and THEN covid. Happened and then
- 43:57Speaker 1: my third YEAR i went over To france how to
- 44:01Speaker 1: love the. Girls how a good experience got, injured and
- 44:04Speaker 1: once you get injured over, there they don't want anything
- 44:06Speaker 1: to do with, yet and so my good experience turned
- 44:09Speaker 1: bad really. Quick and then after THAT i was like,
- 44:13Speaker 1: Done LIKE i just it just wasn't my. THING i don't,
- 44:17Speaker 1: KNOW i just feel LIKE i wanted to. TRAIN i
- 44:19Speaker 1: wanted to be. Home my grandparents are getting, older you,
- 44:21Speaker 1: know and they have a huge family, farm and SO
- 44:24Speaker 1: i wanted to help out there as much as. Possible
- 44:26Speaker 1: and then last, year WHEN i just kind of hurt
- 44:29Speaker 1: my other, ELBOW i just decided to stay out here In,
- 44:32Speaker 1: arizona AND i kind of got into broadcasting AND i
- 44:35Speaker 1: absolutely loved, it and So i'm going to probably be
- 44:37Speaker 1: doing that and training the off season from here on.
- 44:40Speaker 2: OUT i love. THAT i love.
- 44:42Speaker 3: That just for, context can you give us some examples
- 44:44Speaker 3: of things that you are doing on the.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Farm oh my.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Gosh, GIRL i should have brought you out there and
- 44:51Speaker 1: we could have done it. Firsthand but, okay so it
- 44:56Speaker 1: depends on the. Season so we have planting and harvesting,
- 45:01Speaker 1: season and so planting, season like you're out in the
- 45:03Speaker 1: field until like six, am excuse, me six am until you,
- 45:08Speaker 1: know probably around seven whenever it gets. Dark so not.
- 45:11Speaker 1: Bad but my first, year like legit farming farming was DURING,
- 45:16Speaker 1: covid and like we just to go out there just
- 45:18Speaker 1: like for you, know gigs and whatnot and not like
- 45:21Speaker 1: really do. Anything, like, oh we were on the farm
- 45:23Speaker 1: helping our paullpall but DURING. Covid we were actually like,
- 45:26Speaker 1: farming and we had to get up at like five
- 45:28Speaker 1: am and to not go to sleep until one. Am
- 45:31Speaker 1: and my grandpa is like seventy nine years old doing,
- 45:34Speaker 1: this you, know since he was six years, Old And i'm,
- 45:36Speaker 1: LIKE i don't, know he's way stronger than, me just
- 45:39Speaker 1: like he just has A i don't. Know farmers are
- 45:42Speaker 1: just smart because they have to know a little bit
- 45:43Speaker 1: about the, economy the, weather plant like all that type of.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Stuff AND i JUST i just didn't realize how hard it.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Was AND i will never be a farmer.
- 45:52Speaker 3: Again just a little insight into what farming looks like
- 45:58Speaker 3: for THE wnbash well right, NOW i know we talked
- 46:04Speaker 3: a little bit about social media And instagram. Before you've
- 46:07Speaker 3: got something like one hundred and eighteen thousand followers On.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Instagram when they come to your, page they see A wnba,
- 46:15Speaker 3: player they see An adidas. Athlete what you look in the?
- 46:19Speaker 3: Mirror what is it that you see looking back at?
- 46:22Speaker 1: YOU i LOVE i love that. Question WHEN i look
- 46:26Speaker 1: at myself in the. Mirror i'm proud of Everything i've been,
- 46:29Speaker 1: through But i'm not satisfied LIKE i want. TO i
- 46:33Speaker 1: just have so many goals THAT i haven't. Accomplished But
- 46:35Speaker 1: i'm also just so grateful and so happy with Where i'm.
- 46:38Speaker 1: At and, then LIKE i, said it's not always, easy
- 46:41Speaker 1: and there's hard, days there's things that just don't go my.
- 46:44Speaker 1: WAY i don't feel like it's, Fair but at the
- 46:46Speaker 1: end of the, Day i'm very, Blessed i'm very, grateful
- 46:49Speaker 1: And i'm just here to give. Back and SO i
- 46:51Speaker 1: hope when people come to my page they feel a
- 46:52Speaker 1: sense of, happiness they feel like they belong. There WHEN
- 46:55Speaker 1: i look in the, MIRROR i see a lot of.

- 48:41Speaker 1: know fifty years, Right, LIKE i don't want to retire anytime,
- 48:44Speaker 1: soon BUT i do think the broadcasting area is kind
- 48:48Speaker 1: of WHERE i want to, go and so just trying
- 48:50Speaker 1: to get better at. That it's a lot harder than it.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Looks and to be, HONEST i tried starting a podcast
- 48:55Speaker 1: and that's hard, too like being flowy and getting your
- 48:58Speaker 1: questions on car and doing all, that like you do
- 49:01Speaker 1: a fantastic, job and it's a lot harder than people
- 49:03Speaker 1: think it.

- 49:12Speaker 2: You sophie there A.
- 49:13Speaker 3: Galsi all, right, girl well right now you have an
- 49:18Speaker 3: opportunity to offer yourself a piece of.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Advice let's go. Back you talked about that rut that
- 49:23Speaker 2: you were in not all that long. Ago you knowing
- 49:26Speaker 2: what you.
- 49:26Speaker 3: Know now you have an opportunity to offer yourself a
- 49:29Speaker 3: piece of.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Advice going through a period where you're just.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Not satisfied with the work that you're putting, out what
- 49:36Speaker 3: do you tell yourself during that hurdle.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Moment for, Me i'm just stubborn AND i don't have,
- 49:43Speaker 1: patience and that's something THAT i KNOW i need to work,
- 49:45Speaker 1: on like everyone knows. That but for, me even Though
- 49:48Speaker 1: i'm frustrated and, annoyed my piece of advice is still
- 49:51Speaker 1: put in the, work even if the work is. Ugly
- 49:54Speaker 1: even if you know you're in the gym and you're
- 49:56Speaker 1: not making your, shots at least you're in. There at
- 49:58Speaker 1: least you're like putting in the. WORK i do feel
- 50:01Speaker 1: like that if you are the hardest worker and you
- 50:05Speaker 1: genuinely want to get better and put in that. Work
- 50:09Speaker 1: it's not always, fun but you have, to then the
- 50:12Speaker 1: ball won't lie and you're not gonna be stuck in
- 50:14Speaker 1: a rep. Forever AND i think that's the biggest advice
- 50:16Speaker 1: that they gave me at the. Time they were like
- 50:18Speaker 1: my mentors were like laughing at me BECAUSE i knew
- 50:20Speaker 1: how frustrated and they're, like, girl this happens to. Everyone
- 50:23Speaker 1: Like i'm, Like i'm gonna like stay like this for
- 50:25Speaker 1: like ever Because i'm just, drama you. Know and they're, like,
- 50:28Speaker 1: no like this happens to. Everyone just keep putting in the,
- 50:30Speaker 1: work like you're, Fine it's not gonna last. Forever AND
- 50:33Speaker 1: i think that's the biggest piece of advice is don't
- 50:35Speaker 1: get too.
- 50:35Speaker 3: High don't get too, high don't get too. Low Sophie
