- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Monday, it's the 11th of
- 0:16May, it's the start of a new week and you, you clever thing,
- 0:19you have invited me into the beginning of your week so that
- 0:22we can continue on our journey in God's word.
- 0:26That's not a journey through God's word, but a journey in
- 0:30God's word. We are not trying to get from
- 0:31one end to the other. We our goal is just to spend
- 0:35time in God's Word, letting the rhythm punctuate our day, let it
- 0:40colour our lens, let it become the foundation upon which we
- 0:45live and breathe and move. What a beautiful thing, friends.
- 0:49And this week is our last week that we will spend in the book
- 0:53of Joshua. Next week.
- 0:54We'll finish off the very last chapter and then move on.
- 0:57But this is the last week and we have given all the land to all
- 1:01the different tribes. And so now we're talking about
- 1:04other things that will be happening in this promised land
- 1:07that might not be typical use of land, but this is what the use
- 1:12of that land will look like under God's reign and God's
- 1:15plan. So let's dive in and continue
- 1:17this journey, shall we? As we read together Joshua
- 1:21chapter 20, the Lord said to Joshua, Now
- 1:34tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge.
- 1:38As I instructed Moses, anyone who kills another person
- 1:42accidentally and unintentionally can run to one of these cities.
- 1:47They will be places of refuge from relatives seeking revenge
- 1:51for the person who was killed. Upon reaching one of these
- 1:54cities, the one who caused the death will appear before the
- 1:57elders at the city gate and present his case.
- 2:01They must allow him to enter the city and give him a place to
- 2:04live among them. If the relatives of the victim
- 2:08come to avenge the killing, the leaders must not release the
- 2:11Slayer to them, for he killed the other person unintentionally
- 2:15and without previous hostility. But the Slayer must stay in that
- 2:19city and be tried by the local assembly, which will render A
- 2:23judgement, and he must continue to live in that city until the
- 2:27death of the high priest who was in office at the time of the
- 2:31accident. After that he is free to return
- 2:34to his own home in the town from which he fled.
- 2:38The following cities were designated as cities of refuge.
- 2:42Kadesh of Galilee in the Hill Country of Naftali, Shechem in
- 2:47the Hill Country of Ephraim and Kiriath ABBA, that is, Hebron in
- 2:52the Hill Country of Judah on the east side of the Jordan River
- 2:56across from Jericho. The following cities were
- 2:59designated Beza in the wilderness plain of the tribe of
- 3:03Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the territory of the tribe of Gad,
- 3:08and Golan in Bashan in the land of the tribe of Manasseh.
- 3:13These cities were set apart for all the Israelites as well as
- 3:17the foreigners living among them.
- 3:19Anyone who accidentally killed another person could take refuge
- 3:23in one of these cities. In this way, they could escape
- 3:27being killed in revenge prior to standing trial before the local
- 3:31assembly. Our Lord, you are a thorough God
- 3:45and you think of everything, and as you set up this place to be
- 3:51the land of your gift to your people, you want to make sure
- 3:55that your people are cared for and that if an accident happens
- 3:58that there is a space that people can be safe so they don't
- 4:02have vengeance enacted upon them before they can be tried.
- 4:08All right, Lord, we see so clearly that you are a just God.
- 4:12You are a God of order and a God of structure.
- 4:15We thank you for creating a world that follows an orderly
- 4:20pattern. Even at the moment as we look in
- 4:22the news, it doesn't seem to be orderly.
- 4:24It seems to be completely out of hand with things kind of
- 4:28stretching into new territory in so many different ways that are
- 4:31not good. But Lord, we rest in the
- 4:34knowledge that ultimately you are supreme, you and your
- 4:39ordered way of being. And in that new order that Jesus
- 4:42has brought, we are loved and forgiven people, and we thank
- 4:48you that that is utterly dependable.
- 4:51So we just praise you and lift you up and pray all of these
- 4:56things in that mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
