- 0:27Speaker 2: Andrew de Checko here, and you're listening to the Pro
- 0:30Speaker 2: Football Report presented by BCWSA. All right here on fourteen
- 0:35Speaker 2: ninety WBCB and one oh seven point three FM, seen
- 0:40Speaker 2: live at wbcbsports dot com. We are back in Marlton,
- 0:45Speaker 2: New Jersey, at Chickies and Pets. It is a packed house,
- 0:49Speaker 2: as it always is, Andrew de Checko, as everybody is
- 0:51Speaker 2: here to see the Pro Football Report, and probably as
- 0:55Speaker 2: we see a few I see a few younglings of Medelos.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I think people are still drowt owing, perhaps in their sorrows,
- 1:02Speaker 2: as the Eagles are not in the playoffs, as we
- 1:04Speaker 2: enter conference championship weekend in the NFL. And by the way,
- 1:09Speaker 2: there's a huge snowstorm headed this way this weekend, apparently Saturday,
- 1:13Speaker 2: I think, right Saturday into Sunday. Can you imagine if
- 1:17Speaker 2: things had worked out the way the Eagles wanted it to.
- 1:20Speaker 2: We could have had a conference championship blizzard Sunday.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:23Speaker 4: By the way, Jeff, I always wanted to ask you
- 1:25Speaker 4: this because for me, when the season ends so abruptly
- 1:28Speaker 4: as it does as a beat reporter, you gets so
- 1:31Speaker 4: used to the routine and writing stories and doing podcasts
- 1:35Speaker 4: and all those things the day to day.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Do you ever have that empty feeling like what now?
- 1:39Speaker 4: Even though we know that there's draft and all this
- 1:42Speaker 4: other stuff that follows, it's just a weird feeling.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It is a strange feeling. I guess we had it
- 1:46Speaker 2: a couple of years ago when they had the slide
- 1:49Speaker 2: and then lost in the first round, But then there
- 1:51Speaker 2: was so much more I felt at the time. But
- 1:53Speaker 2: there's a lot going on now. There is a search
- 1:56Speaker 2: for an offensive coordinator. We're gonna talk about that. We've
- 1:59Speaker 2: got to chat about your catching up with former Eagles
- 2:03Speaker 2: offensive coordinator Marty morning Wegg and his thought on the
- 2:07Speaker 2: state of the offense, play callers, the importance between that
- 2:11Speaker 2: person and the quarterback, and then we're gonna get into
- 2:14Speaker 2: some other Eagles unresolved questions headed into the offseason. I
- 2:19Speaker 2: feel like offensive coordinator has taken such a so much
- 2:24Speaker 2: of the space and the storylines, and deservedly so that
- 2:28Speaker 2: we forget that there's a lot of other things going on,
- 2:30Speaker 2: including maybe losing a very key defensive assistant under Vic Fangio.
- 2:36Speaker 2: That is all getting kind of not swept under the rug,
- 2:39Speaker 2: but overshadowed.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yeah, we should probably talk about that now before it
- 2:42Speaker 4: gets lost in the lost and the sauce here. But
- 2:45Speaker 4: Christian Parker, I've been very vocal about how much I
- 2:50Speaker 4: respect and how much he's respected in that building and
- 2:52Speaker 4: around the NFL. Really talking about a thirty four year
- 2:55Speaker 4: old coach Jeff that as soon as he got to Philadelphia,
- 2:59Speaker 4: he conducted him like a defensive coordinator, and talking to
- 3:02Speaker 4: a lot of different players, they always talk about his
- 3:05Speaker 4: ability to relate. He's only thirty four years old, so
- 3:09Speaker 4: you have a group of young players a Dori Jackson
- 3:11Speaker 4: was the only player that was close to Parker and age.
- 3:14Speaker 4: But he's able to relate to those guys and convey
- 3:17Speaker 4: his messaging and his teaching in a way that it's
- 3:19Speaker 4: going to be easily absorbed and digested. And I think
- 3:22Speaker 4: his focus on fundamentals and explaining the why behind his
- 3:26Speaker 4: ideologies goes a long way, and it's not surprising to me.
- 3:30Speaker 4: When he was brought in, it felt to me like
- 3:32Speaker 4: they were renting him more so than he would be
- 3:34Speaker 4: a mainstay.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah. And the fact that he is interviewed not only
- 3:38Speaker 2: with the Dallas Cowboys to be their defensive coordinator, but
- 3:41Speaker 2: also the Green Bay Packers means right now, if he
- 3:46Speaker 2: gets one of these jobs, he is not only either
- 3:48Speaker 2: in the conference, but maybe in the division and with
- 3:51Speaker 2: the division rivals.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:53Speaker 4: And one thing that one of the many things that
- 3:55Speaker 4: he's well versed in that any prospective team should be
- 3:59Speaker 4: intrigued by is his track record of development. Whether or
- 4:02Speaker 4: not it's Quinnon, Mitchell, Cooper Dejeen. They got the best
- 4:05Speaker 4: season out of Sleigh in twenty twenty four. Jay Kwan McMillan,
- 4:08Speaker 4: who had a heck of an interception the other night,
- 4:11Speaker 4: is another player, undrafted free agent in twenty twenty two,
- 4:15Speaker 4: was under Parker for twenty two and twenty three, and
- 4:17Speaker 4: I thought he really is starting to come into his
- 4:19Speaker 4: own a little bit as a nickel defender for the Broncos.
- 4:22Speaker 4: So an extensive track record of development in such a
- 4:25Speaker 4: short coaching career thus.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Far, And don't forget Patrick, certain I believe was there
- 4:30Speaker 2: the year he was there.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right, but he was already billed as this
- 4:34Speaker 4: preeminent corner. But to your point, Parker has done a
- 4:37Speaker 4: nice did a nice job in helping him reach another level.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean you could say the same about Quinnon
- 4:42Speaker 2: Mitchell already guy first round but reached potential under Christian Parker.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And Riley Moss another guy that was coached under Christian.
- 4:52Speaker 3: I don't have twenty three. Was he drafted in twenty three?
- 4:56Speaker 2: That was his first year he was? Yes, Yeah, absolutely,
- 4:59Speaker 2: So those guys spend a year under Christian Parker before
- 5:02Speaker 2: Christian Parker wound up moving on to Philadelphia. And honestly, Andrew,
- 5:06Speaker 2: if you think about it, this all folds in also
- 5:09Speaker 2: to the coordinator search because Christian Parker's getting interviews, but
- 5:13Speaker 2: there could be more motion going on. You have a
- 5:18Speaker 2: handful of head coaching jobs open right now, Okay, you
- 5:21Speaker 2: have some that are filled that still haven't found their coordinators.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Like John Harb was about to start interviewing coach as
- 5:27Speaker 2: he said that today at his press conference. So you
- 5:29Speaker 2: could have guys that we're not even maybe a Clint
- 5:31Speaker 2: Hurt for example, the defensive line coach who goes somewhere
- 5:35Speaker 2: once a team figures out who it's head coach is
- 5:38Speaker 2: going to be, and then that guy has got to
- 5:39Speaker 2: start putting together a staff. And let me remind you
- 5:43Speaker 2: today is January twentieth. By this time five years ago,
- 5:48Speaker 2: Nick Sioriani was already the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 5:52Speaker 2: By this time thirteen years ago, Chip Kelly was already
- 5:57Speaker 2: coaching the Eagles after first spurning them and then coming back.
- 6:02Speaker 2: So even though the season itself is a week longer, Okay,
- 6:06Speaker 2: that's why we're already at January twentieth. The fact that
- 6:09Speaker 2: there are so many openings, this thing with the offensive coordinator,
- 6:13Speaker 2: with Parker, with anybody else, it could be days more
- 6:16Speaker 2: before you actually see the full motion of the NFL
- 6:19Speaker 2: take place.
- 6:20Speaker 4: And here's a conversation that I wanted to have with you, Jeff,
- 6:23Speaker 4: because I saw a lot of this and there's some deliberation.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Is this job, the Eagles offensive coordinator job? Is that
- 6:32Speaker 4: or should that be viewed as desirable? There's two ways
- 6:35Speaker 4: of looking at it. The first way of looking at
- 6:37Speaker 4: it is it's a high profile job. There's a lot
- 6:41Speaker 4: of primetime games. You look at Shane steich In, you
- 6:43Speaker 4: look at Kellen Moore. They were able to advance their
- 6:46Speaker 4: careers and become head coaches. You also have a quarterback
- 6:49Speaker 4: in jaywhen Hurts, who is cerebral. He has a winning
- 6:51Speaker 4: DNA and he's gonna do whatever it takes to win.
- 6:55Speaker 4: All good things. But then there's the other side of things.
- 6:58Speaker 4: You don't know what the health status is of your
- 6:59Speaker 4: offense line AJ Brown. Is he remaining in Philadelphia or
- 7:03Speaker 4: is he going elsewhere? Will they have full autonomy of
- 7:06Speaker 4: their offense, complete autonomy and be able to run things
- 7:09Speaker 4: through their vision. Those are all fair questions to have.
- 7:12Speaker 4: And I think when you look at this job, that's
- 7:14Speaker 4: kind of how I'm looking at it. I'm looking at
- 7:15Speaker 4: it from both sides.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I think there are very few perfect situations for a
- 7:20Speaker 2: person who needs a job. Right you're unemployed because you
- 7:23Speaker 2: got fired, or you're hired from a different team and
- 7:27Speaker 2: now you're promoted to a job you haven't done before.
- 7:29Speaker 2: You are a pass game coordinator and now you're an
- 7:32Speaker 2: offensive coordinator right for another team who's personnel you're not
- 7:36Speaker 2: familiar with. People take jobs because they want the opportunity,
- 7:41Speaker 2: so if we just break it down from an opportunity standpoint,
- 7:45Speaker 2: do the Eagles present an opportunity? A resounding yes.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 7:50Speaker 2: You get to walk into a Super Bowl champion quarterback
- 7:53Speaker 2: first of all, but forget that, right, you get to
- 7:55Speaker 2: walk into an organization with a history of excellent draft
- 7:59Speaker 2: and development stability at the top. There have been to
- 8:02Speaker 2: two of the last four Super Bowls, right, they've won
- 8:05Speaker 2: one Super Bowl champion quarterback offensive line that is historically elite.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Well we need to see about that, but historically a
- 8:12Speaker 4: historically historically elite.
- 8:14Speaker 2: So you walk into a great situation apps from a
- 8:17Speaker 2: personnel standpoint, But the question you're asking is very pertinent.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Is it an attractive job for every type of coordinator
- 8:26Speaker 2: to come in? And to me, we have to answer
- 8:29Speaker 2: a question first before we ask that question. And the
- 8:31Speaker 2: question we have to answer, or what we need to know,
- 8:34Speaker 2: is are the Eagles looking to just remodel what they
- 8:42Speaker 2: already have? Mean like you got a kitchen, right, you
- 8:44Speaker 2: got an old ten year old refrigerator, ten year old stove,
- 8:48Speaker 2: twelve year old st you might want the newer appliances
- 8:51Speaker 2: or are they gutting the entire kitchen like you see
- 8:55Speaker 2: on HGTV. Are you ripping out the cabinets, Are you
- 8:58Speaker 2: ripping out the island if you got one of those?
- 9:00Speaker 2: Are you ripping out your sink and replacing everything? And
- 9:03Speaker 2: I know that's an extreme analogy, but I think if
- 9:06Speaker 2: you're doing that, there are certain coordinators who are better
- 9:10Speaker 2: than others. If you're trying to maintain your philosophy and
- 9:14Speaker 2: just improve it, there are certain coordinators that are better
- 9:18Speaker 2: than others.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Yeah, that's well said, and I think from at least
- 9:22Speaker 4: from my vantage point, the Eagles have been very successful
- 9:25Speaker 4: running a certain style of offense.
- 9:27Speaker 3: There's no disputing that.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Heck, they won a Super Bowl doing so, and we're
- 9:30Speaker 4: in another Super Bowl.
- 9:32Speaker 3: But the league catches up.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Then this is a league in which you have thirty
- 9:36Speaker 4: one other teams fixating on how to stop the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 9:39Speaker 4: And they went out this season and they realized, we
- 9:42Speaker 4: got to stop Saquon Barkley and try to make Philadelphia
- 9:44Speaker 4: more one dimensional. That's the simplistic viewable. And so there
- 9:49Speaker 4: are a lot of limitations that I think are hindering
- 9:51Speaker 4: this offense from reaching another level. When you hear Howie
- 9:54Speaker 4: Roseman and Nick Sirianni talking about the need to evolve.
- 9:58Speaker 4: For me, I think you have to move further and
- 10:00Speaker 4: further away and distance yourself from the previous scheme the run,
- 10:04Speaker 4: heavy ball, security conscious, low volume passing attack, and try
- 10:08Speaker 4: to find.
- 10:08Speaker 3: A way to make prominently Jalen.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Hurts comfortable, becoming uncomfortable doing things and pushing yourself to
- 10:16Speaker 4: limits that you haven't been pushed before and being challenged.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I think you're correct. I think the Eagles need to not, though,
- 10:24Speaker 2: go from one extreme to another. And so when you
- 10:26Speaker 2: talk about really good coordinators, do I think Mike McDaniel
- 10:30Speaker 2: would be an amazing offensive coordinator wherever he goes. Yes.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Do I think that if he comes to the Eagles
- 10:37Speaker 2: they and radically redesigns their offense, that this thing is
- 10:40Speaker 2: going to hit the ground running from week one? No,
- 10:43Speaker 2: I don't. You have to change your personnel. You have
- 10:46Speaker 2: to change the way you block offensively in the run game.
- 10:49Speaker 2: You have a fullback now who is going to be
- 10:53Speaker 2: used in a way the Eagles haven't before. You are
- 10:55Speaker 2: going to have a West Coast pass offense that is
- 10:57Speaker 2: designed to use every blade of on the field in
- 11:01Speaker 2: a way the Eagles have not used before. So to me,
- 11:04Speaker 2: that's the analogy of just gutting the entire kitchen and
- 11:08Speaker 2: starting over. But you also have a general manager and
- 11:11Speaker 2: an owner who are in win now mode. And they're
- 11:14Speaker 2: progressive thinking, right, but they're in win now mode. So
- 11:17Speaker 2: what happens if you're trying to completely radically redesign your
- 11:21Speaker 2: offense on the fly, and that might take more than
- 11:24Speaker 2: a year. It might take an adjustment, which is a
- 11:26Speaker 2: fair expectation for something so radically different. So that's why
- 11:31Speaker 2: I wonder if that's the right fit someone or like
- 11:34Speaker 2: Zach Robinson who comes from the Kyle Shanahan tree and
- 11:37Speaker 2: would do similar things. They're great offensive minds. They could
- 11:41Speaker 2: come in here and get the job done. But could
- 11:43Speaker 2: they do it immediately? Well, Jalen Hurts adapt immediately? Will
- 11:46Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley become an outside wide zone runner immediately? Do
- 11:49Speaker 2: they want those things? If not, do they have to
- 11:52Speaker 2: adapt what they do to the Eagles personnel? And if so,
- 11:55Speaker 2: that's great that they can adapt, But now do you
- 11:58Speaker 2: want them adapting? You you're high them for what they
- 12:01Speaker 2: do best. So I really do think that there are
- 12:04Speaker 2: certain guys Andrew that represent improvement and evolution that also
- 12:10Speaker 2: are consistent with what you already do, but you could
- 12:14Speaker 2: do it better. And I think the guy I'll ask
- 12:16Speaker 2: you on this, the guy that I think can really
- 12:18Speaker 2: help that was in the building or at least interview
- 12:21Speaker 2: with them today in some form or fashion, is Brian Dable.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Brian Dable to me, represents the guy who could come
- 12:27Speaker 2: in and fix your offense without completely renovating, refurbishing, and
- 12:32Speaker 2: gutting everything that you've got.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, he's run heavy, He's proven that he
- 12:37Speaker 4: can tell or an offense around the strength of his quarterback.
- 12:39Speaker 3: There's a lot of play action that you like.
- 12:42Speaker 4: The experience with Nick Sirianni, who Nick Sirianni said has
- 12:45Speaker 4: been instrumental in his coaching career. They overlapped in twenty
- 12:48Speaker 4: twelve with the Kansas City Chiefs. Now you can look
- 12:52Speaker 4: at Brian Dables' track record. He has a lot of
- 12:56Speaker 4: success working with dual threat quarterbacks, but absent of his
- 13:00Speaker 4: time with Josh Allen, he looked at his offenses and
- 13:02Speaker 4: where they've ranked and the lack of production. I mean,
- 13:06Speaker 4: it's kind of concerning from my perspective, they haven't had
- 13:09Speaker 4: these prolific offenses. He's worked with Daniel Jones and he
- 13:12Speaker 4: got Daniel Jones and the Giants team to the postseason
- 13:15Speaker 4: in twenty two. But apart from that, you'd be hard
- 13:18Speaker 4: pressed to find a year where he wasn't with Josh
- 13:21Speaker 4: Allen that he was completely dynamic and innovative and had
- 13:25Speaker 4: these high flying offenses.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Right because he was in Kansas City once as their
- 13:29Speaker 2: offensive coordinator that didn't go well. It didn't go well.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I agree with you, and again that's why I'm not
- 13:35Speaker 2: so much worried as is this guy the greatest thing
- 13:40Speaker 2: in offensive coaching history. Probably not. They made the playoffs
- 13:45Speaker 2: in his first year, not because of his offense, because
- 13:48Speaker 2: of Wink Martin Dale's defense, and then he didn get
- 13:50Speaker 2: along with mc barndale and we know what happened there.
- 13:53Speaker 2: His experience, as you said, working with Josh Allen and
- 13:56Speaker 2: that kind of offense and using athletic quarterback movements blends
- 14:00Speaker 2: well with the Eagles. So that is why I think
- 14:02Speaker 2: it fits. It is a guy who's proven he can
- 14:05Speaker 2: make it work with a good running back and a
- 14:07Speaker 2: good athletic quarterback. But you're right, you don't look at
- 14:10Speaker 2: him and compare his resume as an offensive play caller
- 14:14Speaker 2: to some other guys like Kevin Stefanski is no longer
- 14:17Speaker 2: out there, but at least Kevin Stefanski's two time coach
- 14:20Speaker 2: of the Year. It's done some nice things. Offensively comes
- 14:23Speaker 2: from that old you know, Gary Schubiac not even not
- 14:26Speaker 2: even Gary Kubiak, I mean not Shutbiack, Gary Kubiak, not
- 14:29Speaker 2: Clinton or Mike Kubiak. Gary.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he comes from that background. So and he's gonna
- 14:35Speaker 2: bring structure, he would bring challenge the quarterback.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Yes, I think that that's important. I think one of
- 14:41Speaker 4: the one at the top of the list. One of
- 14:43Speaker 4: the things that needs to be hammered home here is
- 14:46Speaker 4: you have to bring in somebody that's going to challenge
- 14:49Speaker 4: the quarterback and and force him to be at his
- 14:52Speaker 4: best and do things, as I said, make yourself comfortable
- 14:55Speaker 4: being uncomfortable to really move this thing forward.
- 14:58Speaker 2: All right, absolutely, all right, we're gonna take a break.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Can we come back. We'll talk about some other offensive
- 15:02Speaker 2: coordinator candidates. And then you spoke with a former Egos
- 15:05Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. Was very good at his job, and he
- 15:08Speaker 2: had some very interesting thoughts you're gonna share with us.
- 15:10Speaker 2: We'll be back here on Pro Football Report presented by

- 18:39Speaker 1: Once again, here are your hosts from Inside the Birds,
- 18:42Speaker 1: Jeff Moscher and Andrew Dicheko.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Hi, welcome back to the Pro Football Report here on WBCB.
- 18:53Speaker 2: It's Jeff Mosher Andrew Dechecko. We were just talking about
- 18:56Speaker 2: the Eagles offensive coordinator search and man, this a live
- 19:00Speaker 2: crowd here at Chicky's Peach. You can tell they're loving it.
- 19:02Speaker 2: They want to know right now. I get people are
- 19:04Speaker 2: looking at us like, who's it gonna be. So let's
- 19:06Speaker 2: go through some of the names we talked about. Brian Dable, Right,
- 19:09Speaker 2: I'm gonna throw some names here, and by the way,
- 19:12Speaker 2: I think another thing that complicates this is that Sean
- 19:15Speaker 2: McDermott was just fired by the Bills yesterday, Right.
- 19:19Speaker 3: So you're thinking Joe Brady's name.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Well, what I'm thinking is that everybody who's in the
- 19:23Speaker 2: middle of a head coaching search right now, which eventually
- 19:25Speaker 2: then leads to your offensive corridor name, is like hitting pause.
- 19:29Speaker 2: WHOA We all have to think about the fact that
- 19:31Speaker 2: Sean McDermott is.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Now on the market.
- 19:33Speaker 2: It just slows up the motion and it costs more
- 19:36Speaker 2: delays going on, but the Eagles continue to Yeah, and yes,
- 19:40Speaker 2: Joe Brady, that makes him available, but it also could
- 19:43Speaker 2: potentially take a guy like Brian Dable out if he
- 19:46Speaker 2: wants to go, if Buffalo wants him backshore. So it's
- 19:48Speaker 2: a big game of carousel of musical chairs. So let's
- 19:51Speaker 2: talk about some of the guys the Eagles have already
- 19:53Speaker 2: showed interest in. There's former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, Right, Grizzard,
- 20:00Speaker 2: I gotcha, I was playing with you, Yeah, Joshkazard. We
- 20:03Speaker 2: of course Nick Sirian's good friend in the in the
- 20:06Speaker 2: Colts chain. There the offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter James
- 20:11Speaker 2: Robert Couter as we like to call him. Mike Kafka
- 20:14Speaker 2: of course, is interviewed with the Eagles. Zach Robinson we've mentioned,
- 20:19Speaker 2: and Bobby slow Bobby Slowick, which one of those names
- 20:23Speaker 2: if any do you look at and say, yeah, I
- 20:26Speaker 2: like that.
- 20:27Speaker 4: For the Eagles, Well, I would say Zach Robinson's is
- 20:33Speaker 4: a coach that I'm kind of intrigued by knowing for
- 20:36Speaker 4: his run design and I think you're gonna see more motion.
- 20:39Speaker 3: He was a former quarterback.
- 20:40Speaker 4: He was drafted by the New England Patriots back in
- 20:43Speaker 4: twenty ten, so I believe that his ability to relate
- 20:46Speaker 4: to a quarterback shouldn't be.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Can't be overstated. But then I you know Bobby Slow.
- 20:51Speaker 4: It's an interesting guy because he's from the Kyle Shanahan tree.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Interestingly enough, when he came up through the ranks, he
- 20:57Speaker 4: was with Mike Shanahan with Washington, and then he had
- 21:00Speaker 4: a pause in his career. He worked for a Pro
- 21:02Speaker 4: Football Focus and was grading players, and then he was
- 21:05Speaker 4: with the forty nine ers for a while, had a
- 21:07Speaker 4: couple of good seasons there with CJ. Stret Well, really
- 21:11Speaker 4: one really good season with CJ. Shrad when he was
- 21:12Speaker 4: a rookie, threw for twenty three touchdowns five interceptions, and
- 21:16Speaker 4: then he sort of faded a little bit and went
- 21:19Speaker 4: to the Miami Dolphins as their passing game coordinator and
- 21:21Speaker 4: they were twenty fifth in the NFL last season. So
- 21:24Speaker 4: his star is sort of fallen, if you will, But
- 21:27Speaker 4: he's still just thirty eight years old.
- 21:29Speaker 3: I think he brings a little mild intrigue as well.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Do you have any issue at all or any trouble
- 21:34Speaker 2: reconciling the idea of a Shanahan or McVeigh type of
- 21:38Speaker 2: disciple as the Eagles offensive coordinator and if it would
- 21:42Speaker 2: actually work with.
- 21:43Speaker 3: This current construct.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Initially I did, but I go back to you gotta
- 21:48Speaker 4: be comfortable being uncomfortable, and they need to advance this thing,
- 21:52Speaker 4: and they've gotten too married to a certain style and.
- 21:57Speaker 3: They need to get with the times.
- 21:59Speaker 4: They need to improve and evolva as an offense, and
- 22:02Speaker 4: I think to do that you need to bring in
- 22:04Speaker 4: innovative minds and different types of concepts that I believe
- 22:07Speaker 4: are going to help jaywen Hurts and his growth, but
- 22:09Speaker 4: also help this offense elevate to the level of some
- 22:12Speaker 4: of the more preeminent teams.
- 22:13Speaker 3: D you see around the NFL.
- 22:15Speaker 4: How many times have you thought to yourself watching these
- 22:17Speaker 4: postseason games, Man, the Eagles don't do that, or I
- 22:21Speaker 4: wonder what the Eagles offense would look like if they
- 22:22Speaker 4: did that. Well, those type of coaches are going to
- 22:26Speaker 4: implement some of those different tendencies.
- 22:28Speaker 6: You know.
- 22:28Speaker 2: The Eagles won the game against the Lions this year,
- 22:32Speaker 2: so Adam and I weren't trying to be like negative
- 22:34Speaker 2: in the post game, but the way that they were
- 22:37Speaker 2: able to get the ball to jimyor Gibbs, who's a
- 22:41Speaker 2: special talent. The Eagles have a different kind of running
- 22:43Speaker 2: back in Barkley. Yeah, he's not like that. But the
- 22:46Speaker 2: way they were able to get the ball to him
- 22:48Speaker 2: in space and Jamison Williams in space, and especially the
- 22:51Speaker 2: way they do it when they're indoors is something to
- 22:54Speaker 2: really admire there, I mean. And yes, Adam and I
- 22:57Speaker 2: were talking in the postgame show saying, can't the Eagles
- 23:01Speaker 2: just figure can they get their screen game going? Can
- 23:05Speaker 2: they get the bang eight play to aj Brown? Can't
- 23:08Speaker 2: they figure out a way to get these weapons more
- 23:11Speaker 2: yards after catch? And that was an issue.
- 23:13Speaker 4: So you brought up the screen game and I agree
- 23:15Speaker 4: wholeheartedly with you, and I wanted to give you a
- 23:18Speaker 4: chance here to expand on something that you were talking
- 23:20Speaker 4: to me about. You texted me last week about a
- 23:23Speaker 4: name he hasn't been associated with the Eagles, but you
- 23:27Speaker 4: saw what he was able to do with Kenny Gangwell
- 23:29Speaker 4: in Pittsburgh and other places in the NFL, and that's
- 23:32Speaker 4: Arthur Smith.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Yeah. I think Arthur Smith has the coaching credentials and
- 23:37Speaker 2: pedigree that would fit with what Nick Siriani has done here.
- 23:42Speaker 2: And again, then you get back into well, do you
- 23:44Speaker 2: want to continue that or take the sledgehammer. I don't
- 23:47Speaker 2: get the sense listening to Nick that they want to
- 23:50Speaker 2: take the sledgehammer the way some people think it should
- 23:53Speaker 2: be done. And I'm not saying those people who think
- 23:55Speaker 2: that way are wrong because I might be in that camp.
- 23:58Speaker 2: But Arthur's Smith likes to put two tight ends on
- 24:01Speaker 2: the field. He likes to run the wide zone. Now
- 24:03Speaker 2: the Eagles are more of a little inside zone outside
- 24:06Speaker 2: that is wide, but I'm sure Arthur Smith can adjust
- 24:09Speaker 2: from that standpoint. But the bottom line is he likes
- 24:11Speaker 2: to run the ball. He likes to go heavy up
- 24:13Speaker 2: front and play twelve personnel like the Eagles do. And
- 24:15Speaker 2: his past concepts he's known for being able to run
- 24:19Speaker 2: multiple pass concepts out of the same formations. And yes,
- 24:22Speaker 2: bring the horizontal and the screen game to an offense
- 24:26Speaker 2: that is severely lacking in the Eagles offense. And by
- 24:30Speaker 2: the way, I know some people are sour on Arthur
- 24:32Speaker 2: from his Atlanta Falcons coaching career. He had Spencer Ritter
- 24:37Speaker 2: as a quarterback. You have Marcus Mariota, and his offenses
- 24:40Speaker 2: didn't suck, they were just average. I think it's pretty good.
- 24:43Speaker 2: When you have Spencer Ritter as your quarterback, then you
- 24:45Speaker 2: have an average offense because he's not an NFL quarterback.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 24:49Speaker 4: One of the more baffling things now that we're on
- 24:51Speaker 4: the screen game is that the past couple training camps,
- 24:56Speaker 4: whether it's DeAndre Swift, whether it's Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley,
- 24:59Speaker 4: who we've had on this show, show, they catch a
- 25:01Speaker 4: plethora of passes, whether it's you know, Will Rouse or
- 25:04Speaker 4: even just in the flat jaywhen Hurts is looking to
- 25:07Speaker 4: them in training camp early and often throughout any practice.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Yet it doesn't correlate to regular season. It's not implemented
- 25:13Speaker 4: in their offense.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yep.
- 25:14Speaker 3: And I can't make at your tails of it.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Listen, I'm sure you've heard Adam say it. You've heard
- 25:18Speaker 2: me say it Adam, and not our listeners. Probably hear
- 25:21Speaker 2: us say it all the time. We go to training camp,
- 25:23Speaker 2: and we watched these camps, whether it was Swift, whether
- 25:25Speaker 2: it was Barkley, whether it was gain Well, and we're
- 25:28Speaker 2: looking at each other like, Wow, they just threw it
- 25:31Speaker 2: to the running back on wheel routes four or five,
- 25:33Speaker 2: six straight times. They're really trying to get this thing
- 25:35Speaker 2: incorporated into the offense, and then we're like week seven
- 25:38Speaker 2: in the season and they're like, what happened? Where did
- 25:41Speaker 2: it go? Well?
- 25:42Speaker 4: Like the great Who song, I won't be fooled again.
- 25:45Speaker 4: I need to see it to believe it in the
- 25:47Speaker 4: regular season.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Absolutely, But I do think Arthur Smith's philosophy and the
- 25:50Speaker 2: way he orchestrates an offense may not excite a lot
- 25:53Speaker 2: of people. But again, this isn't just This doesn't have
- 25:57Speaker 2: to be about just radically take everything you do in
- 26:00Speaker 2: blowing it up. I wouldn't mind it, but I also
- 26:03Speaker 2: think with it's hard when you have so many experienced,
- 26:07Speaker 2: veteran guys. You know, it's one thing if you're a
- 26:09Speaker 2: head coach and you're starting from scratch and you bring
- 26:11Speaker 2: in a up but they're not. They're in win urgent.
- 26:14Speaker 2: You heard how he Rose would say, we are in
- 26:16Speaker 2: an urgent mode to win now. So they need somebody
- 26:19Speaker 2: who can come in and implement an offense that this
- 26:22Speaker 2: personnel is not gonna need six to seven weeks to
- 26:25Speaker 2: figure out.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Yeah, you're right realistically to expect the Eagles to rip down,
- 26:29Speaker 4: to rip out the foundation and start from scratch and
- 26:32Speaker 4: completely re reimagine this offense is not realistic. It's more
- 26:38Speaker 4: realistic to bring in someone that's going to marry their
- 26:41Speaker 4: vision of the offense with what they already have in place,
- 26:43Speaker 4: with the talent that they have in place, and try
- 26:46Speaker 4: to go from there, but have a more I guess,
- 26:49Speaker 4: a more enhanced version, kind of like what we were
- 26:51Speaker 4: expecting to see from Kellen Moore before it became the
- 26:53Speaker 4: Saquon Barkley Show. I think, but I believe that they
- 26:58Speaker 4: should rip it down. But that does mean that that's
- 27:00Speaker 4: what I think is really realistically going to happen.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Right, Producer, Chris, you know, we should we should be
- 27:05Speaker 2: able to get like a home remodeling sponsor for this
- 27:07Speaker 2: show because we might have two or three more weeks
- 27:10Speaker 2: of these analogies and home improvement. And I'm just just
- 27:12Speaker 2: giving you a suggestion and idea. Take it to the
- 27:15Speaker 2: brass and we'll see what we can do.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:16Speaker 3: That's yeah for you, exactly all right.
- 27:20Speaker 2: You had a great conversation to available on Inside the
- 27:23Speaker 2: Birds podcasting platform right now and tomorrow to two part
- 27:26Speaker 2: series with former Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornweg, and the
- 27:31Speaker 2: first part of it was really interesting. I think people
- 27:34Speaker 2: forget that he was part of the Eagles staff in
- 27:37Speaker 2: twenty twenty, which didn't work out well for the for
- 27:40Speaker 2: that season and that staff, but did for the long
- 27:44Speaker 2: term because Marty was a big part of scouting, watching
- 27:48Speaker 2: the tape on Jalen Hurts andt Oklahoma and helping the
- 27:51Speaker 2: organization decide to draft him in the second round. What
- 27:55Speaker 2: else did you learn about Marty's role there?
- 27:57Speaker 4: Well, he was essentio in facilitating his analysis and information
- 28:01Speaker 4: to Doug Peterson and then the evaluators prior to the
- 28:04Speaker 4: twenty twenty draft. He worked closely with Jaywen.
- 28:08Speaker 3: That was his job.
- 28:10Speaker 4: You had all these different coaches, whether it was Andrew
- 28:11Speaker 4: Briner who was a past game analyst, you had Rich Gangarello,
- 28:15Speaker 4: Press Taylor was there. Marty's job was solely to focus
- 28:18Speaker 4: on the development of Hurts, and he talked about it
- 28:21Speaker 4: was day three of training camp where he really realized.
- 28:23Speaker 4: And keep in mind, Marty morning Wegg has worked with
- 28:27Speaker 4: Steve Young, Brett Farve, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, Jeff Garcia.
- 28:32Speaker 4: I said, based on your experience, when did you know
- 28:35Speaker 4: that he had what it takes, or that any quarterback
- 28:39Speaker 4: has what it takes to be successful at the next level.
- 28:41Speaker 3: He said it was.
- 28:41Speaker 4: About day three of training camp where he said sleep
- 28:44Speaker 4: his secondary.
- 28:45Speaker 3: He's in the building until midnight.
- 28:48Speaker 4: I mean, if you, I mean you have to listen
- 28:50Speaker 4: to the podcast, of course, but you're going to come
- 28:52Speaker 4: away with the profound thought that he loves Jaywen Hurts.
- 28:56Speaker 4: Marty morning Wegg loves Jaywen Hurts and he's still in
- 28:59Speaker 4: contact with him. He still has dialogue and I was
- 29:02Speaker 4: through texting. But if I remember correctly, I think at
- 29:05Speaker 4: the time Jalen may have referred to Marty morning Wegg
- 29:07Speaker 4: as a wise old owl.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Yes, I think. And Jalen doesn't really, you know, go
- 29:11Speaker 2: out of his way to praise anybody. Yeah, his past
- 29:14Speaker 2: offensive coordinator especially, but he did has always said nice
- 29:19Speaker 2: things about Marty. I also thought it was interesting for
- 29:21Speaker 2: people to listen to Marty went back to the Alabama
- 29:26Speaker 2: tape and the Oklahoma tape and noticed some things that
- 29:28Speaker 2: were different in his game. So that was really interesting.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Before we're getting close on a break, I also wanted
- 29:33Speaker 2: to talk about part two, which comes out tomorrow, because
- 29:35Speaker 2: this is really pertinent to the Eagles right now. What
- 29:39Speaker 2: was his viewpoint on what you should be looking for
- 29:43Speaker 2: from a new offensive play caller for this particular team.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Yeah, well, he talks about I asked him about his
- 29:49Speaker 4: experience shouldering play calling duties alongside Andy Reid and what
- 29:53Speaker 4: that dynamic was like.
- 29:55Speaker 3: And then I.
- 29:56Speaker 4: Mentioned I equated to the Eagles, and you know, you
- 29:59Speaker 4: have to first figure out what you want to be
- 30:02Speaker 4: as an offense and start to build.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Around that sounds familiar.
- 30:06Speaker 4: So yeah, it talks a lot about what you and
- 30:08Speaker 4: I were just talking about, and more so acquiescing or
- 30:13Speaker 4: accentuating the strengths of your personnel, right, more so than
- 30:16Speaker 4: than ripping it down and trying to you know, square
- 30:18Speaker 4: peg round hole.
- 30:19Speaker 3: But it's a really fascinating conversation we talked.
- 30:22Speaker 4: We get into all that and a number of other
- 30:24Speaker 4: things that I believe Eagles fans will really appreciate.
- 30:27Speaker 2: You know, he had such great energy. He was out
- 30:28Speaker 2: there in Montana. He played at the University of Montana.
- 30:31Speaker 2: I think he was doing some play by play for them,
- 30:34Speaker 2: But to hear him talk about the Eagles, He's been
- 30:37Speaker 2: so many Baltimore, Jets, San Francisco, Green Bay, Detroit, Detroit.
- 30:42Speaker 2: I think I was gonna say, he's been so many
- 30:44Speaker 2: places that he probably had great experiences. Detroit is probably
- 30:46Speaker 2: the one that he'd like to forget, but you could
- 30:49Speaker 2: tell he sort of has a reverence for his time
- 30:51Speaker 2: with Andy Reid and in Philadelphia.
- 30:53Speaker 4: And so yeah, and so I asked him, do you
- 30:56Speaker 4: ever get the itch to get back into coaching?
- 30:58Speaker 3: And he gave a good answer. You'll have to listen
- 31:00Speaker 3: to hear what he said.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Absolutely, that will be on out tomorrow on the Inside
- 31:03Speaker 2: the Birds podcast and YouTube platform.
