- 1:04Want to be one of us? You know what somebody's got to
- 1:09be at this point, and especially with no Bob Trollsby tonight,
- 1:13we're going to be kind of off the cuff shooting the shit, as
- 1:17they say. And you know, we're going to be
- 1:20talking about K State basketball, which actually meets
- 1:22that theme. But first, let's make sure to
- 1:26always go ahead and give a shout out to our sponsors.
- 1:30And let's go ahead and start with Annie Mays Parlor.
- 1:34Everyone loves Annie Mays. I don't have a beer today
- 1:37unfortunately in this hotel room in Wichita, but this pretend

- 2:55see that list of upcoming events.
- 2:56But again, go visit your auntie or auntie.
- 3:00You say Auntie, your auntie. Oh, that was.
- 3:04It's definitely my, it's my aunt.
- 3:07I don't if you're saying with an IE at the end of it, I guess you
- 3:10have to say auntie. It doesn't sound like saying
- 3:14Auntie. I know.
- 3:16I don't know why I said it like that.
- 3:17I. Don't ever say the word Auntie.
- 3:19It's. Just yeah, that's just my aunt.
- 3:22Yeah, OK, fair enough. Well, anyway, you're an aunt,
- 3:26guy. They're at 616 N 12th St. in the
- 3:29heart of Aggieville. And be sure to tell them that
- 3:31Cocaine Willy sent ya. Well, you know, it's February
- 3:3724th and the basketball season has basically been done for the
- 3:40past six to seven weeks. But let's go ahead and talk
- 3:44about this past week in K State men's basketball.
- 3:48Admittingly, it was a better week last week compared to the
- 3:50past. Oh, I don't know, say four or
- 3:52five weeks. The Cats did go one and one last
- 3:55week. We were recording our episode
- 3:58last week as K State was playing Scott Drew's Baylor Bears.
- 4:04But Baylor game was actually kind of a wild game for the
- 4:07Cats. A 90 to 74 victory that got
- 4:12Matthew Driscoll's first win as a head coach inside Bramwich
- 4:15Coliseum. And I believe five tries.
- 4:19But this really was a great performance, kind of I, I would
- 4:23say from a dynamic duo of guards.
- 4:27I'm thinking about it. Nate Johnson, PJ Haggerty.
- 4:30Nate had 33 points and 9 assists, so one off of a double
- 4:34double. And then PJ Haggerty, off of a
- 4:3715 of 23 shooting performance, had 34 points.
- 4:42Offensively, K State look like, you know, in some of the really
- 4:45good games this year, when they look good on the offensive side,
- 4:48they shot 57% from the field, 47% from three.
- 4:52But the thing that really kept him in this game, obviously, and
- 4:56kind of, you know, completely dominating this game was on the
- 4:59defensive side, holding Baylor to 40% shooting and 13% from 3.
- 5:05Although in the second-half, Baylor did kind of cut it to 9
- 5:09points with about 8 minutes to go.
- 5:11The Cats went on a little bit of a run, had a strong end of the
- 5:14second-half and admittingly for you could probably say maybe
- 5:18like 30 to 32 minutes of this game.
- 5:21K State looked pretty exciting. And who'd have thought maybe if
- 5:25they could have done this through the year.
- 5:27But kind of funny that it did happen against Baylor, thinking
- 5:31about historically and this being, you know, a game where
- 5:35Jerome Tang is no longer, you know, the K State men's
- 5:38basketball head coach. But looking at the Baylor game,
- 5:42what did you like about what you saw from this team after kind of
- 5:46all this turmoil that's been going on?
- 5:48Obviously they were, I mean, little healthier.
- 5:52It looked like. They look like they were all the
- 5:54way there in terms of, you know, McGriff kind of finally getting
- 5:59back into the rhythm of things. And then the the key to
- 6:04everything is Nate Johnson right now.
- 6:06Nate Johnson literally is carrying this team.
- 6:09And some would say that he could have been doing this throughout
- 6:12the season. And maybe that's where people
- 6:15were getting, you know, the the messaging that this team is
- 6:20peaking at the right time, that they're playing better
- 6:23basketball than they had previously when they had lost.
- 6:27I don't even know how many straight, but the Nate Johnson
- 6:32really is the only bright spot because PJ is doing what PJS
- 6:36been doing all season. And if you get a, a Nate Johnson
- 6:41like this, that is shooting out out of his mind and is being
- 6:46efficient with the ball in terms of dealing out assists, low
- 6:50turnover numbers. And is it being a a pest on both
- 6:56ends for the duration of the game?
- 6:58Like he's played, he played almost every minute of that game
- 7:02and an ungodly amount of steals, ran point guard very efficiently
- 7:09and then just scored the ball. Like you can't ask for a better
- 7:14performance than that. And that will propel you to wins
- 7:17versus bad teams and probably versus good teams.
- 7:19But you need a lot of help. And when you're that efficient
- 7:23feeling the ball out, good things are going to happen.
- 7:26So that Baylor game, Baylor's not very good.
- 7:29So that I mean, that's that's the first thing that we need to
- 7:33mention. They're not very good.
- 7:35But the pieces for what Driscoll wanted to do, I mean, that was
- 7:42probably, it couldn't have been maybe you know, the fifth lowest
- 7:483 point takes that we had all season.
- 7:51I mean, we only took like what, 1415?
- 7:56Something. Like that insanely low number
- 7:59and we were, we hit like 9. So I mean, it's just we were
- 8:03just efficient with the thing with with the game and it's not
- 8:07what we really thought we were going to get with Driscoll
- 8:10Rawlins, if that makes sense. Like we thought we were going to
- 8:12be shooting threes every possession, going down and
- 8:15trying to get quick, quick turn around, quick possessions and
- 8:18just chucking that baby up. But that's not what we got.
- 8:22And it was the best performance in the Big 12 that we've seen so
- 8:25far, which is strange. I don't know.
- 8:28Strange. Yeah, I mean, you mentioned Nate
- 8:31Johnson and I think I, I believe, I think I've said this
- 8:34on kind of a previous show, but he when he plays the point and
- 8:39PJS the off guard, I think the offense does usually run better.
- 8:46Now we didn't necessarily see that, you know, in the Texas
- 8:49Tech game, Albia, Texas Tech is a very good team in the Big 12,
- 8:53obviously. But in the Baylor game, you
- 8:55really saw the the strength of having Nate Johnson kind of be
- 8:59your primary point guard guy, you know, ball handler, as you
- 9:02said. And it really does make the
- 9:04offense I think, run way more efficiently.
- 9:09Just looked better. Didn't necessarily have to
- 9:12settle for a lot of poor shots in that game.
- 9:16You know, they did have that kind of stretch in the
- 9:18second-half where, you know, it kind of looks similar to some
- 9:21other games that we have played this year, you know, where you
- 9:25do stop making things happen. But from that 8 minute mark on,
- 9:30they did a really good job of number one, bottling up Baylor
- 9:33on the offensive end, but also making some pretty big shots.
- 9:37And, you know, it was a kind of incredible to see that, you
- 9:41know, with those two guys kind of looking at it from a
- 9:44historical perspective, the last duo like that, I believe you'd
- 9:49be able to score more than 30 points.
- 9:51Michael Beasley and Bill Walker, 2007 with a team that ended up
- 9:57going the NCAA tournament that year, so.
- 10:01I mean that that that won't be happening this season, but I
- 10:04mean, it just it's kind of that what could have been, you know,
- 10:10it's unfortunate because mind you, if you know, and a guy like
- 10:15Abbi Bashir was out for that game, you know that that's where
- 10:18his spacing makes it even better.
- 10:21So you don't have like maybe necessarily a Taj Manning out on
- 10:24the floor, but maybe the defense suffers.
- 10:27I don't know. I don't know if there's a whole
- 10:31dynamic that he could have been with what could have been, but I
- 10:35don't know. I'm, I'm, I'm happy to see Nate
- 10:39Johnson because that's that was my guy going into the season.
- 10:42I thought he was going to be all worldly.
- 10:45I thought this is what we were going to get.
- 10:47Not not necessarily 33 points, but you know, a solid like 18 to
- 10:51close to 20 points a game and good rebounding numbers, good
- 10:56assist numbers and just a pest on defense.
- 10:59And you know, it, it kind of was the performance of the year for
- 11:02him. But it it you thought maybe this
- 11:06would propel this team into a game versus Texas Tech, which
- 11:11we're about to talk about that, you know, is short handed,
- 11:16missing their best player and hasn't been necessarily guard
- 11:21heavy all season. And we thought maybe potentially
- 11:24we had the better guard duo going into that game and it it
- 11:31just didn't matter. It just didn't matter.
- 11:33But you'll you'll just go. Through the numbers for us,
- 11:35brother. Yeah, I'd love to.
- 11:37Yeah. So obviously Saturday, Texas
- 11:40Tech, this team had a really big loss.
- 11:43JT Toppen was that got hurt in the Arizona State game.
- 11:48He's out for the season, which, you know, he's one of the best
- 11:53players in the country. And so for K State going into
- 11:56Lubbock, you may think, you know, after a Baylor win and
- 12:01Texas Tech maybe without their best player, that it might have
- 12:05been a closer, you know, closer final score.
- 12:08But K State lost by 28 points. So it was 100 to 72.
- 12:17Texas Tech beat K State K like it was a weird game because they
- 12:27the, the first half, this team, I thought this team was going to
- 12:29lose by 40. You know, at one point you're
- 12:32just, you know, I think it was like 34 to 12 or 32 to 14, you
- 12:37know, one of those. But K State cut it to 10 midway
- 12:41through the second-half. Texas Tech kind of went on a
- 12:44lull. K State just started making some
- 12:46shots, but then just absolute, you know, incredible second,
- 12:52second part of the second-half, you know, just not very good
- 12:56offensively, giving up a lot of stuff on the defensive end to
- 13:00get that 28 point deficit by the end of it.
- 13:04You know, it was, it was a game where K State just kind of
- 13:07struggled, you know, all around. Obviously in the defensive side
- 13:11they were not very good, but didn't really make a ton of
- 13:13threes. They were 6 and 20 from the
- 13:15three-point line. They did shoot 44%.
- 13:18That's not that's not great, but it could be a lot worse, you
- 13:23know? I mean, I've seen worse, but I
- 13:25don't know if I don't know what much worse would have got us.
- 13:29You know the the thing about? The shooting was that there were
- 13:34a lot of set shots that could have been, you know, juxtaposed
- 13:38to what we saw versus Baylor where it was a smooth, it was a
- 13:43smooth 20 shots here from the three-point line.
- 13:46And it was what did we have versus how many did we have
- 13:49versus Baylor? I think I just said the number.
- 13:51I'm not sure though, but or. 15. We had 15 No 17 threes from from
- 13:59in that Baylor game. So the numbers are similar, but
- 14:04you're not cashing in on it, you're not catching it.
- 14:07We had 18 assists in that Baylor game to 8 in the Texas Tech.
- 14:11It that's that just screams to me that we're not hitting the
- 14:15shots off of those those first passes.
- 14:18Like there's there's not enough assists, not enough baskets
- 14:21being made 44% when you're shooting 30 from the three,
- 14:25that's bad. That's not good.
- 14:27You're not you're not very efficient.
- 14:29You're going to, you're going to, I mean, if you're not
- 14:31crashing the board and getting the law off the offensive
- 14:34rebounds, you're going to lose by a lot because the other team,
- 14:38they're rebounding. They got 40 rebounds to your 28.
- 14:41And that's just another sign of what this K State team was
- 14:47constructed like, where you you're not physical enough on
- 14:50the interior. Buca's not skilled enough to
- 14:53grab a rebound or stay on the floor long enough to do it.
- 14:57Regret's never going to be that guy.
- 15:00He's playing Center for us and he's a stretch 4 at the most.
- 15:04He does not. I mean, he wants to score
- 15:06inside, but he's not. He's not battling for rebounds.
- 15:09It's that that's he. It's just not built right.
- 15:12And that Texas Tech, I mean, imagine if they had top and who
- 15:16is going to crash boards, do all The Dirty work and be skilled.
- 15:21And I mean, what did McGriff foul out?
- 15:23McGriff fouling out? I mean, that that was versus
- 15:27some, you know, versus lesser opponents than what you would
- 15:31have saw with JT top. And my Texas Tech team's still
- 15:34pretty good. But man, you thought you would
- 15:37have a fighter's chance with their missing their first, their
- 15:41best player that game and for the season, which is which we'll
- 15:45talk about later in NCAA tournament hopes and all that
- 15:49stuff. But man, it was just a bad game
- 15:53all around. You know, not not banging enough
- 15:56shots not and they and they pestered the ball and their
- 15:59guards really showed up efficient numbers.
- 16:02I think their worst shooting guard was like 5050 something
- 16:05percent. They they got whatever they
- 16:08wanted and scored at will. So it was tough.
- 16:11It was a tough day I but I kind of expected it.
- 16:16Though, Yeah. On the road it's.
- 16:20Tough. I mean, I think, you know, Buca
- 16:23played 4 minutes in this game. I honestly think that not having
- 16:29GT topping in the lineup kind of changed the complete dynamic of
- 16:34the Tech, this Texas Tech team and how he would typically
- 16:36defend them. And you can see it.
- 16:38We kind of had to play small through this game cost Andre
- 16:42Kostich, he played 18 minutes. CJ Jones played 23 minutes in
- 16:47this game. I I won't I won't say anything,
- 16:54but it it it was kind of a situation where I think it this
- 16:59Texas Tech team without GT top end was a matchup problem.
- 17:03I mean, it really, really was, you know, and, and, and if
- 17:08people haven't necessarily watched a lot of Texas Tech
- 17:10basketball, Christian Anderson is an exceptional point guard.
- 17:14He's a really, really good player.
- 17:17But Donovan Atwell, who, you know, he got 26 points in this
- 17:21game. I mean, this isn't he.
- 17:24He was really, really good. I I mean, he, he, yeah.
- 17:30But he's but he's their best 3 point shooter and it and it.
- 17:33Showed, it showed. We didn't have any, but because
- 17:36Nate had to stay on Anderson because he's our best defender
- 17:40and he had to stay on and he was getting cooked.
- 17:42But that was that's the problem. Like it, it's just one guy would
- 17:46beat you and then another guy would be right there and it and
- 17:48they were just better on the glass as a team.
- 17:52That's that's also the problem. They have 40 rebounds.
- 17:55We had 28. McGriff did did, all right,
- 17:58eight. But he found out, you know, like
- 18:00like 23 minutes. That's not enough.
- 18:03That is not. Enough.
- 18:03It was just it's it's yeah, that I think that team without JT
- 18:06Toppin is a matchup problem. And you know, Toppin, you could
- 18:11then play a little bit of a bigger Yeah, you would probably
- 18:15anticipate playing Buka Moore in that game. 4 minutes for your
- 18:20backup center is not great. You know, that's just not, not
- 18:24good. And that just shows, you know,
- 18:26playing Taj Manning at the five and four guards, that was going
- 18:30to potentially be your best chance to be competitive in this
- 18:32game if you started making some shots, didn't happen.
- 18:35We obviously saw the result there.
- 18:37So yeah, not a that's not a great, you know, 28 point loss
- 18:43is not great. I'll be it against Texas Tech.
- 18:47We'll see how they do as we get closer to the Big 12 tournament.
- 18:51Want to mention one game. You know, we tomorrow night we
- 18:54play at Colorado on last week's show.
- 18:57We did kind of talk at the end of the episode if we thought K
- 19:01State was going to win another game.
- 19:03And I did say yes and I got that.
- 19:08But admittingly, kind of looking at the kind of the, I guess
- 19:12next, how many games we got left here.
- 19:15So at Colorado, TCU at home, West Virginia at home and then
- 19:20at Kansas, this Colorado team is probably the, from a record
- 19:26perspective, worst record that we're going to be playing
- 19:28against in the next four games again on the road.
- 19:32And you know, probably going to be a pretty, pretty easy to get
- 19:36tickets if anybody's wanting to go to that game.
- 19:39But with Colorado tomorrow night, TCU on Saturday, give me
- 19:46what you think K State's record this week is going to be.
- 19:51I could see one in one. I could see one in one.
- 19:54I mean, it would be nice. Two and O is not off the table.
- 20:00I think this Colorado game could.
- 20:04If they could get this one on the road, I would feel a lot
- 20:08better about that TCU game. It's just depends on who shows
- 20:13up. What kind of team shows up
- 20:15because the shooting on the road is dreadful.
- 20:19So going to this Colorado team who's not all that good on
- 20:24defense, but it's just it's it's going to be tough.
- 20:30It's going to be tough. But I think a one and one
- 20:33performance is where where we land at.
- 20:37What is their last few games been?
- 20:39They had a win versus Oklahoma State, Big lost to BYU.
- 20:44They scored 44 points versus Texas Tech.
- 20:47Yeah, holy cannoli that. Beat Arizona State.
- 20:53And lost to Baylor, Man, I mean, they're right that it.
- 20:59That's kind of nuts. They beat Arizona, I don't know.
- 21:04I twice they had beat Utah and they beat TCU and Oklahoma
- 21:09State. OK.
- 21:10I'm going to give us a win versus Colorado and that.
- 21:13Give me two and O Give me two and O I'm feeling spicy.
- 21:17Give me two and O. Yeah, Have we the Colorado?
- 21:23Team already. They've not, no, we've now we've
- 21:25not played Colorado. I'm giving us the TCU because I
- 21:30think I, you know, thinking about, you know, obviously
- 21:34should have beat him in Fort Worth.
- 21:37I don't know if this Colorado team is that good.
- 21:40I guess my thing is can this team, they got to shoot pretty
- 21:44well on the road to win a game. So hopefully you know, if they
- 21:49can make some shots early on, get some good momentum.
- 21:52I I'm not, I don't know if I'm going to say 2 and O, I'm going
- 21:56to say one and one. This team doesn't deserve A2 and
- 21:58O production. It doesn't, but the problem with
- 22:02Colorado is they have match up nightmares like Dak is.
- 22:08I think that's how you say his name.
- 22:09Is it Dock or Dak? Dak, I think, yeah.
- 22:11I mean, he, I saw him earlier in the season, I can't remember who
- 22:15they were playing, but I mean, he's a freak.
- 22:19He's all of seven, he's all of seven foot, handles the ball.
- 22:23And I mean, it's it's going to be tough to deal with him.
- 22:27I don't know who we're putting on him, how we're going to deal
- 22:30with that. But I think this is probably
- 22:35going to be the PJ Haggerty game.
- 22:37I think I think him versus Isaiah Johnson, freshman versus
- 22:42senior or junior, whatever the veteran versus the the young
- 22:47buck, they have similar games in my opinion.
- 22:50So I think PJ kind of shows up for this one.
- 22:54I think PJ kind of shows up for this one.
- 22:56Give me PJ Haggerty with a 30 biscuit and on the road.
- 22:59Give me PJ 30 and he he he misses less than two free
- 23:07throws. Wow.
- 23:09That is. That's the thing That's crazy.
- 23:13Yeah, that's a that's crazy talk.
- 23:16No way. He'll miss his first one, and
- 23:21he'll miss his last one. Those are the two he misses.
- 23:25I'll miss the first. He gets that line the first time
- 23:28he misses. He's done for two, no?
- 23:33He calibrates and then. He gets a little wack.
- 23:37Yeah. That's good.
- 23:38That's good. Yeah, I'll.
- 23:41I'll give you that one. All right, well, let's just stay
- 23:46on the men's basketball topic and get into updates on the hot
- 23:51board. So obviously for the next
- 23:54handful of weeks, we're going to be hearing, you know, what's
- 23:57going on with K State basketball head coach recruiting.
- 24:01We talked a little bit last week about kind of the supposed maybe
- 24:05early candidates on the hot board, Jared Calhoun, Eric Olin,
- 24:12Alan Huss. Talked a little bit about like
- 24:16Andy Kennedy and Casey Alexander, some of these names.
- 24:20But man, the past handful of days we have a trio of Chris's
- 24:27that apparently have entered the hot board party.
- 24:33We'll start with #1 and this one, who'd have thought there
- 24:40might be, you know, a guy like this coming in?
- 24:42But Chris Beard is apparently one of those Chris's that's
- 24:46being talked about. For anybody who's not aware.
- 24:50Chris Beard, current head coach at Ole Miss, brought them to the
- 24:54Sweet 16 last year. Former head coach at University
- 24:58of Texas, Texas Tech. Some donors apparently want him.
- 25:07Couple other Chris's. Chris Holtman, the DePaul head
- 25:10coach and former head coach at Ohio States.
- 25:14And Butler, right? I'm pretty sure had some pretty
- 25:18good success at Butler and Ohio State with those teams in the
- 25:21North State tournament. Has DePaul this year, has
- 25:24improved DePaul this year compared to his first year of
- 25:27last year. And then Chris Mack, who was the
- 25:30Xavier head coach and head coach at Louisville and is now at the
- 25:34College of Charleston. 3 Chris's I mean, I, you know.
- 25:41Yeah, I mean, not the most excite when I first OK, so when
- 25:47I first heard Chris Beard's name, you know, we had mentioned
- 25:53him suddenly in a a previous episode.
- 25:58I would not recommend going to look for that comment that I
- 26:02made about him. But when I first heard it, I
- 26:06said, you know, that would be an excitement level to the the
- 26:10basketball program with a, you know, a coach that is very
- 26:15visible out in the spotlight, has a huge name, would bring a
- 26:19lot of interest. But then I thought about it.
- 26:22Probably not for the right reasons, probably not for the
- 26:26and coming off of Jerome Tan, who is a media darling, I guess
- 26:30you could say that's probably not what we need, probably not
- 26:36what we need for the program. He has a track record of being a
- 26:43good basketball coach, which I don't think anybody can deny.
- 26:48I don't know where Ole Miss is standing right now.
- 26:50I don't think it's too hot. But his tenures with Texas Tech,
- 26:56Texas, there were some bright spots in there that you would
- 27:01you could see yourself seen in Manhattan.
- 27:06But the problem is it's just that's a lot.
- 27:10It's it's coming with a lot. I know it's a law.
- 27:14It was a long time ago, but it, it does, it's still there.
- 27:18That stink is still there kind of so that I, I, I reversed my
- 27:26thinking on that. And I think it's a no for me.
- 27:29I think that's a no for me. Chris Holtzman by on the other
- 27:34hand, not that good of a basketball coach, but he's kind
- 27:42of clean. He's kind of a, you know, he's
- 27:44not the oldest fella. He's he's had some good
- 27:50recruiting pedigree at Ohio State.
- 27:52I mean, I've listened to that 97.1 radio all the times the fan
- 27:58just listening to them talk about back in the day when they
- 28:00used to talk about Chris Holtman, he could recruit his
- 28:03butt off. Now getting his team to believe
- 28:06and buy in and do all the things that they need to do wasn't
- 28:10always there for the Buckeyes. And I don't know what he needs
- 28:14to do and what he's done with DePaul.
- 28:16Like you said, he's he's improved off of last season, but
- 28:19Paul was arguably one of the worst basketball programs, you
- 28:23know, in America. They were so bad at 2 two or
- 28:27three seasons ago. So maybe he's getting his chops
- 28:33together and he's he'll be a a decent basketball coach.
- 28:36But going into the Big 12 is a totally different monster.
- 28:40This is a killer league out here.
- 28:43We played DePaul this season, didn't we?
- 28:46No, or was that last we've played?
- 28:50We've played DePaul recently. I feel like we.
- 28:54Have we? We played him the Michael
- 28:59Beasley's here. And by recent, that is recent.
- 29:05That is recent, yeah. And.
- 29:10Then Chris Mack. I mean, that's, is that worth
- 29:13even talking about? I don't know.
- 29:14Chris Mack. I don't know.
- 29:16He is a beautiful bald though, right?
- 29:19You know, if that is, if that is what we're looking at, he sexy,
- 29:23bald he, he would be at the top of the list.
- 29:27Let me start with Chris Beard. I do not believe you can hire a
- 29:34guy who was fired with cause at a previous institution when you
- 29:41are in a middle of a lawsuit about firing your coach for
- 29:45cause. I feel like that just does not
- 29:50play well on the outside in the media.
- 29:55I just don't think that's going to that is that is going to play
- 29:59off his the the personal situation that he had with the
- 30:10domestic violence. I know he was not found guilty
- 30:15without or the charges were dropped for me.
- 30:21I don't, I don't like that situation.
- 30:26I I do it's hard because he obviously if if his if his name
- 30:34is getting floated out there, he wants out of out of Ole Miss,
- 30:36right. And let's just say, for example,
- 30:42let's talk about a job that might open in the Big 12,
- 30:45Arizona State or Cincinnati. I don't know if actually
- 30:51Cincinnati's going to open anymore.
- 30:52But if Chris Beard came into the Big 12, would you be afraid of
- 31:00him at Arizona State building that program up?
- 31:06I I mean, he's shown at Texas Tech the ability like he got, he
- 31:11got that program to two Elite Eights in a national
- 31:15championship game, Ole Miss A-Team that has had little
- 31:21historical significance in basketball.
- 31:23In his second year, he got into the Sweet 16.
- 31:27He's I would be if like if he goes to Arizona State or he go,
- 31:32you know, I have a feeling he would do well like at another
- 31:38program. So I think that then I guess in
- 31:44my head I'm like, OK, if he comes to K state.
- 31:47So is it just that it's the personal stuff, like it's the
- 31:49things that he had going on? He's a ship jumper too, though
- 31:54he's a. Ship Jumper He.
- 31:55He moves around. So I mean, are you really
- 31:58building for something or I mean, what, what's the long term
- 32:02plan? I mean, what, how much do you
- 32:04want of Chris Beard? Is this to get the program jump
- 32:07started back up to again, 'cause he, like you said, he's shown
- 32:11the potential to do that with multiple programs and, you know,
- 32:16with some good success. But is he a ship jumper?
- 32:19Does he want that next step? Because he was at where I think
- 32:23he wanted to be with UT and then should hit the fan.
- 32:30Has to bounce goes to Ole Miss has success and then you're
- 32:34hearing those rumors of with the K State thing he wants out of
- 32:37there maybe potentially to the next bigger thing to take that
- 32:41next big step to go somewhere else.
- 32:44I don't know where where after K State is bigger than that what
- 32:47he's what his aspirations are. But you obviously saw what he
- 32:52was doing at Texas Tech in the Big 12.
- 32:55And I mind you that I mean, the Big 12 started to grow more as a
- 32:59humongous basketball conference after Chris Beard had left.
- 33:04But he had Texas Tech doing their thing, like you said, with
- 33:08those two Elite Eights in a national championship.
- 33:12He had Texas Tech at the pinnacle of what Big 12
- 33:17basketball was. So and is so that, I mean, I,
- 33:22that's, that's another part of the Chris Baird saga that you
- 33:26would, you would be looking at. And, and if, if Chris Beard is
- 33:29jumping on to the next program, obviously you've done well at
- 33:32Kansas State. But like you said, what it, like
- 33:34I said, what is the plan? I mean, is there a bigger plan,
- 33:38a long term plan with Chris Beard or is it just to get the
- 33:41program back to going? Because we're, we're coming off
- 33:44of three bad seasons. So something's got to change.
- 33:48Yeah, Yeah, it's an interesting kind of situation because I, I
- 33:52mean, again, if his name's getting floated out there,
- 33:55there's obviously genuine interest.
- 33:59I just don't know how it would be taken if it actually came to
- 34:03fruition. But I guess we'll have to wait
- 34:07and see. You know it.
- 34:11Yeah, it's it's an interesting. One, what's your, what's your
- 34:14thoughts on Holtzman though? I mean.
- 34:17Yeah, I it's unexciting, Yeah. But I think, you know, I read.
- 34:25So if you look at him like his time at Butler and Ohio State,
- 34:31he was in the NCAA tournament every year for a six or
- 34:35seven-year span and he was like a six or seven seed on average.
- 34:42You you would take that like if you're six or seven seed seven
- 34:48years in a row, just, you know, like you really would would want
- 34:54that because you know, yeah, you know, six or seven seed, you're
- 34:59most likely going to, you know, make it to the second round.
- 35:03You upset get to the Sweet 16 out of that.
- 35:06But that's that's a pretty good like success, you know, success
- 35:11statistic to look at the this the thing at the Paul.
- 35:18I I think there's going to be like an automatic, you know,
- 35:21portion of the fan base that's like, I'm lucky we're looking at
- 35:23the head coach at DePaul like because you know what
- 35:27historically DePaul is from a basketball program perspective,
- 35:31but that is probably the toughest job in the Big East,
- 35:35maybe one of the biggest or one of the toughest Power 6
- 35:40basketball jobs. To Is that Chicago?
- 35:44Yeah, it's in Chicago and he has that team in his second year
- 35:51improved. I mean, it's, it's just, it's an
- 35:56unexciting, it's it's not exciting, but you look at the
- 36:01potential coaching candidates and outside of probably two or
- 36:06three that maybe you're in your top tier, it's a very unexciting
- 36:11bunch. Unless you, you know, there's
- 36:17discussions under the rug about, you know, some different coaches
- 36:22across the power 5 that might have interest.
- 36:25So Holman might be end up being a really good one to to come in
- 36:32with proven success in the past. It's just unexciting.
- 36:35I mean, that's. My thing is like, OK, yeah, you
- 36:40could look at the like the recents this recent trend that
- 36:44he has with how bad it ended at Ohio State and where he's at
- 36:48with the Paul. But you got, like you said, you
- 36:52got to look at the stretches that were really, really
- 36:55positive. And he can recruit, man.
- 36:57I mean, a name familiar with people in the Missouri, Kansas
- 37:02region is EJ Liddell. And he took that guy right from
- 37:05under our noses. And I mean, that was a monster,
- 37:08monster recruitment. He was awesome.
- 37:10And he was great with the Buckeyes.
- 37:12I mean, it's just he, he it crashed and burned very similar
- 37:18to how Jerome Tangs was where it was.
- 37:21You know, you had the the real consistent.
- 37:24Well, I guess Jerome Tangs wasn't very consistent, but you
- 37:27had the the highs with the NCAA tournament appearances,
- 37:31obviously not going very deep as far as you'd want, but and then
- 37:36it just stopped. It just like completely stopped.
- 37:39So that worries me. But I, I can envision in him
- 37:44being here, I could honestly see that and head coaching
- 37:48experience something that we need.
- 37:50He knows how to run a program. It's just can he win basketball
- 37:56games as a coach? And putting the staff together
- 38:01also would be kind of fun because I think there would be
- 38:03names that are like that I'm familiar with that would get me
- 38:08involved. Because these guys that, like
- 38:09you said, it's not the who's who of it, the coaching carousel
- 38:15that we're going to see involved with Kansas State, even though
- 38:18we're first to market. It's just like, who are these
- 38:21guys? Who, who, what are we really
- 38:23getting? Because I mean, it's either
- 38:26we're going with Calhoun and I mean, he's had some success at
- 38:31Utah State, but it's, that's it. I mean, that's where he's that's
- 38:35where he's made his hay. And you're putting all your
- 38:37chips on them. That guy.
- 38:40I don't know. I don't know.
- 38:42I think Chris Holtman would. Chris Holtman is probably third.
- 38:47I still have the guy from New Mexico and I'm going to.
- 38:54And I'll stay with Calhoun just because, I mean, everybody is so
- 38:57high on him. There has to be a reason for
- 38:59that. Yeah, maybe I'm, maybe I'm just
- 39:02a, you know, a Gopher. I'm just, I'm going.
- 39:05For it that just. I'll just go for whatever you
- 39:07guys say, but I like Holtzman. I like Holtzman a lot.
- 39:10It's just can he win basketball games as a coach?
- 39:13Because we're we're coming off of Jerome Tang where he didn't
- 39:17coach at all. Yeah.
- 39:19No offense to to him, but like he just wasn't a good in game
- 39:25basketball coach and he didn't have a plan.
- 39:28I think Holtman would have a plan and he'll recruit his ass
- 39:31off, so I like that. You got me.
- 39:36You got me more excited about it.
- 39:39We'll, we'll see. I feel like, you know what,
- 39:41every week we're going to be able to do this.
- 39:43It's going to be. Some that's a that's a follow up
- 39:46question I have for you. When do we need to have this
- 39:49wrapped up? I mean, I don't think there's
- 39:53any way it gets wrapped up until the.
- 39:57End of March. No, it would be earlier than
- 40:00that. I think think so.
- 40:03Well, it's just I I think it's just dependent on where teams
- 40:08land in the post season space. So, you know, for Utah State,
- 40:13they're probably going to the NCAA Tournament and so.
- 40:18The third week of I guess the second to third week of March,
- 40:22you know, I, I think is where you're trying to wrap this up.
- 40:28I'll be it. You know, again, there could be
- 40:31conversations with coaches right now that are in the SEC or Big
- 40:3510, you know, mid schools that may make the NCAA tournament
- 40:39that they, you know, they may not know until the end of March.
- 40:44So I mean, the quicker you wrap this up, the issue with that is
- 40:48why is it so quick? Because ultimately it it is
- 40:53going to get wrapped up when that coach's season is done.
- 40:58And if their season is wrapped up on the first, you know, four
- 41:05day. So Tuesday, like, OK, you're
- 41:09that team made the NCAA tournament.
- 41:10But that's, you know, I don't know, But OK, so like.
- 41:15Chris Holtman's Chris Holtman's timeline for when he got fired
- 41:19at he got fired at Ohio State. He was fired on fired, parted
- 41:27ways with Ohio State on February 14th.
- 41:31That's like a similar story, a similar timeline, and he took
- 41:35the he was hired by DePaul on March 14th.
- 41:41OK. So like if I put that in my my
- 41:45timeline, like I could see that and then you're off and running
- 41:50because I don't. But how was the how was the
- 41:52windows work for basketball for? Portal yeah, I mean, if you're
- 41:56going for a sitting head coach, you're you are at the mercy of
- 42:01the conference tournaments and then whether that coach is
- 42:05coaching in a postseason tournament.
- 42:09So I I think with how that worked with Holtman, obviously
- 42:13was, you know, he was fired and then DePaul, you know, once
- 42:17you're fired, he has the ability to talk to anybody and, you
- 42:20know, got kind of zoomed in with the pulse.
- 42:22So I, I think I mean, you say late March, so you know, that
- 42:26could be like the last week of March.
- 42:29I could easily see the 3rd or 4th week of March.
- 42:33I know K State wants to wrap it up, but I think, you know, they
- 42:37also, I think potentially want to see, you know, the high coach
- 42:41go farther, you know, if that's the case.
- 42:45So, yeah, it'll be be interesting.
- 42:49But we'll be keeping this discussion going out pretty much
- 42:52weekly now until we do hear about who's going to be taking
- 42:56over the cats here for next season.
- 42:59Now, before we get into the last part of our episode, let's go
- 43:03ahead and talk through our second sponsor and my boy Paul
- 43:09Meisbach, who's leading up Heartland Beef Connection.
- 43:12We have been thrilled to have Heartland Beef Connection.
- 43:16Here's a sponsor for Cocaine Willy.
- 43:18Now obviously, folks, we're not talking about grocery store
- 43:22beef. Heartland Beef Connection does
- 43:25connect Kansas and Midwest families directly with local
- 43:27ranchers. So no middle men, no industrial
- 43:30processing and no mass produced beef.
- 43:32A lot of these ranchers located in Kansas, plenty of them are K
- 43:36Staters themselves. So we're really excited to be
- 43:40able to connect these ranchers to individuals and families who
- 43:46are wanting to buy a lot of beef and that we know a lot of people
- 43:52love different types of beef. So Paul has been a friend of the
- 43:55program and he's been a friend of me and Bob's for a long time
- 44:00as members of the same fraternity.
- 44:02But he started Heartland Beef Connection to help support these
- 44:04ranchers and matching them directly with individuals who
- 44:07are looking to buy quarter half or whole beef shares.
- 44:11Here's the part people don't expect.
- 44:12Not only does this beef taste better, it's actually cheaper
- 44:15per pound than any grocery store beef at you would be finding out
- 44:19there when you do buy direct. Better quality, more
- 44:21transparency, and you're not paying for the middle men.
- 44:24So if you care about supporting Kansas agriculture, keeping
- 44:27money local, and eating beef that actually tastes the way
- 44:30beef should, this is it. Because you are listening to
- 44:34cocaine, Willa. You can get $25 off the
- 44:36Heartland Beef Connection match fee when you mention the pod or
- 44:39use the code CW25 at checkout. So do make sure to check out
- 44:45Heartland Beef Connection at heartlandbeef.net.
- 44:48Real beef, real ranchers and better beef for your money.
- 44:52For this week's question, Chef, tell me the best steak you've
- 44:57ever eaten. OK, I had AI think it was a
- 45:0910/10 or 8 oz filet from Cameron Mitchell.
- 45:13It was. I was very hesitant because it,
- 45:19you know, it was literally encrusted with peppercorns and I
- 45:24love pepper and I was like, holy crap.
- 45:28Like it looks like it was rolled in gravel.
- 45:31That's how much peppercorns were on the outside of this.
- 45:34But I mean, when I tell you, you cutting that thing as the most
- 45:39tender filet that I've ever had in my life with a little bit of
- 45:45like like, I don't even know if it was like a a pepper gravy,
- 45:52but it was like some kind of sauce, velvety smooth.
- 45:55And I cut into that thing. And those peppercorns actually
- 45:58just were mild. It wasn't a harsh like black
- 46:03pepper grinder to your face. It was a mild like spice.
- 46:08It was beautiful. I'm going to have to I'm going
- 46:11to look up the because I'm sure it's still on the menu.
- 46:14I'm going to look it up. It's a Cameron Mitchell, though,
- 46:17fire. OK.
- 46:18I don't know. Do you have Cameron?
- 46:21Mitchell's out there. I don't even know what that is.
- 46:24OK, so he's a, he's an Ohio guy. Yeah, for sure.
- 46:29Like you're saying his name like you know, should I know he's?
- 46:33Like a famous chef. Famous chef, famous guy.
- 46:36Well, I'll give a shout out to my buddy up in New York.
- 46:41He made one of the best steaks I've ever had in my entire life.
- 46:44And you know the cooking process?
- 46:47Sous video, a sous video and a seer it is.
- 46:53I love it. It was buttery, like so soft, I
- 46:59mean incredible. Like I, I, I really think, you
- 47:03know, you can get, you know, like you don't have to go to an
- 47:08expensive steakhouse to have steak.
- 47:10You just need a cast iron pan. And then if you have a sous
- 47:13video, that's helpful. I mean, if not though, you know,
- 47:18you put it, you cook in the cast iron, baste it, butter, herbs,
- 47:25herbs, Rosemary. I want a hard sear on mine.
- 47:28I want a hard. Sear, yeah.
- 47:31I need a crust. I need a.
- 47:33Crust, yeah. It is.
- 47:36It is essential, yeah. You get that sous V probably
- 47:39around 120, I'd say 129°, 129. You get that 129° sous video
- 47:50steak for two hours with some butter and the Rosemary and
- 47:55thyme in the bag. Underrated a slice of onion in
- 48:00there as well. I think that brings a lot of
- 48:03flavors to it. You get that and you put you get
- 48:07that out of the sous video. Get it on some paper towels, dry
- 48:11it down, put it on a plate and let that baby rest over there.
- 48:14Let it get familiar with the air.
- 48:17Let let that baby sit over. There for a while, familiar with
- 48:20the air. Get it familiar with the air.
- 48:23You want that moisture to stay there, just right there.
- 48:27You want it to dry out on the outside.
- 48:29Because then when you throw that baby in a ripping hot pan,
- 48:34searing it off, get that hard sear on there, and then you can
- 48:37turn your temperature down to probably like a two or three,
- 48:41get that butter in there and just start basting over the top.
- 48:44With the garlic. With the garlic.
- 48:47Oh. Man, that's.
- 48:48A and then you take it out of that ripping hot pan and you sit
- 48:52it on a wire rack and you let that baby get familiar with the
- 48:55air again. You want those juices to stay in
- 48:58there. You do.
- 48:59Not want to cut. Directly into that steak.
- 49:02Do not do that. That is a mistake by many, many,
- 49:08you know, venturing chefs as to you, you're hungry as hell.
- 49:12You want to get right to that steak.
- 49:13Don't cut into that baby yet, especially if you're talking
- 49:17with a steak probably about over an inch and 1/2 in thickness.
- 49:21The juices are in there, brother.
- 49:23You can't let those babies out. And then when you let that baby
- 49:27rest for, let that baby rest for 10 minutes.
- 49:31Got into it. Now you're ready to devour.
- 49:33Man, that's a perfect medium rare steak with a hard sear and
- 49:37garlic flavor throughout with the juices preserved.
- 49:41God damn, I got me one steak. Yeah, you can catch Chef on his
- 49:46alternate podcast. Everything about the meat.
- 49:49Oh my God. Oh anyway, the QR code up in the
- 50:00top left, that is Heartland Beef Connection.
- 50:02Glad to have Paul and Heartland Beef as a sponsor.
- 50:07Let's go ahead for the last part of our show called Shooting the
- 50:10Shit, which admittingly, as we are getting into the month of
- 50:15March, everyone's favorite, maybe favorite college playoff
- 50:20series known as the NCAA Tournament is upcoming in three
- 50:25weeks. And crazy enough, Big 12 looking
- 50:31really good, potentially going to have eight teams in the NCAA
- 50:34tournament per Joe Leonardi's bracketology that did come out
- 50:39today. 8 The 8 schools, Arizona, Houston, Iowa State's Texas
- 50:45Tech, Kansas, BYUUCF, and TCU is in the last four teams in the
- 50:52tournament, which is kind of crazy considering what I've seen
- 50:56from TCU here recently. But with looking at this from
- 51:02the Big 12 perspective, since majority of our listeners are
- 51:05going to be Big 12 focused out of the eight teams, and I'm
- 51:10going to say don't count TCU in this.
- 51:12So you have 7 teams. What team do you think is going
- 51:16to get upset early in the NCAA Tournament this year?
- 51:21OK so this is going to sound like I'm completely hating for
- 51:26rivalry purposes only but Kansas I could see them if what is his
- 51:31name? Is it Peterson or Patterson?
- 51:33Darren Peterson? Darren Peterson is not locked in
- 51:37as you know preserving himself and is only playing 18 minutes a
- 51:40game. They could see themselves
- 51:43getting booted quick. I mean, they do have a very
- 51:46talented team money. They are really, really good.
- 51:49They're not the best Kansas team that we've seen in a long time,
- 51:52but Peterson definitely adds something to that team because
- 51:58his talent is is undeniable. It is very undeniable and it and
- 52:04it and I would say 1A is Kansas 1B is BYU because if the bonds
- 52:10is in foul trouble and now he gives his all every time he
- 52:13steps on that court and he's on a historic run right now with
- 52:17BYU. He's putting up some video game
- 52:20my player 2K numbers right now. If he is, if he's in foul
- 52:27trouble or something, you know, no knock on wood that something
- 52:30happens to him or whatever. BYU outside of him is really,
- 52:35really limited. So I could see that definitely
- 52:39being the one A1B scenario for me.
- 52:43Man Kansas is obviously like an extremely interesting team
- 52:48because they are just they could be completely shit at Kansas
- 52:55Cincinnati game and then two nights later dominate a Houston
- 53:00team that I mean Houston's been on a little bit of AI think
- 53:06they've lost. I want to say their last three
- 53:09games yeah, they've lost their last three games.
- 53:13I'll be it. It was against two teams in the
- 53:16top ten and then Kansas who was in the top 15.
- 53:21But I the NCAA tournament has just been such like a tough like
- 53:28for the past few years for KU and I don't know, yeah, if
- 53:33you're gonna get Peterson at his full and Kansas will probably be
- 53:39like a four seed. And we've seen what happened in
- 53:42the past with that. So I, I was gonna say Kansas and
- 53:49I was also gonna say BYU because Richie Saunders not being on,
- 53:54you know, he's out for the rest of the season for BYU.
- 53:58That's a team that is very talented.
- 54:01But Richie Saunders was kind of one of the, I would say the most
- 54:04underrated players in the Big 12 because he was very much being
- 54:08overshadowed by AJ Debansa. So BYU will probably be like a
- 54:13six seed. And I, you know, I that's kind
- 54:18of a classic like, you know, 611 matchup or 611 matchup.
- 54:24So I you'll trend for Kansas for your one, AI will pick BYU as
- 54:30the team that I think is going to get upset early.
- 54:34And where? Where did they have Texas Tech
- 54:35penciled in at? What seed?
- 54:38Because I don't know. That would even be an upset
- 54:41because, you know, with top and they they, I like how they
- 54:44brought that up versus the in the Kansas State game.
- 54:47They were talking about like the the, you know, the people that
- 54:52are putting the tournament together have the ability to,
- 54:56you know, project what they see with Texas Tech and going to
- 55:00really affect, even if they're winning games, what they look
- 55:03like without topping. So I mean, that's probably my
- 55:07strong too, because they have they have they have a good
- 55:11strong guard. But if they're if they're not a
- 55:14higher seed, you know, I don't see them how it would even be an
- 55:18upset. They're projected as a four seed
- 55:22as of right now, Texas Tech. So they're they are also kind of
- 55:27an interesting team. I think where we will be able to
- 55:29really judge is the Big 12 tournament and how that might go
- 55:34to to really kind of see. But Tech is one of those teams
- 55:38that I think, you know, you lose, you lose the best player
- 55:45in the Big 12 and you would expect that they're going to
- 55:47kind of, you know, take a falling off, but they may not
- 55:50miss a beat and, you know, kind of figure it out, especially
- 55:53with Christian Andersen at the point.
- 55:57My next question. So thinking about those eight
- 55:59teams, what is a team that will go on a run?
- 56:02And what I would say here is maybe don't pick like Arizona,
- 56:06who's going to be a one seed, but thinking about a team that
- 56:12you think may go on a run I can start.
- 56:18So I think looking at all these teams I hate I this is another
- 56:25one that I kind of hate to say, but I think I.
- 56:27Was the. I think Iowa State is going to
- 56:30be watching Iowa State. First off, the game that they
- 56:35played last Monday was an exceptional game when they were
- 56:41playing Houston and Ames obviously won that kind of
- 56:45really with last minute or so. But I look at that team and I
- 56:50think this team, as long as they have everybody healthy, I think
- 56:55is built to win games in the NCAA Tournament.
- 56:58You have a guy in Manchilovich who is an incredible scorer,
- 57:02especially from three. Joshua Jefferson has been
- 57:06really, really good. Buchanan and then obviously
- 57:09Lipsy at the point if TJ Alterberger is going to fight.
- 57:15Like I, I feel like this is the year almost kind of like, you
- 57:18know, Purdue and like Matt Painter not being able to get
- 57:21his team into the Final Four. You know, this and that.
- 57:24They've always been upset. I think this is the year that
- 57:27Iowa State really has to like make make something happen
- 57:30because Lipsy obviously graduates after this year.
- 57:34I'm Shilovich is probably going to the NBA.
- 57:37You I think you really kind of have to make a run here to get
- 57:42the Final Four or at least to the Elite 8.
- 57:44So I am going with Iowa State as that team.
- 57:48Yeah, and I would go Iowa State as well.
- 57:51That's like where my head went directly to.
- 57:55I think because of their success in a regular season, they're
- 57:59going to have such a good seating and depending on what
- 58:02region they are, you know, they're good.
- 58:04Their fans are going to travel. That is going to be an absolute
- 58:07show when Iowa State is really, really moving in the NCAA
- 58:11tournament. And I don't know where who's
- 58:14hosting this year, but they'll probably get some two games in
- 58:18the Midwest that are just absolutely packed full with Iowa
- 58:21State fans. But obviously the team that I
- 58:25would also think that would go on a run because this is just
- 58:27what they've proven that they do, is Houston.
- 58:31Houston is one of those teams that they've they've proven it,
- 58:36they've done it. Obviously they've gone on a lot,
- 58:38a rough three games. Two of them have been somewhat
- 58:42close. I, I think they got handled.
- 58:45Obviously they got handled by Kansas, but I they're going to
- 58:51finish up these last three games.
- 58:53They're going to dominate these last three games and then going
- 58:55into the Big 12 tournament, they could just get hot.
- 58:58They can start shooting the lights out.
- 58:59These are it's just one of those teams that it's well-rounded and
- 59:05it's it's brought together by arguably this a top three coach
- 59:11in the Big 12 and probably a top five coach or you know, yeah,
- 59:16top. Is he a top 10 coach in the
- 59:18country? Yeah, I would say he's top 10
- 59:20coach in the country. Samson.
- 59:22Yeah, yeah. Is he, is he what?
- 59:25Where do you have him in the Big 12?
- 59:28Is he one? Is he 2?
- 59:30I think he's probably two or three.
- 59:33I think selves won. I think selves won but I would
- 59:38probably put him at 2:00. Who your Your other options are
- 59:44Tommy Lloyd. Lloyd, that's where I was also
- 59:47go, but he hasn't really proven much recently.
- 59:51Yeah, they got to the Elite 8 last year.
- 59:54Did they? I don't remember.
- 59:57They're a. Really good.
- 59:58They're a really good basketball.
- 59:59Yeah, yeah. Even though that was part of the
- 1:00:02dealer right now. Oh geez, I don't know, but.
- 1:00:08Yeah, give me, give me Houston. I I just, you've got to have you
- 1:00:12got to be able to prove it. And they've proven it over the
- 1:00:15years that they know what to do in March and how they can go on
- 1:00:19run. So I think it's, it's always
- 1:00:21kind of set up for a team like Houston.
- 1:00:23It's it's just, that's just in their DNA.
- 1:00:25So I'm going to, I'm going to go Iowa State and I'm going to go
- 1:00:29to Houston. So those are my 2.
- 1:00:31Those are my 2. Runners all right, perfect.
- 1:00:34And then my last question and I in the script I did put it what
- 1:00:39team makes it to the Final four? But I actually want What team do
- 1:00:42you think makes it to the national championship game?
- 1:00:47Hodge I would have to. I mean, it just depends on draws
- 1:00:54to me, man, it's crazy. How how?
- 1:00:59Yeah, the eye test, I would say depending on what Houston does,
- 1:01:04like I think they can go on runs in March, man, I think they're
- 1:01:06good. Arizona is a real heavy
- 1:01:09favorite. They're just so big.
- 1:01:12They're just so strong and they're, I thought they were an
- 1:01:15older team. They're not.
- 1:01:18They're not they're. Somewhat young.
- 1:01:22I mean, it's NBA talent, so that probably won't be there very
- 1:01:24much longer. But man, they're so big.
- 1:01:28So give me Arizona as probably the team that's kind of going to
- 1:01:32be in the national championship. They, they just, they'll
- 1:01:35probably get to the, they'll probably get to the tournament.
- 1:01:39They'll probably have one close game.
- 1:01:41And then they're just going to smother other teams like they're
- 1:01:43going to smother them to death. They're going to be out West the
- 1:01:46entire time. And I'm, I'm going to look it up
- 1:01:50now. I'm just going to look up who's
- 1:01:51hosting the NCAA tournament this year, but I'm going to go
- 1:01:54Arizona. Yeah, well, Arizona was going to
- 1:01:57be mine too because I said at the beginning of basketball
- 1:02:00season that Arizona was going to win the national championship.
- 1:02:04So I'm going to be picking it, picking them.
- 1:02:07But I mean the the one thing that I will say about Arizona,
- 1:02:12because Co Pete has not been playing for that team, but they
- 1:02:18they are just really good across the board.
- 1:02:21And the incredible thing about it.
- 1:02:24And I just pulled up the roster because I just think about like
- 1:02:28roster construction and how for K State, they pulled this, you
- 1:02:31know, they kind of went overseas, you know, and you
- 1:02:35know, recruited this year. Just get where these players
- 1:02:40from Arizona, Netherlands, England, Australia, France,
- 1:02:45Senegal, Germany, Lithuania, South Sudan.
- 1:02:49It sounds like a guy that's coached at Gonzaga.
- 1:02:53Yeah, exactly that. Like it all like makes sense.
- 1:02:56It all 100% makes sense, but like he just has done such a
- 1:03:02great job of kind of trying to mold and mold and kind of be
- 1:03:07like Mark few, but do it at a little bit of a different
- 1:03:10environment. This He is also a guy that has
- 1:03:13to make it to the final four this year.
- 1:03:15Like, I if you get upset in the Sweet 16 or I, I mean, even the
- 1:03:22Elite 8, you it's not, it's not going to be great because people
- 1:03:28are going to continuously talk about how Tommy Lloyd can't do
- 1:03:31anything in the NCAA Tournament. So it almost might be a blessing
- 1:03:36to lose early in the Big 12 tournament this year.
- 1:03:38Like it might. It might.
- 1:03:40Be the thing about like he's not he'll never have those teams
- 1:03:46that are upset like, well, this team in particular is not a team
- 1:03:51that's going to get upset early because those teams that get
- 1:03:55upset super early, like versus like a team like, I don't know,
- 1:03:58just throw a team out there Princeton or like Belmont or
- 1:04:02something like that. Those teams that are well oiled
- 1:04:04machines that just run their stuff and get you in situations
- 1:04:10where if they're not shooting good from three and the other
- 1:04:14team is, they're going to lose. This team's so big and athletic.
- 1:04:19They're not like a Purdue where it's Zach Edie who's a statue
- 1:04:23and then a bunch of other non super athletic guys.
- 1:04:29These guys are freaks from top to bottom and they're they're
- 1:04:33just going to smother teams. I I honestly think that is it's
- 1:04:37kind of been written that it's going to be like this, But I
- 1:04:41think if they're shooting all right, they're just going to
- 1:04:45bludgeon people to death. And the, the, the sites, by the
- 1:04:50way, are Buffalo, NY, Greenville, SC, OK C, Portland
- 1:04:56OR, Tampa, FL, Philly, San Diego and San Jose.
- 1:05:01So they're going to probably stay out in San Diego or San.
- 1:05:05Jose, San Diego. Yeah.
- 1:05:07And then then it's DC and Illinois for the, you know, the
- 1:05:13regionals, which doesn't seem right because there should be
- 1:05:16two more, right? Well, no San Jose, they're they
- 1:05:20would be San Jose. San Jose is a regional site.
- 1:05:26Is it? So Bracketology is putting them
- 1:05:28in San Diego and then San Jose. For the regional, So yeah, OK.
- 1:05:34And then it's then it's Indy for the final four.
- 1:05:37Yeah. Which I don't like, but that's
- 1:05:39fine. You know.
- 1:05:41Yeah, they're they're going to stay out West the entire time
- 1:05:44until they have to get to Indianapolis.
- 1:05:46Yeah, they'll be again. I thought they're are going to
- 1:05:52win so. Well, Kansas State in two
- 1:05:55seasons. Well, in case, maybe next
- 1:05:57season, maybe next season, Chris Holtman will have us rolling.
- 1:06:05And that should do it. This is a good.
- 1:06:11This is a good pod. This was a good.
- 1:06:12Pod. No, that's good.
- 1:06:14Yeah, well, I know for me, this is my last pod for a couple
- 1:06:19weeks as I'm on vacation next week.
- 1:06:21But Bob and Chef will be leading everyone as we get closer to
- 1:06:27figuring out who our next head coach is.
