Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Jacksonville Jack Wars fans welcome in to do vault daily presented by Gen Jack dot com and fueled by brass tax coffee Thanks so much for being here Thursday June 18th right now We are talking Ross Madison and his contract extension very exciting for him obviously
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: He will now be under contract through the 2028 season.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: I believe with the Jacksonville Jaguars He was under contract through 2026 and now again Through 2028, which I think that's awesome.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: I really do and This is just another example shining example of the Jaguars valuing special teams and that has been
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: evident for a while, um, but I think since the last regime kind of folded, if you will, and Trimbalki and Doug Peterson wasn't packing, Doug Peterson first, Trimbalki is a little bit later on, but special teams has been a major focus, and it was before that as well, but Liam Cohen being an offensive coach, you know, a new head coach,
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: not allowing special teams to fall by the wayside and really from the top down from ownership on down they have been special teams focused like and I appreciate that.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think you need to over-leverage yourself on special teams, but I think they're appropriately addressing special teams and valuing special teams.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_00]: One of the big things shotgun in the Jaguar's ownership group wanted to make sure they were doing when they decided to move on from bulky and Peterson everything was keep he's far well in the building.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: They wanted to keep he's far well who is a really, really good special teams coach.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody that I think the bills, you know,
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: made a poor decision to let him go and come down to Jacksonville in it.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: Jacksonville's benefit.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's been awesome.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's one of the big reasons that Cam Little is here.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a Cam Little in a big way and really wanted him in Jacksonville.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: But Ross Mattisix contract is just
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: making sure you're taking care of players who are very good and making sure you're taking care of special teams.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: And they've done that.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: Both of those things, to me, since this new group got in here with Tony Bicelli, James Lodstown, Liam Cohen, in a really impressive way.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: So again, Mattisick was under contract through 2026.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: Now under contract through 2028 to your extension.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, long snappers ain't making big, big money, but he is
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: Arguably the best long snapper and football, right?
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to pretend to study all the different long snappers out there, but routinely towards the top of the league and tackles amongst long snappers, uh, proble over the last three years, even more impressive, 25.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: first team all proud twenty twenty three first team all proud twenty twenty four he was only second team out of down here right now uh... he's meant first or second team each of the last three seasons twenty nine years old uh... just about as impressive as it gets as far as long sappers go and again bringing him back for the next couple years after twenty twenty six i think is awesome great for him great for the team
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I think Cohen was just talking about how Ross Madison was saying this is the closest group he's ever been with as a team in his career.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: So he's a team guy.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's part of that special team's group and important part of it, but Cam Little as I mentioned being basically scouted out by by Heath Farwell and brought in and has arguably the biggest leg in the league.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, on paper, he certainly does with the records that he has set.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: Longest outdoor kick, longest indoor kick, longest preseason kick.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: Cam Little is just such an awesome player.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: Logan Cook has been a model of consistency.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: Murray's getting excited over here.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: Model of consistency as the punner.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: So those are your like three big names on special teams but beyond that.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they have replenished and replenished and replenished on special teams over and over and over and over again from the coverage to guys that can get it done in other ways.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like Wesley Williams, who major impact on field goal blocks and disrupting field goal attempts throughout his college career at Duke and,
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you know, so many draft picks they've brought in.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: They're guys that they believe could contribute a certain area of the team offense, defense, etc.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: But they're guys that they also believe can contribute at a high level on special teams.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, just look at the last couple years since James Ladsson and Liam Cohen have been here.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: Josh Cameron this year, they think is going to return return kicks for them.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: They think he can do a good job with that.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: Jack Kaiser was a core for a special teamer.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: That was obviously 2025.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: Ray Online was, I mean, a lot of people have viewed him as the best special teams prospect in the 2025 NFL draft, the safety at a Navy.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think you look at
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: at Parker Hughes.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: The linebacker they drafted in the seventh round this year.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: Clearly going to be a special teams player early in his career.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: So again, this just all goes back to how much the Jaguars value special teams.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's going to serve them well.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: I really do.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: Having Heath Farwell, having a guy like Ross Madison, having...
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: little and and cook and all these guys who can contribute at a high level on special teams is going to help them win football games.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: I've been so impressed with this regime's because Liam Cohen has literally talked about how as a head coach he has to for the first time really worry about if we're keeping this player how is he contributing on special teams and
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, he's been aided and assisted by Heath Farwell by James Gladstone who has had to take a bigger picture look at these things in his role in the past, you know, helping out less need and in Los Angeles, but.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's been awesome to see, and I'm excited to see the special teams continue to grow.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: We haven't even mentioned Parker Washington.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: Is he going to be returning puns this year for the Jaguars?
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: He far will talk about it.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: It would hate to lose him as a partner turning because of how dynamic and how good he is, but if he's needed more on offense and they don't feel like they absolutely need him back there because they have other good guys that can do the job, you'll get it.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I would get it too.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: It would be sad to not see Parker back there just because like,
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: He had three legitimate part return touchdowns last year.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: One of them was inadvertently mistakenly called back by the officiating crew over in London when the Jaguars were playing the Rams, but such a dynamic returner, impactful returner.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Parker Washington is.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see if he goes back there or not.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: I know that he needs to play receiver.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Jaguar should be looking to extend his contract right now, same thing with Britain's trained.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: But Antonio Johnson's been a great special team or two another guy who could get extended this off season if they see fit.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I just, I love the emphasis on special teams.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think it,
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's overlooked by almost everyone who evaluates the game of football and a high level evaluates the NFL.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: I never hear like when you're no matter where you're looking, the athletic ESPN.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: You name it, NFL.com.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: I don't hear anybody talking about special teams and the importance of special teams.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: Talk about the offense, talk about the defense, the quarterback, the ad coach, the defense of coordinator maybe, but like offensive coordinator, nobody's talking about defense or special teams.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: And it should be a bigger topic because it's very important part of the game.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: Even if things have changed a bit over the years, it's still a massively important part of the game.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: and the jackwars have done a great job ensuring that their special teams will be good in the present over the last couple of years and for years to come and so kudos to them kudos to Ross Matasik for being you know again arguably the best long snapper and football somebody who you can consistently rely on getting down the field after he snaps it and being able to make a positive impact making a tackle or filling a lane or whatever it may be down there so
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: Shout out to the jacks for getting it done.
