- 0:31app, But just to make it easy, I've left a link for you in the
- 0:35show notes. Today's quote comes from Rick
- 0:39Warren, pastor, author and the man behind The Purpose Driven
- 0:44Life, one of the best selling non fiction books ever written.
- 0:48He once said wearing a mask wears you out.
- 0:54Faking it is fatiguing. The most exhausting activity is
- 0:59pretending to be who you know you aren't.
- 1:03Three sentences, each one building on the last.
- 1:08And by the time you reach that final line, the most exhausting
- 1:13activity, you feel it somewhere deep.
- 1:16Because almost everyone knows exactly what he's talking about.
- 1:21Here's the thing about masks. Put them on for understandable
- 1:26reasons. We want to be light.
- 1:29We want to fit in. We want to project confidence
- 1:33when we feel uncertain, calm when we feel anxious, and
- 1:38successful when we're struggling.
- 1:40The mask feels like protection, And in the short term, it is.
- 1:45But Warren is pointing at the hidden cost.
- 1:50Maintaining a version of yourself that isn't true
- 1:52requires constant, unrelenting effort.
- 1:57Every interaction becomes a performance.
- 2:00Every conversation requires monitoring.
- 2:04Am I saying the right thing? Showing the right face?
- 2:09Keeping the story consistent? When you wear a mask for long
- 2:14enough, it becomes difficult to breathe.
- 2:17Your whole being feels like it's trying to escape from the
- 2:20costume. And here's the paradox.
- 2:24The mask is supposed to make things easier.
- 2:27Instead, it makes everything harder.
- 2:30Because authenticity, simply being who you actually are,
- 2:35requires no maintenance at all. You don't have to remember what
- 2:40you said. You don't have to manage what
- 2:43people see, you just show up as yourself and let that be enough.
- 2:49The exhaustion Warren is describing is not physical, it's
- 2:53the deep bone level fatigue that comes from the gap between who
- 2:57you are and who you're pretending to be.
- 3:01The wider that gap gets, the heavier you carry it.
- 3:06So here's the question, What mask are you wearing right now
- 3:10that's costing you more than you realize?
- 3:13Because the energy you're spending maintaining it, that's
- 3:18energy that belongs to you. It could be going into something
- 3:22that actually matters, something that actually moves your life
- 3:26forward. Take that mask off because the
- 3:30most rested, most energized, most alive version of you has
- 3:36always been the real one. That's it for today.
- 3:41I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 3:46tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:52with another daily quote.
