Chapter thirteen. In this chapter we have a further account concerning Abram numeral one,
0:07
in general of his condition and behavior in the Land of Promise, which
0:11
was now the land of his pilgrimage number one, His removes Verses one,
0:17
three, four, and eighteen number two, his riches verse two, number
0:22
three, his devotion Verses four and eighteen numeral two. A particular account of
0:28
a quarrel that happened between him and Lot number one, the unhappy occasion of
0:33
their strife verses five and six number two, the parties concerned in the strife
0:39
with the aggravation of it Verse seven numeral three. The making up of the
0:44
quarrel by the prudence of Abram Verses eight and nine numeral four. Lot's departure
0:50
from Abram to the Plain of Sodom Verses ten through thirteen Numeral five. God's
0:56
appearance to Abram to confirm the promise of the land of Canaan to him Verse
1:00
fourteen, et cetera. Abram's removal to Canaan b. C. One thousand,
1:07
nine hundred eighteen Verses one through four. And Abram went up out of
1:14
Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with
1:18
him into the south. And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver,
1:22
and in gold. And he went on his journeys from the south even
1:26
to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning between
1:29
Bethel and high unto the place of the altar which he had made there at
1:34
the first And there Abram called on the name of the Lord Numeral one.
1:40
Here is Abram's return out of Egypt. Verse one. He came himself and
1:44
brought all his with him back again to Canaan. Note, though there may
1:49
be occasion to go sometimes into places of temptation, yet we must hasten out
1:53
of them as soon as possible. See Ruth one, verse six, Numeral
1:59
two. His wealth, he was very rich. Verse two he was very
2:04
heavy. So the Hebrew word signifies, for riches are a burden, and
2:07
those that will be rich, do but load themselves with thick clay Habakuk two
2:13
six. There is a burden of care in getting them, fear and keeping
2:16
them, temptation in using them, guilt in abusing them, sorrow in losing
2:22
them, and a burden of account at last to be given up concerning them.
2:27
Great possessions do but make men heavy and unwield thee. Abram was not
2:31
only rich in faith and good works and in the promises, but he was
2:35
rich in cattle and in silver and gold. Note number one. God,
2:40
in his providence sometimes makes good men rich men, and teaches them how to
2:45
abound, as well as how to suffer want Number two. The riches of
2:49
good men are the fruits of God's blessing. God has said to Abram,
2:53
I will bless thee, and that blessing made him rich without sorrow. Roverbs
2:58
ten twenty two. Number three. True piety will very well consist with great
3:02
prosperity. Though it is hard for a rich man to get to heaven,
3:07
yet it is not impossible Mark ten twenty three and twenty four. Abram was
3:12
very rich and yet very religious. Nay as piety as a friend to outward
3:16
prosperity one Timothy four eight. So outward prosperity, if well managed, is
3:23
an ornament to piety, and furnishes an opportunity of doing so much the more
3:28
good Numeral three. His removal to Bethel Verses three and four. Thither he
3:34
went not only because there he had formerly had his tent, and he was
3:38
willing to go among his old acquaintance, But because there he had formerly had
3:42
his altar, and though the altar was gone, probably he himself having taken
3:46
it down when he left the place, lest it should be polluted by the
3:50
idolatrous Canaanites. Yet he came to the place of the altar, either to
3:53
revive the remembrance of the sweet communion he had had with God in that place,
3:58
or perhaps to pay the vows he had made to God when he undertook
4:00
his journey into Egypt. Long afterwards, God sent Jacob to this, saying
4:06
place on that errand Chapter thirty five, Verse one, go up to Bethel,
4:11
where thou vow'st the vow we have need to be reminded, and should
4:15
take all occasions to remind ourselves of our solemn vows. And perhaps the place
4:19
where they were made may help to bring them afresh to mind, And it
4:24
may therefore do us good to visit it Numeral four. His devotion there,
4:30
his altar was gone, so that he could not offer sacrifice, but he
4:32
called on the name of the Lord as he had done. Chapter twelve,
4:35
verse eight, Note number one. All God's people are praying people. You
4:43
may as soon find a living man without breath as a living Christian without prayer.
4:47
Number two, those that would approve themselves upright with their God must be
4:51
constant and persevering in the services of religion. Abram did not leave his religion
4:57
behind him in Egypt, as many do in their te travels. Number Three.
5:01
When we cannot do what we would, we must make conscience of doing
5:05
what we can in the acts of devotion. When we want an altar,
5:09
let us not be wanting in prayer, but wherever we are, call on
5:13
the name of the Lord. Lot's separation from Abram b. C. One
5:18
thousand, nine hundred and seventeen, Verses five through nine. And Lot also,
5:26
which went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents, and the
5:30
land was not able to bear them that they might dwell together, for their
5:33
substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. And there was
5:38
a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle.
5:42
And the Canaanite and the Perizite dwelled then in the land. And Abram said,
5:46
unto Lot, let there be no strife. I pray thee between me
5:50
and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdman. For we be brethren.
5:55
Is not the whole land before THEE separate thyself. I pray THEE from
6:00
me. If thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to
6:02
the right, Or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will
6:05
go to the left. We have here an unhappy falling out between Abram and
6:11
Lot, who had hitherto been inseparable companions see verse one and Chapter twelve,
6:15
verse four, but now parted Numeral one. The occasion of their quarrel was
6:21
their riches. We read verse two how rich Abram was. Now here we
6:27
are told verse five that Lot, who went with Abram, was rich too,
6:30
and therefore God blessed him with riches because he went with Abram. Note
6:34
number one. It is good being in good company and going with those with
6:39
whom God is Zechariah eight, verse twenty three. Number two. Those that
6:44
are partners with God's people in their obedience and sufferings shall be sharers with them
6:48
in their joys and comforts Isaiah sixty six, verse ten. Now they both
6:54
being very rich, the land was not able to bear them that they might
6:57
dwell comfortably and peaceably. Together, so that their riches may be considered Subscript
7:01
one as setting them at a distance one from another. Because the place was
7:05
too straight for them, and they had not room for their stock, it
7:09
was necessary they should live asunder. Note every comfort in this world has its
7:14
cross attending it. Business is a comfort, but it has this inconvenience in
7:17
it that it allows us not the society of those we love so often,
7:21
nor so long as we could wish. Subscript two, as setting them at
7:27
variance one with another. Note. Riches are often an occasion of strife and
7:30
contention among relations and neighbors. This is one of those foolish and hurtful lusts
7:35
which those that will be rich fall into. Vers. Timothy six, Verse
7:40
nine. Riches not only afford matter for contention, and are the things most
7:44
commonly striven about, but they also stir up a spirit of contention by making
7:48
people proud and Covetous meum and tuum, mine and thine are the great make
7:54
bates of the world. Poverty and travail ones and wanderings could not separate between
8:00
Abram and lot, but riches did. Friends are soon lost, but God
8:05
is a friend from whose love neither the height of prosperity, nor the depth
8:07
of adversity shall separate us. Numeral two. The immediate instruments of the quarrel
8:13
were their servants. The strife began between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the
8:18
herdsmen of Lot's cattle Verse seven. They strove it is probable which should have
8:24
the better pasture or the better water, and both interested their masters in the
8:28
quarrel. Note. Bad servants often make a great deal of mischief in families
8:33
by the pride and passion their lyings, landering, and tale bearing. It
8:37
is a very wicked thing for servants to do ill offices between relations and neighbors,
8:41
and to so discord. Those that do so are the devil's agents and
8:45
their master's worst enemies. Numeral three. The aggravation of the quarrel was that
8:50
the Canaanite and the Parizite dwelt then in the land. This made the quarrel
8:56
Number one very dangerous. If Abram and Lot cannot agree to feed their flocks
9:01
together, it is well if the common enemy do not come upon them and
9:03
plunder them both. Note the division of families and churches often proves the ruin
9:09
of them. Number two very scandalous, no doubt, the eyes of all
9:13
the neighbors were upon them, especially because of the singularity of their religion and
9:18
the extraordinary sanctity they professed. And notice would soon be taken of this quarrel
9:22
an improvement made of it to their reproach by the Canaanites and Parizites. Note
9:28
the quarrels of professors are the reproach of profession, and give occasion as much
9:33
as anything to the enemies of the Lord to Blaspheme Numeral four. The making
9:37
up of this quarrel was very happy. It is best to preserve the peace,
9:41
that it be not broken. But the next best is, if differences
9:46
do happen, with all speed, to accommodate them and quench the fire that
9:50
is broken out. The motion for staying this strife was made by Abram,
9:54
though he was the senior and superior relation Verse eight, number one. His
9:58
petition for peace was very affectionate. Let there be not strife, I pray
10:03
thee Abram here shows himself to be a man subscript, one of a cool
10:07
spirit that had the command of his passion and knew how to turn away wrath
10:11
with the soft answer. Those that would keep the peace, must never render
10:16
railing for railing. Subscript two. Of a condescending spirit. He was willing
10:22
to beseech even his inferior to be at peace, and made the first overture
10:26
of reconciliation. Conquerors reckon it their glory to give peace by power, and
10:31
it is no less so to give peace by the meekness of wisdom. Note
10:35
the people of God should always approve themselves a peaceable people. Whatever others are
10:39
for, they must be for peace. Number two. His plea for peace
10:45
was very cogent. Subscript one. Let there be no strife between me and
10:50
THEE. Let the Canaanites and parasites contend about trifles, but let not THEE
10:54
and me fall out, who know better things and look for a better country.
10:58
Note for professors of religion should of all others be careful to avoid contention.
11:03
You shall not be so, Luke twenty two, verse twenty six.
11:07
We have no such custom. First Corinthians eleven, verse sixteen. Let there
11:11
be no strife between me and THEE, who have lived together and loved one
11:16
another so long. Note the remembrance of old friendships should quickly put an end
11:22
to new quarrels which at any time happen. Subscript two, Let it be
11:26
remembered that we are brethren Hebrew. We are men, brethren a double argument.
11:31
Sub Point one. We are men, and as men, we are
11:35
mortal creatures. We may die tomorrow and are concerned to be found in peace.
11:39
We are rational creatures and should be ruled by reason. We are men
11:43
and not brutes, men and not children. We are sociable creatures. Let
11:48
us be so to the uttermost. Sub Point two. We are brethren,
11:52
men of the same nature, of the same kindred and family, of the
11:56
same religion. Companions and obedience, campaigninions, and patience. Note the consideration
12:03
of our relation to each other as brethren should always prevail to moderate our passions,
12:07
and either to prevent or put an end to our contentions. Brethren should
12:11
love as brethren. Number three. His proposal for peace was very fair.
12:16
Many who profess to be for peace yet will do nothing towards it. But
12:20
Abram hereby approved himself a real friend to peace. That he proposed an unexceptional
12:26
expedient for the preserving of it is not the whole land before thee verse nine,
12:31
As if he had said, why should we quarrel for room, while
12:35
there is room enough for us both Subscript one. He concludes that they must
12:39
part, and is very desirous that they should part. Friends, separate thyself.
12:43
I pray thee from me. What could be expressed more affectionately. He
12:48
does not expel him and force him away, but advises that he should separate
12:52
himself, nor does he charge him to depart, but humbly desires him to
12:56
withdraw. Note those that have power to command, yet some times, for
13:00
love's sake and peace sake, should rather beseech as Paul bassot Phi Lehman verse
13:05
eight nine. When the Great God condescends to beseech us, we may well
13:09
afford to beseech one another to be reconciled. Second Corinthians five, verse twenty.
13:16
Subscript two. He offers him a sufficient share of the land they were
13:20
in, though God had promised Abraham to give this land to a seed Chapter
13:24
twelve, verse seven, and it does not appear that ever, any such
13:28
promise was made to Lot, which Abram might have insisted on to the total
13:31
exclusion of Lot. Yet he allows him to come in partner with him,
13:35
and tenders an equal share to one that had not an equal right, and
13:39
will not make God's promise to patronize his quarrel, nor under the protection of
13:43
that, but any hardship on his kinsmen. Subscript three. He gives him
13:48
his choice and offers to take up with his leavings. If thou wilt take
13:52
the left hand, I will go to the right. There was all the
13:56
reason in the world that Abram should choose first, Yet he recedes from from
14:00
his right. Note it is a noble conquest to be willing to yield for
14:03
peace's sake. It is the conquest of ourselves and our own pride and passion
14:09
Matthew five, Verses thirty nine and forty. It is not only the punctilios
14:13
of honor, but even interest itself, that in many cases must be sacrificed
14:18
to peace. Lot's removal to Sodom b. C. One thousand, nine
14:22
hundred and seventeen, Verses ten through thirteen. And Lot lifted up his eyes
14:28
and beheld all the plane of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere before
14:33
the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord,
14:37
like the land of Egypt. As thou comest unto Zor, then Lot chose
14:41
him all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east, and they separated
14:45
themselves, the one from the other. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan,
14:48
and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent
14:52
towards Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the lord.
14:56
Exceedingly here the choice that Lot made when he parted from Abram. Upon
15:03
this occasion, one would have expected, number one, that he should have
15:07
expressed an unwillingness to part from Abram, and that at least he should have
15:09
done it with reluctancy. Number two, that he should have been so civil
15:13
as to have remitted the choice back again to Abram. But we find not
15:18
any instance of deference or respect to his uncle in the whole management. Abram,
15:22
having offered him the choice without compliment, he accepted it and made his
15:26
election. Passion and selfishness make men rude. Now and the choice which Lot
15:31
made, we may observe numeral one, how much he had an eye to
15:35
the goodness of the land. He beheld all the plain of Jordan, the
15:39
flat country in which Sodom stood, that it was admirably well watered everywhere,
15:45
And perhaps the strife had been about water, which made him particularly fond of
15:48
that convenience. And so Lot chose all that plain Verses ten eleven. That
15:54
valley, which was like the garden of Eden itself, now yielded him a
15:58
most pleasant prospect. It was, in his eye beautiful for situation, the
16:03
joy of the whole earth. And therefore he doubted not but that it would
16:07
yield him a comfortable settlement, and that in such a fruitful soil he should
16:11
certainly thrive and grow very rich. And this was all he looked at.
16:15
But what came of it? Why the next news we hear of him is
16:18
that he is in the briars among them, he and his carried captive.
16:22
While he lived among them, he vexed his righteous soul with their conversation,
16:26
and never had a good day with them, till at last God fired the
16:30
town over his head and forced him to the mountain for safety. Who chose
16:33
the plain for wealth and pleasure? Note, Sensual choices are sinful choices,
16:38
and seldom speed well. Those who, in choosing relations, callings, dwellings,
16:44
or settlements, are guided and governed by the lusts of the flesh,
16:48
the lusts of the eye, or the pride of life, and consult not
16:51
the interests of their souls and their religion. Cannot expect God's presence with them,
16:56
nor his blessings upon them, but are commonly disappointed even in that which
17:00
they principally aimed at, and miss of that which they promised themselves satisfaction in.
17:06
In all our choices, this principle should overrule us, that that is
17:10
best for us, which is best for our souls. Numeral two. How
17:15
little he considered the wickedness of the inhabitants, But the men of Sodom were
17:19
wicked Verse thirteen, Note number one. Though all our sinners, yet some
17:25
are greater sinners than others. The men of Sodom were sinners of the first
17:29
magnitude, sinners before the Lord, that is impudent daring sinners. They were
17:33
so to a proverb. Hence we read of those that declare their sin as
17:38
Sodom, they hide it. Not Isaiah three, verse nine, number two,
17:42
that some sinners are the worse for living in a good land. So
17:47
the Sodomites were. For this was the iniquity of Sodom. Pride, fullness
17:51
of bread and abundance of idleness, and all these were supported by the great
17:55
plenty their country afforded Ezekiel sixteen, verse forty nine. Thus the prosperity of
18:00
fools destroys them. Number three, that God often gives great plenty to great
18:06
sinners. Filthy Sodomites dwell in a city in a fruitful plain, while faithful
18:11
Abram and his pious family dwell intents upon the barren mountains. Number four.
18:17
When wickedness has come to the height, ruin is not far off. Abounding
18:21
sins are sure presages of approaching judgments. Now, Lots coming to dwell among
18:26
the Sodomites may be considered Subscript one as a great mercy to them, and
18:30
a likely means of bringing them to repentance. For now they had a prophet
18:33
among them, and a preacher of righteousness, And if they had hearkened to
18:37
him, they might have been reformed and the ruin prevented. Note. God
18:42
sends preachers before he sends destroyers, for he is not willing that any should
18:47
perish. Subscript two as a great affliction to Lot, who was not only
18:52
grieved to see their wickedness. Second Peter two, verses seven and eight,
18:56
but was molested and persecuted by them because he would not do as they did.
19:00
Note it has often been the vexatious lot of good men to live among
19:03
wicked neighbors, to sojourn in messek Psalm one twenty verse five. And it
19:10
cannot but be the more grievous if as lot here they have brought it upon
19:14
themselves by an unadvised choice. God confirms his promise to Abram b See one
19:21
thousand, nine hundred and seventeen, Verses fourteen through eighteen. And the Lord
19:26
said unto Abram, after that lot was separated from him, lift up now
19:30
thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward and southward,
19:33
and eastward and westward. For all the land which thou seest to THEE will
19:38
I give it and to thy seed forever. And I will make thy seed
19:44
as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can number the
19:47
dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise,
19:51
walk through the land, in the length of it and in the breadth of
19:53
it, for I will give it unto thee. Then Abram removed his tent
19:57
and came and dwelt in the plane of memory, which is in Hebron,
20:00
and built there an altar unto the Lord. We have here an account of
20:06
a gracious visit which God paid to Abram to confirm the promise to him and
20:10
his observe Numeral one. When it was that God renewed and ratified the promise,
20:15
after that Lot was separated from him. That is number one, after
20:19
the quarrel was over, for those are best prepared for the visits of divine
20:23
grace, whose spirits are calm and sedate and not ruffled with any passion.
20:29
Number two. After Abram's humble self denying condescensions to Lot for the preserving of
20:33
peace. It was then that God came to him with this token of his
20:37
favor. Note. God will abundantly make up in spiritual peace what we lose
20:41
for the preservation of neighborly peace. When Abram had willingly offered Lot one half
20:47
of his right, God came and confirmed the whole to him. Number Three.
20:52
After he had lost the comfortable society of his kinsmen, by whose departure
20:56
his hands were weakened and his heart was saddened. Then God came to him
21:00
with these good words and comfortable words. Note communion with God may at any
21:04
time serve to make up the want of a conversation with our friends when our
21:08
relations are separated from us. Yet God is not. Number four. After
21:14
Lot had chosen that pleasant, fruitful veil and had gone to take possession of
21:17
it, lest Abram should be tempted to envy him and to repent that he
21:21
had given him the choice, God comes to him and assures him that what
21:23
he had should remain to him and his heirs forever, So that though Lot
21:29
perhaps had the better land, yet Abram had the better title. Lot had
21:33
the paradise such as it was, but Abram had the promise, And the
21:37
event soon made it appear that, however it seemed, now, Abram had
21:41
really the better part. See Job twenty two, Verse twenty. God owned
21:45
Abram after his strife with Lot, as the churches owned Paul after his strife
21:49
with Barnabas Acts fifteen, Verses thirty nine and forty numeral two. The promises
21:56
themselves with which God now comforted and enriched Abram. Two things. He assures
22:00
them of a good land and a numerous issue to enjoy it. Number one
22:06
here is the grant of a good land, a land famous above all lands,
22:10
for it was to be the Holy land and Emmanuel's land. This is
22:14
the land here spoken of. Subscript one. God here shows Abram the land
22:18
as he had promised. Chapter twelve, verse one. And afterwards he showed
22:22
it to Moses from the top of Pisga. Lot had lifted up his eyes
22:26
and beheld the plain of Jordan, verse ten, and he had gone to
22:30
enjoy what he saw. Come, says God to Abram. Now lift thou
22:33
up thy eyes and look and see thy own. Note that which God has
22:38
to show us is infinitely better and more desirable than anything that the world has
22:42
to offer our view, the prospects of an eye of faith are much more
22:45
rich and beautiful than those of an eye of sense. Those for whom the
22:49
heavenly Canaan is designed in the other world have sometimes, by faith, a
22:53
comfortable prospect of it in their present state. For we look at the things
22:57
that are not seen as real though distant. Subscript two. He secures this
23:03
land to him and his seed forever verse fifteen. To THEE will I give
23:07
it, And again verse seventeen, I will give it unto THEE. Every
23:11
repetition of the promise is a ratification of it to Thee and thy seed,
23:17
not to Lot in his seed. They were not to have their inheritance in
23:21
this land, and therefore Providence so ordered it that Lot should be separated from
23:25
Abram first, and then the grant should be confirmed to him and his seed.
23:30
Thus God often brings good out of evil and makes men's sins and follies
23:33
subservient to his own. Wise and holy counsels to Thee and thy seed to
23:40
thee to Sojournan is a stranger to thy seed, to dwell and rule in
23:44
as proprietors to thee, that is, to thy seed. The granting of
23:48
it to him and his forever intimates that it was typical of the heavenly canaan,
23:52
which is given to the spiritual seed of Abram forever Hebrews eleven, verse
23:56
fourteen, subscript three. He gives him livery and season of it, though
24:02
it was a reversion, arise, walk through the land verse seventeen. Enter
24:07
and take possession, Survey the parcels, and it will appear better than upon
24:11
a distant prospect. Note God is willing more abundantly to show to the heirs
24:17
of promise the immutability of his covenant and the inestimable worth of covenant blessings.
24:22
Go walk about Scion, Psalm forty eight, verse twelve, numeral two.
24:29
Here is the promise of a numerous issue to replenish this good land, so
24:33
that it should never be lost for want of heirs. Verse sixteen. I
24:36
will make thy seed as the dust of the earth. That is, they
24:40
shall increase incredibly, and take them all together. They shall be such a
24:44
great multitude as no man can number. They were so in Solomon's time first
24:49
Kings four verse twenty. Judah and Israel were many as the sand which is
24:53
by the sea, in multitude. This God here gives him the promise of
24:59
Note. The same God that provides the inheritance, provides the heirs. He
25:03
that has prepared the holy land, prepares the holy seed. He that gives
25:07
glory gives grace to make meat for glory. Lastly, we are told what
25:12
Abram did when God had thus confirmed the promise to him verse eighteen, number
25:17
one. He removed his tent. God bade him walk through the land.
25:22
That is, do not think of fixing in it, but expect to be
25:25
always unsettled, and walking through it to a better Canaan. In compliance with
25:29
God's will, hearin He removes his tent, confirming himself to the condition of
25:33
a pilgrim. Number two. He built there an altar in token of his
25:37
thankfulness to God for the kind visit he had paid him. Note. When
25:41
God meets us with gracious promises, he expects that we should attend him with
25:45
our humble praises. End of Chapter thirteen.
