- 0:00There are any number of ways to develop concentration.
- 0:04Concentration is also developed progressively such that the
- 0:09power to concentrate increases with practice and continued use.
- 0:14In their writings, both Fioro, Gundo and the mother describe a
- 0:19number of ways to develop the power of concentration.
- 0:23They leave it to each individual to determine what method or
- 0:27methods work best in any individual case.
- 0:31There is no one-size-fits-all form of developing
- 0:35concentration. It is also generally true that
- 0:39the same individual may find that different methods need to
- 0:42be applied under different times or circumstances.
- 0:46What is quite clear is that concentration comes with the
- 0:51development of a quiet mind. When an individual first
- 0:56attempts to achieve a quiet mind, they tend to try to exert
- 1:00force to still the thoughts. They generally find, however, in
- 1:04short order, that the method of suppression does not work.
- 1:09One can look at the methods as having both a negative aspect
- 1:13and a positive aspect when it comes to learning the art of
- 1:17concentration. The negative aspect is to
- 1:20withdraw the mind from distracting thoughts and
- 1:23occupations. This can happen quite naturally
- 1:27if one can for instance go out into nature, for instance a
- 1:31forest, and let the quiet of the forest permeate 1's being.
- 1:37Some people bring quiet to the mind by spending time by the
- 1:41ocean or outdoors at night with the vast starry sky above.
- 1:47Reduction of use of electronic devices can also aid the mind.
- 1:52On the positive side, there is the focus on a subject of
- 1:56intense interest, whether it be mathematics, art, science,
- 2:01reading or some other form of study.
- 2:05Some people use the method called Tratec, which involves
- 2:09focusing the attention on a candle flame or other intense
- 2:13light to the exclusion of all else until the awareness shifts
- 2:18into another domain. A widely utilized technique
- 2:22involves various forms of pranayama, the management of the
- 2:26breath. Some people move their awareness
- 2:29into certain areas of the being, such as between the eyebrows,
- 2:34above the head or behind the heart, and open to the forces
- 2:39and energies that are active in those ranges.
- 2:43Some people find that they need to take the quieting of the mind
- 2:46in stages, particularly when the thoughts are very active and
- 2:51overwhelming the awareness. For such individuals, the use of
- 2:56a mantra is frequently recommended.
- 2:59Focusing on the mantra and its inner meaning, or at least its
- 3:03sound body, they are able to occupy the mind and drive away
- 3:08the chaotic traffic of thoughts that otherwise prevent
- 3:12concentration. Some individuals develop the
- 3:16power of surrender and rely on the divine grace, which gives
- 3:21them peace and a quiet mind as the basis for their ability to
- 3:26concentrate. Swami Vivekananda and his Raja
- 3:31Yoga does a masterful job of describing the normal state of
- 3:36the mind, the status of achieving stillness of what he
- 3:39calls the mind stuff, and the methods of attaining
- 3:43concentration. For those who are suited to
- 3:46follow such a path, he has set forth a comprehensive
- 3:51methodology. The Tibetan Buddhist tradition
- 3:55uses, among other techniques, a method of visualization combined
- 4:00with prayer, mantra, and various postures to focus the mental
- 4:05attention. Many individuals incorporate
- 4:09some form of visualization into their practice, for instance,
- 4:13moving their awareness to a place that naturally holds quiet
- 4:17and concentrated energy with which they are familiar, or
- 4:22moving their awareness to an experience they had of an
- 4:25intensely concentrated state. There are times when
- 4:30concentration develops, and other times when the mind needs
- 4:34to let go and relax and recharge, so to speak.
- 4:38Eventually, the seeker can appreciate the wave and through
- 4:42of the concentration process. He does not begrudge the times
- 4:48of rest between periods of concentration, as in the
- 4:52development of physical culture through various forms of
- 4:55exercise, weight lifting, et cetera, which sets forth an
- 5:00optimum regimen for effort and then the relaxation of the
- 5:04muscles to achieve the best result over time, So too, the
- 5:10development of concentration has its own cycle of what may be
- 5:14termed a process of ascent and integration, the mother writes.
- 5:20Quote. There's a way of reducing the
- 5:23time necessary for doing things by increasing the concentration
- 5:27considerably. Some people can't do this for
- 5:31long. It tires them.
- 5:33But it's like weightlifting, isn't it?
- 5:36One can get accustomed to it. And then if you can succeed in
- 5:40mastering this power of concentration and in making your
- 5:44mind absolutely still, for this indeed is the first condition.
- 5:50And if in this quietude you concentrate it, concentrate,
- 5:55concentrate, concentrate on the point you want to make, on the
- 5:59work you have to do or the action you have to perform.
- 6:03Well, you can. It comes like a kind of
- 6:07extremely quiet but all powerful force of propulsion, and you go
- 6:12forward with one movement without hesitation.
- 6:16You can literally do in 1/4 of an hour what would otherwise
- 6:20take one hour. And so this has the great
- 6:23advantage that it gives you time and that after this, instead of
- 6:28going from one activity to another, from 1 agitation to
- 6:32another, you can relax completely for some minutes and
- 6:37have a total rest. This gives you time to rest and
- 6:42in this repose, naturally, as you are relaxed, all that could
- 6:47have been a little too tense is relaxed and put in order and
- 6:52this puts you back in a condition in which you are once
- 6:56again able to make another concentration.
