- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter thirty six Genesis, chapter thirty six. In this chapter
- 0:05Speaker 1: we have an account of the posterity of Esau, who
- 0:08Speaker 1: from him were called Edomites. That Esau who sold his
- 0:14Speaker 1: birthright and lost his blessing, and was not loved of
- 0:18Speaker 1: God as Jacob was. Here is a brief register kept
- 0:22Speaker 1: of his family for some generations. Number one because he
- 0:27Speaker 1: was the son of Isaac, for whose sake this honor
- 0:30Speaker 1: is put upon him. Number two because the Edomites were
- 0:34Speaker 1: neighbors to Israel, and their genealogy would be of use
- 0:39Speaker 1: to give light to the following stories of what passed
- 0:42Speaker 1: between them. Number three. It is to show the performance
- 0:47Speaker 1: of the promise to Abraham that he should be the
- 0:50Speaker 1: father of many nations, and of that answer which Rebecca
- 0:54Speaker 1: had from the oracle she consulted, two nations are in
- 0:59Speaker 1: thy womb, and of the blessing of Isaac, thy dwelling
- 1:03Speaker 1: shall be the fatness of the earth. We have here
- 1:07Speaker 1: numeral one, Esau's wives verse one through five, numeral two,
- 1:13Speaker 1: his removal to Mount Seyer verse six through eight, numeral three,
- 1:19Speaker 1: the names of his sons Verses nine through fourteen, numeral four,
- 1:25Speaker 1: the dukes who descended of his sons, Verses fifteen through
- 1:30Speaker 1: nineteen numeral five, The Dukes of the Writes Verses twenty
- 1:36Speaker 1: through thirty numeral six, The Kings and Dukes of Eden
- 1:42Speaker 1: Verses thirty one through forty three, little more as recorded
- 1:46Speaker 1: than their names, because the history of those who were
- 1:50Speaker 1: out of the Church, though perhaps it might have been
- 1:53Speaker 1: serviceable in politics, would have been of little use in divinity.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It is in the Church that the memorable instances are
- 2:01Speaker 1: found of special grace and special providence, For that is
- 2:07Speaker 1: the enclosure. The rest is common. This chapter is abridged
- 2:12Speaker 1: First Chronicles, Chapter one, verse thirty five. The Generations of
- 2:18Speaker 1: Esau DC. Seventeen eighty verse one. Now, these are the
- 2:23Speaker 1: generations of Esau, who is Edom verse two. Esau took
- 2:28Speaker 1: his wives of the daughters of Canaan Aida the daughter
- 2:32Speaker 1: of Elon the Hittite, and a hol Obama, the daughter
- 2:38Speaker 1: of Anna, the daughter of Zibeon the Hiwite verse three,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and Bashemath Ishmael's daughter sister to Nabajath verse four, and
- 2:51Speaker 1: Aida ver to Esau Eli Faz and Bashamath ver Rull
- 2:59Speaker 1: verse five. And a Holobama bear Jeyush and Jalam and Corah.
- 3:06Speaker 1: These are the sons of Esau, which were born unto
- 3:10Speaker 1: him in the land of Canaan verse six. And Esau
- 3:14Speaker 1: took his wives and his sons, and his daughters, and
- 3:18Speaker 1: all the person of his house, and his cattle, and
- 3:22Speaker 1: all his beasts, and all his substance which he had
- 3:25Speaker 1: got in the land of Canaan, and went into the
- 3:28Speaker 1: country from the face of his brother Jacob verse seven.
- 3:34Speaker 1: For their riches were more than that they might dwell together,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear
- 3:42Speaker 1: them because of their cattle. Verse eight. Thus dwelt Esau
- 3:46Speaker 1: in Mount Seyer. Esau is Edom. Observe here Number one
- 3:52Speaker 1: concerning Esa himself verse one, he is called Edom, and
- 3:58Speaker 1: again verse eight that name by which was perpetuated the
- 4:02Speaker 1: remembrance of the foolish bargain he made when he sold
- 4:06Speaker 1: his birthright for that read that red pottage. The very
- 4:12Speaker 1: mention of that name is enough to intimate the reason
- 4:16Speaker 1: why his family is turned off. With such a short account, note,
- 4:22Speaker 1: if men do a wrong thing, they must thank themselves
- 4:26Speaker 1: when it is long afterwards remembered against them to their reproach.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Number two concerning his wives and the children they bore
- 4:35Speaker 1: him in the land of Canaan. He had three wives,
- 4:39Speaker 1: and by them all but five sons. Many a one
- 4:43Speaker 1: has more by one wife. God in his providence often
- 4:48Speaker 1: disappoints those who take indirect courses to build up a family.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yet here the promise prevailed, and Esau's family was built up.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Number three concerning his removal to Mount Seer, which was
- 5:05Speaker 1: the country God had given him for a possession when
- 5:08Speaker 1: he reserved Canaan for the seed of Jacob. God owns it.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Long afterwards I gave to Esau Mount Seyer Deuteronomy chapter two,
- 5:19Speaker 1: verse five. Joshua chapter twenty four, verse four, which was
- 5:25Speaker 1: the reason why the Edomites must not be disturbed in
- 5:29Speaker 1: their possession. Those that have not a right by promise,
- 5:32Speaker 1: such as Jacob had to Canaan, may have a very
- 5:35Speaker 1: good title by providence to their estates, such as Esau
- 5:40Speaker 1: had to Mount Seer. Esau had begun to settle among
- 5:43Speaker 1: his wives relations in Seer before Jacob came from Paduram
- 5:50Speaker 1: Chapter thirty two, verse three. Isaac, it is likely, had
- 5:55Speaker 1: sent him thither, as Abraham in his lifetime had sent
- 5:59Speaker 1: the son of the Concubines. From Isaac his son into
- 6:03Speaker 1: the east country. Chapter twenty five, verse six, that Jacob
- 6:08Speaker 1: might have the clearer way made for him to the
- 6:11Speaker 1: possession of the promised land. During the life of Isaac, however,
- 6:17Speaker 1: Esau had probably still some effects remaining in Canaan. But
- 6:22Speaker 1: after his death he wholly withdrew to Mount Seyer, took
- 6:26Speaker 1: with him what came to his share of his father's
- 6:29Speaker 1: personal estate, and left Canaan to Jacob, not only because
- 6:34Speaker 1: he had the promise of it, but because Esau perceived
- 6:38Speaker 1: that if they should continue to thrive as they had begun,
- 6:42Speaker 1: there would not be room for both. Thus dwelt Esau
- 6:46Speaker 1: in Mount Seyer verse eight. Note whatever opposition may be made,
- 6:52Speaker 1: God's words will be accomplished. Even those that have opposed
- 6:56Speaker 1: it will see themselves, some time or other under a
- 7:00Speaker 1: necessity of yielding to it and acquiescing in it. Esau
- 7:05Speaker 1: had struggled for Canaan, but now he tamely retires to
- 7:09Speaker 1: Mount Seyer. For God's counsel shall certainly stand concerning the
- 7:15Speaker 1: times before appointed and the bounds of our habitation. The
- 7:20Speaker 1: dukes of Eden v. C. Seventeen twenty nine, verse nine,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and these are the generations of Esau, the father of
- 7:29Speaker 1: the Edamites in Mount Seyer verse ten. These are the
- 7:33Speaker 1: names of Esau's sons, Eliphaz, the son of Ada, the
- 7:38Speaker 1: wife of Esau, Ruel, the son of Bashamath, the wife
- 7:42Speaker 1: of Esau, verse eleven. And the sons of Eliphaz were Taman, Omar, Zepho,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and Gatam and Cannas verse twelve. And Timna was concubine
- 7:57Speaker 1: to Eliphas, Esau's son, and she Baer to Eliphaz Ambulek.
- 8:03Speaker 1: These were the sons of Ada, Esau's wife, Verse thirteen.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And these are the sons of Ruelnahath and Zerhah, Syma
- 8:14Speaker 1: and Nizah. These were the sons of Bashimath, Esau's wife,
- 8:18Speaker 1: verse fourteen. And these were the sons of Abelimaba, the
- 8:24Speaker 1: daughter of Anna, the daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife, and
- 8:28Speaker 1: she Baer to Esau, Yeyush and Jalam and Corah verse fifteen.
- 8:35Speaker 1: These were the dukes of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz,
- 8:38Speaker 1: the first son of Esau, Duke Teman, Duke Omar, Duke Zepho,
- 8:45Speaker 1: Duke Cannaz verse sixteen, Duke Corah, Duke Getam, and Duke
- 8:51Speaker 1: am Alek. These are the dukes that came of Aliphas
- 8:56Speaker 1: in the land of Edom. These were the sons of
- 8:59Speaker 1: Adah verse seventeen. And these are the sons of Ruel
- 9:03Speaker 1: Isau's son, Duke Nahoff, Duke Zarah, Duke Shamah, Duke Miza.
- 9:10Speaker 1: These are the dukes that came of Ruel in the
- 9:13Speaker 1: land of Edom. These are the sons of Bashimath Isa's
- 9:18Speaker 1: wife Verse eighteen. And these are the sons of a
- 9:22Speaker 1: hol Obama Isa's wife, Duke Yeush, Duke Jalam, Duke Korref.
- 9:28Speaker 1: These were the dukes that came of a Halabama, the
- 9:32Speaker 1: daughter of Anna Esau's wife, Verse nineteen. These are the
- 9:37Speaker 1: sons of Esa, who is Edom, and these are their dukes.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Observe here number one that only the names of Esau's
- 9:47Speaker 1: sons and grandsons are recorded, only their names, not their history.
- 9:52Speaker 1: For it is the church that Moses preserves the records of,
- 9:56Speaker 1: not the records of those that are without those the
- 10:00Speaker 1: elders that lived by faith alone obtained a good report.
- 10:04Speaker 1: It is Zion that produces the men of renown, not
- 10:08Speaker 1: Zayer Psalms, Chapter eighty seven, verse five. Nor does the
- 10:13Speaker 1: genealogy go any further than the third or fourth generation.
- 10:18Speaker 1: The very names of all after are buried in Obilivion.
- 10:22Speaker 1: It is only the pedigree of the Israelites who were
- 10:26Speaker 1: to be the heirs of Canaan, and of whom were
- 10:29Speaker 1: to come the Promised Seed and the Holy Seed, that
- 10:33Speaker 1: is drawn out to any length as far as there
- 10:36Speaker 1: was occasion for it, even of all the tribes till
- 10:40Speaker 1: Canaan was divided among them, and the royal line till
- 10:44Speaker 1: Christ came. Number two that these sons and grandsons of
- 10:49Speaker 1: Esau were called dukes verse fifteen through nineteen. Probably they
- 10:55Speaker 1: were military commanders, dukes or captains that had soldiers under them.
- 11:01Speaker 1: For Esau and his family lived by the sword Chapter
- 11:05Speaker 1: twenty seven, verse forty. Note titles of honor have been
- 11:10Speaker 1: more ancient out of the Church than in it. Esau's
- 11:14Speaker 1: sons were dukes, when Jacob's sons were but plain shepherds
- 11:19Speaker 1: Chapter forty seven, verse three. This is not a reason
- 11:23Speaker 1: why such titles should not be used among Christians, but
- 11:27Speaker 1: it is a reason why men should not overvalue themselves
- 11:31Speaker 1: or others for the sake of them. There is an
- 11:34Speaker 1: honor that comes from God, and the name in his
- 11:37Speaker 1: house is infinitely more valuable. Edomites may be dukes with men,
- 11:44Speaker 1: but Israelites indeed are made to our God, kings and priests.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Number three. We may suppose those dukes had numerous families
- 11:55Speaker 1: of children and servants that were their dukedoms. God promised
- 11:59Speaker 1: to multi replied Jacob and to enrich him. Yet Esau
- 12:03Speaker 1: increases and is enriched. First note, it is no new
- 12:08Speaker 1: thing for the men of this world to be full
- 12:11Speaker 1: of children, and to have their bellies too, filled with
- 12:15Speaker 1: hidden treasures. Psalms, Chapter seventeen, verse fourteen. God's promised to
- 12:21Speaker 1: Jacob began to work late, but the effect of it
- 12:25Speaker 1: remained longer, and it had its complete accomplishment. In the
- 12:30Speaker 1: spiritual Israel verse twenty these are the sons of Seer,
- 12:35Speaker 1: the Horite who inhabited the land Loton and Chebol and
- 12:41Speaker 1: Zibeon and Anah verse twenty one, and Deshon and Azare
- 12:47Speaker 1: and Deshon. These are the dukes of the Horiites. The
- 12:51Speaker 1: children of Seer in the land of Edom verse twenty two,
- 12:56Speaker 1: and the children of Loton were Horri and Hemon, and
- 13:00Speaker 1: Lotan's sister was Timna verse twenty three. And the children
- 13:05Speaker 1: of Shebal were these Alban and Manahath and ebal Sheppo
- 13:13Speaker 1: and Onam verse twenty four. And these are the children
- 13:18Speaker 1: of Zibeon, both Ajah and Anah. This was that Anah
- 13:24Speaker 1: that found the mules in the wilderness as he fed
- 13:27Speaker 1: the asses of Zibeon his father verse twenty five. And
- 13:32Speaker 1: the children of Annah were these Dishon and Ohalabama, the
- 13:38Speaker 1: daughter of Annah verse twenty six. And these are the
- 13:42Speaker 1: children of Deshon, Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Schehran
- 13:49Speaker 1: verse twenty seven. The children of Azir are these Bilhan
- 13:54Speaker 1: and Zadan and Akhan verse twenty eight. The children and
- 14:00Speaker 1: ab Dejon are these us and Iran verse twenty nine.
- 14:05Speaker 1: These are the dukes that came of the Horiites. Duke Loton,
- 14:10Speaker 1: Duke Chabal, Duke Zibeon, Duke Anna verse thirty. Duke Deshon
- 14:16Speaker 1: and Duke Zar, Duke de Schon. These are the dukes
- 14:20Speaker 1: that came of hori among their dukes in the land
- 14:24Speaker 1: of Seer. In the midst of this genealogy of the Edomites,
- 14:29Speaker 1: here is inserted the genealogy of the Horiites, those Canaanites
- 14:34Speaker 1: or Hittites. Compare Chapter twenty six, verse thirty four that
- 14:40Speaker 1: were the natives of Mount Seer. Mention is made of
- 14:44Speaker 1: them chapter fourteen, verse six, and their interest in Mount
- 14:49Speaker 1: Seer before the Edomites took possession of it Deuteronomy, chapter two,
- 14:56Speaker 1: Verses twelve and twenty two. This comes in not only
- 15:00Speaker 1: to give light to the story, but to be a
- 15:03Speaker 1: standing reflection upon the Edomites for intermarrying with them, by
- 15:09Speaker 1: which it is probable they learned their way and corrupted themselves. Esau,
- 15:15Speaker 1: having sold his birthright and lost his blessing and entered
- 15:19Speaker 1: into alliance with the Hittites, his posterity and the sons
- 15:23Speaker 1: of Sayer are here reckoned together. Note those that treacherously
- 15:29Speaker 1: desert God's church are justly numbered with those that were
- 15:34Speaker 1: never in it. Aposti Edomites stand on the same ground
- 15:38Speaker 1: with accursed Horiites. Particular notice is taken of one Anaw,
- 15:43Speaker 1: who fed the asses of Zibeon his father verse twenty four,
- 15:48Speaker 1: and yet is called duke Anaw verse twenty nine. Note
- 15:53Speaker 1: those that expect to rise high should begin low, and
- 15:57Speaker 1: honorable descent should not keep man from an honest employment,
- 16:02Speaker 1: nor a mean employment hinder any man's preferment. This Anah
- 16:08Speaker 1: was not only industrious in his business, but ingenious too,
- 16:12Speaker 1: and successful, for he found mules, or as some read it,
- 16:18Speaker 1: waters hot baths in the wilderness. Those that are diligent
- 16:22Speaker 1: in their business sometimes find more advantages than they expected
- 16:27Speaker 1: Verse thirty one. And these are the kings that reigned
- 16:31Speaker 1: in the land of Edom before there reigned any king
- 16:35Speaker 1: over the children of Israel verse thirty two. And Bellah,
- 16:39Speaker 1: the son of the Whore, reigned in Edom, and the
- 16:43Speaker 1: name of his city was den Haabah verse thirty three,
- 16:47Speaker 1: and Bellah died, and Jobab, the son of Zara of Basrah,
- 16:53Speaker 1: reigned in his stead verse thirty four, and Jobab died,
- 16:58Speaker 1: and Husham of the land Tamani reigned in his stead
- 17:03Speaker 1: verse thirty five, and Husham died, and Hadad, the son
- 17:08Speaker 1: of Bidad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab,
- 17:12Speaker 1: reigned in his stead, and the name of his city
- 17:15Speaker 1: was of theth Verse thirty six, and Hadad died, and
- 17:20Speaker 1: Simalah of Mazureka reigned in his stead verse thirty seven,
- 17:27Speaker 1: and Simlah died, and Solibriboath by the River reigned in
- 17:32Speaker 1: his stead verse thirty eight, and Saal died and bal
- 17:37Speaker 1: Hanan the son of Akbor, reigned in his stead Verse
- 17:42Speaker 1: thirty nine. And bal Hanan, the son of Akbor, died
- 17:46Speaker 1: and Hadar reigned in his stead, And the name of
- 17:49Speaker 1: his city was Peiu, and his wife's name was Mehetabel,
- 17:55Speaker 1: the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mejah, Verse forty
- 18:02Speaker 1: And these are the names of the dukes that came
- 18:04Speaker 1: of Esau, according to their families, after their places, by
- 18:09Speaker 1: their names. Duke Tymnah, Duke Alva, Duke Jeheth Verse forty one,
- 18:16Speaker 1: Duke ahol Obama, Duke Elha, Duke Pennon Verse forty two,
- 18:22Speaker 1: Duke Cannas, Duke Timon, Duke Mibzar Verse forty three, Duke mcdeal,
- 18:30Speaker 1: Duke a Ram. These are the dukes of edom according
- 18:33Speaker 1: to their habitations in the land of their possession. He
- 18:37Speaker 1: is Esau the father of the Edomites. By degrees, it
- 18:42Speaker 1: seems that Edomites wormed out the writes, obtained full possession
- 18:46Speaker 1: of the country, and had a government of their own
- 18:50Speaker 1: number one. They were ruled by kings who governed the
- 18:54Speaker 1: whole country, and seemed to have come to the throne
- 18:57Speaker 1: by election, not by lineal das so, Bishop Patrick observes
- 19:03Speaker 1: these kings reigned in Edom before there reigned any king
- 19:07Speaker 1: over the children of Israel, that is, before Moses's time,
- 19:12Speaker 1: for he was king in Jerusheran Deuteron me chapter thirty three,
- 19:18Speaker 1: verse five. God had lately promised Jacob that kings should
- 19:23Speaker 1: come out of his loins chapter thirty five, verse eleven.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Yet Esau's blood becomes royal long before any of Jacob's did.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Note in external prosperity and honor, the children of the
- 19:37Speaker 1: covenant are often cast behind, and those that are out
- 19:41Speaker 1: of covenant get the start. The triumphing of the wicked
- 19:45Speaker 1: may be quick, but it is short, soon ripe, and
- 19:50Speaker 1: soon rotten. But the products of the promise, though they
- 19:54Speaker 1: are slow, are sure and lasting. At the end, it
- 19:57Speaker 1: shall speak and not lie. We may suppose it was
- 20:02Speaker 1: a great trial to the fate of God's Israel to
- 20:06Speaker 1: hear of the pomp and power of the kings of
- 20:08Speaker 1: Eden while they were bond slaves in Egypt. But those
- 20:12Speaker 1: that look for great things from God must be content
- 20:15Speaker 1: to wait for them. God's time is the best time.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Number two. They were afterwards governed by dukes again here named,
- 20:26Speaker 1: who I suppose ruled at the same time in the
- 20:29Speaker 1: several places in the country. Either they set up this
- 20:33Speaker 1: form of government in conformity to the Horites who had
- 20:37Speaker 1: used it verse twenty nine, or God's providence reduced them
- 20:42Speaker 1: to it as some conjecture to correct them for their
- 20:46Speaker 1: unkindness to Israel and in refusing them passage through their
- 20:51Speaker 1: country Numbers Chapter twenty, verse nineteen. Note when power is abused,
- 20:58Speaker 1: it is just with God to weaken it by turning
- 21:01Speaker 1: it into divers channels for the transgressionable land. Many are
- 21:07Speaker 1: the princes thereof sin brought Edom from kings to dukes,
- 21:12Speaker 1: from crowns to coronets. We read of the dukes of
- 21:16Speaker 1: Edom Exodus, chapter fifteen, verse fifteen, Yet long afterwards of
- 21:23Speaker 1: their kings again three Mount Seyer is called the land
- 21:27Speaker 1: of their possession verse forty three. While the Israelites dwelt
- 21:32Speaker 1: in the house of bondage and their Canaan, was only
- 21:35Speaker 1: the land of promise that Edomites dwelt in their own habitations,
- 21:40Speaker 1: and Seyer was in their possession. Note the children of
- 21:45Speaker 1: this world have there all in hand and nothing in
- 21:49Speaker 1: hope Luke Chapter sixteen, verse twenty five. While the children
- 21:55Speaker 1: of God have there all in hope and next to
- 21:59Speaker 1: nothing in hand. But all things considered, it is better
- 22:03Speaker 1: to have Canaan in promise than Mount Seier in possession.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And of Chapter thirty six
