- 0:38Finger Discount dude. Welcome to Fourthinger Discount. This week we're here to review
- 0:58episode j aBFT zero three. It is the wife of quality Guam Dando and
- 1:03I am guying. Yes, get ready for some watery fun. As I
- 1:07occasionally said, Oh I never say that to anybody. He leves get wet.
- 1:11The first ten rowers will get it. Remember when you're a kid,
- 1:14or you know, when you're adult. Luck you and I in summer,
- 1:17when you get the slip and side out in the backyard, that's like an
- 1:19Australian the Australian essential, isn't it? For Sumer? The slip and slide,
- 1:23slip and slide. Yeah, is it a worldwide thing? Do you
- 1:25think it's not caught a slip and slide anywere but Australia don't think Well,
- 1:29just as if you refer to thongs in other parts of the world that you're
- 1:33like, why are you talking about your underpand yeah, why are you wearing
- 1:34them on your feet? A freak? Are you slip and slide? For
- 1:38those of you there underwear, let's google slip and slide and simply call overseas.
- 1:42Basically, it's just why are they charging so much money for this?
- 1:45I don't understand unless it's got the because sometimes you got built in sprinkles on
- 1:48the side. Correct, yes, that's the deluxe model. But if you
- 1:49grew up in Cryer like me, you basically just you went down to Buddings
- 1:53and you bought a long tarp and you just sprayed it with the hose and
- 1:56just wept over. I thought, because you brought a whole lot of plastic
- 1:59rubbish eggs and cut them, cut their sides down and just made yeah,
- 2:02like a nice long plastic runway. Yeah that you then wet and then you
- 2:07jumped on on your belly and slid. Notice when I said Heckla grew up
- 2:10in Kara. I noticed how I said, bought with quotation marks. Poor
- 2:16old Bunnings. Oh they're doing it tough. Hey, they've got their sausage
- 2:21thistles there five they do, indeed, charge like three fifty of sausage.
- 2:23Now I'm like, what is this ridiculousness? That is insane. I haven't
- 2:27been to a sausages a long a while, and I used to love doing
- 2:29it. Dollar snag, yes indeed. Well, yeah, I know I'd
- 2:31always give them a gold coin, but never never two, often a one.
- 2:38It's been a long time since there's been the gold coin donation. I'm
- 2:39pretty sure at the Bunnings barbecues, but I'm a driving past it, they're
- 2:43going three fifty and extra for onion. What the fuck? I know?
- 2:47That is highway robbery. It is highway robbery, it is indeed. So
- 2:53we went to the footy to see the girls play the Gelong Cats. They
- 2:54beat the Bombers last Sunday. Ali was very excited about that, and as
- 2:58was Holly. They're in the finals and all that stuff. But they have
- 3:00the sausage ligles there for the local footy clubs and things like that, and
- 3:02it was like three dollars fifty for a sausage, and I was like,
- 3:06okay, so I had three dollars fifty in my pocket. Wouldn't take my
- 3:07cash? Excuse me? Only taking card? What kind of sausage Shue doesn't
- 3:10take fucking cash. I've got gold coins in my pocket. You may have
- 3:14them. We don't want your gold coins, we want we want your card.
- 3:16Excuse me, I've got legal tender here. Yeah, and in exchange
- 3:21for a sausage. I'm like, I get it at the food stalls because
- 3:23you know, there's long lines that's got to get people in and out right
- 3:27whatever, what of it? But this is a sausage sizzle. What is
- 3:30happening here? Sausage sizzles were invented to separate you from your cash. No,
- 3:35she said to me, you can put it in the tip jar.
- 3:37I'm like, I'll put it in the tip jar and then you'll give you
- 3:38the sausage. No, no, no, you're got to pay for the
- 3:39sausage. But that's for tips. I'm like, wait a minute, look
- 3:43the fuck is going on here? This tippic culture has become insane. Having
- 3:46said that, please be consider becoming a patron. No tippic culture is nuts.
- 3:55I was like, I had to pause for a second. I was
- 3:59like, what's going on here? My being rauted? Which is like you
- 4:00put in the tip. I was like, good idea, good idea,
- 4:02I'll put it in here, and then you give me the sausage. I
- 4:04no, no, no Ah, that's extra. What the hell? Man?
- 4:11Yeah, I've never experienced sausages that wouldn't accept my gold coins. No,
- 4:14you're not about to get a tip for this service. Now, let
- 4:15me forget about it at all. Was it a fan? But I'm assuming
- 4:19you're a fan of going to Barle's. That's where are going right now?
- 4:23So guy will not be on next week's episode of four finger Discount and be
- 4:25Ali, Ja and Neil for since the index. But let's talk about your
- 4:28trips are going over there? You want to talk about way going over now?
- 4:30Just there are multiples, namely two teeth in my mouth that are not
- 4:34functioning well at the moment. I mentioned this on other episodes of four Figure
- 4:40Discount or one of the many shows that we do on the Full Fingered Discount
- 4:44network, But I clearly the little bit of teeth grinding during COVID or maybe
- 4:49just life yeah, but we have one of the teeth on my bottom jaw
- 4:55has just decided to snap. So yeah, I've got a broken tooth which
- 5:00is and a little tingly nervous, doting to get exposed a little bit.
- 5:03And every time I take a drink water, oh just about put anything.
- 5:09Okay, I found sometimes when I got teethache or tooth tooth. Toothache,
- 5:14isn't it. Yeah, toothache when it's like a cold drink, it's the
- 5:17worst because it's like lingers on your tooth for a while. You become like
- 5:20that person on the on the Sense of iron Ad, you know, the
- 5:24for sensitive teeth. But you're gonna have to start investing in yeah, yeah,
- 5:28sort of all they do that very gentle oh yeah, although you're probably
- 5:31like, ah so fuck so, yes there's that one that needs to get
- 5:38seen too, sooner rather than later. And then yes, got a well
- 5:42something with another tooth that's starting to get a little bit exposed as well,
- 5:45because look, there's a lot of great DNA in the Davis strand, but
- 5:51teeth is not one of them. I think we're sort of a now for
- 5:54having crap teeth. Okay, So and plus you know, I'm lazy.
- 5:57I don't take care of my brushing habits were terrible when I was younger.
- 6:00It wasn't until I really met Nichola that I became like proper two minutes each
- 6:03time, twice a day kind of brushing. When I was like a teenager,
- 6:06it was a kill. My mom would be like, brush your teeth,
- 6:10and she's like, brush your teeth. Yeah, yeah, she'd never
- 6:11double check, like I never did. What is it like? Margaret Mary's
- 6:15very big on it. She was always very big on clean your teeth.
- 6:17Yeah, and so is Nicola. This is the thing I says to Nicola
- 6:19that I'm like, you know, you're, you know, so prudent with
- 6:23your teeth, like brush them two three minutes every time, two sometimes three
- 6:26times a day. Yeah. Who's got the feelings? And who hasn't?
- 6:29Nikola has and I haven't. She's straight out of the Big Book of British
- 6:31smart. I the Lovely Wis has got teeth that are just immaculate. Nicholas.
- 6:36Her teeth look great, yeah, yeah, whereas mine kind of you
- 6:41know, I've got a history of red wine, black coffee and cigarettes and
- 6:45you know, grinding due to various anxieties and just general sort of what's neglect.
- 6:50Yeah, I was feeling my teeth the other day and they're so all
- 6:55over the place. Now I'm like, what the fuck they're so out of
- 6:59line. I'm like, do I need to get braces or something. I
- 7:01don't know if he wants me saying this, but I don't think he listened.
- 7:03So he went. But los brother's got the invisil line thing happening now.
- 7:06I love the invisible braces. Yeah. Expensive, right, I don't
- 7:11think they come cheap. Yeah he was. I'm like, I didn't even
- 7:14know they really are in VISI line. Good for you? Yeah, I
- 7:16know I might need it because my teeth lock all over the shop. Yeah.
- 7:19I mean I had braces when I was when I was younger and took
- 7:23them up and like, oh wow, teeth, that's great. And then
- 7:26I don't know if I again neglected the whole. Now you've got to where
- 7:30your what's that thing that you get after you have your braces? It's like
- 7:32that, I know, I know what you mean. Yeah, the plate
- 7:34or yeah, yeah, and various things that are sort of gonna okay,
- 7:38we straighten them up. This will help keep them straight. Now, don't
- 7:41forget to do this. Oh no, no, of course I'll do that.
- 7:44I really did that, and yeah, as a result, everything sort
- 7:46of started to the tectonic plates have started to shift once again. So the
- 7:51upshot of this is d industry is expensive. Getting your teeth scene too,
- 7:56is not a cheap thing. I was looking around local interests and yeah,
- 8:01because well, he's the thing. The last time we went to Bali.
- 8:03Before we went, I'd broken the exact same tooth on the other side,
- 8:07and you know, got a quote and they said, oh no, that's
- 8:11going that's going to need a crown that's about two thousand bucks. I'm like,
- 8:15yeah, well, and I said that because I had a thing in
- 8:20my mouth. But luckily, you know, we booked this holiday to Bali
- 8:26and I think lou mentions like maybe looking to go to the dentist over there.
- 8:30Apparently they're pretty inexpensive, and I'm like, I don't think I'm going
- 8:33to, you know, a dentist in Bali. God knows what they might
- 8:37do to me and where they might do it. I had that feel it
- 8:39was a complete snob. I've got a friend who this is like three weeks
- 8:43ago, just go back from Barty to get a breast my breast in plants
- 8:45done. I was like, and like, my friend it was his wife,
- 8:48Sorry, not my friends. He's like, my wife just got back
- 8:50from Barli getting her breast her boobs done. And I was like, okay,
- 8:54keep that a secret. I'm like, did you go with it?
- 8:56No? No, no, I'm like, you got to go to Ballei
- 8:58by herself. Get I'm like, I just wouldn't trust it at all.
- 9:01I'm sorry, nothing against Bali, but like another country, foreign language.
- 9:05You've heard all the horror stories I did. I did a bunch of research,
- 9:09well by which I mean I did a quick google and it's like,
- 9:11oh, apparently you know a lot of dentists are training in Australia and then
- 9:16they returned to Bali and set up shop there, and cheapest strains like me
- 9:20will go over and it's like, oh, you'll do what was going to
- 9:22cost me two thousand dollars in Australia, you'll do it for five hundred dollars.
- 9:26Yere Okay, fine, So this time a third appointment comes with a
- 9:30free bing Tang shirt. That's what that's what the anesthetic is. There's anesthetics
- 9:37bing Tang. But the last time I went I was like, Okay,
- 9:41let's get this done. And ye know, the service was fantastic. I
- 9:45can't fault the work at all. It's been. It's been marvelous. They
- 9:48were very very effective, very sensitive, all that kind of stuff. So
- 9:52this time when I'm like, ah, look this has given me grief and
- 9:54I don't really want to, you know, have to put up with this
- 9:58a over the whole day season or whatever. Looked at the schedule coming up
- 10:01into you know, for the rest of the year, fastiff season, and
- 10:05you want teeth to be feeling fine, that is correct. Yes, I
- 10:09don't want to be sort of no, well, you know, I'll take
- 10:11a bite of a turkey leg and then just be crunch the numbers like I
- 10:16can. I can fly over and back, have this period of accommodation and
- 10:22get teeth done for pretty much the same amount as just getting it done here.
- 10:26Now, some of them will rational among you may be going, I
- 10:30want to just get it done here, that's what you said. I was
- 10:33like, so why didn't you just get it done? I was like,
- 10:37I might get a few other things done while I'm there, my breast,
- 10:41But it actually worked out like maybe one hundred dollars less and it's like,
- 10:46oh, well, I'll do some other things over there, Like well,
- 10:50I mean I'll be able to work remotely, so it's not like I'm actually
- 10:54just taking it full holiday. Plus it's a little bit of a writing retreat.
- 10:56I've got some projects I want to work on, and being away from
- 11:00the every day I don't know, you usually get in a different mindset or
- 11:03a better mindset to yeah, you know, I want to do this,
- 11:07this, this, and this, and you know I'm gonna be there by
- 11:09myself. Lou's got stuff on. So it was to be like, Okay,
- 11:13there's an opportunity to sort of like have a little time around the pool,
- 11:16come back and do some writing, a little more time by the hooked
- 11:18on monkey phonics. Yeah, good, talked on monkey phone, get bitten
- 11:22by one of the monkey So yeah, but I'll be over for about a
- 11:26week. Yhich, I'm going to miss a couple of episodes, but you're
- 11:31going to be in all this show. Just one one episode of this just
- 11:31one episode of the show. Yes, but you'll be in the capable hands
- 11:35listeners of Elliott J. O'Neill. Yes, so just this episode and one
- 11:39episode of the South Park podcast gone down to South Park, so listen to
- 11:41that. That'll be Elliot j for one episode as well. I think guy
- 11:43will be back. But speaking of going to places, mister Davis, Simpsons
- 11:46go to Bartaicle Bay in this episode they do and do we finally got to
- 11:50talking about the the AQDIC. This was an interesting story in the sense that
- 11:54essentially like a Simpson's go to episode. It kind of had the without the
- 11:58coming of your Bag story and the gags. It was essentially like a Summer
- 12:01of four foot two episode where it's like the family going to holiday somewhere,
- 12:05but it's not a hey, let's go to the country another country and take
- 12:09the piece out of all the stereotypes. It's just the Simpsons go on vacation.
- 12:11They do, and at least it wasn't a Homer ruins the marriage the
- 12:16holiday. He does by accident, but it's not like he deliberately is an
- 12:22idiot and fox things up. You know what I mean to say. This
- 12:24is the first time that Homer has messed up and I actually had legitimate sympathy
- 12:26for him. It's like, no, he was doing You guys are solid
- 12:30and you know this was just to kick us job too. He was doing
- 12:33really well. I mean, that could be his new gig, firework coordinator.
- 12:35I mean, I've never really considered that as a I never considered it
- 12:39a job in all, honestly, but I'm guessing there must be some sort
- 12:41of you know, talent to it. It's like, yeah, yeah,
- 12:45you gotta do it this way, and then it builds up to this,
- 12:48wait for the for the crowds, or yeah yeah, so yeah, but
- 12:52for the you know, what happens to happens like that's a homeless faults.
- 12:56Don't string him up like a like a prize shark. I mean I was
- 12:58kind of like I kind of had the same mentality. You know, you
- 13:01didn't. But with ice cream, with Margie, with the black hair,
- 13:05where he crashed into the things, I'm like, at least he wasn't being
- 13:07a dickhead. He was trying. No, no, I agree, I
- 13:09agree with you on that point. So yeah, it certainly wasn't his fault.
- 13:13But this time around utterly faultless, and at least Marge didn't like to
- 13:18say, you ruined the carousel from when I was a kid. That's what
- 13:20I was seeing. It's like, you know, it was already a disgrace.
- 13:24He fixed it. He fixed it, but he made it. Yes,
- 13:28he put the things in motion. Correct, He delegated very very well.
- 13:31Yeah, and gave Marge a lovely, you know, not memory but
- 13:35re memory. Yeah, I guess, or you know, allowed her to
- 13:39relive a childhood memory in a very nice fashion. And yeah, after that,
- 13:43then it's over. But well, the whole story is basically Homer trying
- 13:46to help Margor relive a loving childhood memory. Correct. And it's like,
- 13:52and she says one moment in this episode where she's like, oh, you
- 13:54made an effort, and I was like, I love and hate that line.
- 13:56It's like, it's nice and he's done it, but I hate that
- 13:58you as a sh I acknowledge that it's such a surprise that he's making an
- 14:01effort. Exactly right, Yeah, I mean considering that for a very long
- 14:07time, Home was a goof and a fucker. But you know, one
- 14:11thing he always got right is that, you know, he was a good
- 14:15husband. Yeah, and even when he was a bad husband, he was
- 14:18kind of like, oh, should I've realized I'm a bad husband, And
- 14:20you know, I've got to make amends to this and make it. It's
- 14:22not to be that way in the future, whereas you know, over the
- 14:26last few seasons, it seems to me at least that it's like, uh,
- 14:30okay, you're just steering into he's a goofball husband who's fucking up and
- 14:35doesn't really care like any other sitcom, Like any other sitcom exactly right.
- 14:39What distinguished the Simpsons from so many other things like that it was like,
- 14:43oh no, there's a call that you know, this character while the fuck
- 14:46up is pretty good at this and it didn't try and hit you on the
- 14:50head with the full house mentality of it. You know, let's have a
- 14:54nice positive message. It was like, you just knew they loved each other
- 14:56very much. So now it's obvious that would try to push a message here
- 15:01an agenda. By the end of this episode, so Lisa's enforcing her beliefs
- 15:05some to the townspeople about catching the young young fish and ruining the oceans and
- 15:09overfishing to the point where essentially they have to ruin another thing to save another.
- 15:16What do you see is the overall message you're trying to say here?
- 15:20It's a tough one, isn't it, Because it's like, don't be an
- 15:22activist never works it never works. Yeah. Is it like an anti activists
- 15:28or is it like, no, be an activist but also be aware that
- 15:31you can't save everything. I think that's more. That's closer to it.
- 15:33Absolutely, It's like be aware that you know there's gonna be some collateral damage
- 15:37whenever you sort of want to kickstart an economy or yeah, make sure that
- 15:43people move livelihoods. Yeah. Yeah, so I don't know. I think
- 15:46they not drop the ball. But I was thinking about that that final bit
- 15:50where it's like it just felt out of place. Yeah, because I was
- 15:54actually quite enjoying the episode, and I just had that the perfect storm parody
- 15:56and stuff, and I was just like, ah, so now you trying
- 16:00to what we're supposed to be learning something. Yeah, when they start chopping
- 16:06down all the trees, I initially and again, sorry this is the bline
- 16:10I'm saying with increasing frequency, but you know, I don't review what we've
- 16:12what you should have? Yeah, we've got. But I thought it would
- 16:15have been good if like they chopped down all the trees to rebuild the pier.
- 16:18Yeah, okay, and it's kind of like it have the carousel being
- 16:22rebuilt, new horses being carved out of the wood. Yeah. Yeah,
- 16:25actually it's a good ends and it's like a bittersweet ending because list you can
- 16:27see Marge happy on the carousel once again. Yeah, and it's sort of
- 16:30it's the truth. The name of the place, I want to say Botany,
- 16:33But so you'd have the pan out, could be Marge on the carousel
- 16:37at least looking at it, going oh it's great. And then the background
- 16:40to see the trees being chopped down. Yeah, it's a bit of a
- 16:41reboot for as well for their economy and all that. But you know,
- 16:47and oh, this talent was dead has now been brought back to life.
- 16:49But you gotta kill something way better ending, get in touch your pals down
- 16:56to one guy I read, But how about speaking of the things we say
- 16:59every week? Now? All right, well now that I'm going to take
- 17:04this week off, I'll come, I'll listen to a bunch of our podcasts
- 17:07and go, okay, stop saying that, that, that, that and
- 17:11that. Now do we ever get the I was Billy? Okay? They
- 17:15Billy the Fisherman. Is he the skipper because Maurice Marsh voiced Billy. Was
- 17:18he the other one not the faust? Whatever it was? Was he the
- 17:22other one, yeah, because I think the only name checked. Two other
- 17:26because the actual skipper. Do we get his names? I don't think we
- 17:27did. I'm like, is he a guest star and apparently he's not.
- 17:30But then I don't think Billy said all that much. Now, i'd have
- 17:34Maurice ens to say that one or two lines. But also, I mean
- 17:37Guesta sab Shimono, who, Yeah, he's it's a name I recognized.
- 17:42I think he's been a bunch of stuff. But I think he probably only
- 17:47said one line as the as one of the Japanese sailors at the end,
- 17:49wouldn't he. Yeah, it's like, oh, there's all these different fish,
- 17:52a lot of garbage fish today. It's only like that. Yeah,
- 17:56I mean a lot of waste. This guy is sort of like a veteran
- 17:59character actor. And get him into say one line and then give him guest
- 18:03voice credit. It's going on there. Yeah, so so Billy is the
- 18:07first mate, he's the blonde guy. Yeah, so he barely says anything.
- 18:10How odd have Maurice Fausto has more lines. I feel like Maurice was
- 18:14just visiting his palace at the studio one day. I want to voice this
- 18:15guy for us. Dan's got a sore throw. Hak's been canceled. Hag
- 18:25doesn't want to do anybody white. He's foto, He's too white. That's
- 18:33no challenge. My favorite. What were your favorite moments in the episode?
- 18:40Hmm? What did I enjoy? They made use of a piece of music
- 18:45that I like a lot. I got the music as well. Yeah,
- 18:48Aquarium, Yes, from and I was giggling this. Let me bring it
- 18:52back up. It is well. It is part of a humorous musical suite
- 18:56of fourteen movements by French composer Camille, saying, so, I hope I
- 19:00am pronouncing that correctly. I just put like to put a little French mustard
- 19:03on that one. Yes, but it's part of the carnival the animals.
- 19:07But yeah, the piece is called the Aquarium. I've heard it a bunch
- 19:10of times in different yeah, different movies and TV shows. But it's like,
- 19:14oh yeah, this is a really enchanting piece of music and one that
- 19:18sort of does it's good shorthand for memory, you know how it's what is
- 19:22it? Wayne's World was like flashback Sibity finale. Yes, this is kind
- 19:26of the classy version of that. It's like, let's have a memory.
- 19:30Oh dud, dude, Yeah, I'm sorry. I was really pleased they
- 19:33use that music. I like that a lot, especially because in the Simpsons
- 19:37lot with Alf's music, it's it's a lot of it's different, but it
- 19:41all sort of feels like simpsony. When it's not Simpsons music, it stands
- 19:44out absolutely. Yeah, it makes the episode feels special. A gag that
- 19:49I thought was pretty funny. It was when Patty and some were showing the
- 19:52home movies and I just gotta laugh at the crab or the lobster thrown onto
- 19:57someone's face. I don't know why I thought that was I mean, but
- 20:00yeah, anytime someone gets like a marine animal stuck on their face, I
- 20:06tend to get a laugh out of it, like an octopus or something.
- 20:07I Professor Frenklin octopus. I was when Bart does the testing and the octopus
- 20:11and the glass explodes jumps on. I like that. Had Job, Job
- 20:15and Ling were there. Oh that's right, Yeah, that's true. Yeah,
- 20:18I mean everybody came along to the to the outdoor theater. Have you
- 20:22ever been to like an autol cinema like that, like a driving you mean
- 20:26down, I've been to a sit down one It was in Danilong and it
- 20:30was just like a pub kind of place. At the back, we've just
- 20:33set up a screen. I was like, cool. There were bean bags
- 20:37and some popcorn. And I went to a county fair when Lu and I
- 20:40were in California last time, and it was this year. Sorry, this
- 20:45year this yeah, yeah, last time. I don't know whether you meant
- 20:47the time four. Yeah, because you've been twice, haven't you. No,
- 20:49no, no, we've only been away a few times, and you've
- 20:52never been in lowist states. Not in the states. Okay, yeah,
- 20:56you take somebody holidays an confused, that's correct, just a man who likes
- 21:02to get away. But we went to a county fair and I was yeah,
- 21:04this is the opening scene of this gave me a lot of flashbacks,
- 21:07like there's a spot, funniest spot. Yeah, I need a patch's big
- 21:11enough for our for our chairs, our blanket. You know, we don't
- 21:15want to be in front of someone who's going to block our view, but
- 21:17we don't want to block anyone's view behind it. Like when you go to
- 21:19a Day of the Green. Oh yeah, absolutely, yeah, we go.
- 21:22You going to that? Have you been win BB before? I'm not
- 21:25going what's the next one, what's to go to the Chemical Brothers? Oh,
- 21:27it's right, is that down the Green I thought it was just a
- 21:30gig. Okay, yeah, I think it's going to go right off.
- 21:33I'm kind of looking forward to. But yeah, so I've got a bit
- 21:37of a kick out of the just lobbying for the best spot at some public
- 21:41event like that, because yeah, it's can be real, pretty difficult,
- 21:45one of those hard things. I'm thinking about the Chemical Brothers rights, Like,
- 21:48when you've established this reputation of like you're going to go to the kids,
- 21:52it's going to go off, It's like, oh, I'm old.
- 21:55I don't want to having that reputation of having to deliver a gig that's going
- 21:57to go off every time must be exhausting. True. True. I mean
- 22:02I went to a concert the other night at the Bow Club down here in
- 22:04Gelong. Ye. Who was it again? It was the models Models,
- 22:07Yeah, big in the eighties and as you can tell by the crowd that
- 22:11was there, because it was very I would say generation X heavy with a
- 22:15dash of boomer Did he come out and go you guys got it's a number
- 22:19one? That's funny. I mean they right now they've got to that's a
- 22:26super park reference by the way, for Go down South. Yes, tune
- 22:29into Oh what was the review the monkey Phone? I already teased it once
- 22:33in this podcast. That is correct, don end of that one? What
- 22:41was I saying? But they had two big hits in the in the mid
- 22:45to late eighties, and they played one of them during their main set,
- 22:48and then it was like, all right, that's a good night, and
- 22:51of course we've got to go more. Who no mask? Imagine no one
- 22:53did? Did do you then go back out on stage? Or do you
- 22:56just call it? And I know, yeah, but I think they must
- 23:00have planned it because they played didn't play their biggest hit, and it's like,
- 23:04okay, well we're getting it. It's almost an unsigned contract between the
- 23:07audience and the band. It's like, all right, we'll get you come.
- 23:10I hate the encore. I don't get it. Is it a chance
- 23:14with the band to go off and get a drink and have a breather.
- 23:15Well, these guys didn't. I mean this, It was like they were
- 23:18offstage from maybe thirty second. What's the point, Well, what is the
- 23:21point? I don't get it. Yeah, Like I said, it's an
- 23:22unspoken contract. In a bit of an ego boost for the For the guys,
- 23:26it's like, all right, give us more, we want more,
- 23:29Come on, give it to its. We love you so much. It's
- 23:33embarrassing. I'm not a huge fan of on cares. But then I think
- 23:37I've told you that. My good friend Mark and I went to see Prince
- 23:40back in twenty eleven and we were there for one encore, which I mean
- 23:45it was rad. It was really really good, and I was like,
- 23:47all right, now we're gonna split. And next day he saw the playlists.
- 23:49It's like he played two more ONNG cares and he played When Doves Cried
- 23:52during one of the old cares. It's my favorite Prince song. And now
- 23:55Prince is dead. Well you left before when Doves Cry. You thought he's
- 23:59gonna do a gig and not play that song, you madman. Prince has
- 24:03got a rather large and varying body of work. It's when Doves Cry,
- 24:07I know, And I'm like, oh, he played a whole bunch of
- 24:11other bangers. I didn't get when Doves Cry. That's fine. We'll always
- 24:15have Purple Rain. I can go home and listen to it there. It's
- 24:18like going to fucking guns and Nose and going. No, they didn't play
- 24:21Sweet Child of Mind, No Member Rain or Welcome to the Walking to the
- 24:22Jungle. That's okay, they'll play it next time. We got a whole
- 24:26lot of Chinese democracy, and they did do Paradise sittings, So okay.
- 24:33Yeah, I enjoyed the music. I also enjoyed what else of my favorite
- 24:37moments nothing? Did you enjoy the appearance by side show mel or did you
- 24:41enjoy the time that they spoke loudly in the whisper? Or did you like
- 24:45the gay gag? So the meaning when he was like saying march at the
- 24:49window, is that what you say with the loud whisper? I forgot't exactly
- 24:53when it happened because I'm watching this and I'm like, this isn't sort of
- 24:57like the same thing where he was just like he's like much come out and
- 25:00see No, not that one. There was another bit where but he was
- 25:03doing that whisper. Was he it was the mister Thompson? Yes, yeah,
- 25:08I this is actually another point whened touch on before we get into a
- 25:11trivia right, So it seemed it reminded me when of the sort of thing
- 25:15in jubjub. So it's clear that I believe it was Kevin Current who wrote
- 25:19this. Yere Kevin Current. He had obviously he's up to date with like
- 25:22things that have happened previously in recent scenes of The Simpsons, right, so
- 25:26he had the Van Houghten's together as a unit. There has been no callback
- 25:32to that episode when she found the bra, but she found much as bra.
- 25:37That's right, yes, And it's like are they together? Are they
- 25:40not together? And it's just been no acknowledging of that since, Yeah,
- 25:44you can't sort of have one bit of continuity and then disregard another. You're
- 25:47either all in on the cannon or you're not. Milhouse Divided is an iconic
- 25:51episode where they got divorced and then they got back together, but then they
- 25:53all like split up again because you can't like it's either I don't know,
- 25:59just I know Kot knew it. He's not a big deal. But it's
- 26:02just like kind of of Nelson's dad. I'm like, wait, is he
- 26:04in the picture? Is he not in the picture? Yeah, that's the
- 26:07thing. I mean, Yeah, if you're going to, yeah, reintroduce
- 26:11certain characters that, yeah, I have only been seeing briefly, but it's
- 26:15like, oh no, well that was a pivotal part of a certain ever
- 26:17changes when it's changing the life of a main character, and you can't just
- 26:22not include, you can't just throw it away. I was just I was
- 26:25just confused. I was like, wait a minute, So they are together,
- 26:26because we've been asking are they together or not ever since? Yeah,
- 26:30apparently they are. Apparently so according to the wife aquatic. Anyway, next
- 26:34question, you there eating the beast, right? Mister Davis hit his time
- 26:37for trivia, which means it has also times the names of who we now
- 26:41referred to at fourthingk a discount as our stonecutters. So we've got Katie G
- 26:45with her one hundred dollars support, as well as Andrew's over his fifty dollars
- 26:48support. Absolute Legends, Jordan Molman, Richie Christopher Darby, Jonathan Rossi,
- 26:52Zap Pruitt, Tim through Bells and George mcmaemee, Stephen Roberts, Sean deVie,
- 26:56Pete Anderson, Andrew Davis, Ryan Dunlap, Jared Howard, Kevin's Denzil
- 27:00Planned Flood, Joe Yolan, Daniel Kott, Nick Shannon Hope, O Reese
- 27:03Roberts, Bellow, Window Bank, Mark Boston Burgess, Jack McFadden, Heath.
- 27:06That will be Adri McLeod, Lewis Kavanaugh, mart Reli, Even Ginger
- 27:08and Pickle, Preston, Murray, tari Alara, Jake Massado, Declan Phoenix,
- 27:12and Brian McCoy. Remember, if you are a stonecutter of ours a
- 27:15fourth Finger Discount, you will be assigned a number, and that number is
- 27:19yours forever. So even if you jump off, which I don't know why
- 27:22you would, but if you jump off, you still will be that number
- 27:25on the Fourth Finger Discount Stonecutter's list. So get in early so you can
- 27:27get a lower number and be officially part of the Fourth Finger Discount Stonecutters.
- 27:33All right, miss Davis, let's get into our trivia. I wrote down
- 27:34a few things and thinking, oh, this is going to be like a
- 27:38brief sort of not even visual gay but just like a visual point. Yeah,
- 27:42And then it turned out to be something a bit later on, because
- 27:45I was like, my initial question was, oh, what is Marge riding
- 27:48on the carousel, and oh my god, you're nothing doing nothing but talking
- 27:51about the Seahawks. So but I do have one or two that might stump
- 27:56it, including what is the name of the silent movie that they watch?
- 28:00Ah, no, what is it? It's farmyard Follies. I call it
- 28:04a waste of my time. This is just going and going and going and
- 28:11Nope, there's no payoff. Not really. No, I mean you're trying
- 28:14to sort of pepper in some stuff about wow, this is boring and yeah,
- 28:17let's throw radish. Yeah I told you that two minutes ago. I
- 28:21just went for so long and I was like, I don't what is this?
- 28:25Yeah, I mean I think we all acknowledged, you know, the
- 28:27part of silent movies in cinematic history, and also realize that, you know,
- 28:30no one wants to watch them these days. Yeah. But yeah,
- 28:33for you to devote this much time to it, you're really stretching out.
- 28:37You're inciting incident here. Yeah. I would preferred to like the flann has
- 28:40made their own silent film or something. Well. Yeah, but then while
- 28:42the townspeople are why were they all there? Did they not know what was
- 28:47going to be aired? It's like, hey, come watch a movie outside,
- 28:48brought to you by Flanders. We won't tell you what it is,
- 28:51though, pay you money and come watch it. That's a good point.
- 28:53I mean, yeah, again, just throw in a line like, hey,
- 28:56we were going to show you whatever. I mean. I think it
- 29:00was the Alamo Draft House. The Chaine of Cinemas in the US would occasionally
- 29:03have like not gimmicky screenings, but I think they did one where they set
- 29:08up one of those big screens on like a floaty thing in the middle of
- 29:11a lake and you could go out in like tubes and watch it. And
- 29:14they put on Jaws. I've seen it. How fucking cool is a That's
- 29:17like, it's a pretty good idea. Yeah, that's not bad at all.
- 29:18Imagine it's like at night time. Oh, of course that would be,
- 29:22and you're like, I'm gotta see what happens in the movie, but
- 29:25oh, I really want to go back to dry Land. I don't know.
- 29:29So to have it be like an event and then it's like, well,
- 29:33due to technical sequences, is we're going to be showing you three D
- 29:37We're going to be showing you this. Okay, well we're here now.
- 29:41And you know, also make something of the fact that you know, everyone's
- 29:44lobby to get these really good positions, like but then we oh, I've
- 29:48got a great position for a shit movie. Yeah, that's true. Yeah,
- 29:52it also is a good chance. I feel like it's been a long
- 29:53time since I had a good Simpsons like riot with the right music. Would
- 29:59you be few if he went to like a like a drive in or whatever
- 30:02and it was meant to be Jaws and they played deep bluec instead. Well,
- 30:06no, because deeply see kind of rips. Oh yeah, deeply say
- 30:10it's not bad. I've never watched it, really, I've always just been
- 30:12told now I don't watch it. It's not as good as Jaws. Well,
- 30:15a few things are as good. It's like, don't don't eat that
- 30:22quarter pan. It's not as good as sex. It's like I understand it
- 30:25is. Don't wink. It's not as good as sex, is it?
- 30:33Is it? Not? Yeah? You wake it? Sex is not as
- 30:37good as the real thing. But no, I don't think it'd be disappointed.
- 30:42But at the same time, like, uh is not the one that
- 30:47has like the there's a shot and always terrified me as a kid. I
- 30:51used to see in the trailers. It was this movie of like them in
- 30:53like a shipwreck or something, and it's like there's a shark coming towards them,
- 30:56like a fin coming towards really close in the water. Yeah, that's
- 30:59that one. Okay, are pretty good. I just remember that scene that
- 31:02looks see it I madin. I was like, that would be scary deeply.
- 31:04He's definitely worth checking out. Okay, is it? I just got
- 31:07shit? CGI. I don't think it's actually that bad. Okay, yeah,
- 31:11I mean I rewatched it recently. I'm like equalm in the mood for
- 31:15nothing about the story or anything. So I'm literally going out fresh, oh
- 31:18good, going completely blind. Okay. You can maybe turn off before the
- 31:21end credits because Llo cool Jay's in it and he does a rap over the
- 31:25end credits. That's not great. Okay, Well, some people tend to
- 31:30think it's pretty good. I myself do not. Listeners of the podcast you
- 31:34may feel differently about l A Cool Jay's rap over the close of Deep Blue
- 31:37se let us know what you think. So you're reviewing it back in the
- 31:41day, you're like four and a half stars and credits. I'll make that
- 31:45three and a half stars. LLL, I'm cool. All right. My
- 31:52first question for you is what is the name of the Japanese fishing boat?
- 31:56Well, I was in Japanese and I don't know Joe. Yeah, so
- 31:59it says ruka koshi kiroshi mahru, which means dolphin killer. Okay, well,
- 32:07not bad. When the Japanese showed up and there was fishing involved,
- 32:09and I'm like, you're gonna take a swipe at these guys, aren't you.
- 32:12Yeah, when you are doing a fireworks displaying, what builds suspense?
- 32:21Green something? Yes, the greenen spiral. Oh, your very is so
- 32:25close screen? What is it? Spinner? Spinner? Okay, And I've
- 32:30gonna got more question here and we'll get into the review. Mine is what
- 32:32is the name of the animal that march you to ride on the carousel?
- 32:37Mister funny? Good feeling? Any good feeling? Correct? Hit me one
- 32:42more and we'll get into this again. We're going to play a bit of
- 32:45jeopardy here, because yes, I've written any answer, but do not know
- 32:47the question. So your answer in the form of a question, please.
- 32:52Nineteen seventy two Young Young Fish Fry nineteen seventy two Young Young Fish Fry.
- 32:57While I'm assuming when did large last go to Barnacle Bay, I'm guessing that,
- 33:02Oh yeah, I mean, I'm I'm thinking there must have been a
- 33:05picture or something like that. Simpsons, So Young Young fish as in fry
- 33:09like fry something. Yes, fish fry or isn't the main character from Futurama,
- 33:14as you might hear on Tales of Futurama, brought to you by your
- 33:16friends at the Forefinger Discant Network exclusively. I'm Patreon, correct, young,
- 33:22I can't find anything. No, let us know, listener, Simpsons mailbag
- 33:24at gmail dot com. We'd love to hear from you. Yes, we'd
- 33:28love them to help us solve our own tribute questions. We'd love you to
- 33:30tell guy to lift his game. All right. So the original air date
- 33:36of The Wife of Corny, the first episode to air in two thousand and
- 33:38seven, are interesting. Note this was the highest rated episode since season sixteenth
- 33:44episode Homer and Ned's Hail Mary Pass, which aired right after the Super Bowl.
- 33:47So I had a bit of a crutch there, right. Barring that
- 33:50one, the ratings were never this high, although last is high in two
- 33:54thousand and four with Annoyed grunt Butt where Homer builds the robot to the robot,
- 33:58which is a good episode. Right, So it's been that long.
- 34:00It's two thousand and four, those three years since they had an episode rated
- 34:05this highly. Because the after first of one of the New Year could well
- 34:08be who knows, but maybe they're thinking, oh, the Simpsons have got
- 34:12a New Year's resolution, make good episode, so as I said. January
- 34:15seventh, two thousand and seven, Written by Kevin Curran, directed by Lance
- 34:19Kramer, The Couch gave the Couch and the Simpsons are pinned onto a bulletin
- 34:22board. The episode kicks off at the Springfield Park and they're gonna be watching
- 34:28an outdoor film, but unfortunately there's no place left to sit. Remember back
- 34:31in the day before, you pre put your tickets for the cinema and you
- 34:35didn't get to pick where you sat. You just had to get there early
- 34:37and just hope for a good spot. Do you have a good saving a
- 34:39seat or saving a seat for somebody else's story at the cinema? Not really
- 34:44no, But I mean it's well, I mean going to the cinema now,
- 34:46it was like, oh, really, you've I've got to sit in
- 34:50this seat, you know. I mean, I'm used to the just you
- 34:52know, you pay your ticket and you take your chance. I thought no
- 34:57one went to these things anymore. It's like, what the book my seat?
- 34:59I thought no one went to the movies anymore. Correct. Yeah,
- 35:00but I mean the last couple of times that I've been. I mean yeah,
- 35:02when Lou and I went to see like Mission Impossible, it's like,
- 35:06oh, we've got to actually book seats and stay in those seats. And
- 35:08then we got there and it was a full cinema. So I'm like,
- 35:10oh, look like I'm next to this big fella. Wait a minute,
- 35:13I'm the big fella. It's me. I realized that someone was probably looking
- 35:20on a looking in a mirror. Oh my god, this guy give me
- 35:25sit next to me with his lug purp good hope was at the movies.
- 35:29It was about two months ago, and this check would have been about two
- 35:32seats down, and it was like was packed in there right all we see
- 35:36it. I can't remember. It was Nicola Knight, like at date night
- 35:38and I hear this chick go oh this guy stinks to the person, and
- 35:44every guy that was in the air was just like, it's actually a good
- 35:51fun social experiment. Absolutely, this guy stinks and every guy is paddicked.
- 35:55Then you find out who the real alpha is and that mouslem even if it
- 36:00is no care but yes, they can't find a spot good spot to sit
- 36:05and they have a little battle with the Van Houghton's trying to fight for the
- 36:07space, and Homo uses Maggie throws like a parachute. Got about visual gag?
- 36:12Yeah, and they get the spot. Then Flanders introduces the g rated
- 36:15fair from yester Year. My favorite year, yester Year, because there's always
- 36:19a catch whilst they're watching the movies and putting religious pamphlets on their windshields so
- 36:23you will die in sin. Yeah, you know something like that. Yeah.
- 36:25I can't remember the last time I found a pamphlet anything on my windshield.
- 36:29I don't even do parking tickets on your windshield anymore. You just you
- 36:30just get an notification of the mail. I think, yeah, that's true.
- 36:32It's a lot of scary, isn't it. Yeah. I'm not a
- 36:36fan of that. I like the idea of like, okay, fucked up.
- 36:39It's like the thrill of like you know, you knew you illegally parked.
- 36:43It's like, oh, is there a ticket? There's no ticket.
- 36:45Beat the system and you see the tickets spent down of the way. You're
- 36:49like, quick, children, let's get to the car. Get away of
- 36:54the legal parking. Yes. Uh, they had the bullies the bullys,
- 36:58who was it? They can buy any Carl and emokemplayant fixing the sound and
- 37:01the color and put it in a regular theater. And I was just going,
- 37:05here, what the hell is this film? And why are you even
- 37:07there? You know, if you're complaining about it being a regular seem why'd
- 37:09you come out? Why is the entire sprofit there? It's it's a mystery.
- 37:15It's a weird set up, yet it is indeed, and you're indeed,
- 37:16what even is this movie? You're asking? I mean, what's the
- 37:20point of having it in this episode? Besides killing time? It's just killing
- 37:23time? And I want to see other what you meant, like, what's
- 37:25the deal with silent movies? I mean, Keystone Cops were like a slapstick
- 37:30troop of like they're police officers, but they're always messing up. And you
- 37:32know, I'm getting into wacky Shenanigan's was it most of the time. It's
- 37:36because they're all really capable of pretty much. And the police start throwing badishes
- 37:42at Rodden Tub, which caused it to all break down and inside show Mal
- 37:45demands entertainment, and I was like, fuck, there's your mal, I
- 37:51demand entertainment? Yeah, shore the movie Let's go this is our chance.
- 37:57We've been carrying these hole movies around for you is just waiting for a moment
- 38:00like this. Calm down, everybody, here's a movie of us. Wow,
- 38:08you and I ain't hoping for porn. They put a clip up of
- 38:13their trip to Barnacle Bay and I'll just go hear who is filming this?
- 38:16Oh yeah, I don't know. It's like filming them from a distance,
- 38:20walking down like the pier and stuff. Is this? Did you have a
- 38:25pervert relative? But Marge, she's never know homus, has never seen March.
- 38:30So happy. She takes it back to being a kid, and we
- 38:32all have those memories of that does to be a holiday. But it's just
- 38:36like I remember being there. Oh yeah, absolutely. And it's a great
- 38:38one letter on the episode though, where Marge sort of says, I guess
- 38:40nothing's ever as good as you remember it, And I'm like that is the
- 38:44case for most things, very true, especially old TV shows you enjoy when
- 38:47you're a kid. Don't do it. Just leave them in your memory.
- 38:52Just watch the opening, Watch watch the music. Yeah, I was so
- 38:57happy on that island, never seen March. When it goes somewhere so badly.
- 39:02I'm gonna take her back there by burning that home movie onto a DVG.
- 39:10We have never seen march like a DVG about a place so much.
- 39:15I'm gonna make her dream come true by downloading that movie onto her iPod.
- 39:21I'm sorry, I couldn't figure out how to get that movie onto your iPod.
- 39:24iPods now a dated reference, aren't they very much? So? It
- 39:28made two or three appearances already in this season. I guess that were prominent.
- 39:31I guess we all thought it was like, oh, well, yeah,
- 39:35we're gonna wait at the future listening in their life forever. Yeah.
- 39:38Yeah, they just they just died, didn't they. But Apple killed their
- 39:42own product I did by just slapping all onto the phone. How everything's on
- 39:45your fan made sense or business? Yeah, I suppose because at one point
- 39:50Andrew, we're gonna do it as well, so you might as well try
- 39:52and bitten for the punch. You're don't have to sacrifice you or anything.
- 39:53But they made their money from iPods. I guess that the iPod funded the
- 39:58iPhone. Anything. Yeah, anything you put on an eye in front of
- 40:00it was like, man, that's making a bit of money. And then
- 40:01yeah, I'm considering jumping to iPhone. I'm just like I've had only because
- 40:08of the camera quality. So I've had my last two Samsungs because I want
- 40:13to film all of stuff on my phone. And I'm like, I see
- 40:15someone take a photo of film with their iPhone, it just seems so much
- 40:17better than my Samsung. I must admit this concert that I mentioned a little
- 40:22earlier, Yeah, of course there's the additional concert thing now, however,
- 40:24and sort of holding up their phone to get a bit of footage of the
- 40:28of the band, which they never rewatched. So what the fuck are you
- 40:30wasting your time for? That is true. I mean I took a bunch
- 40:31of pictures because it was like, take something clear. Our friend in California,
- 40:36I used to go to the bar and club a bit. Just say,
- 40:37just go on YouTube later They'll but some screens I can see. It's
- 40:43like that looks a lot sharper, and I'm wondering and I was too dark.
- 40:46Am I doing something wrong? Like it's always at nighttime, like min
- 40:50not if the lights are dim? The footage of my photos is terrible.
- 40:52Oh yeah, what am I doing wrong? I've got that as well.
- 40:55I mean I don't know if I'm just been seduced by advertising, like you
- 40:59know, cool kids, you know, sort of taking pictures of their food
- 41:02on ads for Apple or saming, Like, wow, those photos look so
- 41:06great. Mine looks so crap. What does my big mac look like the
- 41:08one on the board? Why does my big back look like the big bac
- 41:12I ordered? Yeah. I saw a photo of a nineteen ninety eight McDonald's
- 41:15menu the other day and I was like, oh, the nostalgia. It's
- 41:19just like six items McNuggets, a couple of burgers and fries, and it's
- 41:24like this shit was confusing. Nothing was healthy. Yeah, you get your
- 41:28fucking fifty cent cookies. They weren't gonna oh the cookies. The cookies weren't
- 41:31bad. Were they were awesome. There was a thirty cent cone, Oh
- 41:37my god. And occasionally they bring in like a not an off menu item
- 41:42was like for a limited time limited but yeah, they had the Beef Master,
- 41:45which was like, okay, yeah, I think it was like two
- 41:47quarter pound of patties smushed into one. Oh, that's just double meat.
- 41:52It was. It was a big ass patty. Double meat is always better
- 41:55double in every facet, that's correct. Oh boy, so I'm taking the
- 42:02family and it's surprised vacation to Bernacle Bay. Where's Maggie? I thought it
- 42:13was nice that. I'm like, wait, hom it's just actually surprising Marge
- 42:15with a visit to Bartacle Bay. I'm like, what, who is this
- 42:17guy? Yeah, we're sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop.
- 42:21It's like, how's he gonna fuck this? Because she was like, where's
- 42:23Maggie? And I was like, here we go. Oh no, this
- 42:27is all going to plant. What is going on? They across their teams.
- 42:30Okay, you're often not the best start with the showing the silent movie
- 42:34too long, but this is all right. Question do we see Maggie for
- 42:37the rest of the episode? Not to the best of my retic clip,
- 42:42Lisa and Marge go to the museum. That's true by themselves. Homer's on
- 42:45the boat and bart is apparently on the boat too. Where the funk is
- 42:49Maggie? I guess those meth adult ice cream parlor employees was the babysitter doing
- 42:54a side hustle as babysitters. They're leaving now in the ferry that the food
- 42:59for the cat and off for Grandpa because of course, it's just fun to
- 43:01make fun of Grandpa these days. Yes, and they're approaching Barnacle Bay that
- 43:05she thinks it's the fog, and like, there is memories like that when
- 43:08you're a kid. It's just like, you know, the fog or that
- 43:12I obvious, say, the smell of grass being cut takes me back.
- 43:14What's what's the smell for you that takes back to your childhood? I definitely
- 43:17cut grass as one of them. Yea, yeah, yeah, And it's
- 43:20like, oh, Bobby's out the front, cut in the lawn. Yeah,
- 43:22it's very reminiscent of a Saturday. Yes, that's it a Saturday when
- 43:24you're watching cartoon. Yeah, and then it's sort of a whole bunch of
- 43:28other stuff clicks into place as a result. It's either you know, hearing
- 43:30the footy on the radio, or the exact temperature of the sun on your
- 43:36skin or something like that. It's like, oh wow, that's so vivid.
- 43:37I can yeah remember all of that, or you know the song that
- 43:42used to play on AM radio all the time. Yeah, I mean and
- 43:45that all yeah comes into focus with just one one memory and all one sort
- 43:51of memory trigger, like, yeah, the smell of cut grass or whatever.
- 43:53The smell of piss and vodka and regret is like the smell of going
- 43:57out when you're a teenager. They arrive, but the fog smells like Heney
- 44:05turns out that her childhood paradise is now a dump. And I've had moments
- 44:09like this where I'm like, I'm gonna take alliot to where I used to
- 44:10play when I was a kid at this park and I get that and I'm
- 44:13like, oh, the slide's gone and the extrawin all over it. Yeah,
- 44:17this isn't the one kids, Let's just keep just keep driving. And
- 44:22it's they make fun of Brazil here, true, Yeah, because basically what
- 44:25happened was when they went to Brazil for the episode that we reviewed where my
- 44:30really says the penpal correct And basically Brazil was so pissed off with that episode
- 44:35that they and anti Simpsons campaign and then this is their retaliation. Simpsons doesn't
- 44:40name Brazil Brazil campaign. Yeah, well they because they shit can Brazil that
- 44:45entire time. Basically, Brazil just didn't like the jokes. So they come
- 44:49out from commercial and Marge looks at mister funny good feeling it was all broken
- 44:53on the merry go Round and it was swastikas for eyes. Yeah, yeah,
- 44:57yeah, it's the way it goes. And the candy sh shop workers
- 45:00they love tourist because they haven't had one for a long time. And then
- 45:04whooh, this is the thing for you. I'm like, oh, caramel,
- 45:07get your berries. Oh you jeez, you could caramel my arm.
- 45:10I may get the knife in the sticky. Eh hm. Why didn't they
- 45:20stop? Well, that's too much sugar. It's not sugar, it's caramel.
- 45:32Stop mispronouncing caramel. They've got an a in it. They double down
- 45:37on it. They do. Indeed, then they asked them so call him
- 45:39Skipper, because don't think we get his name, the Skipper of the Rotting
- 45:43Pelican. Yes, rotting Pelican was initially one of my trivia questions, and
- 45:45I was like, we're seeing this ship a lot more than I thought we
- 45:47were, so cuts that one out. They make a joke about Clinton here
- 45:52wiggling his way out of another one dated in two thousand and seven. It's
- 45:55bad to say. I don't think anyone watching cared or or kids were you
- 46:00who Clinton was? I mean, we're at the tail end of the of
- 46:04the w Bushy is we're about to elect Obama because he ended in two thousand,
- 46:08right, yes, yeah, so it's seven years he hasn't been in
- 46:12office. And it's like the whole sex scandal was like bit dities. Yeah,
- 46:15and at the time, I mean, it was a thing, but
- 46:19it wasn't really. I don't think anyone was like, oh, we're gonna
- 46:22remember you know, Bill Clinton for that sex scandal. It was we're like,
- 46:24oh, yeah, this happened. I feel like it's the first like
- 46:27Clinton gag in the Simpsons for like seasons, and it happens here. Yeah,
- 46:31in two thousand and seven. What's going on? This island has been
- 46:35on hard times since well since the young Young Fish disappeared. Yum, young
- 46:38fish. Oh, yum, young fisher. I will used to eat here.
- 46:43They're the most delicious fish in the ocean. Better than Cride, much
- 46:46better. Oh baby. He brought him in by the boat load day and
- 46:51night. Than one day they and they were gone. Maybe you just overfished
- 46:54them, maybe they underspawned. Maybe you killed the nile. Remember the fish
- 47:00killed themselves. Maybe you should be a shamed of yourself, or maybe you
- 47:02should marry Millhouse. Yeah that's right. I know about Milhouse that margin realizes
- 47:08that nothing is as good as you remember, and I'm like, yeah,
- 47:10I feel that paid. And then Homer says he knows three people who can
- 47:13make mudget tream come true. And it cuts through the candy shot workers and
- 47:15then not only them working with the Simpsons to sitting there with their glasses on
- 47:20the chili in the sun home. Then course March at the window and I
- 47:23liked this and know whether you liked with a cup house business, and he's
- 47:28fixed the carousel for her and oh Homo man effort. Yeah, as I
- 47:31said a line that I'm just like, eh, you've got Yeah, it's
- 47:35really is one to be ambivalent about it, but it's like, just let
- 47:37us think that, don't say it correct. Yeah, there's a few instances
- 47:42throughout this episode where it's like, you've got gags that should work or that
- 47:46could work on a different seconds, but they don't really land. Some are
- 47:51poorly conceived, and we'll get to that when we get to that. Yeah,
- 47:52there's one or two others where it's like, like Dan's timing is wrong,
- 47:57which is odd because Dan's normally got Swiss watch kind of timing. Yeah,
- 48:00anyway, but yeah, that's yeah, that was one. We're like,
- 48:05this could have gone either way. So they're on the Merry Go Round.
- 48:07We call it Merry Go Round. Yeah, I mean saying carousel,
- 48:09merry go round, don't call it. Yes, And Marge says, we
- 48:13are the kids and they're having some exercise operating the Merry Go Round. Then
- 48:16the day's not over yet because there's a fireworks display which has been done by
- 48:21Homer. And yeah, he's just he's kick assing, he's rocking it.
- 48:22Yeah, he's doing a great job, and everyone's excited by the finale.
- 48:27I'm like that I haven't seen a good fireworks displayed for a long time,
- 48:29Like we haven't just gone because the kids are always asleep by the time the
- 48:31fireworks are going. But I can't wait to take the kids to see him
- 48:35for the first time because they've never seen fireworks really never, Oh my gosh.
- 48:37I mean because I don't usually do it to like nine point thirty.
- 48:40No, you're usually pretty late when we do it here in Geelong at least.
- 48:44Yeah, because I think we do the kids what I mean, yeah,
- 48:45yeah, what do we do it for? I mean, we really
- 48:47do it for day New Year's at the show, they do it as well.
- 48:52Okay, but they usually do it at like nine point thirty for the
- 48:53kids and then like midnight on New Year's Eve for the adults. But my
- 48:59kids always a sleepy night dirty. But I think this year maybe I'll kick
- 49:00him up, because like, can you remember the first that we saw fireworks?
- 49:05Not the first first time, but I I've never been I can remember
- 49:08the age where you sort of got bored of them. Yeah, the allure
- 49:12kind of wears up. I mean I get the feeling that certainly here and
- 49:15Gelong and with all due respect to the people who put on the fireworks here
- 49:17and Gee Long, it's kind of like, okay, and what are the
- 49:20same And there's a green spinner all that kind of stuff. I mean,
- 49:23I keep bringing up my trip to California, but I mean, yeah,
- 49:27we were there for the fourth of July and went to this canty fans around
- 49:30the lake. It's very nice. Everybody was there and enjoy and enjoying and
- 49:34having good time. They did a fire dog, it had my corn dog,
- 49:37and they did a fantastic fireworks display at the very end that went on
- 49:40for a very long time. But it's like, I don't think I've enjoyed
- 49:44fireworks this much in decades. I mean, this is just you know,
- 49:50it's it's well timed, it's well choreographed. They you know, they was
- 49:52a music playing like Arica. There was there was a bit of that,
- 49:55but mostly it was kind of it was you know that marched me did.
- 50:00Man, it's so fireworks. It's just like that. It's just like fireworks.
- 50:05And I'm sure I've said that. It really made me buy into you
- 50:08know, we sort of make fun of our American how Americans get USA America
- 50:14is the best country world. Look at this kind of like I kind of
- 50:17buying into it. You guys are pretty great. You've got a lot to
- 50:22be proud of. But this is obviously where Homer, unfortunately as kick us
- 50:27as ears, accidentally burns down the pier. That's not that's not it's just
- 50:30shit happens sometimes. Yeah, well it's a purely active god. A gust
- 50:37of wind gets a spark and it hits the sole pier that goes up,
- 50:40and it's something you're setting the fireworks at the pier. He's doing away,
- 50:45like you've said, from the pier, but like away from the pier,
- 50:46and the wind blew it back towards him correct. Ye know, he was
- 50:50doing everything right, and then nature just conspired against him. And then the
- 50:53town conspired agains him because they weren't happy about yeah, and they tie him
- 50:57up. I got really uncomfortable with the hook in the nose and everything.
- 51:00I was more like confused by like Marge's lack of really caring. She was
- 51:04just like, at least they didn't you know, do they left your clothes
- 51:07on or you underwe And I'm like, your husband's hooked up by a fucking
- 51:12hook. Yeah, and he's you know, it's clearly affecting the point where
- 51:14he's sort of doing that bordle bordle, the kind of stroke speak. I
- 51:19guess what I say, which is uncomfortable. I've got to I've got a
- 51:22deathly fear of having a stroke. I've got to say, Man, heart
- 51:24attack I can handle, hopefully, it'll just take me out like that because
- 51:28of all my cholesterol and I've eaten that a straight's worth it. I regret
- 51:32nothing. Uh yeah, but a stroke, I'd be like, ah,
- 51:37so what's the difference between a heart attack and a stroke? Then? I
- 51:40think I think a stroke sort of cuts off blood supply and to your brain,
- 51:45doesn't it. I know, I know what happens is, Well,
- 51:47my grandma had a stroke and she can't move her arms, her left arm,
- 51:51probably anymore like the whole left side of a body. I think its
- 51:53with the nervous system. Yeah, I don't know. I'm not mad on
- 51:59that happening. I'm not matter it even happened in touch? Would that ever
- 52:01happens? Touch? Touch? We go to whatever this is, how do
- 52:06you want to go out? Oh? And a pile of money surrounded by
- 52:09many beautiful later very much. It's a cop out to say in my sleep,
- 52:15that's that's the dream, right, very much? Yeah? Yeah,
- 52:19or just but but quickly. Yeah, I don't want to drawn out.
- 52:22That's the plan. You'll never see it. Gun. He's giving me back
- 52:30in two weeks. But the sailor here says he can come fish off all
- 52:35the all the money that he owes now to rebuild the pier. And he
- 52:38says, are you queer, strange or quick gain? Yeah? A bit
- 52:42of both, And then they let's traffic in some stereotypes. Then Homie gets
- 52:47introduced to the crew. I want you to meet my crew. It's my
- 52:52first mate, Billy, and this is Fausto. Yeah, he just plays
- 52:57with that knife all the name. It's my great man. Now I need
- 53:01a new thing. I liked Fasto with his knife. Yeah, his thing.
- 53:07He's gonna find a new thing because he bustled his knife. I feel
- 53:08like if this was a character in like a season eight or seven episode,
- 53:10we talk about him a lot more. He's like he stands out because he's
- 53:15like a season eighteen episode, no one ever talks about him. Yeah,
- 53:19but I mean he was like one good one liner away from being quite memorable.
- 53:23Yeah, because I feel like people would be going, it's my thing.
- 53:25If you feel like in the Golden ear of the Simpsons, you know,
- 53:29yeah, that could be he could he could be quite memorable. Yeah,
- 53:31he really could. Yeah. I quite liked him. But then Homer
- 53:36eating the live fish for me not great, but that the ugly fish that
- 53:38was like, oh, and he's like, let me just test make sure
- 53:42I need he buys it. I'm like, that thing's alive. Yeah,
- 53:45gross, stupid doesn't make sense. No, not for me. Homer then
- 53:49serves baked for dinner and realize that he's done the wrong thing. Is this
- 53:52where he's doing the loud whisper? Could be I think, well, I
- 53:57know he says it's it is because he goes, you're very ugly. It's
- 54:00opposite there, Yeah, okay, yeah, that's right. Yeah. But
- 54:05I did like the fact that Homer, being an idiot, turned out to
- 54:07say the day correct. Yeah, about him ruining the day for a change.
- 54:10Yeah, and the young young fish take the bait because of Home's bait.
- 54:15They they it's catching the fish again and saves the town. But I
- 54:20hated the chief fish clubber Homer. I did not like that at all.
- 54:24Look, I'm trying to think of ways that this joke could have possibly worked
- 54:29as a joke. I mean I can't no, just like I don't know,
- 54:35maybe have the leader was Homer's wanted a job on the whole time or
- 54:37a title. I mean everyone's got like, you know, Billy does this
- 54:40and Fouso does that, and that's the like, Oh I wish I was,
- 54:44you know, a proper seaman and had it like a job or something
- 54:46like that. Here you go, Homer, here's your job, and he's
- 54:51kind of like, ah, and then that's it. But yeah, him
- 54:53actually like clubbing the fish quite graphically well, I mean you don't see the
- 54:59fish getting club. You see the aftermath of it, and to the tune
- 55:01of at Last, which is a really lovely song as well as like I
- 55:07get what you're going for, you know, the whole juxtaposition of beautiful music
- 55:10and really disgusting act. But it doesn't work in this episode, and it
- 55:15just doesn't work generally. Just had an idea of another way we can sort
- 55:19of tweaking your ending and adding it just throwing things out there. So Lisa
- 55:23her whole thing, she's already planned the seed of She thinks that they're overfishing,
- 55:27right, she wants them to stop overfishing. They get back to the
- 55:30shore and they look at all the fishness thanks to Homer, and I'll hear
- 55:35Homer, you can be the chief clubber, right, And it was like
- 55:37go home. Lisa's sitting there looking at home and going, don't do it,
- 55:40dad, and Homa's like, I can't do it. I can't,
- 55:43my little girl. And then Homer ends up letting the fish all free.
- 55:45And then they come to conclusion, well, how he's supposed to rebuild the
- 55:49town now? And then it cuts to the tree. So then Homer Lisa
- 55:52gets her wishes, he makes he does a good father act in the process,
- 55:57he wins us over his viewers because he doesn't club the fish. Yeah,
- 56:00the fish will go free if you have to have the fish coming gag
- 56:02and have like another person do it. We just don't have the fish getting
- 56:06club have Homer not Well, you've got to have that set up, you
- 56:09know, you've got to have it set up before, Homer. You know,
- 56:12it's like one of you're like the person who normally clubs fish doesn't survive
- 56:16the shipwreck or doesn't survive the perfect storm. Homer, it's your job now.
- 56:22And he's like, oh, no, I can't do it. I
- 56:24don't know. Maybe I was thinking that they just go back to the showl
- 56:28without the perfect storm, the whole perfect storm. So we take that out
- 56:30of the equation. It's the case of, well, then you've got a
- 56:32whole like five or ten minutes that's just missing from the episode. More silent,
- 56:37more, more silent movie. Oh boy, this have we han't clear
- 56:42us yet? Gay panic? Yes, ship never too much? Oh god,
- 56:51just fixing the Simpsons. It's harder than we thought. But you're right,
- 56:55I mean, yeah, the club in the fish gag did not land.
- 56:57No, not at all. No March and Lisa then go to the
- 57:00Barnacle Bay Oceanographic Institute the signs of SpongeBob and the global warming in the next
- 57:05three years di rauma thing, and we see the guy seeing the Perfect Storm.
- 57:08Just in case you weren't aware, this is a Perfect Storm parody.
- 57:15I've never seen the Perfect Storm another movie? Should I watch that one?
- 57:16It's a pretty good one, it is, okay, Yeah, you're a
- 57:19good cast, well made. Is it just a disaster movie essentially? Not
- 57:22really a disaster movie or such. I mean it's more so like a you
- 57:25initially think, oh, this is men just when you thought it was seas
- 57:29to go back in the water, men working together to you know, overcome
- 57:32obstacles, and you know, it's pretty good. Who's in the Clooney Wahlburg
- 57:37Cloney in it? Yeah, cloneys lead. I always thought that Josh what's
- 57:42his name was in it? Now that's that's Pearl Harbor, isn't it.
- 57:45Yes? Yes, yeah, different p a completely different person. But it's
- 57:51also a harbor and waters. Yeah, Perfect Storm not bad at all.
- 57:59In fact, I think they've sort of tailored the captain to look a bit
- 58:01like Cloney and Perfect Storm. Ah, maybe that's what it could be then,
- 58:05because it just seems like you've gone out of your way to make him
- 58:07feel special. This is this screams guest star does. Yeah, that's what
- 58:10I was thinking. I was like, Oh, is that so that was
- 58:13Maurice Smash Okay. Then it turns out you couldn't get George Cliney for this.
- 58:16I was thinking, Yeah, clearly the stage would have he been because
- 58:21remember that stay he was in South Park and showed up on friends collect them
- 58:24all from the network like that's it's amazing. He never sort of stuck his
- 58:30head into Simpson's HQ. Then Fausta doesn't like to look at the weather and
- 58:36this trick knee plays up the cabin. I'm like, this is my dad.
- 58:37My dad used to say this. He goes, Rain's not coming when
- 58:40he doesn't hurt. Oh, He's like, yep, rain's coming to my
- 58:44knee hurts. I'm like, daddy full of ship And turns out the rain
- 58:46would be it's true. My friend Anthony has that's weird. He'll know that
- 58:52you know storms are coming when when he's when he's bad, knee acts.
- 58:55How do you know he's check the weather report? But we come back from
- 59:00commercial margin is now concerned because they've seen it's gonna be a perfect storm,
- 59:05and she's in the lighthouse, she's looking out, and she thinks that she
- 59:07concentrates hard enough they love are so strong that she'll be able to hear his
- 59:08thoughts. I think that's from Perfect Storm as well, is that it's been
- 59:12a very long time since I've seen them that establishing like Star Wars. Maybe
- 59:19we think of a film before that where it's like reading someone's thoughts. I
- 59:22guess they did, like Toilet Zone and stuff, didn't they Yeah, I'm
- 59:23sure they would have, but I'm trying to recall if it actually isn't Perfect
- 59:28Storm. But I get the feeling does have sort of some melodramatic moments like
- 59:30okay, yeah, if not necessarily like read my thoughts come back to me.
- 59:35It's more like, you know, you'll have someone like it's better they're
- 59:38going I want them to come back to me, and all that kind of
- 59:40stuff. But you do sometimes have that feeling where it's just like I just
- 59:44concentrate hard enough, I could be able to read, not read someone's thoughts,
- 59:46but it's just like I can sense them somewhere. I've never thought this
- 59:50I've never thought this. Really. I was like, you know, I
- 59:52remember my uncle first passed away when I was younger. I'm like, maybe
- 59:54if I just like think hard enough, I feel like I'm like not communicating
- 59:59to him, but it's just like he can like I can sense him.
- 1:00:01But having said that, I was like, twelve, Yeah, have you
- 1:00:05said that? I mean, I think I've said on previous shows, I'm
- 1:00:07really interested in deja vu. Yeah. Oh, I've experienced it several times.
- 1:00:13Yeah, and for it to happen it's weird, man, it really
- 1:00:15is. And I mean, I mean it's something that really happens well to
- 1:00:20me least, and clearly. I'm like, I've dreamt thish, I've been
- 1:00:23through this moment, even if it's just like three seconds of like I was
- 1:00:27in this particular spot and yeah, this particular thing was happening. I don't
- 1:00:30remember anything else, but I do recall this. It's enough to get you
- 1:00:34thinking, Okay, are there like multiverses and all that shit is? You
- 1:00:38know, are we all existing? Is everything happening all at once? Someone
- 1:00:44about to put a chicken in my life and make her gain? But yeah,
- 1:00:50I mean that is a South Park reference. Is indeed a South Park
- 1:00:52reference, tuning to go down to South Park where we talked about the panaverse.
- 1:00:58Indeed. But yeah, if something like that exists, and empirically to
- 1:01:02me it does, what else does it? What else does exist? A
- 1:01:07ghost? Real? There's like the thing is, there's a reason for us
- 1:01:10being here. We're just too stupid to figure it out, and we never
- 1:01:13know. Stop trying to figure it out now, just just dig it,
- 1:01:15just live it, Just enjoy it, jkl Man. Just keep living.
- 1:01:20Don't worry about what you're going to be doing after you're gone. Just fucking
- 1:01:22enjoy what that you're here? Correct, correct it? But you need to
- 1:01:25finger discaps, that's the thing. Yeah. So then we get the boat
- 1:01:30getting destroyed by the water, and we turn the bart Is in the in
- 1:01:32the life raft case, so they've got no life raft now of course as
- 1:01:35well. And he's not there because he loves Homer's there because he didn't want
- 1:01:37to do ars and craft. We didn't want to paint crabshell. Yes,
- 1:01:40just smash him, and Homer says, you did the right thing. Then
- 1:01:44Moe and Lenny and Carl Or get a terrible feeling that's something bad has happened.
- 1:01:47The Lenny to Fausto and marged hover and they go to leave, but
- 1:01:52it's raining outside, so they don't. I'm kind of glad because I thought
- 1:01:54it would have been a really cliche ending for Oh the fans sends something,
- 1:01:58so now they're going to go and save the day. Was that a Perfect
- 1:02:00Storm reference at all? I'm wondering about that. I think it might be.
- 1:02:04I'm doing a bit of research Internet research because there are a few things
- 1:02:08I wanted to find out here. Let's have a look at notes no reception,
- 1:02:15they're not really telling us anything. No, thanks a lot, Wikipedia,
- 1:02:20because yeah, like I said, it's been a long time since seen
- 1:02:22Perfect Storm. But I'm pretty sure there is a thing where it's you know,
- 1:02:23all these people who live by the water, except they don't in Springfield
- 1:02:28are kind of like, oh boy, oh they're out on the water.
- 1:02:30Oh, something terrible was gonna happen or something like that. I was wondering
- 1:02:32about, and I think we might be an into this. The bit where
- 1:02:35Homer goes to the bow and is like she to the golf ball at the
- 1:02:37bower. Yeah, I'm like, what's what's all that about? That's going
- 1:02:40to be from something? Right that has to be perfect storm has to be
- 1:02:44you would think so. But I was, yeah, I'm going to google
- 1:02:45perfect storm golf ball, see what happens, okay? Or why yeah,
- 1:02:49wife are quite a golf ball even or both perfect storm golf ball and we
- 1:02:54get nothings perfect Storm movie movie storm golf ball. Because I was very curious
- 1:03:05about the meaning of the point, because it seems like it's just got to
- 1:03:08be a direct reference to something. But I couldn't find anything online. So
- 1:03:14let us know, listener, Simpsons mailbag at gmail dot com, can you
- 1:03:16tell us what they were trying to take off there? If anything, please
- 1:03:21do because even like the visual, just look the way it looked at it
- 1:03:23looked like it was just a direct rip off of something very much so.
- 1:03:29But I watched this and I was just getting anxiety, Like I'm scared of
- 1:03:35water at the best of times. I can't imagine being in this kind of
- 1:03:38situation. I've seeing a wave just approaching the boat like that. Oh goodness,
- 1:03:42yeah, no, absolutely terrifying. No. I mean, I've been
- 1:03:45fortunate never to be in a situation like that, but I imagine I would
- 1:03:49soil myself quite dramatically. Yeah, they cut to before we get that though,
- 1:03:53so they say they say shit prayer, and then the captain says,
- 1:03:59don't worry. The sea would never take a lot of a ten year old
- 1:04:00boy. Than is it here? Should I hate him with the shovel?
- 1:04:03That's that's that's that's another whisper. Yeah, what's the code word we've avoided
- 1:04:10this time of the entire episode? Oh mad see give her a fish,
- 1:04:16take her of boats, toilet to the world. The Greeks call you Poseidon,
- 1:04:21the Romans Aquaman, look into that starfish heart and protect our souls so
- 1:04:29we might live to go tubing Undy again. Do you think your mother will
- 1:04:34ever remarry? In about two seconds, will you let up? Shud chuck?
- 1:04:43The Greeks call you beside, and the Romans Aquaman. I'm like,
- 1:04:46your timing's off, Dan. I mean you just say, you know,
- 1:04:49if you sort of didn't have that gap between Romans and Aquaman and be like,
- 1:04:53you know, your brain's gonna take it second or two to catch up,
- 1:04:56Like, oh wait a minute, that's not bad. But yeah,
- 1:04:58you're sort of like Aquimen. You don't need to sell us on the punchline
- 1:05:03that much. But then we get the pre scene that hopefully the boiler blew
- 1:05:08up and shared their faces straight off, and I was like, you know
- 1:05:10what, I was a little bit un comfortable. I was like, because
- 1:05:13of what happened earlier in the year with the submarine that explained that. I
- 1:05:16was like, ah, it's kind of apparently laugh at this kind of stuff
- 1:05:19anymore. Really, A lot of people were yeah, no, I feel
- 1:05:25bad for the kid, absolutely, yeah, yeah, because like, you
- 1:05:29know, great adults, you like this kid. He went along with his
- 1:05:33dad, and I'm like, how old was he? He was he a
- 1:05:35teenager or fourteen fifteen? Oh? Fuck, yeah, that's that's not good.
- 1:05:40Nah, not good at all. But they arrived okay, and the
- 1:05:44Portuguese police are there to get faster, yeah, the immigration department, yeah
- 1:05:48yeah. And he bails and then explains how he said the day. Turns
- 1:05:54out he said he found menmaids, and I was like, oh, what
- 1:05:55is going on here? And then turns out he actually just passed out.
- 1:05:59They get brought up by a Japanese boat. How times to jump back in
- 1:06:01the water. They really fucked the ending up with this episode. I think
- 1:06:05it's kind of a mess. I mean I felt very rushed. Yeah,
- 1:06:09I mean, I like the idea of they want to build thro the perfect
- 1:06:13storm, and it's like, but how do we get out of it?
- 1:06:14I don't know, Homopix, he sees me cut down some trees. That's
- 1:06:17everyone's sad. Yeah, the tree, the tree bit. I mean,
- 1:06:20I think they sort of botched it a bit, but I think it's not
- 1:06:23a bad idea in concept of life. Yeah, for this town to succeed,
- 1:06:28something bad is going to have to happen to the natural world. Yep.
- 1:06:31So it's either you know, you over fish or or you cut down
- 1:06:35every tree. I mean, a happy medium. Doesn't it exactly make for
- 1:06:39good comedy, But we do get a Larry Flint, We get a Larry
- 1:06:43Flint reference. They are bad, yeah, for all his hustler and barely
- 1:06:46legal magazines magazines. So overall this episode, yeah, not as bad as
- 1:06:56what was last week's one. It was that bad that I didn't recall the
- 1:07:00hall hoarded couple. Uh no, no, hang on a sick It was
- 1:07:03killed Gill Volumes one and two. Oh boy, no wonder our memories failed
- 1:07:09us. I think it was our brains were thinking better than us and trying
- 1:07:12to do a good job of suppressing. Yeah, that was we didn't like
- 1:07:16kill Gill Volumes one and two, but we didn't and we didn't mind talking
- 1:07:20about it, and hopefully you don't mind listening to it. What do we
- 1:07:24learn, Bomber? Would you learn for the episode? Mister Davis? That
- 1:07:30for me to get my issues of Hustler and Barely Legal, it's worth cutting
- 1:07:32down a forest or two. How many magazines do you do you think you
- 1:07:36purchased a Hustler over the years. Oh no, I don't think I have
- 1:07:39a purchased Hustler or any new dy magazine. Oh you're plenty. Yeah,
- 1:07:44would you like to see my collection? I'm a child sorted by althabetical and
- 1:07:48by breast size. I'm a childer before the Internet, but which I meant,
- 1:07:53well, I was a young adult pre internet, so like and kids
- 1:07:57won't experience it anymore, But like, I think why generation would laugh?
- 1:08:00This one's where you had that one moment growing up where you found Newdy magazine
- 1:08:02in a fucking a bush somewhere or something. You're like, this is gross
- 1:08:05but cute. I'm not seeing this in real life, so I might as
- 1:08:11well check it out on the printed peek. No, I never bought any
- 1:08:15Larry Flint publications because they always struck me as kind of it's gonna I'm gonna
- 1:08:19sound like a bit hell and love joy here, but or more flat but
- 1:08:23bit vulgar. You know. Hustler was always we're showing you the whole butcher
- 1:08:27shoppers as they as they say. But you're looking at You're like, I
- 1:08:30don't know if I should be looking at this. Oh yeah, it's like,
- 1:08:34I'm not studying medicine. What's it lighting? I think it's a lighting
- 1:08:38clickor well you can see your kidneys. It's like, this is too much.
- 1:08:44I don't think I want my smart with a little for nest, which
- 1:08:45is why you that is the quote of the of the week. I want
- 1:08:48my smart little fitness. You'd get Playboy or Panouse. It's like, okay,
- 1:08:54well, you know he's a naked lady. But this thing is the
- 1:08:56lighting is very nice and you know, it's quite tasteful. But at the
- 1:08:59same time, hey, that lady's got new pants. So yeah, for
- 1:09:01you know, a not enlightened teenage boy, you know, also horny,
- 1:09:06it's like, yeah, this is getting a spot, getting it done.
- 1:09:09Also, I was talking about this with the Made of Mine online and the
- 1:09:12fact that you know, back in the late eighties early nineties, it's a
- 1:09:16it's a cliche to say, wow, I read Playboy for the articles.
- 1:09:19Playboy heads are legitimately good articles. Yeah. Yeah, the film reviewer was
- 1:09:23actually really good. That's an I was talking about the guys like, we
- 1:09:29can't say this to anybody because nobody will believe us. But yeah, the
- 1:09:31guy's name was Bruce Williamson and he was a legit good reviewer. Hey Bubby,
- 1:09:34when I grew up, I'm going to be this and he's like,
- 1:09:38you ain't going to be no woman by the article is dad, this is
- 1:09:43the twenty first century. We're not being that inclusive. I have a look
- 1:09:45at this for the leaders look at this for the article's dad is going to
- 1:09:48be reading that Dad magazine for the articles from this forward. Your name will
- 1:09:54be all right. It's some of the guy Davis new name Championship. He
- 1:09:58curn't leaderboard stands at this in first position, we have three way time Luke
- 1:10:02McKay, Philip J. Hawkins, and Kyl muldoon or on ten points.
- 1:10:05Oh my god, that's I couldn't believe it last week. Yeah, but
- 1:10:10you know, it's just constantly shifting. It was like, oh my god,
- 1:10:13this is incredible, and yeah, a three way tie for first place.
- 1:10:16Let's see how it goes. We dropped some new names and the first
- 1:10:19one that gets one point is Nautical by Nature. Oh that is Luke McKay,
- 1:10:26which puts him out right first for now, my god, for now
- 1:10:30on eleven points. Well, let's see who gets two points for the dull
- 1:10:34Sidon adventure. That is Brian Hughes with his first points of the season so
- 1:10:41far. So that means that Luke is still safe in first position on eleven
- 1:10:44points. Well done Brian on two points all right, but three points go
- 1:10:47to deadliest catch. Ooh so these three points change things around. So but
- 1:10:56not for Luke McKay. He's still in first on eleven points. Philip J.
- 1:11:00Hawk's and Camaldin still on ten and second now, but Justin Williams has
- 1:11:03jumped from three to six points, putting him outright third. Oh boy,
- 1:11:08Justin Williams, well done with her three points. Now we have an outright
- 1:11:11third position. Well done, Justin, very well done, Justin, and
- 1:11:14thank You's things interesting? Yeah, looks like you better not miss you come
- 1:11:19for the King. Our first one comes from Andrew JP just for you.
- 1:11:29Yeah, have you ever been fishing? I tried it once on a weekend
- 1:11:33away with cricket mates, but I wasn't a fan. I have been fishing,
- 1:11:41but yeah, I think like you Andrew JP, I was, is
- 1:11:45this all there is? I have to hope this worm. But putting on
- 1:11:47a hook, well there's that too. Yeah. There are some people who
- 1:11:51make it look very you know, fulfilling. I like looking well, not
- 1:11:57for hours on end, but you know, a good fly fisher, how
- 1:12:00they're sort of very elegant with their rod. The idea of like catching the
- 1:12:05fish, I'm like fine with It's just like I feel bad about catching it
- 1:12:10and just letting it choke to death, yeah, or doing the smash or
- 1:12:14the or the slit or whatever. Yeah. And as far as like just
- 1:12:17you know, sitting on the dock of the bay with your your rod and
- 1:12:19your reel, It's like, I imagine that could be like quite a meditative
- 1:12:25or contemplative pastime while you're just waiting. It's like how golf ruins a good
- 1:12:30walk, Fishing could just ruin a good sit by the bay. Fun story
- 1:12:33for locals here, So you've been to Geelong, you know, we have
- 1:12:36the Adventure Park. Right, we do one of the earliest home videos of
- 1:12:41myself when I was about three or four, I want to say, and
- 1:12:45the Aventure Park used to just be a trout farm and it's my dad knew
- 1:12:48the guy who owned the trout farm. And there's a video of myself,
- 1:12:51my dad and my uncle Jock fishing at this trout farm and me catching this
- 1:12:55trout but I wasn't really, I don't really it in. I get the
- 1:12:57bite and I just run backwards and to the fish that I out of the
- 1:13:00water. That's brilliant. So yeah, so that you see footage there on
- 1:13:05this whole video of where the Aventure Park is, there's just nothing there.
- 1:13:10It's just traut f traut far, just me not really just running backwards until
- 1:13:15the until the fishes eventually add the w on like half fifty meters down the
- 1:13:18track. It's brilliant. Did you guys is from Ryan King. Did you
- 1:13:24guys ever watched movies on an iPod? I can't believe we used to watch
- 1:13:27movies on a screen so small. I still have an eyepodclastic that I use
- 1:13:30every day, but only for my music and podcast. Sounds like a man
- 1:13:31of your taste. Indeed. Indeed, I used to have like the little
- 1:13:34iPod Nano and I actually threw down a few bucks recently just to get an
- 1:13:40MP three player, because foolishly, I thought, I'm gonna go running and
- 1:13:45I want to have music, but I don't want to carry my phone while
- 1:13:46I'm doing it. I mean, I've got I've got wireless headphones for my
- 1:13:50for my phone with your big old man flat case. Now as well,
- 1:13:54it's so heavy, that's the old man phone flapcase. That's true. I
- 1:14:01went through various sort of things. I bought one of those things that you
- 1:14:03put around your your bicep and you put your phone into their I'm like,
- 1:14:06dickhead, Yeah this sucks. Look at me. Why did I do this?
- 1:14:11Some children? So you can put our phoness high up on our arms
- 1:14:15tryse. Plus the other thing is my guns are just so huge that it
- 1:14:18didn't work exactly. But yeah, I ended up getting a little MP peas
- 1:14:23three player and like, yeah, why do they stop making these? These
- 1:14:26were ale? Yeah, this is what Andrew JP actually brings up something here.
- 1:14:30He had a PSP fifteen years ago. With PSPs and he used to
- 1:14:33get um D movie discs oh wow, who are those? And I was
- 1:14:38like, oh, yeah, they are going to be a thing of the
- 1:14:40future. No, they died it with the HDDVD. They didn't And every
- 1:14:44form of physical media. I never watched anything on an ipile. Did you
- 1:14:46see JB High Fire's physical media section. It's getting smaller and smaller by the
- 1:14:49year now, Oh yeah, this isn't it. I was like, Oh,
- 1:14:53it's like the dark corner of the shop now. Yeah, like you
- 1:14:56can get more Funko pops and you can do yeah. I'm like, oh,
- 1:14:59like half of yeah physical media section is now collectible shit like pops and
- 1:15:02game board games and stuff. And I'm like, ah, oh boy.
- 1:15:06Yeah. It was like one row for like Blu ray like new release Blu
- 1:15:11rays now and I'm like that's right, and that's not even normally releases.
- 1:15:14Yeah, like the four K sections just like one shelf now. It is
- 1:15:16Yeah, sad, sad times. But no, I never watched it on
- 1:15:23on a little screen. I don't really watch movies on on my phone or
- 1:15:28anything like that. I will watch YouTube videos on it, though I have
- 1:15:30sometimes like watched things at work when I was like watching Simpsons episode to reviewed
- 1:15:33ever on my lunch break at work. That's all. I had my phone.
- 1:15:36But if I can, I will not know I have be able to
- 1:15:41watch somewhere else. I will not watch my phone. Yeah. I mean,
- 1:15:43given the option between say, watching it on my laptop and my phone,
- 1:15:45I'll inventiably take the laptop. Yeah. The order you get, the
- 1:15:47harder is to see. There was that time the subtitles on a phone screen.
- 1:15:53Brian Hughes, did you read the Sebastian Younger especially Younger book? Yeah?
- 1:15:58Especially Yeah, I'm not sure if you do pronounce it younger or Younger?
- 1:16:01Write the perfect He wrote the Perfect Storm. Yeah, I've never read
- 1:16:04The Perfect Storm, but he wrote another. He's a actually a really fucking
- 1:16:09fantastic journalist, and he wrote one of the best nonfiction books I've ever read,
- 1:16:15actually called War, which was he got sort of embedded with was it
- 1:16:19good for anything? No, absolutely nothing, saying it because death. No.
- 1:16:28He wrote a book called War, and he was sort of embedded with
- 1:16:30this with this unit in Afghanistan, and it was I mean, I'm so
- 1:16:34it was the Perfect storm, a real yeah, perfect song plased on a
- 1:16:36real storm. Because Brian followed up by saying he found this episode incredibly tasteless,
- 1:16:42considering that they made fun of the deaths of at least thirteen people.
- 1:16:44It was a big deal in nineteen ninety one, that's true. I mean,
- 1:16:47I guess it's enough. Time has passed it. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:16:50bad, like those guys, what's luck I brought up with the with
- 1:16:54the submarine. I was just like, it just feels like, I feel
- 1:16:57like no one's going to make like submarine death for like, was that really
- 1:17:02that's almost starting to fade from you know, the public memory as well,
- 1:17:06it is, but it just feels like, h on top of that,
- 1:17:10you had a lot of dipties of those rich folks got what they deserved,
- 1:17:13which is wrong. But I was like, yeah, but there was a
- 1:17:15kid on there. Very true, very true. Uh, Brian, Yeah,
- 1:17:18Sebastian Young fantastic. But is it the books great? Okay, well,
- 1:17:23it's one that I really should check out. But yeah, I mean
- 1:17:25yeah, Sebastian Young is a really fantastic writer, and his book War is
- 1:17:29one that I certainly recommend. A couple more here Kira and Russell. It's
- 1:17:32a fishing related question. Do you have fishing lakes slash ponds in a straw
- 1:17:35that offer fishing in great numbers. I remember knowing one guy getting a European
- 1:17:39match fishing pole shipped over. As you said, there was a very small
- 1:17:42following for the UK style fishing, and it's always made me wonder. Good
- 1:17:45Lord, don't quite understand the question, but is it. Do you mean
- 1:17:48like a trout farm. We've got the bay. Well, we used to
- 1:17:53have the thing down, remember see got paddock like this. It was an
- 1:17:57annual thing. I don't do it anymore, but they used to put out
- 1:18:00into the seag down where McDonald's is in ord Toh yeah, yeah, the
- 1:18:03water there and it used to be a trout catching competition. So they put
- 1:18:06the trap in there, let them grow and then whoever caught the biggest trout
- 1:18:10would win into the shooting the fish in a barrel competition. That's what it
- 1:18:14sounds like. That's not a big place. No, it's not at all
- 1:18:17that, but it's for the kids to go down and catch the trout.
- 1:18:19Again, that's nice. We've a Cory Bay around Geelong and I mean I
- 1:18:23see a lot. We've got a lot of big snapper around there. A
- 1:18:25couple of weeks ago. Okay, then, yeah, I know I often
- 1:18:27see you old Greek gentlemen with their fishing rods. Yes, my my,
- 1:18:31I was so proud the other day. So we're walking around the promenade at
- 1:18:36Eastern Beach here, yes, and you know it's deep out there, right,
- 1:18:40and Elliott's like, we're looking over and he goes, dude. I
- 1:18:43was like, what are you doing? He goes, jaws could be down
- 1:18:45there. And I was like, ship kid, you scaring me? Getting
- 1:18:50you educated that kid? Well? And you know, did you see my
- 1:18:54status the other day about the a c DC. I did. So I'm
- 1:18:58sitting in here editing right. Nicholas out there. I say this in the
- 1:19:00Friends podcast last night. Nicholas out there cooking with Elliott and Alice, just
- 1:19:03like stirring the thing. And then he just goes, lock up your daughters
- 1:19:08and lock up your wife. And I was like, man, yeah,
- 1:19:13little bond Scott, Yeah, he like he loves he said. He literally
- 1:19:15sat down last night because I hate He finished school early, kit together the
- 1:19:18school orientation. He finished kinto early, so he was back like an hour
- 1:19:21early, and I had a bit of stuff to do, so much just
- 1:19:24sit here and watch TV. He watched nearly a full hour of an ACDC
- 1:19:26concert. Loved every second. He's just into ACDC now. It's just he's
- 1:19:30thinking Angus Young's like his hero. Oh that's brilliant. A little lyitch.
- 1:19:36One more question, one more cash question, Justin Williams. Are there any
- 1:19:41places you went to as a child that you loved? However if you go
- 1:19:44there now, it's a disappointment or it's very run down. There's an amusement
- 1:19:46park and campground about an hour from me that my wife and I loved as
- 1:19:49kids, but we took our kids there last summer and it was just completely
- 1:19:53crap. What's the one place for you? Oh gosh. I mean,
- 1:19:58well they've remade sort of to the Eastern Beach Promenade. Yeah, I mean
- 1:20:01Highlight Park. I went there are a few bit. A few times I
- 1:20:05bring it back and I see photos and I'm like, it looks like it's
- 1:20:08like Dodgers in a couple of life. Oh yeah, it was kind of
- 1:20:11a death trap. Yeah, even back in my back in my day.
- 1:20:15And there's like there used to be a giant slide near Seagull Paddic that I
- 1:20:17was mentioning. It was like bringing back the giant slide and I'm like Dad's
- 1:20:20like, yeah, it's not funning any more. Like Dad, would you
- 1:20:23like ore you go down there? Think you see how fucking high it is
- 1:20:25and there's no side rails on it? Well, is the reason it's not
- 1:20:27there anymore. Kids probably died on that thing. Which one are you talking
- 1:20:30about? Is a giant slide near Seagull Paddic behind mc donald's, Well,
- 1:20:32oh yeah, I'm thinking one there there's one that used to be there used
- 1:20:36to be a playground next to McDonald's KFC on the Melbourne Road. That's the
- 1:20:41one. Yeah, Is that paddic is the one's tracking behind North Jaal McDonald's
- 1:20:45now the body of water. Yeah, that's there's a North Geelong one.
- 1:20:48There's the cry on McDonald's, the Cryer one, so they said on the
- 1:20:53hot because that's also on the highway. Yeah, and there's KFC McDonald's right
- 1:20:56there on the highway asking Oh my god, that is correct. You mean
- 1:20:58it's dead park? Is that what it's called? Yes, yes, yes,
- 1:21:02it was a massive playground. Yeah. When I was little, I
- 1:21:05used to go up to Channel seven every Sunday with my dad because he was
- 1:21:10on this TV show call whorl of Sport and on the way back. We
- 1:21:14would always stop at Stead Park and so Dad could have a read of the
- 1:21:18form guide in the in the newspaper and I would get out and play and
- 1:21:23that. Yeah, they had that massive slide. That was fantastic. H
- 1:21:27And now I look back at its like, I'm surprised I didn't get like
- 1:21:30urns or no, like slices of my butt cheeks taken off like at the
- 1:21:34deli. Yeah, because it's like, I'm pretty sure two of these things
- 1:21:38are not quite a so you get a bit of And then they took the
- 1:21:44playground down and replaced it with an information center, which in twenty twenty three,
- 1:21:47I drove past the other van went who the fuck is going to an
- 1:21:50information center? In twenty twenty three there's people like ultimately there's people in there.
- 1:21:56Employee like what are they doing? Who goes in there? It was
- 1:21:59like, hey, go, where's an information center? I'm an information center?
- 1:22:02What the fuck? But yeah, it's usual. But Donna had a
- 1:22:11point, this used to be my playground. Yeah, that's it's usually playgrounds,
- 1:22:14isn't it. Where you still looking and go, oh, you used
- 1:22:15to be fantastic, and now you've either been you've either fallen to disrepair,
- 1:22:20you've vanished, or you've just been made over into a into a modern playground,
- 1:22:26to a safe playground. That's correct. No one's gonna break their armor
- 1:22:29here. It's like now one will find a question for you. Are you
- 1:22:33ready to go to BALI very very close? Yes, yes, I've got
- 1:22:38got my passport, gum my sunscreen. Yeah, that's pretty much all one.
- 1:22:43But we'll discussing before on the air. There's always that fear of forgetting
- 1:22:45something isn't there and you know you're gonna get to the airport and go fuck.
- 1:22:48Yeah, So I needed this now to have it. I mean,
- 1:22:53I pray myself on taking light just as just as you do. And I
- 1:22:56mean I'm not taking check on luggage. I'm just taking carry on luggage.
- 1:23:00So it's like, can I take a laptop or anything? I'm taking a
- 1:23:02label top. Yeahah, It's like, how is gonna wasch porn dead?
- 1:23:06What am I going to masturbate with my memory? Idiots like a caveman?
- 1:23:12No? No, no no, But I'm like, oh, can I
- 1:23:16get through eight days with seven kilograms of stuff? And yeah? And how
- 1:23:21diligent are they going to be when it comes to I'm just taking on this
- 1:23:24bag. Well it's seven and a half kilos. That's going to be nextra
- 1:23:27three hundred bucks. I'm like, oh, man, probably would be the
- 1:23:30case. So yeah, it's just a matter of like, well, I'm
- 1:23:33going to a hot climb and I'm probably not going to need that much clothing.
- 1:23:36So yeah, I'm pretty ready underwear nop, Yeah, minimal underwear,
- 1:23:43bare, minimum of socks and yeah, just a few shirts and like two
- 1:23:47pairs of pants. I want you to bring me back a bootleg copy of
- 1:23:51a twenty twenty three movie though, Okay, I'm looking a BCD of what
- 1:23:56John Wick four? Do they even do that anymore? I hope? So
- 1:24:00I think they must because I found went to the garage the other day I
- 1:24:01was cleaning about. I found a VCD two discs right of eight like at
- 1:24:05Freaks, Oh my gosh, fantastic spider movie. Is this a fantastic spider
- 1:24:13movie? You could do worse. That's arachnophobia. I don't like an hotmophobia
- 1:24:16because spiders got killed for the making of that movie. Okay, because is
- 1:24:20that what we seen getting run over in the cars and that? And I'm
- 1:24:23like, this is actual animals getting killed for the sake of my entertainment.
- 1:24:27Yeah, maybe it's been a wile since I've seen Arectophobia. I remember being
- 1:24:30good. I don't remember too many spiders dying in the line of duty,
- 1:24:32but unlike a milon otics correct, Yeah, how many milos and notices you
- 1:24:35think they went through? See I used to love that movie as a kid.
- 1:24:39And he'll read that story and you're like, ah, shit, that
- 1:24:41cat was actually just thrown off a cliff. Oh oh, that cat was
- 1:24:45just put in front of a bear and just see what happens. Oh shit,
- 1:24:50fun man, end the podcast. Fun but no, I'm pretty sure
- 1:24:59I unpacked, but I will be back in the near future. But in
- 1:25:01the MIDI you're gonna so the episode, maybe you can watch it while you're
- 1:25:04away. The episode you're going to be reviewing. So Revenge is the dispatch
- 1:25:08served three times. Next week is with Elliot Joy And I told him yesterday
- 1:25:11I like this one you're doing. Oh god, this is awas death.
- 1:25:15He was like, I'll review this one like twice already on his show and
- 1:25:18another show, and is like, do I have to do it again?
- 1:25:20I'm like, you don't have to, Like, I'll do it again.
- 1:25:24Take one for the team. Not all heroes wear capes. No, so

- 1:25:42of the one liners that she wrote for the episode was nothing it are sper
- 1:25:45sexy Flanders. What a legend. Yes, she's earned her place in history.
- 1:25:48Halloween of Horror, Yeah, mid Childhood Night's dream Like. She's just
- 1:25:53my favorite Simpsons writer of all time, and she's absolutely lovely. We speak
- 1:25:57for nearly ninety four minutes. If you ever listen to interview yet, make
- 1:25:59sure you do so. I'm quite proud of it because you know when you
- 1:26:01listen to some interviews and sometimes you listen to it and you're like, you
- 1:26:04just wish the interviewer would shut the fuck up. It's like they asked a
- 1:26:08question and you can tell the interviewee is like still in the train of thought.
- 1:26:12An interviewer tries to help them finish their sentence, like just let them
- 1:26:15finish, right. There's a good, like eight minutes in this where I
- 1:26:18don't say anything. I'm just kind of just like, oh yeah, I'm
- 1:26:21sort of like acknowledged, but I don't say anything, and it's just like
- 1:26:24I'm just letting her speak, and I'm like, it just shows go back
- 1:26:27to my first interviews that I did like fifteen years ago, and I'm so
- 1:26:30nervous and I'm constantly trying to like fill the gaps, and now it's just
- 1:26:31like ask a question and just let them speak. Automatic five stars for eight
- 1:26:36minutes of Dando silence. So check out that interview that's available right now on
- 1:26:44our feet as well. But thank you, guys for listening to our review
