- 0:02Speaker 1: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 0:05Speaker 1: the best youth football coverage.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Here's O.C.
- 0:08Speaker 3: From the Murdoch Hyundai.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Welcome back to The Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in Zach Moss,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Utah football legend, NFL veteran.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Zach, welcome to the show again. How are you, sir?
- 0:29Speaker 3: Doing good, doing good. Thank you guys for having me on.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Uh, what did you do with your, your bi-week Saturday
- 0:34Speaker 2: this past weekend?
- 0:35Speaker 3: Uh, not too much, not too much.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Just hung out at home and enjoy some quiet.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So team back in action this weekend, another night game
- 0:48Speaker 1: at rice cycle stadium against Kansas. And, uh, I guess
- 0:52Speaker 1: this applies to Kansas, but it applies to every team
- 0:54Speaker 1: right now in the You're either four games or five
- 1:00Speaker 1: games into your season here.
- 1:02Speaker 2: And, you know, I think.
- 1:04Speaker 1: For a lot of these teams, we kind of know
- 1:05Speaker 1: what to expect. We know what they are, but also
- 1:09Speaker 1: not because competition has been odd. You've played in Kansas's case,
- 1:13Speaker 1: a couple of like really non-factor teams, FCS team, middle
- 1:17Speaker 1: Tennessee state. You've lost the games against power four teams,
- 1:22Speaker 1: but you looked really, really good against middle Tennessee state.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I don't know if that is something we could translate
- 1:26Speaker 1: to Utah. So yeah, When you're watching film in a
- 1:29Speaker 1: week like this and you can only evaluate the sample
- 1:32Speaker 1: size of the four games that the Kansas Jayhawks have
- 1:35Speaker 1: played or that the Utes have played, how do you
- 1:38Speaker 1: know what is what that team really is and what
- 1:41Speaker 1: is kind of like an outlier?
- 1:44Speaker 5: Obviously, like you said, the schedule that they've played, they
- 1:51Speaker 5: haven't really truly had a outrageous schedule. So, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 5: but they look good in certain things that you kind
- 2:00Speaker 5: of want to see when you talk about the capabilities
- 2:04Speaker 5: that good teams have.
- 2:06Speaker 3: They've been able to show.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Those in different ways and win in different styles. I
- 2:12Speaker 5: think the Iowa State game was the biggest thing. because
- 2:16Speaker 5: Iowa State is a sneaky, weird team, as you kind
- 2:20Speaker 5: of saw, versus I think they played West Virginia, if
- 2:22Speaker 5: I'm not mistaken. And, you know, we bottled up their
- 2:25Speaker 5: running back extremely, extremely well, especially in the first half.
- 2:29Speaker 5: And then he went off to have just a spectacular game. So,
- 2:33Speaker 5: you know, when you see stuff like that, right, and
- 2:36Speaker 5: I think.
- 2:36Speaker 3: His name was Aiden something.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Aiden Flora, yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Yeah, and, you know, to see something like that and
- 2:45Speaker 5: the way that the youth had to respond in the
- 2:48Speaker 5: second half, right, obviously dominating the first half on both
- 2:51Speaker 5: sides of the ball, had some pushback going back and forth,
- 2:53Speaker 5: some adversity, and then to put the game away right
- 2:57Speaker 5: on the road, I think that's the biggest thing when
- 3:00Speaker 5: you talk about, you know, the schedule hasn't been anything
- 3:03Speaker 5: to really, really blink at, but at the same time,
- 3:05Speaker 5: they've won in different ways. They've won in different ways.
- 3:10Speaker 5: They've shown they can do that. And that's the type
- 3:12Speaker 5: of stuff you've got to see when you get into
- 3:14Speaker 5: the thick of the Big 12 conference play.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Coming back off a bye week, what's got to be
- 3:21Speaker 1: the main focus for a team that got to rest
- 3:24Speaker 1: up a little bit, got to lift a little bit
- 3:26Speaker 1: more maybe, put some muscle back on, eat good, rest good,
- 3:30Speaker 1: and now you're starting off your week with practices again
- 3:34Speaker 1: to get back into your routine. What's the biggest challenge
- 3:37Speaker 1: of getting back into that season routine after the bye
- 3:40Speaker 1: week breaks it?
- 3:43Speaker 5: I think the biggest thing is to, you know, the
- 3:46Speaker 5: conditioning is probably the hardest thing. Getting back, you know,
- 3:50Speaker 5: that's a long week off. Essentially, you know, obviously not
- 3:55Speaker 5: exactly sure on every single thing that they did up
- 3:58Speaker 5: there during the bye week. But, you know, from my
- 4:02Speaker 5: past and dealing with bye weeks, you know.
- 4:04Speaker 3: You still.
- 4:06Speaker 5: You know, practice a little bit on injuries and who's
- 4:10Speaker 5: banged up, who's not banged up, things like that. But,
- 4:13Speaker 5: you know, I think the main thing is to getting
- 4:16Speaker 5: back into that groove of things.
- 4:18Speaker 3: And they've been pretty groovy.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Offensively and defensively so far and continue to find that fire. But,
- 4:27Speaker 5: you know, definitely not worried about that because that's where,
- 4:29Speaker 5: you know, you talk about the coaching staff and things
- 4:32Speaker 5: of that nature and the strength staff and keeping these
- 4:35Speaker 5: guys ready to go, keeping them motivated mentally and physically. So,
- 4:38Speaker 5: you know, we really don't have a big issue coming
- 4:42Speaker 5: out of.
- 4:42Speaker 4: A bye week. So looking forward to that to continue
- 4:45Speaker 4: to be the same trend.
- 4:48Speaker 1: How do you, feel about momentum game to game week
- 4:52Speaker 1: to week obviously momentum exists in games right uh but
- 4:56Speaker 1: week to week do you believe are you a believer
- 4:58Speaker 1: in momentum in this case it would have been momentum
- 5:01Speaker 1: interrupted by a week off sometimes it's bad momentum you
- 5:05Speaker 1: want to stop with a week off but is there
- 5:08Speaker 1: even such a thing when you know your games are
- 5:10Speaker 1: separated by six or seven days.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Um, yeah.
- 5:16Speaker 5: I mean, you never know with momentum, it can swing, uh,
- 5:20Speaker 5: real fast. Um, you know, but I think that's the
- 5:23Speaker 5: part where it comes to the coaches, uh, you know,
- 5:27Speaker 5: how they structure practice during.
- 5:28Speaker 4: The bi-week, right?
- 5:29Speaker 5: It's not like these guys are taking an absolute, uh,
- 5:32Speaker 5: whole week off of just away from football right it's
- 5:35Speaker 5: not where they don't live they don't watch film um
- 5:39Speaker 5: you know and then i'm sure we have guys that
- 5:41Speaker 5: you know um are really dedicated to their crafts so
- 5:45Speaker 5: i i'm for sure that you know during the bye
- 5:48Speaker 5: week these guys are still getting together without the coaches
- 5:51Speaker 5: right and you know and trying to enjoy their time
- 5:54Speaker 5: off at the same time and get healthy, but just,
- 5:57Speaker 5: you know, doing the same things that they need to
- 5:59Speaker 5: do to continue to stay in that rhythm and stay
- 6:01Speaker 5: in that flow of all the things that have given
- 6:03Speaker 5: them the type of momentum that they've carried through the
- 6:06Speaker 5: first four weeks of playing. Because, you know, obviously this
- 6:09Speaker 5: Kansas team is going to come in and give them.
- 6:13Speaker 4: A fight for sure. And you can't start slow. um,
- 6:17Speaker 4: come up about a week.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Sometimes that's, that's a big issue with teams coming up
- 6:20Speaker 5: about a week. It's starting slow and we've started fast
- 6:22Speaker 5: offensively each and every week. So to your point about momentum, um,
- 6:26Speaker 5: definitely got to keep that momentum of starting fast, uh,
- 6:30Speaker 5: and has to show up this week again.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Speaking of starting fast, it's, it's been coming out of
- 6:37Speaker 1: the halftime break that this Utah team seems to slow
- 6:40Speaker 1: a little bit. They seem to fall asleep a little
- 6:42Speaker 1: bit at halftime. And I think that's part of human nature.
- 6:45Speaker 1: It's a little bit natural when especially you're carrying big
- 6:47Speaker 1: leads as they have in all of their first four
- 6:50Speaker 1: games this season. But the third quarter has been the
- 6:53Speaker 1: least productive quarter for this University of Utah football team,
- 6:57Speaker 1: both on the offensive side of the ball and on
- 6:59Speaker 1: the defensive side of the ball.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Ultimately, it doesn't matter because they're all wins.
- 7:03Speaker 1: But when you've got extra time to study film and
- 7:06Speaker 1: to self-scout during a bye week, it's maybe that's something
- 7:10Speaker 1: that you identify. And we've talked about this before, like,
- 7:13Speaker 1: all right, third quarter, how do you make sure that
- 7:15Speaker 1: your third quarter is just as good as your first
- 7:17Speaker 1: quarter if you're Zach Moss?
- 7:21Speaker 5: I think for me, it goes back to you know,
- 7:27Speaker 5: the way you structure practice, right? You know, obviously coming
- 7:30Speaker 5: off being in a bi-week week and being.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Early, you know, I wasn't, I kind.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Of sucked being in a bi-week coming off of week four, man, when,
- 7:39Speaker 5: you know, your body is just starting to, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 5: get used to playing football again after being months off.
- 7:46Speaker 5: But to me, it's all about practice, right? You practice
- 7:50Speaker 5: how you play. And, you know, the coaching staff is
- 7:53Speaker 5: putting these guys in the right, situations uh in practice
- 7:57Speaker 5: right because football is all about situations and that's one
- 8:00Speaker 5: thing i've learned is you know and been uh taught
- 8:03Speaker 5: over time is you know the pre masses of situation
- 8:07Speaker 5: um so you know put these guys in third down
- 8:09Speaker 5: situations in practice right make it as much as a
- 8:12Speaker 5: game um style format as much as you can so
- 8:15Speaker 5: that way when these guys get into the game and.
- 8:18Speaker 3: It's this third quarter these third.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Downs whatever it may be right um.
- 8:22Speaker 5: These situations arise it's It's not their first time, right,
- 8:26Speaker 5: on a Saturday night. Being in those situations, they practice
- 8:29Speaker 5: it all week, right? That's the reason when you go
- 8:32Speaker 5: to a practice, these things are scripted, right? These are
- 8:35Speaker 5: situations that the coaches feel are the most important, right?
- 8:40Speaker 5: You can have situations where you come out of the
- 8:41Speaker 5: halftime break, right? All these little different things that need
- 8:46Speaker 5: to show up, that do show up in game days.
- 8:49Speaker 5: It's all about the coaching staff putting the players in
- 8:51Speaker 5: the right place um, positions to be at their best.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Um, and you know, things of that nature.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Zach Moss is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell show,
- 9:02Speaker 1: Utah football legend, NFL veteran. And right now, uh, the
- 9:08Speaker 1: sideline reporter for the Utah radio broadcast that you could
- 9:10Speaker 1: listen to right here on ESPN, 700 and 92.
- 9:14Speaker 2: One FM, uh, whiteout uniform for a night game.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Zach Moss. It's backwards. It's usually blackout during the night game.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I feel a little superstitious about it. I'm not going
- 9:25Speaker 1: to try to curse anything, but how much did you
- 9:28Speaker 1: care about what uniform you were wearing, especially in college
- 9:31Speaker 1: where you got so many different combinations?
- 9:35Speaker 3: Honestly, I didn't care.
- 9:38Speaker 4: I feel like I pay much more attention to that stuff.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Now than I did in college. I think for one,
- 9:47Speaker 5: with Coach.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Witt and the guys that.
- 9:50Speaker 5: We had up there running the equipment room, things of
- 9:54Speaker 5: that nature, you know, it was a pretty– uh, status
- 9:57Speaker 5: quo kind of a thing, right?
- 9:58Speaker 4: You know, we had our certain games, right?
- 10:00Speaker 3: Night game is black.
- 10:01Speaker 4: And then if it's the, you know, the pride game, you, you.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Pride games and certain uniform for that.
- 10:07Speaker 4: And you go on the road, right. It's pretty much
- 10:10Speaker 4: only this, right. It's always almost white, um, on the road.
- 10:14Speaker 5: So, you know, it was, it was more of a,
- 10:17Speaker 5: almost like an NFL ran, uh, program essentially when it
- 10:20Speaker 5: came to the, uh, Right. One thing that's popped up
- 10:26Speaker 5: to me is, you know, how way Sean, I think
- 10:30Speaker 5: was last year. I don't think he's done it much
- 10:32Speaker 5: this year, but last year, you know, the pink cleats.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Right. You know, pretty much almost the whole rest of
- 10:39Speaker 4: the season. And, you know, that was great.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Kind of weird to me because you never really see
- 10:46Speaker 5: that much individualism, especially at Utah when being in the
- 10:51Speaker 5: Coach Willingham era and things of that nature, and you
- 10:53Speaker 5: look back all those years as well, you don't really
- 10:56Speaker 5: see that much individualism. individualism. But I love that, you know,
- 11:00Speaker 5: Coach Scali, you know, he's obviously he's an ex-player, ex-alum.
- 11:06Speaker 5: He's a lot closer in age, right? He's kind of
- 11:10Speaker 5: far off still, but closer than Coach Whitworth to what
- 11:14Speaker 5: the new age of football.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Essentially is, right?
- 11:17Speaker 5: You got to allow these guys to have, you know,
- 11:20Speaker 5: some type of, you know, input on what they're wearing,
- 11:23Speaker 5: what they want to wear, right?
- 11:24Speaker 3: And I think this is a direct.
- 11:28Speaker 4: calls of players, right? The leadership, right?
- 11:30Speaker 5: Giving the players leadership and, you know, changing some things up, right?
- 11:34Speaker 5: You know, the captains and things like that. And I'm sure,
- 11:37Speaker 5: you know, that comes directly from them with some stuff
- 11:41Speaker 5: from Coach Scali as well. So I'd like to see
- 11:44Speaker 5: things being different, right?
- 11:46Speaker 4: I love the night game with the all white out.
- 11:48Speaker 5: I think that's going to be just an absolute spectacular
- 11:51Speaker 5: view just for everybody inside of life cycles and people
- 11:55Speaker 5: watching it on TV as well. So, you know, I'm
- 11:59Speaker 5: super happy that, you know, these guys are having a
- 12:02Speaker 5: lot more input on certain things and, you know, who
- 12:05Speaker 5: knows what, I'm not sure if they're going to do
- 12:07Speaker 5: the hand painting helmets again this year, but who knows
- 12:10Speaker 5: if they do, what type of style we're going to
- 12:12Speaker 5: get from that as well.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Speaking of style, the coaching style that we're seeing Morgan Scali.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Now he's, he's five games into the bowl game last
- 12:21Speaker 1: year and first four games this season. Morgan as an
- 12:25Speaker 1: assistant coach was, you know, an animated type guy, kind
- 12:31Speaker 1: of loud, a little crazy at times, especially in practice,
- 12:35Speaker 1: not as much during games and things like that. But
- 12:38Speaker 1: I've noticed that he's borderline stoic on the sideline when
- 12:43Speaker 1: he's the head coach.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Right.
- 12:45Speaker 1: He's observing. He's quiet. He's conversational, it seems. And obviously
- 12:51Speaker 1: we don't have a camera on him all the time.
- 12:52Speaker 1: And I'm not looking at him all the time when
- 12:54Speaker 1: I'm watching the games in the stadium to see how
- 12:57Speaker 1: he's reacting to things. But he has a very calm
- 13:00Speaker 1: demeanor on the sideline. And he's an intense guy overall.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It's just like on game day, he's trusting that, you
- 13:07Speaker 1: know what, I've already put in the work. Let's just
- 13:09Speaker 1: see how this thing plays out. I'm a little surprised
- 13:11Speaker 1: by that, if I'm being honest, because I enjoy that. charismatic,
- 13:16Speaker 1: energetic approach from Morgan Scali. And I'm not saying it's
- 13:19Speaker 1: totally absent, but it's just not as noticeable. Have you
- 13:22Speaker 1: noticed anything about his demeanor on the sideline? And does
- 13:26Speaker 1: it maybe surprise you one way or the other?
- 13:30Speaker 3: Um, no.
- 13:33Speaker 5: I wouldn't say I'm surprised because I didn't really have
- 13:37Speaker 5: any expectations. I'm not a person that lives in an
- 13:41Speaker 5: expectation world. So I didn't really have any expectations on
- 13:46Speaker 5: how he would present himself on the sideline.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I think.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Personality obviously does matter. Like we all know, he's definitely
- 13:56Speaker 5: a lot more fiery in practice. He definitely has a
- 14:01Speaker 5: personality that will shock you.
- 14:05Speaker 4: If you don't know him and things of that nature
- 14:07Speaker 4: as well.
- 14:08Speaker 5: So to see him pretty stoic and kind of just really,
- 14:11Speaker 5: really super mild, honestly, to be on the sideline throughout
- 14:16Speaker 5: these first couple weeks. You know, it's been, I wouldn't
- 14:19Speaker 5: say weird, but it's it's like, oh, okay, you know,
- 14:24Speaker 5: he can have different personalities when they call for them, right?
- 14:28Speaker 5: But I think, you know, and I've talked about it
- 14:30Speaker 5: before on our pregame show with Bill and Sly, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 5: to me, I think that comes from the type of
- 14:39Speaker 5: trust that he has in his coaches that he's picked to,
- 14:43Speaker 5: you know, build this program with the vision that he
- 14:46Speaker 5: has as.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Well, right?
- 14:48Speaker 5: You know, he's not one of those guys that's going
- 14:51Speaker 5: to jump into, you know, the D.C.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Meeting as far as taking over the D.C. meeting, right?
- 14:56Speaker 3: He's not going to die.
- 14:56Speaker 5: He's going to come in and take over the office
- 14:58Speaker 5: of coordinators meeting, right? Special teams meeting, right? And you're
- 15:01Speaker 5: talking about a guy who played at this level and
- 15:02Speaker 5: played at the next level and things of that nature
- 15:05Speaker 5: as well. So I think some of that is just
- 15:08Speaker 5: him having full trust in the players and the coaches, right?
- 15:12Speaker 5: That gives the coaches who are calling these plays and
- 15:15Speaker 5: putting the players in position to just have, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 5: just the outright confidence that, you know, if there's an issue,
- 15:22Speaker 5: they mess up, right?
- 15:23Speaker 4: They're not going to have somebody breathing under their neck and.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Things of that nature.
- 15:26Speaker 5: So, you know, sometimes a lot of coaches, coordinators, they
- 15:29Speaker 5: don't get that type of privilege. And I think, you know,
- 15:32Speaker 5: just his... His demeanor on the sideline so far has
- 15:36Speaker 5: just been, in my opinion, from what I've seen, is
- 15:40Speaker 5: just that he has a ton of trust in these guys,
- 15:42Speaker 5: and these guys are doing an absolute great job. Obviously,
- 15:46Speaker 5: Coach Swan in his first year at the D.C. year,
- 15:48Speaker 5: Coach McGivins, who has a storied history himself and being
- 15:52Speaker 5: a play caller over the years.
- 15:55Speaker 4: But the first.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Time at Utah, he's giving these guys every key to
- 16:01Speaker 5: the doors right now.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Zach Moss for another minute or two here on the
- 16:06Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show talking all things Utah football and NFL football.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I want to touch on here with you.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Did you ever have crazy encounters with the referees at
- 16:15Speaker 1: any level of football? We saw a couple instances this
- 16:19Speaker 1: week from NFL referees where, you know, guy gets knocked over,
- 16:24Speaker 1: gets mad about it, gets up in somebody's face. Trey
- 16:27Speaker 1: McBride somehow upset a ref enough that the ref is mad.
- 16:31Speaker 1: telling them to bleep off or whatever. And it's kind
- 16:33Speaker 1: of crazy. It's kind of crazy to see that because
- 16:35Speaker 1: refs are usually like stonewall you, if anything, right?
- 16:39Speaker 2: They just don't talk.
- 16:40Speaker 1: But did you ever have a crazy encounter with a referee?
- 16:45Speaker 4: Surprisingly, no.
- 16:46Speaker 5: I didn't have a weird encounter with the referees in
- 16:53Speaker 5: my time. You know, honestly, every referee... Sometimes I was surprised.
- 17:00Speaker 4: They knew who I was.
- 17:01Speaker 5: And then, you know, sometimes you just had a decent
- 17:05Speaker 5: quick little, you know, witty comment, you know, joking manner
- 17:09Speaker 5: to the referees and things like that, because you always
- 17:11Speaker 5: want to be in the right place. Good favor as
- 17:14Speaker 5: many times as you can. But yeah, no, I never
- 17:17Speaker 5: had a, an encounter with them.
- 17:19Speaker 4: And that wasn't the negative way.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Speaker 0 7, we're seeing it in the NFL. We're
- 17:24Speaker 1: seeing it in college football with certain teams. especially a
- 17:28Speaker 1: team that has a bunch of former Utes and Ute
- 17:31Speaker 1: coaches on it right now. Can a team on a
- 17:35Speaker 1: consistent basis, like more than one or two games a year,
- 17:39Speaker 1: can you outplay bad quarterback production? Is there a way
- 17:44Speaker 1: that you could still be a good team without having
- 17:47Speaker 1: at least a quality quarterback, at least a decent quarterback?
- 17:50Speaker 1: But if your quarterback is turning the ball over, throwing
- 17:53Speaker 1: 50% completion, if your quarterback is actually below a certain standard,
- 17:57Speaker 1: Is there a way Zach Moss that a team can
- 18:00Speaker 1: truly overcome that?
- 18:03Speaker 5: In this, in this era of football, the modern era
- 18:07Speaker 5: of football, I don't, I don't think so. I think
- 18:09Speaker 5: because the game football is now so quarterback centric, a
- 18:13Speaker 5: lot more than it ever has been. You know, I
- 18:17Speaker 5: think just the other, I believe, yeah, yesterday, you know,
- 18:22Speaker 5: they put so.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Much onus on the quarterback.
- 18:24Speaker 5: You know, obviously I played in Buffalo and I saw
- 18:28Speaker 5: firsthand just how much onus was on Josh to go
- 18:31Speaker 5: out there and, you know, pretty much will us to
- 18:33Speaker 5: a win each and every week. And obviously the same
- 18:38Speaker 5: thing with Joe Burrow, who just threw, I want to say.
- 18:41Speaker 4: 58, 59 passes in a game yesterday. Right.
- 18:45Speaker 3: So I don't think you can, I think you can
- 18:48Speaker 3: be a good team.
- 18:49Speaker 5: I think, Look at the Minnesota Vikings right now, right?
- 18:53Speaker 5: They're a good team, right? In 4-0, they average 15
- 18:57Speaker 5: points per game. They've only scored six touchdowns in four
- 19:00Speaker 5: weeks and haven't scored a touchdown in 32 offensive drives.
- 19:04Speaker 5: So I think you could be a good team, but
- 19:08Speaker 5: when you talk about being a good team, are you
- 19:10Speaker 5: wanting to just be a good team or do you
- 19:11Speaker 5: want to be a team that can go.
- 19:14Speaker 3: To different places? That's being.
- 19:16Speaker 5: winning your division, being in that championship game, right, or
- 19:21Speaker 5: being in the Super Bowl or in the playoffs, in
- 19:25Speaker 5: that 12-spot playoffs, right, I don't think you can do
- 19:28Speaker 5: that when you're getting so far placed in the quarterback
- 19:31Speaker 5: in this era. You know, just because, you know, even
- 19:35Speaker 5: if you had a great running game, it'll be really
- 19:38Speaker 5: hard to do that week in and week out, week
- 19:41Speaker 5: in and week out without getting anything from a quarterback,
- 19:44Speaker 5: especially if.
- 19:45Speaker 4: You add in turnovers and things of that nature.
- 19:47Speaker 3: So, you know, my answer to that is no. be no.
- 19:50Speaker 3: I think it could be, well, my answer.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Is yes, to be a good team. But whatever your
- 19:56Speaker 5: definition of a good team is will then, you know,
- 20:03Speaker 5: make the answer a little bit more difficult.
- 20:08Speaker 1: And on that same vein, right, if you're a college
- 20:11Speaker 1: football player right now and knowing how the landscape has changed, right,
- 20:15Speaker 1: and a starting quarterback makes a bunch of money and
- 20:18Speaker 1: you as a starting running back, you're making some money too.
- 20:20Speaker 1: So you're professionals, but you've also got, it's all one-year contracts, right?
- 20:24Speaker 1: You've also got a transfer portal and things like that.
- 20:27Speaker 1: And you know that there's only certain windows of success,
- 20:30Speaker 1: especially for a college football team.
- 20:32Speaker 2: You can't really play the long game anymore. You're on
- 20:35Speaker 2: a team. Your quarterback's underperforming.
- 20:38Speaker 1: And you're, you know, the second or third or fourth
- 20:41Speaker 1: most important player on the team, aside from the quarterback.
- 20:43Speaker 1: And you're looking at that guy screwing up your opportunities here.
- 20:46Speaker 1: You still want to be a great teammate. You still
- 20:49Speaker 1: want to make sure that you're doing what's, you know,
- 20:51Speaker 1: in the best interest of everybody. But, I mean, is
- 20:54Speaker 1: there a role in which you as a player can
- 20:57Speaker 1: be like, man, we got to make a change here, coach, or.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Coach, when is this going to happen?
- 21:03Speaker 1: Because I mean, there are a few teams in college
- 21:05Speaker 1: football right now that are at that precipice that it
- 21:08Speaker 1: looks like they have some other things.
- 21:09Speaker 2: They've got a great defense.
- 21:11Speaker 1: There may be capable runners, but when the quarterback is
- 21:13Speaker 1: not playing well, you got to make a change at
- 21:16Speaker 1: some point. How is a player, especially an important player,
- 21:19Speaker 1: do you manage that with your teammate, with your coaches?
- 21:24Speaker 5: Um, I think for one, I think, uh, I think
- 21:28Speaker 5: I know one of the teams that you're talking about
- 21:30Speaker 5: that are having that issue right now.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Michigan, Michigan's got a bench Bryce Underwood at some point,
- 21:35Speaker 1: but he's on a $ 12 million deal.
- 21:37Speaker 4: Well, that's the issue when you bring in the NIO, right?
- 21:42Speaker 4: It becomes more of the professional level thing, right? You know,
- 21:45Speaker 4: obviously go back to the, 10 years, right, you know,
- 21:50Speaker 4: and then Bryce Underwood isn't performing well, he's benched without
- 21:53Speaker 4: even blinking an eye, right? It's already done. But now
- 21:56Speaker 4: that he's.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Making the type of money he's making, right, and the
- 21:58Speaker 3: people who are.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Paying him, right, you never want to see an investment, right,
- 22:03Speaker 5: not doing well, right, or sitting on the bench, right?
- 22:06Speaker 3: Because it's not doing you any favors, right?
- 22:08Speaker 5: That's like reinvesting in something And I put X amount
- 22:11Speaker 5: of dollars into it, and then I just pull.
- 22:13Speaker 4: My money out, and I take all the negative loss
- 22:16Speaker 4: on that, right?
- 22:17Speaker 3: It's the worst thing that you can do.
- 22:18Speaker 4: So, you know, in the coaching staff, and it happens all.
- 22:21Speaker 5: The time in the pro levels, which is why the
- 22:23Speaker 5: NIL stuff was always going to be a bit difficult
- 22:27Speaker 5: in the college level because it's so new, right?
- 22:29Speaker 4: And you're dealing with essentially kids that.
- 22:31Speaker 3: They have to– progress, right?
- 22:34Speaker 5: And you see it in the NFL right now. These
- 22:36Speaker 5: guys in the first round getting drafted, right? You're talking
- 22:38Speaker 5: $ 30 and $ 40 million in contract total money. And that's
- 22:42Speaker 5: not even money that essentially is on the caps. But still,
- 22:45Speaker 5: even if the guy like a CJ Shroud plays well,
- 22:48Speaker 5: essentially through the first three years, do you want to
- 22:50Speaker 5: extend them $ 50 million, right? Because a handicapped team is
- 22:55Speaker 5: They move on from you guys so fast.
- 22:57Speaker 3: J.J.
- 22:58Speaker 4: McCarthy, they move on from them so fast.
- 23:00Speaker 5: And that's because of the money. It's not because of
- 23:02Speaker 5: anything else, just the money. But as a player, and
- 23:06Speaker 5: you're on the team, and you're in that space, you
- 23:09Speaker 5: just have to believe... that the coaching staff is going
- 23:13Speaker 5: to figure it out. And that's their job. That's why
- 23:16Speaker 5: they get paid. You can't essentially, you know, it doesn't
- 23:20Speaker 5: matter where you're ranked as the player on the team, two, three, four,
- 23:23Speaker 5: in terms of importance, you can't go to your coaches
- 23:28Speaker 5: and pretty much you know, lobby for your quarterback to
- 23:32Speaker 5: be benched. You got to support them in every way
- 23:35Speaker 5: possible because, you know, at the end of the day,
- 23:38Speaker 5: you still got to do your job as well.
- 23:40Speaker 4: And if you can do, you.
- 23:41Speaker 5: Find a way to do your job even better, maybe
- 23:43Speaker 5: you might be able to help him out and things
- 23:45Speaker 5: of that nature. But it all comes down to just
- 23:47Speaker 5: having faith and trust that the coach staff will get
- 23:50Speaker 5: it right. Because like I said, it's a lot more,
- 23:52Speaker 5: things to why you hold on to a guy and
- 23:55Speaker 5: you let them play it out. Especially when you're making five, six, seven,
- 23:59Speaker 5: $ 8 million in one season in college.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I mean, it's, it's different than it used to be.
- 24:04Speaker 1: That's for sure. But I appreciate your insight on that.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I will see up there on Saturday night, Zach. Appreciate
- 24:09Speaker 1: your time.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Absolutely, my man. See you.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Zach Moss, Utah football legend, NFL running back. Now you
- 24:19Speaker 1: can hear him on the sidelines. as he works the
- 24:21Speaker 1: broadcast with the voice of the Utes, Bill Riley, Stevenson
- 24:25Speaker 1: Sylvester up in the booth, and Zach Moss on the sideline.
- 24:28Speaker 1: 8-15 kickoff, a whiteout Saturday night at Rice Eccles Stadium,
- 24:33Speaker 1: at least for the team.
