- 0:00Speaker 1: This roof has blown off the Seattle Kraken.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Welcome to Seattle Kraken Hockey on the Global Credit Union
- 0:07Speaker 2: Kraken Audio Network. Brought to you by Coors Light. Your
- 0:11Speaker 2: Western Washington Toyota dealers. Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. Muckleshoot Casino Resort.
- 0:17Speaker 2: By Liuna.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Symetra.
- 0:20Speaker 2: And by McDonald's.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Got him? Yeah.
- 0:36Speaker 1: In the blink of an eye training camp has come
- 0:38Speaker 1: and gone and the Seattle Kraken are ready to embark
- 0:41Speaker 1: on their sixth season in the National Hockey League. Last
- 0:45Speaker 1: year left a bitter taste in the mouths of everyone
- 0:47Speaker 1: in the organization and the offseason was met with self-reflection,
- 0:51Speaker 1: some reconciliation and an increased desire to get back to
- 0:55Speaker 1: where they were for the bulk of the 25-26 campaign.
- 0:59Speaker 1: competing for a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Tonight,
- 1:02Speaker 1: for the first time in team history, the Kraken kick
- 1:05Speaker 1: off an 84-game schedule in Calgary against the Flames on
- 1:09Speaker 1: what will be a historic and emotional night in Cowtown,
- 1:14Speaker 1: as tonight will serve as the 44th and final opening
- 1:18Speaker 1: night for the Scotiabank Saddledome. Good evening, everybody. Welcome back
- 1:22Speaker 1: to Seattle Kraken Hockey alongside Big Al Koniski. I am
- 1:26Speaker 1: Everett Fitzhugh. This is Seattle Kraken Hockey on the Global
- 1:29Speaker 1: Credit Union Kraken Audio Network.
- 1:31Speaker 5: You're listening to the.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Pregame show served up by Frost Brew Coors Light. Choose chill. Al,
- 1:35Speaker 1: year six for the Kraken. I know last year did
- 1:38Speaker 1: not end the way. that a lot of folks wanted.
- 1:41Speaker 1: But coming into the offseason, everyone knew where they went wrong,
- 1:45Speaker 1: what went wrong last year. And during camp, you could
- 1:48Speaker 1: see that hunger and that desire for this team to
- 1:52Speaker 1: right a lot of those wrongs that we saw at
- 1:54Speaker 1: the end of last year.
- 1:55Speaker 6: Yeah, as we talked to players and coaches as well
- 1:57Speaker 6: through camp and through the preseason, you got to sense
- 2:00Speaker 6: that there was a bit of the chip on the
- 2:02Speaker 6: shoulder mentality that they left something on the table after
- 2:05Speaker 6: the Olympic break. So this team really knows what they
- 2:08Speaker 6: need to do, how they need to play to get
- 2:10Speaker 6: into a playoff position. Now they just got to finish
- 2:13Speaker 6: that job through the break this year. So I think
- 2:15Speaker 6: they're coming into game one with that mentality.
- 2:17Speaker 1: The Kraken were battling for a playoff spot all season long.
- 2:20Speaker 1: They were not officially eliminated. from the playoffs until after
- 2:24Speaker 1: game 78 last season. So going into game 79, the
- 2:28Speaker 1: Seattle Kraken were still in that playoff spot, but it
- 2:32Speaker 1: was a rough end the last year. They were 5-15-2
- 2:35Speaker 1: over their last 22 games. Definitely something they can't afford
- 2:38Speaker 1: to have happen. But you move into a new season,
- 2:41Speaker 1: you've got some new captains, a couple of new faces
- 2:43Speaker 1: in Mackie Samuskevich. He unfortunately will start the season on
- 2:47Speaker 1: the IR. He is on the trip, so maybe we'll
- 2:49Speaker 1: see him Saturday in Edmonton. But A number of players
- 2:52Speaker 1: who are still here, the Jared McCanns, the Jordan Eberlees,
- 2:55Speaker 1: the Matty Beneers, they understand that a lot is going
- 2:58Speaker 1: to be put on their shoulders offensively this year.
- 3:00Speaker 6: Well, one of those guys that I mentioned about having
- 3:02Speaker 6: that chip on their shoulder is Matty Beneers. You could
- 3:05Speaker 6: hear it in some of his conversations today. You know,
- 3:07Speaker 6: they know there's a job that didn't get finished last year,
- 3:10Speaker 6: but you're right. This team is stacked with a lot
- 3:13Speaker 6: of the same names you saw get that team there
- 3:16Speaker 6: to the Olympic break last year, including on the blue line.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Dunn and Larson playing together again. Evans and Montour playing
- 3:23Speaker 6: together again. Both offensively-minded defensemen as your second pair. I'm
- 3:27Speaker 6: excited to see how those two go together.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Also going to get our first look at Big Curtis. Douglas, 6'9,
- 3:32Speaker 1: on the fourth line here tonight. Across the red line
- 3:35Speaker 1: tonight is going to be an emotional night here. as
- 3:37Speaker 1: every seat inside the Scotiabank Saddledome clad in red. It
- 3:41Speaker 1: is the final home opener after 43, now going into
- 3:46Speaker 1: 44 seasons. The Calgary Flames will move across the street
- 3:49Speaker 1: to a brand new Scotiabank place just about 150 feet
- 3:54Speaker 1: away across the street. But this is a Flames team.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Expectations internally are high for this team, just like they
- 4:01Speaker 1: are across the league. I think for them, it's going
- 4:04Speaker 1: to be a rebuilding year for Calgary. But still, they
- 4:06Speaker 1: can't afford to be taken lightly here tonight.
- 4:09Speaker 6: Yeah, we saw them a lot in preseason. It seems
- 4:11Speaker 6: odd that we're already back here again. But that's just
- 4:14Speaker 6: the way the schedule rolls out. But this top line
- 4:16Speaker 6: of Gritton, Frost, and Coronado, they're very deadly out there.
- 4:19Speaker 6: They've got the youngster on the defense, Zane Parekh. that,
- 4:22Speaker 6: you know, is up and coming. And as we saw
- 4:24Speaker 6: through those preseason games, a lot of good talent in
- 4:27Speaker 6: their pipeline.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Kraken will play this team four times between now and
- 4:31Speaker 1: the 4th of November, and then that will be it
- 4:33Speaker 1: unless these two teams find a way to meet in April.

- 7:58Speaker 11: Welcome to game one of 84. Your wait is finally over.
- 8:02Speaker 11: Mike Benton with you live back at Tom's Wash Bar.
- 8:04Speaker 11: Packing already here in Seattle as the Kraken gets set
- 8:08Speaker 11: to rebound from a season last year that had 34 wins.
- 8:11Speaker 11: Point total at 79, but finished out of the playoff picture. 15, 20,
- 8:15Speaker 11: and 6 was their road record. And they're facing a
- 8:18Speaker 11: Calgary team in their last season inside the Saddle Dome
- 8:21Speaker 11: where they were very good last year at 23, 13,
- 8:23Speaker 11: and 5. on home ice, but the Flames had a
- 8:27Speaker 11: rough year. 13 points out of the playoff picture at 34, 39,
- 8:31Speaker 11: and 9. Point total at 77. This game beginning a
- 8:36Speaker 11: two-game road swing on the crack inside where? They will
- 8:39Speaker 11: end Sunday with three games in four days with their
- 8:42Speaker 11: home opener. Off we go. The Kraken preseason didn't end
- 8:46Speaker 11: too badly as far as overall terms at 3-1. They
- 8:49Speaker 11: swept the table and ran it against Calgary, finishing also
- 8:53Speaker 11: 1-1 against Vancouver. But part of the conversation was, does
- 8:56Speaker 11: the Needlemore go toward calm or concern? The Kraken certainly
- 9:01Speaker 11: were winners in much of their games, but also two
- 9:04Speaker 11: games they played there with players largely now in the
- 9:07Speaker 11: American Hockey League and Last two games with an NHL roster,
- 9:11Speaker 11: the Kraken led that only for a combined total of
- 9:14Speaker 11: 33 minutes. and seven seconds. But as they say, it
- 9:17Speaker 11: is preseason after all, and the Kraken show plenty of
- 9:20Speaker 11: promise in several areas. Number one, the power play. Five
- 9:24Speaker 11: of 13 that far and away led the NHL for
- 9:27Speaker 11: preseason tune-ups. Brandon Montour looking pretty good out of the
- 9:30Speaker 11: gate so far. Three points in the preseason tie for
- 9:33Speaker 11: first on the Kraken with. Matty Beneers also had three
- 9:36Speaker 11: points in preseason play. Bobby McMahon, welcome back. Two goals
- 9:41Speaker 11: in his first two games plus. The goaltending duo, the
- 9:44Speaker 11: Kraken had to rely on them to be successful. Joey
- 9:47Speaker 11: Decord and Phillip Grubauer finishing with a combined 9-1-5 save percentage.
- 9:52Speaker 11: If preseason tells us anything, they certainly look ready. On
- 9:56Speaker 11: top of that, there was a toughness factor that we
- 9:58Speaker 11: also saw develop. Two games against Calgary at some points
- 10:01Speaker 11: turned ugly. The second matchup back here in Seattle had
- 10:05Speaker 11: a load of penalties plus four fighting majors, including a
- 10:08Speaker 11: fine after the game to defenseman Vili Adavainen for an
- 10:11Speaker 11: altercation with Brennan Othman. But yet you figure the team
- 10:15Speaker 11: passed a major toughness test in sticking up for each other,
- 10:19Speaker 11: so here we are with that a part of the story.
- 10:22Speaker 11: The roster is shaping up here for opening night with
- 10:24Speaker 11: 15 forwards, two of them on IR, Mackie Samaskevich and
- 10:28Speaker 11: Jake O'Brien, but you put Bobby McMahon here into the
- 10:30Speaker 11: fold of his contract extension. Mackie Samaskevich also via trade.
- 10:35Speaker 11: He won't play this evening as he is still nursing
- 10:37Speaker 11: an ailment for an upper body injury, but yet the
- 10:40Speaker 11: crack infusing potentially some offense that can help their totality
- 10:45Speaker 11: up front. Defensemen-wise, they have eight going here for this season,
- 10:49Speaker 11: including Audubon to begin this year. He will not play
- 10:52Speaker 11: in this evening's game, but also the goaltenders, no surprise
- 10:55Speaker 11: in Joey Decord and Phillip Grubauer helping spell a mostly
- 10:58Speaker 11: healthy group coming out of the preseason. That's what they
- 11:01Speaker 11: could essentially ask for where they're building on team core
- 11:04Speaker 11: values of speed, relentlessness, grit, and also a balanced set
- 11:09Speaker 11: of four lines. The big question with that is who
- 11:11Speaker 11: takes the reins here as top scorer and who takes
- 11:14Speaker 11: the next step as a young player? Can Matty Beneers
- 11:17Speaker 11: maybe get to 20 or 25 or 30 goals? Can
- 11:19Speaker 11: Berkley Catton hit 20 goals as well? Can Mackie Samaskevich
- 11:23Speaker 11: reach new heights here in his first season with the
- 11:25Speaker 11: Kraken once he's able to come out of the mothballs?
- 11:27Speaker 11: And perhaps can Shane Wright also find a rebound season
- 11:31Speaker 11: after what was an offseason spent? a ton within the
- 11:35Speaker 11: news cycle. That leads us here to our first matchup
- 11:38Speaker 11: of four for the Kraken and the Flames. The Kraken
- 11:40Speaker 11: going to face Calgary twice, matter of fact, here in
- 11:43Speaker 11: the next four days, which also includes a home opener
- 11:46Speaker 11: right back across the street from us. That will be
- 11:48Speaker 11: Sunday at 5 p.m. at Climate Pledge Arena. Certainly mark
- 11:52Speaker 11: your calendars for that. But the funny part here for
- 11:55Speaker 11: the schedule, All four matchups will be done by November 4th,
- 11:59Speaker 11: so these two teams will be seeing plenty of each other.
- 12:03Speaker 11: The Kraken 7-9-2, all-time mark against Calgary. Last season won
- 12:07Speaker 11: two out of three, and this evening, one of two
- 12:11Speaker 11: times left. They'll see the Saddledome, and it will be
- 12:13Speaker 11: gone after this season, where, as Everett mentioned, the Flames
- 12:16Speaker 11: moving across the street to the brand-new Scotia Place opening night.
- 12:21Speaker 11: this next year. Cracking story lines here to begin the season.
- 12:24Speaker 11: First off, start with Matty Beneers making his NHL debut
- 12:27Speaker 11: in that building in Calgary back on April 12th of 2022.
- 12:31Speaker 11: And the question bears, can he take the next step
- 12:34Speaker 11: this season? Last year, 50-point campaign. That was this most
- 12:38Speaker 11: since this Calder Trophy season back in 2022-23. And tonight,
- 12:42Speaker 11: he'll be a part of their top line. at the
- 12:44Speaker 11: 1C spot in between Jared McCann and Kapo Kako. Preseason-wise,
- 12:49Speaker 11: before Mackie Samuskevich got hurt, he was on that line,
- 12:53Speaker 11: but after he got hurt, Kako moved up, so we'll
- 12:55Speaker 11: see how long. This line stays intact until Samuskevich is
- 13:00Speaker 11: all set to come back. Secondly, can this finally be
- 13:03Speaker 11: the right kind of an open and shut case on
- 13:05Speaker 11: the road? The Kraken searching for their first win ever
- 13:08Speaker 11: in a season opening game for a road environment. Last year,
- 13:13Speaker 11: they won their season opener. That was on home ice, though.
- 13:16Speaker 11: They beat Anaheim 3-1. And the last time doing this
- 13:19Speaker 11: on the road, they lost in Vegas. 2023-24 was that campaign,
- 13:24Speaker 11: losing 4-1. All time right now, their road record to
- 13:26Speaker 11: begin the season, 0-2-1. Our third and final storyline, could
- 13:31Speaker 11: there be fireworks here in this game? This stems from
- 13:35Speaker 11: the two preseason games, the Kraken and Flamesaw, where it
- 13:38Speaker 11: got emotional, it got physical, it got nasty. Maybe a
- 13:42Speaker 11: breadcrumb here for this. The fourth line will feature Curtis Douglas,
- 13:46Speaker 11: a 6'9 enforcer, and Jacob Alonso as well. Those two
- 13:49Speaker 11: playing on the wings. with Freddie Gaudreau, and the last
- 13:52Speaker 11: time that Douglas suited up, that was in the preseason
- 13:54Speaker 11: against the Flames. He was involved in the scrum at
- 13:58Speaker 11: 7.22 of the second period, where he was given a
- 14:00Speaker 11: roughing penalty and also a game misconduct. And for you
- 14:04Speaker 11: to take note, Calgary suiting up, a name familiar here
- 14:07Speaker 11: to these parts, and Martin Pospisil, he will get fourth-line
- 14:11Speaker 11: duty here in this contest. Let's hear more from the Kraken,
- 14:15Speaker 11: and Captain Jordan Eberle right here, who admitted the team's
- 14:17Speaker 11: got a chip on their shoulder. after what happened last season.
- 14:21Speaker 12: You know, guys are having fun here. I think they
- 14:23Speaker 12: enjoy playing for one another. That's an important piece. Having
- 14:27Speaker 12: everyone connected and, you know, just the compete that we've had, too.
- 14:31Speaker 12: Those are some common words that we've used in this
- 14:33Speaker 12: restroom for a while this year. And, you know, it
- 14:36Speaker 12: just feels like a good energy. I think the guys
- 14:38Speaker 12: want to prove people wrong. The way that the season
- 14:41Speaker 12: finished last year, I think it left a bad taste
- 14:42Speaker 12: in everyone's mouth. And, you know, I can just feel
- 14:45Speaker 12: the anxiousness and the excitement and, you know, you know,
- 14:50Speaker 12: the raring to go. And I think that's all, those
- 14:52Speaker 12: are all positive things to have in the season. We
- 14:53Speaker 12: have a plan and, you know, if there's going to
- 14:55Speaker 12: be highs, there's going to be lows throughout the season.
- 14:57Speaker 12: I think that's pretty common. I've played quite a few
- 14:59Speaker 12: years and that's always a perfect season. So, you know,
- 15:03Speaker 12: we just got to ride with each other and, you know,
- 15:06Speaker 12: stick together.
- 15:08Speaker 11: As Matty Beneers got set for opening day, he outlined
- 15:10Speaker 11: the goal in clear terms here for the Kraken this season.
- 15:14Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, it's super important to be in the
- 15:16Speaker 9: hunt the whole year and give yourself a chance to
- 15:18Speaker 9: make the playoffs. the most fun hockey I've ever played
- 15:22Speaker 9: was in playoffs. So I know I want to get
- 15:25Speaker 9: back there. I know every guy in here does. And
- 15:26Speaker 9: I think the young guys got a taste of what
- 15:28Speaker 9: it's like to not make it last year. So now
- 15:30Speaker 9: they know how that feels and how we want to
- 15:33Speaker 9: change that.
- 15:35Speaker 11: Riker Evans is a storyline here for this one because
- 15:37Speaker 11: he grew up in Calgary, matter of fact, skated as
- 15:40Speaker 11: a youth hockey player.
- 15:41Speaker 6: In the Saddledome.
- 15:42Speaker 11: And he said the memories in that building will last
- 15:44Speaker 11: forever and being a part of the Saddledome.
- 15:47Speaker 6: Pretty cool.
- 15:49Speaker 11: Growing up, this is the only barn you really know of.
- 15:53Speaker 12: And then coming out and skating as a kid and
- 15:55Speaker 12: the intermissions and stuff, I mean, it's pretty cool to
- 15:58Speaker 12: be the last home opener in this barn.
- 16:00Speaker 11: It'll certainly be an emotional one for him. And earlier
- 16:03Speaker 11: this week on Kraken Weekly, we had a season preview
- 16:05Speaker 11: for a team that is certainly young but with a
- 16:08Speaker 11: ton of ambition. So how did preseason set the tone?
- 16:11Speaker 11: Here's our chat with Kraken GM Jason Botterill.
- 16:14Speaker 13: You know, it's been a very quick training camp with
- 16:17Speaker 13: it being shorter here. with only four games this year.
- 16:20Speaker 13: I think we've loved the mentality of our players. So
- 16:23Speaker 13: many of them came back to Pacific Northwest early, getting
- 16:27Speaker 13: situated here, working with our strength and conditioning staff. And
- 16:31Speaker 13: I think Lane has mentioned it in some of his media.
- 16:34Speaker 13: I think he's been really impressed with the compete level
- 16:36Speaker 13: and battle level we've had in practice throughout the training camp.
- 16:39Speaker 13: But we all want to play games. We want to
- 16:41Speaker 13: be a part of it. So excited to get things going.
- 16:43Speaker 11: You mentioned culture as a word at the end of
- 16:45Speaker 11: last year, which has got a lot of meaning. So
- 16:47Speaker 11: What does it look like here for the veterans in
- 16:49Speaker 11: this room, the kind of coach you have, and the
- 16:51Speaker 11: kind of core values that they need to really drive
- 16:54Speaker 11: this bus here from the outset?
- 16:56Speaker 13: Well, I think Lane has touched on it, right? It's
- 16:58Speaker 13: what our players like about Lane. There's a directness with Lane.
- 17:01Speaker 13: He's very competitive. He's open to different ideas. But when
- 17:05Speaker 13: he talks to players, it's very truthful. And I think
- 17:08Speaker 13: what we're excited about the group is in our conversations
- 17:11Speaker 13: with them over the summer, different ways from interacting with
- 17:15Speaker 13: our leadership group, different things we've done with them to
- 17:17Speaker 13: improving that group there. They've been open to trying to improve.
- 17:21Speaker 13: They try to improve their game on the ice. They
- 17:23Speaker 13: try to improve themselves off the ice. The organization worked,
- 17:27Speaker 13: I think, put a lot of things in place through
- 17:29Speaker 13: our sports performance department, our medical department, player development department.
- 17:35Speaker 13: And to our credit, to our players, they utilize those tools.
- 17:38Speaker 13: And they've come back stronger wanting to make sure that
- 17:42Speaker 13: they learn from the mistakes from last year, the disappointment
- 17:45Speaker 13: of last year, and come and improve our organization, improve
- 17:48Speaker 13: our team. And the fact that, like I touched on,
- 17:51Speaker 13: we had some young players in Seattle at the start
- 17:53Speaker 13: of August. We had a lot of veteran players, middle
- 17:56Speaker 13: of August, late August, coming in there. And with the
- 17:58Speaker 13: shorter camp, that cohesiveness, that drive, I think just shows
- 18:02Speaker 13: their dedication to the organization.
- 18:05Speaker 11: SGM Jason Botterill, more of that chat, by the way,
- 18:07Speaker 11: available via the Kraken Audio Network on the iHeartRadio app.

- 20:24Speaker 11: you by the Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling and your

- 20:50Speaker 11: Kraken pregame is served up by Frostbrood Coors Light Shoes Chill. Again,
- 20:54Speaker 11: Mike Benton with you back at Tom's Watch Bar. And
- 20:56Speaker 11: time now for a look at Calgary, where it will
- 20:59Speaker 11: be very emotional in their last ever home opener inside
- 21:03Speaker 11: Scotiabank Saddle Dome. And here's Flames head coach Ryan Hushka
- 21:07Speaker 11: on if the Flames could let the emotions of one
- 21:09Speaker 11: final season opener in the Dome take over tonight.
- 21:13Speaker 5: I think it's something that's going to be, um, talked about,
- 21:16Speaker 5: reflected upon every game we play in here this year.
- 21:18Speaker 5: And I think that's a great thing. I mean, this
- 21:20Speaker 5: building has some great history in it and for our
- 21:23Speaker 5: players and our staff to be a part of the
- 21:24Speaker 5: final season here, I think it's something that we all
- 21:27Speaker 5: feel pretty fortunate about. One of the coaches made note
- 21:30Speaker 5: of the red all around the building with the shirts
- 21:33Speaker 5: that are all out there right now. And they were
- 21:35Speaker 5: wondering if in the new building, the seats are going
- 21:36Speaker 5: to be red because it looks unreal right now. Um,
- 21:40Speaker 5: There's going to be great energy all season long in
- 21:42Speaker 5: this building, and we know that, and we're going to
- 21:46Speaker 5: play accordingly.
- 21:48Speaker 11: It will be their 44th and final season inside the
- 21:50Speaker 11: Dome for a largely young group, many predicting could be
- 21:54Speaker 11: a lottery team. Last year, worst offense in the NHL,
- 21:56Speaker 11: 2.5 goals per game, tied for 21st defensively at 3.12.
- 22:02Speaker 11: This will also open up, by the way, three games in,
- 22:06Speaker 11: in four days on their side. Also, with Captain Michael
- 22:10Speaker 11: Backlund taking over once again as the headliner on their
- 22:12Speaker 11: roster at age 37. By the way, man, his NHL
- 22:16Speaker 11: debut January 8, 2009. They have two players on the roster,
- 22:19Speaker 11: Matt Vaigreden and Zane Parekh, who are age two when
- 22:23Speaker 11: that happened. That's why the age gap is. Flame storylines
- 22:26Speaker 11: first on number one, the debut of Jacob Middleton. He
- 22:29Speaker 11: came over via trade back on July 6 with three
- 22:31Speaker 11: draft picks. For Blake Coleman and Ole Mata from Minnesota,
- 22:36Speaker 11: he is a rugged, stay-at-home defenseman, and he'll play with
- 22:38Speaker 11: Zane Parek, a young right-shot defenseman with a young and
- 22:41Speaker 11: promising game. And secondly, it is containing their top line
- 22:45Speaker 11: of Matt Vaigreden, Morgan Frost, and Matt Coronado. Frost last season,
- 22:49Speaker 11: 22 goals, career high for him at age 27. By
- 22:52Speaker 11: the way, Dustin Wolfe will be in net, former Everest
- 22:55Speaker 11: Silver Tips star, entering his third full NHL season. Kraken
- 22:58Speaker 11: right now against him.
- 22:59Speaker 6: He's at 2-1-1.
- 23:01Speaker 11: In four career games with an 8-8-8, say, percentage. All right,
- 23:05Speaker 11: Kraken fans, listen all game long for your chance to
- 23:07Speaker 11: win tickets to an upcoming Kraken game, and pay attention
- 23:10Speaker 11: to Everett's play of the game during the game as well.
- 23:12Speaker 11: And when I call for the play of the game
- 23:13Speaker 11: during postgame, call 206-286-9595. If you're caller number seven with
- 23:19Speaker 11: the right play of the game, you score a pair
- 23:21Speaker 11: of tickets to an upcoming Kraken game, so don't miss
- 23:24Speaker 11: your shot. Listen, call.
- 23:26Speaker 6: And win.
- 23:27Speaker 11: Everett and Nell, have your three keys after this. You're
- 23:29Speaker 11: listening to the Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network.

- 25:33Speaker 11: This is Shane Wright, centerman for the Seattle Kraken.
- 25:35Speaker 8: Now back to Seattle Kraken Hockey on the Kraken Audio Network.
- 25:39Speaker 1: We're back here in Calgary. Game one of 84, partner.
- 25:43Speaker 1: First time in 30 years the National Hockey League will
- 25:47Speaker 1: be moving to an 84 game schedule uh two extra
- 25:51Speaker 1: games in division so two more games that will mean
- 25:54Speaker 1: a lot more as a result the nhl took two
- 25:57Speaker 1: games off of the preseason so now the kraken played
- 26:01Speaker 1: four games in the preseason they'll play 84 in the
- 26:03Speaker 1: regular season same overall amount of games but just two
- 26:07Speaker 1: more that matter this is the final home opener in
- 26:10Speaker 1: the history of the Saddle Dome here in Seattle, built
- 26:14Speaker 1: back in, or Calgary, rather, built back in 1983. One
- 26:17Speaker 1: of my favorite buildings. It's such a classic old building,
- 26:21Speaker 1: and I love it so much. It's going to be
- 26:22Speaker 1: sad not to play here after this year. But the
- 26:25Speaker 1: Kraken are hoping to send the Flames home sad. They
- 26:28Speaker 1: want to douse the Flames, partner. How can they get
- 26:31Speaker 1: it done in game one of year six?
- 26:34Speaker 6: Well, the first key of the game in game one is...
- 26:38Speaker 6: It is game one, not game 84, not a three-day
- 26:41Speaker 6: all-you-can-eat Golden Corral buffet. The Kraken need to bring the
- 26:44Speaker 6: same energy, urgency, and attention to detail from the opening
- 26:47Speaker 6: puck drop to the final horn. No disappearing acts, no
- 26:51Speaker 6: defensive brain cramps, and absolutely no taking a vacation in
- 26:55Speaker 6: the middle of a shift. Consistency is the difference between
- 26:58Speaker 6: being on an aired-out, trimmed-up hydroplane on Lake Washington and
- 27:02Speaker 6: a derelict ghost ship lost at sea. Secondly, battle every shift.
- 27:08Speaker 6: Welcome to Cowtown, where the Flames would love nothing more
- 27:10Speaker 6: than to turn this stampede and make the Kraken ride
- 27:13Speaker 6: the proverbial bull for 60 minutes. Seattle needs to win
- 27:16Speaker 6: the puck battles, finish checks, and make every inch of
- 27:19Speaker 6: ice feel like a hostile takeover. Nobody gets a free pass,
- 27:23Speaker 6: nobody gets a participation trophy, and nobody should be lost
- 27:26Speaker 6: in the shuffle. If Calgary wants a street fight, the
- 27:29Speaker 6: Kraken better bring their nunchucks. Third, play your game. The
- 27:35Speaker 6: Flames will undoubtedly try to light a fire under Seattle,
- 27:37Speaker 6: but the Kraken can't afford to get burned chasing somebody
- 27:40Speaker 6: else's game plan. Move the puck, skate with purpose, and
- 27:43Speaker 6: get traffic in front of Dustin Wolfe and make him
- 27:45Speaker 6: earn every penny of his paycheck. Don't turn this into
- 27:48Speaker 6: a track meet, a demolition derby, or an impromptu game
- 27:51Speaker 6: of pinball. Stick to the blueprint. Dictate the pace and
- 27:54Speaker 6: make the Flames play 60 minutes of Kraken hockey instead
- 27:57Speaker 6: of a Calgary highlight reel.
- 27:59Speaker 4: So in sum.
- 28:00Speaker 6: The Kraken are here for the final home opener in
- 28:02Speaker 6: the Saddle Dome, and it's time to see if they
- 28:04Speaker 6: brought their hockey sticks or their selfie sticks. Consistency, relentless battles,
- 28:09Speaker 6: and sticking to their identity are the ingredients for keeping
- 28:11Speaker 6: the Flames from turning opening night into a Calgary barbecue.
- 28:15Speaker 6: Bring the heat, but don't get cooked. Play 60 minutes
- 28:18Speaker 6: of Kraken hockey, or Calgary could send Seattle home looking
- 28:21Speaker 6: like they just got bucked off the saddle.
- 28:24Speaker 1: What's your record on the Bull?
- 28:26Speaker 11: You know what?
- 28:27Speaker 1: I know you've done it.
- 28:28Speaker 6: I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I haven't.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Come on. You've never ridden a bull.
- 28:33Speaker 6: There's no bull in Coquitlam. There's no bull in Seattle. Well,
- 28:37Speaker 6: if there is, I don't know where there is. We've
- 28:39Speaker 6: got to get out to a bull here in Calgary
- 28:41Speaker 6: one of these times.
- 28:41Speaker 1: We've got to find a bull. So these two teams,
- 28:43Speaker 1: Kraken and Seattle, they had some good battles in preseason,
- 28:47Speaker 1: albeit preseason. A couple of games in which Sam Iskevich
- 28:50Speaker 1: got injured in one of them, and you saw the
- 28:52Speaker 1: team toughness. We talked a lot about that. During preseason,
- 28:55Speaker 1: that team toughness. Do you expect any of the rough
- 28:57Speaker 1: stuff to carry over here from preseason? Or is it
- 29:01Speaker 1: just that? Hey, it was preseason. There was a bunch
- 29:03Speaker 1: of guys who were trying to make the rosters. But
- 29:06Speaker 1: now we can't afford to go out there and potentially
- 29:09Speaker 1: give up two points.
- 29:09Speaker 6: Well, listen, some of those guys involved in those games
- 29:12Speaker 6: are on the bench tonight on both teams. Most are not.
- 29:15Speaker 6: But I guarantee you they all saw it.
- 29:17Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 29:17Speaker 6: They all saw it, and they've all been in games
- 29:19Speaker 6: in the past where there's been a little extracurricular activity.
- 29:22Speaker 6: So I think it does feed into the game a
- 29:25Speaker 6: little bit. I don't think it gets quite as out
- 29:27Speaker 6: of hand as the preseason game goes because this game matters.
- 29:30Speaker 6: This game is for two points, and you don't want
- 29:32Speaker 6: to put your team down in a penalty kill situation
- 29:35Speaker 6: just because you got into something you shouldn't have.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Mike talked a little bit about it earlier in the
- 29:39Speaker 1: pregame show, sir, up by Frostbrook Coors Light about the
- 29:42Speaker 1: responsibility that the Matty Beneers, the Jordan Eberlees, the Jared McCanns,
- 29:46Speaker 1: those guys have to take on this season. And when
- 29:49Speaker 1: you don't have maybe as robust of an offseason as
- 29:52Speaker 1: maybe folks would have liked, You need to look internally.
- 29:56Speaker 1: What do you expect? What are you expecting out of
- 29:58Speaker 1: those leaders, both with letters on their jersey, literal leaders,
- 30:02Speaker 1: but also for them to perform in the offense as
- 30:04Speaker 1: part of the game as well?
- 30:05Speaker 6: Well, I think it's about setting the pace and setting
- 30:07Speaker 6: the pace is something that you can do individually, but
- 30:10Speaker 6: only so much. You've got to encourage others to join
- 30:13Speaker 6: you in setting that pace. And that's part of that
- 30:15Speaker 6: leadership mentality. It's got to happen on the offensive side
- 30:18Speaker 6: of the ice as well as the defensive side. So
- 30:20Speaker 6: that's why you have guys with letters on their jerseys
- 30:22Speaker 6: on both sides. You've got to lead that charge offensively.
- 30:25Speaker 6: You've got to lead that charge in the dressing room.
- 30:27Speaker 6: You've got to lead that charge if you go down
- 30:29Speaker 6: 1-0 here in the first period. So that leadership has
- 30:32Speaker 6: to come out in different ways. You'd like not to
- 30:34Speaker 6: necessarily need it by going down, but it's going to happen.
- 30:37Speaker 6: And when it does, that's who you look to to
- 30:39Speaker 6: get things turned around.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Speaking of.
- 30:41Speaker 6: Setting the pace.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Speaking of leading the charge, you know who is more
- 30:47Speaker 1: fired up than anyone to lead us into season six?
- 30:51Speaker 1: Mike Benton! Mike Benton back at Tom's Watch Bar. He's
- 30:54Speaker 1: standing by. He's got more for you. Your Corsi pregame

- 31:08Speaker 4: your crew's hyped, and the energy's electric. But if betting's
- 31:11Speaker 4: got you calling audibles off the field, if your budget's
- 31:14Speaker 4: getting blitzed and your peace of mind's in the injured reserve,

- 33:30Speaker 11: Decord in net for the Kraken opposing Dustin Wolfe as
- 33:32Speaker 11: far as who else will be out for the first shift.
- 33:34Speaker 11: We'll get that your way very soon as the Kraken
- 33:37Speaker 11: and Flames coming up. Again, Mike Benton with you back
- 33:39Speaker 11: live at Tom's Wash Bar in Seattle. And for now,
- 33:41Speaker 11: back to Calgary we go where Lane Lambert is standing
- 33:44Speaker 11: by with Everett Fitzhugh.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Thanks, Mike. Lane, I know we've talked to you quite
- 33:51Speaker 1: a bit throughout the training camp, but this is our
- 33:53Speaker 1: first official conversation with you. So welcome back. I know
- 33:57Speaker 1: obviously last year didn't end and go the way that
- 34:00Speaker 1: we all wanted it to go, but the summer does
- 34:02Speaker 1: bring some time for rest and reflection. Did you have
- 34:05Speaker 1: a good summer? Were you able to decompress at all?
- 34:08Speaker 1: I know you hockey guys are always on, but did
- 34:10Speaker 1: you at least do something fun this summer?
- 34:13Speaker 20: Well, you know what? We had a long summer, so
- 34:16Speaker 20: it took a while to get over the stink um
- 34:21Speaker 20: you know are you ever fully over it probably not
- 34:22Speaker 20: but at the end of the day we have to
- 34:24Speaker 20: turn the page it's a fresh start and uh you
- 34:27Speaker 20: know summer for me was about you know decompressing spending
- 34:30Speaker 20: time with my wife and kids uh playing a little
- 34:33Speaker 20: golf so uh you know all those boxes.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Were checked after year one here for you for seattle
- 34:39Speaker 1: what did you learn about yourself as a coach and
- 34:42Speaker 1: and and what are those lessons that you took into
- 34:44Speaker 1: the summer and then ultimately here in the training camp.
- 34:47Speaker 20: Ah You know, you do a lot of self-reflection. Of
- 34:51Speaker 20: course you do. You know, and there's certain areas, I guess,
- 34:55Speaker 20: you know, that I look and say, okay, maybe I
- 34:57Speaker 20: could have done this a little bit different. Maybe I
- 34:58Speaker 20: could have done that a little bit different. And there's
- 35:00Speaker 20: a lot of things where you're saying, okay, hey, wouldn't
- 35:03Speaker 20: change a thing, you know. We beat a lot of
- 35:06Speaker 20: teams last year, beat a lot of top teams last year.
- 35:09Speaker 20: We're in the playoffs for a long, long time. And,
- 35:12Speaker 20: you know, we have to have a level of consistency
- 35:14Speaker 20: this year. that goes for a complete 84 games. We
- 35:18Speaker 20: fell off, obviously, at the end, you know, and we're
- 35:22Speaker 20: looking to have that consistency.
- 35:24Speaker 1: It was a short training camp, shorter than I think
- 35:26Speaker 1: a lot of us were used to. What have you
- 35:28Speaker 1: learned about your team in the last two and a
- 35:30Speaker 1: half weeks? We got a good look at the younger players.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Now the vets, the core, the folks that you're used
- 35:35Speaker 1: to seeing night in, night out, are going to have
- 35:37Speaker 1: a chance to start this season. What have you learned
- 35:40Speaker 1: about your team these last couple weeks?
- 35:42Speaker 20: Well, I think that there's a real motivation and a
- 35:49Speaker 20: commitment to getting ready for the season. I thought our guys,
- 35:54Speaker 20: starting with our older players, encouraged everybody to get back early.
- 35:58Speaker 20: A lot of guys were back by pretty much mid-August,
- 36:01Speaker 20: skating together in preparation for this short training camp, and
- 36:08Speaker 20: I think that that stems from the way the season finished,
- 36:12Speaker 20: and how upset everybody was by that. Certainly there isn't
- 36:18Speaker 20: anybody around that is more upset than people inside that
- 36:23Speaker 20: locker room. So I do believe that from our standpoint,
- 36:30Speaker 20: if you look at the outside noise, which you don't
- 36:33Speaker 20: listen to, it appears we have some stuff to prove
- 36:37Speaker 20: to people, and I think our guys are ready for
- 36:41Speaker 20: that challenge.
- 36:41Speaker 1: With the older guys leading the charge of coming back early,
- 36:44Speaker 1: and then you look at your group, the leadership group
- 36:48Speaker 1: that we have coming into the season, what does that
- 36:50Speaker 1: say about the culture of this team?
- 36:51Speaker 20: Well, you know what? It's an ongoing process for sure.
- 36:57Speaker 20: Every team, every year, continues to work on developing a culture,
- 37:03Speaker 20: especially a team that's been in existence for five years.
- 37:07Speaker 20: There's been A decent amount of turnover when you look
- 37:10Speaker 20: at a first-year team and even a second-year team that's
- 37:14Speaker 20: basically made up all the vets. There wasn't any young kids,
- 37:17Speaker 20: there wasn't any real draft prospects at that particular time
- 37:21Speaker 20: because the youth in the organization was non-existent for the
- 37:25Speaker 20: most part in year one and a little bit in
- 37:27Speaker 20: year two. as people are moved out and as people
- 37:33Speaker 20: are moved in and you have signings, you know, free
- 37:36Speaker 20: agent signings and, you know, you've got your Montours and
- 37:38Speaker 20: your Stephensons, guys like that, you know, the dynamic of
- 37:42Speaker 20: the team changes and you have to continue to work
- 37:45Speaker 20: on culture and that's what we spend a lot of
- 37:47Speaker 20: time working on this summer as a leadership group and
- 37:49Speaker 20: as a coaching staff.
- 37:51Speaker 1: We all set goals for ourselves individually, collectively going into
- 37:54Speaker 1: the season. For you, what does a successful year look
- 37:57Speaker 1: like for the Kraken?
- 37:58Speaker 20: I want us to be our best. And, you know,
- 38:01Speaker 20: where does that take us? What does that look like?
- 38:05Speaker 20: You know, let's find out. But you certainly can't be
- 38:09Speaker 20: the best until you are your best. And that's what
- 38:12Speaker 20: we're looking to do. We're looking to be consistent and
- 38:15Speaker 20: play our game every night.
- 38:16Speaker 1: What do you need to see from this team tonight
- 38:18Speaker 1: to get year six of Kraken hockey started off on
- 38:21Speaker 1: the right foot?
- 38:22Speaker 20: Well, I think, you know, we're going to continue to
- 38:26Speaker 20: to stress consistency but you know it's it's going to
- 38:29Speaker 20: be a high compete game you know they're a big
- 38:31Speaker 20: team I do believe they're going to come out and
- 38:34Speaker 20: try and be physically overwhelming on us and that can't
- 38:38Speaker 20: happen you know and I think that we we need
- 38:41Speaker 20: to combat that with you know pack mentality and also
- 38:45Speaker 20: use our speed we feel like you know unfortunately Sam
- 38:48Speaker 20: Miskevich isn't in the lineup but we feel like we've
- 38:50Speaker 20: increased our speed a little bit here over the summer
- 38:52Speaker 20: that's going to be a big focus for us as
- 38:55Speaker 20: we move forward is to play fast.
- 38:58Speaker 11: That's Lane Lambert. Your lineups are next. You're listening to
