Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: As writers, we have a lot of different ways to measure success and failure.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: More often than not, the first place we look for validation is from external sources.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Were we successful as that other writer?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Did the client hire us for that gig?
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Did our book launch go as planned?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Do our social media followers keep growing and engaging with us?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Well, if the answer to any of those is yes, then we automatically feel like an awesome success.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: But what if you still did the work and yet none of those things happened?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Does that mean you failed?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: The Hollywood screenwriter and producer Brian Koppelman gives us a helpful way of looking at success and failure.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: He said, failure is a huge part of any writer's life.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: So you have to redefine the term so that any day you write is a success.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Now, there are two big advantages to redefining success this way.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: First of all, it puts success totally within your control every single day.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: If you write that day, it means you were successful.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Second, it puts the focus on daily writing, which is the source of all your other results when it comes to your writing.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: If you're not getting the writing done, nothing else matters.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: The marketing doesn't matter, the social media stuff doesn't really matter.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The agents and the publishers, none of that stuff matters if you're not actually getting the writing done, because the writing is what makes everything else happen.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: The daily writing is the engine for all your other success.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So don't let other people or other external factors tell you whether you're successful.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Focus on doing the writing so you can feel like a success every single day.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
