- Daniel: Georgia looks great, Clint. other schools also look good. Clint: Mm, so good. Well n by good do you mean lackluster, less than advertised and worse off than they were last year. Is that what you mean? Well then yes, they looked Daniel: That's exactly what I mean. Yes. Thank you for picking up what I was putting down. today on Talking Dogs, we're going talk about how we feel like Georgia after week one matches up against some of the other college football playoff favorites. He's Clint. I'm Daniel. So happy to have you here on the Talking Dogs. ⁓ if you're not already subscribed to the newsletter. If you ran across this video, so excited to have you. Do do us two favors. We send it out absolutely for free each and every week. Would love to have you as a part of that. ⁓ Clint, Georgia 63-3 winner over Tennessee State. Now it's Tennessee State. Clint: Sure. I ain't nobody played. Ain't nobody been played. Daniel: Georgia ain't played nobody, Paul. Okay. ⁓ and so let's talk about three schools. One, Ohio State, who won 56 to 3 on Saturday against Ball State. Let's talk about Texas, who won 59 7 against Texas State. And let's talk about Oregon, who won ⁓ no. Clint: Yep. Okay. It's not the same type of win. Daniel: Who won th who won thirty-four to twenty-seven as a twenty-five point favorite. Clint: And the sc And the game was closer than that final score indicates. Daniel: Against a one-score win over unranked Boise State at home as a 25 point favorite. ⁓ Alright. Three of these things are not like the other one. Okay. So let's talk first about Georgia. Okay. Coming off a 63 3 win. Sum it up for the people. Clint: No. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Daniel: What gives you confidence that this is actually something good for Georgia and is not just beating up down on lesser competition and you know taking advantage and when when you go up against real athletes, it's not gonna translate. What gives you confidence that this is actually a a ⁓ representative look at who this Georgia team can be as a championship contender? Clint: Kirby Smart has said for the longest time, people, and you remember this, friends, it's not something you might think it's a it's a like coachism or it's a trite thing, but when he says we don't play an appointment, we play ourselves. That's what he's constantly said all throughout his tenure. And he comes from a again coaching tree that knows how to win champions. Okay. Like championships are one with Kirby Smart. ⁓ he said it's who we it's how we play ourselves. We're up against ourselves, not against another team. Daniel: Yeah. Clint: So when you see Georgia dismantle Tennessee State as they should, you think, okay, we're on par with this. If this was if this was Mississippi State and they won against Tennessee State 35 to seven, you would feel Mississippi State fan would feel really good today, would be like, ⁓ Man, great start to the season. That's how we want to play. That's how we want to do. Because that's that's the standard there. Okay. When Georgia comes out and we're running threes and fours in the third quarter, and we're still can't it tells me that Kirby's messaging has gotten through to this team. Like you and I knew that Carson Beck was not going to be the future quarterback to take us to a national championship. We knew it. Because he couldn't take and get what the coaches and what the culture at Georgia were trying to do. This team and these players and these leaders are following Kirby and company all the way. So ⁓ that's what we can tell there. Then you look at the other schools. So I I could tell that definitively. Then we look at the other schools that you mentioned. Steve Sarkeesian, it he said t said Texas State could very well be a playoff team. Daniel: Okay. Steve Sarkeesian is compromised. Clint: He Yeah. Has been for over a decade, ladies and gentlemen. Okay. This is it's not the same standard, it's not the same culture there. Ohio State wants to consider themselves to be who everybody wants them. They they're just gonna go ahead and well we're gonna find out this week who they are. But what I saw in the game was okay, yeah, you're on par with who you thought you were. Truly and honestly. Like no no shade. Daniel: Sure. Yeah. Yeah, and I think that's I think that's the point about those two teams. We're gonna talk you know, we're gonna record an episode giving out predictions for for all the big week one matchups, ⁓ a little bit later in the week. And we'll talk plenty about that Texas Ohio State game. We're gonna learn a lot this weekend about those two teams. ⁓ so I think both of those teams look good. I think they took care of business. I think both of those teams should feel fine about where they are. Both those teams are legitimate championship contenders. Going into this season, if you put a gun to my head and said, Daniel, you only get to pick one team, who do you think is going to win the national championship? I would not have picked Georgia. I would have picked Oregon. And after week one, I'm just here to tell you. I and it's not because of Dante Moore. That's not why I would have picked Oregon. Clint: They looked good. Just fine. Correct. How's that looking? No. Daniel: I would have picked Oregon because of the defensive line. Because I really believed that Dan Lanning finally had a defensive front that was going to be able to stand up against elite competition. Now, it's not like the defense gave up a billion yards, right? In this game. It's not like the defense was terrible. Clint: Very talented. Mm mm. Daniel: But Oregon only turned the ball over one time. They did have ten penalties for ninety yards in the game. But I did not feel like from start to finish that the Oregon offense or the Oregon defense played anywhere near a standard that I would have expected them to play for the the team that I really thought was going to be among the best of college football. So I ask you, Clint. If if you're an Oregon fan right now, or if you're just a Georgia fan, you're a college football fan, you're trying to assess the competition, what Clint: Yeah. Daniel: Is this is this in your mind more likely to be a blip? We've seen it before. We have seen week one blips before. And then teams come all the way back and win it all. But is this more likely to you to be a week one blip, or is this more likely to to you to be a bigger picture concern for Oregon that's going to eliminate them from championship contention? Clint: Yes, we have. We have seen weak one blitz. We have. Yeah. Dan Lanning, a damn good dog. We love him. He's been incredible for us. We love that he's at Oregon. We hope success for him at Oregon when he's not playing Georgia. All of these things are true. If I know Dan Lanning, this is the part where, as a head coach, he must progress. He can get guys up and ready and a team motivated to play in one game, two games here and there. Truly, like he's very good at that. Sustained success, boring success. The Kurt Signetis and the Kirby Smarts of the World are boring success. That's why all y'all hate the screen game. You're you're you're your bigots to the screen, which is on you. By the way, one of our followers over on X said all of Mike Bobo's doors in his house are screen doors, and I thought that is fantastic. ⁓ Daniel: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Screen biggets. Every single one. Clint: Dan Lanning needs to have boring success, and he doesn't have it yet at Oregon. This should have been a boring success game. You should have won 38 to 3, 38 to 5, 38 to 10, and you should have been convincing and you should have been fine. And the defensive line, as to your point, should have been controlling. So it's it is a blip in keeping in line with who Oregon and Dan Lanning are right now today. Can Daniel: They are. Yeah. Clint: Dan progressed, that's always been the question. Can he do it this year? Because this is one of the most talented teams in college football. One of the most talented the most talented team I think he's had at Oregon. He needs to win in in very fundamental fashion, and he hasn't done that yet. I do think this is a blip because I think in other games they're going to get up for it, except for the game. We're we're going to find a bunch. Three weeks from now. USC. I have USC making the playoff. And they're going to have to take a dub. Somewhere in these big games and one of the three that they gotta take a dub in is this Oregon game. And I'll tell you right now, if you I I was trying to look for an early line, because I'm gonna take USC. I promise you in that game. Daniel: I I will not be taking USC. I promise you I will be fighting you in that game. I do think it's a blip. I do think, as much as it was fun to laugh and gasp at the sc at the scores as they came across your phone, or you watch on TV or whatever, ⁓ of Oregon Boise, Dan Lanning at Oregon has done a great job of covering in these big games. He usually, when he's a big favorite, he normally takes care of business. He normally blows people out. ⁓ this was not. Clint: He can he can get up for a couple of games. Uhhuh. Daniel: This was not that. And so we'll time will tell. It would this say more about Boise long term? Like, you know, could could Boise go on a little bit of a run here? And, you know, maybe maybe prove themselves to be a contender as a one loss team in the college football playoff if they continue to play at a high level, potentially. I think that's more likely than Oregon being bad. I think Boise being good is more likely than Oregon being bad. I think Oregon I think all three of these teams that we just mentioned, including and I'll include Georgia, that's four. I think these are still the four best teams in college football. People want to throw LSU in there. I'm here to tell you. Pump the brakes. Clint: Yeah. Talking about the the same exact l mental gymnastics that you w mental exercise, not gymnastics. We're not trying mental exercise you just went through, Clemson is truly that bad. Like Daniel: They're that bad. LSU didn't have a single impressive downfield throw in the game. Not one. Do you know why? They didn't need to. Why would they have thrown the ball downfield? They didn't need to. Clemson couldn't stop him. They couldn't tackle him. So I still I I still think those are the four teams that are the best four teams in college football. Clint: No not one. Sam Levit's legs were the difference maker. Daniel: And I think Georgia's right there with them. I think Georgia answered a lot of questions. I think they answered questions about do they have freak athletes on the offensive skill side and do they have freak athletes on the defensive front side. I think they answered both of those questions with a resounding yes. I know the competition is trash, just like Tennessee State, just like Ball State, the competition is trash. But I think Georgia did everything they needed to do in week one, ⁓ to put themselves right there. And so I it's gonna be a fun season watching these, you know, these upper echelon college football playoff teams. And then, you know, obviously week two coming up here in a few days, we get Texas Ohio State in Austin ⁓ huge, huge game. Clint: Early early look ahead. What what's your lean in that game? Daniel: ⁓ I have a lo I have a stone cold lock in that game. And I'll give it to you on the locks show. Clint: Y I mean Daniel: Yeah, ⁓ I I bet this game in the second week of August, and I have not moved off of my position. I have not wavered. I'm going to bet it again this week. Clint: Haven't wavered. I I was waffling all off season about this. Daniel: Yeah. No, I'm not waffling. I'll talk to you all about it on the Lockspod. Make sure you get over there. ⁓ it'll be right here on this channel. Make sure you're subscribed to this channel. Make sure you're subscribed to the newsletter. That's where you get all of the content that Clint and I deliver each and every week. Love having you here. Love having you along on the Talking Dogs podcast. And we will see you guys next time.
