- 0:01Many people believe that there is some kind of inexorable law
- 0:04of reward and punishment being doled out by God or some other
- 0:09all powerful, all observant being.
- 0:12In the West, children are taught this lesson through the myth of
- 0:16Santa Claus when they are encouraged to be good because
- 0:20Santa Claus is always watching and will only deliver desired
- 0:25gifts or rewards to good children.
- 0:28They grow up believing that some divine being is watching over
- 0:32every action of every individual all the time, and thus they are
- 0:37encouraged to follow the rules of the society and the moral
- 0:40code in order to be rewarded or else suffer the consequences of
- 0:46being subject to various types of suffering.
- 0:50The normal operation of cause and effect explains much of what
- 0:54we experience in our lives. The Buddhist concept of
- 0:58dependent origination describes this cause and effect, also
- 1:03called in the Sanatna Dharma, the law of karma.
- 1:08Everything that happens today was caused by some past
- 1:11concatenation of causes that came together to create the
- 1:15current situation. Choices we made in the past are
- 1:19part of that causal function, and we thus experienced the joy
- 1:24or sorrow based on how our ego personality reacts to what has
- 1:29come to us. Some of the events that create
- 1:33current actions are personal. Some are related to our own past
- 1:37lives of development, the individual stream of
- 1:41consciousness that progressively manifests over time and across
- 1:45births. And some is related to the
- 1:48situation of the physical, vital, mental world into which
- 1:53we are born and live, the civilization, the goals and
- 1:57aspirations, the training and habits of humanity and of our
- 2:02social lives. Since we cannot go back and
- 2:06alter those past actions, we are faced with the decision as to
- 2:10how to respond to the current situation and make the best of
- 2:13it and thereby alter the trajectory of that karmic energy
- 2:18going forward. As long as we remain immersed in
- 2:22the ego personality, we experience the suffering and the
- 2:26joy that alternates with the suffering as we awaken to the
- 2:31independence of our conscious awareness from the external ego
- 2:35personality that we have assumed in this lifetime.
- 2:39As we identify ourselves with the Self, the Atman or the
- 2:44psychic being, which is the divine spark that resides
- 2:47within, we recognize that we can overcome the psychological
- 2:52weight of the suffering through non attachment and observation.
- 2:57And we can even modify the trajectory of the karmic
- 3:01consequences going forward by simply not accepting and
- 3:05changing what appeared to be an inevitable step by step
- 3:09progression. This is where the concepts of
- 3:13determinism and free will find their coexistence in harmony
- 3:18with each other. Free will is the exercise of the
- 3:22conscious soul to transform the causal chain and redirect it.
- 3:27Until we have separated from the attachment to the external
- 3:31being. We are subject to the
- 3:33determination of past events and the habitual patterns we have
- 3:37developed in dealing with events and circumstances, Sriorobindo
- 3:43notes quote. Suffering is not inflicted as a
- 3:47punishment for sin or for hostility.
- 3:50That is a wrong idea. Suffering comes like pleasure
- 3:54and good fortune, as an inevitable part of life.
- 3:58In the ignorance, the dualities of pleasure and pain, joy and
- 4:03grief, good fortune and I'll fortune, are the inevitable
- 4:07results of the ignorance which separates us from our true
- 4:10consciousness and from the Divine.
- 4:14Only by coming back to it can we get rid of suffering.
- 4:18Karma from the past lives exists.
- 4:20Much of what happens is due to it, but not all.
- 4:24For we can mend our karma by our own consciousness and efforts,
- 4:29but the suffering is simply a natural consequence of past
- 4:32errors, not a punishment, just as a burn is the natural
- 4:37consequence of playing with fire.
- 4:40It is part of the experience by which the soul, through its
- 4:43instruments, learns and grows until it is ready to turn to the
- 4:48Divine. The attitude you express in your
- 4:51letter is quite the right one. Whatever sufferings come on the
- 4:55path are not too high a price for the victory that has to be
- 4:59won, and if they are taken in the right spirit, they become
- 5:03even a means towards the victory.
