- 0:17Speaker 1: every day. Adam Kaplan is on Radio Row. He was
- 0:20Speaker 1: also on my flight and he is here for today's
- 0:23Speaker 1: Football four. But before we get to Adam, we got
- 0:25Speaker 1: a bunch of stuff we want to touch on for
- 0:27Speaker 1: Football at four today. We want to thank mel and
- 0:29Speaker 1: Ernest and Son's Old Fashion butcher Shop and bring a
- 0:31Speaker 1: team Rocko over a key Acura of Atlantic City and
- 0:35Speaker 1: Doctor Roy and the team over at the Nizams. Thanks
- 0:38Speaker 1: to them for sending us to Radio Row this year.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You just got Donovan McNabb, We got Jeff Garcia still
- 0:42Speaker 1: to come, Romeo Dobbs still to come. We talked to
- 0:45Speaker 1: Dobbs and Garcia full disclosure earlier, so we do have
- 0:48Speaker 1: some nuggets we'll talk to you about with that. But
- 0:50Speaker 1: one of the things that we talked about with Romeo Dobbs,
- 0:53Speaker 1: who played for Sean many in this past year. What
- 0:57Speaker 1: can the Eagles expect with the new coach? And he
- 1:02Speaker 1: said he expects the receivers to He told the receivers
- 1:06Speaker 1: to expect the football a lot more.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Well, I would hope that it's out quicker because this
- 1:13Speaker 2: is a West Coast offense and they're gonna run Mike
- 1:16Speaker 2: and Scott.
- 1:17Speaker 3: It's a timing based offense.
- 1:18Speaker 2: The ball's got to come out like that's not You
- 1:21Speaker 2: got to understand, if you talk to coaches who are
- 1:23Speaker 2: working that offense, if your quarterback has taken two five
- 1:26Speaker 2: or more, they're gonna wind up getting benched. It's not
- 1:29Speaker 2: gonna say I'm just telling you. We're gonna say this now, Scott,
- 1:32Speaker 2: as you and I speak to each other here, no
- 1:35Speaker 2: coach who works in the West Coast offense will ever
- 1:37Speaker 2: find it acceptable for the ball to come out in
- 1:38Speaker 2: two point seven to three seconds.
- 1:40Speaker 1: MC.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Excuse me? Do hurts historically? Is he takes just about
- 1:46Speaker 2: longer than any quarterback to get rid of the football.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Right, it's not gonna work.
- 1:49Speaker 4: And that's one thing that full of Sclodson Jeff Garcia
- 1:52Speaker 4: kind of alluded to us, was that that he noticed
- 1:55Speaker 4: that Jalen is missing. He's missing maybe his first read,
- 1:58Speaker 4: because by the time he to get rid of the ball,
- 2:00Speaker 4: it's already too late. He's got to move on. But
- 2:02Speaker 4: instead of noticing, he would know he's playing that offense. Yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 4: and that's I think that was one of the things
- 2:06Speaker 4: he was bringing up. And so it's to your point, Ken,
- 2:10Speaker 4: you know, let's let's play that forward Ken Jalen. Whether
- 2:12Speaker 4: it's mental or reading the defense pre snap, can he
- 2:16Speaker 4: get to the point where he can get rid.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Of the ball that fast?
- 2:18Speaker 2: A right, Scott, I'm gonna tell you a story.
- 2:20Speaker 3: So John D.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Fileppo, the formy Eagles quarterbacks coach, is the front of
- 2:23Speaker 2: Vinceie the Birds. So I asked, Flip, he said, Coach,
- 2:27Speaker 2: I said, I actually asked him about what you just
- 2:29Speaker 2: asked me. This is this is when this is when
- 2:32Speaker 2: Hurt started struggling in twenty twenty three, when when the
- 2:34Speaker 2: regression started. You know, he was great in twenty two
- 2:37Speaker 2: when the league could not figure out how to stop
- 2:39Speaker 2: him and A. J.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Brown. So I said, coach, what do you do like
- 2:42Speaker 3: if your quarterbacks not get rid of he goes. You
- 2:46Speaker 3: don't yell at him, you don't scream at him.
- 2:49Speaker 2: You asked him what he saw okay on the sideline,
- 2:52Speaker 2: but you can't really coach him on the sideline. You
- 2:54Speaker 2: can't do it to you have tape study. Then you
- 2:56Speaker 2: go the balls just to go here. You don't ask
- 2:59Speaker 2: him what because you're you're not trying to insuld him.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Uh huh.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Like it's the same when he coached Carson Wentz when
- 3:03Speaker 2: Wentz came in as a rookie. Wentz came in a
- 3:07Speaker 2: pro offense out of North Kota State.
- 3:09Speaker 3: But that's college football still, and you have.
- 3:12Speaker 2: To understand how to speak and connect with your players, Scott.
- 3:15Speaker 3: So what John said is you keep repping.
- 3:17Speaker 2: You keep repping and have him understand how it has
- 3:20Speaker 2: to come out and when it has to come out,
- 3:22Speaker 2: and you show him and you.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Watch the practice tape together because you're seeing it the
- 3:27Speaker 3: same issue.
- 3:27Speaker 2: It's not like he doesn't have this issue in practice.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That's the secret sauce. Of course he does. It's not
- 3:33Speaker 2: like all of a sudden he's great in practice in
- 3:35Speaker 2: the game when he asked, the look that he wants
- 3:37Speaker 2: is you just brought up Mike.
- 3:38Speaker 3: From Jeff Garcia that he's not seeing the same thing.
- 3:42Speaker 2: He's seeing it, but he's not somehow processing He's not
- 3:45Speaker 2: the only quarterback, by the way, Mike to ever have
- 3:47Speaker 2: this issue.
- 3:48Speaker 1: One of the things that Garcia did say was it
- 3:50Speaker 1: was very beneficial to him to play for Mariucci in
- 3:54Speaker 1: San Francisco, Detroit, Andy, in Philadelphia. After all, the verbis
- 4:01Speaker 1: she said, I don't know how I would have handled
- 4:03Speaker 1: it if I would have had to keep changing.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So that is the word. Okay, So West Coast is.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Donovan also had gone the same thing that he does.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Think that it would have hurt his development if he
- 4:13Speaker 1: had to keep changing offenses after leaving Philly and to
- 4:16Speaker 1: go to Washington, then Washington going to Minnesota.
- 4:19Speaker 2: So right, because as you know, the West Coast offensive verbiage,
- 4:24Speaker 2: the non West Coast is the numbering system, the North
- 4:27Speaker 2: turner system. So it's hard. So as we go inside
- 4:29Speaker 2: football guys here, it's kind of fun. I did inside
- 4:32Speaker 2: the Birds. I was telling Mike Smith coach Smith, I've
- 4:34Speaker 2: known casually forever for twenty some man years. We just
- 4:37Speaker 2: we've never really exchanged numbers. This is a great part
- 4:39Speaker 2: about coming here, but we never really knew each other
- 4:42Speaker 2: outside of being the media, you.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Know, coming up to manasking he's great. We had him
- 4:46Speaker 1: on last year.
- 4:46Speaker 3: He's great, really good dude.
- 4:48Speaker 2: But moving this along here, it's uh, it's gonna be
- 4:52Speaker 2: a fascinating off season for the Eagles.
- 4:53Speaker 3: They have so much to do.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Jeff Garcia did tell us, and by the way, we
- 4:58Speaker 1: have not aired the Jeff Garcia We will do that
- 5:01Speaker 1: later today or tomorrow. One of the things he can
- 5:04Speaker 1: tells is that he called the Eagles Nick Sirianni Howie Roseman,
- 5:09Speaker 1: and he offered to coach. He was a coach with
- 5:12Speaker 1: the Rams in twenty fifteen, where his quarterback was Sean Mannion.
- 5:17Speaker 1: He said he would love to work alongside Sean and
- 5:21Speaker 1: with Jalen Hurts. Could more coaching changes or additions or
- 5:27Speaker 1: any wild stuff be in the future here, Mike.
- 5:31Speaker 2: My sense is still probably by the time we're done here,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I mean, think about it, right, they already hired someone
- 5:40Speaker 2: for Park Fraser spot as PES game coordinator, so you
- 5:44Speaker 2: would have to think he's probably not gonna be back
- 5:46Speaker 2: where he's reassigned. Right, They're ready interviewing the quarterbacks coach.
- 5:49Speaker 2: So you have to understand, I'm thinking based on you know,
- 5:52Speaker 2: our intellig inside the Birds, who you're gonna see at
- 5:54Speaker 2: least three you can see more. Now, now I understand something.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Let me just explain how it works. You have what
- 5:59Speaker 2: are called non knowles where they don't pick up the option.
- 6:02Speaker 2: The coaching contracts you're not coordinators are two years plus
- 6:05Speaker 2: the club option. It's called the rollover, and then coordinators
- 6:08Speaker 2: get at least three if they have any tenure. Guys
- 6:10Speaker 2: to get three years. So yeah, and you got to
- 6:13Speaker 2: give Sean Mannion. This is the thing we're trying to
- 6:15Speaker 2: figure out it inside the Birds.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Who are is connections? Who would he want to bring in?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Well, here's one. Mike Garrafulla named to watch for Eagles
- 6:22Speaker 1: quarterback coach. The team hasn't commented on Scott Loffler's status. Leffler,
- 6:27Speaker 1: excuse me, Greg Olsen, who finished the season as the
- 6:30Speaker 1: raiders interim offensive coordinator. Manion played under Olson with the Seahawks,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and sources say he is interested in bringing him to Philly.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Holy has been Holy smokes. Derek Carr, Blake Bortles. I
- 6:44Speaker 2: just off him without even looking. He's what I find funny.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He would have worked well and Andy Reid when Andy
- 6:50Speaker 2: was here. He's a progressive play caller. He wants to
- 6:54Speaker 2: throw the ball all the time. He's he's his daughter
- 6:58Speaker 2: is one of the best volleyball player in the country.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's about that. Yeah, and may I commented that he
- 7:03Speaker 1: was in.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yes, only they got him out of retirement. He's he's
- 7:09Speaker 2: actually coached for the Raiders three different times. Isn't that crazy?
- 7:12Speaker 1: The Raiders have been in three different cities. So, yes,
- 7:14Speaker 1: he's a really good quarterback.
- 7:15Speaker 3: He is a really big, really good quarterback coach.
- 7:17Speaker 2: And honestly, Mike, that's the where Syrianni made a mistake
- 7:22Speaker 2: on this. For six months, now, why don't you have
- 7:23Speaker 2: a senior offensive assistant?
- 7:25Speaker 3: But then it after the Buffalo game that he couldn't
- 7:27Speaker 3: do both.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And you have I talked about him, Mike, right and
- 7:31Speaker 1: and one of the things, oh, man, I just completely
- 7:34Speaker 1: blanked on the fault that you said. You I know,
- 7:36Speaker 1: but you brought up something that makes me think about
- 7:40Speaker 1: having the quarterback coach. Oh, you guys have de Filippo
- 7:44Speaker 1: on who is credited for coaching Wentz very hard to
- 7:49Speaker 1: get the best out of him that year, and then once.
- 7:50Speaker 3: He left, it all went to and and and it
- 7:53Speaker 3: was interesting.
- 7:54Speaker 2: De Filippo was the technical part of Carson and Frank Reich,
- 7:58Speaker 2: who's now coaching with the Jets as the offensive coordinator.
- 8:02Speaker 2: He was the metal part for Carson, so they let
- 8:05Speaker 2: de Filippo handle everything. Give Doug Peterson credit and Frank credit.
- 8:09Speaker 2: They handed off everything.
- 8:11Speaker 3: To d Flippo like usually you don't see that.
- 8:14Speaker 2: But they knew his work with Derek Carr and others
- 8:17Speaker 2: because John was a quarterback coach and Olie was the
- 8:19Speaker 2: OC in twenty in twenty fourteen with Derek Carr and
- 8:23Speaker 2: the Raiders.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Any thoughts a couple of days later since the Fangio stuff, Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I put something on our show.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I let me just explain it to folks because we
- 8:36Speaker 2: like to go inside the game here, and it's had football.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Scott coaches, if they're going to retire, it's done within
- 8:41Speaker 2: three to five days after your season.
- 8:44Speaker 1: You don't wait.
- 8:45Speaker 2: So my senses, Scott and Mike, they had to have
- 8:49Speaker 2: this talking for the season was over. And you know
- 8:52Speaker 2: on Jimmy Kempsey's reporting, he told me I wanted to
- 8:54Speaker 2: retire and they obviously talked him out of it. With
- 8:56Speaker 2: Chad Johnson goes by here, o Joe Sinko.
- 8:59Speaker 1: He gave me a big hugger earlier, he said the
- 9:02Speaker 1: offensive coordinator.
- 9:03Speaker 2: It's insane number eighty five new program. But Mike, the
- 9:07Speaker 2: bottom line is you take that picture the.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Eagles oc Chado cho Cinco. The next Eagles offensive coordinator
- 9:14Speaker 1: Chado cho Cinco, Someboddy.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I don't know if you find anyone back Joe, but
- 9:21Speaker 2: he said tell Sirian exactly.
- 9:23Speaker 3: He has no coaching experience.
- 9:24Speaker 2: But anyway, my guys, honestly, it happens very early, and
- 9:29Speaker 2: there's there's no way he's going to hold up his coaches.
- 9:31Speaker 2: It doesn't work. I heard some inspectable, well maybe he
- 9:34Speaker 2: wanted to. I've covered thissins twenty seven years. I've never
- 9:37Speaker 2: heard of a coach players yes, because had start a
- 9:40Speaker 2: training camp because they don't want to go through it,
- 9:42Speaker 2: either you're coaching or not.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Like that doesn't so bark something unforeseeing. I'm not saying
- 9:47Speaker 3: it can't happen.
- 9:47Speaker 1: So then the question might be then, but I know this,
- 9:50Speaker 1: do this last year? Yah, and you think you find
- 9:52Speaker 1: someone that could replace him, Now what do you do?
- 9:56Speaker 2: He loves Joe Joe Caspers. This guy we've been talking
- 9:58Speaker 2: about this now, Joe Casper. He got to no Joe
- 10:01Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two when Vic was consulting h when
- 10:05Speaker 2: he was there. You know what's so funny, Mike, it's crazy.
- 10:10Speaker 2: So Vic Fangil kept showing up for at a lot
- 10:14Speaker 2: of Like he turned up to the Dolphins training camp
- 10:16Speaker 2: when we were there before they traded Jalen Rager. Like,
- 10:18Speaker 2: why is Vic Fangiel always around the Eagles in training camp?
- 10:21Speaker 2: Now we know what he was. He was consulting for
- 10:24Speaker 2: him or he was a friend of the team, as
- 10:25Speaker 2: they say many exactly. So anyway, No, it makes you
- 10:29Speaker 2: would never do it that to your coach. It would
- 10:31Speaker 2: be literally I've never heard of.
- 10:32Speaker 3: A coach walking away six weeks later because they'd.
- 10:36Speaker 2: All have time. There's no jobs out there. Watch well,
- 10:40Speaker 2: that's a different one. At twenty that absolutely Frank Raig,
- 10:43Speaker 2: John c. Filippo had actually infected their futures.
- 10:47Speaker 1: It impacted a lot of people's futures.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Yeah, so on Vic, though, just to kind of tidy
- 10:51Speaker 4: this up, then, is your expectation that maybe this will
- 10:53Speaker 4: be his last year?
- 10:56Speaker 3: Like why would you at this point?
- 10:59Speaker 2: And he turned sixty eight and he's been coaching forty
- 11:01Speaker 2: two years in pro football, including the Stars. I was
- 11:03Speaker 2: a season ticket holder when I was crazy. He was
- 11:06Speaker 2: in his twenties, then yeah, because if he's been thinking
- 11:11Speaker 2: about it for the last two years, which is what
- 11:13Speaker 2: we understand, Like, what.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Are you coaching still for? Like I I know he
- 11:18Speaker 3: talked about his one of the one of somebody got
- 11:20Speaker 3: a ring.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Now he's got his ring, Like what do you what exactly, Scott?
- 11:24Speaker 3: Well, why are you coaching? Why are he's still coaching?
- 11:26Speaker 1: So?
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, what would be the point? And you want to
- 11:29Speaker 3: hand it off when you're when you fix someone's ready.
- 11:31Speaker 2: With where's Clint Hurt? Either Clint Hurt, who's this guy?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Or Joe Casper? The question for Joe Casper is he
- 11:36Speaker 2: ready to run a defense at thirty five years old?
- 11:39Speaker 1: Though you never know? Well on the other side, a
- 11:42Speaker 1: lot of people were saying if they would have if
- 11:44Speaker 1: they knew this ahead of time, should they have tried
- 11:46Speaker 1: to keep Parker Parker? Yeah?
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know because it could have been the
- 11:50Speaker 2: works mic to try to convince him to coach.
- 11:53Speaker 3: You know who knows.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what we've Uh, we've learned a
- 11:57Speaker 1: lot today. We talked to a lot and got some
- 11:59Speaker 1: very interest I can't.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Wait to hear the Cheff Garcia interview.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Wow. Uh Jeff was very good and listen, I thought
- 12:05Speaker 1: one of the other things he brought up, and I
- 12:07Speaker 1: think you were obviously covering the team at that time.
- 12:09Speaker 1: You know, so fine, oh six six six sixteen O
- 12:14Speaker 1: six six McNab gets hurt. They bring him in and
- 12:18Speaker 1: he has this great run. He became so popular and
- 12:21Speaker 1: I had him. Would it be untenable that you could
- 12:23Speaker 1: have came back the next year? Did you want to?
- 12:25Speaker 1: He said? I wanted to, but I knew.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Oh, I know, because I was talking to his agent,
- 12:29Speaker 2: Steve Backer, and I remember being it's so funny when
- 12:32Speaker 2: you met your names. I I covering Steories have to
- 12:35Speaker 2: go the club or the agent, and Steve is a
- 12:38Speaker 2: he had no omnia ausen while that was a nomnioso.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Was the first agent with Steve Baker. And he's out here.
- 12:42Speaker 2: He's out He's from New York, but he's from the Bayer.
- 12:44Speaker 2: He lives in Bay Area, and I remember blowing Steve's
- 12:47Speaker 2: phone up like twenty times to know whether he's coming
- 12:49Speaker 2: back round. He goes, Hey, it's not our call in
- 12:51Speaker 2: this one, it's the clubs. And you know what happened? Well,
- 12:53Speaker 2: Garcia mentioned what did he say?
- 12:55Speaker 1: He said, they offered him like what will it take,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and they offered him like basically like no, you can't
- 13:00Speaker 1: come back money or too low or you're asking. It
- 13:04Speaker 1: was a funny way that he put it. But he
- 13:06Speaker 1: wanted to come back, but he knew that he and
- 13:08Speaker 1: Donovan could not co exist. They didn't like each other
- 13:11Speaker 1: as much as he knew his popularity would probably cause friction.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Did you talk about t O with.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Him, Garcia?
- 13:20Speaker 3: Not really. I love to hear what he thinks of you.
- 13:24Speaker 1: We were a little short on time and we were
- 13:26Speaker 1: kind of getting side. Well he's walking around still. Man'll
- 13:29Speaker 1: try to got this white beard man. He does uh
- 13:33Speaker 1: when you see this event, you see Cooper de Gene.
- 13:35Speaker 1: He has become here. He was everywhere. He was on McAfee,
- 13:40Speaker 1: was on k Adams, He's you know what I love
- 13:42Speaker 1: about Bear.
- 13:43Speaker 2: You did a great interview with Britain Covey, which you
- 13:44Speaker 2: got in trouble for like three years ago, because I
- 13:47Speaker 2: remember that I was on after him and you and
- 13:50Speaker 2: you you were telling about him like what.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Did he say? Yeah, he said some stuff he should
- 13:53Speaker 3: have said.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Well he had said and this comes back to where
- 13:55Speaker 1: we are right now. He said, after psyching, they should
- 13:59Speaker 1: have hired a coordinator that had experience, and they hired
- 14:04Speaker 1: obviously Bryan Johnson.
- 14:06Speaker 3: But he was wrong. Well see here's the thing I
- 14:09Speaker 3: say that.
- 14:12Speaker 2: You could say that, but nobody really knew by Brian
- 14:14Speaker 2: Johnson and and he got this is when both Sirianni
- 14:21Speaker 2: and Hurts where they were out, say they had problems internally.
- 14:24Speaker 2: This is stuff that Jeff and I aren't inside the birds.
- 14:26Speaker 2: We found about a week after this, you know a
- 14:28Speaker 2: little bit. We had no idea how bad it was.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Like I think Nick was so scared Scott about being fired.
- 14:35Speaker 2: And it's just so funny how things work out.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Well by the way, Uh sorry, we Ben Watson is
- 14:41Speaker 1: going to join us here in five minutes.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Oh he's good.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Ben Well, And somebody texted on the textboard asked
- 14:47Speaker 1: Ben Jonson Ben Watson about chasing Cooper Champ Bailey down
- 14:51Speaker 1: and saving that touchdown? Good player, man? Yeah. You know,
- 14:54Speaker 1: today's the anniversary of the Eagles for a Super Bowl?
- 14:56Speaker 1: Is it on this day?
- 14:58Speaker 3: Like it's here's a funny story if you check.
- 15:01Speaker 2: We used to put it up as our image for
- 15:03Speaker 2: football for you and I at that Super Bowl in
- 15:06Speaker 2: the food court, folks, food court. It's as big as
- 15:09Speaker 2: my backyard. Half a better than this, Oh dude, the
- 15:12Speaker 2: worst one?
- 15:13Speaker 1: Were you?
