Latest / The Monégasque Table / Rose Gold Edible Glitter: When It Beats Gold and Silver
Transcript
- Margaux: There are 21 shades in the drink glitter line. Two of them get bought over and over as a pair — and the third metallic is the one that quietly rescues the palette the other two ruin. Dana: I want to say up front that I've never once looked at a wedding and thought, "this needs a third metallic." Margaux: Welcome to The Monégasque Table. Today: what rose gold edible glitter is actually for, and whether it earns a place next to gold and silver. Dana: And whether it's just pink wearing a fancier name. Because that's what I think it is. Margaux: Here's the answer up front. Rose gold is a real third option, and it exists because the first two have a blind spot. Gold reads warm — on a blush and ivory table it goes brassy and starts fighting the flowers. Silver reads cool, and on that same pale table it just disappears. Rose gold sits between them, so it's the shade for blush, ivory, dusty pink and cream palettes. That's the whole job. If your palette is jewel-toned or black-tie, you do not need it. Dana: Fine. But give me the receipt, because "sits between them" is the kind of sentence a catalog writes about itself. Margaux: The receipt is what people actually buy. Gold and silver are the anchor pairing across the whole catalog — silver's most common add-on was gold in every quarter of 2025, and gold's most common add-on was silver. They're bought as a set because they're the two defaults. Rose gold isn't in that pairing, and it isn't trying to be. It shows up in the baskets where somebody has a specific palette in their head and the defaults didn't serve it. Dana: Then here's my round, and I've been holding it since the cold open. You've described a color. You have not described a product difference. Pink is already in that line — there's Baby Pink, there's Sakura Pink, there's Hot Pink. So a planner on a budget looks at this and thinks: I'll buy the pink I already own and skip the upsell. What do you say to her? Margaux: That's the round you win, and it's the honest version of this episode. Rose gold and pink are not interchangeable, but the difference isn't in the jar — it's in what the surface does with it. Pink is a color. Rose gold is a metallic, so it behaves like gold and silver do: it catches the light and throws it back at you, and it changes as the glass turns or the light moves across the frosting. Pink stays pink. If what you want is a blush tone, buy the pink and keep your $15. If what you want is the flash — the thing that makes someone pick the glass up and tilt it — that's the metallic, and rose gold is the metallic that doesn't fight a warm palette. Dana: So the test is: do you want the color, or do you want the shine. Margaux: That's the test. And it's the same question underneath every shade decision in this category. Dana: All right. Scale it for me, because I plan for rooms, not for one glass. How far does a jar go? Margaux: This is the boring part and it's the part planners like. The live serving guidance says 0.1 grams a serving, and a 10 gram jar pours about 100 servings. So one jar covers a 100-glass reception at roughly 15 cents a glass. If your guest list runs past that, the 15 gram luster jar is about 150 servings. Past that, it's just 1 jar per 100 glasses and the math stays boring on purpose. Dana: And the price, so I can put it in a line item. Margaux: The 10 gram glitter jar is $14.99 at standard price, which works out to $1.50 a gram. The 15 gram luster dust jar is also $14.99 — that one is $1.00 a gram, because it's a different format. Bigger jar, finer powder. Dana: Explain the format thing, because I've now heard "glitter" and "dust" in the same breath twice and I don't want to order the wrong one. Margaux: Simplest split in the category. Flake glitter runs 50 to 500 microns — those are visible pieces, and that size is why it stays suspended in a drink instead of sinking straight to the bottom. Luster dust is 5 to 25 microns, so it's a much finer powder, and it's built to sit on a surface and give it a smooth metallic sheen. Drinks want the flake. A fondant cake tier or a chocolate finish wants the dust. Rose gold is a flake, so it's a drinks-first shade. Dana: Then let me ask the question every single person planning a wedding is going to ask, and you're not going to like it. The toast. Can I put this in the champagne? Margaux: I'm going to answer that precisely, because precision is the only useful answer here. The federal color-additive listing that covers this pigment in drinks names a specific set: distilled spirits in a certain range, cordials, liqueurs, flavored alcoholic malt beverages, wine coolers, cocktails, and non-alcoholic cocktail mixers. Wine and straight sparkling wine are not on that list. So when someone asks me about a toast, I point them at the signature cocktail, not the champagne — that's where the listing actually lives, and that's where I'd put the shimmer. Dana: That's a more careful answer than I expected from a company that sells the jar. Margaux: It's the only answer we've got that's true. And it's a better event anyway — a signature cocktail is the thing guests photograph. Dana: Who should skip rose gold entirely? Margaux: Three people. If your palette is jewel-toned, black-and-white, or anything cool — skip it, silver is doing that job better. If you only decorate pale cakes and never touch drinks, skip it — you want the fine dust in gold or silver, not a drinks flake. And if you're buying your first jar and you have no palette in mind at all, skip it: rose gold is a specific answer to a specific problem, and a first jar should be a general one. Dana: Dana's Scorecard. I came in calling this pink with a better agent. I'm leaving somewhere else. Rose gold is a metallic, not a color — the difference is flash, not tint, and it's the metallic that doesn't fight blush, ivory and cream. It's a flake at 50 to 500 microns, so it's for drinks first. Budget line: about $15 a jar, 0.1 grams a serving, roughly 100 servings, 1 jar per 100 glasses. Caveats I'm keeping: if your palette is cool or jewel-toned this shade is a waste of $15, and the toast question has a real answer that isn't "sure, anything." Margaux: Footnote, then. The MONÉGASQUE Rose Gold 10 gram drink glitter is on Amazon, full ingredient list printed on the jar, about $15 — from a line that's shipped over 400,000 orders across the US, Canada and the UK. Check the listing for current pricing. Dana: Next time, something with a much shorter deadline. Halloween cookies. Everyone dusts them at the wrong moment and then wonders why the glitter's on the counter instead of the cookie. Margaux: Timing is the whole trick, and we'll do it with 7 weekends left on the clock. This show is produced by the team at Monégasque, with AI-crafted hosts, and every number you heard was checked by humans against the documents. See you at the table.
