- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to patre gets Unfiltered.
- 0:12Speaker 3: I'm not gonna argue with something I didn't I can't
- 0:15Speaker 3: argue with the things that I don't have the information.
- 0:17Speaker 4: I'm gonna make it even me. Chism's targets from from
- 0:21Speaker 4: Saturday for Paul, and I'm just gonna text it too.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I don't know if people are familiar with the movie
- 0:25Speaker 2: The Clockwork Orange in his eyes Open, that's what we're
- 0:29Speaker 2: gonna do, Paul. We're gonna make them watch all of
- 0:30Speaker 2: Chiss highlight reels.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:32Speaker 4: I mean he threw a twenty yard out in the
- 0:34Speaker 4: game the other night. That's going around film Twitter. That's
- 0:37Speaker 4: just right, it's.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Going around the dock web. Momentum is only as good
- 0:41Speaker 3: as the next day starting picture like like, no, sorry,
- 0:45Speaker 3: when the betstop's one ten in a row, momentum has
- 0:47Speaker 3: something to do with that. That's a clutch drive. Tom
- 0:49Speaker 3: Brady goes down the field and says, now you just
- 0:52Speaker 3: can leave seventies games over again. At seventeen seven, I
- 0:55Speaker 3: look at Fred and say, that's game right.
- 0:56Speaker 2: It's true, it's true. Where do you rank Chism in
- 0:59Speaker 2: terms of all time Patriots wheredy ranches and relative to
- 1:03Speaker 2: Stanley Morgan and Randy Wark, slightly lower Christians in La.
- 1:07Speaker 2: What nonsense? Today?
- 1:10Speaker 1: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:12Speaker 5: Presented by Toyota's official website for deals by a Toyota
- 1:16Speaker 5: dot com.
- 1:19Speaker 6: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday here
- 1:23Speaker 6: at Jillette Stadium. The gang's all here. It's Deuce, Evan, Paul, Me,
- 1:27Speaker 6: Matt and Napooth. We're talking Patriots. We're getting closer to
- 1:31Speaker 6: that big day against the Raiders a week from this
- 1:34Speaker 6: coming Sunday.
- 1:35Speaker 7: So Max Crossby, Yeah, it's good.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Crossby, and thankfully not Trey Hendrickson as well. Here he's
- 1:46Speaker 2: getting close. But anyway, I do digress. Today is the
- 1:50Speaker 2: deadline for cut day, so that's at four o'clock. You
- 1:55Speaker 2: know a lot of reports coming out around the league
- 1:57Speaker 2: teams cutting players early. This team made an announcement was
- 2:02Speaker 2: a Friday about a handful of players.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Fourteen of them and who were they?
- 2:08Speaker 3: Well, the big one for me, I get them for
- 2:10Speaker 3: the whole place.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Okay, just read it.
- 2:13Speaker 4: It's a long list.
- 2:14Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:16Speaker 3: The group on Friday was Jaheem Bell, Micah Bernard, Philip.
- 2:22Speaker 7: Is It bleedy glitty blitty blitty.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Isaiah Bolden, Zay Carle, Fotheringham, Phil Lutz, R. J. Moten,
- 2:31Speaker 3: Jordan Polk, Tyrese Robinson, city So, Shane Watts, Ben Wooldridge,
- 2:37Speaker 3: and Kyle Pico and Monty Ricey. That was the group
- 2:41Speaker 3: that was let go on Friday. Now there have been
- 2:44Speaker 3: some reports of guys that have been let go today.
- 2:47Speaker 3: They have been informed that they will be getting released,
- 2:49Speaker 3: but we have no official word in any of those.
- 2:51Speaker 2: We won't touch those yet. They'll be an official release
- 2:54Speaker 2: coming out from the Patriots somewhere around for thereafter. I
- 2:57Speaker 2: remember back in the day, and uh not the last regime,
- 3:03Speaker 2: but the regime before that, four o'clock would roll around
- 3:06Speaker 2: and it'd be nothing.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Crickets probably be eleven mill of lights deep.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I'd be lucky if by eight o'clock that night we'd
- 3:13Speaker 2: have a release. Yeah. I'm guessing with this regime it'll
- 3:18Speaker 2: be pretty prompted.
- 3:19Speaker 7: Yeah, I hope.
- 3:19Speaker 9: So, I mean, I don't think there's a ton of
- 3:22Speaker 9: really hard decisions. I think, you know, some guys are
- 3:25Speaker 9: on the bubble, but overall, I think we know who
- 3:27Speaker 9: the team's going to be. Who are they going to
- 3:29Speaker 9: be the guys that contribute. Heard from Mike Rabel yesterday
- 3:32Speaker 9: saying guys are going to rotate, and I think that's
- 3:34Speaker 9: the case with a lot of teams right now early
- 3:36Speaker 9: on in the season that you're trying to look at
- 3:38Speaker 9: the starters. And I do think along the offensive line
- 3:41Speaker 9: you need to have starters, you need to have kind
- 3:42Speaker 9: of your guys, But defensive front, those rotation guys, even
- 3:46Speaker 9: probably some of the cornerback stuff. Is Christian Zalez ready
- 3:49Speaker 9: to go wire to wire week one or is there
- 3:52Speaker 9: a little bit of a rotation without Austin and you know,
- 3:54Speaker 9: break up his snaps a little bit.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yep. I do want to talk about the last game
- 4:00Speaker 2: against the Giants, not so much the game itself, but
- 4:04Speaker 2: a lot of Paul shows are saying that what we
- 4:07Speaker 2: learned from that game is that the Patriots have a
- 4:10Speaker 2: big depth problem. And I get it. You know, we've
- 4:15Speaker 2: talked about depth on especially certain areas, and this team
- 4:19Speaker 2: could be an issue going into this season. But you know,
- 4:23Speaker 2: the alarm bells that went off because you know, the Giants'
- 4:27Speaker 2: third stringers killed the Patriots third stringers. These are guys
- 4:31Speaker 2: on both teams that aren't going to be playing. Most
- 4:34Speaker 2: of them most of there are some, but most of
- 4:36Speaker 2: you know, most of them are going to be playing.
- 4:38Speaker 2: And when in the other games when the Patriots second
- 4:40Speaker 2: stringers were out there, guys more likely to make the team,
- 4:43Speaker 2: they didn't do so badly. You know, that's not to
- 4:47Speaker 2: say that depth isn't an issue, but I don't know
- 4:50Speaker 2: if it warranted, you know, the the alarm bells that
- 4:53Speaker 2: went off on.
- 4:55Speaker 9: Some I think it's just a function of a new
- 4:58Speaker 9: regime coming in and they certainly extended themselves to sign
- 5:01Speaker 9: a number of high quality free agents that have come
- 5:04Speaker 9: in here and are clearly taking over significant roles. Williams,
- 5:09Speaker 9: Robert Splaine, just a couple off the top of my head.
- 5:11Speaker 9: Stefan digs of course. But I think it's hard to
- 5:14Speaker 9: replace your whole team and to really have quality depth
- 5:17Speaker 9: in year one that you know fits what you're trying
- 5:19Speaker 9: to do. So I'd much rather be looking at it
- 5:21Speaker 9: this year this way than we did last year.
- 5:23Speaker 7: When you know, I think Paul Rightley pointed.
- 5:25Speaker 9: Out that they resigned a lot of their guys, But
- 5:27Speaker 9: you know, Michael and when you Kyle Dugger, I mean,
- 5:29Speaker 9: now we look.
- 5:30Speaker 7: At those guys maybe through a slightly different light.
- 5:32Speaker 9: But at the same time, I think those guys were
- 5:34Speaker 9: more they didn't have the stars they signed Christian Barmore,
- 5:36Speaker 9: so I'll give him credit for that one last year.
- 5:38Speaker 7: He certainly seems like a star.
- 5:39Speaker 9: But I look at this as you're going to return
- 5:42Speaker 9: most of this roster, your contributors next year as well,
- 5:44Speaker 9: So you're looking at a two year window with most
- 5:46Speaker 9: of these guys definitely a needed edge.
- 5:48Speaker 7: I would sell it which I might.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Be starters this year, might be bumped down next year
- 5:52Speaker 2: when you break.
- 5:53Speaker 9: Right, absolutely, and then you look at some of the
- 5:55Speaker 9: guys maybe that are that are holdovers a little bit
- 5:57Speaker 9: from the previous regime. I mean, we've had a little
- 5:58Speaker 9: bit of a shake up at safety and Craig Woodson
- 6:01Speaker 9: is probably there to stay, but you know, what's that
- 6:03Speaker 9: going to look like two three years down the road.
- 6:05Speaker 7: So I would just watch next year for their ability.
- 6:07Speaker 9: To you know, we don't have to totally chase everything,
- 6:11Speaker 9: but we can be selective. We can find some spots
- 6:13Speaker 9: to upgrade, and we can also draft and sign guys
- 6:15Speaker 9: that are going to be our kinds of players that
- 6:18Speaker 9: provide that quality depth. So when you get into the
- 6:20Speaker 9: third preseason game and those guys play, maybe you see
- 6:22Speaker 9: some more guys with a little more promise. Last example
- 6:25Speaker 9: I just point out is Tommy DeVito and we said,
- 6:27Speaker 9: we joked at the end of the pregame show, like
- 6:29Speaker 9: or the postgame show. That's a cool four string quarterback
- 6:32Speaker 9: who looks like he can play a little bit, you know.
- 6:34Speaker 9: Could that be something the Patriots look at quarterback position
- 6:37Speaker 9: as bringing in a third guy now that I mean, that's.
- 6:40Speaker 2: One area where I think I would like, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 2: I was a little bit surprised that Wooldridge was, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 2: because he's your third guy. It's just Dobbs right now
- 6:51Speaker 2: is the other quarterback. So I think they could use
- 6:54Speaker 2: an upgrade there, whether it's bringing in a third guy
- 6:58Speaker 2: or even someone to replace Dobbs. This is the number
- 7:00Speaker 2: two with who's available. Bailey Zappy reportedly is available. I
- 7:05Speaker 2: think I think he'd be an upgrade over Dobbs. Honestly, yeah,
- 7:09Speaker 2: I don't.
- 7:10Speaker 7: I don't know if anybody out there is really gonna go.
- 7:14Speaker 4: What am I going to say?
- 7:15Speaker 3: What can I What can I do? Some people you've
- 7:17Speaker 3: exasperated young Evan.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Okay, what's the problem.
- 7:21Speaker 4: No, there's no problem.
- 7:23Speaker 1: This is a little bit of a problem.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Come on, No, this is not one that I need
- 7:27Speaker 4: to battle. I don't care that much about it.
- 7:30Speaker 2: You don't care about yeah, and I get no. No,
- 7:33Speaker 2: I just mean the Bailey's down right.
- 7:35Speaker 3: But yeah, I do agree that your point.
- 7:38Speaker 4: I know, I do agree that it's a it's in need.
- 7:40Speaker 4: I do agree that there's depth issues at quarterback right now.
- 7:44Speaker 4: I just don't know if Bailey Zappi is the answer.
- 7:46Speaker 4: That's all.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Well, I'm just yeah.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Your point is to find the answer. But your point
- 7:51Speaker 3: is a good one. I think that they could do
- 7:52Speaker 3: better at backup quarterback.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I I agree.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I mean, for at least some competent it has just
- 7:56Speaker 3: been really inconsistent throughout the sum I think he's inaccurate.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And I think what I saw from just in that
- 8:02Speaker 2: last game from de Veto, I saw decisive this inaccuracy.
- 8:06Speaker 4: And it's a similar offense. So he's running with Brian Dables,
- 8:08Speaker 4: so he's going to have some familiarity with what they're doing.
- 8:11Speaker 4: But I think Dousa hit the nail on the head
- 8:14Speaker 4: with the roster depth. I think all of us had
- 8:17Speaker 4: concerns about roster depth even before this last preseason game.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I think we've talked about it a lot on our shows,
- 8:23Speaker 4: about the fact that, yeah, they turned over the top
- 8:26Speaker 4: of the roster and they look better in terms of
- 8:28Speaker 4: their frontline players than what they've had in recent years.
- 8:31Speaker 4: But it's going to take more than one offseason to
- 8:34Speaker 4: completely flip the fifty three. And guys like Kyle Duggar,
- 8:38Speaker 4: Anthony Jennings, Jilani Tavai, they might not be in your
- 8:41Speaker 4: long term plans, but it might be a little bit
- 8:45Speaker 4: premature to move on from those players this season because
- 8:48Speaker 4: they are NFL players. So if you start gutting the
- 8:51Speaker 4: roster of guys that aren't scheme fits for what they're doing,
- 8:54Speaker 4: especially on defense, and then you're really turning it over
- 8:58Speaker 4: to depth players that frankly, I don't know our NFL players.
- 9:02Speaker 4: At least I know that if they have a rash
- 9:05Speaker 4: of injuries at safety, Kyle Dugger went right, is a
- 9:08Speaker 4: starting caliber safety in the NFL. At least I know
- 9:10Speaker 4: Anthony Jennings can play the role, can play the position
- 9:14Speaker 4: if they need to have him in there. So I'd
- 9:16Speaker 4: rather them hold their water a little bit on doing
- 9:19Speaker 4: that versus let's flip the entire roster in one offseason
- 9:24Speaker 4: and go into the year with a lot of unknown
- 9:26Speaker 4: I agree.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I agree with that. I mean, if now depth is
- 9:30Speaker 2: Anthony Jennings and to buy and dother I know they
- 9:35Speaker 2: were a little bit overpriced to be but that's different.
- 9:38Speaker 2: But that's pretty.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Good I would. Yeah, but that's a different argument, and
- 9:43Speaker 3: I get your point. I don't think that the game
- 9:46Speaker 3: had anything to do with depth, like showing your lack
- 9:49Speaker 3: of depth. I think that where I agree with I
- 9:53Speaker 3: was gonna say where I agree with Fred one thousand
- 9:55Speaker 3: percent is that's somehow now to me that it happened
- 9:57Speaker 3: the week before it happened in the Minnesota game, when
- 10:00Speaker 3: the starters didn't do all that well against Minnesota's backups.
- 10:04Speaker 3: That's when this depth thing started to sort of you know,
- 10:07Speaker 3: everybody somehow looked at the roster and said, huh, they're
- 10:10Speaker 3: a little thin at that spot, which the three of
- 10:12Speaker 3: us have been talking about all off season. You know,
- 10:15Speaker 3: the one big concern we all had is, yeah, they've
- 10:19Speaker 3: upgraded some spots, but it's really hard to do it
- 10:21Speaker 3: all at once. They did a really nice job I
- 10:23Speaker 3: think of increasing the overall talent level, but it's nowhere
- 10:27Speaker 3: near where it needs to be. And certainly if they
- 10:30Speaker 3: lose a gonzo, you see the impact that it has
- 10:33Speaker 3: when you take him out for the whole summer. If
- 10:37Speaker 3: you lose a guy here or there, you don't have
- 10:40Speaker 3: a lot of depth. I didn't need the game against
- 10:42Speaker 3: the Giants Scrubs to tell me that they don't have
- 10:45Speaker 3: a ton of depth. But Fred's right, that sort of
- 10:47Speaker 3: sounded some kind of an alarm.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's because people were predicting them to
- 10:51Speaker 4: win double digit.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Games, right, It's like eleven wins or busts, and it's like,
- 10:56Speaker 3: are you looking what they have? Like, I don't know.
- 10:59Speaker 3: I guess I just didn't see that kind of overall
- 11:02Speaker 3: talent level. But the other part of this is what
- 11:05Speaker 3: you guys are talking about with you know, Yeah, I'd
- 11:08Speaker 3: be fine if you have all these guys, But I'm
- 11:10Speaker 3: not sure that like Dugger and Keyon White and like TVAI,
- 11:16Speaker 3: Like is Christian Ellis better than Jelanie to Vais Craig
- 11:20Speaker 3: Woodson better than Kyle Duger? Is Jalen Hawkins better than
- 11:24Speaker 3: Jabrill Peppers?
- 11:26Speaker 2: Like?
- 11:26Speaker 3: So you can say that now you have depth, but
- 11:28Speaker 3: I'm not sure that the guys that you're replacing those
- 11:30Speaker 3: guys with are better than the guys they're replacing. But
- 11:32Speaker 3: that's been my big mantra all off season is I'm
- 11:35Speaker 3: really excited about bringing in Milton Williams of Robert splane A,
- 11:39Speaker 3: Carlton Davis, because I think those guys are all better
- 11:42Speaker 3: than the guys they replaced. If they're going to try
- 11:44Speaker 3: to like do this all at once and move on
- 11:47Speaker 3: from let's face it, a contract in Kyle Douglas's case
- 11:50Speaker 3: that they probably don't love, I don't think that's better
- 11:53Speaker 3: for you in the short term.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it might be.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Better off in the long term, but right now, I
- 11:58Speaker 3: don't think the guys that are playing safety is as
- 12:00Speaker 3: Peppers and Dugger.
- 12:01Speaker 4: This happens all the time, though, when there's a coaching
- 12:03Speaker 4: staff and a regime change and now they were running
- 12:05Speaker 4: a different defense and Kyle Dugger doesn't fit this defense,
- 12:08Speaker 4: but he fit the last defense, and he signed an
- 12:11Speaker 4: extension with the last regime. And this is Tailor's old
- 12:14Speaker 4: as time in the NFL. But I still I think
- 12:17Speaker 4: we're on the same page that if they had to
- 12:19Speaker 4: play Kyle Dugger, I still feel better about that being
- 12:22Speaker 4: the case and having to play you know, some of
- 12:25Speaker 4: the other guys that they've had in here at that position.
- 12:27Speaker 4: So maybe you feel.
- 12:29Speaker 3: It was good about having to play Jalen Hawkins and
- 12:31Speaker 3: Craig Woodson.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Well, but I hear you, but they're also asking them
- 12:35Speaker 4: to do different things.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I Douger's contract wasn't what it was. I don't
- 12:40Speaker 3: think this would be such a huge problem scheme schematically,
- 12:43Speaker 3: that's that's I just think they're looking to get out
- 12:45Speaker 3: of that contract, which is fine. I think that's like,
- 12:47Speaker 3: like Evan just said, it's a taiale as old as time.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Guys want their own their own guys. He signed that
- 12:52Speaker 3: contract under the previous regime. Sure, I don't think that
- 12:56Speaker 3: Mike Vrabel is wrong if he if he thinks like
- 12:58Speaker 3: that again, I'll go back to my shows. I won't
- 13:01Speaker 3: beat them up for something that hasn't happened yet. But
- 13:04Speaker 3: if they're thinking like that, I totally understand that that's
- 13:07Speaker 3: a very normal reaction. It's what I wished happened last year, right,
- 13:12Speaker 3: you know, figure out the guys that you like and
- 13:15Speaker 3: want to move on with and then let the other
- 13:17Speaker 3: guys go. Instead, they just re upped everybody, and I
- 13:20Speaker 3: think that's part of the reason why you're in this situation.
- 13:22Speaker 3: And the other reason that you're in this situation is
- 13:25Speaker 3: the obvious one that Mike always hammers home. When you're
- 13:28Speaker 3: draft like you've drafted, there's your depth. You don't have
- 13:31Speaker 3: any depth. You don't have frontline players, so you had
- 13:34Speaker 3: to bring in free agents to replace guys that weren't
- 13:36Speaker 3: good enough, and you have no depth behind them because
- 13:38Speaker 3: your draft picks. We'll see about this draft class. We
- 13:41Speaker 3: said everything about this draft class. Right now, everything looks great.
- 13:46Speaker 3: You know, Will Campbell's going to start at left tackle
- 13:50Speaker 3: and Jared Wilson has a very good chance to start
- 13:52Speaker 3: at left guard. If they're not any good, then it's
- 13:54Speaker 3: going to be like it was last year when everybody said,
- 13:56Speaker 3: well Jaalen Polk start in day one. But then at
- 14:00Speaker 3: the end of the year you looked at that draft
- 14:02Speaker 3: class a lot differently than you did at the beginning
- 14:03Speaker 3: of the year.
- 14:04Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, I just where the injury is going
- 14:06Speaker 9: to happen this year. That's the that's the big unknown,
- 14:09Speaker 9: because in a couple of select spots.
- 14:10Speaker 7: You're you're you're in trouble pretty quick.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I just go way back.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I think we've been saying that for the last five years. Yeah,
- 14:15Speaker 2: and I think it's the Patriots have injuries, and.
- 14:18Speaker 7: It's probably true.
- 14:19Speaker 3: I mean, I just think I'm definitely true.
- 14:21Speaker 9: Reaching for a random example, but going back to two
- 14:24Speaker 9: thousand and four, where you know, thy Log goes down,
- 14:26Speaker 9: but you have at a Sante Samuel kind of waiting
- 14:29Speaker 9: in the wings, and there aren't a lot of positions
- 14:30Speaker 9: on the roster right now, where do you say, like,
- 14:33Speaker 9: maybe I could make an argument of saying, hey, if
- 14:34Speaker 9: one of the defensive linemen goes down, maybe you know,
- 14:36Speaker 9: maybe a rookie like a farmer, like Farmer gets a chance.
- 14:41Speaker 9: Like that's one spot, but there aren't a lot of
- 14:44Speaker 9: other ones, especially like the.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Tackling spot, those interior defensive linemen. Like I guess I
- 14:50Speaker 3: was thinking we were going to see a little bit
- 14:52Speaker 3: more and I haven't seen.
- 14:53Speaker 7: I haven't seen much out of Farmer or farms.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Yeah, guys, right now, but you have Williams far more
- 14:59Speaker 4: top and Tongo I think has had a nice summer
- 15:02Speaker 4: and looks a little bit surprising. And then you know
- 15:05Speaker 4: you see Keon White's kind of like the hybrid guy
- 15:10Speaker 4: that can move around and do different things. So I
- 15:13Speaker 4: still feel like they're okay on the defensive front, especially
- 15:16Speaker 4: with Chase on playing as well as he has all summer.
- 15:18Speaker 4: But I just they're asking these safeties to do a
- 15:22Speaker 4: lot of different things than what they were before.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Or well.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Yeah, so the old defense, they were too gapping up front,
- 15:29Speaker 4: so guys were just kind of holding the wall and
- 15:32Speaker 4: you know, eating blocks and things like that. So the
- 15:34Speaker 4: second level of the defense where the playmakers, the linebackers
- 15:37Speaker 4: in the safeties, the hybrid safeties are the guys that
- 15:40Speaker 4: were supposed to come up and make plays, Whereas now
- 15:43Speaker 4: the defensive line is teeing off and they're getting up
- 15:45Speaker 4: the field, so they're not necessarily asking the second and
- 15:49Speaker 4: third level of the defense to make as many tackles
- 15:51Speaker 4: or many splash plays as they were before. So now
- 15:55Speaker 4: it's more about covering space. It's about being in space,
- 15:59Speaker 4: cover more ground sideline to sideline, but also covering in
- 16:04Speaker 4: the back end in terms of past game stuff, So
- 16:06Speaker 4: the safeties are gonna be more in like deep zones
- 16:10Speaker 4: and like ranging over the top and like doing that
- 16:12Speaker 4: sort of thing, versus like Kyle Duggar coming up and
- 16:16Speaker 4: trying to fill the B gap, you know, like he
- 16:17Speaker 4: would in the old defense. So there's just a lot
- 16:20Speaker 4: of different moving parts in terms of how they what
- 16:23Speaker 4: they're asking. So even though I agree with Paul just
- 16:26Speaker 4: in a game of Madden, like Kyle Duggar probably has
- 16:29Speaker 4: a higher rating than Craig Woodson or Jalen Hawkins, but
- 16:32Speaker 4: in this scheme, their skill set might be better than
- 16:35Speaker 4: Kyle Duggar's for the type of defense that they want
- 16:38Speaker 4: to run. If they're gonna play, oh those guys deep,
- 16:41Speaker 4: it's gonna be different.
- 16:42Speaker 2: It makes sense like if you were going back in
- 16:44Speaker 2: the draft and drafting, you wouldn't draft Doug or for
- 16:49Speaker 2: this system, right, you know, but for the old system
- 16:52Speaker 2: where you want someone to get down close to the line,
- 16:54Speaker 2: And he made sense, I that could be possible.
- 16:59Speaker 7: Yeah, see how it comes together?
- 17:00Speaker 9: I mean, I still think these things are very fluid,
- 17:02Speaker 9: and as we get really going into the nitty gritty
- 17:04Speaker 9: of the season, you'll see what they have planned for
- 17:06Speaker 9: specific roles, and you know, how does it all come
- 17:09Speaker 9: together on a week to week basis. Certainly things have
- 17:12Speaker 9: been interesting to watch, especially the last couple of days
- 17:14Speaker 9: of practice that were not allowed to report on. But
- 17:16Speaker 9: they're shifting into that regular season mode and you're you're
- 17:19Speaker 9: getting a little bit more clarity of how they're going
- 17:21Speaker 9: to see things. But I would expect a lot of
- 17:22Speaker 9: rotation across both sides of the ball.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Well Rabel said that the other day, especially on defense
- 17:28Speaker 2: up front. He said, you know, there's gonna be a
- 17:30Speaker 2: lot of guys getting reps and probably evenly distributed, and.
- 17:34Speaker 4: They want to play fast like they want to play.
- 17:37Speaker 4: If you want to be aggressive, that's it.
- 17:41Speaker 2: That's why Milton Williams didn't have a lot of reps
- 17:44Speaker 2: as much as we think you might get here. Yeah,
- 17:47Speaker 2: all right, so we've got that on the table. Later
- 17:50Speaker 2: in the show. Gary Myers just came out with this book,
- 17:57Speaker 2: it's The Brady Belichick Debate, and we're going to be
- 18:01Speaker 2: talking to him in the one o'clock hour. He's going
- 18:03Speaker 2: to call in, so we'll talk about the book. I've
- 18:06Speaker 2: read it, Paul has read it. I've learned a couple
- 18:09Speaker 2: of things that I don't think I knew. Album. We'll
- 18:12Speaker 2: talk about that when he's on the show. Okay, yeah, good,
- 18:15Speaker 2: So look forward to that.
- 18:17Speaker 7: Get to the bottom of it.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Yeah, finally, what else do we got kind of settled?
- 18:23Speaker 9: Like I was going to say practice the last couple
- 18:24Speaker 9: of days, I just thought, was, you know, interesting, And
- 18:26Speaker 9: to Paul's.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Have you noticed a change in practice since you know,
- 18:31Speaker 2: training camp and the public portion of training camp has ended.
- 18:34Speaker 9: A little bit A little bit, I mean, it's a
- 18:36Speaker 9: little more fun that they're actually doing drills on the
- 18:38Speaker 9: field right in front of us now, whereas during training
- 18:42Speaker 9: camp they're always like it feels like as far away
- 18:44Speaker 9: as possible. But you know, it's just funny because we're
- 18:47Speaker 9: watching practice, and I think you did it on our
- 18:49Speaker 9: first run of the show. We talked about we don't
- 18:51Speaker 9: really know like where we're at right now between the
- 18:53Speaker 9: last preseason game and there's just this void in between
- 18:56Speaker 9: now in the first.
- 18:56Speaker 7: Regular season game.
- 18:58Speaker 9: It's long, but all of a sudden, in the middle
- 18:59Speaker 9: of practice, like you see very able go over and
- 19:01Speaker 9: like this isn't it. We're not reporting any of this stuff, guys,
- 19:03Speaker 9: So so not like game plan all right, they're running
- 19:07Speaker 9: the Raiders defense right now, but they're definitely still getting
- 19:10Speaker 9: work in and as they've made cuts, you've seen the
- 19:13Speaker 9: team start to come together and get whittled down a
- 19:15Speaker 9: little bit. So definitely some interesting things. I mean, I
- 19:18Speaker 9: would without saying anything. I just think Drake's Drakes looked
- 19:20Speaker 9: pretty good the last couple of days. And you know,
- 19:23Speaker 9: that's you know, what everybody wants to know, and that's
- 19:25Speaker 9: the big topic because you're going into the season. But
- 19:27Speaker 9: I thought he's had, you know, solid, a couple of
- 19:28Speaker 9: days of practice and we'll see if the mount of
- 19:31Speaker 9: activity got this summer was enough for him to start
- 19:33Speaker 9: fast and I mean come out of the gates.
- 19:35Speaker 2: So obvious that I think, at least on this show,
- 19:38Speaker 2: I don't think we've talked about it as much as
- 19:40Speaker 2: other shows, But it really does come down to Drake May,
- 19:42Speaker 2: doesn't it, And it's all about his development.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Yeah, well, if you want to do one of those
- 19:48Speaker 3: sort of worse to first meteoric rise, you can't do
- 19:51Speaker 3: that unless the quarterback play is at a much much
- 19:54Speaker 3: higher level. And that's how And I know it's it's
- 19:57Speaker 3: always case by case, but just look at all the
- 19:59Speaker 3: teams that you can think of that did that, and
- 20:02Speaker 3: it almost always involves a guy either coming into the
- 20:05Speaker 3: program and playing at a higher level or just making
- 20:08Speaker 3: a huge leap from one year to the next, you know,
- 20:11Speaker 3: like Stroud and Daniels. There's a million, million examples, but
- 20:14Speaker 3: those are the two most recent that come to mind.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, so all eyes are going to be on
- 20:20Speaker 2: him every game.
- 20:22Speaker 9: Every press comes with the position. I mean, he spoke
- 20:25Speaker 9: yesterday and I think he's saying all the right things.
- 20:27Speaker 9: I think he gets it, and it's I just everybody
- 20:30Speaker 9: needs to realize this is gonna be a process, you know,
- 20:32Speaker 9: like it's not gonna like we're not coming out of
- 20:34Speaker 9: the gate week one.
- 20:35Speaker 7: It'll give him a little bit of leeway.
- 20:36Speaker 2: And I know how this show is predicting thirteen wins
- 20:41Speaker 2: even eleven. You know, like my I've been steadfast and
- 20:44Speaker 2: I'm staying I'm staying with it. Flora is six, Ceiling
- 20:48Speaker 2: is ten. That's that's what I've been saying, and I
- 20:51Speaker 2: haven't seen anything yet to make me change that. Now
- 20:54Speaker 2: that's a pretty wide gap, and I think they're probably
- 20:56Speaker 2: going to end up somewhere in the middle, somewhere around eight.
- 21:01Speaker 2: But if they do that, I'll be happy. Something had
- 21:03Speaker 2: to have gone right compared to last year for them
- 21:07Speaker 2: to get to AID and I'll be okay with that.
- 21:09Speaker 2: If it's more than that, great, But again, we're not
- 21:15Speaker 2: just one year. We're two years in a row. For
- 21:18Speaker 2: win team. You know, it's gonna take some time, folks,
- 21:23Speaker 2: it really is.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I just wonder if they can win enough games and
- 21:27Speaker 4: show enough promise to make themselves more desirable for some
- 21:30Speaker 4: of the build up programs.
- 21:31Speaker 7: I feel like there's a program if Drake makes.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Playing well, okay, you're going to see the future.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Because it is it has been frustrated in the last
- 21:38Speaker 4: couple of years, and it does seem like they do
- 21:41Speaker 4: want to pay a wide receiver to come here to
- 21:43Speaker 4: play with Drake May, but it doesn't feel like any
- 21:45Speaker 4: of the wide receivers want to take their money. So
- 21:48Speaker 4: can you change that narrative? Can you change that perception
- 21:51Speaker 4: of the team so that next offseason, if they offer
- 21:55Speaker 4: Chris Godwin type player thirty thirty five million dollars, he
- 21:58Speaker 4: actually takes it of going back to Tampa Bay, or
- 22:02Speaker 4: Brandon Ayuk says don't trade for me, or Calvin Ridley
- 22:05Speaker 4: goes to Tennessee instead of coming here, like, it would
- 22:07Speaker 4: be nice to at least be able to change that
- 22:10Speaker 4: perception a little bit.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Yep, yeah, yeah, And that's why you just sort of
- 22:13Speaker 3: have to see it. But I would agree with Fred
- 22:14Speaker 3: on the surface, you know, if they were to win
- 22:17Speaker 3: eight games, it would be hard to believe for me
- 22:20Speaker 3: that that wasn't progress, that wasn't a sign of progress.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Now you're right, Like, you might look at it and
- 22:26Speaker 3: maybe they win a couple of ugly games against teams
- 22:28Speaker 3: that are not very good and Drake may doesn't look
- 22:31Speaker 3: great in winning them, and then you're like, they won,
- 22:34Speaker 3: but you might change your mind, you know, like the
- 22:37Speaker 3: twenty one, you know, ten and seven season, and you know,
- 22:40Speaker 3: they went to the playoffs and it was hard not
- 22:42Speaker 3: to be excited with a rookie quarterback. But somehow Cranky
- 22:45Speaker 3: Paul wasn't overly excited at the time because of the
- 22:48Speaker 3: way they won some of those games, you know, taking
- 22:50Speaker 3: advantage of massive injuries to a couple of teams and
- 22:53Speaker 3: winning a three to nothing game in ridiculous conditions, Like
- 22:57Speaker 3: it just didn't really seem like it was something that
- 22:59Speaker 3: was sustainable to me, and it wasn't. Yeah, so you
- 23:03Speaker 3: might see that and you might look at it, you know,
- 23:06Speaker 3: and say, well, I don't feel as good about the
- 23:07Speaker 3: eight wins as I thought I would feel, but I would.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Twenty two season like they were eight and nine and
- 23:13Speaker 4: twenty twenty two. And if you if you finished this
- 23:16Speaker 4: year eight and nine, you'd feel good. But that season
- 23:19Speaker 4: was the offense was already kind of falling apart at
- 23:22Speaker 4: that point, and it did not look like it was
- 23:25Speaker 4: headed in a good direction. So you can go eight
- 23:28Speaker 4: and nine in this league and still not feel great
- 23:30Speaker 4: about your team.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if Rable all of a sudden decides
- 23:34Speaker 2: to make a defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator and all that stuff,
- 23:37Speaker 2: like there were conditions there.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Two games worse than you were the previous year, so
- 23:44Speaker 3: you won.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Some some bad football games that year in twenty twenty two,
- 23:49Speaker 4: like just rock fights.
- 23:51Speaker 9: I think though, with the inevitable injuries that happened, it
- 23:54Speaker 9: would really reflect well on this team if let's just
- 23:57Speaker 9: say no random example, like the right tackle goes down
- 24:00Speaker 9: and you need to have one of these youngsters get
- 24:02Speaker 9: in and play and look confident, or if you need
- 24:04Speaker 9: to turn to maybe a player like I mean we
- 24:07Speaker 9: keep saying Toby but Jennings, like you have to turn
- 24:09Speaker 9: to somebody who maybe you don't think ever quite got it,
- 24:11Speaker 9: but now he looks like he's playing well in this
- 24:13Speaker 9: system or playing well for these coaches.
- 24:15Speaker 7: You know, those little things.
- 24:16Speaker 9: I think what might be the details you have to
- 24:19Speaker 9: look for to get the full picture of the season,
- 24:21Speaker 9: where you know, yeah, they had some injuries, but man
- 24:23Speaker 9: Vederian Lowe had to fill in for Will Campbell for
- 24:26Speaker 9: two days and it wasn't a disaster like it was
- 24:28Speaker 9: last year.
- 24:28Speaker 7: And like those things, I.
- 24:29Speaker 9: Think little signs that they're building a program here. I
- 24:32Speaker 9: think that's to me what Evan's kind of getting at,
- 24:34Speaker 9: that there's a program here, there's a sense of who
- 24:36Speaker 9: this team's identity is and do you want to come
- 24:38Speaker 9: be a part of it. I felt that way about
- 24:40Speaker 9: Mike Frabele and Tennessee. He kind of had an identity there.
- 24:42Speaker 9: You knew what you were going to have to deal with.
- 24:44Speaker 9: Part of it was Derreck Henry, of course, but you know,
- 24:46Speaker 9: at the same time, those players emerge when you have
- 24:48Speaker 9: a good situation, and those become your stars.
- 24:50Speaker 2: That we I mean, there's one thing that we've learned,
- 24:52Speaker 2: and I say learn, but one thing that's been cemented
- 24:56Speaker 2: in the last few weeks is that they've just failed
- 25:00Speaker 2: in the drafting the last few years. And one of
- 25:03Speaker 2: the reasons we're in the situation we're in now is
- 25:06Speaker 2: because of that. And when you think about it, Drake
- 25:09Speaker 2: May being you know, the sole survivor of last last
- 25:13Speaker 2: year's draft, you know, possible.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean there's a couple other guys still around, right.
- 25:19Speaker 9: But Marcello style might have been in the main. I mean,
- 25:21Speaker 9: then they're not the star players that they needed. And
- 25:24Speaker 9: I mean every one of these draft misses from going
- 25:26Speaker 9: back to whatever you want to do eighteen, I mean,
- 25:28Speaker 9: every time you have one of these drafts where you
- 25:31Speaker 9: don't pull anything, it's another year you're going to pay
- 25:33Speaker 9: for it down the road.
- 25:34Speaker 2: And you don't have to have stars from every draft,
- 25:36Speaker 2: but you need contributors two, you know, three, maybe four
- 25:40Speaker 2: at the high end, contributors from every draft, and that
- 25:43Speaker 2: builds your foundation. Those are your guys that you're you're
- 25:46Speaker 2: building around, and then you're adding pieces through free agency
- 25:50Speaker 2: and subsequent drafts. You have to do that.
- 25:54Speaker 4: But I feel like what Deuce was saying about the program,
- 25:56Speaker 4: like it's only half the battle to identify the talent
- 26:00Speaker 4: in the draft. The other half of the battles developing
- 26:02Speaker 4: the talent and then being scheme fits and like all
- 26:05Speaker 4: that good stuff. So like you can go out there
- 26:07Speaker 4: and you can think that Jalen Polk is a really
- 26:09Speaker 4: good college player and he's a You scout him and
- 26:11Speaker 4: you think he's gonna be a good NFL pro, but
- 26:13Speaker 4: then he gets to the pros and he's in an
- 26:15Speaker 4: offense that doesn't really suit him, or he's in an
- 26:18Speaker 4: offense that doesn't have great coaching or great foundation to
- 26:21Speaker 4: it or anything, and that can derail a young player's career,
- 26:25Speaker 4: as it has in a lot of ways for Polk.
- 26:27Speaker 4: So I'm not saying that Polk would have been a
- 26:28Speaker 4: star if he was in a better situation, But it's
- 26:31Speaker 4: kind of hard to say, like was it the chicken
- 26:33Speaker 4: or was it the egg with the twenty twenty four draft,
- 26:36Speaker 4: because everything was in such a state of flux with
- 26:39Speaker 4: the entire program that I just don't know if any
- 26:42Speaker 4: of those guys really stood a chance. And I think
- 26:44Speaker 4: Drake May is so talented that he's kind of full
- 26:48Speaker 4: proof of this, Like he kind of just overcame it.
- 26:51Speaker 4: But you're not gonna if you're like a third or
- 26:53Speaker 4: fourth round pick, you're not going to overcome this kind
- 26:55Speaker 4: of coaching turnover and all this different stuff. So hopefully
- 27:00Speaker 4: like they get back to a place with Vrabel and
- 27:02Speaker 4: this staff where they can develop talent again.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. You can't undervalue coaching in
- 27:09Speaker 2: the NFL like other sports. It's not half as important
- 27:15Speaker 2: as football. That's my opinion.
- 27:17Speaker 4: There's just so many examples of guys that we all
- 27:20Speaker 4: thought were going to be good coming out of college
- 27:23Speaker 4: and it just doesn't work for whatever reason. And a
- 27:25Speaker 4: lot of the times it's talent, but a lot of
- 27:27Speaker 4: the times it's also situation and the coaching that he
- 27:31Speaker 4: had and the scheme he was in and it just
- 27:33Speaker 4: doesn't click for him at this level. So you know,
- 27:36Speaker 4: look at Chaison, like if Chaison has a good year
- 27:38Speaker 4: with the Patriots, Like that's a former first round pick
- 27:41Speaker 4: that's kind of had some bad luck along the way
- 27:44Speaker 4: here with coaching changes and things like that. So maybe
- 27:47Speaker 4: it's just as simple for him as he's in the
- 27:49Speaker 4: right place at the right time now and he realizes that.
- 27:53Speaker 9: I found myself thinking a lot about last year's class
- 27:55Speaker 9: and just a lot of the same scouts and regime
- 27:58Speaker 9: that pick those players are still here. And I'm not
- 28:01Speaker 9: trying to get into like blame and all that, but
- 28:03Speaker 9: I just I wonder about the whole relationship of the
- 28:05Speaker 9: coaching staff saying these are the kind of players we
- 28:08Speaker 9: want or you know, does the scouting staff bring them
- 28:12Speaker 9: the players.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Say these are the guys who I think we'll just
- 28:14Speaker 2: touched on it. I can't I can't see it working
- 28:17Speaker 2: the other way. I think it has to start from
- 28:19Speaker 2: the head coach down where he sets the philosophy. He decides,
- 28:23Speaker 2: this is the type of football we want to play,
- 28:25Speaker 2: These are the type of players we need for each position,
- 28:28Speaker 2: and then he gives that menu to his scouting staff
- 28:32Speaker 2: and go find these players. I can't think. I can't
- 28:35Speaker 2: imagine it working the other way, where they're telling the
- 28:38Speaker 2: coach how to play. The coach has to tell them
- 28:41Speaker 2: how they want to play. And that was the beauty
- 28:43Speaker 2: of having Bill for all these years is like you
- 28:46Speaker 2: can argue about like he wasn't the greatest drafter throughout,
- 28:50Speaker 2: but like there was always that foundation, like the scoutings
- 28:54Speaker 2: knew how Bill wants. You know, this is a type
- 28:58Speaker 2: of safety he's looking right, this is the type of
- 29:00Speaker 2: linebacker he's looking for. And having that consistency helps, you know,
- 29:04Speaker 2: that's we need to get back to that. Well.
- 29:06Speaker 4: I think Rabel's that guy. Like Rabel, that's Elliot Wolf
- 29:09Speaker 4: has said that they were more organized this year in
- 29:11Speaker 4: the draft and a big reason why is that Rabel
- 29:13Speaker 4: has a vision of the type of players that he
- 29:15Speaker 4: wants them to draft. And I think, you know, a
- 29:18Speaker 4: big part of it is also Ryan Cowden and Stretch
- 29:21Speaker 4: being involved. But it just seems like they have types
- 29:24Speaker 4: now again. They have you know, scheme fits and guys
- 29:27Speaker 4: like this is our safety type, this is you know,
- 29:30Speaker 4: the body type a lot, and this is the skill
- 29:31Speaker 4: set that we want. And that's like last year's draft,
- 29:34Speaker 4: I just think even at the time in real time,
- 29:37Speaker 4: you were just kind of wondering, like, who does this
- 29:40Speaker 4: player fit? Like they were drafting you know, big power
- 29:44Speaker 4: guards to play in an outside zone scheme and it's like,
- 29:47Speaker 4: so were you drafting based off of what they were
- 29:50Speaker 4: doing in the past and you just didn't have the time.
- 29:52Speaker 4: He didn't feel like to kind of uproot the system
- 29:55Speaker 4: and change it on the fly. So like Leyden Robinson,
- 29:59Speaker 4: you know, isn't going to be on this team anymore,
- 30:01Speaker 4: you know, as a draft pick from last year, I
- 30:03Speaker 4: never really understood the scheme with Leyden Robinson, like they
- 30:07Speaker 4: were going to run a West Coast offense, They're gonna
- 30:10Speaker 4: be outside zone, and then they've drafted a power guard
- 30:13Speaker 4: to play in that offense, and it just didn't really
- 30:16Speaker 4: fit to begin with. And when you're drafting at that
- 30:19Speaker 4: area of the draft, third, fourth, fifth round, you're not
- 30:22Speaker 4: getting start Like, that's not where you're expecting to get
- 30:24Speaker 4: stars that are scheme proof. That's where you're expecting to
- 30:27Speaker 4: get depth and guys that fit what you're trying to do, right,
- 30:31Speaker 4: So I just I think it's a big difference when
- 30:34Speaker 4: you have a guy like Rabel that's saying, this is
- 30:36Speaker 4: what we're gonna do, you know, in all all walks
- 30:39Speaker 4: of it, in all position groups.
- 30:40Speaker 7: That's I was just gonna say, sorry for that's what
- 30:42Speaker 7: a DNA might say.
- 30:43Speaker 9: And you, I think you're right, like you need to
- 30:44Speaker 9: hit on those draft picks at least to have that base.
- 30:46Speaker 9: But I would say every two years you need to
- 30:48Speaker 9: find a star player. But every two years there needs
- 30:51Speaker 9: to be someone somewhere that come and can play above expectations.
- 30:56Speaker 9: And if you don't do that, you don't start to
- 30:58Speaker 9: those of the guys you have to hit in the.
- 30:59Speaker 4: First Oddly they have hit in the first round, like
- 31:02Speaker 4: Christian Gonzalez was a hit. I think Drake May we
- 31:05Speaker 4: we think is going to be a hit. So in
- 31:07Speaker 4: a way that they have hit in the first round
- 31:10Speaker 4: in the last couple of years. I mean, Gonzales, All
- 31:12Speaker 4: Pro player like that, that was one of Bill's best
- 31:15Speaker 4: draft picks at the end. So it's weird. It's like
- 31:18Speaker 4: they actually have hit in the first round the last
- 31:21Speaker 4: couple of years. It's been the rest of the drafts
- 31:24Speaker 4: that have looked like disasters.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Paul looks like he's holding something in no, no, okay, And.
- 31:29Speaker 3: You guys are all right, yeah, I mean you guys
- 31:32Speaker 3: yelling me when I dominate the comtry, I hear a
- 31:35Speaker 3: lot of I.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Hear a lot of people, you know, criticizing Elliott Wolf. Well,
- 31:39Speaker 2: you know, the common factor in all these drafts is
- 31:41Speaker 2: Elliot Wolf. But I firmly believe that he's following orders
- 31:45Speaker 2: from above and.
- 31:48Speaker 3: And that might be one little thing that I was holding. Okay,
- 31:50Speaker 3: might might you might have uncovered.
- 31:52Speaker 2: So I think, you know, we'll see, we'll see what
- 31:54Speaker 2: happens with that situation. But like if if you don't
- 31:59Speaker 2: have that, you know, I don't know, buttoned up you know,
- 32:04Speaker 2: philosophy of here's the type of team, here's the type
- 32:08Speaker 2: of football we want to play. It makes it tough
- 32:10Speaker 2: on your talent evaluators. What am I evaluating for?
- 32:14Speaker 7: Right, you know?
- 32:15Speaker 9: And that's why I need to end this year feeling
- 32:17Speaker 9: positive about the draft picks. I mean, I think to
- 32:20Speaker 9: Paul's point, last year, you ended last year you didn't
- 32:23Speaker 9: feel great about them. I mean, maybe we felt had
- 32:25Speaker 9: some positivity going into the season, and maybe came the season.
- 32:28Speaker 3: People were over the top. It was a bang of
- 32:31Speaker 3: a draft class. I'm already seeing now people are tweeting
- 32:34Speaker 3: that it looks like all the draft picks are going
- 32:36Speaker 3: to make it. I don't think that that will be
- 32:38Speaker 3: the case because I think we haven't found out. I
- 32:40Speaker 3: think there's still like another half dozen or so guys
- 32:43Speaker 3: to get cut. But that to me, doesn't make it
- 32:45Speaker 3: a good draft class. No, if all your rookies make it,
- 32:49Speaker 3: that's to me. That's especially when you have no baseline,
- 32:52Speaker 3: And it.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Also could be an indication of where the status of
- 32:56Speaker 2: your team now if everybody's making it, Like.
- 32:59Speaker 3: If you have four guys that start or that play
- 33:03Speaker 3: key roles and they play well, then that's a good
- 33:06Speaker 3: draft class. Right Like, I don't care if you know,
- 33:09Speaker 3: all these guys end up making it. Initially, first of all,
- 33:11Speaker 3: it's a little deceiving too. You have a kicker and
- 33:13Speaker 3: a long snapper. I mean, they gotta make it. Those
- 33:16Speaker 3: guys are gonna make it. But you know what, what
- 33:19Speaker 3: is I go back to, like right at the top,
- 33:25Speaker 3: if Will Campbell is just a tackle, is that a
- 33:29Speaker 3: great draft class? Or if he's like a pro Bowl player? Okay,
- 33:33Speaker 3: now you know you get him and you get Henderson's
- 33:35Speaker 3: it looks like a playmaker. Kyle Williams. We really don't
- 33:37Speaker 3: know yet about Kyle Williams. We haven't really seen a
- 33:40Speaker 3: ton from him. But if he's contributing in like you
- 33:43Speaker 3: remember Malcolm Mitchell as a as a rookie, you know, like, Okay,
- 33:47Speaker 3: there's one, two, three, first three rounds, right, you got
- 33:51Speaker 3: contributing players that are playing at a pretty good level.
- 33:54Speaker 3: That's a good draft class.
- 33:55Speaker 4: And it looks like Woodson is going to be a
- 33:57Speaker 4: contributor to Yeah.
- 33:58Speaker 3: I think he's playing. I put him in the second category,
- 34:02Speaker 3: like I expect him to be playing. I don't know
- 34:04Speaker 3: how well we'll play. I haven't seen anything from him
- 34:07Speaker 3: a summer.
- 34:08Speaker 4: He does a lot of things on the back end.
- 34:10Speaker 3: You know, things that I don't see.
- 34:12Speaker 2: But you're not a ballmer, Paul.
- 34:14Speaker 3: But that wasn't That wasn't for him. That was just
- 34:17Speaker 3: in general. It's like that's what they're selling, So I'm
- 34:20Speaker 3: not buying everything that they're selling. Let's put it that way.
- 34:24Speaker 3: A little cya going on with Elliott Wolfe.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I don't think that, I hear you, like, I don't
- 34:30Speaker 4: think Craig Woodson's going to be an impact player on
- 34:33Speaker 4: the ball, right, But I think he's going to be.
- 34:36Speaker 4: He's going to be in the ripe spots and he's
- 34:38Speaker 4: going to be positionally sound. He's going to cover ground
- 34:40Speaker 4: back there, and he's going to do the things that
- 34:42Speaker 4: they ask him to do. I just like Harmon, Sure,
- 34:45Speaker 4: like Deron Harmon, Like I is he going to be
- 34:49Speaker 4: Earl Thomas and have a bunch of interceptions and plays
- 34:51Speaker 4: on the football. Probably not. But do you need those
- 34:54Speaker 4: types of guys?
- 34:55Speaker 2: Not everyone can be.
- 34:58Speaker 3: I don't need Devin McCarty types. If you're going to
- 35:01Speaker 3: be that guy, you're not going to be. But if
- 35:04Speaker 3: you're not going to necessarily be that. But he wasn't
- 35:06Speaker 3: really a Pro Bowl safety. He was more of a
- 35:07Speaker 3: Pro Bowl early in his career. If if you're going
- 35:09Speaker 3: to be like a non playmaker back there you're just
- 35:12Speaker 3: going to always be in the right spot. Yeah, I
- 35:14Speaker 3: want I want Devin mccordy.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Yeah, we all did we all do?
- 35:18Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 35:18Speaker 3: Absolutely, Yeah, I want you to be like that. Like
- 35:20Speaker 3: to Evans's point, like there's things that Devin mccordy did
- 35:23Speaker 3: that you didn't always notice, but he was always.
- 35:25Speaker 2: You noticed it when he wasn't on the field right.
- 35:27Speaker 3: And I noticed that they almost never gave up those
- 35:30Speaker 3: over the top kind of place. Yeah, if that's what's
- 35:32Speaker 3: happening with Craig Woodson, then I'll gladly sit here and say,
- 35:35Speaker 3: well he's that kind of a player.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Okay, eight five five Pats five hundred is the hot line.
- 35:40Speaker 3: I haven't seen that in the preseason game or in
- 35:42Speaker 3: the practice.
- 35:43Speaker 2: It's hard to see anything in the preseason.
- 35:45Speaker 3: I watched practice, though I can see a lot.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Podcast at Patriots dot Com is the email address. Let's
- 35:50Speaker 2: get to the phones. Remember we're going to be talking
- 35:53Speaker 2: to Gary Myers in the second half of the show.
- 35:56Speaker 3: What's that I'm just talking to having over here? We're
- 35:58Speaker 3: having about you pointed at me, So remind me of
- 36:01Speaker 3: that line, what line about? Yeah, it's hard to see
- 36:03Speaker 3: anything in the press, it is it is. I don't
- 36:06Speaker 3: know what she's something.
- 36:08Speaker 2: You know, during the Brady years receiver rarely did they
- 36:11Speaker 2: have a winning preseason, even when they were at four games.
- 36:13Speaker 3: We're not talking about wins and losses. We're talking about
- 36:16Speaker 3: the personal.
- 36:16Speaker 2: I'm talking about like, how many times during the Brady
- 36:20Speaker 2: years we'd watch a preseason game. Boy, are twos and
- 36:22Speaker 2: threes aren't as good as their twos and threes? Right?
- 36:25Speaker 2: We said that a lot.
- 36:27Speaker 3: I'm sure I did. I don't know we did. I
- 36:29Speaker 3: don't really. I haven't really cared about the preseason in
- 36:31Speaker 3: all long.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Okay, that's my point.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Twenty five years, that's my point.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Maybe they've cared about it a little longer.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Billy's if you talk about joint practices, I think that's
- 36:41Speaker 2: more valid. Uh, Billy's in Rentham. What's up, Billy Hey,
- 36:48Speaker 2: Billy Hey?
- 36:51Speaker 3: Yes, turn it up.
- 36:55Speaker 10: Matt he is? Is he an IR guy? Or he
- 37:02Speaker 10: fifty three main guy? A practice quad or.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Carel Jennings?
- 37:06Speaker 9: No? No, yeah, he got he got hurt, and we
- 37:08Speaker 9: haven't really seen much of him, so I'm not sure
- 37:10Speaker 9: where that puts him right now. But I liked him
- 37:13Speaker 9: last summer. I saw more of them last summer. He
- 37:14Speaker 9: never really jumped out to me this year like he
- 37:16Speaker 9: did last year. He kind of ran hard last year.
- 37:19Speaker 9: But yeah, he's a big question mark for me. I
- 37:21Speaker 9: wouldn't be surprised to see him sick on the practice squad,
- 37:24Speaker 9: but I don't.
- 37:24Speaker 7: I haven't seen.
- 37:25Speaker 9: Anything to think that he's going to push for fifty
- 37:27Speaker 9: three spot. Yeah, yeah, yeah, those guys probably practice squads though,
- 37:35Speaker 9: I think.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Yeah I did. Did they keep four running backs? I
- 37:39Speaker 4: think is one thing that was sort of circled on
- 37:42Speaker 4: my because I think Gleann Larrison was going to make
- 37:45Speaker 4: the team field stayed healthy, My guy, yeah, got hurt.
- 37:50Speaker 4: I think he was going to make the team. So
- 37:53Speaker 4: do they have to do they pivot to a different
- 37:56Speaker 4: running back? I think there's reports out there that it's
- 37:59Speaker 4: not going to be hasty that Tasty was was released.
- 38:01Speaker 3: So and certainly to Billy's point, if Terrell Jennings is
- 38:05Speaker 3: on the fifty three man roster, I think Evan's right,
- 38:07Speaker 3: that was a sign that land Larrison probably would have
- 38:09Speaker 3: made the team. Now if they stick with three, then
- 38:11Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Let's go to Christian. He's going to behave today. Christian
- 38:16Speaker 2: in La, what's up? Oh, what's going on over there?
- 38:21Speaker 2: What are you doing? I can't hear you. It's hard.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Are you better?
- 38:29Speaker 3: Now?
- 38:30Speaker 10: You better? Now?
- 38:32Speaker 2: We keep talking, keep talking of all.
- 38:40Speaker 10: Bradberry thing, but wait instead of sitting in reserve.
- 38:47Speaker 2: It's hard to hear you. Sorry, Christian, You've got a
- 38:49Speaker 2: bad connection.
- 38:50Speaker 3: It's calling from an uber that car from underwater.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's hard.
- 38:55Speaker 4: Something about Bradberry. I heard that.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 38:59Speaker 4: Bradberry's on the team and he's gonna be the starting
- 39:01Speaker 4: center and we're gonna.
- 39:02Speaker 7: See how it goes and you will like it.
- 39:05Speaker 4: That's the Bradbury analysis. Like he's gonna play, he's gonna start.
- 39:09Speaker 4: If it goes poorly, I think it could get interesting.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Maybe Ben Brown goes into the starting lineup, maybe Jared
- 39:14Speaker 4: Wilson bumps over the center and something like that.
- 39:18Speaker 2: But they're gonna roll with Bradbury for now, all right,
- 39:22Speaker 2: Brentson Reno, Hey, Brent.
- 39:25Speaker 10: Hey, guys, you're talking about draft classes.
- 39:27Speaker 11: I'm want to shout out to the boss man Frey
- 39:29Speaker 11: Kurs for Ironhawks Audio getting shop.
- 39:32Speaker 10: Well, love it great, pick. I would like to you
- 39:36Speaker 10: and I'll take this off the air. Can you guys
- 39:39Speaker 10: throw down? On Madden rating for what you like, see
- 39:41Speaker 10: this team as right.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Now, throw out a Madden rating for every team? Is
- 39:46Speaker 2: that what you said?
- 39:47Speaker 4: Just a Patriots like the overall team Madden rating or
- 39:51Speaker 4: like player Madden rating?
- 39:53Speaker 10: Yeah, Like, I mean, do you think that we're like
- 39:55Speaker 10: sitting in the seventies.
- 39:57Speaker 2: I couldn't even know what that means.
- 39:58Speaker 4: I like, so I don't know each team, all thirty
- 40:00Speaker 4: two teams gets an overall grade.
- 40:03Speaker 2: From matter what's high? Who's high?
- 40:05Speaker 4: Like ninety nine is the high?
- 40:07Speaker 2: Ninety nine is high? Does anyone happen ninety nine?
- 40:09Speaker 7: No?
- 40:09Speaker 2: Okay, now what's the highest team?
- 40:12Speaker 4: Probably in the high nineties. But ninety nine to ninety
- 40:15Speaker 4: nine club is like a player thing. But that's like
- 40:18Speaker 4: the four or five best players in the NFL get
- 40:20Speaker 4: rated ninety nine. I think this year it's Lamar, Josh, Allen, Miles, Garrett. Yeah,
- 40:27Speaker 4: so what if you're an win team, usually probably like
- 40:32Speaker 4: seventy eight.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Okay, that's what it is.
- 40:34Speaker 4: You're going to put an exact number for you? Yeah,
- 40:37Speaker 4: usually I will, like for what it's worth, like Madden.
- 40:41Speaker 4: Typically they don't. They're kind of polite about it, like
- 40:46Speaker 4: their scale is not like it's not like, you know,
- 40:49Speaker 4: the team they think is going to pick number one
- 40:50Speaker 4: overall is like a forty, and then like the team
- 40:53Speaker 4: they think that's gonna win the Super Bowl is like
- 40:55Speaker 4: a ninety eight. Right, It's usually like the team that
- 40:58Speaker 4: they think are the worst in the league, girl, like
- 41:00Speaker 4: a seventy. You know, they're kind of nice about it.
- 41:03Speaker 4: So that's Madden. There's your Maden minute.
- 41:07Speaker 7: My son kills me in mad and it's so frustrated.
- 41:09Speaker 4: That's embarrassing.
- 41:10Speaker 7: Kills me.
- 41:11Speaker 9: And I'm like trying to run like plays and stuff,
- 41:13Speaker 9: and he just knows how to work the controller and
- 41:14Speaker 9: get go to the guy that he needs to get
- 41:16Speaker 9: and like picks off every pass.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Half the battle is learning the Controller's like learning to
- 41:21Speaker 2: do without looking at it.
- 41:22Speaker 9: You know, I'm getting all cocky. I'm like, oh, I'm
- 41:24Speaker 9: gonna hit you with the blitz right here, and he's
- 41:25Speaker 9: just like touchdown.
- 41:27Speaker 4: Yeah No, that's like second not being having to look
- 41:29Speaker 4: at the controllers like second nature for us.
- 41:31Speaker 9: Like that's like, no, whenever I throw a pass, he
- 41:33Speaker 9: switches to the cornerback and he breaks on it and
- 41:35Speaker 9: like picks it off every single time.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Like I can't.
- 41:37Speaker 7: Guys can't get open.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Control, because if you could, if you could operate a
- 41:46Speaker 2: controller like you do a remote, unbeatable.
- 41:51Speaker 3: I was not very good at Madden. My kids showed
- 41:55Speaker 3: me how to play like enough to get a playoff,
- 41:58Speaker 3: and then they just like destroyed it. I would They're
- 42:00Speaker 3: just going to keep fifteen years ago, like I.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Remember the Titans.
- 42:05Speaker 12: You know.
- 42:05Speaker 4: He says that we run the same three plays. It's like, no, okay,
- 42:08Speaker 4: we just keep running them. That's Madden. Like you can't
- 42:10Speaker 4: if you're going in there and you're trying to like
- 42:12Speaker 4: scroll through the pages and all these playbooks like all
- 42:16Speaker 4: this stuff. No, what you gotta do is you got
- 42:18Speaker 4: to find like the one team that you really like
- 42:21Speaker 4: playing with, and then find like two or three plays
- 42:24Speaker 4: that really work with that offense. Like for me, it was,
- 42:27Speaker 4: you know, Gronk on the corner route and you have
- 42:30Speaker 4: like Veren or White releasing into the flat and you'd
- 42:32Speaker 4: high low the defender out there, and you just like
- 42:36Speaker 4: it would just grind, it would just kill. And like
- 42:39Speaker 4: I could run that play one hundred times in a
- 42:41Speaker 4: row and nobody could stop it because the.
- 42:43Speaker 3: Computer got the defense spinning and never and if you
- 42:47Speaker 3: run the.
- 42:48Speaker 4: Ball and Madden are you punt and Madden yourf Don't
- 42:51Speaker 4: do that? Yeah, don't do that.
- 42:53Speaker 3: That's it. That's that's that's a little bit more than
- 42:56Speaker 3: a Madden minute right there.
- 42:57Speaker 2: You Mike would give up the all in three downs
- 43:00Speaker 2: just so we could go back to play.
- 43:01Speaker 9: Now.
- 43:02Speaker 7: I love I love you know.
- 43:04Speaker 4: It's just like people that you played in that it's
- 43:06Speaker 4: like fourth down and they're like, we're gonna play field
- 43:09Speaker 4: position here. It's like, what are you doing? It's a
- 43:11Speaker 4: video game.
- 43:14Speaker 2: David Bethlehem would like an autopsy of the twenty twenty
- 43:18Speaker 2: drafts where the traite priority pour? Did scouts mess up?
- 43:22Speaker 2: Did Belichick ignore input?
- 43:25Speaker 12: Why?
- 43:25Speaker 3: Twenty twenty?
- 43:26Speaker 7: The twenty twenties, Oh yeah, twenty twenty, So.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Why were they so bad?
- 43:31Speaker 4: There's a lot to unpacked.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Yeah, what's the autopsy?
- 43:34Speaker 3: I mean, there's probably no simple answer. But I do
- 43:37Speaker 3: feel Bill like the whole notion of identifying the players
- 43:43Speaker 3: you want and that that fit you. I think part
- 43:46Speaker 3: of the problem was that those guys were no longer
- 43:49Speaker 3: as effective in the in the current game. He's looking for,
- 43:54Speaker 3: you know, bigger guys to be stout in two gap
- 43:58Speaker 3: and a lot of other team teams are sort of
- 44:02Speaker 3: transitioning to smaller, quicker, you know, more athletic deep defenders,
- 44:08Speaker 3: and at the same time you're looking to exploit those
- 44:12Speaker 3: guys a little bit on offense.
- 44:14Speaker 12: You know.
- 44:15Speaker 3: The playmaker thing. I mean, it speaks for itself with
- 44:17Speaker 3: Belichick's drafts, like when was the last like real playmaker
- 44:20Speaker 3: he was able to acquire?
- 44:21Speaker 8: Fred Gary is ready to go.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Okay, all right, well listen, we won't make them hold on. Gary.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Myers is on the line, and Gary is coming out
- 44:32Speaker 2: on September sixteenth with Brady versus Belichick. I've got that
- 44:37Speaker 2: right here. I've read it, Paul has read it. Gary.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
- 44:42Speaker 8: How you doing, guys, Thanks for having me on.
- 44:44Speaker 2: It's Paul Pirello, Evan Lazarre, Mike Dusseau, myself, Fred Kirsch.
- 44:49Speaker 2: First of all, congratulations on the book.
- 44:52Speaker 8: Thanks a lot. It was It was really a lot
- 44:54Speaker 8: of fun to research and write it.
- 44:56Speaker 13: And you know, I've told people that, you know, although
- 44:59Speaker 13: I was working in New York all those years, I
- 45:03Speaker 13: cover an awful lot of Patriots games, so I felt
- 45:06Speaker 13: like I'd lived through the whole twenty years like people
- 45:09Speaker 13: in New England did, and met a lot of people
- 45:12Speaker 13: made a lot of contexts and you know, hopefully put
- 45:14Speaker 13: together a book that people will enjoy reading.
- 45:17Speaker 2: So a lot of these books, these retrospective books, you know,
- 45:20Speaker 2: we go in hoping to learn new things, which even
- 45:23Speaker 2: I've been with the team for over thirty years, I
- 45:25Speaker 2: think I learned some new things. And we can get
- 45:27Speaker 2: into that in a little bit. But what did you
- 45:29Speaker 2: learn in the process of writing this book.
- 45:37Speaker 13: That's a good question. Let me think about that one
- 45:38Speaker 13: for one second. I think the thing that really stood
- 45:43Speaker 13: out to me was that people have tended to forget
- 45:50Speaker 13: with Belichick's influence was on Brady early in his career,
- 45:56Speaker 13: because it surely seemed over the last ten years of
- 45:59Speaker 13: the dynasty, and I think it's you know, two distinct
- 46:03Speaker 13: ten year dynasties in which they won three Super Bowls
- 46:05Speaker 13: in each of the ten years. But I think in
- 46:07Speaker 13: the last ten years it was clearly Brady's team, and
- 46:10Speaker 13: he was a dominant contributor and personality of the team.
- 46:16Speaker 13: But you know, early on, like I said, I think
- 46:21Speaker 13: when people are starting to evaluate the twenty years together,
- 46:24Speaker 13: they're forgetting that Tom was a six round pick and
- 46:27Speaker 13: he hadn't gotten drafted by Belichick. Hem and not have
- 46:30Speaker 13: been drafted, and Bill kept him as a fourth string quarterback.
- 46:34Speaker 8: And then the following year.
- 46:35Speaker 13: Everybody knows that Bledsoe got hurt and he was ready
- 46:39Speaker 13: to come back two months later, and Bill kept and
- 46:42Speaker 13: stuck with Tom. And I think Belichick deserves a lot
- 46:46Speaker 13: of credit for all those things I just mentioned, but
- 46:48Speaker 13: I think it kind of gets lost.
- 46:51Speaker 8: In the overall evaluation of the Patriots accomplishments.
- 46:56Speaker 13: And I think that's that's what I really took out
- 46:58Speaker 13: of this, is that with all people I spoke with,
- 47:02Speaker 13: it's oh, you know, the ones who said it was
- 47:04Speaker 13: clearly Tom and I used to play devil's advocate for
- 47:09Speaker 13: a little bit, you know, I was saying, well, what
- 47:12Speaker 13: about this and what about that? And how it all
- 47:14Speaker 13: got started? And you know, doesn't Belichick deserve credit for that?
- 47:18Speaker 13: And you, oh, yeah, you know, we've kind of forgot
- 47:20Speaker 13: about that stuff. So I think, again, the overall big
- 47:25Speaker 13: picture tends to overshadow the early years of the Brady
- 47:31Speaker 13: Belichick relationship.
- 47:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you mentioned you talked to you know, you had
- 47:35Speaker 3: a lot of interviews in this book, and you talk
- 47:37Speaker 3: to a lot of different people. Did anybody I assume
- 47:40Speaker 3: that some of these people you didn't really have much
- 47:42Speaker 3: of a relationship beforehand. Did anybody really stick out to
- 47:45Speaker 3: you as being really insightful in terms of their analysis?
- 47:51Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 47:52Speaker 13: And I'm going to give you a name, and you're
- 47:53Speaker 13: going to say, how did you not know that? But
- 47:56Speaker 13: I didn't really know Devin mccordy before I sat down
- 47:59Speaker 13: with him. I had breakfast with him one morning in
- 48:01Speaker 13: New Jersey, uh, you know, a year and a half
- 48:03Speaker 13: ago whatever, And I had heard from uh, you know,
- 48:09Speaker 13: Aaron Salkin and the Patriots PR Department. When I was
- 48:13Speaker 13: asking him for his recommendations on some guys that I
- 48:15Speaker 13: didn't know, you know, who would be good for me
- 48:17Speaker 13: to get to get together with.
- 48:20Speaker 8: He said that Devon was at the top of his list.
- 48:22Speaker 13: And I'd come away blown away by what a great
- 48:24Speaker 13: guy he was and how smart he was and insightful.
- 48:27Speaker 8: And I think Aaron even underestimated Devin.
- 48:32Speaker 13: He's one of the I've gotten to know him really
- 48:34Speaker 13: well in the time since I interviewed him, and we've
- 48:37Speaker 13: gotten together a few times, you know, all in the
- 48:40Speaker 13: forty years I've covered the league.
- 48:42Speaker 8: I mean, I put him in my top.
- 48:43Speaker 13: Five of guys that I really really like a lot,
- 48:46Speaker 13: and he's just a great guy and he's really smart,
- 48:49Speaker 13: and I'm not surprised he's doing so well on television
- 48:53Speaker 13: and you know, on top of a lot, obviously he
- 48:55Speaker 13: was a great player.
- 48:57Speaker 8: Voted a captain in only his second year is pretty
- 49:00Speaker 8: unusual for a team that was, you know, filled with veterans.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:04Speaker 3: Absolutely, I'm sure you know that he and I are
- 49:06Speaker 3: colleagues on the paper the Patriots preseason games. So yeah,
- 49:10Speaker 3: Devn and I are pretty tight. Yeah, absolutely, Yeah.
- 49:13Speaker 8: I mean you're lucky because I really enjoy him a lot.
- 49:17Speaker 3: He's great.
- 49:18Speaker 2: One of the things I learned Gary, and you know,
- 49:20Speaker 2: I don't want to give away your conclusion. Let people
- 49:23Speaker 2: read it and read that for themselves. But one of
- 49:26Speaker 2: the things I learned, I don't I didn't know that
- 49:29Speaker 2: when Parcels, when Kraft bought the team, that Parcels had
- 49:34Speaker 2: asked if maybe Tim Mahra could be hired as sort
- 49:37Speaker 2: of a go between what like, I had no idea
- 49:40Speaker 2: about that.
- 49:41Speaker 13: Yeah, it wasn't so much to be hired. He wanted
- 49:44Speaker 13: to craft to sell one percent of the team to
- 49:47Speaker 13: Tim Mahra. You know, Tim was Bill's confident with the Giants.
- 49:51Speaker 13: Now Bill had a great relationship with Willing Timara, but
- 49:54Speaker 13: he was really close to Tim Marhra and he felt
- 49:57Speaker 13: that Tim could be kind of the buffer between him
- 50:03Speaker 13: and Craft and suggested to him. I don't know how
- 50:06Speaker 13: deep into the Craft ownership that happened, but it wasn't
- 50:09Speaker 13: very long that he went to Craft and said, you know,
- 50:12Speaker 13: I got this great idea. You know, why don't you
- 50:15Speaker 13: sell one percent to Tim Mayer. You know, he's my guy,
- 50:18Speaker 13: and then we can communicate through him. And Kraft goes, no,
- 50:21Speaker 13: I'm not doing that. I don't want anybody between you
- 50:24Speaker 13: and me. I want us to have that kind of relationship.
- 50:27Speaker 13: And Bill just never embraced Craft, which you guys know
- 50:30Speaker 13: because after four years the relationship kind of disintegrated and
- 50:36Speaker 13: Bill was gone. But I think that's something they both
- 50:40Speaker 13: come to regret. But just the fact that Bill wanted
- 50:43Speaker 13: to bring in his own guy into ownership tells you
- 50:47Speaker 13: all you need to know about how Bill felt about
- 50:49Speaker 13: Craft in the early years.
- 50:50Speaker 3: I wanted to stick on the Parcels thing because one
- 50:53Speaker 3: of the things that stood out to me when reading
- 50:55Speaker 3: it was the story of when Parcels originally left the Giants,
- 50:59Speaker 3: and you had sort of explained how, and I remember,
- 51:03Speaker 3: you know, so what, I was just out of college
- 51:05Speaker 3: when this happened, and I sort of remember, but I
- 51:07Speaker 3: wasn't in the business yet or anything like that, so
- 51:09Speaker 3: I didn't know all the details. I always felt Parcels
- 51:12Speaker 3: left the Giants late, you know, when he stepped down,
- 51:16Speaker 3: and it was after Belichick had already accepted the Cleveland job,
- 51:19Speaker 3: and I kind of took that out as well. He
- 51:21Speaker 3: obviously didn't want Belichick to replace him. But you sort
- 51:24Speaker 3: of explained how George Young had always said that Belichick
- 51:27Speaker 3: would never be the Giants head coach.
- 51:30Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, Parcels towards the end of the nineteen
- 51:34Speaker 13: ninety season went to George Young and said, do you
- 51:38Speaker 13: want me to do everything I can to keep Belichick
- 51:41Speaker 13: and or Tom Coughlin because you know, Tom then went
- 51:45Speaker 13: to Boston College and stayed the rest of the season
- 51:48Speaker 13: with the Giants, and Belichick got hired, you know, quickly
- 51:51Speaker 13: after the Giants beat the Bills in a Super Bowl,
- 51:53Speaker 13: and George told him.
- 51:54Speaker 8: No, let him both go if they want to go.
- 51:57Speaker 13: And Bill goes, but I'm not sure what I'm doing
- 51:59Speaker 13: next year, And George said, no, that's okay, and that's
- 52:02Speaker 13: because he had Ray Hanley in mind, the running back
- 52:05Speaker 13: coach that nobody ever really knew much about. But he
- 52:10Speaker 13: was very similar to George. You know, they're both very
- 52:15Speaker 13: you know, professorial types that would say kind of eggheads,
- 52:18Speaker 13: and George felt he was.
- 52:19Speaker 8: Ray Hanley was a kindred spirit. Although nobody had any idea.
- 52:24Speaker 13: That he did anything for the Giants other than he
- 52:26Speaker 13: was really helpful of parcels in the game management because
- 52:32Speaker 13: he was a card counter in Vegas and he actually
- 52:34Speaker 13: got thrown out of Vegas to doing that. So he's
- 52:36Speaker 13: great with numbers and so managing the clock in the
- 52:39Speaker 13: last few minutes of the game, it was it came
- 52:42Speaker 13: naturally to him and that was his biggest contribution. So
- 52:47Speaker 13: when Belichick left, you know, Kaflan had already decided to
- 52:50Speaker 13: leave to go to BC, and then Bill didn't leave
- 52:53Speaker 13: until the end in the middle of May.
- 52:55Speaker 8: A lot of people thought that Bill did it to.
- 52:57Speaker 13: Screw over the Giants because he enjoyed didn't get along.
- 53:01Speaker 13: And that goes back to after bill S first season,
- 53:03Speaker 13: he was three twelve and one and George would have
- 53:07Speaker 13: hired Howard Schnellenberger to replace him, except Snollenburger turned it down.
- 53:11Speaker 13: Bill found out about it through Al Davis, who found
- 53:14Speaker 13: out about it through Jimmy the Greek and.
- 53:18Speaker 8: So Parcels always resented George.
- 53:20Speaker 13: After that, and I think that had something to do
- 53:23Speaker 13: with the fact that Belichick and George never got along.
- 53:28Speaker 13: So Belichick was never going to be the coach of
- 53:30Speaker 13: the Giants, I mean, taking the Cleveland job.
- 53:36Speaker 8: If he wanted.
- 53:36Speaker 13: I'm not even sure he would have survived the change
- 53:40Speaker 13: over to the staff to Ray Hanley, not that he
- 53:42Speaker 13: would have wanted to, but if he didn't get the
- 53:44Speaker 13: Cleveland job, I'm not sure where Bill would have been
- 53:47Speaker 13: coaching in nineteen ninety one.
- 53:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 53:49Speaker 2: The other thing I think I learned. I'm not sure
- 53:52Speaker 2: I knew this, but maybe I forgot. But you write
- 53:55Speaker 2: that the day that Brady went over to tell Kraft
- 54:00Speaker 2: that you know this is it, I'm leaving that he
- 54:02Speaker 2: already had the Tampa Bajor. He had already decided that
- 54:06Speaker 2: he was going to the BUX. I don't think I
- 54:08Speaker 2: knew that.
- 54:09Speaker 8: Yeah, I think that.
- 54:10Speaker 13: Well, First of all, there weren't that many teams that
- 54:12Speaker 13: were going after Brady. If you remember, the Raiders were
- 54:17Speaker 13: somewhat interested, but Gruden put the kebash on that. Tom
- 54:20Speaker 13: actually said a couple of months ago that Chicago was
- 54:23Speaker 13: a possibility.
- 54:26Speaker 8: But Tampa was his hand picked spot.
- 54:32Speaker 13: Again, it wasn't like he had twenty teams after him,
- 54:35Speaker 13: and he had studied the roster and there was some
- 54:39Speaker 13: pieces in place in the front office there he's familiar with,
- 54:42Speaker 13: and they had a really good team. I mean they
- 54:45Speaker 13: were seven or nine in twenty nineteen with James Winston
- 54:49Speaker 13: throwing thirty interceptions to go along with thirty three touchdowns.
- 54:53Speaker 8: So it was clear they had a good team.
- 54:54Speaker 13: I think went seven games with a quarterback throwing thirty interceptions.
- 54:59Speaker 13: So he knew that it was a spot and it
- 55:01Speaker 13: was only a couple of days later that they made
- 55:03Speaker 13: it efficient.
- 55:04Speaker 9: Yeah, I got I got a question, how ahead, Mike, Hey, Gary,
- 55:08Speaker 9: you know you've written about the forty nine Ers, the Cowboys,
- 55:11Speaker 9: some of these other dynasties. Do we only look at
- 55:14Speaker 9: this Patriots dynasty as Belichick first Brady? Was there an
- 55:17Speaker 9: element of you know, Bill wash Montana or Staback you
- 55:21Speaker 9: know in Landry.
- 55:22Speaker 7: Do do we only look at this relationship on the
- 55:24Speaker 7: Patriots uniquely this way?
- 55:27Speaker 2: Meaning when we look at the like who was more
- 55:30Speaker 2: like like, are there debates about who was more? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:35Speaker 8: Well I think with the Niners, you know, there was.
- 55:42Speaker 13: Uh, you know, Walsh and Montana won three Super Bowls together,
- 55:46Speaker 13: but then the year after Walsh retired, Montana led the
- 55:52Speaker 13: Niners to another super Bowl with George Seffert, and that was,
- 55:56Speaker 13: you know, was one of the two or three of
- 55:58Speaker 13: the better teams that the Niners had. If I think
- 56:04Speaker 13: the reason that were kind of fixated on this somewhat
- 56:08Speaker 13: is because it was it was six championships together. Wals
- 56:11Speaker 13: in Montana was three, Landry and Starback was two, and
- 56:15Speaker 13: they also lost a couple of Super Bowls together. The
- 56:19Speaker 13: fact that Brady and Belichick was six and three, you know,
- 56:22Speaker 13: far two more super Bowl championships than Nolan. Brats are
- 56:26Speaker 13: one and two more than Montana one, and like I mentioned,
- 56:30Speaker 13: three of those were with Walsh. I think that, like
- 56:32Speaker 13: the body of work almost begs the question, and because
- 56:37Speaker 13: it also lasted twenty years, it begs the question of
- 56:40Speaker 13: which one of these two is more was more responsible?
- 56:44Speaker 8: And when when you think that Belichick is, you.
- 56:47Speaker 13: Know, arguably the best coaching NFL history and Brady is
- 56:51Speaker 13: inarguably the greatest quarterback in the NFL history. It's such
- 56:54Speaker 13: a unique circumstance when you have guys who were, you know,
- 56:57Speaker 13: at the very top of what they did, and they
- 57:00Speaker 13: did it together. I think it's only natural to try
- 57:03Speaker 13: to figure out which one was more responsible.
- 57:06Speaker 3: And despite all that, Gary, who did Jimmy Garoppolo say
- 57:09Speaker 3: it was responsible?
- 57:10Speaker 12: Right?
- 57:11Speaker 8: Yeah? I mean that was That's one of the best
- 57:13Speaker 8: quotes to have in the book.
- 57:14Speaker 13: When I asked Jimmy that question and he said it
- 57:16Speaker 13: was craft basically because he was putting out fires all
- 57:20Speaker 13: the time. I didn't use this quote that Jimmy says,
- 57:23Speaker 13: you know, one day, we'll get together for a beer
- 57:25Speaker 13: and I'll tell you all the inside stuff. I can't
- 57:27Speaker 13: tell you how many times I've heard that from players
- 57:29Speaker 13: and coaches. You know, just give me a few years
- 57:32Speaker 13: when I'm out of the game, and I'll tell you
- 57:33Speaker 13: all the good stuff.
- 57:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 57:35Speaker 8: Well, that's a retire they say, Now I still can't
- 57:37Speaker 8: tell you that.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. Gary is like, you know, people say,
- 57:40Speaker 2: you know, why did the Patriots dynasty break up? You
- 57:43Speaker 2: know what, what was the I think the real question
- 57:46Speaker 2: is how did they keep it together for twenty years?
- 57:49Speaker 2: Because you talk to guys like Jimmy Johnson, and you know,
- 57:52Speaker 2: once you start winning, everyone's got their handout and the
- 57:55Speaker 2: entitlement that goes on in any organization from the top down.
- 57:59Speaker 2: But to keep together for twenty years, I think Craft
- 58:02Speaker 2: did have a lot to do with that in terms
- 58:04Speaker 2: of whether it's putting out fires or just mending fences
- 58:08Speaker 2: between Belichick and Brady.
- 58:11Speaker 10: And all that.
- 58:11Speaker 2: So I can understand where Garoppolo is coming from when
- 58:15Speaker 2: he says that absolutely.
- 58:17Speaker 8: I think that's the.
- 58:19Speaker 13: Understated contribution of the dynasty is Robert Crafts role in it.
- 58:27Speaker 13: You know, besides all the market he's a great businessman,
- 58:30Speaker 13: as you all know, and he bought a franchise for
- 58:32Speaker 13: about two hundred million dollars that's probably worth close to
- 58:34Speaker 13: ten billion now. But a lot of it has to,
- 58:37Speaker 13: you know, be attributed to Belichick because the winning is
- 58:41Speaker 13: would increase the value of the team. I think Craft
- 58:46Speaker 13: did a lot, especially the last ten years, to keep
- 58:49Speaker 13: things together and to try to patch things up and
- 58:51Speaker 13: smooth things over between Craft and Belichick because you know,
- 58:55Speaker 13: I mean between Brady and Belichick, the more you win,
- 58:58Speaker 13: the harder it is to stay together. Al Davis always
- 59:02Speaker 13: told Parcells ten years as the max you can coach
- 59:05Speaker 13: in one place because your audience starts turning a.
- 59:08Speaker 8: Deaf ear to what your message is.
- 59:11Speaker 2: Now.
- 59:11Speaker 13: I think that's changed over the years because of free agency,
- 59:13Speaker 13: because there's a thirty percent roster turnover on the average
- 59:17Speaker 13: team every year, so you have a new audience every year.
- 59:20Speaker 13: But for them to stay as long together as long
- 59:23Speaker 13: as they did was remarkable, and for it to not
- 59:28Speaker 13: blow up until after twenty years together is unheard of.
- 59:34Speaker 8: And I think that the one question I didn't address
- 59:38Speaker 8: in the book.
- 59:39Speaker 13: You know, sometimes I guess kicked myself sometimes after it's
- 59:42Speaker 13: too late to change anything.
- 59:45Speaker 8: The one question I would have liked.
- 59:47Speaker 13: To explore, and maybe you guys have insight into this
- 59:50Speaker 13: is what would have happened if Belichick was the one
- 59:52Speaker 13: who went to Tampa and Tom stayed.
- 59:55Speaker 8: In New England.
- 59:56Speaker 13: So Tom tried to win with the roster that Belichick
- 59:59Speaker 13: had put together. Other would say Josh McDaniels as the
- 1:00:03Speaker 13: head coach, and Belichick went to Tampa with that roster,
- 1:00:07Speaker 13: and maybe he would have kept Jameis Winston, I don't.
- 1:00:10Speaker 14: Know, or just brought in somebody else. Yeah, with Winston, No,
- 1:00:16Speaker 14: you know, maybe he would have. Maybe he would what
- 1:00:18Speaker 14: Cam Newton to, uh right, right, Yeah, who knows?
- 1:00:23Speaker 13: But you know, could Belichick have if they were if
- 1:00:26Speaker 13: they were to switch spots then because one of the
- 1:00:29Speaker 13: quotes in the book from Belichick that he told me
- 1:00:31Speaker 13: was that, you know, Tom, they wouldn't have won it
- 1:00:35Speaker 13: in twenty twenty with Tom because the roster had you know,
- 1:00:38Speaker 13: fallen apart, uh to such an extent that he didn't
- 1:00:42Speaker 13: think Tom could win there. So but you know, in
- 1:00:46Speaker 13: what I would call the alternate Universe that I had
- 1:00:49Speaker 13: a chapter in the book about the old universe about
- 1:00:51Speaker 13: things that could have happened in NFL history but didn't.
- 1:00:53Speaker 13: I should have included this is would Belichick have won
- 1:00:57Speaker 13: in Tampa without Tom? And could Tom have won in
- 1:00:59Speaker 13: New England with out Belichick the way those two teams
- 1:01:02Speaker 13: were constructed.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: In I think I think if it's a it's a
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: fun discussion, But I think for Bill it would have
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: taken longer. He needs to build his team the way
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: he wonts.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: The answer is probably no for both. But I would
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: say that that same roster won twelve games with Brady
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: quarterback in the year before it was deteriorating all over
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: the place. We knew, we were all covering it at
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: the time. I don't think they were a championship contender
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: with even if Brady stayed, but they they wouldn't have
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: fallen apart like that with Brady.
- 1:01:31Speaker 13: If you remember, and you guys know this better than
- 1:01:34Speaker 13: I do, but if he ended twenty nineteen season, season
- 1:01:38Speaker 13: didn't the Patriots.
- 1:01:38Speaker 8: Was a home game to Miami. Oh yeah, first round.
- 1:01:46Speaker 13: Yeah, so it just continued the next week against against
- 1:01:50Speaker 13: Tennessee and the playoffs. You know, the arrow was pointing down.
- 1:01:53Speaker 13: But if they had won that game against Miami, who
- 1:01:55Speaker 13: knows what would have happened.
- 1:01:57Speaker 8: Yeah, I wouldn't have won the Super Bowl, but you
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: never know.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: But like I said, you know, when Vrabel came in here,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: he started, he starts he's bringing in his guys. When
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: Belichick first got to the Patriots, one of the first
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: things he did was start to bring in his guys like,
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: you know, Bobby Hamilton and Anthony Pleasant, you know, guys
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: that were his circle the wagon, guys like Parcels used
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: to call him. So I think Bill going to Tampa,
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: it wouldn't have been I think eventually he'd probably start winning.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: But I don't think it would have been immediately.
- 1:02:27Speaker 13: You have to remember this, in my opinion, at least
- 1:02:30Speaker 13: the Tampa roster in twenty twenty was much better than
- 1:02:33Speaker 13: the Patriots luster.
- 1:02:34Speaker 8: And to god, yes, all they needed was a quarterback.
- 1:02:37Speaker 13: They had a good defense, they had a really good
- 1:02:40Speaker 13: offensive line, they had two good receivers and Evans and Godwin,
- 1:02:44Speaker 13: they had some good tight ends that they just needed
- 1:02:47Speaker 13: a quarterback. Maybe they needed the greatest quarterback ever to win.
- 1:02:52Speaker 13: Maybe somebody a notch or two below wouldn't have won.
- 1:02:56Speaker 13: But I think I'm not sure that Belichick would have
- 1:02:58Speaker 13: had to turn over that roster.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: It'd be a culture shock for those guys under Bruce
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: arians and then going to Bill Belichick that would have
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: been like yeah, so I don't know, but Gary, I appreciate.

- 1:05:39Speaker 16: Plush today at practice Yeah, I think, uh yeah, really,
- 1:05:42Speaker 16: I think just keep on going, you know us first,
- 1:05:44Speaker 16: our defense. I think it's always great work, you know
- 1:05:46Speaker 16: with the guys that got over there, the different stuff
- 1:05:48Speaker 16: they do, and then really just us, you know, keep
- 1:05:51Speaker 16: working on communication, you know, knowing our rules for on
- 1:05:53Speaker 16: our rules and building chemistry on to get ready for
- 1:05:55Speaker 16: week one. I think, you know, I've been proud of
- 1:05:57Speaker 16: the guys last two days of you know, taking this
- 1:05:59Speaker 16: time you know to get better and not kind of
- 1:06:02Speaker 16: usually as a kind of relaxed week. I think we're
- 1:06:04Speaker 16: trying to you know, get after it and get ready
- 1:06:05Speaker 16: for We won.
- 1:06:09Speaker 13: Everything from the spring through the summer to now the
- 1:06:12Speaker 13: end of training camp.
- 1:06:13Speaker 16: Yeah, I think we've just been trying to buy in.
- 1:06:15Speaker 16: You know, Coach Rabel came here in mid clear from
- 1:06:17Speaker 16: day one, Hey, drop your we goes at the door.
- 1:06:19Speaker 16: We'll get here to work. We want guys to finish
- 1:06:21Speaker 16: and work hard and give effort. And I think, you
- 1:06:23Speaker 16: know we'll start to see that and build that and
- 1:06:25Speaker 16: just kind of keep working and bring it to the field,
- 1:06:26Speaker 16: you know, week one. So uh, I'm just trying to
- 1:06:28Speaker 16: do my part and try to come out here every
- 1:06:30Speaker 16: day and try to get better.
- 1:06:32Speaker 17: Being the quarterback makes you the most nervous right now
- 1:06:35Speaker 17: as you prepare for your first career Week one start.
- 1:06:38Speaker 16: Well, aspect of being the quarterback makes me most nervous.
- 1:06:41Speaker 16: I wanna say nerves. I think just just anxious to
- 1:06:43Speaker 16: get out there. We'll be in front of the home crowd,
- 1:06:45Speaker 16: hopefully good crowd. Nerves wise, I think you get nerve,
- 1:06:48Speaker 16: I get nervous, broout, you know, the same amount every
- 1:06:50Speaker 16: every game out there, I'm thinking, no matter, you know,
- 1:06:53Speaker 16: back to high school kind of the same. Not really nervous,
- 1:06:55Speaker 16: just jitters getting out there and kind of once you
- 1:06:57Speaker 16: get go into the game, I feel good and kind
- 1:07:00Speaker 16: of from here, just you know, getting ready for with
- 1:07:01Speaker 16: the new guys, kind of new guys playing with so
- 1:07:03Speaker 16: kind of building chemistry with them. It's probably i'd say
- 1:07:05Speaker 16: in a game like Setting Brother than that would stay nervous.
- 1:07:08Speaker 16: I think just more excited and anxious.
- 1:07:11Speaker 9: How would you describe the identity of this football team
- 1:07:14Speaker 9: or what we're going to see in.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: The regular season?
- 1:07:17Speaker 16: Yeah, I think, Uh, I think we're trying to build
- 1:07:20Speaker 16: a team that's bring it every play, you know, no
- 1:07:21Speaker 16: plays off, you know, no days off. And I think,
- 1:07:23Speaker 16: what coach, you know, I'm trying to build. What the
- 1:07:25Speaker 16: guys are trying to you'll give into is uh. You know,
- 1:07:27Speaker 16: if you're not gonna play hard and you know you
- 1:07:29Speaker 16: can mess up and do a mistake, we do it
- 1:07:31Speaker 16: at full speed. And I think we're trying to bring
- 1:07:33Speaker 16: that and you'll play hard and play hard on the
- 1:07:34Speaker 16: other team being good condition, and then you know from
- 1:07:36Speaker 16: there to try to execute, you know, in a situation
- 1:07:38Speaker 16: fal football. I think that's where we're preaching. You know,
- 1:07:40Speaker 16: so many games or one and lost by one score
- 1:07:42Speaker 16: and situations, so try to excel in that area and
- 1:07:44Speaker 16: from there just take care of the football and gives
- 1:07:47Speaker 16: a chance every week.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: I believe you've had the whole summer working with Josh
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: mc daniels. What's your level of excitement now kind of.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: The three preseason games a out of the way for
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: the next game is the you know, home of the
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: season opener.
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: So what's your level of excitement working.
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: With Yeah, I think I'm pumped up.
- 1:08:01Speaker 16: I think anytime you get a chance to go into
- 1:08:03Speaker 16: a game and you'll see how the game plan works.
- 1:08:05Speaker 16: And you can see a little bit in preseason, but
- 1:08:07Speaker 16: you know, now it's full go. You'll kind of game
- 1:08:09Speaker 16: plan a team and you know watching tape, you know,
- 1:08:11Speaker 16: with you with him in there and just you know,
- 1:08:13Speaker 16: seeing what he's seeing and try to be on the
- 1:08:15Speaker 16: same page. That's the funnest part. I think you're playing
- 1:08:17Speaker 16: the position of trying to You'll see something in the
- 1:08:19Speaker 16: film room on you know Monday or Tuesday go out
- 1:08:21Speaker 16: there and do in practice and executing the games. That's
- 1:08:23Speaker 16: kind of how the ritual goes, and it's it's it
- 1:08:26Speaker 16: feels good when you you know, see it on tape
- 1:08:27Speaker 16: and accomplish something. So just getting into the groove and
- 1:08:30Speaker 16: I think just having you know, uh, coordinator who trusts
- 1:08:33Speaker 16: me and you know, puts full trust and you know,
- 1:08:35Speaker 16: the guys and myself and go out there and have
- 1:08:37Speaker 16: some fun.
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: What the game planning process is going to be like, Yeah,
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: well we.
- 1:08:41Speaker 16: Got a little bit sensitive in preseason obviously different the
- 1:08:44Speaker 16: full week to kind of get going with the guys.
- 1:08:46Speaker 16: So I'm excited just trying to You'll be all in
- 1:08:50Speaker 16: the Raiders and take one week at a time and
- 1:08:51Speaker 16: then from here just try to you'll take the little
- 1:08:54Speaker 16: details and like I said, follow our rules and go
- 1:08:56Speaker 16: out there and kind of be instinctive and play hard.
- 1:09:00Speaker 17: Is it to you to get Stefan involved even on
- 1:09:04Speaker 17: the practice field and just you know, feeding him targets
- 1:09:07Speaker 17: and developing Yeah, you guys.
- 1:09:09Speaker 16: Shoot, he's a phenomenal player. You know what he can do,
- 1:09:12Speaker 16: and you know how much is you know ball he's
- 1:09:14Speaker 16: played and how many plays he's make. Just try to
- 1:09:16Speaker 16: give them give him the football and you know, whether
- 1:09:19Speaker 16: it's extra work with him or actually worked out of
- 1:09:21Speaker 16: practice from the film, but trying to he'll be on
- 1:09:23Speaker 16: the same page. And I think, you know, what's you know,
- 1:09:25Speaker 16: he's uh, he'll got one on one matchups or he
- 1:09:28Speaker 16: feels his own. He knows you know, coverage really well.
- 1:09:31Speaker 16: So I think you do a lot of things well.
- 1:09:33Speaker 16: So it's it's good for us to use him, you know,
- 1:09:35Speaker 16: as much as he's able to, you know, handle, And
- 1:09:37Speaker 16: I think it's excited to you know, get there and
- 1:09:40Speaker 16: you know, don't don't call footballs and then building the
- 1:09:42Speaker 16: chemistry and practice. I think we've got to kind of
- 1:09:45Speaker 16: built it, you know here lately, and I think just
- 1:09:46Speaker 16: kind of carry that into the season.
- 1:09:49Speaker 17: Is there any pressure on you he's a guy who's
- 1:09:51Speaker 17: obviously accomplished a lot in his career. Yeah, there's any
- 1:09:53Speaker 17: pressure on you as a young quarterback to make sure
- 1:09:54Speaker 17: he gets the ball, make sure he's he's feeling good
- 1:09:56Speaker 17: about where.
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: I wouldn't say pressure.
- 1:09:57Speaker 16: I think he knows, you know, he knows the plays,
- 1:10:00Speaker 16: and always try to tell the guys, hey, if you've
- 1:10:04Speaker 16: seen something, hey, you know, give me something on the
- 1:10:05Speaker 16: sideline or something like that. But I'm gonna try to
- 1:10:08Speaker 16: throw the guys that open. If he's opened a lot,
- 1:10:09Speaker 16: then he'll get the ball a lot.
- 1:10:10Speaker 9: So after the Minnesota game, at the first drive, he
- 1:10:14Speaker 9: had a couple of up high and said, I just
- 1:10:16Speaker 9: came out a little shoe stuff, you know, a little
- 1:10:17Speaker 9: player off.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: Do you have any strategies in mind for saying, right,
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: how can they get out there and just relax at
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: the beginning years, because it's not unique to you far
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: about it a lot of guys.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:30Speaker 16: I think just it's kind of like you know, back
- 1:10:31Speaker 16: in the day playing basketball, kind of find a you'll
- 1:10:34Speaker 16: find a layup before you start shooting threes. I think
- 1:10:36Speaker 16: just whether it's a good run or you know, with
- 1:10:38Speaker 16: the guys up front and the running backs, or maybe
- 1:10:41Speaker 16: easy completion. But other than that, I think it's just uh,
- 1:10:45Speaker 16: just getting out there, and I think that's part of it.
- 1:10:47Speaker 16: I think it's whether it's gonna be kind of the
- 1:10:49Speaker 16: jitters or gonna be fired up. That's more of what
- 1:10:51Speaker 16: it is. Just to kind of calm that. And I
- 1:10:54Speaker 16: think kind of use the guys around me as well.
- 1:10:56Speaker 16: I think use the guys around me to kind of
- 1:10:58Speaker 16: feel like Hey, you know if if if they're pump up,
- 1:11:02Speaker 16: I'm gonna get a little pumped up. But you know,
- 1:11:03Speaker 16: when I get out there, kind of be cool and
- 1:11:05Speaker 16: calm and collected.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: See I think you should get here, I think, yeah.
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm sure that'd be great.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure that'd be great.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Got down day tomorrow.
- 1:11:18Speaker 17: Have you detected any anxiousness in the locker room or
- 1:11:20Speaker 17: among the players as we approach it tomorrow.
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: Yeah, it's always a tough day.
- 1:11:24Speaker 16: You know, I really got to experience it, you know,
- 1:11:26Speaker 16: one time last year with the guys around the locker room.
- 1:11:29Speaker 16: Obviously you hear about it, and you have so many
- 1:11:31Speaker 16: guys out here that worked their butts off that are
- 1:11:33Speaker 16: kind of you'll fight and crawling to make the team,
- 1:11:35Speaker 16: and you know that, you know, it's news that obviously
- 1:11:39Speaker 16: they're unfortunate for them and unfortunate for us. Who you'll
- 1:11:42Speaker 16: build a relationship with them. And I remember the rookies,
- 1:11:44Speaker 16: I felt like all those guys are with me and
- 1:11:47Speaker 16: in training camp, and you know, coming out of rookie
- 1:11:49Speaker 16: Minnie camp and next thing, you know, like that, we
- 1:11:51Speaker 16: got down at ten or twelve lookers in the locker
- 1:11:53Speaker 16: room from thirty so it was tough for me to
- 1:11:55Speaker 16: you realize that's the nature of the business. And then
- 1:11:57Speaker 16: from there just a you'll pump those guys up if
- 1:12:01Speaker 16: you never know missing him again, you see, you know,
- 1:12:03Speaker 16: hasty back out here and guys like that, you never know.
- 1:12:06Speaker 16: The relationship's never over. And for those guys, just another
- 1:12:09Speaker 16: step in the journey and and try to stay in
- 1:12:10Speaker 16: touch with.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: Them and now great moments in.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: History.
- 1:12:18Speaker 18: By the way, speaking of Edelman, I'm a little worried
- 1:12:22Speaker 18: about him. Why he is too jacked Yeah, I mean
- 1:12:27Speaker 18: it's like he's become a body build.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: He's gonna get hurt.
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: He's gonna get hurt.
- 1:12:31Speaker 11: It's all edited.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: I think it's like, now that Tom's gone, I'm not
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: doing that TV twelve stretching anymore and lean muscle and
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: the like.
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: He's yeah, because that really kept it, really kept him
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: healthy in the past. He's he's really been durable.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: Veins are popping out, like he is jacked up.
- 1:12:50Speaker 11: He is just.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Thirsty on Instagram.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: It's like, come on, take it easy, jewels stuff.
- 1:12:55Speaker 17: I'm a little worried about his obsession with the short
- 1:12:57Speaker 17: shorts cut off.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Listen, if I look like him, I be nude.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: That's another great moment, all right.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: Back here, and Patriots make you Gary Myers for doing that.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: It's a good read, I would suggested, easy.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: It'll take you Patriots fans take it down memory lane too.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: Yep, it's a good read. And like I said, I
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: won't give away his conclusion, but you can probably guess
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: what it was. But but it's good stuff.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: If you're listening to his interview, you wouldn't guess what
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: it want.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: No, Yeah, Nate writes in from Connecticut. He's not calling in.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: He says, I'm emailing because the phone lines have been
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: down for me for some reason. I was really committed
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: to getting a calling to tell you guys, I'm going
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: back to school tomorrow and will be unable to call
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: in anymore unless I am sick on Tuesday or Thursday.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: I just assumed his mother has him on punishment. Yeah,
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: he's not allowed to use his phone.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: My hopefully not. Final question for you guys is what
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: do you guys think of the Jacoby Myers trade request.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: The big pattern we've noticed is when you request a trade,
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: you get paid. Is Jacoby looking to get paid or
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: does he really not want to be in the situation.
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: He's been in Vegas for the last few years. I'd
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: love to have him back in New England. He was
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: very productive and him paired with May is a match
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: made in heaven. I think it's all about money.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: Well, he is looking to get paid. Yeah, yep, yeah.
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: I don't think the conditions are like intolerable. I think
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: he's just They've tried to talk and I guess it
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: just hasn't gone anywhere. And he wants his money.
- 1:14:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: I think it's what's his stats, like he had a
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: thousand yards? I mean, he just he like.
- 1:14:36Speaker 7: Twenty twenty one, twenty twenty two.
- 1:14:37Speaker 9: I mean every quarterback that he's played with, he's been
- 1:14:41Speaker 9: productive and you can't knock that.
- 1:14:43Speaker 7: It's production is all the.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: Matters, player find space, does all those things. I'm Evan
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: and I talked about it a little bit off air.
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: I would take him back. I think he's a good
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: player and I was very high on Jacoby Myers never
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: wanted him to leave in the first place.
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: I'm sure right on.
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: I just feel I just feel like they have enough
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: of those kinds of receivers, you know, and Diggs is
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: obviously a higher end, you know, type of you know
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: kind of zone beater find space, you know, versatile to
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: beat Man and zone.
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: He doesn't change the equation for the Patriot.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: He's got Douglas in the slot. You got everybody's favorite Chisholm, right,
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: I mean another guy who finds space and you know,
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: you know, creates separation, you know underneath. I just don't
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: know how many of those guys you need.
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: Yeah, if your response to this is that just take
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: the talent and figure it out later, and I'd totally
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: a fair take to have on it. But when you
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: start of get into the minutia of it, Jacoby Myers
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: is a Z receiver. Stefan Diggs is a C receiver.
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: So if you trade for Jacoby Myers, one of those
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: guys is playing out a position, and I don't know
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: if they are, especially Digs at this point of his career.
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: I don't know if he's going to be productive playing
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: the X, like, I don't know if that's really going
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: to be a good.
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: Role for him. It's either Zo the slot, right, He's
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: not an outside.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: Right, So if you put him at the X, how
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: is Stefon Diggs really going to feel about that? Because
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: now the targets are going to be funneled someplace else,
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: and we'd all know that that role is the role
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: that gets the high volume in this offense. Essentially, what
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: I'm saying, they signed Digs to be Jacobe Myers right
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: like that day. Once they have redundancy, they're overlapping receivers.
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: So you could sit here and say, just take the
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: good receiver and we'll figure out all these problems later.
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: But I think it's more complicated than that with this
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: particular receiver in this particular offense.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: So Richard and Attleborough along the Meyers trade rumor type
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: of discussion, he says, I always felt that letting Jacoby
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: go was a favorite Bill gave to Josh to help
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: him in Las Vegas. I don't think it wasn't. No.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: He also wants to know has the Patriots considered creating
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: an official discord Do you guys know what we're talking
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: about the forums?
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: Uh, we have not considered that, but maybe an offline conversation.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: I'm not surprised that you like discord.
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: Discord's fun. It's uh, it's basically like it's kind of
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: like a newer Reddit, where like you have like live conversations.
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: So instead of posting to it and then people reacting.
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: You actually host like a Q and A for like
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: an hour on the Patriot Discord, so I would be
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: in there, Deuce could be in there, and the fans
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: could come in and ask questions in text form and
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: then we would like have an ongoing.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Reddit has that too? What are they call it?
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: On AM?
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: That's asked me anything? That's different?
- 1:17:52Speaker 12: Right?
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: But those are live?
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, but like that's that's the idea of it.
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: And they're pretty pop like and you have sort of
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: like you know, it's kind of like it's kind of
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: like kirsh words. Honestly, it's kind of like that where
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: it's like the same people kind of gather, you know,
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: every week and and that sort of thing. So, uh,
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: it could be something, but I don't know if we
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: would like.
- 1:18:17Speaker 9: Just call into the show here while we're sitting here
- 1:18:19Speaker 9: about you know, four to six hours a week where it.
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: Is for you know, people that that want a text
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: call in and right a lot of people now.
- 1:18:30Speaker 7: Sure at platforms.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: Cody in Indiana says today is a day of celebration.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: We finally got a good call from Christian in La
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: We got to hear him play the bongos underwater and
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: then Fred promptly hung up.
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: On Wow, there you go, stupid Uber driver. He's got
- 1:18:45Speaker 7: a call back and blame the Uber driver.
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: It was his fall, But like, is that important actually
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: have to call?
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: Like you're in an uber that's actually a Limo drives buddy,
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: but he's trying to die.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: Really disappointed. You're in an Uber and not a well,
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: it might have been an Uber X, it could be Excel.
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: He just gets the big one anyway.
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Colby has a quick over and undergame over under,
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: Drake may touchdown, passes twenty over, games started by digs
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: twelve over over.
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: If these any of these are under.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: That wins for the Patriots.
- 1:19:19Speaker 7: Eight over, I'm gonna nine.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: I just I stick my flagging nine under, staying just
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: because no, because I think it's the number. But it's over.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: But I said, push, okay, push push, Let's see a
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: better chance seven than nine okay?
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: Eight five five Pats five hundred is the hotline. Boston
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: Cream's on it. What's up, Boston Cream?
- 1:19:44Speaker 11: Hey guys, I got a little bit of a gripe
- 1:19:46Speaker 11: with Evan Good. Evans very smart, obviously know what's a lot,
- 1:19:52Speaker 11: Thank you, very good. Within his own lane, thank you.
- 1:19:55Speaker 11: That being said, Evan is a little bit of a
- 1:19:58Speaker 11: no at all. I'll give two examples here. There was
- 1:20:03Speaker 11: something like discussion about pop culture, and Evan asked Paul
- 1:20:09Speaker 11: how often he hangs around eighteen nineteen year old, which
- 1:20:12Speaker 11: I thought was quite funny, as I believe Paul is
- 1:20:14Speaker 11: the father of one, if not two of them.
- 1:20:20Speaker 12: That we know of.
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: It doesn't count.
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: Yeah, but do you think that around? I remember saying
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: that I don't either.
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it sounds like you though.
- 1:20:28Speaker 11: The second one was the conversation I think it was
- 1:20:31Speaker 11: last week about manual transmission vehicles. Evan was saying that
- 1:20:35Speaker 11: they still make manual transmission vehicles, which is true, and
- 1:20:40Speaker 11: he said they're usually paddleshift.
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: No, I said, now we've adapted to more paddle shifters
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: on sports cars especially.
- 1:20:49Speaker 8: Yeah. True.
- 1:20:49Speaker 11: But the question was do they still have a clutch?
- 1:20:52Speaker 11: He said, yeah, but they have paddle shift. There's taddle
- 1:20:55Speaker 11: shifting cars. You don't use a clutch and a paddleship.
- 1:20:57Speaker 10: That change here?
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: Okay, wow, got me bo.
- 1:21:04Speaker 10: I do have a question.
- 1:21:05Speaker 11: Oh, yes, the Patriots start five and oh or oh
- 1:21:11Speaker 11: and five?
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: What's more likely?
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: Better chance? And five?
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: I have to say that too.
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: Thanks, that's a real old school Andy Hart. Better chance
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: what I like?
- 1:21:25Speaker 7: Three and just paint the corner.
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: That's obviously. I don't think it's very I don't think
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: it's very like. I don't think it's very likely you're
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: going on and five.
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: But I.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: Don't know.
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: What's more likely.
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: They criticism, well, from certain was me. I'd be in
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: the corner, in the fetal position at all times.
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: That's not true. I take criticism. Well, listen to the
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: open every show from certain people. You know what I mean?
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: Yeah, certain people? Hey, you mean you people?
- 1:21:57Speaker 7: People?
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Try Darius and Louisville has some major gripe. There's a
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: lot of capital letters used in this email. Oh yeah,
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: he says a couple of things. I have to say. First,
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: can we stop comparing Vrabel and his staff to Mayo
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: and his staff. We all know how inexperienced Mayo and
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: his coaches worse, so it's not even a fair comparison.
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: How about we compare what Rabel is doing to what
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: Bill was doing for twenty years. That's a better comparison.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong, I believe in Vrabes, but to
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: annoy him, the next best things and sliced bread just
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: because he's doing better than Mayo is kind of ridiculous
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: in my opinion. Second thing that grinds my gears is
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: callers and emails that ask the same annoying question every time,
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: especially if you guys just talked about it. Just pay
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: attention to the show and your questions will be answered. Wow,
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: there you go. Or if he's talking about anyone in particular.
- 1:22:53Speaker 3: Some of the emails come in before we've actually talked
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: about it. In defending of the email a little bit different,
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: so you get like a question that maybe we we
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: hadn't talked about when he sent the email in, And yeah,
- 1:23:05Speaker 3: sometimes it can cross streams.
- 1:23:08Speaker 9: I think it's a fair comparison that I was thinking
- 1:23:09Speaker 9: a little bit about, you know, Bill saying when they
- 1:23:12Speaker 9: won in two thousand and one, they didn't really feel
- 1:23:13Speaker 9: like they had their team in place yet.
- 1:23:15Speaker 7: And you know, Paul, you mentioned some of the.
- 1:23:17Speaker 9: Veterans that he brought in that second year his guys,
- 1:23:20Speaker 9: and I think you've seen a little of that with
- 1:23:21Speaker 9: Rabel bringing in Robert Splaine. You know, the guys that
- 1:23:25Speaker 9: they know just feel like, well, Campbell was one of
- 1:23:27Speaker 9: his guys, even though we didn't play for him. But
- 1:23:28Speaker 9: I think you see some of the similar things, they're
- 1:23:30Speaker 9: still gonna have to you know, I use the example
- 1:23:32Speaker 9: of a Sante Samuel. Now you know, year three four,
- 1:23:35Speaker 9: maybe you have a third or fourth round cornerback waiting
- 1:23:37Speaker 9: in the wings that you know, you're.
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: Just calling Super Bowl. I'm not saying drafted. Will Care
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: been drafted, Matt. I'm not saying I've left. I'm just
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: I'm not saying. I'm just saying, you know, Anthony Pleasant
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: and Stefan Diegsteon Branch, Roman, Pfeiffer, Brobby Harnts, Robert Slaine.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: Do the math.
- 1:23:55Speaker 7: I mean, come on, win.
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: Trevor writes in we spent so much time in the
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: offseason talking about wide receiver and while we do still
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: need a true elite guy in the future, when looking
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: at our roster, it might be our deepest position. Paul
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: will laugh, but Chisholm is one of the few guys
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: who went out I hearn a spot the future. Paul, Well,
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: I'll read that again since I was interrupted.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Paul will laugh.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: But Chisholm is one of the few guys who went
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: out and earned a spot. And then Booty Hollins Douglas Diggs.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: Williams is probably the only room I don't feel terrible
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: about our fifth guy seeing the field. Funny how that
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: worked out so.
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: Real as quick though Kyle Williams is the fifth guy.
- 1:24:35Speaker 7: Kyle was back at practice.
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: Would I would sort of agree.
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: I think, like, I just don't feel great about the
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: first three.
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: The bar the bar was on the floor, like, let's
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: not get it twisted. But at the same time, I
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: kind of like the mix that they have, Like I
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: at least want to see what it looks like. I
- 1:24:55Speaker 4: but like, I kind of like the mix that they
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: have now going.
- 1:24:58Speaker 3: To be like Drake made to me, it's a going
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: to be about digs.
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: If you can go out there and like, you know,
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: if Terry McLaurin actually got traded, like obviously you would
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: want that type of player to add to this room.
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: But we were talking about Jacobe Myers a little while ago.
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: I kind of want to see what it looks like
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: with these four or five guys, because I do think
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: they compliment each other pretty well, and they have different
- 1:25:20Speaker 4: body types that can kind of you know, mix and
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: match a little bit. So again, I know the bar
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: wasn't very high, but this is one of the better
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: rooms that they've had in a while.
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: So we talked a little bit about how much or
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: a little you can glean from preseason. But are there
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: any indications that Josh McDaniels is going to get be
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: able to scheme guys open, like.
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: Man, I think so any better?
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but like we do we get that indication preseason
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: because I saw some guys like like whether or not
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: Drake sees them or not is a different quest. Minnesota,
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: we saw guys get open.
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: Yeah, taking the joint practices more, you can see that
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: kind of stuff because they're they're not they're not going
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: to show very much on the preseason tape because they
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: don't want to put it on film what they're what
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: they're doing. But in the in the joint practices, especially
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: against the Vikings, I think they did scheme some stuff open.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: Certainly like the one to Trayvon Henderson at the end
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: of the day, one that everybody's talked about for two weeks.
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: I saw that.
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: Yeah, that one, That one was definitely maybe you know,
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: sort of like a pick wheel like rub concept that
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: they kind of schemed him open on. So maybe a
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: little bit, but I I still think that That's always
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: been a strength of Josh's, Like I've never really had
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: any concern and that he would be able to dress
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: it up and try to get guys open. Yeah, i'd
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: say too.
- 1:26:40Speaker 9: Just I think Evan said it a lot, but I
- 1:26:42Speaker 9: just to underline it, I think Diggs has shown like, yeah,
- 1:26:45Speaker 9: when I want to, I'll be able to. But I'm
- 1:26:47Speaker 9: not going to like go out here and leave everything
- 1:26:49Speaker 9: I've got on the field in a joint practice or
- 1:26:51Speaker 9: in a day in shells out here. So that's what
- 1:26:53Speaker 9: I'm excited to see is what is Stefan Diggs fully
- 1:26:56Speaker 9: integrated into this offense with a game.
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: You know, a reasonable fact similar of what Digs has been.
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: Then I would agree with everybody's optimism the wide receivers.
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: If not, then you have the same guys that you've had.
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: I don't know if opt like it's not. I understand
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: that where they're at still at the talent level in
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: the room, but I do feel more optimistic about this
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: room compared but only.
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: Because of dis Yeah, that's it, I mean, I I
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: mean we might be playing to some An Daniels too.
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: I think Diggs, I think Matt Collins, I thought what.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: Coach can't do it, well, he can can't do it
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: for you, he can help.
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: I mean, I know that everybody thinks that it's all
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: about the coaches, but it's about town.
- 1:27:36Speaker 7: Garry Myers didn't think that.
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: Let's see who's this Andrew in New Jersey wants to
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: earn a T shirt, so let's see how he does.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: He says he's got a couple of trivia questions and
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: if they're good, if people think they're good, maybe uh
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: Matt will get a little effort. Last season, there was
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: one game where Joey Slide missed his only field goal attempt.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: What team was that against? Not an extra point shoot?
- 1:28:04Speaker 7: That's been lost in the sense of time, Tennessee.
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: No, no, no, I don't say I have no idea
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: the Jets, But like he was just one. He missed
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: more than one field goal, right.
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: I guess maybe he means that in the game he
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: only had one it was and he missed it again.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: You gotta gotta word our questions better.
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: Who do we play? Last year?
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: The answer was Miami Dolphins in Week twelve? You remember that, No,
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: I don't wow harder question. We didn't get that.
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: One, right, So it was twelve years Ago, I might
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: have been able to get it.
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: Joey Slide missed seven field goals, not extra points. What
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: teams were they against, Well, we didn't get one of them.
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: Missed uh Bara Tennessee Seattle in week two, we missed one,
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: Miami Week five, he missed one Tennessee Week nine, Miami
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: week twelve.
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: To have committed to memory individual missiter, Well, he just
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: wants a T shirt.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: No T shirt for you, get Andrew in New Jersey
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: a T shirt.
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: Joey Slide, the kicker who's not on the team anymore.
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: Booming, he kicked another sixty three yarder. I guess in
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: the preseason.
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: That's like everybody's making sixty three yarders now. It's the
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: thing that is for the guy who's the guy on
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: the Cowboys. I can't Brandon Aubrey literally kicking from the
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: other side of the fifty.
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: Well, the guy from Jackson seventy yard that's well into
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: the other side.
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: It's it's crazy like all these kickers these days there
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: are kicking from from sixty plus now.
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: Adam in down from California. Uh, Deny michel He says,
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: I think it's funny. On the twenty twenty fourth draft.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: You guys played a game of would you rather maybe
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: the guy in the rest the class amiss or May
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: bust and hit on the rest of the class. We
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: all can agree we are hoping May's the guy. Yeah,
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: that is true.
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: I do remember playing that.
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: Yeah, it is crazy that, out of everything that went
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: wrong last year, if May ends up being what we
- 1:30:17Speaker 4: all think he's going to be, they somehow got that right,
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: which is probably the hardest part to get right. And
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: they not only from an evaluation standpoint, because that part
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: was probably pretty easy, but the development standpoint, I think
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: they did a nice job with Drake May.
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: That's why I sort of I pushed back a little
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: bit on how bad the coaching was because I do
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: think that Alex van Pelt did a good job with
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: Drake May, and I saw some examples. Now, did you
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: do a good job with, you know, overcoming the offensive line. No,
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: they didn't. They insisted on just doing it the same
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: way all the time and never doing anything to help
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: those tackles. But I do think they schemed guys open
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: for Drake May and gave him a lot of easy throws,
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: and I think they they brought up along pretty well.
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: And I think he did develop a little Van Russiam.
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: They brought him, they brought him along well. His mechanics
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: and his footwork improved under Alex van Pelt. Now Vampel
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: is a great quarterback coach. Maybe I think that's what
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: we really are getting out of that.
- 1:31:13Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: I think you did a good job, you know him individual.
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: I think, do you have any you have breaking news?
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: Just Taylor Swift and well you were looking at the phone.
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: I thought maybe you had a little suffer.
- 1:31:22Speaker 7: Good for them, two happy kids. Good luck.
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: I don't know how they'll be able to make ends me.
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: Those two weddings are expensive, bro, but the chiefs Dyna.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: I'm glad to know that it was for real. Like
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: I thought, maybe, oh this is all, But.
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: You didn't really buy into that whole the NFL created.
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: Not the NFL, but like her, you know her marketing.
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: I mean the first year when they were together, people
- 1:31:46Speaker 3: thought for sure it was like an NFL conspiracy.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: The NFL doesn't tell Taylor Swift what to do, right.
- 1:31:52Speaker 9: Well, I'm just worried now that she's in love, if
- 1:31:54Speaker 9: she doesn't have the same kind of turmoil in.
- 1:31:56Speaker 7: Her life to write the great poetry that, she writes,
- 1:31:58Speaker 7: you know, and just.
- 1:31:59Speaker 9: Looking for what they when she starts having babies, well
- 1:32:02Speaker 9: I'm saying, like, I mean, I'm not gonna wish a
- 1:32:04Speaker 9: divorce upon them, but divorce be some good information, good
- 1:32:07Speaker 9: good inspiration for Taylor.
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: If that were to happen, Taylor Army is gonna come
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: after me because Taylor Swift takes.
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: Do they all like like old school chauvinistic of you, like,
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: when she starts having babies, She's gonna have babies.
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: She's gonna have babies.
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: But if she doesn't want to.
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: She doesn't want to, she won't have them. But I
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: think she will.
- 1:32:27Speaker 7: I mean, Jason Kes got like four daughters, so they
- 1:32:30Speaker 7: better get going. They want to balance that off a little.
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: Bit because Mama Kelsey will want cousins.
- 1:32:37Speaker 7: She has grant she got all those daughters, granddaughters. She
- 1:32:39Speaker 7: needs some sons. Quantie Swift, Frank.
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: Franklin, and Baltimore writes in who among these two receivers
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: do you think will benefit more from McDaniel's scheme and
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: the influx of better talent digs Williams Hollins provided better
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: spacing to Marrio, Douglas, Okashawan Boody As a follow up,
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: which of these do you think hasn't made been made
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: redundant with the Patriots offseason editions? So to marry we're
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: talking about Pop and Booty here, Which which benefits the
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: most from McDaniels and digs and better receivers.
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: Around Pop Pop?
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: Not even close?
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: Not close.
- 1:33:13Speaker 7: Yeah, boy, Booty's going to be relegated to not that much.
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:33:17Speaker 9: I think he's going to play a role, yeah, the
- 1:33:19Speaker 9: sacrificial X because he going to lose that role to Hollins.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: He might. I think.
- 1:33:23Speaker 9: I think that's a to me that's fluid between those
- 1:33:26Speaker 9: two and in a perfect world, that's Kyle Williams emerges
- 1:33:29Speaker 9: into that role full time and then they could maybe.
- 1:33:31Speaker 7: I mean, I don't know, V what do you think
- 1:33:32Speaker 7: do you think that that role is just always going
- 1:33:35Speaker 7: to be? This is kind of what it is? Or
- 1:33:37Speaker 7: like when Randy Moss came in.
- 1:33:38Speaker 9: Twenty two thousand and seven, we have a special player
- 1:33:40Speaker 9: now this extreme example, but.
- 1:33:42Speaker 7: I think we have a special player here. Let's expand
- 1:33:44Speaker 7: it a little bit.
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: That kind of extreme example, like maybe the bare minimum
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: is like Brandon Cooks in twenty seventeen, and I think
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: that was also out of necessity because Edelman got hurt.
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: So like they kind of had to feature Brandon Cooks
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: even more than maybe the plan. But you have to
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: have and Brandon Cooks was a really good player, so
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: you have to have at least that level of X
- 1:34:07Speaker 4: receiver Cooks in order for Cleming that to change. I
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: think like in Vegas he had DeVante Adams, so obviously
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: they they changed some things to to feature Devanta Adams.
- 1:34:18Speaker 4: I don't think you're changing things for Matt Collins.
- 1:34:20Speaker 9: And let's say Mac Collins almost kind of the perfect
- 1:34:22Speaker 9: guy for that if you're not going to make it
- 1:34:24Speaker 9: like I just want to put somebody in there who's
- 1:34:25Speaker 9: going to run.
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: Really the perfect guy for it because but he blocks well,
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: he does like all he's.
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: The perfect guy because he can play any of the spots.
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: Yeah, and he does.
- 1:34:35Speaker 3: That's what Josh mc loves does all that anywhere.
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: He does all the dirty work. He's going to catch
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: the ball in traffic, he's gonna win the ball down
- 1:34:43Speaker 4: the field, he's going to block, he's not going to
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: bitch about his targets like he's just.
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: I agree with all that.
- 1:34:49Speaker 7: He was all over the defense to practices. Ago was
- 1:34:53Speaker 7: all over them. I've never seen anything quite like it.
- 1:34:55Speaker 9: Just yelling at them, hyping them up, you know, yelling, yelling, Gonzales.
- 1:35:00Speaker 7: All you do is watch, you know, talking trash on
- 1:35:03Speaker 7: the highlights. Is it was pretty funny.
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: Cisco and San Diego rights and he has an over
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: under game over under opening touchdown drives seven and a
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: hay oh god.
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: That's a high number.
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: Yeah under, I.
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: Wonder, but game winning drives five and ahead.
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: That's a really high number.
- 1:35:20Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: Throw Trevion Henderson touchdowns six and a hay over under
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: over Kyle Williams touchdowns five and a hay under under
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: games where defensive holds teams under twenty one points six
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: and a hay oh ah.
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: This schedule and a half points.
- 1:35:41Speaker 7: I'll be positive on this one. I say, yes, they
- 1:35:44Speaker 7: got some bad offenses games.
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: That's that's the best number. I'm gonna say over because
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: I felt like I said under for everything.
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and longtime listener, first time reaching out. Shout out
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: Sammy Morris, who was a family friend.
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: Nice Okay, okay, same nice man.
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: More shout out Sammy Morris, Sam Morris, so Brian and
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: Swansea wants to steal Andrew Callahan's two stats in a
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: lie game? You want to play that.
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: I do like Andrew Callahan's two stats and all.
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: So he wants to change it to two facts of stats,
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: two facts and a lie. So there's three statements. Two
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: of them are facts. One.
- 1:36:26Speaker 8: What do you got?
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: Yakob Johnson released by the Houston Texans.
- 1:36:31Speaker 19: Oh, here we go, full back, Josh, Let's go, let's go, Sorry,
- 1:36:43Speaker 19: let's go.
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: Okay. I'm a little surprised he got released, though I
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: think he was.
- 1:36:51Speaker 4: I am excited about that. Bring him back, bring him home.
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: All right, bring him to facts and a lie. Tom
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: Brady and Peyton Manning are the only two quarterbacks to
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: win thirteen or more games in a season for two
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: different teams. That statement one. Statement two. The New York
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: Jets have never made the playoffs three years in a row,
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: and over the last twelve years, the Kansas City Chiefs
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: have more regular season wins than the Jets and Giants combined.
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: We have to pick out the lie.
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: Pick out the lie.
- 1:37:26Speaker 3: I'm going to go with as the lie.
- 1:37:29Speaker 7: I might go a to the lie.
- 1:37:30Speaker 14: Two.
- 1:37:30Speaker 7: That's seems like but thirteen's a lot, right, Like?
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: Did Brady win thirteen with Tampa.
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: No, I don't think so.
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: Number one is the lie. Yeah, Jared Goff is the
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: only quarterback to accomplish his feet He went thirteen with
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: the Rams in eighteen and fifteen with the Lions last year,
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: and the other two are true. Okay, he has two more.
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: Oh, Brady did win thirteen, so I was right, but
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: not for the right reasons. Right for the wrong reason.
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: Oh yeah, is he counting like playoff games because that
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: doesn't count.
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: He might have won thirteen, Tom Brady.
- 1:38:06Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: I don't know it's got anyway. Game two, there was
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: a two hundred and seventy two game gap between completed
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: passes by a Patriot quarterback. Okay, that's weird.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: Two hundred and seventy two game gap between.
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: What completed passes by a Patriot quarterback. What does that
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: even mean?
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: I don't know what that means anyone.
- 1:38:30Speaker 11: I don't know.
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: That's between Brady and someone else.
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: Maybe okay, again not worded.
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: Well, I don't understand.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: John Hannah is the only guard to ever receive a
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: vote for AP Offensive Player of the Year.
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: I'm gonna say that these are all just fat Oh
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: this is another round game.
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: Yeah, now another round of game.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: I can't really participate in this one because I don't
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: understand the first.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: And John Stalworth holds the NFL record with eight consecutive
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: playoff games with a touchdown reception. A Patriot player with
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: only twelve career regular season touchdown receptions is second all
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: time on this list with seventh straight playoff games with
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: a touchdown reception. I don't know. Number two was the lie?
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: Number two was the lie? Does he have any explanations there?
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: Yeah, John Hannah did receive a vote for AP Offensive
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: Player that I knew that number one is true, he says.
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: Doug Flutie completed a pass to John Stevens in the
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: fourth quarter of a loss the Atlanta Falcons on October fifteenth,
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: eighty nine. His next pass completion as a member of
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: the Patriots was Detroy Brown in the fourth quarter.
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: Now I understand it, right, Okay, Now I understand.
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: It could have been worded better.
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's why I wanted you to be.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: The last one. Over the last fourteen years, every team
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: in the AFC South has a losing.
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: Record over the last fourteen.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: Years, has had he should have said, has had?
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: I think like one year one year there no, I
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: think he means over the last fourteen years, they all
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: have a losing record.
- 1:39:59Speaker 4: Sure don't have a losing record over the last it
- 1:40:01Speaker 4: would be the lie.
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: Oh, I see what he means cumulatively. Okay, okay, I
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: get it now. Over the last fourteen years, every team
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: in the AFC South has had a losing record over
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: those fourteen years. The second statement, Andy Reid has a
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: higher career regular season winning percentage than Bill Belichick regular
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: season I.
- 1:40:23Speaker 3: Believe that's true.
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: And finally, Mike Rabel is the only NFL head coach
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: who has also caught a touchdown pass in the NFL. Oh,
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: look active, which one is the lie?
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: It's tough.
- 1:40:40Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: I'm gonna stick with the first. I'm gonna say A
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: is the lie.
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: Colts.
- 1:40:46Speaker 3: I think the Colts probably have a winning number.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: Three is the lie. Mike Ditka also caught a touchdown
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: pass from Roger starback in Super Bowl six.
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: Head coach.
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: He was a head coach, but did not say active.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: I thought you said active.
- 1:41:04Speaker 7: Did not say I was thinking active.
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: Honestly, I thought you guys said active.
- 1:41:09Speaker 7: Dan Campbell never caught a touchdown.
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: That's a good one. Yeah, I guess not. I feel
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: like he had to have right, like you played tight ends?
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: Did he really even play?
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: I mean, and he was definitely a blocking tight end,
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: Like I look at the guy, but like.
- 1:41:26Speaker 7: Slip him out and hit him in the flat.
- 1:41:29Speaker 3: John and Ireland, those are good yeah, and those are hard.
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: Ye, John and Ireland. Can we expect to see tight
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: ends being used for support for Will Campbell in the
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: early season games?
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: I think you expect to see that frequently.
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: I think for both tackles, yeah, chips, things like that.
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: I think that that's we've seen that all summer long. Honestly,
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: that they've.
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: Been I have to say that when the rumors of
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: Hendrickson possibly go into the Raiders, that scared the hell
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: out of me. I mean, what do you do?
- 1:42:00Speaker 12: You know?
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: Chip them double chip, send waves.
- 1:42:04Speaker 7: Dan Kimmell had like eleven touchdowns in his career.
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: Really that has so that's wrong?
- 1:42:09Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah. Dan Kimmel's also throw it was wrong anyway,
- 1:42:14Speaker 7: just three days older than me.
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: Oh yeah, because it was Dicka Like never mind.
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: Sweet kid rights. It haven't heard from him in a
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: long time now. Melvin and Tennessee. I spent the summer
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: studying the English language, so that I can sound smarter.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: So far, I've learned three new words. I don't know
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: what those words are though yet. Anyway, how do you
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: feel about the backup quarterback position for a team that
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: might be on the verge of making the playoffs? I
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: hope they can pull out a game or two of
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: maya sideline, that brief period could swing things.
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: I have a question that's kind of related to that,
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: but not necessarily for the same reasons. Do you think
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: having a quality backup quarterback is more important if you
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: to be a good team, then it would be if
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: you're just trying to rebuild.
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: No, I would say that again, is it more than.
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: Melvine was made a point to say for a team
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: that is on the verge of making the playoffs? Is
- 1:43:13Speaker 3: that Does that make it more pressing that you don't
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: feel great about the backup quarterback or you're not you
- 1:43:20Speaker 3: don't want your starting quarterback to get hurt. No, but
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: if you kind of think you're dead.
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: If he's but but if he said, on the verge
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: of making the playoffs, so one or two games could
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: be the difference. So if May turns his ankle in
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: the first quarter, do you have a guy who can
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: come in and hope and win that game for it.
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: My guess is if you're if you're just that kind
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: of a team where you're a middling team but May
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: is going to put you over the top and maybe
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: get you into the playoffs, then you're not going to
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: have a backup that's going to be able to do that.
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: Whereas if you're right, Whereas if you're a great team,
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: right and you're stacked and I lose my quarterback, all
- 1:43:56Speaker 3: hope is not lost. So you said, the really good
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: team and if I can get a guy that can
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: go in there and keep the you know, train on
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: the rings.
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: So you say the backup wouldn't. It's not about the
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: backup being good enough. It's the people around him with
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: a backup more good enough.
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: The better your team is, I think that that would
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: be more important.
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: It's a good point, Paul, Yeah, yeah, I get I
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: get that reason.
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: I would feel like if you if you think the
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: Patriots are a borderline playoff team, it'd be hard to
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: imagine that you're going to continue to be a playoff
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: team if Drake Made doesn't play three games. Yeah, right,
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: unless Drake May is just not not as good as
- 1:44:32Speaker 3: we all think.
- 1:44:32Speaker 7: Like, I don't even want to think that.
- 1:44:37Speaker 3: The bottom line the bottom line for sweet Kid, and
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: I think the whole panel here probably agrees they might
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: they might be in the market for another quarterback.
- 1:44:48Speaker 4: Yeah, well, they're definitely gonna have three. I mean, they
- 1:44:51Speaker 4: probably signed one to the practice squad at the very least,
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: like you can just fore.
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: I think they're different things though, Like do you sign
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: the guy for the practice squad to replaced Woldry, Yeah,
- 1:45:01Speaker 3: you think you can get better, better developmental right? Or
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: do you go to fred Route and get this?
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: But I wouldn't be surprised like if like Tommy DeVito
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: or Bailey's Appy's on a practice squad for a while. Yeah, Like,
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: I don't think it's a guarantee that those guys are
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: going to find fifty three in a roster spot.
- 1:45:18Speaker 9: He's interesting that wolders they got rid of him last
- 1:45:20Speaker 9: week and is there nothing there?
- 1:45:22Speaker 7: Like what didn't he do?
- 1:45:24Speaker 9: Did they just say, well, it's never going to happen
- 1:45:26Speaker 9: with him, Like what's the line for making the roster
- 1:45:28Speaker 9: as like a practice squad guy with a quarterback?
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: I just think that he wasn't worth whether it's practice
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: squad or else.
- 1:45:36Speaker 9: Having a spot for an interesting evaluation, especially in the
- 1:45:39Speaker 9: league where luckily now you're in a place where you
- 1:45:41Speaker 9: feel like you have the quarterback for the moment. But
- 1:45:44Speaker 9: I would always be looking for some kind of developmental talent,
- 1:45:47Speaker 9: you know, some kind of guy just to continue.
- 1:45:50Speaker 3: Was just talking about this on the Nowhere All Hill
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: yesterday and I just looked at it. I mean, I
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: saw the kid make some throws, and I don't think
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: he's completely without the ability to pass. But we watched
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: I think it was twenty practices altogether. He almost never
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: got any reps y. Yeah, so that told you that
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: they didn't really think, like, I don't know how that
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: and some people, I'm not saying you guys fell into
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: this character. I don't think you did. But some people
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: were like, Wow, I'm really surprised they let him go
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: so quickly. I'm like, they kind of told you what
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: they thought about him all summer when he was watching.
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: Especially those like the joint practices he got zero never
- 1:46:26Speaker 4: All right, we got a minute left.
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: Let's quickly get to some of our callers who have
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: been holding on. Justina, I believe in North Carolina. What's up, Hi?

- 1:46:43Speaker 12: and I know he has a lot of is there
- 1:46:46Speaker 12: a background anyway? I know he's very knowledgeable, but I
- 1:46:51Speaker 12: just didn't appreciate I didn't appreciate them saying that he
- 1:46:57Speaker 12: was a Nooo, I don't know if I took it
- 1:46:59Speaker 12: wrong what And I'm appreciating it not taking it too hard.
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: So you got Evan's bad bad Actually, Justina, Evan likes
