- 0:32And we're live. Welcome to the All Balls No
- 0:35Philtre podcast. Live from the cabin kitchen.
- 0:38I'm Zach. He's Brad.
- 0:40Hello there. And behind the scenes, we have a
- 0:43man that was once nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, but he
- 0:46couldn't attend the awards to make it past his bedtime.
- 0:48He's researcher. Carl.
- 0:51Yes, researcher Carl. I will do mate, all right.
- 0:56Yeah, yeah, I'm good, I'm good. It's been a couple of weeks
- 1:00since we've been together so it's going to be nice to catch
- 1:04up and talk some ball. That's it, ma'am.
- 1:07That's it. I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:08What we're going to start today. Well, today, as it's become
- 1:12regular now, we'll look at the news headlines for this week.
- 1:16We've got our selected games for Balls of the week and a roundup
- 1:20of the remaining Wild Card round games.
- 1:22We're going to hit the latest news that's happened over the
- 1:24last few weeks or so while we've been out of action over the
- 1:26holidays, before looking ahead at the Divisional Round.
- 1:30And of course, let's not forget all other balls for the other
- 1:35major stories in the world of sport.
- 1:37So let's get straight into it, shall we, with the news.
- 1:41Looking forward to making a packed episode by the sounds of
- 1:43it. Right, getting into the news,
- 1:46the coaching carousel that's going on.
- 1:48This is dominating the world of football right now.
- 1:51Who's going where, who's who's been sacked, who's getting
- 1:56interviews, right? Let's have a look 1st through
- 1:59the firings so far for this year, right, because there's
- 2:03been I don't know if it's because like we're covering it,
- 2:09quote unquote, like as in we look, I'm looking into it a bit
- 2:12more, but it just seems to be a lot of people have been binned
- 2:16off this year. Like I know there's a lot of
- 2:18turn around normally, but it just seems to have been a lot of
- 2:22right out out the door. What do you reckon?
- 2:26Yeah. I mean, you know, I think it's
- 2:28nice to throw a positive note on other podcasts that we enjoy.
- 2:34And I'm a big fan of Heed the Call.
- 2:36And they say every year that there is always 6 to 8 coach
- 2:41firings, no less, no more. And I think by the time Black
- 2:46Monday was sort of like part way through, we had 6 and then we
- 2:50got another one and another one. And we've got 8 available
- 2:54opportunities here for a coach to go in to a team, try and make
- 3:00their mark. But equally, we've got 8
- 3:02coaches, many of which could potentially pick up head
- 3:08coaching jobs elsewhere. I agree.
- 3:13I agree. And there's some big names on on
- 3:16the list. So we're just going through the
- 3:17list right quickly. Giants, Brian de Ball.
- 3:22De ball. De Ball De ball.
- 3:25Yeah. Brian de ball out of the window.
- 3:28Are you surprised yes or no, realistically?
- 3:32No, I mean the writing was on the wall, wasn't it?
- 3:34Obviously you went mid season, so that's been a sort of a dated
- 3:38one, but I think it was probably lucky to be here this season
- 3:44anyway. I think it was kind of a give
- 3:46him another shot with a a new QB and it just didn't work, did it?
- 3:51There was so much buzz around the Giants at the beginning of
- 3:54the season. People forgot that they only had
- 3:56like two wins. I think it was when Dabo was
- 3:58fired and because of the buzz around the QB, the running back,
- 4:05this dynamic duo, and they kind of gave Dabo a bit of a, an
- 4:10extended leash if you like, but the results just weren't there.
- 4:14And they've not been there really.
- 4:15After his time in New York. He had one big season with Danny
- 4:19Dimes and that kind of, well, we know how that ended, didn't we?
- 4:22But no, not surprised at all. Now same same there were that's
- 4:28been due at the start of the year, but other than that they
- 4:31should have them all with what they had.
- 4:33Moving on then to the Titans have lost Brian Callahan again.
- 4:37For me, I'm not surprised at all.
- 4:39I think a lot of the Titans fans will be like seething with the
- 4:44backroom office about how well Raybould is doing elsewhere and
- 4:48they bend him off after not doing terrible, but doing
- 4:51terrible for what he was there as such.
- 4:54Yeah, it's not not not great. Especially having that number
- 4:57one pick like, you know, Cam Ward in in the backfield for
- 5:01them and there's a QB not there to do much with him.
- 5:04Probably a blessing in disguise for the Titans kind of
- 5:08organisation now starting fresh with that generational as what
- 5:12is what is supposed to be QB in that backfield.
- 5:16I feel like they say that term every year with the new QB don't
- 5:19they? Generational talent never been
- 5:21seen before. We had that with Trev, didn't
- 5:24we? And you know, he's had a great
- 5:25year this year, but it's not always the case, is it, when
- 5:27they first come in. But he has shown flashers.
- 5:29He's, you know, Camwod's definitely shown flashers, but
- 5:31there wasn't enough there to save Callaghan's job.
- 5:34I mean, if you look at this list generally, I think there's a few
- 5:37there that are no surprise. You've got Raheem Morris
- 5:40departing from the Falcons, you've got Pete Carroll from the
- 5:43Raiders, you've got Jonathan Gannon from Cardinals.
- 5:46I think all of those teams that we've spoken about so far, kind
- 5:51of obvious like to be expected, but there's definitely two names
- 5:57in there. I'm saying 3 because Mike
- 6:01McDaniel there's so much mixed reporting on, like he wasn't
- 6:06fired on Black Monday as they call it, but the Stefanski and
- 6:10the Harbour are kind of the two names.
- 6:14Harbour especially was a surprise and I think we'll
- 6:15probably dig a bit deeper into that.
- 6:17But Stefanski's been given a good amount of time and he's had
- 6:20opportunities where he's actually done really well with
- 6:22what he's got. I mean, he was handcuffed to
- 6:25Deshawn, wasn't he? And he's made it work with so
- 6:29many Q BS. I don't have the exact stats, I
- 6:31mean research Carmite beyond this trying to look at it, but I
- 6:35think Browns have had a insane number of quarterbacks start in
- 6:41different games for them during Stefanski's time.
- 6:44I can't remember the exact figure, but I know it's
- 6:45significant and he's a lot of times made it work.
- 6:49I mean, look what he did with Flacco.
- 6:50He's had those moments. Shudo wasn't terrible, you know.
- 6:54Well, he had moments both ways, I think, but he's a little bit
- 6:59of a surprise. But I think the big, big name of
- 7:01them all there obviously from the Ravens, is Harbour, isn't
- 7:05it? Yeah, I mean, what were
- 7:07seventeen seasons They were there 17 years.
- 7:09It was there. It's a big name.
- 7:11It's a household name. Is is known the word what the
- 7:15word him and Tomlin there for the for the durations of the big
- 7:20the big guys. I was very surprised.
- 7:24No, I wasn't surprised, but I was shocked at the same time.
- 7:29Like I was. You could kind of see it coming
- 7:31after the past, you know, this year in particular.
- 7:33But it did kind of be like, oh, like it's going to seem weird
- 7:37seeing somebody else on that sideline of the Ravens.
- 7:38Like as a Ravens, if I was a Ravens fan, how would you feel?
- 7:42Because the buzz now around the coaching pool, There was a buzz
- 7:45before Stefanski was like a target for a lot of people.
- 7:49Like I saw in the news, like a lot of people were getting him
- 7:52in for for an interview. Like we want this guy on our
- 7:54team and then all of a sudden Harbour gets binned off and it's
- 7:58right, everybody wants him. I think Adam Schefter tweeted
- 8:03out that there was there was there was teams that are that
- 8:08are currently had head coaches that were reaching out to
- 8:12potentially get an interview, which as a Ravens fan, I'm like,
- 8:17Oh my God, please don't be Titans 2.0.
- 8:18Please don't be Titans 2.0 with the whole Ray Ball thing, like
- 8:22what's going to happen here? But again, look at look at Baker
- 8:25Mayfield with and some Donald, for instance, right?
- 8:30They didn't fit their fit. They didn't fit that
- 8:32organisation. And sometimes you kind of
- 8:35outgrow it. You drift apart.
- 8:38It goes a different way. Maybe it's a blessing disguise
- 8:40for all, all of teams around it. All, all, all areas, should I
- 8:43say. But yeah, I.
- 8:46Think it's, it's a weird one with Tarbot because if you look
- 8:50at the those that list of big names, he's going to be or
- 8:55should probably be the first domino to fall.
- 8:58So he's going to set that. So I've not set the market as
- 9:01such, but in terms of like last year, it was Ben Johnson, wasn't
- 9:04it? He was the the hot name.
- 9:07And it's a different kind of group here.
- 9:09We've got looking at jobs and and looking to be that next head
- 9:13coach of whatever team. It's a different sort of cohort.
- 9:16But he's the name, isn't he? That's going to make all those
- 9:19dominoes fall afterwards or as far as I'm concerned, that's the
- 9:22way it looks. But on the flip side of that,
- 9:25and this is where I think it's so crazy, as you look at that
- 9:28list of teams as well, and if you were a prospective head
- 9:31coach and you're in demand, what's the team you'd want to go
- 9:35to? You've got Giants is the big
- 9:39Tiffany franchise, isn't it? Of the NFL?
- 9:41It's the one that they all, you know, look to.
- 9:44It's in that top tier of established historic NFL clubs.
- 9:49You've got the Titans with Cam Ward.
- 9:51That's exciting. It's new.
- 9:52Could you replicate what Ben Johnson's done in Chicago?
- 9:55That's probably what people are going to be looking at.
- 9:57The Browns and the Raiders right now I would avoid like the
- 10:00plague. And but then the Ravens have got
- 10:04Lamar Jackson. So you've got the Ravens, who on
- 10:10paper, in my opinion, look like probably one of those top teams
- 10:13that you'd want to go to who's not going to want to go and
- 10:16coach Lamar Jackson. What is it, a two time MVP?
- 10:19And then you've got Harbaugh on the flip side of that, who's won
- 10:23a Super Bowl. He's well respected.
- 10:25He's proven what he kind of needs to prove.
- 10:28Although it's probably disappointing he didn't get over
- 10:30the hump with Lamar. He's the guy to do it really,
- 10:33isn't he? But it's, yeah, it's going to be
- 10:36interesting to see how it all pans out.
- 10:39On the counter of the of the Raven side of things, as much as
- 10:41I agree, two years ago, if this had been available two years
- 10:45ago. Has Lamar been Lamar this year?
- 10:47No. Has Lamar been riddled with
- 10:51little injuries throughout the year?
- 10:53Yes. Is this mobile agile QB that's
- 10:58run X amount of yards over the past X amount of seasons?
- 11:02Is it catching up on him? Is it funny style?
- 11:06Yeah, correct. But this year he just see he's
- 11:08he seems to have every other week he's missing training, he's
- 11:11missing training, he's missing training through something.
- 11:13And as much as I, I by the way, I fully agree with you.
- 11:16If I'm a head coach in here, the raid, there's two teams for me
- 11:18that I'm stepping up for here and it's the Ravens and the
- 11:20Dolphins. It really is.
- 11:23And just I I I just. I'm the Dolphins fan and and I'm
- 11:29avoiding them like the plague. I.
- 11:31See, I don't know 2's. Contract 2's contract is insane.
- 11:35The caps situation is insane. There's a new GM, so that's
- 11:44that's there, that's in place. But on the flip side, you ride
- 11:51it out for a year. If you're not happy with Tua,
- 11:53you can ship him on really. And it's much more financially,
- 11:58like financially sensible. Your cap situation's a lot
- 12:01better in a year, maybe actually it's a good one because you've
- 12:04kind of got that one year risk free Hail Mary shot before then
- 12:10maybe going out with the GM, getting your new QB, full
- 12:15restart, and you've kind of got then the usual two or three
- 12:18years that people get maybe. So maybe you're in for a shout
- 12:21there, but I'm not convinced with the Dolphins situation next
- 12:25year. Ice As a Dolphins fan, are you
- 12:27surprised that that that Mcdaniel's gone?
- 12:32No, but at the same time, he's struggled in areas and he's
- 12:41struggled to evolve. I think he made some bold
- 12:47decisions this year, which if you look at the back end of the
- 12:52Dolphin season, we actually, you know, things did get a lot
- 12:57better. And I'm not necessarily saying
- 12:59that's because 2 wasn't on the field.
- 13:01I think it was just the game planning, the approach to the
- 13:03games, all those sort of things were different.
- 13:06So to say he's not evolved is probably not fair.
- 13:11But then on the flip side, I don't think he's evolved enough
- 13:14and developed enough and quick enough.
- 13:19Fair enough. Like I I think he's the perfect
- 13:22role for like an OC. Not a head coach just yet, but
- 13:28we'll see how we're getting. So let's quickly run through the
- 13:32interviews that are happening now the the confirmed
- 13:36interviews, right? So at the moment, the Falcons
- 13:39have interviewed John Harbour, Kevin Stefanski and they've
- 13:46they've interviewed a few other people as well, such as Vance
- 13:49Joseph, Robert Seller and Jeff Halsey.
- 13:54That halfway. Sorry, my bad pronunciation
- 13:57there is about it. Yeah.
- 13:58The Ravens then moved on to them.
- 14:00They've interviewed Keith Kingsby for the head coaching
- 14:04job there with a few of the ones expected but not reported as of
- 14:08yet. The Raiders have interviewed
- 14:12Jesse Minter to he's. Confirmed he's been interviewed.
- 14:15I don't think he's actually interviewed just yet.
- 14:19Oh, OK, So perfect, happy days. And then there's there's a few
- 14:23other names going across. I know Mcdaniel's been
- 14:25interviewed at Cleveland, which I think would be a very risky
- 14:30buy if I were Cleveland, but there's a few other ones across
- 14:33there. Now.
- 14:33I agree with you. I think there is no head
- 14:37coaching jobs filled until Harbaugh's gone.
- 14:41I think everyone see where he goes and then boom go from
- 14:45there. Yeah, I think you're right.
- 14:48He's the domino, isn't he? And I think on the McDaniel
- 14:51thing, I think it's, it's an interesting one because the
- 14:54Browns is just going to be in another worse or a similar
- 14:58situation to what Miami would be next year anyway.
- 15:01I think they've got a really weird situation.
- 15:02They've got, I guess the QB situation's a little bit
- 15:05different, but there's no clear direction there.
- 15:09But I think he has probably got a, in my opinion, would be
- 15:15better to regroup and kind of do what Cliff Kingsbury did.
- 15:18He went away, he built back his credit.
- 15:22And Brian Flores for that matter, just on the other side
- 15:24of the ball, you know, went away, got that respect back as a
- 15:28well as an OC or ADC in the case of Brian Flores.
- 15:31And now is again pushing for head coaching jobs.
- 15:35Flores has another name that keeps coming up now and then,
- 15:39but he's got the whole weird situation with the NFL and the
- 15:41lawsuit and things like that, which people say might keep him
- 15:44away from a job. But there's a lot of potential
- 15:47candidates. I don't think the names are as
- 15:49big and buzzy as last year, but there's potential there.
- 15:53Mccaffrey's been linked to Giants as well, and Mike
- 15:56McCaffrey, he's also been linked to the Giants somewhere along
- 15:58the lines as well. But yeah, so there's quite a few
- 16:02names floating around. There's quite a few jobs to be
- 16:04to be had and like you say there's a few.
- 16:08So after places having them, not just the pics but having the
- 16:12young cubies as well. So right, happy to move on to
- 16:17our balls of the week for this week mate.
- 16:20Yeah, let's do it. Let's get to the balls of the
- 16:22week. Sweet.
- 16:23Let's go. All righty then, balls of the
- 16:35week #1 is the Green Bay Packers versus the Chicago Bears.
- 16:41The Green Bay Packers 27, Chicago Bears 31.
- 16:44Now what a game this was. OK, the Bears didn't come out
- 16:50exactly firing two and six on 4th.
- 16:53I mean, 4th attempts everyday is great to have grin it, but they
- 16:56tried four in the first half and succeeded once.
- 17:00OK, BJ Ben Johnson. His mind works in what I'd love
- 17:06to sit and just have a look at what his mind is doing.
- 17:08His mind works in absolutely magical ways.
- 17:10They were down. I've got my notes down here.
- 17:13They were down. Oh, I've got Oh dear, they were
- 17:21down. Oh my God, I want to write.
- 17:26Jeez Louise. Down a big Scar 21. 21/3 21
- 17:31three they were down at half time.
- 17:33I could not find my notes to save my life.
- 17:35Down 21, down 21, three at half time and then came back through
- 17:40to outscore them by 25 points in the in the I'm just in.
- 17:47The fourth quarter and overtime, 25 points.
- 17:50It's it's a big way, a big dramatic way to turn over a
- 17:57rival, isn't it? Like that's a crazy turn of
- 18:02events and it's it's got to be down to a combination of Caleb
- 18:05and Ben. Like Ben Johnson's absolutely
- 18:08nuts, isn't he? Like he is chaos in a Canon.
- 18:12I think he's been kind of like hidden under the limelight when
- 18:16he was at the Lions or he was hidden in the shadows more so if
- 18:20you like when he was at the Lions.
- 18:21And now he's got that front and centre attention, if you like,
- 18:27as the head coach of the Bears and taking Caleb Williams, doing
- 18:30what he's done with that team to to make that turn around in a
- 18:35playoff game over a division rival, it's just huge A. 100%
- 18:40through 3 As we look at the stats here through three of the
- 18:43quarters, Caleb Williams got 177 yards with two interceptions.
- 18:47Fourth quarter alone, 184 yards, 2 TDs, 22 point conversions.
- 18:52Right. This guy is, he's excelling so
- 18:57much now. If you look at how the how he
- 19:00was last year and how he's grown and things like that, he's just
- 19:04progressing so well. And when BJ got the, the job
- 19:06there, a lot of people were saying, you know, Caleb and,
- 19:10and, and Ben Johnson's personalities will clash.
- 19:13You know, Ben Johnson's quite a regimented person where Caleb's
- 19:16quite out there. And they're just, they'll, and
- 19:18all of a sudden they're now growing and they've, they've
- 19:20formed this partnership. And I, I believe there were a
- 19:22video circulating in, in the changing rooms afterwards of
- 19:26Caleb like giving Ben Johnson the game ball be like, this
- 19:29guy's changed my life. And now 20 years, they've got
- 19:33that far. If he stays fit 20 years, they
- 19:35can have that far. This guy looks phenomenal and we
- 19:38can't, we can't talk about Caleb and Ben Johnson's offence
- 19:42without talking about that throw, The throw where Caleb is
- 19:47on the move. He then throws what would
- 19:49technically be crossbody whilst jumping and having a Green Bay
- 19:55defender holding onto his ankle at the same time.
- 19:59And yet the pass is the strength this guy has.
- 20:03Is unbelievable to be making them type of throws now if we're
- 20:09a Green Bay fan, I'm looking here like OK, Ben Johnson openly
- 20:15has stated that the Ben Johnson kind of advises the Green Bay
- 20:18Chicago feud is not ideal anyway.
- 20:21That the the rivals losing after having such a big lead is not
- 20:26ideal. As a Green Bay fan, I'm thinking
- 20:29now what what's next for us because we shouldn't be giving
- 20:35this much again today. I play the divisional rival 3 *
- 20:38a year. It was tough anyway, but to lose
- 20:41that I have to have in that lead is a bit of a statement.
- 20:44And to make matters worse, which I I love this, I'm not going to
- 20:47lie to make Mars worse. Ben Johnson afterwards in the in
- 20:52the changing room is like I I hate the Green Bay parkers.
- 20:56I'm so and like to publicly go out there and say that and the
- 21:00Chicago are publicising this. I'm all for that.
- 21:05Let's go a bit a bit of smart talk and it's good touching on
- 21:09some of the Green Bay stuff though, like Jordan Love throws
- 21:12323 yards. That's not that's not some
- 21:17that's not a bad doing by AQB during 323 yards, 4 touchdowns
- 21:21and no picks still losing the game.
- 21:24What you want to be looking at is special teams.
- 21:27Now me, you and Research Carl are all part of British American
- 21:32football. We all mean you, Coach Carl's
- 21:34part of the team and we've always stayed there for years
- 21:37and years. Special teams will win you
- 21:39games. OK.
- 21:40They can break our breaking games.
- 21:42Brandon McManus missing 2 field goals and one extra point is
- 21:46ludicrous. And that's lost in the game that
- 21:49they've won that game there. Yeah, albeit the green may cut
- 21:53at Sach. Caleb, happy days.
- 21:54But them that special team play goes through and them quick to
- 21:58go through, Green Bay have won. Yeah, I mean, it's it is one of
- 22:05those things, isn't it? Special teams can win or lose
- 22:07you a game. Absolutely.
- 22:10It's just so interesting that what you mentioned about Ben
- 22:16Johnson going I hate Green Bay, blah, blah, blah.
- 22:20I, I can't remember where I, I heard it just today or
- 22:24yesterday, probably just on Twitter or X, but it, it was a
- 22:28throwback to one of Ben Johnson's sort of early
- 22:30interviews when he got the job in Chicago.
- 22:32And I think he like openly said something along.
- 22:35I'm, I'm not exact quoting here, but basically I can't wait to
- 22:39beat Green Bay. I can't wait to beat Matt
- 22:42Lafleur twice a year. And that's what he's done.
- 22:46So I think that, am I right in thinking they had a share of the
- 22:48spoils in the divisional games? I think it was 1 all, wasn't it?
- 22:51I believe. And then obviously this one
- 22:54settled the score. And it's just interesting.
- 22:57Is this is it just one of those seasons, you know, and Bears
- 23:01have had a great season, you know, credit where credit's due?
- 23:05Or is it a turning point in the rivalry?
- 23:07You know, think back to the years when a rod was at Green
- 23:10Bay and he's at Chicago. Like, I own you, I own you or
- 23:16whatever it was he said. And it's it'd be so interesting
- 23:19to see how this goes over the next two years.
- 23:21Did you see the the after the interview after where they've
- 23:26all got the cheese graters on the head and he's there
- 23:29literally grating cheese on live TV and they're just like they're
- 23:33all laughing about. It's brilliant.
- 23:34It's so much like smack talk and it's just brilliant.
- 23:37That's what you want to see out of a rivalry, isn't it?
- 23:40I'm I'm all for that. I'd really and that I think
- 23:43there's too much of this like, you know, yeah, you know what
- 23:48good to see really good friends. No on that field.
- 23:52Like you have rivals for a reason yet afterwards you can go
- 23:57do what you want to do. But when you're you what you
- 23:59have them rivals for reason and that.
- 24:00And like this this brings this brings back like an old school
- 24:04soccer. Sorry for the UK fans here.
- 24:07An old school like 90s soccer, Man United, Leeds United
- 24:11rivalry, like that's what you want to bring back.
- 24:13The old school kind of you play in your divisional rival, but
- 24:17you're playing, you're playing the ones that you don't like,
- 24:19the ones that you really, really don't like.
- 24:21You're going to go in a bit harder.
- 24:22You're going to get levelled. You're going to, you know, it's
- 24:24going to hurt. But I'm all, I'm all fight.
- 24:27That cheese grater incident with the with the with the heart is
- 24:32it's my, it's my kind of shout is that I love that type of
- 24:34stuff. I love that type of stuff.
- 24:36But yeah, anything else on the Green Bay and Chicago game
- 24:39before we move on to our pause of the week #2?
- 24:42No, I think it's, you know, it was a, it's a real exciting game
- 24:45and I think the facts of that division rivalry just sort of
- 24:49added that extra heat. But it was definitely one of
- 24:53those, one of those games and we were kind of lucky this weekend
- 24:57on the whole, especially for the first part of the weekend.
- 24:59It's one of those games that you don't traditionally get in the
- 25:01wild card rounds, the wild card rounds quite often full of duds,
- 25:04isn't it? 7th seeds just getting shot from
- 25:08day one, you know, out of the door.
- 25:10But we didn't start with that this weekend.
- 25:13So I think all first three, maybe four games, we're all
- 25:16close for an exciting games and this obviously was one of those
- 25:21early ones. So it's just a nice, exciting
- 25:23way to start the weekend, I think.
- 25:25I agree. I agree.
- 25:26I think the the entire lot so far just this weekend has been
- 25:31fantastic. I want to say there was there
- 25:34was a start knocking out somewhere that there was the
- 25:36most amount of fourth quarter turnarounds or comebacks and
- 25:39things are like the points guard something on the line if I
- 25:41should, I should have researched that more to be fair, but I had
- 25:44a. Start about that and it was
- 25:46something I think the first three games, forgive me if I get
- 25:49this wrong, I'm sure the first three games of the wild card
- 25:52weekend are three out of the 1st 4.
- 25:55The team that was winning at the 2 minute warning were the team
- 25:59that lost, which is crazy to think about in playoff football.
- 26:06It's, it's, it's mad you did these, disposed of the best
- 26:09teams ever and it just shows that you are.
- 26:10Yeah. Regardless of the scoreline,
- 26:13it's not over until it's over. OK, let's move on to our balls.
- 26:16The week #2 your game is Brad, even though you've saved my ass
- 26:20in that last one. So let's go.
- 26:24Yeah, Buffalo Bills 27, beating the Jacksonville Jaguars right
- 26:29at the end there with a score of 24.
- 26:33A real thriller, a weird game, a weird game.
- 26:36I think the first, it's one of those games of two halves, but I
- 26:41think this was the game that I think if you look at the odds
- 26:47and things before this game, you were getting a real mixed bag.
- 26:50I think I looked at at one bookmaker who had Bills as
- 26:54favourites. The other one had Jags as 3
- 26:56point favourites. It was so close and so back and
- 26:58forth and you've got 2, I think 2 narratives here, or not maybe
- 27:022 narratives, but two things at play.
- 27:04Obviously Jags had the home field advantage, winning their
- 27:06division. Obviously Bills came second in
- 27:09the East, so Jags had the home field advantage.
- 27:13It's Florida, not quite at the height of the season, but you
- 27:16know, it's Florida regardless. You got the humidity there.
- 27:19It looks like a beautiful day at times.
- 27:22But the real narrative there that you had before this game
- 27:26was Buffalo's last playoff win was in 1992 on the road, which
- 27:34is crazy, really, when you think about how good the Bills have
- 27:40been in periods, especially over the last 567 years.
- 27:45They've really stepped it up. But I think what they have had
- 27:49is a lot of the time they've had home field games, and then when
- 27:53they've gone on the road, whether it be KC or the Bengals,
- 27:57they fell short. So this one was a weird game
- 28:00because Jags had to prove a point.
- 28:03They ended the season really, really strong.
- 28:05And I probably didn't give them the credit they deserved when we
- 28:07first started this podcast in December time.
- 28:11And a friend of mine has given me a lot of stick for that as
- 28:15well. One of our good friends are Jags
- 28:17fans. He's given me a lot of stick
- 28:18about that. So this is his shout out.
- 28:20This is his apology that he's been asking for.
- 28:23But this, this game was one of those games where they really
- 28:28could have done it. They really could have beat
- 28:30them. And I was literally on the end
- 28:33of my seat watching this. I know a few of our friends,
- 28:36they all got together at the local pub and they were watching
- 28:39it together. Unfortunately, I was just at
- 28:41home watching that. But I I felt the the tension and
- 28:45the atmosphere and I could just see our friends who are Jags
- 28:48fans. Like I could almost visually see
- 28:51their nerves. And I wasn't even there.
- 28:54But Josh Allen did Josh Allen things, didn't he?
- 28:57Like it infuriates me because he's in the east with the Fins,
- 29:02but he fought off injuries. He that tush push.
- 29:07Sorry, I'm going on a crazy tangent here, but the the tush
- 29:11push, which is ironic because Sean McDermott wanted to ban it,
- 29:14but the tush push to get the first down and they ended up
- 29:201011 yards, nearly scoring A touchdown.
- 29:22I think it was given potentially as a touchdown originally or it
- 29:25looks like a touchdown, but they were one yard shot.
- 29:27I mean, that's just, that's the, the metal that Bills have got
- 29:32and. Literally picked him up from.
- 29:34Josh Allen. Literally picked him up, drove
- 29:37him forward, put him down. Like just going on to Josh Allen
- 29:40that he mentioned the injuries. I, I were watching the game and
- 29:44it blessed there were no kind of blessed with no red zone because
- 29:47you can focus on kind of the one game at the time there, Josh
- 29:50Allen nearly broke his leg. What looked like his leg was
- 29:54mangled in, in, in ways that's not very nice to see if you're,
- 29:57if you're looking at your, your franchise QB 2 plays prior to
- 30:02that, he's throwing the ball and he hits his hand on, on his
- 30:05lineman's helmet like and he's, and then he's, he's in and out
- 30:09of the medical tent. The guy's Iron Man.
- 30:12And I feel the same way as you because we both share him as a
- 30:15divisional rival. I hate him, but Jesus Christ is
- 30:19phenomenal. This guy is unreal.
- 30:21And I respect him so, so much. It pains me to say that he's our
- 30:26divisional rival, but yeah. It's just one of those with him,
- 30:33isn't it? Like he is the real deal and I
- 30:36think he gets a lot of hype in the media and to be fair, he
- 30:41went through it, Denise in his early years.
- 30:43He he got a lot of stick as well in his first few years and, and
- 30:47probably rightly so, he was erratic and he was picked off
- 30:52left, right and centre. And he still has those games.
- 30:54He still has those games where he's he's not all that and tries
- 30:58forcing things too much. But you can see him maturing in
- 31:02his game. And I think for them to end that
- 31:08game, I mean, the fourth quarter had four changes in leading
- 31:12teams, SO4 lead changes, if you like, just in the fourth
- 31:16quarter, which probably emphasised that back and forth
- 31:20of this game. But the Bills defence were there
- 31:23and they they probably got the Bills through the game.
- 31:27I mean, the interception at the end of the game was tragic.
- 31:30You know, they're just shy of a minute left on the clock, three
- 31:33points down. You could see, you know, that
- 31:35that fourth quarter, Trevor Lawrence was locked in and he
- 31:38was marching them down the field multiple times.
- 31:41And you could see it. I was like, they're going to get
- 31:44there. They're at least going to get a
- 31:45field goal. Let's take this to overtime.
- 31:46This is one of those games. This would be great.
- 31:48And it was an awful throw. And it was a really, really
- 31:54great pick by Bishop, I think it was.
- 31:57And I was at a tip to pass maybe actually in hindsight.
- 32:02Either way, it was a really brutal way to end the game.
- 32:08Wasn't the only time he was picked off, I think was it 2
- 32:09picks perhaps? And yeah, I, I feel for the Jags
- 32:16because they, they really, they really did close out the season
- 32:19really strong and they could have won this game.
- 32:22I think credit to Liam Cohen, he, he got a lot of stick when
- 32:26he started in Jacksonville. You know that that press
- 32:29conference, the Duval was. Awful.
- 32:34It was disgusting and rightly so.
- 32:37He's a lot of stick for that, but actually he's done a really
- 32:39good job and it'll be exciting to see where the Jags go from
- 32:43here. Yeah, looking at the Jags, like
- 32:46looking at T lot, we came out for me from from a guy watching
- 32:51the sport, I thought he came out in the first couple of drives
- 32:55first first quarter in particular didn't think that the
- 32:57Jags played well at all. I didn't think they came out.
- 33:00I thought it took him a better, a better movement to go.
- 33:04And then like you say, he got better and better as the game
- 33:06went on. Towards the back end of the
- 33:08game. They were, they were that last
- 33:11part of the season Jags that we knew.
- 33:13And I think if they come out like that, I think it'd be a
- 33:15completely different game. Didn't utilise that, that run
- 33:19game that the Bills have been weak against a lot this year.
- 33:23In my opinion, wherever that is, the Bills just picking up on
- 33:26that. I'm doing better to stop.
- 33:28I don't know, but they could have utilised that a little bit
- 33:31more for me. But don't you?
- 33:33Feel like the second-half when they really started taking it to
- 33:37him, like yeah, you know those complimentary football, but it
- 33:40was actually Trevor's passing game as that in my opinion, that
- 33:44really took it to them. It was definitely complemented
- 33:48by the running game and and that did pick up.
- 33:53But yeah, it was just a weird a weird first half for the Jags
- 33:57and then the second-half was even crazier considering that
- 33:59first half. But yeah, a good, a good
- 34:01exciting game for the AFCI. Think wild card round
- 34:04definitely. It's a shame and like obviously
- 34:08not not taken to the fact that the Bills are our divisional
- 34:12rivals. I'd like to have seen the Jags
- 34:14progress purely from another team being further up the
- 34:18standings. When it comes down to the
- 34:20playoffs, you kind of you can put into a bowl 5 or 6 teams or
- 34:26five teams. Just say that you're probably
- 34:28going to going to get into the playoffs and progress through to
- 34:30certain rankings. It's nice to see the likes of,
- 34:34you know, the Jags this year progressing to where they've got
- 34:36to the Texans as well. Like they're another team that
- 34:40they're a great team. By the way, if I'm not not
- 34:42putting shade on any of the teams or anything, but they're
- 34:44just getting better and better as years to come and you've got
- 34:47the likes of other teams that are dropping down.
- 34:48It's nice to see new teams coming up and they will be.
- 34:52I think the Jags will be a a scary team going forward.
- 34:56So yeah, ball's the week #2 done and dusted.
- 34:59It's yeah, I believe now we're going to get into the WHIP
- 35:04round. My man.
- 35:05Is that OK with you? Oh, you're muted, Brad.
- 35:16What a rookie error. Let's get against the whip
- 35:20round, shall we? Take 2.
- 35:22Yes, let's Zack, let's get into the whip around.
- 35:25Los Angeles Rams took on the Carolina Panthers and now we've
- 35:29not featured this as our balls of the week probably because of
- 35:35I think the implications of the two games that we've discussed,
- 35:38you know, the rivalry of Green Bay and how close that could
- 35:42have been for the Jags against the Bills.
- 35:44But arguably you've got one of the best games of the weekend
- 35:48here, 65 points combined, which is the highest score of the wild
- 35:52card weekend. I believe Rams taking it on
- 35:56multiple long drives and quick strikes.
- 35:59Just showing that balance there and that's probably the
- 36:01difference. However, you've got to give the
- 36:05Panthers credit where it's due. Who would have expected the
- 36:08Panthers to hang around with the team that arguably most people
- 36:13are predicting for the Super Bowl?
- 36:15And they really, really sort of displayed how slim margins are
- 36:19in the NFL and especially in player football.
- 36:22It's this was a crazy, crazy game.
- 36:26Now, I have a little soft spot for the Rams when we're talking
- 36:29NFC, But if the Panthers could have done this, 8 and 10
- 36:33Panthers took it to the Rams. Probably the best, most complete
- 36:38team in football arguably at the moment.
- 36:42It was just a a really impressive game by the Panthers.
- 36:46Yeah, fully agree. Absolutely fantastic.
- 36:49We'll move on to the next game within the WHIP round.
- 36:52That is the San Francisco 49ers 23, the Philadelphia Eagles 19.
- 36:57Old school playoff football game under 45 points, which is a bit
- 37:02surprising for the two teams that are in there if you ask me,
- 37:04because they're both quite high scoring, high scoring teams in
- 37:07there. But it's it's it's nice seeing a
- 37:11nice little slug going on. The 49ers held the eagles to
- 37:13under 20 points, which is a major defensive benchmark for
- 37:17the Niners without how many injuries that they have had in
- 37:20their defence. San Francisco 49ers also
- 37:23controlled the time possession, which is just basic playoff
- 37:28football. It's the it's the blueprint of
- 37:30it. Get the get the lead, control
- 37:32the ball, control the clock. You've won the game.
- 37:34And I know it sounds tough, but that is the bread and butter of
- 37:37it. You can control that clock and
- 37:38you can be in in command. You are laughing.
- 37:42The Eagles red zone struggles were there.
- 37:45And not just red zone struggles, sideline struggles.
- 37:48A.J. Brown coming to blows once
- 37:52again. Is it his personality?
- 37:54You know, I don't know where is he going to?
- 37:58Let's just say I don't see A.J. Brown fly Eagles flying next
- 38:03year, but it puts a bit of a sour spot onto it.
- 38:07But yeah, there's the whip round for that one.
- 38:09Next game bro. Yeah, the next game was a bit of
- 38:13a dud, really. The ugly one, as you might want
- 38:16to describe it. So Los Angeles charges 3 and New
- 38:20England Patriots 16. I think for this one for me, New
- 38:24England Patriots definitely had a point to prove.
- 38:27So I believe and I'm going to, I'm still, I'm dying on this
- 38:31hill. New England Patriots have still
- 38:33yet to play a genuinely good football team.
- 38:36Los Angeles Chargers are not a genuinely good football team.
- 38:41They are broken. They are upside down.
- 38:45Herbert tries to do it on his own at times.
- 38:48Their receivers just didn't really appear in this game, but
- 38:52they do on counterbalance to that have like one of the sixth,
- 38:56I think it's the 6th or 5th ranked defence in there.
- 38:59And it showed a little bit. You know, Patriots were held to
- 39:0316 points, but the Chargers struggled.
- 39:06They they really struggled on 3rd down.
- 39:07They couldn't get any sort of rhythm going and I just, I need
- 39:12to see New England actually prove it.
- 39:14I, I don't feel like they've proven anything yet.
- 39:18They've had the third easiest strength of schedule, I think,
- 39:22since records have began in that way.
- 39:25And it's just continued in the Wild Card weekend.
- 39:27So I'm really excited actually for next week's games, which
- 39:30we'll get to shortly. But yeah, not too much to scream
- 39:34and shout about with this one. Definitely the ugly game of the
- 39:37weekend for me. Oh, Jim, Sam, I agree with you.
- 39:40As a New England fan as well, I definitely agree with that.
- 39:42And to our last game here, we have research.
- 39:45Cal, close your eyes, please. I know it's a sensitive subject.
- 39:49The Houston Texans 30, Pittsburgh Steelers 6.
- 39:55The Scar Lion says it all. The Texans absolutely dominated
- 39:58the Steelers there. They couldn't get going.
- 40:00Steelers held to single digits, absolutely disastrous for the
- 40:04playoff. For the for their kind of their
- 40:07play of hope a rods future in my opinion has I don't I don't see
- 40:15him coming back next year. I think this playoff is is
- 40:18tough. I think he's a tough loss to
- 40:20have the Houston just scored early and they were forcing
- 40:25Pittsburgh to have to go for them plays for some out of their
- 40:28comfort zones to the hat to go on the field and not just the
- 40:31control of the game, but with the skyline, obviously, but
- 40:34making Pittsburgh having to go for that extra yard every single
- 40:37time, which going up against like Houston defence, which is
- 40:41the best defence in the league in my opinion and probably by
- 40:43the starts. I'm not going to quote that
- 40:44because I don't know factually, but in my opinion they're the
- 40:47best defence by far in the in the. #1 ranked defence.
- 40:53Yeah, and not just that. The balance shows, right.
- 40:56So this, the scoring drives, the stopping, the stopping plays
- 41:01with the DS, clean executions all around.
- 41:03CJ Stroud looked good. I hate saying it, but these boys
- 41:09are good. These boys are good and I only
- 41:12hate this hate it because we play these next round.
- 41:15But yeah, there's not much more to say over then I reckon A rods
- 41:18out of there. Yeah, that's that's how I see
- 41:23it. That's how I see it.
- 41:24But yeah, so that's the week round for this week.
- 41:27You got anything you want to say?
- 41:28And I'll touch on the game before and before we move on to
- 41:31our next. No, no, I think we'll, you know,
- 41:35I think I echo everything you say.
- 41:37Pittsburgh, I've always, not always sorry this season.
- 41:40They've never been convincing, have they?
- 41:42They've had moments, they've had flashes, but they've never been
- 41:44convincing. And they've definitely been
- 41:46found out by a much better team. You've got the Houston Texans
- 41:50and you had the Jags, both from the South, whereas, you know, a
- 41:53week ago you had two teams on the North battling it out.
- 41:56It's almost like I almost wonder.
- 41:59And it was a friend of mine who we were just chatting in a group
- 42:02chat on a fantasy chat just today actually.
- 42:06And it's interesting that if the Ravens had to beat Steelers a
- 42:10week ago, Wood Harbour have been fired this season.
- 42:15Wood Ravens have been able to go on a bit of a run like the
- 42:17Ravens can. It's almost like the Steelers
- 42:21deprived us of what might have been.
- 42:25Sorry, Carl, but it's, it's a bit fraudulent.
- 42:29And I think a rod's probably done.
- 42:33Maybe he's a bit of a weird one. No one really knows and who
- 42:37knows what's going to happen with Tomlin.
- 42:38There's loads of talk, isn't there about him going into the
- 42:41media and things that Bob, time will tell.
- 42:45But there's definitely the hype there or the the rumours are
- 42:48there that the media have got him coming.
- 42:50So it'll be interesting to see what happens over the next days,
- 42:54weeks in Pittsburgh with those two guys.
- 42:58That's it, right? So we've spoke about with the
- 43:01games that happened this weekend, we've got some MVP odds
- 43:04and some coach of the year odds. I want to touch on this with you
- 43:06now. Get your predictions on here.
- 43:08These are from just before this weekend's games because Trevor
- 43:12Lawrence is still on this list. So don't shoot us down for that.
- 43:16Oh, wait, because he's pretty big season.
- 43:20Yeah, big season. MVP odds here.
- 43:24Matt Stafford out in front four to seven.
- 43:26Favourite Drake May, 7 to 5 Trevor Lawrence, 2:50 to 1.
- 43:31Sam Donald, 400 to one. Caleb Williams 500 to 1.
- 43:36MVP Who've he got for it? My heart says Stafford probably
- 43:44deserves it. But the cynicist in me kind of
- 43:52thinks Drake May might get it. I think he's got a real, a real
- 43:59good shout. I mean, the odds are very close,
- 44:01aren't they? I think Stafford deserves it.
- 44:04I think May might get it. So for a non patriots fan here I
- 44:11agree but the reasons why I agree is a look at the weapons
- 44:17around the QBs and it's what they make with them.
- 44:21Weapons around the QB Stafford has poker Stafford has devante 2
- 44:30the best wide receivers in the NFL two reliable sources.
- 44:33Whereas Drake doesn't have he has he has Stefan digs correct
- 44:37He does he has Stefan digs there mass of it also has like 15
- 44:41tight ends that he can rely on. OK.
- 44:43I just feel like the targets are more there for Stafford, which
- 44:47makes his job a little bit easier.
- 44:51I am not taken away from Stafford in any way, shape or
- 44:53form. I think the guy's unreal.
- 44:55I think he's had the best year of his of his career this year.
- 44:58I think he just shows why he is who he is because of what he
- 45:03does on that field. If he won it, as a Patriots fan,
- 45:06if he won it, I wouldn't be decided.
- 45:08I'd be like, you know, this guy deserved it.
- 45:10He did everything there. But at the same time, I just
- 45:13think Drake did a little bit more with what I had around him.
- 45:17Personally, I think it's I think it's two hours race.
- 45:20I don't I don't see from anybody else.
- 45:21I think it's two hours race personally.
- 45:23No, and these awards are always like quite skewed any way out of
- 45:27the it's the media darlings. And you know, we've got the
- 45:29coach of the year there as well to discuss and it's it's always
- 45:34a similar picture, isn't it? It's who's the media darling,
- 45:37who's everyone backing? It's not, it's a little bit like
- 45:41the Pro Bowl in a different way that it's a bit of a popularity
- 45:48contest in a way. You know, not not quite as much
- 45:50as the Pro Bowl obviously, but the coach of the year 1 I think
- 45:54for me is probably a little bit easier to call.
- 45:57I think it is the odds on favourite there.
- 46:00For me, it's Mike Vrabel. He's turned the he's turned the
- 46:06franchise back around, hasn't he?
- 46:07He's come in and almost returned Patriots instantly back to that
- 46:13glory. I think they need to sustain it.
- 46:15Obviously then they're not quite at that Brady stature, so they
- 46:19need to sustain it over a number of years.
- 46:22But for a first year returning coach or a coach at a new team
- 46:27in their first year, he's done a tremendous job.
- 46:29I guess for similar reasons what you've just spoke about.
- 46:32Drake may credit where it's due. It kills me to say, but yeah, I
- 46:36think Brabel's in for the coach of the year.
- 46:39I'd like to think so. It'd be a nice little sweep.
- 46:41You've forgotten both. I'm not going to lie, it would
- 46:43be and it's it's refreshing to see from a patriot from when the
- 46:47entire world hated us for so long and now it seems to afflict
- 46:51the entire world kind of likes us a little bit now and they
- 46:54don't want to admit it. I wouldn't still do.
- 46:56I don't know. I think people are starting to
- 46:58like the patriots. I think people are starting to
- 47:00like the pages are not going to like.
- 47:03But yeah, I would agree there mate.
- 47:04Might might be able there. I'm surprised Ben Johnson not a
- 47:07closer odds, to be fair. That did surprise me, yeah.
- 47:12I am, but I think it's more back end that season, not all, not.
- 47:16Zach, I'm going to have to stop you.
- 47:17Zach, I'm going to have to interrupt you.
- 47:19Sorry. Just as we're recording this
- 47:21live, it's just popped up to me. Now we have some breaking news.
- 47:24Look at this. So I don't know if you've seen
- 47:27this yet, Zach. It's just popped up on my phone.
- 47:29Now as we're as we're recording the Pittsburgh Steelers, head
- 47:33coach Mike Tomlin announces that he's stepping down.
- 47:37So just to confirm what you said earlier, Zach, it's 19 years I
- 47:42believe he's had in charge following their defeat yesterday
- 47:46is yeah, he's he's gone. He gone, He's gone.
- 47:51Well, if you'd have said it started, yeah, that both Harbour
- 47:54and and Tomlin would have been gone at the end of the season.
- 47:58Jeez. I mean, look at the AFC North
- 48:02now you've got, you've got Tomlin's gone.
- 48:04Stefans is gone. It's Stefanski.
- 48:07Sorry, Harbaugh's gone. Who would have thought that
- 48:10Taylor's the only guy sticking around like that's crazy.
- 48:14Yeah, I know, right? Wow, there's some names knocking
- 48:17about there, Researcher. Can't do and the audience can't
- 48:20see you right now, but just give us your.
- 48:24Give us your verdict. Thumbs up, thumbs down.
- 48:26Show us your face. Let us describe this to the
- 48:29audio listener. Oh, just big eyes open.
- 48:36Just the big eyes open. I see.
- 48:38Yeah. What seven ways to is it 17?
- 48:43I'm sorry, how many how many consecutive this is on the fly
- 48:47this by the way, break this kind of caught us off guard it Kyle.
- 48:49How many consecutive seasons has he took you to the to the
- 48:54playoffs? Because yes, it's a big defeat
- 48:59against the Texans, but where does he stand in terms of like
- 49:04what he's done for the club? Is this another like harbour
- 49:08situation where it's yeah, you know, you've done a lot for us.
- 49:11We know we appreciate that you're a good coach and you we
- 49:14appreciate that if you did go somewhere else, you would
- 49:15probably do wonders. But like, what do you like?
- 49:22I don't know, Is it better somewhere else?
- 49:24I just find this absolutely mind blowing that they've done it now
- 49:30and who steps into the place right now?
- 49:33Who steps into that Pittsburgh Steelers route that that
- 49:35Pittsburgh Steelers job because it's I don't create be there.
- 49:41It's crazy, isn't it? It's really difficult to see.
- 49:43And I think to fill those boots, it's it's on that level of not
- 49:48quite, you know, Belichick, is it, you know, not quite that
- 49:51same successful. I'd say they're similar in their
- 49:54characters, aren't they? That they don't quite have
- 50:01obvious people who fit the mould of that franchise.
- 50:05Like when you think of the Steelers, you think of Tomlin.
- 50:09I always remember like the one who was it now?
- 50:13It was the Ravens player running down the sideline and Tomlin
- 50:17stepped into the field. Was it Jacoby?
- 50:21It was like, I just imagine little things like that when I
- 50:26think Steelers and it's Tomlin. Tomlin is Steelers.
- 50:29It's going to be a crazy one to actually see who actually ends
- 50:35up being there and and filling those shoes.
- 50:40Research Carl's actually just sharing now.
- 50:42It's obviously just quite quickly.
- 50:44So it's crazy how quick these odds appear, isn't it?
- 50:47But apparently Chris Shula of the DC, sorry, the DC of the
- 50:53Rams, should I say, is the odds on favourites along with Brian
- 50:57Flores, who we mentioned earlier, Robert Seller and Clint
- 51:01Kubiak up there as well. Really, really interesting and.
- 51:06I love this, by the way. I love this start here.
- 51:09The last time the Steelers hired a new a new head coach, the
- 51:11iPhone didn't exist. That's fantastic that it's kind
- 51:18of caught me off guard a little bit because there were talks
- 51:21throughout the season. Is Tommy ready to go?
- 51:23There's been talks for the past month or so.
- 51:26He's got a media job lined up. He's got a media job lined up
- 51:29and just you going back on like the what ifs on the harbour.
- 51:34If he didn't lose to XY, is everybody has still lost here
- 51:36now? Would he like would he have
- 51:37still lost his job? How many games, big games did
- 51:43Tommy not have to lose to lose his job here?
- 51:46If this skyline to be closer still lost, but closer would he
- 51:49still lost his job? I mean, then I was a bit of a.
- 51:54I think it's been, I, my gut says it was probably in the
- 51:59works anyway. My gut says that, you know, we
- 52:03don't know the full, I don't know the full insurance and outs
- 52:06at this moment. The, the notification was that
- 52:08he stepped down. Whether that's a mutual thing,
- 52:11you know, you never really know because when someone's meant so
- 52:15much to an organisation for so long, you're probably going to
- 52:18give them the respect to publicly be able to step down as
- 52:22opposed to publicly they've been fired.
- 52:24You never really know. But I think it's definitely
- 52:27seemed within the media this year isn't it, that writing's
- 52:30kind of been on the wall that this was potentially is last
- 52:32year. Unless something crazy happened
- 52:34and they went on a big run. It was almost a bit of a, a
- 52:36latch last ditch attempt really getting a rod in for the year.
- 52:41Maybe that's why it was just a one year thing.
- 52:44Yeah, there's there's lots of ifs and buts, but my gut says it
- 52:47was probably done. I know research Cal's just
- 52:51chiming away in the background for the audience.
- 52:53He's. Keyboard he's on fire.
- 52:56He's he's he's he looked tired after that He did he did, but I
- 53:02just think I just think he's he's the face of that Steelers.
- 53:06This could be a a nice little you know, turn around for you.
- 53:11I I well over time with this is breaking news to us.
- 53:14It's kind of shocked for us as such a first time we've got
- 53:18we've had the news kind of come out live there.
- 53:20Credit to to research Carl for getting that typed up and
- 53:22getting on the screen as quick as he did do for us.
- 53:25But yeah Mike Tomlin no longer part of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 53:29I don't see him coaching. I think the rumours will be true
- 53:32when he goes straight into the media.
- 53:33Only time will tell. So yeah, big one on that
- 53:39divisional Round games, Brad. So let's get into that, shall
- 53:41we? Yeah, let's.
- 53:43Do it divisional round games this Saturday and Sunday.
- 53:47We have the AFC divisional round UPS, which would be the Denver
- 53:51Broncos, the Buffalo Bills, sorry, at the Denver Broncos,
- 53:54which is Saturday at 9:30 PM UK time.
- 53:58And then after that we're on Sunday at 8:00 PM UK time.
- 54:01We have the Houston Texans at the New England Patriots for me
- 54:06and no it should be because it's the divisional roundup games 2
- 54:10very very exciting games to watch.
- 54:13Not going to lie that Buffalo Denver game is going to either
- 54:16be a three-point game or either team.
- 54:20I'm not going to name a team because I think Eva team could
- 54:22potentially run away with the game.
- 54:24I. Think it's it's without a doubt
- 54:27the most exciting weekend of football for me.
- 54:29The divisional round games are always the best games of the
- 54:33year. What's crazy, I think with the
- 54:35Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos here is I think you've
- 54:38got the sixth seed at the first seed.
- 54:42And if you'd have put these two names in at the beginning of the
- 54:45season and you just said this is the 6th and first seed, which
- 54:47one's which? There's no way in hell anybody
- 54:50would have said the Denver Broncos are the first seed and
- 54:51Buffalo Bills are 6. I think it's crazy.
- 54:54I think the Broncos have got a distinct advantage that Mile
- 54:57High. Buffalo Bills are going to have
- 55:00a tough game here, but I feel like the experience of playoff
- 55:05football from the Bills from Josh Allen could could be the
- 55:11edge in this one. I think for this particular
- 55:14game, again, I hate it, but I'm probably back in the Bills.
- 55:22I think the experience of the Bills being in the playoffs
- 55:25really helps them out here. But I just there's something
- 55:28about please don't tell us friend Kane, who, by the way,
- 55:31who was a Denver Broncos fan and again as part of our team that
- 55:36we play for in the UK, but you're.
- 55:38Using the word friend very loosely there.
- 55:41Acquaintance. Sorry, acquaintance.
- 55:43Please don't tell me I'm going to say this, but there's
- 55:46something about that Denver Broncos team right now that
- 55:49they're just so exciting to watch.
- 55:52Bonex is just so exciting to watch.
- 55:55And when he got drafted and when he had this hype about him, I
- 55:59just didn't see it to begin with.
- 56:00And then I don't know that draft that that that trading for a for
- 56:06a QB, sorry, trading for the head coach, which is not not
- 56:11normally done has paid off so well for them.
- 56:15And I don't know I'm I'm I'm going I'm going Denver, I'm
- 56:20going Denver on that match for sure.
- 56:22That will. Certainly be an interesting one.
- 56:24I think it's definitely a good one to start the divisional like
- 56:27weekend, isn't it? It's going to be an absolute
- 56:29start. But then, and then it's the
- 56:33Houston Texans and the New England Patriots afterwards.
- 56:37I want to go on record by saying I love my team.
- 56:40I will support my team through thick and thin.
- 56:44But it's been a nice ride. I don't see us progressing any
- 56:47further. No, I've got to agree.
- 56:51I mean, you've got the AFC games starting the Saturday and
- 56:55starting the Sunday slates and, you know, if we're talking UK
- 56:59times and weird early hours fixtures.
- 57:03But I think you're right. Both are going to be good games,
- 57:06I hope. But I'm, I'm sticking to what
- 57:08I've said earlier in the the part that the Texans are a real
- 57:13football team. And it's the first real football
- 57:16team that the Patriots have played this season.
- 57:18And maybe not the first, but you know, in a meaningful game where
- 57:24it's really mad and I think the Texans are going to take it to
- 57:27the Patriots, I'm going even bolder.
- 57:28I'm going to say that the Texans are are going to put up a
- 57:31Pittsburgh Steelers type score against the Patriots.
- 57:35Look, definitely don't want to agree with you.
- 57:38I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't agree with you because I
- 57:41can't go that far. I can't back against my team and
- 57:44then but that as well. So not going to say you're
- 57:47wrong, but I don't disagree with you.
- 57:50OK, we're, we're off the NFC games.
- 57:52Then we have the Sunday 1:00 AM. Oh, sorry, these are these,
- 57:58these are the wrong order from on my screen to the San
- 58:01Francisco 49ers at the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
- 58:05And then we have the Los Angeles Rams at the Chicago Bears.
- 58:09These two, it's hard to say the the the Niners Seahawks game for
- 58:15me is one of them where I'd never expect to see see the
- 58:18Seahawks in the playoffs at the start of this year.
- 58:21I think out of all four games, it's the one I've not got the
- 58:26the most amount of like eagerness to watch.
- 58:30What about yourself on that one? I think it's a weird one because
- 58:35you've got 49ers who are like a shadow of who they should be.
- 58:41They've got so many injuries, they are banged up to high hell
- 58:45and yet they are still winning and winning well.
- 58:50But then you've got the Seahawks, obviously they had the
- 58:52first round bye and for much of the season, along with the Rams
- 58:57have been kind of neck and neck of who who is the best team in
- 58:59football. The one thing for me in this
- 59:02game, I'm not a massive Purdy fan.
- 59:06I'll be honest, I think he is far better than his draft.
- 59:12You know, he is Mr Irrelevant or former Mr Irrelevant and he is
- 59:17far better than that without a shadow of a doubt.
- 59:20But for me, seeing Sam Darnold as the number one seed of the
- 59:25NFC, taking the team to the divisional round, it's such a
- 59:31redemption for him. And you know, he had a great
- 59:34season at the Vikings last year and his last game there stunk.
- 59:39And I just I just hope because my gut says the Niners have got
- 59:44this one, I think, but I just hope it's not an absolute
- 59:49stinker for Darnold because it'd be so good for him.
- 59:51He's he's a likeable guy. Everyone thought he was done
- 59:54after The Jets and he's had a real nice redemption and and and
- 59:58earn. He's earned a good contract.
- 1:00:00He really has. And it'd be nice to see if he
- 1:00:04does go out this round, which like, say, I think he might.
- 1:00:08And maybe you won't great and great, but I hope it's a good
- 1:00:12game for him and I hope this could be a close one.
- 1:00:15This could be a close one. I agree.
- 1:00:17He deserves it. He's he's definitely Sean and
- 1:00:20he's one of them examples of moving out of you know, you
- 1:00:24might look bad in a in a, in a sorry, you might, you might you
- 1:00:29might look bad in an organisation, But if you come
- 1:00:32out of the organisation to go elsewhere, you can show you kind
- 1:00:35of colours and him and Baker may for the two prime examples of
- 1:00:38that and move on. Then to the Los Angeles Rams at
- 1:00:41the Chicago Bears. I think this is up there with a
- 1:00:43Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills kind of game.
- 1:00:46This has the potential for me to be an absolute storm.
- 1:00:51I that the potential for me on this is this could be one of the
- 1:00:56highest scoring playoff games that's ever been out.
- 1:01:01It has that kind of for me, it has that kind of that hype
- 1:01:04around it to really high scoring offences at this moment in time,
- 1:01:08to inform offences as well to exciting offences.
- 1:01:12I'm all for this. This would be a great game for
- 1:01:14me. I think the difference with this
- 1:01:16one for the Bears are if they fall behind like they did in the
- 1:01:22wild card, I don't see them coming back.
- 1:01:25I think the Rams are just too good and they're going to
- 1:01:31struggle if they let themselves slip early on.
- 1:01:35But I hope you're right and I hope it's an exciting,
- 1:01:39competitive game and it's it's potentially the game of the
- 1:01:45weekend for me. I think every game here has got
- 1:01:49a lot of potential. You're probably right in the
- 1:01:52Niners. Seahawks is probably the one
- 1:01:53that I don't look forward to the most, despite it being a good
- 1:01:58game on paper. But this one, the Rams and the
- 1:02:01Bears could be the game of the weekend.
- 1:02:04And I think here you've got the NFC champion in the Rams and I
- 1:02:12think you've potentially got on the Saturday, the AFC champion
- 1:02:17in the Bills. And I'm going to make a
- 1:02:21prediction here, and I'm going to ask you for yours, Zach, Who
- 1:02:24have you got winning the Super Bowl?
- 1:02:28Because I'm saying Rams. Texans.
- 1:02:37Wow. I mean, that would be exciting.
- 1:02:39They've never been there before. That would be very exciting.
- 1:02:42I think that Texans team right now is the best team in the NFL
- 1:02:49in form. Forget stats and all that jazz,
- 1:02:52right to watch a team that is in form right now, that Texans team
- 1:02:56for me is I, you're right. I'll go as bold as same.
- 1:03:03The winner of that game wins the Super Bowl for me out of the
- 1:03:07Texans and New England, because I think both of them are in
- 1:03:10form. But I don't think New England
- 1:03:12have what it takes to take take on the Texans.
- 1:03:14I'm just saying that now. But for me, Texans win the Super
- 1:03:16Bowl for my prediction on the NFC games.
- 1:03:18By the way, just right quickly, because I think research to jot
- 1:03:21these down, I'm going to go Niners.
- 1:03:26You've got Rams on you. I'm going to Bears.
- 1:03:28I'm backing my boy Caleb. He's my, he's my #1QB in
- 1:03:30fantasy. I'm backing my boy Caleb.
- 1:03:32Let's go for it. Caleb, you're taking me.
- 1:03:34You're taking me there. I see this as a moment, OK?
- 1:03:40Houston Bears Super Bowl. I think it's going to be
- 1:03:45electric. I think it's going to be
- 1:03:47absolutely electric. Who just said that's like, yeah.
- 1:03:51What's great for the audience who if they're watching that,
- 1:03:54obviously they can't see Callum, whereas we can.
- 1:03:57And it's funny, when you said the Texans going to win the
- 1:04:00Super Bowl, myself and research Kyle just pulled the exact same
- 1:04:03face. Which?
- 1:04:05Probably says everything there, but yeah, it'll be an
- 1:04:08interesting round. Definitely.
- 1:04:10I'm I'm looking forward to it. We love an underdog story, we
- 1:04:13love an underdog story. So they divisional round,
- 1:04:16divisional round games that I couldn't this weekend.
- 1:04:19Be sure to check it out and obviously we'll have everything
- 1:04:21from that weekend next week in next weeks episode as well.
- 1:04:25And just while Brad mentioned that there as well, if you are
- 1:04:27watching this, if you are listening to this and you'll be
- 1:04:30able, you can watch it. Spotify and YouTube have video
- 1:04:32versions of these podcasts. Feel free to head over and watch
- 1:04:35them. All the fancy graphics are on
- 1:04:37the screens from all the the the stuff that research Cal does for
- 1:04:41us and and things. All the information's on there.
- 1:04:42So come over and drop us a follow and subscribe while
- 1:04:45you're there. Anyway, Brad, we're going to
- 1:04:47move on from the divisional games to a little feature that
- 1:04:53we do called All Other Balls. OK, so I'm just going to hit the
- 1:04:57Jingle music and then we're going to get into it from there.
- 1:04:59My mum. Oh, I love that short Jingle.
- 1:05:04It's just nice and in your face, but boom, all the balls.
- 1:05:07So do me a favour, explain to the to the audience who've never
- 1:05:11listened to this podcast before, what all the balls is.
- 1:05:15Yeah, so all of the balls is where we touch on other sports
- 1:05:19from around the globe, around the country, around the town, if
- 1:05:24you like, which we'll be touching on shortly.
- 1:05:26It's where we pick up features that aren't the NFL and
- 1:05:30highlight what's going on in the world of sport.
- 1:05:34It says it is what it's on the tin.
- 1:05:36Sorry. And with this we're going to get
- 1:05:38into the first all the balls. My story of the week is
- 1:05:41Macclesfield. Now, I'm not a football soccer
- 1:05:46fan as much. I love watching all all kinds of
- 1:05:48sports. I'll watch it on TVI don't
- 1:05:49really follow a team and things like that.
- 1:05:51But Macclesfield, now they beat Crystal Palace, who are the
- 1:05:56reigning FA Cup champions by the way.
- 1:05:57They beat them two, one at the weekend and it's the biggest
- 1:06:03ever FA Cup upset in terms of like league places between
- 1:06:07teams. And I love and I love this like
- 1:06:09underdog kind of mentality and with the word goal, but to the
- 1:06:14goal server by a guy called Paul Dawson.
- 1:06:16Sorry, I was looking at my notes here by a guy called Paul
- 1:06:19Dawson, who's a motorway supervisor, right?
- 1:06:22And Isaac Buckley Ricketts, who used to play at Man City, but
- 1:06:27he's now obviously working, playing part time down at
- 1:06:29Macclesfield. This is mental.
- 1:06:31This guy's working on M62 filling pot oils, right?
- 1:06:37And cousin scores winning goal or first got no between while
- 1:06:42the news that I saw because he scores a goal in the FA Cup to
- 1:06:45put his team through right. That and that money, that prize
- 1:06:49money for a small team for like Macclesfield going up in the
- 1:06:51next round is is club change. It's mental for him.
- 1:06:55A fun fact about Macclesfield there though is the owner bought
- 1:06:59the club on right move as a drunken bite after a night out
- 1:07:03after the Phoenix club went up for sale following the original
- 1:07:06Macclesfield Town ground busting COVID.
- 1:07:09Which is ludicrous, absolutely ludicrous.
- 1:07:14And he's also managed by Wayne Rooney's brother.
- 1:07:17This is a long story for me. I, I'm going to go on, I'm going
- 1:07:19to go on Sky Better and gamble responsibly.
- 1:07:22I'm going to back Macclesfield to get to do something as FA
- 1:07:25Cup. I'm going to put £0.50 each way
- 1:07:27on them and see where they go from there, see what odds I can
- 1:07:29get. But that's that's the story,
- 1:07:31number one of all of the balls and it's Macclesfield dominating
- 1:07:36the FA Cup this weekend. I'll see you, my man.
- 1:07:40Yeah, I mean, that's that's a crazy story.
- 1:07:42That's a real David and Goliath without being too cliche, isn't
- 1:07:45it? But that's just that's mad,
- 1:07:47absolutely mad to beat the reigning FA Cup champions as
- 1:07:50well. It's just insane.
- 1:07:53Insane. Yeah.
- 1:07:55I mean, for our next story, going to bring this one much
- 1:07:58closer to home, actually. So Zach, I know you will be
- 1:08:03aware of this, but for the audience, Zack and I are big
- 1:08:08rugby league fans. So, you know, growing up in a
- 1:08:11mining town in Yorkshire, you kind of bleed rugby, rugby
- 1:08:17league, you know, and being a castle for Tigers fan myself,
- 1:08:23you form not attachments as such, but the rugby league
- 1:08:28community is a real family community.
- 1:08:32Like you can give banter to other teams, you've got your
- 1:08:35rivalries and you'll give them all the stick at the games.
- 1:08:38But you don't really tend to get the, the actual hatred as such.
- 1:08:45And you don't get the, the venom that you get between fan bases,
- 1:08:49maybe in other sports such as football, for example, soccer.
- 1:08:53And it's quite sad really to hear about what's going on at
- 1:08:58Featherstone Rovers. So just a bit of back story.
- 1:09:01So Featherstone Rovers really close club to Castleford, like
- 1:09:05an old rival. And there's always that bit of
- 1:09:09banter between the two teams. And so last year they they came
- 1:09:14into some financial difficulties.
- 1:09:16And it's no secret if you, if you know anything about the
- 1:09:19sport, that it's not the most profitable sport in the world.
- 1:09:23But for me, as well as the NFL, rugby league is without a doubt
- 1:09:27one of the most exciting sports to watch.
- 1:09:30You know, you watch a nil, nil game of rugby league and you
- 1:09:32know, you've watched an absolute battle on the field.
- 1:09:36And it's, it's difficult with teams maintaining the, the
- 1:09:43necessary funding, sponsorships, TV money.
- 1:09:48There's, there's so much there which we won't go into.
- 1:09:50But long and short is FEV came up short and basically we're
- 1:09:54threatened with a winding up petition.
- 1:09:56And then in December 25, just before Christmas, they formally
- 1:09:58entered administration due to to debts and and things like that
- 1:10:02that the team have accrued moving on a little bit into
- 1:10:07January. So the Rugby Football League.
- 1:10:09So the RFL confirmed that the Featherstone Rovers will not
- 1:10:11compete in the 2026 Betfred Championship or the Challenge
- 1:10:15Cup and have not been granted RFL membership for the season.
- 1:10:20So this comes despite there actually being a consortium that
- 1:10:23submitted a bid to take ownership and rescue the club,
- 1:10:27but the RFL made a decision. RFL being the governing body of
- 1:10:32a sport that wants to grow and has clubs like Featherstone with
- 1:10:37a rich history, but they ruled they didn't meet the necessary
- 1:10:41governance and sustainability criteria because it was
- 1:10:44considered too closely tied to the previous ownership and said
- 1:10:49it wasn't basically secure enough in its its finances.
- 1:10:54It's it's heartbreaking, It's heartbreaking.
- 1:10:57And like, for me, I, I don't know what this really means for
- 1:11:00the club because if they're not playing in the Championship,
- 1:11:04where do they play? Will they play?
- 1:11:07It's not quite clear on how all this looks, but it's really
- 1:11:10interesting what other clubs and communities have gone out and
- 1:11:12done. One of the nice ones I saw was
- 1:11:14Whitehaven. They have offered free member,
- 1:11:17not free membership, free admission to all of their games
- 1:11:21for Featherstone season ticket holders.
- 1:11:23Now I know it's a bit of a journey, but I think it's just a
- 1:11:25good gesture and it shows that community, that community
- 1:11:29spirit, that family spirit of, of rugby league and it's it's
- 1:11:35really gutting. It's really gutting for the club
- 1:11:37and I hope, I hope they can come through it.
- 1:11:39The other, the other side, really.
- 1:11:42Yeah, this is the cast fan. You grow up 18th of you do you
- 1:11:49know there's a good and that's the that's the rival that we
- 1:11:51spoke about earlier within in the NFL and it's the rival that
- 1:11:55you want, but you ate them on the field and off the field.
- 1:11:58You have a drink with you have a drink with them like the
- 1:12:02community within the rugby league scene is is unreal.
- 1:12:07Like within the NFL, for instance, you'll see your team
- 1:12:11play it with with 60,000 people plus watching this team, we're
- 1:12:16talking about 6 to 10,000 people at most watching your team here
- 1:12:22and that that that commute that these people are playing for
- 1:12:26fav. We went to school with them.
- 1:12:28There's professionals, it's a professional sport, but because
- 1:12:32of the, the, the upbringing at the heart, the way we have you
- 1:12:35play in a young age, there's a strong chance to get into
- 1:12:38professional spot that way. And seeing people losing their
- 1:12:40jobs because because, well, because of ownership's done what
- 1:12:46they've done money wise. You know, there's a lot of
- 1:12:50speculation out there which you can't say is true or not true
- 1:12:53and what where where the money's gone and etcetera and who's been
- 1:12:56paid and who haven't been paid. But on the outside it looks shit
- 1:13:00and it is shit for a lot of people that are going there to
- 1:13:03try to earn a wage. And now these guys that were
- 1:13:07earning a wage to the family have no longer got clubs to play
- 1:13:09for and liver championship team. So it's got a lot of players
- 1:13:12that are either back end of their career or just not good
- 1:13:16enough to go to that next level of the Super League.
- 1:13:20These are, you know, in the championship you'll have the the
- 1:13:24borderline part time teams, but they're not, they're still full
- 1:13:26time. So they're not getting paid an
- 1:13:27absolute tonne. But they've lost out on what
- 1:13:31they've been doing all the life. And it's a heartbreaking seat.
- 1:13:34Regardless to what team it is. You don't want to see it.
- 1:13:36And it hits close to home because it's down the road, it's
- 1:13:4010 minutes down the road for us. It's it could happen to anybody.
- 1:13:44And now it's kind of like rally calls getting going.
- 1:13:47Personally, I think forever now done.
- 1:13:50I think the ownership behind it have killed.
- 1:13:55This is my views by the way, just my personal views.
- 1:13:58I mean the ownership have killed it.
- 1:14:00I think there's no time back from it.
- 1:14:02It's selfish. And they could have sold up
- 1:14:04years ago when they should have done made some money, but he saw
- 1:14:07it coming in and didn't do anything from there.
- 1:14:09So it's going to be a stadiums up there.
- 1:14:10It'll be houses in the next 15 year.
- 1:14:13And it's a sad sight to see because you don't just change
- 1:14:17teams in mobile league, you don't just move to next local
- 1:14:20team because you've been brought all that.
- 1:14:23You don't do that. It's sad.
- 1:14:25It's sad to see. It is.
- 1:14:27It really, really is. But yeah.
- 1:14:32So that's anything else on that one, mate, before we move on to
- 1:14:36no, I think. It's some deal.
- 1:14:40Sweet, right. We're going to move on to the
- 1:14:42final part of the evening, something a little bit lighter
- 1:14:46for you all. If you did TuneIn or listen to
- 1:14:48the last podcast that we did, which was just before Christmas,
- 1:14:51we introduced Carl's Conundrum. OK, And just right quickly, if
- 1:14:55you thank you very much for the people that got in touch on the
- 1:14:57comments on YouTube and the messages that we've got through
- 1:14:59our our our socials. The answer to Carl's Conundrum
- 1:15:04was Tom Brady. So well done.
- 1:15:06If you got that right. I should have got that right
- 1:15:08straight away. But when you're recording this
- 1:15:10and you get asked the question on the spot, it's a little bit
- 1:15:12like Dave in the headlights type thing.
- 1:15:14So well done on that. If you got that.
- 1:15:16We're going to bring in Carl Sternum again.
- 1:15:18Now we're going to ask you a question.
- 1:15:19We'll get this on our social again afterwards.
- 1:15:22Just quickly on that on the social side of things at ABNF
- 1:15:27podcast across all your socials get followed because we're going

- 1:16:26We've all got Google but I'm not using it right.
- 1:16:29Right. First NFL first round pick.
- 1:16:33There's an obvious answer to me, but there's a modern day bias
- 1:16:38obvious answer and it's the Cleveland Browns, but I don't
- 1:16:42think it's right. I don't think it's as obvious as
- 1:16:45you think. I mean, you've got your teams
- 1:16:47who've been in like purgatory for years, haven't you?
- 1:16:50But if you look at the history of the NFL, teams go through
- 1:16:52waves. This is a tough one.
- 1:16:55I'll be interested to see what the the answer is next week for
- 1:16:57sure. Do you?

- 1:17:22Perfect, right? And then that's us done.
- 1:17:25That is US done. It's been a jam packed episode
- 1:17:27this week. It's been a few UPS, a few downs
- 1:17:29for myself and Brad, teething problems, but we're getting
