- 0:39have nearly been forgotten. Every episode asks
- 0:42a simple question. Did you know? Your host, Pastor
- 0:49David. Welcome to the Voices of Life Did You
- 0:54Know series. I'm Pastor David. And today we turn
- 0:57our attention to one part of October 3rd and
- 1:01another part of October 4th. Dates that remind
- 1:04us how faith, freedom, and exploration have shaped
- 1:08our world. But before we look skyward, we begin
- 1:12with a moment of gratitude that changed a nation.
- 1:16On October 3rd, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln
- 1:21established an annual National Thanksgiving.
- 1:24So did you know President Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving
- 1:27proclamation wasn't the first in American history,
- 1:31but it became the one that made Thanksgiving
- 1:34annual. In 1789, President George Washington
- 1:38had called for a National Day of Thanks, and
- 1:42other presidents followed occasionally, but on
- 1:45October 3, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War,
- 1:49President Lincoln issued the Presidential Proclamation
- 1:51No. 106, inviting Americans to set apart the
- 1:58last Thursday of November as a day of thanksgiving
- 2:01and praise. to Almighty God. He wrote that even
- 2:07amid the Civil War of unequaled magnitude, the
- 2:11nation had still been blessed with fruitful fields,
- 2:15expanding borders, and divine mercy. Lincoln's
- 2:20words were deeply spiritual, calling Americans
- 2:23to humility and repentance, echoing 2 Chronicles
- 2:287 verse 14, If my people who are called by my
- 2:32name, will humble themselves and pray. That proclamation
- 2:37began a tradition renewed every year by succeeding
- 2:41presidents, but it wasn't until 1941, nearly
- 2:4680 years later, that Congress officially established
- 2:49Thanksgiving as a federal holiday, fixing it
- 2:53as the fourth Thursday of November from Lincoln's
- 2:56wartime call to Congress's peacetime law. Thanksgiving
- 3:01became not just a feast, but a national act of
- 3:05remembrance and revival. We will move back in
- 3:10time to October 4th, 1226. On this day, Francis
- 3:17of Assisi was laid to rest in his hometown. His
- 3:20life of poverty, humility, and service inspired
- 3:24generations to see Christ in the poor and creation
- 3:28itself as a reflection of God's glory. October
- 3:324th became the Feast of St. Francis, celebrated
- 3:36across Christian traditions, a reminder that
- 3:39revival begins not in power, but in surrender.
- 3:45Going up 500 years, on October 4th, On October
- 4:004, 1957, the world looked upward. The Soviet
- 4:23Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial
- 4:27satellite to orbit the Earth. Its faint radio
- 4:30beeps echoed across the globe, a sound that startled
- 4:34the United States and signaled the dawn of the
- 4:38space age, or I should say the space race. America
- 4:43responded swiftly. Within months, scientists
- 4:47and leaders accelerated research leading to the
- 4:50creation of nasa in 1958. what began as a moment
- 4:55of shock became a race for discovery the space
- 4:58race a contest not only of technology but a vision
- 5:0212 years later that race carried neil armstrong
- 5:06to the moon where he declared that's one small
- 5:10step for man one giant leap for mankind sputnik
- 5:16saunch reminded humanity that exploration is
- 5:21part of our divine design to seek to learn and
- 5:26to marvel at the heavens that declare the glory
- 5:30of god so on october 4th and october 3rd we see
- 5:37tapestry of history woven with three threads
- 5:42faith saint francis looked heavenward in devotion
- 5:46freedom washington fought for a nation's soul
- 5:51An exploration. Sputnik opened the skies. And
- 5:56just one day earlier, Lincoln called a divided
- 6:00people to Thanksgiving and revival. And I bring
- 6:05back to Lincoln's proclamation. And I think the
- 6:09words are so important. It wasn't just Thanksgiving
- 6:13and praise. It was Thanksgiving and praise to
- 6:17Almighty God. That was included in the document
- 6:21in his... declaration. But in the 1941 version
- 6:26from Congress, God was left out. Not sure why,
- 6:31but guess what? He was still there. From the
- 6:36altar to the battlefield to the stars, each moment
- 6:40whispers that same truth. When hearts turn toward
- 6:44God, nations rise and humanity dares to look
- 6:49beyond itself. This is Voices of Life. Did You
- 6:53Know series, a ministry of the Church for Life.
- 6:56I'm Pastor David, and we'll see you next time.
- 6:59It concludes this edition of Voices of Life.
- 7:03Did you know? History gives us more than dates
- 7:06and names. It gives us stories. Stories of courage
- 7:10and failure, faith and doubt, freedom and sacrifice,
- 7:14and people who face moments that change the course
- 7:17of history. But history isn't just about what
- 7:20happened then. It's about what we can learn from
- 7:22it now. Thank you for joining Pastor David in
- 7:25Voices of Life. Until our next journey through
- 7:28history, keep asking questions, keep learning,
- 7:32and remember, you never know what you might discover
- 7:35when you simply ask. Did you know? This is Voices
- 7:39of Life. Until next time.
