- 3:19to the show. My name is Will Walden, I'm your
- 3:21host. And on this episode Elon Musk is
- 3:25going to be talking about how SpaceX is Starship, will make
- 3:31humans multiplanetary. This is from the Starship press
- 3:35conference that he had over the weekend and this is the very end
- 3:41of the presentation. So if you've already listened to
- 3:44the presentation, you don't need to listen to this.
- 3:46You've already It all. But this is basically Ilan
- 3:49saying these are the things we need to do in order to get
- 3:52humans to Mars, to, in order to make humanity multiplanetary.
- 3:56And before I get into, what I want to say, thank you to
- 3:58Audible for all of their support.
- 4:00You can go into show notes, and click the link for Audible, and
- 4:04you will get two free audio books.
- 4:07So thank you audible. And here we go.
- 4:10With Elon Musk talking about Starship To Mars, exactly.
- 4:27So yeah. So A rapidly reusable over the
- 4:36launcher. Rocket is, is a rapidly.
- 4:39Reusable rocket is required for alliteration.
- 4:46The, for achieve a port for getting a breakthrough in, in
- 4:50cost of access to space that you don't throw the Rockets way,
- 4:52every, every flight, but another key step is refilling on orbit
- 4:57so that the Starship can get to orbit with, let's say 150 tons.
- 5:04Of payload for the moon or Mars or Beyond, and then you can get
- 5:10Tankard to fill up its propellant tanks and so that it
- 5:13can depart from low earth orbit with 1,200 tons of propellants.
- 5:18This is a very big thing so that your, your Delta velocity is
- 5:25enough to transport 150, 150. Tons to the surface of the Moon
- 5:30or Mars. With with full reusability and
- 5:36orbital refilling, which is essentially, the overall
- 5:40refilling is actually a simplified version of what
- 5:42SpaceX does in organ in docking with the space station.
- 5:46So it's actually harder to dock with the space station than it
- 5:49is to do orbital refilling. But in practicing in docking
- 5:53with the space station SpaceX is has also learnt how to
- 5:59Rendezvous and dock in orbit. In a complex environment.
- 6:04So this is one of the other critical pieces of the puzzle
- 6:08needed needed to establish a base on the moon and Mars as
- 6:12City. Ultimately, And yeah, so those
- 6:17those are the critical ingredients so we think will be
- 6:20very exciting to have a base on the moon.
- 6:24Even if it's just a science base that we have recruited.
- 6:28For example, we have a base at and Antarctica many, many
- 6:31countries have bases in Antarctica for science research.
- 6:36And this would be an incredible area of research.
- 6:39So whether or not people want to live on the moon, there's
- 6:42definitely a lot of science to be done.
- 6:45And I think it's closed as well. So that's that would be quite
- 6:51exciting to do. And then of course, we can go
- 6:57other to other places in the solar system like Saturn.
- 7:01And but the critical thing that we need to focus on I think is
- 7:05the fastest path to a self-sustaining City on Mars.
- 7:10This is the first is the fundamental thing.
- 7:21As far as we know, as far as we know, we are the only
- 7:24Consciousness. So the only life that's out
- 7:26there. They might be other life, but
- 7:27we've seen no signs of it. And people often ask me, if you
- 7:30weren't, what do you know about the aliens and, and I'm like,
- 7:33man, I tell you if I'm pretty sure, I'd know, you know, if the
- 7:36aliens I've seen not seen any sign of aliens and said, look,
- 7:41what is the military hiding aliens in Area, 51 or something?
- 7:44You know, that's popular meme ever.
- 7:48Let me tell you, You at the biggest the fastest way to
- 7:51increase defense funding would be to bring out like hey, we
- 7:54found an alien feel like more money for defense.
- 7:58Definitely guarantee their truck and I would be like, on display
- 8:04in two seconds. So yeah.
- 8:07So there the reality is, as far as we know, this is the only
- 8:15place at least in this part of the Galaxy, or in the mochi.
- 8:19A way where there is consciousness and it's taken a
- 8:22long time for us to get to this point.
- 8:25You know, according to the the geological records that's been
- 8:29around for about four and a half billion years old, it was mostly
- 8:32molten magma for about a half a billion years.
- 8:34So but still several billion years with at least bacterial
- 8:38life and multicellular life for several hundred million years.
- 8:44But because interesting part like the, the sun is gradually
- 8:48getting hotter and bigger and over time, even in the absence
- 8:52of global warming, man-made stuff that the sun will expand,
- 8:58and it will, it will overheat the Earth.
- 9:00My guess is probably. This is on human timescales.
- 9:05This is a long time but it's there's only, you know, several
- 9:09hundred million years left. That's all, that's all we got,
- 9:12okay? Several hundred million years,
- 9:14but if it's sort of, in, if from an evolutionary standpoint,
- 9:20basically, if it took an extra 10% longer for conscious life to
- 9:24evolve on Earth, it would evolve at all because it would have
- 9:28been incinerated by the Sun. So, so what I'm saying is that,
- 9:34it's, it appears that Consciousness is a very rare and
- 9:37precious thing and we should take whatever steps we can to
- 9:42preserve the light of Consciousness.
- 9:44And the window, the window has been open only now, after four
- 9:48and a half billion years, is that window?
- 9:50Open, there's a long time to wait and it might not stay open
- 9:53for long. I'm pretty optimistic by nature,
- 9:57but there's some chance. There's some chance that window
- 10:00will not be open for long. I think we should become a
- 10:03multipath civilization. While that window is open.
- 10:08And if we do, I think the probable Outcome for Earth is
- 10:12even better if we cuz then you know, Mars could help Earth one
- 10:15day. You know?
- 10:17And so I think we should really do our very best to become a
- 10:21multi-planet species and to extend Consciousness beyond
- 10:24Earth, and we should do it now. Thank you.
