Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/20: Defense Punches Back, Two-Minute Drills, Recapping Joint Practices
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Day two of joint practices between the Patriots and Eagles,
- 0:02Speaker 1: and the defenses hit back a little bit. Let's break
- 0:05Speaker 1: it down. Welcome everybody to the Patriots Training Camp cast
- 0:16Speaker 1: presented by New Balance and guys. We wrapped it up today.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Fortunately that's the end of training camp for the most part.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We'll get a couple practices next week walk through probably
- 0:24Speaker 1: stuff not anything we can report on, but yes, today
- 0:27Speaker 1: active second joint practice with the Eagles.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Got Jack with us.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Here from the Porem post game show filling in for
- 0:33Speaker 1: Polyp and I think today let's let's start with a
- 0:36Speaker 1: positive because came in saying it felt like the Patriots
- 0:39Speaker 1: defense didn't do a great job against the run yesterday.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Didn't feel like they did a great job containing some
- 0:43Speaker 1: of those big plays. Today was a better story. Felt
- 0:45Speaker 1: like they came out today with that in mind. Not
- 0:48Speaker 1: a lot of room for Saquon Barkley out there.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Yeah, seemed like they bottled up Saquon better today, especially
- 0:52Speaker 3: on those interior runs that he hit them on yesterday.
- 0:55Speaker 4: And that's what you wanted to see.
- 0:57Speaker 3: You wanted to see Milon Williams and Corey Dirten and
- 0:59Speaker 3: a job a farmer and those guys inside.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Beach is a little tighter and a little bit.
- 1:04Speaker 3: More buttoned up inside, So that was good to see.
- 1:07Speaker 3: I actually thought that, you know, there were some times
- 1:09Speaker 3: where the coverage was pretty good down the field that
- 1:11Speaker 3: made Jalen Hurts hold the ball. Marcus Jones a couple
- 1:14Speaker 3: of interceptions as well, one really nice one and then
- 1:17Speaker 3: a pick six on another tip drill kind of interception.
- 1:20Speaker 3: So overall, I thought the Patriots both defenses, and we're
- 1:23Speaker 3: going to get to the Eagles defense in a second,
- 1:25Speaker 3: both defenses. This tends to happen in these joint practices.
- 1:29Speaker 3: One day goes one way, the other day goes another.
- 1:31Speaker 3: The defense watches the tape, they're feeling a little bit
- 1:34Speaker 3: down on themselves, and they come back out and they
- 1:36Speaker 3: punch back, And I thought, both defenses did that today.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Jack, your first joint practice the summer, and what were
- 1:41Speaker 1: your impressions that start with the Patriots defense before we
- 1:43Speaker 1: move over to the offense.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Well, what I loved was it was the juice that
- 1:47Speaker 2: they had.
- 1:47Speaker 5: They had that edge, and you could tell that they
- 1:49Speaker 5: probably got it a little bit in meetings yesterday, right,
- 1:51Speaker 5: they had to be better, and they came out and
- 1:53Speaker 5: I love the edge they played with.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Obviously a couple scraps that.
- 1:56Speaker 5: You know, we don't encourage, but we observed, you know, certainly, Yeah,
- 2:00Speaker 5: just scrabble pushing and shoving Noe Foles, but no one
- 2:02Speaker 5: doing anything yet. You saw a guy like Christian Barmore
- 2:04Speaker 5: come in and bring some heat, and I thought, that's
- 2:06Speaker 5: what I like from the Patriots defense is a response
- 2:08Speaker 5: that's definitely what you wanted to see, just culture wise.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah, a little bit of personnell not notice that Craig
- 2:13Speaker 1: Woodson did take part in team drills. Yeah, maybe he
- 2:15Speaker 1: got a little bit banged up. Reggie Gilliam on the
- 2:17Speaker 1: other side, he's had some rest days too. I think
- 2:19Speaker 1: Crable's taking extra good care of our fullback. He doesn't
- 2:21Speaker 1: want to see really good because he's gonna have a
- 2:23Speaker 1: lot of training. Rind, he's gonna have a little car crashes
- 2:25Speaker 1: this year. Yeah, maybe trying to limit that those hits.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So let's flip over to the other side of the
- 2:29Speaker 1: ball with with Drake may and the offense where it
- 2:30Speaker 1: felt like the Eagles. Eagles defense came to play today
- 2:33Speaker 1: and it kind of thought that they would come back
- 2:35Speaker 1: with something to prove after yesterday felt like Drake kind
- 2:37Speaker 1: of carved him up a little bit.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, yesterday.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I'm sure you mentioned Jack that the Patriots defense hurt it.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Vic Fangio must have watched that tape yesterday and was like,
- 2:46Speaker 3: absolutely not.
- 2:47Speaker 4: This is not acceptable.
- 2:48Speaker 3: That's a really, really good Eagles defense, So getting them
- 2:52Speaker 3: two days in a row is probably going to be unlikely,
- 2:54Speaker 3: especially blocking Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis two days in
- 2:57Speaker 3: a row. So ninety specifically, who's Ordon Davis? Noticed him
- 3:01Speaker 3: a bunch. He was in the backfield a lot, He
- 3:03Speaker 3: was dent in pockets and stuffing runs, and he was
- 3:06Speaker 3: really active in this practice. So I thought the interior
- 3:09Speaker 3: pressure was felt a little bit more today. Maybe that
- 3:12Speaker 3: led to some of the aar and throws that we
- 3:13Speaker 3: saw from Drake May But I also thought Quinnon, Mitchell
- 3:16Speaker 3: and Riek Woollen bounced back a little bit too in
- 3:18Speaker 3: the team periods against the Patriots wide receivers. So just overall,
- 3:22Speaker 3: the Eagles stars kind of came back today and said, hey,
- 3:25Speaker 3: you know, we got pushed around a little bit yesterday.
- 3:27Speaker 4: That's not going to happen again.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Not without a couple of highlights though, And there was
- 3:30Speaker 1: one a j Brown catch in the end zone. That
- 3:33Speaker 1: was awesome. I mean that relationship continues to evolve. Not
- 3:35Speaker 1: quite as active as he was yesterday, Jack, but I
- 3:38Speaker 1: continue to see really good things out of him out
- 3:40Speaker 1: of the confidence that Drake May has to throw the
- 3:42Speaker 1: ball down the field to Romeo Dobbs. It seems like
- 3:44Speaker 1: even though Eagles punched back a little bit today, Patriot's
- 3:47Speaker 1: still making some progress.
- 3:48Speaker 5: We talked about it on PU But I mean, to
- 3:50Speaker 5: be in this position, have Drake May working with Aj
- 3:53Speaker 5: Brown and have a true star quarterback working with a
- 3:55Speaker 5: true star receiver.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I mean, what was it last time?
- 3:58Speaker 5: Probably Moss and Brain really last time I was a
- 4:01Speaker 5: child that when that happened.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So it's a beautiful site and I just like the
- 4:04Speaker 2: response as well.
- 4:05Speaker 5: To stay on the positive note from the offense there,
- 4:07Speaker 5: you throw the interception, which that's one that's football, you
- 4:10Speaker 5: know what I mean. It sucks where it's a sudden
- 4:12Speaker 5: change in a game where it's the same.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Thing, you're have another shot.
- 4:15Speaker 5: I'm glad they got another shot at the end of
- 4:16Speaker 5: the practice there in that red zone, high red drill.
- 4:19Speaker 5: But it was nice to see them respond even though
- 4:21Speaker 5: they face the adversity with a third long and not
- 4:24Speaker 5: great plays in that period.
- 4:25Speaker 2: They scored a touchdown though, that's what matters.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that was nice Patriot play, as Paul likes to
- 4:29Speaker 3: call them. Smooth post to Romeo dobs And got him open,
- 4:32Speaker 3: hit him in stride, hit him on time, and that
- 4:35Speaker 3: was a nice little bounce back. It was like one
- 4:37Speaker 3: play that that first drive. It bounced off of three
- 4:41Speaker 3: guys and ends up in an Eagles.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Hey, it happens like those.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Diving that catch and that was kind of, you know, unfortunate,
- 4:47Speaker 3: I would say, more than it was like a mistake
- 4:49Speaker 3: or anything like that by anybody.
- 4:51Speaker 4: The one that he threw earlier in.
- 4:52Speaker 3: The practice though, the pick six that rikuol And had
- 4:54Speaker 3: in the red zone, he admitted it was late in
- 4:56Speaker 3: the red zone. And you can't be late in the
- 4:58Speaker 3: red zone as a quarter, especially throwing outside the numbers
- 5:01Speaker 3: in the flats that's gonna go the other way. So
- 5:04Speaker 3: definitely some improvement needed in the red zone, I would say.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah, just to really draw out the picture of final
- 5:10Speaker 1: red zone period, each team got two shots at it.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Very first play for.
- 5:13Speaker 1: New England's first team offense, tipball interception. Like we said,
- 5:16Speaker 1: the defense came out and Jalen Hurts had a good
- 5:19Speaker 1: good day right down the field on them TD on
- 5:22Speaker 1: Kilndel wildor there in the end zone. They did stop
- 5:24Speaker 1: the two point conversion's first team offense for the Patriots
- 5:27Speaker 1: comes back out a little bit better, nice touchdown not
- 5:29Speaker 1: to Romeo Dobbs, and then defense coming up with a
- 5:33Speaker 1: nice second day in a row. The second team defense
- 5:35Speaker 1: comes up the pass break up there in the end
- 5:37Speaker 1: zone to finish things up from Marcellus Dials.
- 5:39Speaker 2: So that's kind of how it went.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Don't sell booty short, don't don't forget about it, booty
- 5:44Speaker 3: booty back shoulder fade from Tommy DeVito to wrap up practice.
- 5:48Speaker 3: So I guess if we're scoring it right. The Eagles
- 5:52Speaker 3: scored twice and the Patriots scored three times, so the
- 5:56Speaker 3: Patriots won again win the practice.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Yeah, that's how we're well, I think, though, guys.
- 6:01Speaker 1: There's so much talking like who won the practice and
- 6:03Speaker 1: this and that, like great work for the Patriots. There's
- 6:05Speaker 1: definitely not the feeling of panic we had two years
- 6:07Speaker 1: ago when they went out there in a joint practice
- 6:09Speaker 1: against Eagles and got pushed all around, which Drake May
- 6:11Speaker 1: said he watched a little bit of yeah earlier this
- 6:14Speaker 1: week and was I guess the word wouldn't be impressed.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Maybe impressed in a bad way, but it wasn't that.
- 6:19Speaker 1: It was a solid showing from the Patriots. They're going
- 6:21Speaker 1: to get back on the field on Saturday night. We'll
- 6:23Speaker 1: see what it looks like in terms of starters, playing
- 6:25Speaker 1: and all that. But I think as a you know,
- 6:26Speaker 1: as Patriots fan, you're looking it's less than three weeks
- 6:29Speaker 1: they're gonna be walking into Seattle.
- 6:30Speaker 4: It's a huge challenge facing them.
- 6:31Speaker 2: There's no time to lose.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Licking your chops and everyone does want a crown of winner,
- 6:34Speaker 5: I feel like in these joint practice right but the
- 6:36Speaker 5: reality is that's two contenders just going to battle.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:38Speaker 5: A question I have for you guys, you know, putting
- 6:40Speaker 5: the host hat on, What's something you learned about this
- 6:42Speaker 5: Patriots team over the yesterday right now?
- 6:45Speaker 4: He's a point guard, you know.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I would just say, and Evan and I have talked
- 6:48Speaker 1: a lot about this is how does Mike Vrabel in
- 6:50Speaker 1: his second year kind of recreate that that identity that
- 6:53Speaker 1: this team.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Had, which is just an aggressive, physical team.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I mean, you talked about it, you felt that, and
- 6:58Speaker 1: I think That's what came out to me over these
- 7:00Speaker 1: last two days. I've kind of been lukewarm on camp
- 7:03Speaker 1: so far. It's been there have been moments that have
- 7:05Speaker 1: been good, there have been moments that have been bad.
- 7:06Speaker 1: But you know, it didn't feel like there's been an
- 7:08Speaker 1: overarching storyline to me. It all kind of came together
- 7:12Speaker 1: here in these last two days, and I see this
- 7:14Speaker 1: is a team that's gonna play physical, that's gonna play
- 7:16Speaker 1: with that same style. They're gonna be their own thing.
- 7:18Speaker 1: It's gonna be unique. But I like that personality they're
- 7:20Speaker 1: playing with.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I just go with the juxtaposition of what this looked
- 7:23Speaker 3: like two years ago against this exact same team, and
- 7:26Speaker 3: even deeper than that, AJ Brown and Millan Williams are
- 7:29Speaker 3: on the other sideline, and now the Patriots. Both those
- 7:31Speaker 3: guys are Patriots. The Patriots have stars too.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Now.
- 7:34Speaker 3: You know, Drake May's a star, AJ Brown's a star,
- 7:36Speaker 3: Millon Williams is a star. I know Christian Gonzales didn't practice,
- 7:40Speaker 3: but he's also a star. And it felt so lopsided
- 7:43Speaker 3: two years ago. Not only what was going on on
- 7:45Speaker 3: the field was lopsided, but the star power was lopsided too.
- 7:48Speaker 3: In Philly's favor, and I give a lot of credit
- 7:51Speaker 3: to Mike Rabel, Elliott Wolf, Ryan Cowden. In two years,
- 7:54Speaker 3: they have gotten some real heavy hitters, some frontline players
- 7:58Speaker 3: on this roster that when you go up against a
- 8:00Speaker 3: team that has Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley and Jalen
- 8:04Speaker 3: Carter and all these star players, you have your own
- 8:07Speaker 3: guys that can go toe to toe with them. So
- 8:10Speaker 3: it really shows just how far this roster has come
- 8:13Speaker 3: in just two years. Like it feels like that was
- 8:15Speaker 3: a lifetime ago, but it wasn't that long ago that
- 8:17Speaker 3: the Patriots were a four win team and the Eagles
- 8:20Speaker 3: were a super Bowl team. And now it looks like
- 8:22Speaker 3: they're even on a practice field, which is good to see.
- 8:24Speaker 5: So many teams go around and around the wheel. It's
- 8:26Speaker 5: nice to see a successful rebuild. Huah, it just got
- 8:29Speaker 5: right back. Yeah, well true, we'll see how it goes.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I mean, we got to get in the regular season
- 8:32Speaker 1: two and it's coming fast. That's going to do it
- 8:35Speaker 1: for this year's camp cast, but tune into the Patriots
- 8:37Speaker 1: pregame show and postgame show.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Jack of course hosting that.
- 8:40Speaker 1: With myself and Paul Perillo, will be there six forty
- 8:42Speaker 1: five on Saturday night. We'll see how these two teams
- 8:45Speaker 1: stack up on the game field.
