- 0:00Tyler: Welcome to the Sound Neighbors Podcast, episode 1.
- 0:13Tyler: This is our Sunday edition for South Bay and Johnson Point.
- 0:16Tyler: I'm Tyler.
- 0:17Jean: And I'm Jean.
- 0:19Jean: This is our week ahead show, so grab your calendar.
- 0:22Jean: Everything we mention is on the town square calendar at soundneighbors.com.
- 0:26Tyler: In this episode, a quick look back, a packed week of concerts.
- 0:29Tyler: A salmon bar crawl, and a haunted history walk.
- 0:33Tyler: And two measures on your ballot, where Jean and I are going to take opposite sides.
- 0:36Tyler: Let's get into it.
- 0:38Jean: First, the week in about a minute.
- 0:42Jean: Ballots went out Thursday, more than 205,000 of them across Thurston County.
- 0:47Tyler: Near Johnson Point, deputies arrested two men after the same home was burglarized twice.
- 0:53Tyler: The second time, security cameras the homeowner had just installed caught two vehicles and a suspect.
- 0:58Tyler: And deputies recovered about $33,000 in stolen property.
- 1:02Jean: Olympia approved a $17.7 million contract to build the first phase of Jolene Unsulled Community Park on Yellm Highway.
- 1:10Jean: And flu activity in the county is low right now.
- 1:13Tyler: The thing that stuck with me all week is that burglary.
- 1:16Tyler: The cameras only went up after the first break-in.
- 1:19Jean: And that footage basically handed deputies the case.
- 1:22Jean: It doesn't have to be fancy either.
- 1:24Jean: A doorbell camera, a motion light, and actually locking the shed.
- 1:29Tyler: Out on the point, a lot of us still leave stuff open.
- 1:31Tyler: I'm including myself in that.
- 1:33Jean: Me too.
- 1:34Jean: OK, this week I'm locking the shed.
- 1:36Jean: Now the calendar.
- 1:40Jean: Monday is Indigenous Peoples Day.
- 1:42Jean: Olympia and the Squaxon Island Tribe are hosting a free celebration at Squaxon Park on East Bay Drive,
- 1:48Jean: from 1130 to 230.
- 1:50Jean: Tribal members will dance, sing, speak, and share stories.
- 1:54Jean: Parking is limited, so there's a free shuttle every 30 minutes starting at 11
- 1:59Jean: from the farmer's market lot.
- 2:00Tyler: That's a great one for kids.
- 2:02Tyler: And honestly, the shuttle is the way to go.
- 2:04Tyler: Squaxon Park parking on the nice day is rough.
- 2:07Jean: Agreed.
- 2:08Jean: Organizers are also asking people to walk, bike, carpool, or take transit if they can.
- 2:13Tyler: Monday night, the Timberline Choir performs at 7 at the Koval Center in Lacey
- 2:17Tyler: on 6th Avenue Northeast.
- 2:19Tyler: It's the first of three straight nights of school music there.
- 2:22Jean: Love that.
- 2:23Jean: Drivers, one more Monday note.
- 2:25Jean: Concrete work on I-5 between Lacey and DuPont is expected to move to the southbound lanes.
- 2:30Jean: Ramp closures run about 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday,
- 2:34Jean: and longer Thursday and Friday nights.
- 2:37Jean: The Marvin Road on ramp and both Martin Way East exits are on the list,
- 2:40Jean: and the speed limit drops to 45 in the work zone.
- 2:43Tyler: And speed cameras may be on, so if you're heading soft late,
- 2:46Tyler: give yourself time and ease off the gas.
- 2:48Tyler: Tuesday, the North Thurston High Orchestra plays at 7 at the Koval Center.
- 2:52Tyler: The North Thurston School Board meets from 6 to 8 at Evergreen Forest Elementary on Marvin Road,
- 2:57Tyler: with public comment open.
- 2:59Tyler: And the Port of Olympia Commission meets at 4.
- 3:01Jean: For the sports fans, Timberline Volleyball is 9 and 0, and they play at Peninsula on Tuesday.
- 3:06Jean: Last week, they beat North Thurston for the first time since 2017,
- 3:11Jean: and Kinley Smith had 39 kills.
- 3:13OK.
- 3:14Tyler: Quick time out for anyone who doesn't follow Volleyball.
- 3:16Tyler: What's the kill?
- 3:17Jean: A kill is an attack, usually a hard spike that the other team can't return,
- 3:21Jean: so it wins the point right there.
- 3:23Tyler: So 39 kills means she ended 39 rallies by herself.
- 3:26Jean: Pretty much.
- 3:27Jean: That's a big night by anyone's standard.
- 3:29Tyler: Then I'll be watching Tuesday's score.
- 3:34Jean: Wednesday night at 7, the Washington Center has Abra Kadabra, an Abba tribute show.
- 3:39Jean: Tickets run $57 to $77.
- 3:42Jean: If you'd rather stay close and free, the Aspire Choir has an informants at the Koval Center.
- 3:46Jean: Also at 7, and St. Michael Parrish holds its weekly Wednesdays at the Well Series.
- 3:51Tyler: I respect anyone who sings along to Mamma Mia with a few hundred strangers on a Wednesday.
- 3:55Jean: Count me in.
- 3:56Tyler: Wednesday is also an election date.
- 3:58Tyler: The county's main voting center at the Elections Division in Tumwater opens October 14th.
- 4:03Tyler: That's where you can vote in person, get a replacement ballot, or register.
- 4:07Tyler: Weekday hours are 8 to 430.
- 4:09Jean: And Thursday is the day to check your mailbox.
- 4:12Jean: If your ballot hasn't arrived by Thursday, October 15th, call elections at 360.
- 4:16786-5408.
- 4:18Tyler: That's 360-786-5408.
- 4:22Tyler: Thursday also kicks off the weekend run of live music at the farmer's market on Capitol Way.
- 4:26Tyler: 11 to 2, Thursday through Sunday.
- 4:29Jean: Quick note before the ballot talk.
- 4:31Jean: Soundneighbors is free, and it runs on value for value.
- 4:34Jean: If this calendar saves you some time, you can give back.
- 4:36Jean: Just email hello at soundneighbors.com.
- 4:39Jean: More on that at the end.
- 4:42Tyler: Okay, the ballot.
- 4:45Tyler: Here's the first measure.
- 4:46Tyler: Straight.
- 4:48Tyler: Lacy Fire District 3's Proposition 1 would let the district issue up to $98.3 million in bonds.
- 4:56Tyler: The money would pay for a relocated station 32, a new station 36 in Hawks Prairie, North
- 5:02Tyler: of I-5, a regional live fire training facility, and a logistics warehouse.
- 5:08Tyler: The district estimates the cost at 22 to 25 cents per thousand dollars of assessed value.
- 5:15Tyler: On a $500,000 home, that's about $8 to $11 a month.
- 5:19Jean: So we said we'd take sides.
- 5:21Jean: Tyler, you're for it?
- 5:23Tyler: I'm leaning yes.
- 5:25Tyler: Hawks Prairie has grown a lot, and a new station North of I-5 means a station where the people
- 5:31Tyler: are.
- 5:32Tyler: For roughly $8 to $11 a month on a typical home, that seems like a reasonable price for faster
- 5:37Tyler: help on the worst day of someone's life.
- 5:40Jean: That's a fair point.
- 5:42Jean: And I don't disagree about the station.
- 5:44Jean: My hesitation is the total.
- 5:46Jean: $98 million is a lot of money.
- 5:49Jean: And it's not just stations.
- 5:50Jean: It also covers a training facility and a warehouse, and I'd want to understand why those need
- 5:55Jean: to be in the same bond.
- 5:57Tyler: That's reasonable.
- 5:59Tyler: My take is firefighters have to train somewhere, and equipment has to be stored somewhere.
- 6:05Tyler: But I get wanting to see the case for each piece.
- 6:09Jean: And it's not the only thing on the ballot asking for money.
- 6:12Jean: $8 to $11 a month adds up when you stack it with other measures.
- 6:16Tyler: That's true.
- 6:17Tyler: I think we both agree the new station makes sense, and we land in different places on
- 6:22Tyler: the full package.
- 6:24Jean: Exactly.
- 6:25Jean: And I'd say read the district's project list in cost estimates, they're linked in our
- 6:29Jean: story.
- 6:30Jean: And decide for yourself.
- 6:31Jean: The second measure, straight, Timberland Regional Libraries Proposition 1 is a levy lid lift.
- 6:39Jean: If it passes, the library's property tax rate goes from $0.22 to $0.35 per $1,000 of
- 6:46Jean: assessed value.
- 6:48Jean: The library estimates Thurston County homeowners would pay about $69 more a year.
- 6:55Jean: And the city says it would raise about $14 million in the first year.
- 6:59Jean: The money would restore staffing, extend hours, cut wait times on popular titles, and catch
- 7:05Jean: up on deferred maintenance.
- 7:08Jean: The 29 library system faces a $3.8 million shortfall.
- 7:13Jean: The Olympia City Council voted to support it.
- 7:16Tyler: And this time we flip, junior for this one.
- 7:20Jean: I am.
- 7:21Jean: $69 a year is less than $6 a month.
- 7:25Jean: For that, you get libraries open more hours, more staff, and shorter wait lists.
- 7:31Jean: And with a $3.8 million gap, the alternative is probably fewer hours, not more.
- 7:38Tyler: I hear that.
- 7:40Tyler: And I love the library.
- 7:42Tyler: My concern is the size of the jump.
- 7:46Tyler: Going from $0.22 to $0.35 is a rate increase of almost 60%.
- 7:51Tyler: That's a big step in one go.
- 7:54Jean: That's a fair way to look at it.
- 7:57Jean: In dollars, it's modest.
- 7:58Jean: As a percentage, it's big.
- 8:01Jean: But with our true.
- 8:03Tyler: Right.
- 8:04Tyler: And it lands on the same ballot as the fire bond.
- 8:06Tyler: So for some families, it's the total that matters.
- 8:10Jean: Which is the same point I made about the fire bond, so I can't really argue with you
- 8:13Jean: there.
- 8:14Tyler: There you go.
- 8:15Tyler: I'd say we both want the library's healthy.
- 8:18Tyler: We just weigh the cost a little differently.
- 8:21Jean: And that's okay.
- 8:22Jean: That's what the ballot's for.
- 8:26Tyler: Back to the fun stuff.
- 8:28Tyler: Friday, you've got three options.
- 8:30Tyler: The Puget Sound Esterium is hosting a salmon-themed bar crawl called Swim Sip Survive.
- 8:36Tyler: Starting at 5.30 at 309 State Avenue Northeast.
- 8:40Tyler: There's an Olympia history in Haunted Walking Tour at 6, and comedian Gary Gohman is at
- 8:45Tyler: the Capitol Theater at 8.
- 8:48Jean: Salmon, ghosts, or stand-up.
- 8:49Jean: I love that's an actual choice.
- 8:51Tyler: I do the Haunted Walk.
- 8:53Tyler: Bring a jacket.
- 8:54Jean: Saturday night, the Washington Center has the happiest concert on Earth, a Disney tribute
- 8:58Jean: benefit at 7, and the Krypton 4th Avenue has Fern Spores with OK Tiger and Fox & Bones
- 9:04Jean: at 8.
- 9:05Jean: Tickets are $12.
- 9:06Tyler: Harlequin Productions has Sanctuary City in Our Town running at the State Theater through
- 9:11Tyler: the 25th, Showtime's Vary, and next Sunday, the 18th, the Olympia Film Society Kids Club
- 9:17Tyler: movie is at the Capitol Theater at 1, free for kids $12 and under.
- 9:21Jean: Movie than a market lunch.
- 9:23Jean: That's a solid Sunday.
- 9:24Jean: And the Bulletin Board always says it, confirm with the organizer before you go.
- 9:28Jean: One more item where you might hear two sides.
- 9:30Jean: City of Olympia staff are proposing utility rate increases, 4.5% for drinking water, 6.5
- 9:36Jean: for waste, 8.7 for stormwater, and 9.5 for wastewater.
- 9:41Jean: That's about $19.51 more on the average bi-monthly bill, or roughly 5.5% overall.
- 9:47Jean: The public hearing is October 27th.
- 9:49Jean: This only applies to City of Olympia utility customers.
- 9:52Tyler: I'll take the skeptical side on this one.
- 9:55Tyler: 1950 every two months is real money for a lot of households, especially on top of everything
- 10:00Tyler: else on the ballot.
- 10:01Jean: That's fair.
- 10:02Jean: I'd push back a little though.
- 10:03Jean: Water, sewer, and stormwater systems are expensive to keep running, and the overall increase is
- 10:08Jean: about 5.5%.
- 10:09Jean: I'd want to hear the city's reasons that the hearing before saying no.
- 10:13Tyler: That's reasonable.
- 10:14Tyler: I'd want to hear them too.
- 10:15Tyler: Maybe the takeaway is the same either way.
- 10:17Tyler: Show up on the 27th or ascend to comment.
- 10:20Jean: Agreed.
- 10:21Jean: And thanks for keeping it friendly partner.
- 10:22Tyler: Always.
- 10:23Tyler: A few dates further out.
- 10:25Tyler: On October 20th, the County Commissioners take public comment at 3.30 at the courthouse
- 10:30Tyler: atrium on a proposed Thurston Conservation District rates and charges system.
- 10:35Tyler: The same evening, Timberline High hosts a military family game night with crafts, 5.30 to 7.
- 10:41Jean: The Chinook Middle School band plays on the 22nd.
- 10:44Jean: The Nisqually Reach Nature Center has an illustrated nature journal workshop on the 25th.
- 10:49Jean: And there's no schoolPhiladelphia in\\\\\\\\estinal plaint)",30Traditional forheast conferences.
