- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:46Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Podcast show in the world.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Twelthy or strong, We've got a great show for you
- 0:52Speaker 1: this week.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Hello.
- 0:53Speaker 1: If you're watching on YouTube, if you're listening through whatever
- 0:57Speaker 1: audio platform you're on, it's great to be I need
- 1:00Speaker 1: your ears.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I'm Jeff Warren. I'm here at my buddy Eric Leonard Eric.
- 1:03Speaker 1: But you got some new artwork there in your little
- 1:07Speaker 1: studio area in your basement. I love AI and I'm
- 1:10Speaker 1: not talking about for folks listening. I'm not talking about
- 1:13Speaker 1: the tech. I love the AI. The tapestry that you
- 1:18Speaker 1: have right there. Oh, it's fantastic. It looks great.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Thanks, it's good. I watched the first two shows and
- 1:24Speaker 3: I'm like, man, I got nothing going on here but
- 1:27Speaker 3: the beer fridge in wood paneling. And I was like, yeah,
- 1:30Speaker 3: I gotta I gotta spruce this up a little bit.
- 1:32Speaker 3: So you got doct a good purchase.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yes, you got doc of course, I.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Mean Ducks Docs. Usually he was always here over top
- 1:39Speaker 3: of me. Yes, it seems like like Jesus. But now
- 1:42Speaker 3: he's back there looking over my shoulder.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yes, so looks great, looks great.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And uh yeah, yeah, we got Look, folks, we got
- 1:49Speaker 1: a great show this week, a lot of stuff. We've
- 1:52Speaker 1: got a great interview that we're gonna be getting to
- 1:53Speaker 1: what we're thrown down on the table this week. We've
- 1:56Speaker 1: got Dave Howman from Bloggingtheboys dot Com and the Writer's
- 1:59Speaker 1: Block podcast joining us for a dive into what the
- 2:02Speaker 1: NFC East is actually looking like, especially after the NFL
- 2:06Speaker 1: Draft and free agency. What every team in the NFC
- 2:10Speaker 1: East has been doing. We're gonna get into that again,
- 2:12Speaker 1: that's what we're thrown down on the table. But Eric
- 2:14Speaker 1: and I are gonna start off talking about this Phillies
- 2:16Speaker 1: team and the fact that they really don't have much
- 2:18Speaker 1: of an offensive identity at this point. We'll dive into it,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and then from there we're gonna get into some NBA talk.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Of course, with the postseason now underway, some bizarre stuff
- 2:29Speaker 1: going on for sure in the NBA. It's making the
- 2:32Speaker 1: postseason very, very interesting. Then we're going to get into
- 2:36Speaker 1: draft lotteries. Do we like draft lotteries? Are they fair?
- 2:40Speaker 1: Give our thoughts there. Then we're gonna rank the Eagles
- 2:43Speaker 1: drafts over the past five years in terms of, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: what our favorite drafts were and what we think were
- 2:50Speaker 1: the best Eagles drafts over the past five years. So
- 2:54Speaker 1: with that being said, Eric Buddy, let's get started with
- 2:56Speaker 1: this Philadelphia Phillies team. What we've seen from them. Pitching
- 3:00Speaker 1: not horrible by any stretch of the imagination. Look, they're
- 3:03Speaker 1: still second in the NL least as of us recording
- 3:05Speaker 1: this here on May seven, twenty twenty five. Like I said,
- 3:09Speaker 1: like their offensive identity has yet to really manifest itself
- 3:13Speaker 1: this season. We know they're a power hitting club, and
- 3:18Speaker 1: there are some major power hitters on this team, but
- 3:22Speaker 1: that power consistency still really hasn't happened at all this season.
- 3:27Speaker 1: We can we can look at specific players, of course,
- 3:30Speaker 1: like Kyle Schwarber. Okay, he is absolutely killing it this season.
- 3:35Speaker 1: There's nothing to really analyze with him. When it comes
- 3:38Speaker 1: to his offensive prowess this season, I think forty to
- 3:43Speaker 1: fifty home runs for him is not out of the
- 3:46Speaker 1: realm of possibility. But after that, you've got Bryce Harper
- 3:49Speaker 1: who's been in a very prolonged slump, and when it
- 3:53Speaker 1: comes to power, I think he's just had two home
- 3:55Speaker 1: runs at his last fifty nine at bats. I mean,
- 3:58Speaker 1: it's time to start wondering possibly how injuries have affected
- 4:02Speaker 1: him physically and affected his power to be in his
- 4:06Speaker 1: fourteenth season here in Major League Baseball, and of course
- 4:10Speaker 1: you have a slew of other Phillies that just are
- 4:14Speaker 1: not getting it done from an offensive standpoint. Like I
- 4:17Speaker 1: there is no offensive identity when it comes to this
- 4:19Speaker 1: Phillies team here, and I don't know it's it's I
- 4:23Speaker 1: don't want to say I'm so concerned about it because
- 4:25Speaker 1: it's still quote early this season, and a lot of
- 4:28Speaker 1: folks are saying, oh, Okay, we're getting to the point
- 4:29Speaker 1: where you really can't say that it's early this season.
- 4:32Speaker 1: But I mean May, we still have the entire summer
- 4:36Speaker 1: to go through, and you know what's going to happen
- 4:38Speaker 1: with this team towards the latter part of the season.
- 4:41Speaker 1: That's when it really does count. So I'm hoping that
- 4:44Speaker 1: power consistency really starts coming around, you know, as we're
- 4:49Speaker 1: getting into getting into the month of May. Here, man,
- 4:51Speaker 1: what are your thoughts here?
- 4:53Speaker 3: Well, it's funny because I everything I wrote down my
- 4:55Speaker 3: notes is to you know, attack their meager offensive outputs
- 4:59Speaker 3: so far the season, but they won seven zero tonight,
- 5:02Speaker 3: h Trade Turner had a big, big home run, fine will,
- 5:06Speaker 3: I know, but he was batting three oh seven this
- 5:07Speaker 3: year the Mets one as well, so there's still two
- 5:10Speaker 3: games back. But outside of tonight's game, you know, you
- 5:14Speaker 3: look at it. I mean good overall basic stats batting
- 5:18Speaker 3: average OPS is kind of in the top ten across
- 5:21Speaker 3: the board in Major League Baseball. But some deeper stats
- 5:26Speaker 3: I pulled today. They're fifteenth overall at bats per home
- 5:29Speaker 3: run at thirty two point one point nine. That's right,
- 5:33Speaker 3: literally right in the middle. Their fifteenth overall out of
- 5:35Speaker 3: thirty teams. And when you're when you're supposed to be
- 5:39Speaker 3: a power hitting team, you're kind of middling road, in
- 5:41Speaker 3: the middle of the road in terms of hitting home runs.
- 5:44Speaker 3: It's tough to win games, tough to score runs. But
- 5:47Speaker 3: these two stats really jumped out at me and kind
- 5:49Speaker 3: of speaks to the lack of hitting when it matters.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Twenty fifth overall ground grounded and double plays at point
- 5:58Speaker 3: zero seven to seven. That's a bad stat. You don't
- 6:01Speaker 3: want to be good. No, And probably the worst one
- 6:04Speaker 3: is twenty seventh overall and runners left in scoring position
- 6:07Speaker 3: at three point ninety seven. They're they're pretty much at
- 6:10Speaker 3: the you know, in the basement for for those two stats,
- 6:13Speaker 3: which means they're not you know, they're not they're not
- 6:15Speaker 3: hitting when guys are on base, they're grinding into double plays,
- 6:18Speaker 3: making easier on the other team. You know, we talked
- 6:22Speaker 3: about the Mets, and offensively, you know they're they're not
- 6:26Speaker 3: a juggernaut quite yet. But what did what did concern
- 6:29Speaker 3: me was how the Phillies played them in their three
- 6:32Speaker 3: games set a couple of weeks ago, where the Mets
- 6:35Speaker 3: just handed their asses to them, and offensively they were
- 6:38Speaker 3: terrible the Phillies in those three games. It was really
- 6:42Speaker 3: not the kind of series you wanted to have against
- 6:43Speaker 3: the team that knocked you out of the playoffs, in
- 6:45Speaker 3: your biggest rivals they play again in June. This is
- 6:50Speaker 3: a very streaky offensive team, thank goodness. The pitching has
- 6:54Speaker 3: been solid, has been consistent, because as we know, the
- 6:58Speaker 3: offense is gonna be up and down all year and
- 7:01Speaker 3: that's just how this team is built. But they're also
- 7:03Speaker 3: getting older, so that that bouncing up and down is
- 7:06Speaker 3: going to take longer to occur over time, unfortunately, because
- 7:09Speaker 3: you're gonna start to have injuries. There's no way you're
- 7:11Speaker 3: gonna avoid it with this team. Yeah, your offensive players.
- 7:16Speaker 3: So they I'm hoping they get hot here soon because
- 7:19Speaker 3: it's beginning of May. They've won a couple of games
- 7:21Speaker 3: here twenty one and fifteen. But yeah, I think I
- 7:25Speaker 3: said in the previous show, you kind of wanted to
- 7:27Speaker 3: be kind of wanted to come like guns firing out
- 7:30Speaker 3: of the gate. Yeah, didn't why they did it in
- 7:32Speaker 3: the very beginning of the season, but just not just
- 7:34Speaker 3: not looking like that now.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Yeah, the first three series they won, and then after
- 7:37Speaker 1: that it was just manned right off, basically right off
- 7:40Speaker 1: a cliff. But then again, you look at this team, Eric,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and it's kind of what we've thought, and it seems
- 7:45Speaker 1: like it's what the Phillies front office thought. Concentrate on
- 7:48Speaker 1: some fantastic pitching and then if and when the hitting
- 7:53Speaker 1: comes around, it'll come around. And it's gonna be spotty
- 7:56Speaker 1: here and there. I don't know if you're going to
- 7:58Speaker 1: hang your hat on that going into potentially a postseason run,
- 8:02Speaker 1: which that is the expectation. But how we thought the
- 8:05Speaker 1: pitching was going to work and be more dominant than
- 8:10Speaker 1: the hitting, I mean, that's actually happened. So I guess
- 8:12Speaker 1: what the Phillies front office wanted to do this offseason.
- 8:16Speaker 2: It's kind of working here at this point. Again, second
- 8:19Speaker 2: in the division.
- 8:21Speaker 3: It is, you know, like I said, I'm worried about
- 8:26Speaker 3: because of the age and a lack of consistency, and
- 8:30Speaker 3: they're already a streaky team. Like I mean, he oh
- 8:34Speaker 3: my god, I just thought Castianos is the all time
- 8:39Speaker 3: Like he will scorch he will scorch earth for ten
- 8:43Speaker 3: ten days in a row, yeah, and then just fall
- 8:46Speaker 3: into oblivion for a weeks. Yeah, And like I kind
- 8:51Speaker 3: of wish there was more consistency across the board with
- 8:53Speaker 3: this team. But this is what you paid for, and
- 8:55Speaker 3: this is how you've gotten to the postseason the past
- 8:57Speaker 3: three seasons. Like you, just the pitching keeps up. Maybe,
- 9:02Speaker 3: you know, maybe Andrew Paynter comes up at some point,
- 9:04Speaker 3: does somehow Aiden Miller, Justin Crawford make an appearance down
- 9:08Speaker 3: the road because Justine injuries.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Dude, Justin Crawford is absolutely killing it in Lehigh Valley
- 9:13Speaker 1: at this point.
- 9:14Speaker 2: He's killing it.
- 9:15Speaker 3: I know they're both, they're both they're both both expected
- 9:21Speaker 3: to hit the league in twenty twenty six, but who knows,
- 9:23Speaker 3: you know, Yeah, and I hope they I hope we
- 9:28Speaker 3: don't see them in a trade to bring in someone
- 9:30Speaker 3: else down the road because we do have the injuries.
- 9:32Speaker 3: But you know, they want tonight and just one game
- 9:35Speaker 3: at a time. I sound like a baseball player post
- 9:38Speaker 3: game interview, because that really is what this team is,
- 9:40Speaker 3: you know what I mean, Like I love this team,
- 9:43Speaker 3: but my god, I just wish some of the young
- 9:46Speaker 3: guys would step up. Yeah, Stott and Bomb And that's
- 9:49Speaker 3: we talked about in the previous show a bunch of
- 9:51Speaker 3: times like this is the year we need at least
- 9:53Speaker 3: one or two of these guys to like start to
- 9:55Speaker 3: take the mantle from another one of the older players.
- 9:57Speaker 3: But just I mean, Alec Baum is missing person, missing
- 10:02Speaker 3: an action like yes, like on the back of a
- 10:05Speaker 3: milk cart, and he's been terrible. Yeah.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Well, it's going to be interesting to see where this
- 10:09Speaker 1: team goes in these next few series here. You know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I think when when you look at the New York
- 10:14Speaker 1: Mets and their quote dominance within the division, they they've
- 10:19Speaker 1: had a very very favorable schedule. The Phillies have had
- 10:22Speaker 1: a schedule where it has been a little tougher. Yes,
- 10:25Speaker 1: everybody else to play everybody in this league, and things
- 10:29Speaker 1: are are spread out throughout the schedules for all of
- 10:34Speaker 1: these teams. But at the end of the day, you know,
- 10:37Speaker 1: the Phillies are going to get some ease here and
- 10:39Speaker 1: there in terms of their schedule, of course. So anyway,
- 10:43Speaker 1: that being said, with regard to the Phillies, Eric, let's
- 10:45Speaker 1: get into some NBA talk here, a couple different topics
- 10:49Speaker 1: we wanted to dive into, and folks, no sixers, because
- 10:52Speaker 1: there's just really nothing at this point to talk about
- 10:55Speaker 1: with this damn team except for the fact that it
- 10:58Speaker 1: seems like Alton brand is going to be back in
- 10:59Speaker 1: the UH front office.
- 11:01Speaker 2: From what I've read, Eric, great.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Oh good, great, thank thank god. Right exactly, he was
- 11:07Speaker 3: a disastrous free and signing and a front office disaster.
- 11:11Speaker 3: And with let's bring him back with that. This is
- 11:13Speaker 3: the same this is the same damn city that you
- 11:15Speaker 3: know just keeps bringing Tomorrow, Rubin Tomorrow back. Yes, the Phillies.
- 11:20Speaker 3: He ran him into the I mean, God bless him.
- 11:22Speaker 3: He was part of the eight team, but like ran
- 11:24Speaker 3: him into the ground, didn't do the right things. Anyway,
- 11:26Speaker 3: let's bring him back and put him in the booth
- 11:28Speaker 3: so we know he's Eric or he god damn exactly,
- 11:30Speaker 3: he's in there.
- 11:30Speaker 2: God he sucks well.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Getting into this NBA discussion here on the episode this
- 11:36Speaker 1: week here read an article and wanted to bring this
- 11:39Speaker 1: up because it deals with NBC and what they are
- 11:43Speaker 1: going to be doing from a promo standpoint. So, after
- 11:47Speaker 1: reacquiring NBA, writes last summer, the NBC, the network itself
- 11:53Speaker 1: in NBC Sports, they've been doing some good things by
- 11:57Speaker 1: bringing in some solid talent, hiring so pretty good talent,
- 12:01Speaker 1: bringing back you know, round Ball Rock. But then yesterday
- 12:05Speaker 1: news came out that they're going to be using AI
- 12:08Speaker 1: to recreate Jim Fagan's voice for promotional materials. Now, for folks,
- 12:13Speaker 1: if you're a little younger, you may not necessarily know
- 12:16Speaker 1: who Jim Fagan was. He died passed away twenty seventeen,
- 12:21Speaker 1: but as many of us older folks know, he was
- 12:23Speaker 1: the classic voice for the NBA and for the NBC's
- 12:29Speaker 1: network during the nineteen nineties.
- 12:31Speaker 2: He did all the.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Promos back then, and it's it's really bizarre that the
- 12:37Speaker 1: lack of creativity in terms of what this era is
- 12:42Speaker 1: and what NBC is wanting to do eric here now
- 12:45Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five, it's like they want to go
- 12:48Speaker 1: back in time here and it's so bizarre to me.
- 12:51Speaker 1: We just wanted to give our thoughts on how networks
- 12:54Speaker 1: and others were using AI for this kind of marketing,
- 12:57Speaker 1: like if it's if it's good, if it's even good
- 13:01Speaker 1: for the brand, if it's good for basketball or whatever
- 13:03Speaker 1: sport it is. Because I look at something like this, Eric,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and I'm like, I think this is crap. To be honest,
- 13:11Speaker 1: I think that you have you have an era where
- 13:16Speaker 1: there are certain guys like look the eighties and the nineties.
- 13:19Speaker 1: You know you had John Madden, Pat summer Ale, those
- 13:23Speaker 1: were the voices of the NFL. Jim Fagan was certainly
- 13:26Speaker 1: that voice in the nineteen nineties and even beyond for
- 13:30Speaker 1: the NBA in terms of NBC. You have certain voices
- 13:34Speaker 1: for certain periods of time and certain eras. Why try
- 13:38Speaker 1: to recreate that. It's something I don't understand. I think
- 13:41Speaker 1: this is crap. I think it's garbage just because you
- 13:44Speaker 1: can use AI in this regard, I don't think it's
- 13:47Speaker 1: a good thing.
- 13:48Speaker 2: So I don't know what are your thoughts. I think
- 13:50Speaker 2: this sucks, to be honest.
- 13:52Speaker 3: There's a lot of really good announcers. Yeah, great voices
- 13:56Speaker 3: there out there now. Yes, you know what, if the
- 13:59Speaker 3: NBA wants to give me a million bucks, I have
- 14:02Speaker 3: a good voice. I mean you want me to your.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Voice gladly like silk it is?
- 14:08Speaker 3: And where but where does this shit end? I mean like, yeah,
- 14:12Speaker 3: is the NFL? You brought up Summer All and John Madden.
- 14:16Speaker 3: That's a great one. Like do you really want to
- 14:18Speaker 3: hear a game called by those two?
- 14:19Speaker 4: No?
- 14:19Speaker 1: I don't because I remember and loved the games of
- 14:22Speaker 1: the eighties and nineties that they called.
- 14:24Speaker 3: It's like his NFL film is going to do an
- 14:26Speaker 3: AI version of John Facenda, you know, and bring back
- 14:29Speaker 3: that voice. I don't get it, like it if you
- 14:35Speaker 3: always have one foot in the past, like the NFL
- 14:38Speaker 3: is a bad example because they always make money. But
- 14:40Speaker 3: like the NBA, it has always been like they always
- 14:43Speaker 3: kind of put a shine on the past, but are
- 14:46Speaker 3: always trying to move forward. Yeah, which is why this
- 14:49Speaker 3: story kind of kind of surprised me. It's a little
- 14:51Speaker 3: bat one yeah yeah, And I mean why not like
- 14:56Speaker 3: round Ball Rock, I understand it's a song. It stupid
- 15:00Speaker 3: as hell, but it's the catchiest goddamn thing I ever ever written.
- 15:04Speaker 3: There's so many great like comedy bits written about it.
- 15:08Speaker 3: I just why why don't why don't like major League
- 15:11Speaker 3: sports like use AI to the like to the advantage
- 15:15Speaker 3: of its fans. Yeah, meaning like if like during a game,
- 15:21Speaker 3: spit stats out of me, Like have some kind of
- 15:24Speaker 3: bot something that can watch a game a player and
- 15:28Speaker 3: be like, hey, three weeks ago this guy did this,
- 15:30Speaker 3: and like we see a trend here, have it? Have
- 15:34Speaker 3: it flash on my phone or have a flash on
- 15:36Speaker 3: the screen, Like there's so many cool things you can do,
- 15:39Speaker 3: and what what what's your like, what's what? What's your
- 15:42Speaker 3: your solution? You're going to go grave digging? Basically it's
- 15:46Speaker 3: morbid and creepy, just as a human like standpoint. I
- 15:51Speaker 3: was thinking of, like are we going to bring back
- 15:53Speaker 3: like Herb Morrison? Oh I had to look it up.
- 15:57Speaker 3: But he was a guy that did the Hindenburg. Oh
- 16:01Speaker 3: the humanity? Like how far back do we want to go?
- 16:04Speaker 3: This nonsense? I just think like, don't like the NBA
- 16:09Speaker 3: has always been forward thinking, don't just stop with this shit.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Who's clamoring for this stuff? No, that's the thing. It's like,
- 16:15Speaker 2: is it just lazy or are they justifying it?
- 16:18Speaker 1: Oh? It was so good for this time we gotta
- 16:21Speaker 1: keep it. We gotta keep it and or bring it back?
- 16:25Speaker 1: Is it just laziness? Because I don't know. There are times,
- 16:28Speaker 1: because you know, you look at Hollywood at times and
- 16:30Speaker 1: the recreation of certain movies or one offs of other movies,
- 16:34Speaker 1: and you think, my gosh, Hollywood's gotten to a point
- 16:36Speaker 1: where they're not really creative as much anymore, even though
- 16:39Speaker 1: some things are anyway, Maybe that's a bad example, but
- 16:42Speaker 1: like I feel like from a creativity standpoint, from from
- 16:45Speaker 1: a media standpoint, like things like sometimes there are so
- 16:50Speaker 1: many creative spaces and people doing things that you look
- 16:54Speaker 1: at these major conglomerates and you say, how and why
- 16:57Speaker 1: are you doing the things that you're doing right now now?
- 17:00Speaker 1: Because there's better stuff out there. And like you said,
- 17:05Speaker 1: there are so many better announcers that that we you know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you could use their voice on promo materials. We don't
- 17:11Speaker 1: need to bring Jim Fagan's voice back. It just doesn't
- 17:13Speaker 1: need to happen.
- 17:15Speaker 3: No, And look at what got you successful in the
- 17:17Speaker 3: first place. It's kind of the innovations within the viewing
- 17:20Speaker 3: viewing ship of a of a game like camera angles,
- 17:23Speaker 3: putting the camera over top of the court on a
- 17:25Speaker 3: on a on a line, right, using drones that kind
- 17:29Speaker 3: of stuff with cameras and like bringing back the voiceover
- 17:33Speaker 3: thing is just it's just not forward thinking, like where
- 17:36Speaker 3: it is kind of cool, like you say, you're a
- 17:38Speaker 3: Sixers game, and like they'll use Dave Zinco's voice going
- 17:41Speaker 3: on again the old he was the old you know,
- 17:43Speaker 3: spectrum announcer and I just got Julius the doctor, Like
- 17:47Speaker 3: they'll do that. That's cool, yes, But if it was
- 17:51Speaker 3: his voice AI generated and he's announcing fucking Quentin Grimes,
- 17:56Speaker 3: I'm like, no, I don't like this at all. This
- 17:58Speaker 3: is right. It's insult to the mister zincoff. It was
- 18:02Speaker 3: the best of all time, and it just it's again,
- 18:06Speaker 3: just take a look at what got you there, you know,
- 18:08Speaker 3: successful in their first place. This is not the way
- 18:10Speaker 3: to do it.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Moving on this NBA playoff and postseason, Holy cow, Eric,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I just will get into it really quick here before
- 18:20Speaker 1: the break. But as of us recording this, there is
- 18:24Speaker 1: no home team that has won a playoff game in
- 18:28Speaker 1: the second round so far. Nothing is normal here, nothing
- 18:31Speaker 1: is going on. I think that I think Okase may
- 18:34Speaker 1: actually beat Denver tonight at home.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Thirty.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yeah, they're at thirty, so like, that's probably gonna happen.
- 18:41Speaker 1: And for those of you listening to this Thursday or after,
- 18:43Speaker 1: so you know, okaysee may be the first team to
- 18:46Speaker 1: do that.
- 18:46Speaker 2: But man, it is bizarre. You do not see this
- 18:48Speaker 2: in the NBA at all. You never see especially in
- 18:52Speaker 2: the postseason.
- 18:53Speaker 1: And who the hell thought that the New York Knicks
- 18:56Speaker 1: We're gonna go into Boston and beat them the first
- 18:59Speaker 1: two games of the series. Give me a breath, Like,
- 19:02Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not complaining necessarily because it's fun basketball.
- 19:05Speaker 1: We've been watching some fun and interesting basketball when sometimes
- 19:09Speaker 1: the NBA postseason can be a little be a little shakier,
- 19:12Speaker 1: and they're especially the first couple of rounds. It's been
- 19:14Speaker 1: interesting so far.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Well, especially as a gambler. The first round is pretty
- 19:18Speaker 3: pretty textbook. Typically, I've won a lot of money in
- 19:21Speaker 3: the first round, right, second round secon rounds a little harder,
- 19:23Speaker 3: but not not too much. You almost always picked the
- 19:25Speaker 3: first You almost always picked the home team in the
- 19:28Speaker 3: first game because this team coming in typically has like
- 19:31Speaker 3: one day off and the other the home team had
- 19:33Speaker 3: like five days off. Yeah, this I think this goes
- 19:37Speaker 3: to show like how talented the league is top to bottom.
- 19:40Speaker 3: The Pacers, I mean, go into Cleveland. Cleveland was the
- 19:44Speaker 3: top team all year long, record wise. They didn't have
- 19:46Speaker 3: Darius Garland, but still and I like the Pacers, but
- 19:51Speaker 3: then you watch them in those two games and you're like,
- 19:52Speaker 3: you look, you look at the roster, and you're like,
- 19:55Speaker 3: it's a good fucking team. Yeah, just as good as Cleveland. Honestly,
- 19:58Speaker 3: like top to bottom. They have seven solid dudes and
- 20:01Speaker 3: it's all you need in the playoffs, have a great coach.
- 20:03Speaker 3: And I think the playoff rankings and the regular season
- 20:08Speaker 3: is just too long at this point for the NBA.
- 20:10Speaker 3: I'll even say that as a fan. But like, I
- 20:12Speaker 3: think the league is so talented one through like twenty four,
- 20:17Speaker 3: I would say even the bad teams that didn't get
- 20:20Speaker 3: in are pretty damn good, pretty talented. But this, this is, uh,
- 20:25Speaker 3: the Knicks have blown my mind. I just have to
- 20:28Speaker 3: say it. We we drafted Bridges, the guy who made
- 20:33Speaker 3: the two top defensive stops in the playoffs so far. Yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 3: I know, to beat the defending champions at home. He
- 20:40Speaker 3: made both stops against their two superstars, yes, Jalen Green
- 20:43Speaker 3: the other night and tonight Tatum. But we got ready
- 20:46Speaker 3: drafted him. Yeah, yeah, we trade him for desires that night.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Yes, that night, correct draft him and then you know what,
- 20:53Speaker 1: actually we don't want you, just go.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Zire Smith has been out of the league for like
- 20:59Speaker 3: three year.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Jesus so fingers crossed for Monday, guys, fingers cross, which
- 21:08Speaker 3: I'm kind of going into our next absolutely.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Absolutely, it's a good segue for sure, because when we
- 21:13Speaker 1: get back from break, we're going to talk about draft lotteries,
- 21:17Speaker 1: whether it's the NHL Draft lottery or the NBA Draft lottery,
- 21:22Speaker 1: and do we like draft lotteries. We also got some
- 21:25Speaker 1: Eagles talk coming as well as some NFC East talk
- 21:29Speaker 1: with our guests this week. So if you are new
- 21:31Speaker 1: to listening to the PST podcast show, follow us on
- 21:35Speaker 1: various social media sites out there. So just search out
- 21:37Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Sports Table and you can follow us on Instagram,
- 21:42Speaker 1: on Twitter, slash x, I'm over on TikTok at mister
- 21:45Speaker 1: Jeff Warren, got our Facebook page.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Search us out there.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Eric and I are on threads at slend ten twenty
- 21:51Speaker 1: three for Eric at mister Jeff Warren for me, and
- 21:54Speaker 1: we're both on Blue Sky. Just search out Jeff Warren
- 21:58Speaker 1: and for Eric at brick poly over on Blue Sky,
- 22:02Speaker 1: and uh same for if you're you got the you
- 22:05Speaker 1: got the visual here on YouTube and if you're listening
- 22:08Speaker 1: on audio, just search us out online. And with that
- 22:12Speaker 1: being said, we are gonna take a break and we're
- 22:14Speaker 1: gonna be back in.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Just a bit.
- 22:18Speaker 1: All right, we are back, and we are gonna be
- 22:20Speaker 1: diving into draft lotteries. Look, the Philadelphia Flyers ended this
- 22:26Speaker 1: season in a way where no, they weren't tanking. This
- 22:29Speaker 1: was a team that was actually trying. However, they were
- 22:33Speaker 1: slated to be the number four overall pick heading into
- 22:37Speaker 1: the NHL Draft lottery, and after it was all said
- 22:40Speaker 1: and done, they fell to number six after the lottery drawings.
- 22:45Speaker 1: We're gonna be talking a little bit more about the
- 22:46Speaker 1: Philadelphia Flyers, uh in terms of their draft and what's
- 22:50Speaker 1: gonna be coming to them next week, uh during U
- 22:55Speaker 1: with with the content on this podcast platform. So yes,
- 22:58Speaker 1: they fell to number six after the lottery drawings. NBA,
- 23:02Speaker 1: as we know, also uses the draft lottery, and who
- 23:05Speaker 1: the hell knows what's gonna happen to the Philadelphia seventy
- 23:07Speaker 1: six ers as they are going to We're gonna find
- 23:09Speaker 1: out a lot more this coming Monday as it pertains
- 23:12Speaker 1: to the Sixers. So I don't know about you, Eric,
- 23:15Speaker 1: Like there are of course pros and cons to draft lotteries,
- 23:18Speaker 1: but I'm getting to the point where and I know
- 23:21Speaker 1: it's it's like, I'm getting to the point where I'm
- 23:24Speaker 1: just like, you know what, our draft lottery is even fair?
- 23:27Speaker 1: Because I look at the Flyers situation.
- 23:29Speaker 2: They were, they were not their number.
- 23:31Speaker 1: Four draft pick overall heading into this, and then they
- 23:37Speaker 1: became the number sixth and they had the uh the
- 23:43Speaker 1: the new Utah team actually basically took the number four
- 23:46Speaker 1: spot and they had a better record than the Flyers,
- 23:49Speaker 1: And it really kind of like it just kind of
- 23:51Speaker 1: ticks me off in a way, like I wish it
- 23:53Speaker 1: was kind of like the NFL where there wasn't necessarily
- 23:56Speaker 1: the draft lottery. But I do understand that the draft
- 23:59Speaker 1: lottery does help weaker teams rebuild by giving them a
- 24:03Speaker 1: higher chance to secure top talent, and it discourages teams
- 24:07Speaker 1: from deliberately losing games and tanking. In the NBA, I'm
- 24:12Speaker 1: not too sure how much that works, but in the NHL,
- 24:15Speaker 1: I can absolutely see it. But I tend to think
- 24:19Speaker 1: that draft lotteries anymore are kind of kind of garbage
- 24:22Speaker 1: in my opinion. I don't know if you have a
- 24:24Speaker 1: different opinion. I think it's not as fair and just yeah,
- 24:28Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on it? That's where I stand.
- 24:33Speaker 3: I mean some mixed thoughts. I mean, let's face it,
- 24:37Speaker 3: if the Flyers jumped in number two, would you be
- 24:39Speaker 3: so mad?
- 24:40Speaker 1: You're absolutely correct, absolutely right.
- 24:45Speaker 3: I mean every time the Sixers got a number one pick,
- 24:47Speaker 3: I was like, I like the lottery, it is great.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Now.
- 24:53Speaker 3: It does like football is different because you can't you
- 24:55Speaker 3: can't really tank in football. There's sixteen games. Yeah, you
- 25:00Speaker 3: can do certain things, but there's so many players involved,
- 25:02Speaker 3: and there's like players fighting for contracts because there's no
- 25:05Speaker 3: guarantee contracts the NFL, whereas the NBA. You know, you
- 25:10Speaker 3: just sit all your look at the Sixers the last
- 25:13Speaker 3: what fifty games of their season. Maybe they were like,
- 25:17Speaker 3: we are going to lose, and that's just the way
- 25:19Speaker 3: it is. Teams wanted to do that year. Ending you're
- 25:22Speaker 3: out and go ten and seventy two every year and
- 25:23Speaker 3: you just game the first pick, Like what's their incentive? Like, okay,
- 25:28Speaker 3: we took the first pick didn't work out, We're going
- 25:30Speaker 3: to do it again. Yeah, and just again and again.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Sometimes those teams have to be punished, you know, and
- 25:36Speaker 3: wind up with like the fifth or sixth pick. It's
- 25:39Speaker 3: not a perfect system, but they tried it without it
- 25:42Speaker 3: in the past, and the NBA got really fucked up,
- 25:45Speaker 3: you know when that happened. Hockey, I have no idea.
- 25:50Speaker 3: I I hockey usually follows the path of the NBA
- 25:55Speaker 3: typically because I think Gary Bettman for the longest time,
- 26:00Speaker 3: wasn't he like a he was a David Stern guy? Right, Yeah,
- 26:04Speaker 3: So there's a lot of the NBA DNA in the
- 26:07Speaker 3: NHLs like front offices, probably still to this day. But
- 26:11Speaker 3: I can see it both ways. I I don't. It
- 26:14Speaker 3: does create some excitement, that's for sure. Like I mean
- 26:18Speaker 3: May twelfth Monday is like I can't wait as Sixers fit.
- 26:22Speaker 3: But at the same time, if what happened to the
- 26:25Speaker 3: Flyers happens to the Sixers Monday night, okay, see it
- 26:29Speaker 3: gets our pick. We dropped two spots on the aft. Yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 3: we fucked I'll just say it. All season was a
- 26:35Speaker 3: disaster and it will be an unmitigated dumpster fire if
- 26:39Speaker 3: that if they lose that pick. Yeah, especially if OKC
- 26:43Speaker 3: wins the title. What a mess. But there's no there's
- 26:46Speaker 3: no good answer, you know what I mean. But what
- 26:48Speaker 3: I will say is I I didn't watch the NHL
- 26:51Speaker 3: one and I missed the days where they did it
- 26:54Speaker 3: live on the air. They pulled the ping ping pong ball.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Oh they did with the fly Yeah they or they
- 27:00Speaker 1: did with the NHL. Yeah, that is awesome. That's the
- 27:03Speaker 1: way you should do it.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Yeah, like you if you want to, like keep me
- 27:07Speaker 3: on the lottery side, make it a show, like make
- 27:10Speaker 3: it like freaking Jeopardy whatever, ye dumb game shit you
- 27:13Speaker 3: think of. Like I don't like when they come out,
- 27:15Speaker 3: like here's the card, Like it's like I want to
- 27:18Speaker 3: see the ping pong ball. Like, let's make it fun.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Like you're gonna have conspiracy theories regardless. I know. That's
- 27:24Speaker 3: the nineteen eighty five NBA draft with Patrick Ewing. Everybody thoughtybody, yes, yeah,
- 27:29Speaker 3: that they froze the card or whatever. It was so ridiculous.
- 27:32Speaker 3: And same with when Penny Hardaway got drafted by the
- 27:34Speaker 3: Magic They think that David Stern fixes so you get
- 27:37Speaker 3: Penny to scheck. But like, but so what I'm still
- 27:39Speaker 3: talking about it, like, just do it, just do it
- 27:42Speaker 3: live on TV.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I felt like seriously watching the NHL Draft lottery, I
- 27:46Speaker 1: felt like I was watching the Pennsylvania Lottery with the
- 27:50Speaker 1: with the balls that they were just like gone up.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Listen, if you watch the Pennsylvania Lottery from June ninety
- 27:57Speaker 3: eight to June of nineteen nine nine, that was me
- 28:01Speaker 3: on the camera.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Oh there you go, folks.
- 28:04Speaker 3: There my Davy station actually did the Pennsylvania State Lottery.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Y ooh, fun facts. But with Eric here, I.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Would do the wide shot and then my partner would
- 28:13Speaker 3: do this medium shot, and then as the balls came up,
- 28:15Speaker 3: that was me zooming in and tilty.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Oh nice, all I need to go back and watch
- 28:20Speaker 2: some of this stuff.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Oh they're thrilling.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, right, well let's move on here into some
- 28:26Speaker 1: Eagles talk and then again what we're thrown down on
- 28:29Speaker 1: the table this week, we're gonna talk to our friend
- 28:31Speaker 1: Dave Holman from Bloggingtheboys dot com about the NFC East
- 28:34Speaker 1: in general. But with the Philadelphia Eagles. News came out
- 28:38Speaker 1: today and honestly it was welcoming news for me. I
- 28:41Speaker 1: was very happy to hear that the Eagles found a
- 28:44Speaker 1: way to resolve the Dallas Goddard contract impassed with a restructure,
- 28:50Speaker 1: coming back for another year ten million dollars and with
- 28:55Speaker 1: one million dollars of incentives. He was initially due fourteen
- 28:59Speaker 1: million from the Eagles this coming season. So it's great that,
- 29:03Speaker 1: you know, get it's an extra year here for him.
- 29:07Speaker 1: And look, Dallas Goddard has been injured a number of times,
- 29:10Speaker 1: as US Eagles fans know, but he's over these years.
- 29:14Speaker 1: But he has been a fantastic tight end, especially when
- 29:17Speaker 1: it comes to the postseason, where he's among the best
- 29:20Speaker 1: in the league. Twelve career playoff games, fifty two catches,
- 29:24Speaker 1: eighth most by a tight end, for five hundred and
- 29:27Speaker 1: sixty two yards and four touchdowns. It's nothing to sneeze about, folks.
- 29:32Speaker 1: And we know how critical Dallas Goddard was in the
- 29:34Speaker 1: postseason on this recent run to the Super Bowl. Now
- 29:38Speaker 1: we're going to say that's gonna happen this next year, No,
- 29:41Speaker 1: you never know. Again, he's getting older and more often injured.
- 29:46Speaker 1: He has only since twenty twenty, he has only averaged
- 29:50Speaker 1: twelve and a half games per season, So yes, he
- 29:53Speaker 1: is missing some time. Howie Roseman here I think going
- 29:57Speaker 1: against some pretty strong trends from not only himself but
- 30:01Speaker 1: his front office, you know, believing at the end of
- 30:04Speaker 1: the day that Dallas Goddard was worth it, and and
- 30:07Speaker 1: Goddard wanted to be here as well, because there were
- 30:09Speaker 1: rumors that during the course of the NFL Draft teams
- 30:13Speaker 1: wanted Goddard, but there were negotiations between the front office, Goddard,
- 30:17Speaker 1: and other teams, and Goddard ended up wanting to stay
- 30:20Speaker 1: with the Birds. So I'm glad this actually happened because
- 30:23Speaker 1: without a very good tight end in Dallas Goddard, it
- 30:28Speaker 1: would have changed this offense a lot. And I still
- 30:31Speaker 1: think the window is open for this Eagles team that
- 30:33Speaker 1: they could potentially repeat this coming year if things work
- 30:37Speaker 1: out well and if folks stay healthy. So I'm liking
- 30:40Speaker 1: this contract extension.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's harmless financially for the Eagles. Yeah, you bring
- 30:46Speaker 3: back a popular player. Fans love him. I've never heard
- 30:50Speaker 3: of Dallas Goddard sucks comment in my life, right, Like.
- 30:53Speaker 1: It's annoying when he's injured and stuff like that. Yeah, great,
- 30:56Speaker 1: Calcatara could catch the ball. Not a great blocker at all,
- 31:00Speaker 1: in fact, thinks, but still nobody like you said, nobody
- 31:03Speaker 1: really complained.
- 31:04Speaker 2: And griped about Dallas Goddard.
- 31:06Speaker 3: No, he's a mountain of a man. He can block,
- 31:08Speaker 3: he can catch when he's healthy. Again, popular player, so
- 31:14Speaker 3: help me out here. And NFL contracts are so funky.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Did did he have the option of like opting out
- 31:20Speaker 3: and going to free agency or was it just kind
- 31:22Speaker 3: of trade discussions? Was he under contract he couldn't talk
- 31:26Speaker 3: to anyone else.
- 31:26Speaker 1: He was under contract, really couldn't talk to anybody. So
- 31:29Speaker 1: at this point he's still I mean, at the end
- 31:33Speaker 1: of the day, free agency was probably going to be
- 31:36Speaker 1: the way that he was going to go after this season.
- 31:38Speaker 1: But you know, he had he had a decent amount
- 31:41Speaker 1: of leverage he did, especially after this postseason.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's a nice chunk of guaranteed change ten mil. Yeah,
- 31:51Speaker 3: a lot of players don't. I mean, there's probably really
- 31:55Speaker 3: good wide receivers. I don't have ten million guaranteed this year,
- 31:57Speaker 3: you know what I mean. So that's a really nice
- 32:00Speaker 3: that nice chunk could change for him. Now, it's a
- 32:04Speaker 3: it's one of those it's a great how he this
- 32:07Speaker 3: ain't gonna hurt us. All it is is like there's
- 32:09Speaker 3: no there's no loss here. Yeah, in bringing him back.
- 32:13Speaker 3: You know some fans might be like, one, I'd sign
- 32:14Speaker 3: him to a two or three year deal, but we
- 32:16Speaker 3: all know like all the all the front end money
- 32:18Speaker 3: would be guaranteed the first year anyway and be like
- 32:20Speaker 3: a one year contract. So yeah, no, there's no no downside. Again,
- 32:26Speaker 3: I think how he's like makingame sure you no downside.
- 32:28Speaker 3: His draft picks are smart, his trades are smart. Like
- 32:30Speaker 3: everything's like, you can't criticize me, Like what are we
- 32:34Speaker 3: gonna say I sctually gave him twelve like I should
- 32:36Speaker 3: give less money, Like it doesn't mean any Like he
- 32:39Speaker 3: makes really smart moves. He does.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Always got a long leash at this point, and rightfully so,
- 32:44Speaker 1: rightfully so, and you know it leads us to what
- 32:48Speaker 1: we wanted to dive into before we got to this
- 32:50Speaker 1: week's interview.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Everyone is these.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Eagles drafts, say over the past five drafts, where how
- 32:56Speaker 1: he really has got his footing and really under stood
- 33:00Speaker 1: the draft process and the scouting department too. I mean,
- 33:03Speaker 1: you can't it's not just how it's this Eagle scouting department,
- 33:06Speaker 1: whether it's the pro scouting side and trying to bring
- 33:09Speaker 1: free agents here, or whether it is the college scouting side.
- 33:14Speaker 1: You know, you look at the drafts from twenty twenty
- 33:16Speaker 1: one to twenty twenty five, Eric and I are going
- 33:19Speaker 1: to rank these drafts based on what we think are
- 33:24Speaker 1: the best. I mean, it's been a collective working group
- 33:29Speaker 1: of folks in the front office and inevitably Howie Roseman
- 33:32Speaker 1: really making these decisions here. But if we rank these
- 33:37Speaker 1: these top five the past five years, if we rank
- 33:40Speaker 1: these Eric, of course, like this year, we have no
- 33:44Speaker 1: idea what's going to happen. Even though I absolutely love
- 33:47Speaker 1: how the twenty twenty five Eagles draft went with four
- 33:51Speaker 1: defensive players right off the back at you know, linebacker
- 33:56Speaker 1: slash edge rusher with Jihad Campbell, and then you got
- 33:59Speaker 1: safe defensive tackle, cornerback. I'm sorry, the first five picks
- 34:03Speaker 1: and then linebacker as well, first five picks being defensive players.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I absolutely love that. But I am going to put
- 34:09Speaker 1: the twenty twenty five draft as my number five here.
- 34:13Speaker 1: So do you want to do you want to start
- 34:15Speaker 1: off doing it like that? Here?
- 34:18Speaker 3: It's the same it's twenty twenty five because there's just
- 34:21Speaker 3: there's no ranking it. Yeah, I have no clue what's
- 34:23Speaker 3: going to happen. Right, but just from from from prior
- 34:26Speaker 3: drafts we're about to talk about, you could only be positive. Yes,
- 34:31Speaker 3: it's just a shit ton of upside and all these picks.
- 34:33Speaker 1: So there are so all right, well, why don't we
- 34:36Speaker 1: go with the number four here? What if you have
- 34:39Speaker 1: to rank them your number four year from two thousand
- 34:43Speaker 1: and one to twenty and twenty four, you know, which
- 34:46Speaker 1: would be your number four year?
- 34:49Speaker 3: Number four? I mean these are the draft these are yeah,
- 34:52Speaker 3: I mean it's not good. The drafts have been like
- 34:54Speaker 3: I'm gonna say, twenty twenty one is number four my list, Yes,
- 34:58Speaker 3: it is for me too. Yeah, it's Ante smith Landon Dickerson,
- 35:01Speaker 3: Milton Williams, and then it kind of you know, he
- 35:03Speaker 3: Kennet gained well, but like the rest of it's kind of.
- 35:06Speaker 2: But Milton Williams was in that draft. He was their third.
- 35:08Speaker 1: He was a third pick, you know, and he was
- 35:10Speaker 1: the highest paid free agent this year. So it's like,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I mean, again, you still had a guy like Marlon
- 35:17Speaker 1: Tuypolutu who was a contributor on the defensive line too.
- 35:21Speaker 1: It was not a bad draft, But I'm there at number.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Four with you too. I mean, three starters from the uh,
- 35:27Speaker 3: from the super Bowl team in that, in that, in
- 35:29Speaker 3: that draft. But still there's better ones.
- 35:31Speaker 1: There are there are, So let's move on to number three.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Who's your Who's the third best draft class?
- 35:38Speaker 3: Do you think?
- 35:39Speaker 1: So we're at two thousand and two. All right, I'm sorry,
- 35:42Speaker 1: twenty twenty two, twenty twenty three, or twenty twenty four?
- 35:44Speaker 1: Which one is the number three for you?
- 35:47Speaker 3: This is gonna be seem blasphemous, But because I love
- 35:50Speaker 3: this guy so much, twenty twenty three is my number three. Okay,
- 35:53Speaker 3: I mean Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Tyler Steen, not like
- 35:58Speaker 3: I mean Jalen Carter just owned the NFL from the
- 36:01Speaker 3: defensive tackle position this this this past season. He's the
- 36:05Speaker 3: best defensive tackle. But again, I'm looking at the other
- 36:09Speaker 3: two and I'm like, holy crap, like so many I'm
- 36:12Speaker 3: good contributors, really really good draft. It's incredible, Like there's
- 36:16Speaker 3: gonna be a trend here in the rest of these.
- 36:18Speaker 3: But like his how he's first three picks of like
- 36:21Speaker 3: the last five drafts. Yeah, just destroyed. Yeah, if you
- 36:26Speaker 3: get three starters in your first three picks, that is
- 36:28Speaker 3: a massive that's a massive win because they're all cheap too. Absolutely. Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 1: See, see, my number three is actually gonna be the
- 36:36Speaker 1: twenty twenty four draft, as much as it pains me,
- 36:40Speaker 1: because you had Quinna and Mitchell and Cooper Degen who
- 36:43Speaker 1: were your first two picks of the draft, such key
- 36:47Speaker 1: players this year on the way to the Super Bowl,
- 36:49Speaker 1: and of course Cooper Degene making that incredible pick six
- 36:53Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl, just taking it from Patrick Mahomes.
- 36:56Speaker 1: My god, I love that. Just that what a great interception.
- 36:59Speaker 1: But also from that draft two, look, you did have
- 37:04Speaker 1: a bit of a drop of you wanted to see
- 37:05Speaker 1: wide receivers like Anayah Smith and Johnny Wilson really stepping up.
- 37:10Speaker 1: They really didn't in their second year. Dylan McMahon, who
- 37:14Speaker 1: was the very last pick in the sixth round, you know,
- 37:16Speaker 1: I don't even think he is on the team. Will
- 37:19Speaker 1: Shipley certainly, you know, had some snaps here and there.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Jalx Hunt is certainly a project as well. Jeremiah Trotter junior,
- 37:27Speaker 1: who knows if he's going to be a contributor in
- 37:29Speaker 1: the future. But my number three is the twenty twenty
- 37:32Speaker 1: four draft, even given the sheer dominance by the two
- 37:36Speaker 1: cornerbacks who they took in round one and round two.
- 37:39Speaker 2: That's where I'm at.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Okay, And I made twenty twenty four my second pick. Okay,
- 37:45Speaker 3: it's probably a nosehair, you know what I mean.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Like, and I made twenty twenty three, yeah, third too, okay.
- 37:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:52Speaker 3: And the only reason I bumped up twenty twenty four
- 37:54Speaker 3: or twenty three, it's just because, like, if there's been
- 37:57Speaker 3: one position the Eagles had flaws throughout the past couple
- 38:01Speaker 3: of years, it is the defensive backfield. Yeah, good players,
- 38:04Speaker 3: but they always you know, they got burnt quite a bit.
- 38:07Speaker 3: There were some really bad games near the end of seasons,
- 38:10Speaker 3: like where the Cowboys killed them? What was it last
- 38:13Speaker 3: two years ago? When then going into the playoffs and yep,
- 38:16Speaker 3: that was always a tricky tricky point. And if you
- 38:19Speaker 3: go through his you go through I mean, I'm looking
- 38:21Speaker 3: at twenty one through twenty three right now. How he's
- 38:24Speaker 3: drafts and he's got I mean, there are no defensive
- 38:28Speaker 3: no defensive backfield players taken within like the first three
- 38:31Speaker 3: rounds zero like Sydney Brown, Zach mc or Zach McPherson.
- 38:36Speaker 3: Like it's it's it's not pretty right, but he decided
- 38:41Speaker 3: to nail that position down in twenty twenty four, but
- 38:44Speaker 3: not just nail it down, but made the right picks.
- 38:46Speaker 3: I mean, Quinny and Mitchell is a ten year, hopefully
- 38:50Speaker 3: Eagle starter shut down corner for the next however many seasons.
- 38:54Speaker 3: Cooper Degen awesome playing the Super Bowl. I hope you
- 38:57Speaker 3: can stay healthy and be that like great safety that
- 39:01Speaker 3: the Eagles have needed for a long time. Yeah. The
- 39:03Speaker 3: only reason like why I put it just just a
- 39:06Speaker 3: hair above twenty twenty.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Okay, that's interesting because with twenty twenty three for me,
- 39:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty three comes in at number two for me
- 39:12Speaker 1: one because of Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, key contributors, you know.
- 39:18Speaker 1: With regard to the Super Bowl run. This year, Tyler
- 39:20Speaker 1: Steen has been a very very serviceable backup offensive lineman.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Possibly is going to be the starter at right guard
- 39:29Speaker 1: this year.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Of course.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Kieley Ringo, Yeah, guess what. The guy really didn't get
- 39:33Speaker 1: on the field other than special teams. But he was
- 39:36Speaker 1: a special teams ace and was a major contributor in
- 39:41Speaker 1: terms of opposing teams getting deep into their territory. And
- 39:46Speaker 1: you don't have that this season if it's not for
- 39:48Speaker 1: Keeley Ringo, Tanner McKee. We saw him as a very
- 39:52Speaker 1: very good backup quarterback. People wanting him over. What's his nuts?
- 39:59Speaker 3: Can you pick it?
- 39:59Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yes, and Moro Jamo he is, he's going to be
- 40:03Speaker 1: a big time contributor this year for this Eagles team too.
- 40:08Speaker 1: So like that's why it's number two for me. Completely
- 40:10Speaker 1: get where you're coming from. I really do, especially with
- 40:13Speaker 1: the two cornerbacks right off the bat with the twenty
- 40:16Speaker 1: twenty four draft. But number two is yeah, twenty twenty
- 40:19Speaker 1: three for me.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Two very easy, like easily flip a bowle drafts.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Absolutely well, we both have number one as the save
- 40:27Speaker 1: the twenty twenty two Eagles draft where you have only
- 40:31Speaker 1: five players folks. But my god, Jordan Davis, Cam, Jurgens,
- 40:37Speaker 1: Nakobe Dean who finally came into his own this year,
- 40:39Speaker 1: Karen Johnson.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Who is his lays always. Yes, he's on the Titans.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Yes, he did play some with the Eagles though, And
- 40:47Speaker 1: you know there was you know whether or not he
- 40:49Speaker 1: was going to actually be a contributing member of the
- 40:52Speaker 1: Eagles defense. But then and in Grant count Kata coming
- 40:55Speaker 1: in in a very serviceable backup to Dallas Goddard. But yeah,
- 41:00Speaker 1: Jordan Davis, Cam Jurgens Na Kobe Dean. Absolutely, this is
- 41:04Speaker 1: number one for me.
- 41:06Speaker 3: It's not even close. I mean, like how he had
- 41:08Speaker 3: five picks that year. Yeah, pick picks. Three starters in
- 41:12Speaker 3: the first three picks, and not just not just serviable starter,
- 41:15Speaker 3: like serviceable starters, like like play making starters. You know,
- 41:20Speaker 3: Jordan Davis is not Jalen Carter, but I don't think
- 41:22Speaker 3: Jalen Carter's job is as easy if Jordan Davis is
- 41:24Speaker 3: not next to him. Camp Jurggens, you know, took the mantle.
- 41:28Speaker 3: He's the center from I mean, what a tough position
- 41:32Speaker 3: to step into this past season. The Kobe Dean's going
- 41:35Speaker 3: to be a stud. Grand Calcatara could be like the
- 41:38Speaker 3: next tight end for the Eagles, who knows, Probably not,
- 41:40Speaker 3: but like beyond a serviceable backup. You knocked out of
- 41:46Speaker 3: the park four out of five. I mean, how many
- 41:48Speaker 3: how many ship teams are like the Raiders every year?
- 41:54Speaker 3: Suck Suck the Panthers, I mean, the Patriots were We're
- 42:00Speaker 3: in the toilet for a couple of years because Bill Belichick,
- 42:03Speaker 3: who's I would.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Love to have a show about that right now, And
- 42:07Speaker 1: you know what, we got to do that the next
- 42:09Speaker 1: time we really got to talk about.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Bill Belichick and what's happening in his life.
- 42:14Speaker 3: My god, he was just just give me a minute,
- 42:19Speaker 3: like a stoic, stubborn son of a bitch, Like he
- 42:23Speaker 3: got away with murder with the media because he won
- 42:25Speaker 3: so many Super Bowls and he's a genius, and now
- 42:28Speaker 3: he looks like a doddering old fool who married a
- 42:31Speaker 3: call girl. Supposedly, it's increasing.
- 42:37Speaker 2: He's a head coach off.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Yes, she cut off the I can't, but it's it's
- 42:42Speaker 3: I love it because screw the Patriots, screwed Bill Belichick.
- 42:45Speaker 3: But it is awful to see a doddering old man
- 42:48Speaker 3: getting taken advantage.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Yes, and the fact that they were supposed to do
- 42:52Speaker 1: a hard knocks down there at the at the University
- 42:54Speaker 1: of North Carolina happening now, no, not, She's the star exactly,
- 43:00Speaker 1: that's gonna happen. It's incredible. What's happened to this gentleman's anyway?
- 43:03Speaker 3: People? Twenty twenty two drafts my favorite one.
- 43:05Speaker 1: Yeah, same here, folks, same here. All right, very good, buddy,
- 43:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna let you head out here. Great show, great
- 43:12Speaker 1: discussions here. We're gonna be talking about the NFC East

- 43:19Speaker 3: I don't know if I like you closing out the
- 43:20Speaker 3: show talking to a Cowboys fan.
- 43:22Speaker 2: But I know, I know the guys at blogging the
- 43:25Speaker 2: Boys are not bad. They're not bad guys. Well only
- 43:29Speaker 2: on Sundays.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Oh my god, I know.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Well that's that's about it here. I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 43:35Speaker 1: go to break and then I'm gonna jump off a bridge,
- 43:39Speaker 1: break your leg. Yes, exactly, all right, buddy, see you later.
- 43:45Speaker 1: And when we come back, folks, we're going to get
- 43:48Speaker 1: into some NFC East talks.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Stick with us.
- 43:52Speaker 1: And now on the table and joining us from blogging
- 43:58Speaker 1: the Boys this week. It is a great s B
- 44:01Speaker 1: Nation site. Yes, Eagles fans, I know it's about the
- 44:04Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys and he covers the Dallas Cowboys. However, great
- 44:08Speaker 1: great content. Always love the guys over Bloggingtheboys dot Com.
- 44:11Speaker 1: We've got Dave Holman, Dave, Buddy, how you doing man?
- 44:14Speaker 4: Hey, thanks for having me. I'm doing good. It's you know,
- 44:19Speaker 4: we were chatting a little bit before him, like it's
- 44:21Speaker 4: the last few months have been a hard time for
- 44:24Speaker 4: Cowboys fans in general.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Yes, especially you.
- 44:27Speaker 4: Know going into the into enemy territory with an Eagles
- 44:30Speaker 4: podcast after right, So, but always happy to be on
- 44:34Speaker 4: the show, Always happy to you know, chop it up
- 44:37Speaker 4: with you. So thanks for bringing me back.
- 44:39Speaker 1: I appreciate you, my friend, I really do. Look, I
- 44:41Speaker 1: wanted to bring you on to talk about what this
- 44:44Speaker 1: NFC East Division really looks like now, especially after the draft,
- 44:48Speaker 1: after what we've seen in free agency. Quite frankly coincidentally enough,
- 44:52Speaker 1: you know, we had planned to have you on for
- 44:54Speaker 1: a little while now, and then the news broke today
- 44:57Speaker 1: that the Dallas Cowboys are acquired George Pickens from the
- 45:01Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Steelers in a trade. I didn't pull back the curtain, folks.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I always provide our guests some of the topics that
- 45:08Speaker 1: we're going to be getting into. Obviously I didn't provide
- 45:10Speaker 1: this one since it basically just happened, you know, just.
- 45:13Speaker 2: A few hours ago.
- 45:14Speaker 1: But Dave, what are your thoughts on George Pickens coming
- 45:17Speaker 1: to the Dallas Cowboys if you had time to digest it?
- 45:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's it's funny because it feels like,
- 45:25Speaker 4: you know, there's been rumors, you know, every month of
- 45:27Speaker 4: this offseason about, oh, the Cowboys are trading for George Pickens.
- 45:30Speaker 4: He's been floated so often as like the most logical choice, right,
- 45:34Speaker 4: especially after the Steelers traded for DK Metcalf, who fills
- 45:37Speaker 4: a very similar role. And so in a lot of ways,
- 45:42Speaker 4: like I've been prepared for this, right, I think that's
- 45:45Speaker 4: actually gonna happen.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 45:48Speaker 4: But I mean, and we'll talk a little bit about
- 45:50Speaker 4: this in the context of the draft as well, But
- 45:51Speaker 4: going into the draft, the Cowboys, a lot a lot
- 45:54Speaker 4: of people thought they were going to take a receiver
- 45:55Speaker 4: in the first round. A lot of people had their
- 45:57Speaker 4: eyes on Keetero and McMillan of Arizona, who he went
- 46:01Speaker 4: a few picks earlier, and then they pivoted to Alabama
- 46:04Speaker 4: guard Tyler Booker. So coming out of the draft they
- 46:07Speaker 4: didn't take a single receiver. At any point throughout the draft,
- 46:10Speaker 4: it kind of felt like a lot of people really
- 46:12Speaker 4: liked the players that they got, but they were also saying,
- 46:15Speaker 4: you know, well, who else is catching the ball? After
- 46:18Speaker 4: Seed lamb ceed gets double team, which he will, who's
- 46:21Speaker 4: going to catch the ball?
- 46:22Speaker 3: Right?
- 46:23Speaker 4: And this move really clears up a lot of that.
- 46:25Speaker 4: George Pickens, I think his play style is a really
- 46:28Speaker 4: good compliment for Ceedee Lamb. Obviously, he's on the last
- 46:32Speaker 4: year of his rookie deal, so there's questions about how
- 46:34Speaker 4: long he's going to be round with the team, questions
- 46:36Speaker 4: about his maturity, questions about his play effort, and things
- 46:39Speaker 4: like that. There are a lot of things that it
- 46:42Speaker 4: could be boom, could be bust. But it's the kind
- 46:45Speaker 4: of player where I'm like, you know, I, that's the guy,
- 46:48Speaker 4: kind of guy that you take a chance on and
- 46:50Speaker 4: see if you can make it work. And I'm excited,
- 46:53Speaker 4: but also recognize it's not you know, this move is
- 46:56Speaker 4: not what's propelling the Cowboys to the super Bowl, right.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Absolutely, the season is about taking chances with every NFL
- 47:02Speaker 1: team at the end of the day, whether it's free agency,
- 47:05Speaker 1: you look at some of the talent that is brought
- 47:08Speaker 1: on by other teams, Dave, and not not just the Cowboys,
- 47:11Speaker 1: just in general, whether it's the Eagles, the Commanders, the Giants,
- 47:14Speaker 1: you know, the teams that we're gonna be talking about
- 47:16Speaker 1: on this particular episode and discussion.
- 47:19Speaker 2: But that's what it is.
- 47:20Speaker 3: It is.
- 47:21Speaker 1: It is a free for all of We have to
- 47:23Speaker 1: take a chance on somebody to fill holes and to
- 47:27Speaker 1: give us the best opportunity from a data driven standpoint
- 47:31Speaker 1: of what this person and talent can do for our teams.
- 47:35Speaker 1: So again, folks, so we're talking to Dave here from
- 47:37Speaker 1: Bloggingtheboys dot com. You are on the Twitter slash acts correct.
- 47:41Speaker 4: I am, yes, I'm I'm on Twitter at underscore DH
- 47:45Speaker 4: four four underscore. I'm also on Blue Sky at DH
- 47:50Speaker 4: four four, so same thing, but without the underscores because
- 47:52Speaker 4: I was able to get in early enough.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Nice. Yeah, absolutely, it's key to get interview with some
- 47:57Speaker 2: of these sites.
- 47:58Speaker 4: I kind of alternate between the two but active on both.
- 48:01Speaker 4: So wherever you are follow me, you'll get my thoughts
- 48:03Speaker 4: and great all my opinions on George Pickens and everything
- 48:07Speaker 4: else that comes into my mind at various points.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Sounds good.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Let's get into this NFC East division here, because you know,
- 48:13Speaker 1: when we look at the division overall, Dave, it's always
- 48:17Speaker 1: a great division, just filled with a lot of rivalries,
- 48:19Speaker 1: storied histories. I mean, this past year, two NFC teams
- 48:23Speaker 1: actually made the NFC Championship Game, one became the Super
- 48:26Speaker 1: Bowl champion. But this has always been a very fluid
- 48:30Speaker 1: type of division with different winners every year. As we know,
- 48:33Speaker 1: I mean it's over twenty years since we've seen a
- 48:36Speaker 1: repeat division champion. So when you look at the NFL
- 48:41Speaker 1: landscape in general, how would you assess the NFC East
- 48:45Speaker 1: Division overall?
- 48:48Speaker 4: I you know, the NFC East is like it's such
- 48:50Speaker 4: a mystery to me every single year for that same
- 48:52Speaker 4: reason of they haven't had a repeat champ in a
- 48:55Speaker 4: long time, right, which is crazy when you think about it,
- 48:58Speaker 4: because you know, ring that same spin, you've got the
- 49:01Speaker 4: Giants and the Tom Coughlin era. The only team that well,
- 49:05Speaker 4: not the only team now, but for a while they
- 49:07Speaker 4: were the only team that could beat Tom Brady in
- 49:08Speaker 4: the Super Bowl. Eagles went on to do it, But
- 49:12Speaker 4: the Eagles also had the Andy Reid era, which was
- 49:14Speaker 4: a very successful time. Cowboys cycle through some coaches here
- 49:18Speaker 4: and there, but they always had you know, almost every
- 49:20Speaker 4: single coach during that span has taken them to the
- 49:22Speaker 4: playoffs and had various levels of success.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Been a relevant team. The Cowboys have been a very
- 49:26Speaker 2: irrelevant team.
- 49:27Speaker 4: They're always they're always in it. They don't go very far,
- 49:30Speaker 4: but they're in it. But it's it's been a very
- 49:35Speaker 4: consistently competitive division. It still boggles my mind that we
- 49:40Speaker 4: don't have a repeat champion every year, every year that
- 49:43Speaker 4: it feels like this is definitely gonna be the year
- 49:45Speaker 4: something that happens. So for that reason, I feel like
- 49:49Speaker 4: there's the odds that the Eagles win the division this
- 49:52Speaker 4: year have to be zero at this point.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Exactly right.
- 49:56Speaker 1: It gets me concerned as a fan, of course, it
- 49:58Speaker 1: absolutely does. So all right, well, let's dive into some
- 50:01Speaker 1: of these teams here. Let's first start off with the
- 50:03Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys first and foremost here the team that you covered, Dave.
- 50:08Speaker 1: When looking at their off season and when you read
- 50:11Speaker 1: various articles you hear what the pundits have to say,
- 50:14Speaker 1: it seems that the Cowboys had what someone would call
- 50:17Speaker 1: a rather quote week off season from free agency and
- 50:22Speaker 1: more holes than positions of strength, I think heading into
- 50:26Speaker 1: the draft, and then after the NFL Draft, I'm wondering,
- 50:29Speaker 1: how would you assess where the Cowboys are in terms
- 50:32Speaker 1: of being a competitive team in the NFC East at
- 50:36Speaker 1: this particular point in time. Is we're recording here in May.
- 50:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's so funny to hear the characterization
- 50:42Speaker 4: that it was a week or a quiet off season,
- 50:45Speaker 4: which is fair. The Cowboys do what they always do.
- 50:48Speaker 4: They don't sign a whole bunch of big names, are
- 50:50Speaker 4: not super involved in free agency, but comparatively to the
- 50:54Speaker 4: last few years, they were very active in free agency.
- 50:57Speaker 4: They didn't spend a whole lot of money still, but
- 50:59Speaker 4: they brought in through through outside external free agent signings
- 51:03Speaker 4: and trades. With the Pickens trade now in up to
- 51:07Speaker 4: that's fourteen guys that they've brought in from outside the organization.
- 51:10Speaker 4: That's more than the last two seasons combined. So they've
- 51:14Speaker 4: been very active. Now these are not aside from George Pickens,
- 51:18Speaker 4: these aren't really you know, huge names. Linebackers Jack Samborn
- 51:23Speaker 4: and Kenneth Murray. One's a former first round pick. One
- 51:26Speaker 4: has a long history of playing with new defensive coordinator
- 51:29Speaker 4: Matt Eberfluss. They signed a few different offensive linemen that
- 51:32Speaker 4: have experienced starting in various roles but aren't necessarily going
- 51:37Speaker 4: to be sure fire starters, especially after drafting Tyler Booker.
- 51:41Speaker 4: So they did a lot of moves where going into
- 51:45Speaker 4: the draft, like I said, everyone thought they were going
- 51:47Speaker 4: to go receiver at some point early on, but outside
- 51:51Speaker 4: of receiver, it didn't really feel like there was any
- 51:53Speaker 4: position where Cowboys fans were gonna say, if we don't
- 51:56Speaker 4: get this, like, we are screwed. We have no other options.
- 52:00Speaker 4: The only position was wide receiver, and ironically it's the
- 52:02Speaker 4: one they did not address at all. Yes, but they
- 52:07Speaker 4: came out of this draft I think with some really
- 52:09Speaker 4: really great value in terms of the players that they got.
- 52:14Speaker 4: There's been a lot of conversation about Tyler Booker. If
- 52:16Speaker 4: you know it felt like a reach. I feel like
- 52:19Speaker 4: it was a reach. He was somebody that a lot
- 52:21Speaker 4: of mock drafts had going towards the end of the
- 52:23Speaker 4: first round, if not, you know, early second round. They
- 52:27Speaker 4: took him a twelfth overall. It's a little rich, but
- 52:29Speaker 4: at the same time, you know he's he was the
- 52:32Speaker 4: best guard in the draft. He's going to be a
- 52:34Speaker 4: plug and play starter at right guard, where they're now
- 52:36Speaker 4: losing Zach Martin who retired. Second round, they get Boston
- 52:40Speaker 4: College edge rusher Donovan as a ROKU who had sixteen
- 52:43Speaker 4: and a half sacks this last year. Pair him up
- 52:45Speaker 4: with Micah Parsons. That's nice. Third round, you get Savonne
- 52:49Speaker 4: Ravel out of East Carolina. Quarterback would have been a
- 52:53Speaker 4: first round player if he didn't tear his ACL this
- 52:55Speaker 4: past season, So you know, those are two guys that
- 52:57Speaker 4: a lot of people thought have first round talent, and
- 52:59Speaker 4: for a couple of different reasons, they were available where
- 53:01Speaker 4: they were. They got two running backs. That was another
- 53:05Speaker 4: big point of emphasis was, you know, they last year
- 53:08Speaker 4: they kind of punted on the running back position. Rico
- 53:10Speaker 4: Daddle turned out to be a thousand yard rusher. He went,
- 53:13Speaker 4: he left in free agency for the Panthers, and so
- 53:17Speaker 4: they drafted Jayden Blue out of Texas, philm MafA out
- 53:21Speaker 4: of Clemson. Kind of a thunder and lightning combo. Jamie
- 53:25Speaker 4: was very fast, he's kind of kind of thin, kind
- 53:27Speaker 4: of small, and MafA is the exact opposite, you know,
- 53:30Speaker 4: not the fastest guy out there, but he's just you know,
- 53:33Speaker 4: I think he's like two hundred and forty pounds of
- 53:35Speaker 4: pure muscle. Very much a short yarded kind of guy.
- 53:38Speaker 4: And they feel really good about that combo, maybe not
- 53:41Speaker 4: necessarily being workhorse Duro right from the start as rookies.
- 53:45Speaker 4: But some of those guys they brought in in free
- 53:48Speaker 4: agency also where Javonte Williams Miles Sanders. Of course, Eagles
- 53:51Speaker 4: fans are familiar with Sanders, two guys that have played
- 53:55Speaker 4: at a high level, but not recently, which is why
- 53:57Speaker 4: they were in the Cowboys range. So in a lot
- 54:01Speaker 4: of ways, the George Pickens trade is kind of the
- 54:03Speaker 4: cherry on top of what's been a very quietly effective offseason,
- 54:08Speaker 4: I think for restoring a lot of fans' faith in
- 54:11Speaker 4: this team, especially after the way that Mike McCarthy left
- 54:15Speaker 4: the team and then all the controversy, and I guess
- 54:18Speaker 4: just uncertainty about Brian Schottenheimer being elevated in a pretty
- 54:22Speaker 4: unorthodox way, going from non play calling offensive coordinator to
- 54:27Speaker 4: now he's the head coach, the offensive coordinator, the leader
- 54:30Speaker 4: of this team when nobody else was even considering him.
- 54:35Speaker 4: So all in all, from where we were at the
- 54:37Speaker 4: start of his introductory press conference to where we're at today,
- 54:40Speaker 4: I think the Cowboys have done a lot to earn
- 54:43Speaker 4: themselves some goodwill and make fans cautiously optimistic.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I got to say you mentioned one, Miles
- 54:49Speaker 1: Sanders here. I am a Penn State fan. I am
- 54:52Speaker 1: a Penn State fan, as listeners of our show know,
- 54:55Speaker 1: and it pains me every single time a Penn State
- 54:59Speaker 1: guy to the Dallas Cowboys. So some pain has been
- 55:02Speaker 1: shot through my heart this offseason just to let you know, Dave,
- 55:06Speaker 1: so you know, on that.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Note real quick. When the Cowboys were on the board
- 55:10Speaker 4: or on the clockt at twelve, Tyler Warren, Penn State legend,
- 55:15Speaker 4: Tyler Warren was still available, and I was I was tweeting,
- 55:18Speaker 4: I was posting on Blue Sky all over anywhere that
- 55:21Speaker 4: I could post. I was like, I want Tyler Warren, Like,
- 55:24Speaker 4: I know the Cowboys have Jake Ferguson, but I want
- 55:26Speaker 4: Tyler Warren. And of course they draft Tyler Booker. And
- 55:29Speaker 4: so when they get up there and they say they
- 55:30Speaker 4: select Tyler a heartstop and then they said Booker, and I.
- 55:36Speaker 1: Was like, so, well, the same thing happened with me,
- 55:39Speaker 1: because like Abduel Carter goes to the New York Giants,
- 55:41Speaker 1: and we're gonna get into New York New York Giants
- 55:43Speaker 1: in just a second here, but yes, Abduel Carter goes
- 55:45Speaker 1: to the Giants, and Michael Parsons has been on the
- 55:48Speaker 1: Cowboys now for some time, when Sean Lee was on
- 55:51Speaker 1: the Cowboys.
- 55:51Speaker 2: I tell you it's it's tough.
- 55:53Speaker 1: It is very tough, Dave, to be a Penn State
- 55:55Speaker 1: fan and having to see them go to the Dallas Cowboys.
- 55:58Speaker 1: But like I said, the New York Giants or who
- 56:00Speaker 1: I want to dive into next with you here because
- 56:03Speaker 1: like for many of us football fans, NFC East fans
- 56:06Speaker 1: and followers of our teams here, we just love seeing
- 56:09Speaker 1: what the Giants are doing or not doing. We love
- 56:12Speaker 1: their front office. We love Joe Shane as he blunders
- 56:15Speaker 1: his way through the off season here. Look, they went
- 56:18Speaker 1: heavy with the quarterback position during free agency with Russell
- 56:22Speaker 1: Wilson and with Jamis Winston. They drafted Jackson. Dart actually
- 56:26Speaker 1: moved up to get him. For me, again, the heartbreaker
- 56:31Speaker 1: was Abdull Carter going to this team with their first pick.
- 56:35Speaker 1: But they still have a lot of holes all around,
- 56:38Speaker 1: And I'm wondering, how would you assess where the Giants
- 56:40Speaker 1: are in terms of being a competitive team in this
- 56:44Speaker 1: division given the offseason that they've had.
- 56:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think I think their best case
- 56:50Speaker 4: scenario this season is basically being what they were in
- 56:53Speaker 4: Brian dables first year, where you know, you get a
- 56:56Speaker 4: couple of upset wins here and there, you beat teams
- 56:58Speaker 4: that are clearly worse than you, right maybe sneak your
- 57:01Speaker 4: way into the playoffs. Although I think the NFC crowd
- 57:03Speaker 4: is tougher this year than it was back in twenty
- 57:07Speaker 4: twenty one.
- 57:07Speaker 2: Especially with the healthy Daan Prescott, you know, coming in for.
- 57:11Speaker 4: Prescott, especially looking at the NFC North, how great they
- 57:14Speaker 4: were last year, and then their worst team just hired
- 57:18Speaker 4: you know, the best head coaching candidate in Ben Johnson.
- 57:21Speaker 4: So I think I think that's probably their best case scenario.
- 57:25Speaker 4: If the quarterback like comes into its form, whether it's
- 57:28Speaker 4: Russell Wilson, whether it's Jackson Dark, whoever it is. I
- 57:31Speaker 4: don't think best case scenario happens for them. But it
- 57:36Speaker 4: was really interesting to see how Joe Shane handled it
- 57:39Speaker 4: because he didn't really make moves that felt like a
- 57:43Speaker 4: GM who's on the hot seat, Yeah, you know, especially
- 57:48Speaker 4: not taking a quarterback, you know, third overall, going with
- 57:51Speaker 4: best player available in Obdua Carter and saying like, hey,
- 57:54Speaker 4: we can figure out quarterback. You know, obviously they trade
- 57:57Speaker 4: it up to get Dark, you know, and like you said,
- 58:01Speaker 4: the roster still has a lot of holes. It's not
- 58:03Speaker 4: like they've completely perfected this thing. But at the same time,
- 58:06Speaker 4: you look, you know, Russell Wilson was a very productive
- 58:09Speaker 4: starter in Seattle for a very long time. This past year,
- 58:12Speaker 4: in Pittsburgh, he was not super consistent, but he had
- 58:16Speaker 4: some definitely some really good moments here and there, and
- 58:18Speaker 4: they took him to the playoffs, so they can you
- 58:22Speaker 4: can be a winning team there. I really liked what
- 58:25Speaker 4: they did at running back with Kim Scataboo. As you
- 58:27Speaker 4: can see, I went to Arizona State, so I love
- 58:31Speaker 4: Kim Scataboo. I think he and Tyrone and Tracy are
- 58:34Speaker 4: going to be a really dynamic duo. There pained me
- 58:37Speaker 4: to see somebody guys going to Dallas paying me to
- 58:41Speaker 4: see him go to the Giants, and it took a
- 58:44Speaker 4: while for him to get drafted too, and I kept thinking, like, man, like,
- 58:48Speaker 4: when am I going to find out where he plays?
- 58:50Speaker 4: And of course it was to a division rival, so
- 58:53Speaker 4: that was hard to stomach. But I mean, outside of
- 58:56Speaker 4: the leak neighbors, they don't really have a whole lot
- 58:59Speaker 4: of weapon for Russell Wilson to work with. Don't really
- 59:02Speaker 4: have much of an offensive line, which is the biggest
- 59:04Speaker 4: concern for me is Russ is not exactly the best
- 59:08Speaker 4: with handling pressure. Yeah, and now he doesn't have an
- 59:11Speaker 4: offensive line. The defense that I think could be, you know,
- 59:16Speaker 4: could be good enough to keep them in some games. Now,
- 59:19Speaker 4: with all that pass rush they brought in on the secondary,
- 59:22Speaker 4: they brought in both Pulse and a Dvo and Javon
- 59:24Speaker 4: Holland to that secondary. I thought those were really good pickups.
- 59:27Speaker 4: But again, you're just you're looking and you're like, you've
- 59:29Speaker 4: got some talent here and there, but it's not really
- 59:31Speaker 4: a complete team. I could see them going the route
- 59:36Speaker 4: of like they can get pull some upsets here and there.
- 59:39Speaker 4: They're not going to be as bad as they were
- 59:40Speaker 4: this past season. But if I were a betting man,
- 59:44Speaker 4: which thankfully I'm not, I would probably pick them to
- 59:48Speaker 4: finish last in this division. Yeah, but I think that's
- 59:51Speaker 4: mostly just that mostly just speaks to how talented this
- 59:54Speaker 4: division is right.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Now, I think, and I know I also think it
- 59:57Speaker 1: speaks to how poorly, frankly they have actually drafted over
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the past say, three to four years. I mean, this
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: is a time when your team you want those players
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: from even three years ago to be starters, to be
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: real solid contributors to your team. Not seeing that necessarily
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: with this New York Giants team, for sure, But what
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: we are seeing.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: That was his first that was Shane's first pick. Yes, now,
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: Brian Burns, Abdua Carter. Where does he fit into the rotation?
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: Yeah, on the edge, absolutely absolutely. But like, there is
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: a team in this division that I think really shocked
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: us all this past season, and that is the Washington Commanders.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: So let's get into this commander's team and their offseason
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: because they do wonder what Jaden Daniels will do for
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: his encore this coming season. Dave, It's hard to believe
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: that he's gonna put up the same kind of performance
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: that he did this coming year like he did last year.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I mean we saw it with Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Certain teams figure you out here and there, and then
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: as the quarter back and leader of an offense, you
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: need to be able to adjust. It's gonna be interesting
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: to see how Jayden Daniels does that adjusting this coming season.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Now they have talent and Laramie tunsl Deebo Samuel of
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: course is on offense. Type of weapon will he possibly
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: be for them? Trey Amos is now in the secondary
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: for dan Quinn's defense here. How do you think we
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: should be looking at this Commander's team A team again
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: went to the NFC Championship Game this past year as
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: this team is really moving forward a lot of momentum
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: with this new stadium. Talk as well, what do you
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: what do you think about the Commanders here?
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: Well, the first thing I think about when I think
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: about the Commanders is how badly I want that for
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: the Cowboys, right because they have you know, they have
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: Dan Snyder, this owner that fans have just universally hated.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: They got rid of them. Yes, everything's coming up Commanders. Yes,
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: and then you know Jerry Jones is getting on and
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: he's talking about you know whatever Jerry Jones talks about,
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: We're just man, We're stuck with this.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: Till his dying day.
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: Yes, and they have Dan Quinn as the head coach,
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: who of course came from Dallas and a lot of
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: Cowboys fans wanted him to be the next head coach
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: whenever Mike McCarthy was done, so a little bit of
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: jealousy there also, Like I said, I went to Arizona State.
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: Jayden Daniels first played at Arizona State and then he
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: eventually transferred to LSU in the wake of the recruiting scandal,
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: which of course was perpetrated by head coach and former
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: Philadelphia Eagle Herm Edwards. Yes, yep, just one more way
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: the Eagles have caused me Immen's pain in my life.
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: But anyway, to the point about the Commanders, though, Yeah,
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: I think, I mean, they have a lot, a lot
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: of good momentum going for them. I think that they've
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: handled the off season probably in the best way because
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: Jayden and Daniel is all. It's all going to come
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: down to Jayden Daniels, like he powered them to that
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: great year last year, and a lot of people looked
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: at that and said, well, their defense was pretty terrible.
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: So they're probably going to spend all off season trying
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: to beef up their defense, and they you know, brought
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: some guys in here and there, Like you said, tree Amis,
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: I think he's going to be a really good starter
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: in that defense. But they also really, more than anything,
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: doubled down offense. Like you said, they traded for Tunsul,
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: They drafted Josh Connery, another offensive lineman in the first round.
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: Getting Deebo Samuel is big. It seems like their whole
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: their whole offseason approach was how can we really go
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: all in on offense, make sure that Jaden Daniels has
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: enough support that one he doesn't have to shoulder the
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: load all year like he did this past year. And two,
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: how do we prevent him from having a sophomore slump?
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: Now that said, it could still happen. He starts missing
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: open guys, he starts making the wrong read on those
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: option plays. You know, no amount of talent in the
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: world will make up for that. So it really still
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: does come down to the quarterback and how he's able
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: to handle it. And you know, having watched him at
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: Arizona State and then following him when he went to LSU,
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: my general impression is that he won't have much of
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: a sophomore slump because this is a guy with just
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: a really high work ethic, high football IQ. I think
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: he's somebody that is going to attack it in the
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: right way. You mentioned Jalen Hurts and how team kind
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: of figured him out after a little bit. He also
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: then he changed his game a little bit.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: There are adaptions. Yeah, he's you know, and I think.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: Similar mental makeup of you know, Jayden's the kind of
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: guy that he's going to figure out how to figure
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: out who them figuring him out? Yeah, And uh so
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: that's that's really I think in my mind the hope
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: for the Commanders not being as good as if jayde
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: Daniels just drops the ball, yes, which I don't see happening,
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: but a guy can help.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. We all have hope.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: This is the time of year in the NFL, during
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: the off season where we all have hope. And I
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: say that as being a Philadelphia Eagles. Of course, they
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl this past year, and the hope
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: is that there is a repeat in the future. So
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: let's talk about this Eagles team here. I think still
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: slated to probably be one of the top powerhouses in
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: the NFC and likely in the NFC East Division. Dave,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: I mean they lost some talent on defense, like Josh Sweat,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: Milton Williams, losing CJ. Gardner Johnson, I'm very I was
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: very concerned about that in terms of the back end
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: of the defense, but they drafted Jahad Campbell, who was
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: one of the most versatile defensive players in the draft.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: The offensive corps is still there, including an offensive line
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: that just punishes defenses in the trenches. What are your
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: thoughts on how the Eagles and their offseason has gone
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: thus far and how they're looking as a team moving forward,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: possibly being able to repeat if you can, you know,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: take off the you know, take off the the Cowboys
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: blinders for just a second, you know, in an objectionable fashion.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: How do you see this Eagles offseason going?
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think, I mean, he's like, where
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: do I go in this? Here? The biggest thing for
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: me anytime that a team is coming off a Super
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: Bowl way and is how much of that Super Bowl
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: hangover going to be an impact? Absolutely, it's very real.
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: I mean, the last time the Eagles won a Super Bowl,
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: you guys almost missed the playoffs. You had to win
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: the last three games of the regular season. You're snuck
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: in as the last playoff team. And that was with
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: Doug Peterson as the head coach, which I don't think
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: it's controversial to say he's a little bit more of
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: a stable personality than Nick sirial It's a little more
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: volatile and when things are going bad with Sirianni in
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: that locker room. So and even I mean the year
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: after the Eagles were in the Super Bowl and lost
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: to the Chiefs, that was the season where they brought
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: in Matt Patricia, right, and.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Yes, it was just a disaster. I mean it was
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: it was falling off a cliff like we've never seen,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: like we've never seen Dave.
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: And one of my favorite seasons personally.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Yes, I would imagine.
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: Yes, you said, how you're a big fan of Joe Shane,
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: I'm a big fan of Matt Patricia. There you go,
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: and but but really I do always question how much
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: that hangover is going to be an impact there. And
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: then you know, I look at the Eagles roster, like
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: you said, a big part of that offensive nucleus is back.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: But I think you guys are rightfully the odds on
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: favorite to repeat in the division. But I also see,
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: definitely see a world where things kind of fall apart
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: a little bit. You know, Saquon Barkley, we know he's
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: had the injury history. He had more carries last year
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: than he's ever had in his entire career. Is he
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: gonna be able to hold up?
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I honestly I cannot see Saquon Barkley having the
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: same amount of carries the yardage that he had last year.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: The ball is gonna need to get thrown around or
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: given to other weapons on the offense.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: He just can't. He can't have the same type of
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: season he had last.
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: Year, right, it's it doesn't seem He'll probably still be good,
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: it just doesn't seem as sustainable. And then you've got
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: a J. Brown and DeVante Smith. They've alos miss missed
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: some games with injury this past year. Dallas Goddard's kind
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: of getting up there in age and they maybe trading him,
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: who knows. And of course there's the change in offensive coordinators,
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: so you know, there's I'm not saying that like the
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: offense is gonna fall off, Cliff, but I'm like, if
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: you're looking for a way that that they don't think, yeah,
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: you can see how, you know where those things would
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: would happen a little bit. You mentioned also some of
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: the guys that they lost on defense. You know, Vic
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: Fangio is an absolute genius. He'll find a way to
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: make up for it. But there might be a couple
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: of games here and there, especially early on, where the
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: defense struggles a little bit before they iron out the Kings.
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: In such a competitive division, that might be. Again, if
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: you're looking for a way to explain how they don't
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: repeat his division champs, that might be where it comes
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: into play. But yeah, I mean this is you know,
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: Howie Roseman is one of the best gems in the NFL.
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: He is always going to figure out how to plug
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: those holes, how to add talent. If he ever gets
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: into the regular season and he feels like I haven't
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: done enough, he will make those trades. He will be aggressive.
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: That said, I didn't really love their draft. I didn't
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: hate it, but in terms of the four NFC East teams,
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: it was the one I liked the least. You mentioned
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: Johan Campbell obviously very versatile player, but it is also
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: the first time since nineteen seventy nine the Eagles drafted
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: an off ball linebacker, which also in that same draft,
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: you guys also took a kicker in a punter, so
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: this was very much before the position value was like
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: a big thing in drafts, very different time. But it
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: just felt like and trading up a spot to take
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: an off ball linebacker, even though he does offer pass
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: rush value, it felt very non Howie. And then I
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: loved and the Andrew mccuba pick. I thought he was
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: really undervalued. And then all the other guys that you
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: took I don't really see making a huge impact year one,
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: although they all have like potential to develop into starters
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: down the road. And yeah, yeah, and necessarily being like
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: they're gonna be They're gonna be part of the twenty
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: twenty five team in a meaningful way. So again I
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: don't I didn't think it was a terrible draft, but
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: it you know, when when the Campbell pick happened, I
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: saw a lot of people that were like, how he
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: does it again? And I was like, when he traded up,
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: I assumed it was gonna be for a receiver and
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: offensive lineman, a pass rusher. Yeah, because that's what the
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: Eagles do. Yeah, And I don't know, I wasn't. I
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: wasn't completely blown away, but all right, I mean the Eagles,
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: you know, coming off of Super Bowl, you don't necessarily
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: need to find, you know, all the best playmakers because
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: obviously you just had enough talent to win the Super Bowl.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Absolutely, well, buddy, that's gonna do it for us here
