- 0:00Philadelphia Phillies faced the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium for a Thursday
- 0:11night game on August 18, 1981.
- 0:14The 1981 season was interrupted by a two-month-long player strike mid-season.
- 0:18The league decided to split the season into two halves, with the leader in each division
- 0:22getting a berth to the playoffs.
- 0:24Philadelphia was the defending world champs and won the NL East in the first half of the
- 0:27season under manager Dallas Green.
- 0:30The Reds finished the first half of the season in second place, a game and a half behind
- 0:33the Dodgers in the NL West under manager John McNamara.
- 0:36They were fighting for the Astros for the lead in the second half of the season.
- 0:40This audio recording is from the Cincinnati Radio broadcast featuring announcers Marty
- 0:43Brenneman and Joe Nuxhall.
- 0:45If you're ready now, the starting lineup tonight, first for the Phillies, leading off and playing
- 0:50first base Pete Rose.
- 0:51Manny Trillo will bat second and he'll play second base.
- 0:55Gary Matthews will be in left field batting third, hitting fourth and third base Mike
- 0:59Schmidt.
- 1:00Blake McBride will bat fifth and play right field, hitting number six, center fielder
- 1:05Gary Maddux.
- 1:06Larry Bowe will be at shortstop and he'll bat seventh, hitting eighth and during the
- 1:10catching Bob Boone is the crowd here at Riverfront, now starts up and a standing ovation for Pete
- 1:16Rose as he is standing off to the right of the plate waiting to lead it off here.
- 1:20And batting ninth and pitching for the Phillies, left-hander Steve Carlson.
- 1:24Michael Philadelphia rose at first, Trillo at second, Matthews in left field.
- 1:28Schmidt at third, McBride in right, Maddux in center, with Boa at short, Boone catching
- 1:33and Carlson pitching.
- 1:35For the Reds, Dave Collins to lead it off, he'll be in right.
- 1:38Ronnie Oster will bat second and play second base.
- 1:41Dave Concepcion hitting third will be at shortstop.
- 1:45Left fielder George Foster will bat fourth.
- 1:47Danny Dreeson will bat number five, he'll play first base.
- 1:50Ray Knight will play third base and bat sixth, hitting seventh in center field, Sam Mejias.
- 1:55Michael Berry will catch and bat eighth and on the mound pitching and batting number nine,
- 1:59Tom Sievers.
- 2:00Again, Collins in right, Oster at second, Concepcion at shortstop.
- 2:04Foster in left, Dreeson at first, Knight at third, with Mejias in center, O'Berry catching
- 2:09and Sievers on the mound.
- 2:11Joe, a rematch of opening day.
- 2:13Well, go back to opening day, both fish very well.
- 2:19We have that tonight, doesn't look like there'll be too many runs scored.
- 2:22Here's Rose and here's Sievers and the first pitch is inside for a ball and this game is
- 2:27underway.
- 2:28Tom, after his eighth victory of the season and this is his second start in the second
- 2:33half of the season, did not pitch well in Los Angeles, line drive, base hit, center
- 2:37field.
- 2:38Well, Pete Rose jumps on the second pitch and lines one into center for a game opening
- 2:42base hit and that'll bring to the plate second baseman Manny Trio.
- 2:46Well, I guess you could say these ball clubs have been having the same problem since we
- 2:51got started a week ago last night and that's lack of offense and with some exceptions,
- 2:56not so strong pitching.
- 2:57Well, you know, you look at both ball clubs, Marty, and you know they're very capable of
- 3:02breaking loose at any time, so little ball clubs like this, you don't know when they
- 3:08might break loose either.
- 3:09Manny Trio takes a strike, got a fastball over on the inside corner, Rose at first base,
- 3:14he has singled the center.
- 3:17The Phillies come in with a record in the second half of only two wins and five losses.
- 3:21They are three and a half back in the Eastern Division.
- 3:25Here's a one strike pitch and Trio takes this one inside, a ball and a strike.
- 3:29The Reds on the other hand have won three and lost four after the two to one win over
- 3:32the Giants on Sunday afternoon and right now stand two back of the division leading Atlanta
- 3:38Braves.
- 3:39In field, a double play depth, Trio batting two 76, the one one to him, swinging a miss
- 3:44on a pitch out of way.
- 3:46Manny going after a pitch out of the strike zone to fall behind of the ball in two strikes.
- 3:50Of course, realistically speaking, the way things are structured now, the pressure on
- 3:55the Phillies is not nearly as great as it is on the Reds.
- 3:57They have already been declared the first half champions of the Eastern Division.
- 4:02So no matter what they do from here on out, they are in the inter-divisional playoffs
- 4:06at season's end.
- 4:08Trio swings and fouls it back and out of play.
- 4:13Manny with three homers, 18 RBIs, Rose at first, Matthews, the left fielder in the on
- 4:18deck circle, he'll be up next.
- 4:20We've got Greeson at first, Oster at second, Concepcion at short stop, Knight at third,
- 4:25Foster in left field, Mahias in center, Collins in right, and O'Berry catching.
- 4:29The right hander with a pause and now he steps back off the pitching rubber, takes a look
- 4:33over to Rose at first base as Trio backs away from the plate.
- 4:38Okay, Sievers straightens up on the mound, he kicks and he throws, Trio swings a fly
- 4:42ball in the right center and Sam Mahias will be there and that is out number one.
- 4:49So following the leadoff single by Rose, Trio flies to center, that will bring up Gary Matthews.

- 5:10The announcers on this broadcast are employed by the Cincinnati Reds.
- 5:13Matthews having a fine year batting 3-0-2 in his first year in the Philadelphia Double
- 5:20Knits and Sievers misses high with a fastball to him.
- 5:28Standard batter and a pitch coming to him and side ball too.
- 5:31Talking about opening day and the fact that as is the case tonight so it was then, Sievers
- 5:37against Carleton, neither starting pitcher gained a decision in that game won by Cincinnati
- 5:413-2.
- 5:42Tommy Hume got the victory and Sparky Lyle took the loss when Danny Dreeson drew a bases
- 5:47loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Reds a winning run.
- 5:51But both pitched very, very well that particular day.
- 5:55Siever behind 2-0, Matthews waving to bat around, swings, fly ball, center field, coming
- 6:01over toward the alley is Mejias and he'll run it down.
- 6:04He loses his cap but makes the catch and they're 2-0.
- 6:09The matter will be third baseman and clean up batter Mike Schmidt.
- 6:15Schmidty batting 2-94 leading the National League in home runs with 18 and his second
- 6:22in the league and runs batted in with 47, some 10 behind George Foster.
- 6:27And I'm sure you know the story in his career in this ballpark.
- 6:30Schmidt has hit 15 career home runs here at Riverfront and has been on a tear of weight
- 6:37as he takes a strike on the outside edge.
- 6:39He's had four home runs in his last six ball games and has batted safely in 13 out of the
- 6:47last 16 on a 3-39 clip.
- 6:51Schmidty pitches low for a ball, the count evens on the right-handed batting Philadelphia
- 6:54power plant, one ball and one strike.
- 6:56Lee wire the plate on fire and specs the baseball.
- 6:59On the bases, Harry Wendelstad at first, his second Dutch runner at third base, Ed Montague.
- 7:05Rose led off the game with a single to center but 3-0's fly to center and so too is Gary
- 7:08Matthews.
- 7:14Mulberry sending out the sign and Siebert turns and throws on to first, Rose steps back.
- 7:22Now the stretch and Siebert continues to be concerned about Rose possibly moving.
- 7:29A couple of times he's checked off on the mound.
- 7:35Now the stretch and out of the plate with a 1-1 and Schmidt takes strike two.
- 7:40I tell you the Dodgers played and won this afternoon in Chicago after the Cubs beat them
- 7:473-1 yesterday.
- 7:48Burt Hooten went the distance this afternoon shutting out Chicago, 5-0 to finals.
- 7:53The Cubs got only four base hits as Hooten wins for the eighth time this season.
- 7:59Schmidt behind on the count and swings and he misses.
- 8:02Siebert struck him out.
- 8:04In the Philadelphia first, no runs, one hit and one man left on.
- 8:08After a half and a base fall in the first of a two game series, the Phillies nothing
- 8:12and the Reds are coming up.
- 8:15It took place almost 2500 years ago.
- 8:18A man with a message that had to be delivered 26 miles away and drawing upon his every reserve
- 8:24with the right combination of spirit, skill and determination, he delivered that message
- 8:28by running those 26 miles from the plane of Marathon to Athens, Greece.
- 8:34The first Marathon.
- 8:36At Marathon Oil, we know we have a name with a heritage, a name we strive to live up to.
- 8:41We know it takes that right combination of spirit, skill and determination to deliver
- 8:45the service and products you deserve.
- 8:47It's how we developed our new special gasoline that can give you better fuel economy, better
- 8:53driving, reduced pollutants and a cleaner engine requiring lower maintenance.
- 8:57It's how we keep striving to give you the best service we can.
- 9:02Service that shows we care about you and your car because like that messenger from Marathon
- 9:072500 years ago, we're determined to deliver.
- 9:10Marathon with the long distance gasoline, best in the long run.
- 9:18Well the action continues tomorrow night here at Riverfront.
- 9:20The Reds and the Phillies game time is 7.35.
- 9:22It will be Laurie Christensen against Bruce Beretti.
- 9:24Plenty of seats available at all prices.
- 9:27Looking ahead to the weekend, the New York Mets will be in Friday Shrine night, Saturday
- 9:30Farmers night, there will be an afternoon game on Sunday and then on Monday it will
- 9:34be cost cutter night and that's a senior citizens day too.
- 9:37How about getting the family or friends together and touch some baseball on this home stand.
- 9:42Come on down tomorrow night as the Reds take on the Phillies game time, 7.35.
- 9:48Steve Carlton, eight, nine wins and two losses.
- 9:52With a 295 ERA, he was beaten in his last start, five to two against the St. Louis Cardinals
- 9:59five days ago.
- 10:00That was the first time that the Cardinals had beaten him after ten consecutive Carlton
- 10:04victories over the St. Louis team.
- 10:06And of course the last time he opposed the Reds here was on opening day when he went
- 10:11seven and he's giving up nine hits in only one run.
- 10:13He struck out eight and walked four.
- 10:15Dave Collins deleted off batting 295.
- 10:18Collins one of a number of Reds players and quite a slump of late.
- 10:22First pitch is high for a ball to him.
- 10:24Of course Carlton has not had much success in his career against the Reds as his nine
- 10:28wins, 17 loss ledger will attest.
- 10:34Left-hander with a big kick in the pitch and Collins grounds it to third.
- 10:37Dere Schmidt drawn in making the play on the big hop and throwing on across the rows to
- 10:40get the out.
- 10:41That will bring up Ronnie Oster as we check out the Phillies defensively.
- 10:47Rose at first, Trio at second, Schmidt third, Boa at short.
- 10:51In the outfield Matthews in left, Maddox in center and McBride in right and Boone catching.
- 10:57Going down those score bottom of the first inning, Oster hitting 284.
- 11:03Pitch is at the knees for a call strike.
- 11:10On deck shortstop Dave Concepcion.
- 11:14Carlton dealing and Oster swings and sends a pop-up out behind second base.
- 11:19Manny Trio calling for it as Boa gives way and the second baseman has it for the second
- 11:24quick out of the Reds first inning.
- 11:28Here's Concepcion a 3-0-4 batting average with five homers and third in the league and
- 11:32runs batted in with 45.
- 11:36You talk about Sieber and Carlton and Boa they can throw some numbers at you that individually
- 11:41or collectively speaking are just awesome.
- 11:45No question at all about the fact that these two fellows will, well you'd have to feel
- 11:50they're going to be first ballot Hall of Fame selections when it comes about.
- 11:56Pitch over for a call strike.
- 11:57You serious?
- 11:58Yeah.
- 11:59Oh okay.
- 12:00I think so.
- 12:01Stranger things have happened.
- 12:05No balls in the strike and it's low for a ball one and one.
- 12:09Carlton trying to retire the Reds in order.
- 12:12Collins a grand out to third, Oster a pop to second, Concepcion a swing and a miss and
- 12:17baby down a ball two strikes.
- 12:22Carlton fifth on the all-time strikeout list.
- 12:24Sieber of course is sixth, the second on the all-time nationally strikeout list behind
- 12:28Bob Gibson and needs only 50 more to pass him.
- 12:31He got around on the breaking ball.
- 12:34That's all for Concepcion and that's all for Cincinnati.
- 12:37Three up and three down.
- 12:38We played one and it's the Reds and the Phillies nothing nothing.
- 12:42There's a lot of yard work ahead and you'll need a tough bill to last chainsaw to take
- 12:46on the outdoors like home light.
- 12:49From Lancaster Hardware you'll find the big XL super 2 16 inch saw for only $169.88.
- 12:55Also the XEL 12 inch chainsaw with safety tip and safety lock switch to help prevent
- 12:59accidents.
- 13:00Now only $49.95.
- 13:01The XEL 10 only $39.95.
- 13:04So prepare yourself for outdoor jobs the right way.
- 13:07The home light chainsaw way from Lancaster Hardware 134 South Columbus Street.
- 13:12Ah, new stereo.
- 13:14Yeah.
- 13:15Does your insurance cover it?
- 13:16Hey, we rent.
- 13:17We're not homeowners.
- 13:18Look around you.
- 13:19Imagine the cost of replacing these things.
- 13:22Your state farm agent has insurance designed for renters like you.
- 13:25Yeah?
- 13:26Renters might not need to insure a house but you've got a lot of things worth insuring.
- 13:31Talk to your state farm agent.
- 13:33In the next intensity state farm agent Earl Hazlett at 441 Summit Street.
- 13:37Take the Pepsi.
- 13:38No score at the end of one inning of play and this one between the Reds and the Phillies.
- 13:48Bate McBride will start off inning number two against Tom Seaver followed by Gary Maddux
- 13:53and Larry Boa.
- 13:54I guess from a physical standpoint the strike really helped Bate McBride.
- 14:00He was on the disabled list after undergoing knee surgery when the strike came on the 12th
- 14:05of June and of course in the period of time when no baseball on the major league level
- 14:09was being played he got well and he's back active again.
- 14:13The pitcher swung out and popped up outside of third.
- 14:15Knight giving chase over to the Phillies dugout and reaching over the railing he makes the
- 14:19catch.
- 14:24One pitch one out as McBride pops up foul to third baseman Ray Knight and now as Larry
- 14:31Boa Gary Maddux heads toward the plate Tom Seaver and Michael Berry meet between the
- 14:35plate and the mound.
- 14:37Knight reaching over the railing and making a nice pick off of the foul pop off the bat
- 14:42of Bate McBride.
- 14:44Maddux hitting 271 with four home runs and 25 runs batted in.
- 14:48The Reds dividing a four game weekend series against the San Francisco Giants getting fine
- 14:56pitching Sunday from Mario Soto and Tommy Hume.
- 15:00Here's a foul to the screen by the right handed batter.
- 15:05Other games in the National League tonight San Francisco plays at Pittsburgh.
- 15:09Louis Teod making his second strike for the Bucs against Ed Witson who blanked the Reds
- 15:13here Friday night.
- 15:14That's a pitch a low ball one and one.
- 15:16New York and Atlanta Ed Lynch against Rick Mailer.
- 15:19San Diego plays at St. Louis Chris Welsh against Silvio Martinez and Montreal at Houston Steve
- 15:24Rogers against Bob Nepper.
- 15:26Here's a drive in the right center field.
- 15:28Ryan Collins however will be there to make the catch.
- 15:32Two outs.
- 15:34Why that ball really in this case slicing back at Davie and almost ran under it.
- 15:43He sure did.
- 15:45Made the play on the ball with a running catch in the alley and now here's Larry Bowe the
- 15:49Phillies with shooting shortstop who is having a pretty good year.
- 15:53Bowe batting 278 has knocked in 20 runs.
- 15:59We were making sure his defense is set and now brings it on up there and Bowe takes his
- 16:03pitch high for a ball.
- 16:05First game of a double header is underway in the American League involving the Brewers
- 16:08and the Rangers down in Texas.
- 16:10It's three nothing Milwaukee after three.
- 16:12Ben Ogilvie hit a three run home run in the first inning on John Matlock.
- 16:17This one hit foul and now a play down the left field line.
- 16:21Talking about that Dodger loss yesterday the Dodgers in losing to the Cubs also lost to
- 16:27services of their second baseman Davie Lopes.
- 16:30Apparently he had a groin pull that has resulted in him being placed on a 15 day disable list.
- 16:36Two balls and a strike and the Dodgers promptly call up a highly regarded second baseman from
- 16:41their AA Farm Club at San Antonio Steve Sacks.
- 16:45Two one pitch.
- 16:46Swung on.
- 16:47Popped up.
- 16:48Left side.
- 16:49That would be the inning.
- 16:51Concepcion ranging back and squeezes it to the out.
- 16:53Three up and three down.
- 16:54We are in the middle of the second.
- 16:56Cincinnati and Philadelphia nothing nothing.
- 16:58Look who switched to natural life and faith is why you switch.
- 17:07Ah.
- 17:08Look who switched to natural life faith is why you switch.
- 17:17Jimmy Masuda famous baseball managerial type.
- 17:20You switched?
- 17:21Nope.
- 17:22I always drink natural life cause it tastes better to me.
- 17:26Good deal and natural life's brewed with only natural ingredients.
- 17:30Buy another round?
- 17:31I know I can manage that.
- 17:32Hey beer tender two more natural life.
- 17:35Faith is what you like in this.
- 17:38And more of what you like is in this.
- 17:42Faith is why you switch to the taste of natural natural life.
- 17:49Faith is why you switch to the taste of natural natural life.
- 17:52Faith is why you switch.
- 17:53Faith is why you switch.
- 17:54Faith is why you switch.
- 17:55Faith is why you switch.
- 17:56St. Louis.
- 17:57After the game remember to pick up more natural life beer.
- 18:03Natural life tastes is why you'll switch.
- 18:05Now the Reds big salute to the agriculture industry is coming up Saturday night.
- 18:09It will be farmers night as the Reds take on the Mets here.
- 18:11Hope you're planning on being on hand for the game.
- 18:14You may take home that International Harvester diesel powered tractor or the Datsun 4x4 half
- 18:19ton sport pickup truck or one of the many other prizes the Reds will be giving away
- 18:23that night.
- 18:24And if you're coming to the game be sure to get here early for all the pregame funds.
- 18:27Ron Oster and Russ Nixon will represent the Reds in the cow milking contest before the
- 18:32game.
- 18:33They'll go against Pat Zachary and Dyer Miller of the Mets.
- 18:35Johnny Bench and Larry Bittner and the team of Michael Berry and Joe Nolan will make up
- 18:38the Reds entry in the Egg Throw.
- 18:40Paul Mosco and Tom Hume will be partners in a blindfolded wheelbarrow competition.
- 18:45The pregame funds starts about 6.30.
- 18:46Then it's the Reds and the Mets at seven o'clock this Saturday evening on farmers night.
- 18:52Final of the second about to unfold and the Reds will do it with George Foster.
- 19:00Carlton works him long away.
- 19:01George getting 310 with 16 home runs and as we mentioned earlier leading the major leagues
- 19:06in RBI's with 57.
- 19:10Last two balls and no strikes.
- 19:11Foster has really been on a tear of late.
- 19:14Has hit at a 435 since play resumed a week ago last night with two homers, five runs
- 19:20scored and eight RBI's.
- 19:21He swings on the 2-0 and doesn't get it.
- 19:26In addition to leading the league in RBI's he's tied for second in home runs and also
- 19:31in base hits with 76.
- 19:33And his 310 batting average is tied for ninth place in the league.
- 19:37He is having a fine, fine year at the plate.
- 19:40Carlton ready with a 2-1 pitch and here it is.
- 19:43Now back and over the screen.
- 19:49Was George for the sixth time in his career here with the Reds at Riverfront hit a red
- 19:55seed home run Friday night in the second game of that twin bill against the Giants.
- 20:05Carlton's even with him two balls and two strikes as Danny Dreeson waits.
- 20:09Here comes the pitch and a hard smash foul, just foul, pass Schmidt and down the third
- 20:14baseline.
- 20:15Gary Matthews apparently didn't see the foul signal given by Ed Montague.
- 20:21He came up with that ball and ready to fire quickly towards second base.
- 20:25He's a hustler out there.
- 20:282-2 in holding.
- 20:32Carlton pitching.
- 20:33Foster taking a full count.
- 20:35It's low.
- 20:37Bob Boone hanging a sign.
- 20:48Carlton shakes him off now gets what he wants and brings it on up there.
- 20:52That's ball four.
- 20:53Missed with a breaking ball inside.
- 20:54Foul to the first base runner for the Reds.
- 20:57The batter Danny Dreeson.
- 21:02Danny having a rough go of it at the play batting 192 with six homers and 25 RBIs.
- 21:18Pitch is high, ball one.
- 21:25Foster taking the short lead against Rose at first.
- 21:28Dreeson taking a breaking ball, two balls in those strikes.
- 21:36Carlton he doesn't waste any time on that mound.
- 21:38Now throws to first and they call a balk on him.
- 21:40Harry Wendelstadt, the first base umpire, immediately called it.
- 21:43All Steve did, Harry Wendelstadt, the first base umpire, showed him.
- 21:48He brought his right leg back across the pitching rubber and threw over there and that's a balk
- 21:53Steve didn't question it at all.
- 21:57Also Rezged Foster free access to second base on the balk call against Lefty, Carlton and
- 22:03Danny waiting on the 2-0 pitch.
- 22:05He swings and he misses.
- 22:16Foster tender kicks and throws, swing and a miss, strike two, two balls and two strikes.
- 22:28Danny's seeing a lot of breaking balls from Carlton and he started to go on that pitch
- 22:32but held up in time and the count goes full.
- 22:35Three and two.
- 22:43Foster at second, nobody out.
- 22:44Here in the bottom of the second inning and that is ball four.
- 22:46He threw him a breaking ball and missed with it so Dreef and gets the second a back to
- 22:51back walk as the Reds show them at first and second for third baseman Ray Knight.
- 23:00Knight batting two fifty six.
- 23:01He's homered five times and is driven in twenty runs.
- 23:06Hits safely in sixth out of his last seven games batting three oh four.
- 23:16That's a strike at the knees so Carlton in a bit of trouble of his own doing here in
- 23:19the second inning walking Foster balking him to second and now walking Danny Dreeson missing
- 23:25with a payoff pitch to the Reds first baseman.
- 23:33The baseball strike cancel out two series between these two clubs one in Philadelphia
- 23:38and one also here in Cincinnati the Reds still have one trip to go into Philly.
- 23:44That's a fastball up and away one ball and one strike.
- 23:52Philly's outfield specifically left fielder Matthews and right fielder McBride giving
- 23:57Knight room down both lines.
- 23:59The infielder double play depth to on and nobody out no score second inning the one
- 24:03one tonight swung on and foul back.
- 24:07Carlton ahead of the ball two strikes.
- 24:11It's been an amazing story the success that the Reds have had over the Phillies.
- 24:18Cincinnati has won the seasonal series from the Phillies fourteen times in the last sixteen
- 24:22years and especially here at Riverfront the Phillies have really had a hard time winning
- 24:28the game.
- 24:29Swung on a big bouncer to third there Schmidt he'll go on to second for one and that's all
- 24:32they'll get.
- 24:33He fielded that big bouncer deep behind the third base bag and had only really one play
- 24:38and that was the throw on to Manny Trio to get the force play on the middle man Danny
- 24:42Dreeson.

- 26:39but has since retired the last six in a row and he'll start it off here in the third against
- 26:44catcher Bob Boone and here with a play by play Joe Nuxall.

- 27:24Sabres 1 0 swung on in a fly ball left field.
- 27:28Foster moving in George waiting and he has it one out.
- 27:33I mean Steve Carlton to the plate Steve a 150 batting average for RBI is a double and
- 27:43two triples.
- 27:44He's a lifetime as a hitter.
- 27:48He's been a pretty good inning pitcher.
- 27:51Like to 207 batting average he's had 266 hits coming into this season takes a strike from
- 27:59the season foul has nine home runs career wise and 106 RBI looks at a fastball low and
- 28:08it evens one and one.
- 28:15I'm back with a one one server gets the outside corner closed strike two and account one and
- 28:21two to Steve Carlton.
- 28:25We're working quickly.
- 28:26Here's the one to that song on and foul back to the screen down holding a ball two strikes.
- 28:39Last night in Indianapolis the Indians lost but for a householder continues swinging a
- 28:45hot bat Carlton lines one foul back and off to the left of the screen.
- 28:50Here it is 19 call run of the year with a man on but the Indians lost to Springfield
- 28:56four to three one two again swung on and popped down the left field line foul giving chase
- 29:02Dave Concepcion and he can't not get to it.
- 29:05The ball bouncing on the mound down to the bullpen account holds a ball two strikes.
- 29:14Meanwhile the Reds billing farm club scored three times in the last of the ninth inning
- 29:19to pull one out eight to seven over Idaho Falls and Billy said a new home attendance
- 29:24record sixty two thousand and they have seven home dates left.
- 29:30One and two to count again the pitch Carlton swings and misses a slider in on him and Tom
- 29:39has his second strike out.
- 29:41The two away and Pete Rose the batter he's got a standing ovation as he stood off to
- 29:52the right of the plate waiting on Steve to complete his warm-up to start the game.
- 30:04New odd base is empty a line in the pitch Rose swings and bounces to Oster at second
- 30:12Ron has it going to Dresden and a quick getting for Tom Seaver that's nine straight now for
- 30:16Seaver and it's the middle of the third.

- 31:19and Dave Collins against Steve Carlton.
- 31:30Steve has struck out one has walked two and the Reds had a threat going in the second
- 31:39when Foster and Greeson both walked but Ray Knight forced Greeson at second and then Mahias
- 31:46rounded into a 5-4-3 double for you to end the threat.
- 31:51Michael Berry deleted off Mike hitting 210 with all run for RBI's two doubles one triple.
- 32:01Waiting on O'Berry Mike's there and Carlton winds and delivers the first pitch.
- 32:13O'Berry swings and bounces at the board.
- 32:16O'Berry has it to Rose one away.
- 32:24One down and here's Tom Seaver.
- 32:30Seaver hitting 133 all run for RBI's.
- 32:38Both of these guys quick workers.

- 33:17the bounce.
- 33:18A one-oh-I am Seaver's first base and Dave Collins steps in.

- 33:56Well now with a career total of 3069 strikeouts first pitch to Collins and Carlton strike.
- 34:04Last year Carlton struck out 286 and that's the second in his career.
- 34:10He struck out 310 back in 1972 his first year with Philadelphia.
- 34:18The 0-1 swung on and a very high pop into shallow right center backing out his trio
- 34:24and he has it two away.
- 34:28Two down Ron Oster the batter.
- 34:34Ron in the first inning popped out the trio at second base.
- 34:50First pitch to Oster low and outside of ball.
- 35:00A pitch Ron takes it high and it's 2-0.
- 35:05Sandy Koufax of course struck out 382 batters in 1965 and again in 66 the pitch Oster swings
- 35:14in a hard one bouncer to Boyd Shorty flips to 3-0 the force of Seaver and that's the
- 35:20inning.
- 35:21The Reds no runs they hit no errors they're under left hand at the end of three bullies
- 35:26nothing Reds nothing.
- 35:27Look who's rich in natural light and taste is why we switch.

- 36:28Those scores will go to the fourth inning and it will be second base and many three oh
- 36:34the leader off all of the Gary Matthews and then Mike Schmidt for the Phillies.
- 36:39Each team with a base hit a one hit the boys have had that belongs to Pete Rose in the
- 36:45first inning of course the reds one base hit belongs to Tom Seaver that's coming in the
- 36:50third.
- 36:53Seaver ready to go to work on Manny Trio.
- 36:55Trio in the first inning a fly ball to Sam Mahias in right center field.
- 37:00Trio a 276 batting average.
- 37:02Seaver delivers.
- 37:03Trio swings and fouls back to the screen.
- 37:14Tom looking to Michael Berry has his sign double pumps and the 0-1 breaking ball low
- 37:22and it evens a ball of strike to Trio.
- 37:29Seaver looking for his eighth win of the year he's back with the 1-1.
- 37:33Trio swings and misses a good change.
- 37:381-2.
- 37:481-2 pitch and Cindy Durden bounces through O'Berry.
- 37:52Count evens 2-2.

- 38:13One away and Gary Matthews the batter.
- 38:16Matthews also a fly ball to Mahias in right center in the first inning.
- 38:28A pitch down low ball.
- 38:31Matthews doing a great job for the Phils coming over from the Atlanta Braves.
- 38:40Swing and a miss by Gary and it's 1-1.
- 38:42Of course the player that went to the Braves, Bob Walke, was sent down to Richmond not too long ago.
- 38:50Fast ball high and inside.
- 38:52Two balls one strike.
- 38:55Mike Schmidt the on deck batter.
- 39:00A wind of 2-1.
- 39:02Swung on fly ball right field.
- 39:03Going back Collins he has room.
- 39:05Backpedaling stepping onto the learning track he has.
- 39:10Two down and here's Mike Schmidt.
- 39:12Mike went down swinging in the first inning.
- 39:18He pleads the league in home runs with 18. He has a 294 batting average and is driven in 47.
- 39:39Schmidt into the batter's box and Seaver to the plate.
- 39:43Swung on and foul off the shoulder of playdumpier Lee Weier.
- 40:04All one to count to Schmidt.
- 40:10Mike out of the batter's box now back in.
- 40:20The 0-1. Swung on and a high fly ball to the left.
- 40:24Dripping back Foster.
- 40:25He's at the edge of the warning track waiting now and has it.
- 40:29That's the inning and that one had a few of the folks booing it on here this evening.
- 40:35But a very high fly ball and thank goodness for that.
- 40:38So the fullies out in order in the fourth.
- 40:40That's well straight now for Tom Seaver in the middle of the fourth.
- 40:44The Reds nothing, the Phils nothing.
- 40:49It's good to be back here again. That's the ball game Cincinnati again. That's where my heart has always been. With the Cincinnati Reds playing baseball again.
- 41:11Baseball is like an old friend. The longer it's part of your life the more you like it.
- 41:16That's why so many people come out to see the Cincinnati Reds play. It feels good.
- 41:21The Marathon Oil Company loves baseball just like you do. And the Marathon Oil Company is proud to be here with the Cincinnati Reds.
- 41:32Oh you know it is.
- 41:39The Cincinnati Reds and the Marathon Oil Company. We got together to do it better and we did.
- 41:51Now scores the Reds batting the bottom half of the fourth. It'll be Dave Concepcion, George Foster and Danny Dreeson to play Steve Carlin.
- 41:59Steve has struck out one, has walked two and the Reds have had one hit and Carlin has committed a balk.
- 42:04That balk coming in the second inning when Foster at first base he balked, moving George to second and then Dreeson walked to put the first two on in the inning but no damage done.
- 42:17Concepcion struck out in the first to end the inning. He takes a strike from Carlin over the outside edge.
- 42:24Concepcion, Foster, Dreeson here in the fourth for the Reds. Carlin is 0-1. Davey takes the breaking pitch low on inside.
- 42:35Down evens 1-1.
- 42:441-1 delivery. Strike two called on the outside corner of the knees. Carlin in front of all two strikes to Concepcion.
- 42:58Throne hangs the sign and the 1-2 swung on and bounced foul at a breaking pitch.
- 43:16Hockfield straight away, again the 1-2, missing just off the plate with a fastball and it evens two balls, two strikes.
- 43:312-2 on the way and again he misses high and outside this time with a fastball, full count.
- 43:38Charlotte walked 35 and 113 innings coming into tonight's game. Here's the payout. Davey swings and lines at the left field.
- 43:47That's a base hit. Matthew plays it on the bounce so Davey gets things underway with a followed single to the left.
- 43:55Letting George Foster to play and then George as I said let off the second inning with a walk.
- 44:01That's the second hit of the game for the Reds. Foster hitting 3-10, 16 all-mounds, leads the league in RBIs with 57.
- 44:12George had three hits Sunday afternoon against the Giants, dove in a run and scored what provided to be the winning run.
- 44:24Foster takes low from Carlton the ball. Concepcion at first base, 1-0 to count to Foster.
- 44:39Carlton to the belt, he'll throw over to first and Concepcion steps back.
- 44:49Again the stretch and the pitch. Foster takes it high and outside, 2-0.
- 45:052-0 delivery, strike of the knees, 2-1.
- 45:16Steve Reddy delivers, Foster takes outside.
- 45:21Three balls, one strike and that pitch looked like Carlton tried to break the slider over the outside corner.
- 45:34Foster away from the plate now back in, Boone hangs the side.
- 45:39Carlton ready and delivers and Foster swings and fouls. Four count.
- 45:55Four count, we'll see what Davey does at first base, the stretch.
- 45:59He goes nowhere, there he goes, the pitch is taken, ball pulled on outside.
- 46:04And for the second time in the game, the first two of Leach for the Reds.
- 46:09Foster is single and now a walk to Concepcion, the third issued by Carlton.
- 46:14And here's Danny Dresen, Danny walked in the second inning.
- 46:25Dresen looking down to Russ Nixon, the Reds' third base coach.
- 46:31The first base is taken by Carlton. Dresen squares the bun, does first base side.
- 46:36Rose has it, looks at third and now they'll throw back to Carrillo and the sacrifice worked.
- 46:42Now Danny Dresen gets the job done, putting down a good sacrifice.
- 46:46Rose feeling the ball, he looked at third and then decided better and threw back to Carrillo to retire Dresen.
- 46:53He's gone away and Foster, or Concepcion at third base and Foster at second and the batter is Ray Knight.
- 47:07Ray in the second inning forced Foster at second base, a pitch, a check swing and a breaking ball that's low.
- 47:18Ray hitting.256, five home runs, 20 RBIs.
- 47:23The Reds with Concepcion at third, Foster at second.
- 47:27The right side of the Phillies infield plating in, the left side is back.
- 47:31Carrillo and Rose pulled in on the right side.
- 47:37Still working for the wind up, he delivers the 1-0 and Knight looks at a curve ball for Carl's strike and it evens 1-1.
- 47:50Now Ray Knight asks plate umpire Lee Weier to check the baseball out and he does and returns it to Carl.
- 48:18Stand the here, sliding on deck.
- 48:21The Reds with a chance to get on the board here, the pitch, Knight swings and chops it foul.
- 48:28Foul now in front of all two strikes.
- 48:31The Reds with a chance to get on the board here, the pitch, Knight swings and chops it foul.
- 48:38Foul now in front of all two strikes.
- 48:48And he started off with Concepcion aligning a single to left and then the walk to Foster, a sacrifice bunt by Dreeson.
- 48:57And the counterball, two strikes to Ray Knight.
- 49:09The wind, the pitch, Knight takes it inside, it evens 2-2.
- 49:21Mid and board deep at third and short, 3-0 and Rose in at second and first, the pitch.
- 49:27Knight swings and he fouls it away, a breaking ball.
- 49:31Count holding at two balls, two strikes.
- 49:46Right out of the batter's box and now steps back in.
- 50:00Foul to 2-2, Knight takes it low and inside, a breaking pitch and a full count now to Ray Knight.
- 50:15Foul on the pitch away from loading him up for Sam Mejias.
- 50:21Time call now as Bob Boone will walk to the mound and have a word with Carlton.
- 50:31Meeting breaks up and Bowen heads back to the plate.
- 50:40Three balls, two strikes.
- 50:45The winds and the payoff, Knight swings and chops it foul, another breaking pitch.
- 50:54Bowen hasn't thrown Knight a fastball yet.
- 51:06And steps the on third base, faster at second.
- 51:12Full count to Knight.
- 51:15And again the payoff.
- 51:18Fastball, drill foul into the seats over the Philadelphia dugout.
- 51:24Ray getting out in front on the...
- 51:41Ray into the count.
- 51:47And again the 3-2 pitch, swung on and that's foul, the pitch down and away.
- 52:02Knight again out of the batter's box and now steps back in.
- 52:15Carlton winds and delivers, Knight swings and fouls again.
- 52:27May ask for time, he wants the pine-tire rag from Sam Mejias on deck.
- 52:35Carlton throwing strikes and Knight following them away.
- 52:50Feds with the conception on the third, faster at second.
- 52:55Knight back into the batter's box.
- 53:01And the pitch, Knight swings and misses, got him with a breaking ball and that's out number two,
- 53:08the second strikeout for Steve Carlton and the batter will be Sam Mejias.
- 53:15Sam bounced into a 5-4-3 double play in the second inning.
- 53:29He has a 3-50 batting average and has done an excellent job pulling in for Ken Griffey.
- 53:43The pitch, swung on and missed, breaking pitch.
- 53:47That's that slider and he's got a good one.
- 53:57Carlton into the wide pitch, slider, swung on and shot foul and Carlton in front, 0-2 to Mejias.
- 54:13Moon hangs to the side, Carlton winds and delivers, fast ball misses, ball outside, 1-2.
- 54:31And the 1-2, swung on and that's foul back and out of play.
- 54:44Opfield playing with his straight away and not too deep.
- 54:481-2 pitch, swung on, popped up, foul off the first baseline, rolls over but that one's going to settle back into the seats.
- 55:00Carlton holding it, a ball, two strikes to Mejias.
- 55:13Foul shakes off a sign from Moon and the 1-2, swung on and missed.
- 55:19That's the slider bouncing away from Moon in front of the plate.
- 55:22Moon has it, throws the rose and that's the inning.
- 55:25So back-to-back strikeouts for Carlton.
- 55:27That's him out of trouble, the Reds no runs, he hits no errors, two runners left on base.
- 55:32And at the end of four, it's the Phil's nothing, the Reds nothing.

- 59:17Detroit has run off four straight wins.
- 59:19Toronto and Kansas City about to start.

- 59:42Here the Reds and the Phillies are scoreless.
- 59:47They're trying outside, one ball and one strike.
- 1:00:01Swung on, line drive, caught by Concepcion.
- 1:00:04Davy climbs a ladder to pick off.
- 1:00:06Ball is good for a base hit.
- 1:00:07Good play.
- 1:00:10No runs, no hits, and nobody left on.
- 1:00:13At the end of four and a half and a close encounter.
- 1:00:16The Reds and the Phillies, no score.
- 1:00:20Look who switched to natural light.
- 1:00:24And taste is why he switched.
- 1:00:27Look who switched to natural light.
- 1:00:32Taste is why he switched.
- 1:00:35Think Bonacanti, famous nameless linebacker, you switched to natural light?
- 1:00:39Sure, because natural light tastes like the others on the bench.
- 1:00:42Hey, aren't you, uh, uh...
- 1:00:43But I thought you drank that other light beer.
- 1:00:45Yeah, I play the options, but this is the one I like to huddle with.
- 1:00:48I know you, you're, uh...
- 1:00:50Norm Crosby, the comedian.
- 1:00:52No, you're not.
- 1:00:54Taste is why you're switched to natural light.
- 1:00:57Taste is why you're switched to natural light.
- 1:01:06Taste is why you're switched to natural light.
- 1:01:10Taste is why you're switched.
- 1:01:13Taste is why you're switched.
- 1:01:15And I was a Bush St. Louis.

- 1:01:56Mike let off the third and ground it out short to first.
- 1:02:01Swing and a foul. Wowee.
- 1:02:03We got to the ballpark tonight and found out that longtime Cincinnati Post baseball writer Earl Lawson has been hospitalized down in Nashville, Tennessee.
- 1:02:12And, well, Earl, very close to all of us. We hope he's doing well and we understand that hopefully he'll be coming back home to Cincinnati Thursday or Friday.
- 1:02:21Call strike and it's one and two, the count on Mike O'Berry.
- 1:02:25And missing in with a pitch Carlson.
- 1:02:28We hope Earl is resting comfortably and we'll be back on the beat very, very soon.
- 1:02:342-2 pitch.
- 1:02:36Check swing, it's just off the plate.
- 1:02:38Carlson has run the string out.
- 1:02:46Pay off delivery.
- 1:02:48Ground ball, slap foul between the coaching box and the bag at third base.
- 1:02:55Reggie had two hits off left-hander Carlson, a single by the man on deck, Tom Siever, and a base hit by Dave Concepcion.
- 1:03:03Here's a pop-up that'll be out of play back upstairs into the red seats.
- 1:03:14O'Berry batting 2-0-6, he's home at one time.
- 1:03:18Ground ball to third, Schmidt has it. Here's his throw to Rose, one out.
- 1:03:24There are more than 100 cities served by the Reds radio network, including Bristol, Tennessee, on WOPI,
- 1:03:30Wabash, Indiana, on WKUZ,
- 1:03:33Heinville, Kentucky, on WANO, and Springfield, Ohio, on WAZU.
- 1:03:42Siever with that hit to left in the third, he's one for one.
- 1:03:51Takes it down low, ball one.
- 1:03:54Tomorrow night, Bruce Borenny, Larry Christensen, a couple of right-handers in the 7.35 strike.
- 1:04:00Strike is called, the Reds will have another off day Thursday, and then we'll have the Mets coming in Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
- 1:04:06That'll wind up the homestand.
- 1:04:081-1 pitch.
- 1:04:10Breaking ball is low, two balls and a strike.
- 1:04:15Quick moving ball game tonight. Siever and Carlson hooked up on a good old good one.
- 1:04:20Strong on fly ball, right center field, Maddox on the run, slows to a trot and makes the catch.
- 1:04:27Two down.
- 1:04:32And now we go back up top for Dave Collins, who's 0 for 2.
- 1:04:39Collins is grounded a third and popped up.
- 1:04:42Now, 25 years ago today, the man who had three consecutive homers in one game at home for the first time in Reds history, Bob Thurman.
- 1:04:59Collins with two outs and the base is empty.
- 1:05:02Takes a strike at the letters.
- 1:05:04Carlson has struck out three, he's walked three.
- 1:05:08They've had two opportunities against him once in the second and a real good one in the fourth when they had runners in second and third with only one out.
- 1:05:17Strike two call.
- 1:05:19That's when Carlson did his thing after Ray Knight fouled off numerous pitches, ended up striking him out swinging and also struck out Sam Vahias.
- 1:05:29Collins in a two-strike hole as he settles back in and Carlson kicks and he fires, and the pitch is taken for strike three and that's the inning.
- 1:05:37He gets Collins on three pitches.
- 1:05:39The Reds are out on order for the first time since the opening inning and through five complete, nothing but zeros on the board.
- 1:05:45Cincinnati and Philadelphia, nothing, nothing.

- 1:06:45Man, Winslow?
- 1:06:49Joe Knoxau and yours truly, Marty Brennan, back at Riverfront Stadium as the Phillies come calling in the sixth inning.
- 1:06:55They'll do it with Bob Boone, Steve Carlton, and Pete Rose.
- 1:06:58Has retired 15 batters in a row.
- 1:07:03He was the same time throwing much better tonight than he did in his start out at Dodger Stadium last Wednesday night.
- 1:07:12It's the second good pitch game in a row the Reds have had from the starting staff.
- 1:07:17The effort that Mario Soto gave him on Sunday, getting up six hits in a run and six in a third.
- 1:07:23And now Siever threw five innings tonight.
- 1:07:26Happy birthday wishes go to the Reds turf superintendent, Luby Veale, who is celebrating one today.
- 1:07:35Good man.
- 1:07:37Bob Boone out on the flight of foster his first time up.
- 1:07:47Better in Philadelphia catcher waiting at the plate and Siever delivers and the pitchers bounce foul at the plate.
- 1:07:53Young man who plays a backup role to Bob Boone has really been swinging the bat of late Keith Morland.
- 1:08:02Boone considered to be the regular, but there are a lot of people who feel like it's just a matter of time before Morland takes over behind that plate for the Phillies.
- 1:08:12Strike two is called.
- 1:08:18After this home stand, the Reds will be in Montreal beginning next Monday night.
- 1:08:23Low for a ball.
- 1:08:29I'll make that next Tuesday night. We'll wrap up the home stand here next Monday against the Mets.
- 1:08:34Two balls and two strikes play the Expos at Olympic Stadium Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights and then be in New York over that following weekend for a three game series.
- 1:08:45Ground ball foul off third. That'll carry over to the Philadelphia dugout.
- 1:08:55I was mentioning the fact that the Indianapolis club dropped a one run decision last night to Springfield.
- 1:09:01Bill Bonham, as we mentioned, Sunday was scheduled to start. He could not go because of arm problems, which is not good news to report.
- 1:09:11Jose Brito was rushed into the starting role when Bonham was unable to take his turn and Brito went one third of an inning.
- 1:09:21Full count on Bob Boone.
- 1:09:24Seaver was out ahead of him, but now has three balls and two strikes.
- 1:09:30And the right hander deals a payoff pitch and he pops him up.
- 1:09:34The first baseline and waiting is O'Berry. Now Dreesen comes into the picture and Danny makes the catch and foul territory.
- 1:09:44Carlton a strikeout victim in the third inning.
- 1:09:47Next Monday night will be cost cutter night here at Riverfront when the Reds take on the Mets.
- 1:09:51It'll also be a senior citizens day. Veteran Reds fans, 65 and older, may purchase $5 reserve seats for only $2.
- 1:09:58That's next Monday evening on senior citizens night and cost cutter night.
- 1:10:04One down. Pitcher against pitcher in a scoreless game in the sixth and Carlton takes a fastball in for a strike.
- 1:10:17Swing and a miss on a pitcher way. Strike two.
- 1:10:20Talking about the way the Reds had handled the Phillies over the years in this ballpark since 1970. The Phillies had won 20 and lost 47 here.
- 1:10:28That's a ball. Their only winning season here was in 1970 when they won four of the six games played.
- 1:10:37Two balls, two strikes. They were three and three and 73 and again in the 76, their worst years. 0 and 6 in both 1975 and 1977.
- 1:10:47Three balls and two strikes. And they only won one of five and one of six in 72 and again in 1980.
- 1:10:56Carlton gets a walk.
- 1:11:00Sieber getting out in front of Steve but ending up walking him.
- 1:11:06So 16 in a row that Sieber set down before issuing the walk to Carlton and now goes against the only man who's got a hit off of him and that's Rose.
- 1:11:16Pete single to center in the first, grounded to Oster in the third.
- 1:11:24Pete playing in his 416th consecutive game tonight. He had the final 28 with the Reds back in 1978 and has played in every game since going over to the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:11:35Swing and a hot bat is hit safely at 19 on a 21 game batting 372 during that time. Carlton goes to pitch a half swing foul.
- 1:11:45Carlton was jogging on down to second base as the pitch came play with Rose fouled it off.
- 1:11:51This season, Pete has had 18 two hit games and eight three hit games.
- 1:11:57Of course, at the all time National League career hit record a week ago.
- 1:12:02Last night when he had a base hit the eighth inning off of Cardinal right-handed Mark Lattell.
- 1:12:10Rose fouls this one up and out of here and Pete's behind on two.
- 1:12:17Batting 327.
- 1:12:20Homer was on the season. He's driven in 20 runs right now. Concepcion in behind him now to talk with Sieber.
- 1:12:26Pete had a fine opening game here. He went three for five off for his pitching despite the Cincinnati victory.
- 1:12:39Carlton at first one out.
- 1:12:43And the 0-2 pitch popped up but that'll carry well back into the seats off the third baseline.
- 1:12:57Talking with Pete on our pregame show tonight. I don't know that I don't know of a player who worked any harder during the strike to
- 1:13:04stay prepared to get going again and this man did not surprising strike three call.
- 1:13:09They were got him watching and he did not like the call.
- 1:13:12He says something to Lee wire and still talking to him as he goes back to the Phillies dugout.
- 1:13:21Number five for Tom and here is second baseman Manny Trio.
- 1:13:31Pete still jawing as he stands in front of the bat rack.
- 1:13:39Trio grounds at the second base at the inning.
- 1:13:41Oster on to Dreeson.
- 1:13:43Phillies are gone. No runs. No hits. One left.
- 1:13:47In the middle of the sixth inning at Riverfront Cincinnati nothing and Philadelphia nothing.
- 1:13:53I've been hearing the folks all over Ohio are winning up a storm and the lottery is instant game.
- 1:13:58And that's exactly what Ohioans are doing every day.
- 1:14:01Winning thousands of prizes and not just little ones either.
- 1:14:04Word is there's been lots of ten thousand dollar winners.
- 1:14:07Who knows that's why we striking at rich.
- 1:14:10The best part is there's still thousands of prizes left including some of them big ten thousand dollar ones.
- 1:14:15Gotta get going now and get me an Ohioans to lottery ticket.
- 1:14:19Who's I can strike at rich?
- 1:14:20Winning tickets must be validated.

- 1:14:52How would you like someone to turn you loose on a shopping spree at your neighborhood Kroger's store?
- 1:14:58Well that's exactly what the Reds will do if you're the big winner on Cost Cutter Night.
- 1:15:01The exciting special date coming up next Monday evening when the Reds meet the Mets here.
- 1:15:05One lucky fan will win the opportunity to go on a three minute shopping spree.
- 1:15:09There'll be lots of other fun things on Cost Cutter Night too.
- 1:15:12More than twelve thousand dollars in groceries will be given away to over two hundred winners.
- 1:15:16And those delicious Conn's hot dogs will be priced at just a quarter at Stadium Concession stands that night.
- 1:15:21Don't miss out, be on hand for Cost Cutter Night at Riverfront Stadium or send a postcard before the August 24th drawing date.
- 1:15:28The Reds Cost Cutter Night Riverfront Stadium Cincinnati.
- 1:15:30Last year's free winner by the way, picked up a cool fifteen hundred dollars in groceries in three minutes.
- 1:15:38That's a bunch.
- 1:15:41Ronnie Oster in the bottom of the sixth and Carlton misses high for a ball.
- 1:15:45Joe we were talking about during the commercial break.
- 1:15:47What percentage of break in ball, sliders or curves do you think Carlton has thrown?
- 1:15:50You'd have to say seventy seventy five percent, maybe even more than that.
- 1:15:56He throws a breaking pitch to Oster and he swings and he misses one and one.
- 1:16:06Ronnie has popped up and reached on a fielder's choice.
- 1:16:10Swing and a foul.
- 1:16:18This game now about an hour and fifteen minutes old and we're already in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:16:26Oster takes it downstairs, two balls two strikes.
- 1:16:32Not too often really in the course of the season that you have two of the great ones like these two guys getting together on the same night.
- 1:16:38Oster checks his swing, fits just down low and Carlton is three and two with a red second baseman.
- 1:16:48Lefty fires and Oster swings and hits it hard but to center field and Maddox quickly back to Hall of Inns.
- 1:16:59Dave Concepcion has one of the two reds hits, he's single to left field in the fourth inning.
- 1:17:05Hardly accepting for the two base hits, that's only the second put out to the outfield.
- 1:17:12Exactly right, Sieber fly to center in the last inning.
- 1:17:17And now this fly ball off the bat of Ronnie Oster so that's a good sign.
- 1:17:24Dave he takes it at the knees, strike one call.
- 1:17:30No score, Reds have had the two opportunities but were unable to catch him so Philadelphia has not had a scoring threat.
- 1:17:40Line drive, center field, a little fall in front of Maddox base hit number two for Dave Concepcion.
- 1:17:51George Foster two times up in the game and both times he has drawn walks.
- 1:17:58Carlton showing a bit of respect for this man and well he should.
- 1:18:03Walk in the second, a walk in the fourth.
- 1:18:07John McNamara standing a couple of steps down on the stairwell, Reds dug out.
- 1:18:16One out base hit by Concepcion, Foster slowly settles into the batter's box, the outfield deep and plain him to pull.
- 1:18:22There's a throw to first, Davey back.
- 1:18:35To the plate, swung on and a hit to left.
- 1:18:41Concepcion to second as the Reds come up with back to back one out base hit.
- 1:18:49Danny Dreesen is without an official at bat, he's drawn a base on balls and has put down a sacrifice run.
- 1:18:56Now the ceremonial first pitch here tonight was delivered by 13 year old Tanya Schlegel of Hamilton.
- 1:19:04Dreesen fouls it away and as we mentioned on our post game show Sunday, Tanya the winner of the All-American Sobox Derby Senior Division in Akron, Ohio over the weekend.
- 1:19:15I want to congratulate that young lady again.
- 1:19:19One ball and a strike on Dreesen.
- 1:19:26Concepcion at second, Foster at first, one out.
- 1:19:29Carlton with a 1-1 and Dreesen takes breaking ball, two balls and a strike.
- 1:19:41Here's a pause and a pitch, there's strike two called.
- 1:19:48Carlton even on Dreesen, 2-2.
- 1:19:56And that one a bouncer up there that Bob Boone plays on the Hoppenly, wow, we'll take a look see at that baseball and give it back to Carlton.
- 1:20:02Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:20:05Let's see what John McNamara has in store here for Concepcion and George Foster, one out, three and two on the left handed batter.
- 1:20:13Pay off pitch, the runner is sold and ball for their Lotus.
- 1:20:21So scoring opportunity number three for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:20:26Let's see if they can cash in this time.
- 1:20:28Carlton has walked his fourth.
- 1:20:32Gray Knight, I'm sure would love to be able to deliver a big blow here because it involved into quite a one-on-one battle between he and Carlton back in the fourth inning.
- 1:20:41Knight fouled off a whole bunch of pitches and Carlton finally struck him out with a low breaking ball.
- 1:20:47Concepcion, third, Foster second, Dreesen fills it up at first.
- 1:20:51The Reds have him loaded with only one away in a scoreless game in the sixth inning.
- 1:21:01Now starting to get revved up here is Knight who takes a lot of time getting into the batter's box this time around against a man who likes to work quickly.
- 1:21:11At times that can upset the rhythm of a pitcher.
- 1:21:13Carlton working, Knight swinging and fouling and I think Ray swung and fouled that ball off of his right leg.
- 1:21:26He'll take a throw back behind Bob Boone and Lee Weier to walk the hurt out a little bit.
- 1:21:47Now he'll play a Knight straight away, slowly gets back into the batter's box. Carlton who never changes expression on the mound.
- 1:21:56Deals the one strike to it.
- 1:21:58Slung out of the base and into left field.
- 1:22:00Into score comes Concepcion.
- 1:22:02They'll hold Foster at third.
- 1:22:04The bases remain loaded and Ray Knight with a line drive hits a left and it's 1-0 Cincinnati.
- 1:22:15A four in a row reach after Oster fly to center on a well hit ball to begin the inning.
- 1:22:21And that run producing single by the Reds third baseman who's going to get the Philadelphia Bullpen active for the first time tonight.
- 1:22:29Left hander Sparky Lyle will go down to start throwing.
- 1:22:35Here's Samba he is. He's grounded into a double play and has struck out.
- 1:22:40He swings and hits one into left center field. Gary Mattocks will make the catcher Gary Mattocks cut in front of Matthews to haul it in.
- 1:22:48Foster tags and scores and it's 2-0.
- 1:22:57Gary Mattoos must be wondering what happened. He was all set to make the play and Mattocks who has a better throwing arm of the two cut in front of him to make the play but really had no chance at all of anything.
- 1:23:09In terms of throwing anybody out so get it. He has to sacrifice fly and bring up Michael Berry. He grounds one to second.
- 1:23:16Manny Trio will make his play to first and that ends the inning. But the Reds in the sixth inning get two runs on three hits.
- 1:23:23No errors and one man left on. Two men left on base and at the end of sixth it's the Reds two and the Phillies nothing.
- 1:23:32Here goes. Yeah when there's a game on the radio that's when you got to make sure there's plenty of ice cold Buds right close by.
- 1:23:43This Buds for you is something for all you do. The king of fear is on his earth. Yeah just for you.
- 1:23:50That distinctively clean crisp taste that says Buds Lizer. For all you do.
- 1:23:56This Buds for you. Anheuser-Busch St. Louis. This is Jerry Lewis here with Ed McMahon and Norm Crosby to remind you that it's time for this year's Muscular Dystrophy Fund Drive.
- 1:24:08And Anheuser-Busch wants to help again by making a contribution of one million dollars based on the sale of Budweiser and Natural Light during the month of August.
- 1:24:17These contributions will go to help fund research, treatment and medical services.
- 1:24:22So look for our display at your local store and procure some Budweiser or Natural Light and help Jerry help his kids.
- 1:24:29Anheuser-Busch St. Louis.
- 1:24:33We'll pause now for station identification on the Cincinnati Reds baseball network.
- 1:24:38Bud. So why do we call Jim Sager the Beast of Baltimore?
- 1:24:42Well you can draw your own conclusions each and every weekday evening from 6 until midnight here at K95.
- 1:24:47It's the Jim Sager Show. The Beast of Baltimore at K95. WHOKFM Lancaster.
- 1:24:54Reds 2, Phillies nothing. Seventh inning. And it's Gary Matthews to start things off for Dallas Green's club. Here's Joe.
- 1:25:01All right Marty. Matthews 0 for 2 has hit a fly ball to left center, to right center rather.
- 1:25:06To Sam Mahias and a fly ball to the right to Dave Collins and his two times up.
- 1:25:12Reds leading 2 to nothing. The pitch and Matthews swings and fouls it off to the right and back into the seat.
- 1:25:22Talking about birthdays, I want to wish a happy birthday to my oldest son, Phillip.
- 1:25:29Blueby's field is a great day. Blueby. Why don't I want to count?
- 1:25:44Beaver down behind the mound rubbing up the baseball. Reds scoring two times in the sixth inning.
- 1:25:52Leading it 2 to nothing. Beavers 1-1 delivery. That ball swung on and the fly ball center to you.
- 1:26:01Mahias waiting on it, moving in a few steps now. He has it. Go away.
- 1:26:14One down and the batter is Mike Schmidt. Mike, all for two, struck out in the first and a high fly ball to Foster and Luff in the fourth.
- 1:26:31Now the Giants leading Pittsburgh 4-1 in the fifth inning at Pittsburgh. Pitch to Schmidt high and inside and that hits Mike right in the middle of the back.
- 1:26:45Schmidt moves on to first base being hit by the pitch and that'll bring up Bates McBride.
- 1:26:56Looks like a change up that Schmidt got hit with.
- 1:27:02At the Indianapolis tonight, Springfield leading 2 to nothing after one inning.
- 1:27:08Still Dolly on the mound for the Indians. The pitch to McBride. He swings and fouls straight back.
- 1:27:17Bates go for two. Popped out tonight and foul territory and it struck out and he's two times up.
- 1:27:28Smithic first base with one away. He resets and delivers and McBride takes low on outside and evens one and one.
- 1:27:47One one on the way. Swung on in the fly ball center field. He is coasting in. He's there waiting and he has it two out.
- 1:28:05Two down and Gary Maddux steps in. Gary both times as fly balls to Collins in the right and he hit the ball hard both times up.
- 1:28:21He resets and delivers and it swung on and hit off the fifth.
- 1:28:25Then Davey Concepcion misjudged the ball. He charged in and the ball hung up and went over Davey's head and he stayed in his position.
- 1:28:35Probably would have caught it head high but Davey charged in on it and then leaped for it and couldn't get to it.
- 1:28:41So Mike Schmidt all the way around the third. Second hit of the game for facilities in the batter is Larry Ball.
- 1:28:52He's really getting jammed on the pitch. Concepcion started in on it and well as we said he misjudged it.
- 1:29:02Sparky Lyle starts throwing and they pull it off your bullpen. The pitch to Boyd. Larry swings and fouls it off the mid of Michael Berry.
- 1:29:25On his first and third two out. The 0-1. Boa swings and fly ball left field. Foster there waiting and he has it left field.
- 1:29:35Collins in the seventh. No one's hit. No one's left on base and in the middle of the seventh it's the red two and the Phil's coming.
- 1:29:43Let's say you're just driving along in your car and you hear a knock. On the window? No, from your engine. Oh you mean that pan sound? Right.
- 1:29:50If you hear it while your car is accelerating or starting up that's okay. The game continues at the beginning of side three.
- 1:30:20If you hear it while your car is accelerating or starting up that's okay. But if you hear it while you're just cruising along it could be telling you something.
- 1:30:31Okay what's it telling me? That carbon buildups are clinging to your car's engine. It's not working as efficiently as it should and you need a better gasoline.
- 1:30:38Oh. So now let's say you're driving by a Marathon service station. What a coincidence. You pull in and ask for a new Super M lead free.
- 1:30:45Marathon's premium gasoline with Marathon's new special additive. The one designed to keep your engine cleaner. Oh and a cleaner engine can give me better fuel economy.
- 1:30:54Right. Your car can drive better, be less likely to omit pollutants, and because the engine will be kept in better shape probably need less maintenance.
- 1:31:01Pretty impressive. Just ask your Marathon man about it. He's there to help you because he still believes in that good old fashioned concept of full service and a better product.
- 1:31:10Like Super M lead free. Right. Marathon with the long distance gasoline. Best in the long run.
- 1:31:17For the Reds in the bottom half of the seventh inning Tom Siever will lead it out followed by Dave Collins and Ron Oster.
- 1:31:27Tom Siever has pitched quite a baseball game here tonight. He allowed the Phillies for two hits.
- 1:31:35Oh, it's Pete Rose who led off the game with a single to center and then the misjudged stop liner off the bat of Gary Maddux in the seventh inning.
- 1:31:46So Siever gets a nice hand as he makes his way to the plate.
- 1:31:56Now after two innings out of Indianapolis it's two to one Springfield. Siever takes high from Carlton the ball.
- 1:32:03Siever has walked for the rest of that five hits and they lead it two to nothing.
- 1:32:09A one-oh. Siever swings in a foul out of the middle of Boone. Not evens one to one.
- 1:32:27One-one pitch. Slider misses inside. Two-alls a strike.
- 1:32:36Carlton's two-one delivery. Tom looks at strike two, another slider. And it evens two and two.
- 1:32:43New York leading Atlanta two to nothing. Fifth inning at Atlanta.
- 1:32:48Siever swings and doesn't get it. And that's strikeout number five for Steve Carlton.
- 1:32:57And the batter is Dave Collin.
- 1:33:02Collin's 0 for three, has gone to the third, popped the second, and called out on strikes.
- 1:33:15Outfield playing Collin's shallow and about straight away.
- 1:33:21The pitch, maybe it takes high and outside of ball.
- 1:33:31Carlton back to the play. Collin looks at a strike on the inside edge, belt high. One-on-one.
- 1:33:47A one-one delivery. That's just inside. Two balls to strike.
- 1:34:02Carlton's two-one on the way. Fung on and bounced to three-oh second.
- 1:34:07And he charges, has it, quick throwing the rows, two out.
- 1:34:16Two away, and here's Ron Oster. Ron, 0 for three, is last time up, lined to Maddox and center field.
- 1:34:29Carlton to the plate, and he misses high and outside. One-on-one.
- 1:34:39One-oh pitch. Take swing and a strike call. One-on-one.
- 1:34:44Ron Reed starts throwing, and the Philadelphia Bullpen are right-handed.
- 1:34:52Wind the one-one, fung on and fouled, and that went into the broadcast booth to our right.
- 1:35:04On account of all two strikes, and here comes Carlton. Oster takes inside a breaking pitch, two-and-two.
- 1:35:17And the two-two. Fung on and grounded in the hole in the right field of base hit.
- 1:35:23Ron Oster reaches out and punches it into right. That's hit number six for the Reds, and Dave Concepcion to the plate.
- 1:35:35Maybe two for three after striking out in the first inning. He's singled to left in the fourth,
- 1:35:41and then got the two-run sixth on the way with a single to center.
- 1:35:55Carlton ready, and he'll throw over the first, and Oster steps back.
- 1:36:04The O-one, the team outside, one-on-one.
- 1:36:11The Reds, scoring two times in the sixth, they lead it two to nothing.
- 1:36:19Mitch on the way, swung on, ground ball, Schmidt off to his left a couple of steps, goes on to three-oh.
- 1:36:25They force Oster, and that's the inning. The Reds, no runs, they hit, no errors.
- 1:36:29Runner left on, and at the end of seven, it's the Reds two and the Thills nothing.
- 1:36:35Hi, this is Bob Braun for Borden Dairy.
- 1:36:37Well, the race is on, and the Cincinnati Reds are playing baseball again,
- 1:36:40and you can celebrate by enjoying something that's brand new from Borden Dairy.
- 1:36:45It's red vanilla ice cream. Cincinnati Red, that is. It looks delicious, and it tastes great.
- 1:36:51And your family and friends will really enjoy it.
- 1:36:53It kind of fools them a little bit because vanilla ice cream is white, right? Wrong.
- 1:36:58Vanilla ice cream is red. Cincinnati Red, that is, from Borden Dairy.
- 1:37:02You'll find it in the dessert section at the frozen food department at your favorite supermarket.
- 1:37:07Look for it and enjoy, and then rally around those Reds as they resume the penned race for 1981.
- 1:37:13Yes, the race is on, and Borden Dairy's L.C. says, come on, pour it on, Reds,
- 1:37:19and enjoy Cincinnati Red vanilla ice cream from Borden.
- 1:37:23Let them all together make the L.C. a word that means the world to us.
- 1:37:31Seven-inning total show the Phil's no runs, two hits, no errors.
- 1:37:40The Reds two runs, six hits, and no errors.
- 1:37:43Forth Philadelphia, Bob Boone will lead it off.
- 1:37:45We have activity in the Cincinnati bullpen. Tommy Hume and Joe Price both throwing,
- 1:37:50and it looks like Del Unser on deck to hit for,
- 1:37:57in fact, Greg Gross on deck to hit for Steve Carl.
- 1:38:01They're ready to go on the eighth. Here's Marty.
- 1:38:03Bob Boone, 0 for 2 tonight. Tom Siever working with a two-run lead.
- 1:38:07As limited the Phillies as Joe pointed out to two hits, a single and a first by Rose,
- 1:38:11and the ball that Maddox hit in the last inning that appeared to be misplayed by Concepcion,
- 1:38:16maybe misjudging the ball, allowing it to get over his head.
- 1:38:20Siever into the plate, and Boone takes it down on away ball one.
- 1:38:23Tommy Hume, Joe Price, a right-hander and a left-hander getting ready.
- 1:38:32Swung on on a ground ball to third. Ray Knight has a chest tie
- 1:38:35and brings it on to Danny Dreesen, one out.
- 1:38:40Greg Gross, a left-handed batter, will pinch hit for Steve Carlton.
- 1:38:45Carlton again has the type of ball game that he has had so many times in the past against the Reds,
- 1:38:51pitching well enough on most other nights to come up with a victory,
- 1:38:55but giving up six hits and two runs in seven innings, struck out five and walked four,
- 1:39:01and he'll turn it over to Ron Reed now with a pinch hitter Gross coming on here with one out.
- 1:39:05Greg batting 269, no home runs, five RBI, 22 times up as a pinch hitter.
- 1:39:10He's delivered four base hits.
- 1:39:18Siever delivers and the pitch is high, ball one.
- 1:39:21We've got a final in from the American League.
- 1:39:23In the first of the twin bill in Arlington, Texas, Milwaukee defeats the Rangers three to one.
- 1:39:30Call strike.
- 1:39:31So the Brewers continue to play good baseball here in the season's second half.
- 1:39:36The Brewers are leading the American League East and now with a record of seven wins and three losses,
- 1:39:40Detroit has to win tonight in order to stay a half a game back.
- 1:39:43Hoss got the win.
- 1:39:44Matlock took the loss and fingers, finished to get his 16th save.
- 1:39:50Fouled off third and out of play.
- 1:39:56After three, the Yanks lead the White Sox one-nothing.
- 1:39:59Three and a half innings have gone by in Detroit, no score between the Tigers and the Twins.
- 1:40:03Kansas City one-nothing over Toronto after one.
- 1:40:07There are all the scores of all the games going on right now in the American League.
- 1:40:12One ball and two strikes on pinch hitter Gross and another foul out of here.
- 1:40:16In the bottom of the fifth at Pittsburgh, Giants four, Pirates one.
- 1:40:21San Francisco broke a 1-1 tie by scoring three times in the fourth inning off Teon.
- 1:40:26And it's still two-nothing Mets over the Braves after four and a half in Atlanta.
- 1:40:30San Diego nothing, Cardinals nothing after one and a half.
- 1:40:34Gross with a high fly ball into straightaway center field, shallow, and Mejias has it two-gone.
- 1:40:45Pete Rose is one for three, a single, a ground-out and a strike-out.
- 1:40:49Finally in the National League, the Astros have an early two-nothing lead over Montreal.
- 1:40:53That's in the third inning.
- 1:40:59Seaver has retired the Phillies in order four times, innings two, three, four, and five,
- 1:41:04and trying to do it here in the eighth, leading two to nothing.
- 1:41:09Rose watches a pitch sale outside.
- 1:41:19Check swing. He didn't go far enough, all two.
- 1:41:22Pete is second in the league in batting with that 325 batting average.
- 1:41:25That's where it was at game time and that's where it is right now.
- 1:41:28Andre Dawson of Montreal had a one-point advantage over Rose.
- 1:41:33High ball three.
- 1:41:43Seaver needs a strike and he gets it.
- 1:41:46Tom has already gone farther than any of the Red Starters so far here in the second half.
- 1:41:55And that's ball four inside so Rose flips the bat away and Pete becomes Seaver's second walk of the night.
- 1:42:00The bat will be Trio.
- 1:42:03Previous to this distance by Seaver tonight, the longest that a Red Starter has gone was Sunday afternoon when Soto went six and a third.
- 1:42:14Seaver has now pitched seven in two-thirds innings.
- 1:42:17Trio has flied to center, struck out, and grounded out to Oster.
- 1:42:27Pitch inside, ball one.
- 1:42:41Checking the pitch. Swung on line, drive over second into right center field.
- 1:42:45And that falls for a hit. Rose takes a short turn at second base and he'll hole right there.
- 1:42:50So a two-odd walk to Rose and a base hit by Manny Trio.
- 1:42:55And the Phillies just like that have the tying runs aboard for left fielder Gary Matthews.
- 1:43:00And here comes manager John McNamara and that may well be it for Tom Seaver.
- 1:43:04Marty, I'm sure what Mack will ask, there's no question about it.
- 1:43:08He's going to find out how Tom feels and Tom's always honest with the skipper
- 1:43:13that will tell him exactly how he feels.
- 1:43:16If he feels that he's tired and he thinks there should be a change, we'll see a change.
- 1:43:23But I'm quite sure that Mack did not go out there with the intention of taking Tom Seaver out of the ball game.
- 1:43:30Well, the meeting continues on the mound. Mack out there, arms crossed.
- 1:43:33And right now I'd say he's going to leave him in there.
- 1:43:36And that's exactly what he's going to do.
- 1:43:39Just as Lee Weier gets to the mound, Mack turns and drops on back to the dugout
- 1:43:43and Seaver will stay on to pitch to Gary Matthews.
- 1:43:48Matthews hit the ball very well back in the fourth inning.
- 1:43:50He sent Collins about a step or two onto the warning track and right center.
- 1:43:53In fact, all three times up tonight he's hit fly ball to the outfield, twice to Mejias and the other to Collins.
- 1:43:59Rose second, Trio first, two out.
- 1:44:02Matthews right out over top of the plate and he takes it low for a ball.
- 1:44:13Checking the lead runner, the pitch, swing and a foul at the plate.
- 1:44:25Even though Mack let him in, I would think Seaver has this batter right here.
- 1:44:31And that's a good shot by Schmidt on deck.
- 1:44:34And the 1-1 coming to Matthews and that bounces up there, gets away from O'Berry and both runners advance.
- 1:44:41Rose to third, Trio to second. Seaver throws a very inopportune wild pitch.
- 1:44:49So rather than the Phillies needing a possible extra base hit to tie it up,
- 1:44:53now with a wild pitch a single could deadlock the score.
- 1:45:00And Gary Matthews.
- 1:45:08Time will now work from the line up.
- 1:45:10And here it comes, Matthews takes high, ball three.
- 1:45:20Down turns around, takes a look at the scoreboard.
- 1:45:23Now directions attention is back to the plate.
- 1:45:25O'Berry hangs his side.
- 1:45:27That's ball four, the bases are loaded.
- 1:45:34Now Seaver has walked a batter, has given up a base hit, has thrown a wild pitch,
- 1:45:38and has now walked another one and faces Mike Schmidt.
- 1:45:44Schmidt is struck out, fly to deep left, and in the last inning Seaver hit him with a pitch.
- 1:45:56Tom Seaver here in the eighth, faced with adversity leading by two runs,
- 1:46:01but the Phillies after the first two batters, Boone on the ground out to third,
- 1:46:04Gross on the fly to center, they have loaded them up.
- 1:46:11Outfield deep, Seaver rocks, kicks, and fires, and Schmidt takes the ball.
- 1:46:20Tom almost in total control until this inning,
- 1:46:22although the Phillies left runners at first and third in the seventh.
- 1:46:29Back with a 1-0 pitch, and Schmidt swings and slaps this one into the Philadelphia dugout.
- 1:46:33One ball, one strike.
- 1:46:38Rose, Trio, and Matthews are the Philadelphia base runners at third, second, and first,
- 1:46:42as Human Price continue to throw in the Red Bull pen.
- 1:46:46Cincinnati will be hitting off of Ron Reed in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:46:51Schmidt pounds ahead of the bat on the plate now, waiting with a cock to 1-1 to him,
- 1:46:55and this one fouled back and just off to our left, bangs the auxiliary scoreboard and bounces back downstairs.
- 1:47:13One ball, two strikes.
- 1:47:17Schmidt waving it around, runners leading at every base with two outs, Seaver, Deal,
- 1:47:22Schmidt swings, and this one's back upstairs.
- 1:47:26And a man who hit the home run that wrapped things up for the National League in the All-Star game.
- 1:47:40Trying to deliver right here just a nice, polite single to get his ball club even.
- 1:47:47They count holding at a ball, two strikes.
- 1:47:49Seaver with a motion. He kicks and fires.
- 1:47:51Schmidt breaks his bat and bounces to the mound.
- 1:47:53On to Greason. We're out of the inning.
- 1:47:56Tom bounces back as he got in on Schmidt, and he hits a nice bouncer right back to the mound.
- 1:48:04No run. One hit. Three left.
- 1:48:07After seven and a half, the Reds 2 and the Phillies nothing.
- 1:48:37This bat's for you. For all you do.
- 1:48:53The king of the year, this guy and that.
- 1:49:01For all you do.
- 1:49:06This bat's for you.
- 1:49:08Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis.
- 1:49:12And this bat's for you. Day or night, anytime is the right time to enjoy the clean, crisp taste, that says Budweiser.
- 1:49:19Now we've got a new pitcher on the mound, right-hander Ron Reed.
- 1:49:22You're right. Joe will take a look at his numbers.
- 1:49:25So it's the other side, doesn't he, huh?
- 1:49:26Yeah.
- 1:49:27I didn't notice that.
- 1:49:28Joe do.
- 1:49:29Okay. So, Ron Reed.
- 1:49:31Well, Ron is making his 20th appearance of the year, Marty, and he's won two of our son
- 1:49:35with a fine 291 earned run average in 34 innings he's allowed, but 26 hits has locked in and has struck out 20,
- 1:49:42and he'll be facing George Foster leading it off here in the eighth for the Reds.
- 1:49:47Got another change also.
- 1:49:48Greg Gross, who pinch hit in the top of the inning, stays in the game to play Latvia.
- 1:49:52He, of course, bats in that ninth spot, and the newcomer Reed to the mound will be hitting in the number three position,
- 1:49:57formerly held by Matthews.
- 1:50:01Two-nothing Cincinnati, George Foster leading off the bottom of the eighth inning has been on three straight times tonight,
- 1:50:07two walks and a single.
- 1:50:12He's been on seven straight times over the last two games, and Reed misses with the first pitch of ball.
- 1:50:18Sunday Foster single, walk, double, and single again.
- 1:50:21Tonight he has walked, walked, and single, and scored a run.
- 1:50:25Strike to him on the outside, one and one.
- 1:50:34That one bounces up there, two balls and a strike. Attendance tonight, 25,363.
- 1:50:4125,363.
- 1:50:49Reed pitches and Foster swings and grounds it into center field. He's got another hit.
- 1:50:54That is eight times in a row he's been on base.
- 1:51:02Base hit number seven for Cincinnati. It brings up Danny Drees and Danny without an official adbat,
- 1:51:07has walked, sacrificed, and walked again.
- 1:51:16Ron Reed, greeted by a ground single to center. Dreeson looks at a strike.
- 1:51:23Reds put three of their seven hits together in the sixth inning along with a base on balls
- 1:51:27and a sacrifice fly to get two runs in.
- 1:51:32One ball and a strike on Danny.
- 1:51:42Dreeson levels it back, pitching Reed, taking Dreeson, low on inside, two balls and one strike.
- 1:51:52Over the years, the Reds have had more than their share of success against Ron Reed.
- 1:52:00Foster going, pitcher swung out and foul. Bob Boone came out of the crowd to throw,
- 1:52:04but the ball, Dreeson just got a piece of the ball and bounded away from Boone.
- 1:52:10Think about one single effort the Reds had off this veteran right hander.
- 1:52:13It was, of course, in the third and as things turned out, the final game of the 76 playoffs
- 1:52:18when the Reds came to the ninth inning trailing by two runs.
- 1:52:23That pitch is high and it's a full count.
- 1:52:26Reds had back-to-back home runs off Reed, Foster and Bench and later, of course, scored the winning run
- 1:52:35off of left-hander Tom Underwood. Foster going, and Dreeson bounces this one past third and a foul ball.
- 1:52:42Boy, it was close. That ball took a big bounce by Schmidt,
- 1:52:45and it looked very, very close to being a fair ball.
- 1:52:49And Russ Nixon now questioning Ed Montague's foul call.
- 1:52:53You can't get much closer than that, I'll tell you.
- 1:52:56Russ going up the line behind third base to say something to Montague
- 1:52:59because I guarantee Russ thought that ball got some white.
- 1:53:08Nixon not smiling as he walks back to the third base coaching box.
- 1:53:16Holding full on Danny Dreeson.
- 1:53:22Foster going, swinging another foul by Dan.
- 1:53:43Reed with a pause and a pitch. Foster takes off.
- 1:53:46Ground ball slapped to the left side. Boa has it.
- 1:53:48He'll make his play to first as Foster goes to second.
- 1:53:51He was running on a pitch, and Dreeson grounds out short to first.
- 1:53:57That brings up Ray Knight, and right now he has a game-winning RBI
- 1:54:01with that bases-loaded single in the sixth inning to knock in a run.
- 1:54:17He's gone out, a runner at second.
- 1:54:21That would not be opposed to getting another run in before the Phillies bat in the ninth.
- 1:54:24And Knight drives one into right field, base hit.
- 1:54:26McBride charges, and he'll have to hold Foster at third.
- 1:54:29Ray hit that ball so hard that George did not have any chance at all
- 1:54:33of scoring from second base.
- 1:54:39So Ray Knight has his second hit of the night,
- 1:54:41and the runners are threatening here in the eighth inning off Ron Reed.
- 1:54:45We'll pause for station identification on the Cincinnati Reds baseball network.
- 1:54:52Third-shift workers, insomniacs, and just generally off-the-wall people
- 1:54:56will want to spend the night with the Spaceman from midnight until six here at K-95.
- 1:55:00Great kick in country music and irrational behavior, the Spaceman at K-95,
- 1:55:04WHOKFM, Lancaster.
- 1:55:07Sparky Lyle has started to throw in the Philadelphia bullpen,
- 1:55:09with the Reds showing runners at first and third, and only one down,
- 1:55:12Sam Mejias at the plate, and Sam picked up the other run bat in
- 1:55:16in the sixth inning with that sacrifice fly to Gary Maddox.
- 1:55:21Here comes the pitch to Mejias, and it's 4-1 upstairs.
- 1:55:34In field, a double play depth, Foster third, Knight first.
- 1:55:37Mejias takes ball two.
- 1:55:43Mets have gotten another run to now lead Atlanta 3-0 after five and a half innings of play,
- 1:55:52but Houston is shutting out Montreal 2-0 after three.
- 1:55:56Inside, ball three.
- 1:55:58The things should stay as they are right now in the National League West.
- 1:56:02If Atlanta loses, but Houston wins, the Reds will gain a half a game
- 1:56:07because Houston would then replace Atlanta as a first-place team in the Western Division.
- 1:56:11The Reds would move within a game and a half.
- 1:56:13Strike his call off the 3-0.
- 1:56:15Ideally, it would be nice to see Atlanta get beat and Houston also lose.
- 1:56:19That way the Reds would move to within one of first place.
- 1:56:23Things are pretty much bunched up here in the early going of the season's second half.
- 1:56:303-1 pitch, foul back.
- 1:56:40Foster let off the inning with a single and he moved to second on a ground out by Dreeson
- 1:56:44and advances to third on a hard hit line drive base hit to right field by Ray Knight.
- 1:56:51Knight going.
- 1:56:52Pitch is swung on.
- 1:56:53Fly ball, center field.
- 1:56:54Waiting on it, Maddox.
- 1:56:55He makes the catch.
- 1:56:56Foster tags.
- 1:56:57We'll try to score.
- 1:56:58Here comes the throw.
- 1:56:59Foster's in there.
- 1:57:00He's right between the legs of Bob Boone who was straddling the plate.
- 1:57:03Another sacrifice fly for Sam that he has a 3-0 and brother what a job he's done filling in for Ken Griffey.
- 1:57:17Knight stays at first as the Reds add another run to their lead.
- 1:57:25That's the seventh RBI of the year for Samming.
- 1:57:27Here's Michael Berry.
- 1:57:32Grounded out three times tonight but of course facing Ron Reed for the first time.
- 1:57:39Ball is high and inside.
- 1:57:45We might tell you if you don't already know that baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn announced late this afternoon
- 1:57:50that he has put off making a decision on the format changes until tomorrow.
- 1:57:56There's a throw to first.
- 1:57:57We understand that he met with presidents of both leagues, Lee McPhail and Chubb Feeney,
- 1:58:03and apparently will be making a decision on how the format changes will be.
- 1:58:07Here's a fly ball hit back into left center field but Greg Gross is waiting on it and makes the catch.
- 1:58:12So the eighth inning turns into a scoring inning for Cincinnati.
- 1:58:15One run, two hits, one left, and to the ninth inning with a score.
- 1:58:20Reds 3, Phillies nothing.
- 1:58:23With the purpose of providing food, drink, and lodging for the weary traveler,
- 1:58:27Rudolph J. Fitcher set up a fine, reputable establishment in the 1800s.
- 1:58:32And you can be sure that tradition lives on today at the R.J. Fitcher Inn at the heart of historic downtown Likester.
- 1:58:39The R.J. Fitcher Inn features distinctive food and cocktails in an elegant garden setting with friendly service and atmosphere.
- 1:58:46The R.J. Fitcher Inn at the sign of the green tree in downtown Likester.
- 1:58:51If everyone's having big sales, why do people come to Lowe's?
- 1:58:55I find them very competitive. That's why I started shopping at Lowe's.
- 1:59:00Other establishments will put something on sale and make it look cheaper.
- 1:59:04But actually overall Lowe's is the best buy.
- 1:59:07When Lowe's put something on sale, it doesn't just look like a bargain.
- 1:59:11Right now we have enterprise paint. Exterior latex is $7.99 a gallon. That's a $6 savings.
- 1:59:17At Lowe's, our name reflects our prices.
- 1:59:21Tom Saber three outs away from his eighth victory of the 1981 season and also three outs away from his 55th career shutout.
- 1:59:3254 is tops among active pitchers in tenth all time. Tom has one shutout earlier this season.
- 1:59:38That was against the Astros on the 8th of May here at Riverfront when he limited them to six base hits and a 4-0 Cincinnati victory.
- 1:59:46And was part of another shutout on the 19th of May, a game that the Reds won in Wrigley field five to nothing.
- 1:59:51Saber pitched five innings in that game giving up two base hits.
- 1:59:55But had to leave with a tight left thigh muscle and Paul Moscoe came on to finish it off.
- 2:00:01Joe Price and Tommy Hume back to the bullpen as Blake McBride opens up the Philadelphia night.
- 2:00:07Saber delivers and McBride bounces slowly right side wide. A first reason has it, underhands to Saber.
- 2:00:12Tom got there and McBride might have stepped on his foot.
- 2:00:16A close play and out says Harry Wendelstad, but McBride might have stepped on Saber's foot.
- 2:00:20Tom pulled it away quickly, but apparently he's all right.
- 2:00:25Well apparently they ruled safe on that play. I thought he was out. It looked like the man ruled out.
- 2:00:30Wendelstad, it looked like he gave the outside and it looks like Saber got there and McBride is still standing at first base.
- 2:00:41Harry Wendelstad, folks, I'll tell you what, he missed one badly there.
- 2:00:46Tom got the back side of the bag, the outfield side of the bag, and Winfield, Wendelstad calls safe and McBride and the Phillies get a gift.
- 2:00:56Gary Maddox is swinging a foul off the end of the bat.
- 2:01:06That'll be the fourth Philadelphia hit.
- 2:01:12Maddox is one for three. He pops it up without a play, dropping well back of the Cincinnati dugout.
- 2:01:19He had that broken bat line drive in the seventh inning that Concepcion came in on and all of a sudden Davie realized the error of his ways,
- 2:01:28but by that time the ball had enough on it to clear him for a base hit.
- 2:01:34Strike two pitch, high for a ball.
- 2:01:38So really two of the four Philadelphia hits have been somewhat tainted.
- 2:01:42The hit by Maddox and this one right here by McBride, the others belonging to Rose, a single, and Manny Treo a base hit.
- 2:01:51Reds leading three to nothing in the top of the ninth.
- 2:01:56Maddox pulls it foul and that'll make the Philadelphia dugout count holes at a ball in two strikes.
- 2:02:18Here's a long pause in the pitch.
- 2:02:21A ground ball left side. Concepcion gets to it, goes to second. They all settle for the fourth play on Beg McBride.
- 2:02:27Davie moving off to his right.
- 2:02:29And quick throwing to Ronnie Oster. McBride forced his second one gone. Here's Larry Boa.
- 2:02:35If you had tickets to Reds games that weren't played because of the baseball strike, you can exchange those tickets for any of the 21 remaining Reds home games.
- 2:02:43They're at the stadium, at the 580 gift shop, at Reds branch ticket agencies by mail, or at the ticket windows when you come to the game.
- 2:02:50Down Boa.
- 2:02:52Popped a short, lined a short. Davie took one away from him in the fifth inning and it's flying to left.
- 2:02:59Bluffs the bunt, takes the ball.
- 2:03:13One oak to the plate and another bluff bunt attempt by Boa. Two balls in those strikes.
- 2:03:21The Reds win and Sieber would go 8-2. Carlton would go 9-3.
- 2:03:28Carlton will lose his second straight start since baseball resumed a week ago last night.
- 2:03:38Tom needs a strike here against Larry Boa and cannot get it.
- 2:03:44Inside with a fastball, 3-0.
- 2:03:56That's a strike on the inside edge. Bob Boone is on deck.
- 2:04:01We look down into the Philadelphia dugout and see Keith Morland with a bat in hand. We could possibly see a pinch hitter before the pitcher-reads turn comes up.
- 2:04:10That is ball four, so Boa draws a walk. The fourth given up by Sieber. Maddox moves on to second base.
- 2:04:19And Bob Boone is going to be taken down. And let's see if it's going to be Dell Unter. It will be. Unter coming to the plate and here comes Mack.
- 2:04:34He went out there in the eighth inning and after conversing with Sieber, he elected to leave him in.
- 2:04:40That was before Matthews batted. He drew a walk, but then with the bases loaded and two down, Sieber got Schmidt to bounce in to the mound and end the inning.
- 2:04:48And now the Reds are going to make the pitching change. That's it for Tom. Boa with a fine job he did tonight.
- 2:04:55And now we'll turn it over to right-hander Tommy Hume. The Phillies with two highs, one out.
- 2:05:01And a 3-0 Reds lead here in the ninth inning as Hume comes on, hopefully to the rescue. We'll see how it turns out after this.
- 2:05:09Top quality entertaining doesn't just happen. It takes months of dedication and hard work. Filled with high energy and great expectations.
- 2:05:25And rehearsals over and over again, making sure it all comes out just right.
- 2:05:31At Kings Island we put this kind of commitment into everything we do. From all across America, hundreds of dynamic, talented young performers combine their special skills to bring you a quality of entertainment that's nothing less than sensational.
- 2:05:45Whether it's our biggest production or our smallest spectators, we give it our all. Because we know that when you really put your heart into something, it shows.
- 2:05:59Year after year, every day is opening night at Kings Island.
- 2:06:11Tommy Hume onto the mound for the Cincinnati Reds. And for Hume, this will be the 30th time he's been on in relief this season.
- 2:06:17A record of five wins and two losses. Another run average of 3.23 and seven saves. Since the beginning of the second season, Hume has been called on four times.
- 2:06:31He, in five and a third innings, has allowed only one base hit and no runs in those four appearances. Has saved two games and won one.
- 2:06:41So despite the fact that the Phillies have a left-handed batter up there, Del Unser batting for Bob Boone. John McNamara brings on the right-hander Hume, who's been on a personal tear, pitching so effectively.
- 2:06:53The Phillies have two men on base and Unser batting 2.19 waiting. Hume delivers and Unser fouls it away.
- 2:07:01Del has done a fine job for the Phillies in this particular type of roll right here. This season, four hits and 14 pinch hit appearances with four RBIs.
- 2:07:12No home runs, six RBIs. Maddox at second. Boa at first. The one-strike pitch to Unser swung on and hit in the air. Shallow right field, Collins with plenty of time.
- 2:07:25He has it to God.
- 2:07:34Oh, with two out, the batter will be Greg Gross. He'll be up for the second time in as many innings.
- 2:07:38Came on in the eighth inning to pinch hit for Carlton and fly it out.
- 2:07:47Phillies are down to their final out. Hume trying to nail it down for Tom Siever. Kicks and throws and Unser takes the strike.
- 2:07:58Make that Greg Gross strike one call.
- 2:08:05So Doug Baer is taking up now where Hume left off in the bullpen. Ground ball up the middle. That's going to be a base hit.
- 2:08:12Here comes Maddox around third and Philadelphia is on the board on that two out single to center by Greg Gross.
- 2:08:19It's now a three to one game.
- 2:08:26Gross hit one on the ground hard, dead up the middle to center field.
- 2:08:31Scoring Gary Maddox and moving Boa onto second base and that'll bring up Pete Gross.
- 2:08:39Gross is going to be taken down and Lonnie Smith will go in to run at first base.
- 2:08:51Mr. Gross does his job as he keeps the Phillies alive. They finally dent the plate.
- 2:08:58Rose one for three with a walk. Pitch taken high and away, ball one.
- 2:09:14Phillies two runs shy. Hume checks the runners, pitches. Rose takes high, two balls and no strikes.
- 2:09:23The end that the Phillies just scored of course is Sebers and so too would be the runner at second Boa.
- 2:09:28But Hume hoping to end it here. He needs a strike and gets it.
- 2:09:31After getting behind two and oh he pours one over Beltie and Rose with a count of two balls and a strike.
- 2:09:43Stretching the pitch. Swung on, fly ball left field. That should do it. Foster comes on and this one belongs to the Reds.
- 2:09:50Here in the ninth inning the Phillies get a run on two bases but they lead to,
- 2:09:55as the Reds come up with a victory in the first of this two game series by a final score of three to one.
- 2:10:00We'll be back in just a moment.
