- 0:00Welcome back to Reformed Thinking.
- 0:01Today we are doing a deep dive into just two verses, but they
- 0:05are incredibly dense verses. From first John chapter 5.
- 0:10We're looking at verses 4:00 and 5:00.
- 0:12Right. And these verses promised this
- 0:13incredible total victory in the Christian life.
- 0:16But, and this is the key, it anchors that victory in a
- 0:21spiritual reality that is just completely at odds with how the
- 0:25world thinks about success or, you know, overcoming.
- 0:28OK, so let's unpack this. We hear the word victory all the
- 0:31time in Christian circles, but the definitions can be really
- 0:34fuzzy. Sometimes it sounds like good
- 0:36marketing. Sometimes it means feeling good
- 0:38or being prosperous. Yeah, very vague.
- 0:40But the sources we looked at really zoom in on this passage
- 0:43first, John 5.45, because it gives such a sharp, almost
- 0:46technical answer to what overcoming the world really is.
- 0:49And more to the point, where that power to conquer comes
- 0:52from. Exactly.
- 0:53John is writing to bring clarity here.
- 0:55I mean, he's writing to believers who are struggling,
- 0:57who are confused, and our mission today is really to just
- 1:00trace his logic. He builds this tight chain.
- 1:03That's the chain. It starts with the new birth.
- 1:06A new birth from God leads inevitably to overcoming the
- 1:10world. That overcoming happens through
- 1:12faith, and that faith has to have a very specific object, the
- 1:16true Son of God. So it's not self help.
- 1:19Not at all. We're aiming to show that this
- 1:21victory is not self generated strength.
- 1:23It's not about your willpower. It's a spiritual reality that is
- 1:27grounded completely in a sovereign act of God.
- 1:30So for you, the listener, this is really about the difference
- 1:33between striving for a victory you have to earn.
- 1:35Versus participating in a victory that's already been
- 1:38secured for you and given to you.
- 1:39It's a massive shift in perspective.
- 1:41So let's start at the very beginning of that chain, the
- 1:44source of this new conquering life.
- 1:46John kicks us off with a really sweeping absolute statement.
- 1:50In first John 5.4 he says for everyone who has been born of
- 1:54God overcomes the world. Right there, that's the
- 1:57prerequisite. The new birth or regeneration is
- 2:00the absolute starting point for any kind of victory.
- 2:02He's saying it's the intrinsic source, the very thing that
- 2:05makes overcoming possible at all.
- 2:07And it guarantees it. The phrasing implies that all
- 2:10who are born of God will, as a pattern of their life, conquer
- 2:14this world system. OK, so the sources you mentioned
- 2:17said we have to get into the grammar here.
- 2:19The phrase has been born of God. We do.
- 2:21It sounds technical, but you can't get the full meaning
- 2:24without it. John uses a Greek perfect
- 2:27passive participle gujanimena. Gujanimena.
- 2:30And that grammatical choice carries almost all of the
- 2:32theological weight of the entire sentence.
- 2:35So let's spend some time on that Why is this perfect passive
- 2:39participle so central to a reformed understanding of grace?
- 2:43Well, let's break it down into its two parts.
- 2:45First, you have the perfect aspect.
- 2:47When John says a believer has been born, the perfect tense
- 2:50points to an action that was decisively completed in the
- 2:53past. A1 time event.
- 2:55A1 time event with ongoing abiding results.
- 2:59That past action God regenerating you creates a
- 3:02present state. The believer remains permanently
- 3:05in the state of being regenerated.
- 3:07So it's not something I have to repeat.
- 3:08I don't have to get born again again tomorrow.
- 3:10No, absolutely not. It's a finished, secure, divine
- 3:14act. And this is so important because
- 3:16it means your ability to fight a spiritual battle today isn't
- 3:20based on how you feel today or how much willpower you mustered
- 3:24this morning. It's based on a spiritual
- 3:25reality that was established and finished the moment God acted.
- 3:29Exactly that finished act in the past is what sustains your
- 3:33ability to overcome in the present.
- 3:35And that leads us to the second piece of the grammar.
- 3:38Which is the passive voice. Right, the passive voice.
- 3:41This underscores that this birth is something that is
- 3:45unilaterally received you. Don't do it to yourself.
- 3:47You don't do it to yourself. It is not self generated.
- 3:49It's not even initiated by a human decision.
- 3:52It is entirely the result of God's sovereign work upon you.
- 3:55So John seems to be deliberately using his grammar to just shut
- 3:59the door on any idea that we contribute to our own new birth.
- 4:03That's precisely the point. It signals divine initiative.
- 4:06God acts decisively to 'cause this new life, the turning
- 4:09point, is a divine act, not a human one.
- 4:11The ability to believe, The ability to repent, that ability
- 4:15is given in the new birth. And this is where we get the
- 4:18term monarchistic grace. This is it.
- 4:21The sources really connect this grammar to that theological
- 4:24framework. It's an act of monarchistic
- 4:25grace. Manos 1 Ergon work.
- 4:29One worker. One worker, God alone works to
- 4:33renew the will, making the heart able and willing to embrace
- 4:36Christ. He implants a new principle of
- 4:39life. So the power to overcome just
- 4:41flows directly from that sovereign act.
- 4:43Yes, the ability to conquer is literally built into the new
- 4:47life you receive. It's not an add on you get later
- 4:50through discipline I. Want to push on that for a
- 4:52second? What if it was synergistic?
- 4:54You know, if it required God and our will working together to
- 4:57create that new life? Would the passive voice even
- 5:00make sense here? No, it would be the wrong
- 5:02grammatical choice. It would fundamentally
- 5:04contradict the passive voice. If the human will was a coequal
- 5:08cause in creating the new life, you'd need a different
- 5:11construction, maybe an active voice.
- 5:13But John doesn't use that. He doesn't.
- 5:15He specifically chose this perfect passive structure to
- 5:19safeguard the truth that this new life is a divine
- 5:22implantation. The person who was once
- 5:25dominated by the world is now, by grace, no longer subject to
- 5:29it. Because the life itself is
- 5:30victorious. Right.
- 5:32And John is clear that this isn't just for a few super
- 5:34Christians. He says everyone who has been
- 5:37born of God. Yes, and he uses this neuter
- 5:40singular word pan, which means everything or everyone.
- 5:45He's stressing that this is a universal reality for this whole
- 5:48class of people. Overcoming the world is the
- 5:50normal expected characteristic pattern.
- 5:52It's a family trait. It's a family trait of the
- 5:54children of God. It's a declaration.
- 5:56If you were born of God, you overcome the world.
- 5:58Period. So regeneration is the cause and
- 6:02victory is the inevitable effect.
- 6:03It's the necessary effect. And if that effect, that
- 6:06continuous pattern of overcoming, is totally absent,
- 6:09John's logic forces you to question if the cause, the new
- 6:12birth, was ever present. It's an uncomfortable thought,
- 6:15but it's right there in the text.
- 6:16It is. The new birth gives you an
- 6:19intrinsically victorious nature, and that new nature just
- 6:23fundamentally alters your relationship to the world
- 6:25system. This is the foundation for
- 6:27everything that follows. So after establishing the source
- 6:30of victory, John then gets even more precise.
- 6:33To define overcoming. He uses two different aspects of
- 6:37the same Greek verb nika. Which means to conquer or to
- 6:41gain the victory. Right.
- 6:43And this distinction he makes is so important because it
- 6:45separates Christ's finished once for all work from our ongoing
- 6:50participation in it. OK.
- 6:51So he's using language with surgical precision here.
- 6:54He's showing us the objective basis for our victory and I'm
- 6:57the the subjective expression. Of it.
- 6:58That's a perfect way to put it. We have to look at the decisive
- 7:01conquest first. When he talks about the victory
- 7:03that secured the triumph, he uses an aorist active
- 7:06participle, nikitessa. Nikitessa OK and a chorus points
- 7:09to a past completed act. A decisive, completed act.
- 7:13It's instantaneous. It's non repeatable.
- 7:15This is the moment the war was won, once and for all.
- 7:17And this isn't our victory. No interpreters across the board
- 7:21connect this Aris verb to Christ's own triumph over the
- 7:26world, over sin, over Satan, through his death and
- 7:29resurrection. It echoes what Jesus said in
- 7:31John 16.33, right? Take heart, I have overcome the
- 7:35world. Exactly.
- 7:37Christ's victory is objective, It's external to us.
- 7:39It's finished. It's what establishes the
- 7:42certainty of the outcome. OK, that's the finished work.
- 7:44That's the objective reality. But if the victory is finished,
- 7:48why am I still struggling so much?
- 7:49How does that big cosmic make finished work connect to my
- 7:53struggles on a Tuesday morning? And that is the perfect
- 7:55question. And that's where the second
- 7:57tense John uses comes in. The continuous conquest.
- 8:00OK, back in the first part of the verse, everyone who has been
- 8:02born of God overcomes the world. That word overcomes is a present
- 8:05active indicative. You got us.
- 8:07And the present tense, unlike the Aerist, is ongoing.
- 8:10It is. It portrays overcoming as this
- 8:13ongoing characteristic reality. The person born of God keeps on
- 8:17overcoming the world. It's not a single decision you
- 8:19made. Once it's a continuous.
- 8:22It is an ongoing participation in the decisive victory that
- 8:26Christ already secured. It's the pattern of life for
- 8:29every single regenerate person. So.
- 8:32John is deliberately holding these two things in tension.
- 8:35An objective finished victory in the past.
- 8:37That's the aorist Christ's work, right?
- 8:40And an ongoing, subjective manifestation of that victory in
- 8:43the present. That's the believer's life.
- 8:45He is, and in doing so he corrects 2 huge potential
- 8:49errors. What are they?
- 8:51First, he prevents legalism or perfectionism, the idea that
- 8:55victory depends purely on our performance right now.
- 8:57He says no. Your ability to overcome in the
- 9:00present is entirely grounded in Christ's finished work in the
- 9:03past. My present victory depends on
- 9:05his past victory. Absolutely.
- 9:07But second, he also prevents the opposite error.
- 9:09Antinomianism, the idea that since Christ already won, it
- 9:12doesn't matter how I live. Presumption.
- 9:14Presumption, John says no. The proof that you're connected
- 9:17to that past decisive victory is the continuous pattern of
- 9:20resistance you show in the present.
- 9:22The 2 are inseparable. So true faith is always active.
- 9:26If you're united to the Conqueror, you can't help but
- 9:28live like a conqueror, even while you're still fighting the
- 9:31daily skirmishes. That's a great way to put it.
- 9:33The new life you received in regeneration inherently rebels
- 9:37against the world system. The power source is permanent
- 9:41and external. Christ's a worst victory.
- 9:43But the expression of that power is continuous and internal, our
- 9:48present tense overcoming, right? Let's go back to that
- 9:51inheritance analogy from the sources.
- 9:53I think it makes this grammar really clear.
- 9:55It does. It's a great illustration.
- 9:56So the perfect passive participle has been born.
- 10:00That's like the legal document. It's the deed that confirms you
- 10:04received the asset, the new life from God, and that state is
- 10:08permanent. OK, so I had the deed then the
- 10:11aorist participle has overcome. That's the moment the donor,
- 10:15Christ, decisively paid the full price and secured that asset.
- 10:20That's the cross and resurrection.
- 10:21The transaction is done. It cannot be undone.
- 10:24So then the present active indicative overcomes.
- 10:26That's you continuously living off the dividends of that asset.
- 10:30It's the practical daily reality that shows you keep benefiting
- 10:34from a victory that was already won for you.
- 10:37You're continuously conquering because you inherited a life
- 10:39that already conquered. Exactly.
- 10:40You see the logical flow. The new birth is the
- 10:43prerequisite for the continuous experience of victory.
- 10:47So, moving on, John then names the specific instrument that
- 10:50connects Christ's decisive victory to our continuous
- 10:54reality. Right at the end of verse 4.
- 10:57And this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith.
- 11:00Our faith. Now we have to be careful here.
- 11:02We've established that God does all the work in regeneration and
- 11:05Christ secured the victory. So how can faith, our faith, be
- 11:09the victor? We can't make faith into the
- 11:11hero of the story. And that is the essential point
- 11:13to make. Faith is purely instrumental,
- 11:15not meritorious. When John says our faith, he
- 11:19doesn't mean the strength or the quality of our trust is what
- 11:22earns the victory. So faith is a tool.
- 11:25It's a tool. It's the God-given memes by
- 11:28which the new life connects to Christ's objective conquest.
- 11:33Faith is a dependent, receptive act.
- 11:35It just points away from itself to its object.
- 11:38The empty hand. It's the empty hand, the
- 11:39Westminster Confession says. Faith is the alone instrument by
- 11:42which we receive and rest upon Christ.
- 11:44It's just the mechanism of reception.
- 11:46So the power isn't in my believing the powers in the one
- 11:49I'm believing in. Precisely the efficacy of this
- 11:51victorious faith lies entirely in its object, who is Christ.
- 11:57By trusting Christ, you are united to the One who already
- 12:00secured the conquest. Your victory is just a
- 12:02derivative of His. So faith is the pipeline.
- 12:05It's the spirit sustained pipeline that allows the
- 12:08believer to appropriate and live out the victory that was already
- 12:11given in regeneration. OK, so how does this faith
- 12:13actually work day-to-day? What does it look like on the
- 12:16ground to use this instrument to resist the world?
- 12:19It functions as ongoing trust and reliance on the sun.
- 12:22It's not a one time intellectual nod.
- 12:24John defines faith as this active, living, continuous state
- 12:28of dependence. Which is why the verb for
- 12:30believes is also in the present tense.
- 12:32It's ongoing. It's ongoing.
- 12:34It's an active posture. The world is constantly trying
- 12:37to deceive us with lies about what's valuable, what's true,
- 12:40what will make you happy. And it is by actively believing
- 12:43God's counter promises that the believer resists those lies.
- 12:48It's believing that Christ is better than what the world
- 12:51offers, that ongoing, living faith is what sustains the act
- 12:55of overcoming. So the moment we stop actively
- 12:58trusting God's promises and start listening to the world's
- 13:00promises, that's when our continuous victory falters.
- 13:03And that's why we have to maintain that receptive posture.
- 13:06It's what allows the believer to keep living out their new
- 13:09identity, connecting that spiritual reality of the new
- 13:12birth directly to ethical action.
- 13:14And that leads perfectly from the function of faith to the
- 13:17object of faith, because John immediately sharpens the
- 13:20definition with this rhetorical question.
- 13:22Right in verse 5, who is it that overcomes the world except the
- 13:25one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
- 13:28Why that specific technical confession?
- 13:31Why is that so critical for victory?
- 13:33Why not just a generic belief in God or a higher power?
- 13:37Because that specific confession carries a massive Christological
- 13:40weight. Julian is saying that Victoria's
- 13:42faith is inseparable from orthodox doctrine about who
- 13:46Jesus is. He's drawing a very clear
- 13:47boundary line. So if the object of our faith is
- 13:50wrong, the faith itself is powerless.
- 13:53It can't connect you to the objective conquest, so your
- 13:56faith has to have specific content.
- 13:58And that content is Jesus is the Son of God.
- 14:01Let's break that phrase down. What are the two essential
- 14:03parts? Well, first, Jesus.
- 14:06This points to the historical Incarnate person, the man who
- 14:09lived and died and rose in 1st century Palestine.
- 14:13This grounds our faith in his true physical humanity.
- 14:16In second, the Son of God. This identifies him as the
- 14:19unique, eternal Son who shares the very nature of the Father.
- 14:23This affirms his true deity, and only a divine being could
- 14:26actually secure that once for all victory over the world.
- 14:29Now, John wasn't writing in a vacuum, The sources mentioned he
- 14:32was addressing specific doctrinal attacks happening in
- 14:34his community. He was he was battling early
- 14:37forms of what we call Gnosticism, specifically a
- 14:40belief system connected to a man named Sarinthus and.
- 14:43What was the error there? It was a form of dosatism.
- 14:46They claim that Christ's physical body was just an
- 14:49illusion, or that the divine Christ Spirit came on the man
- 14:52Jesus at his baptism and then left him before the crucifixion.
- 14:56So they denied that the divine Son of God actually suffered and
- 14:58died in the flesh. Exactly.
- 15:00And John's point is, if you deny that, if you deny that the same
- 15:04person, Jesus, is the Son of God who truly suffered, you destroy
- 15:08the entire foundation of the victory.
- 15:11An illusory Christ can atone for sin.
- 15:13A merely human Christ can't conquer death.
- 15:16So the faith that overcomes has to be a specific Orthodox trust
- 15:19in the Incarnate Divine Son. It cannot be vague spirituality.
- 15:23It cannot be generic religiosity.
- 15:25This means the power of our faith is entirely dependent on
- 15:28the nature of the one we're trusting in.
- 15:30If Jesus is anything less than truly God and truly man, our
- 15:34faith is empty. That's the critical point.
- 15:37This confession aligns perfectly with later Catholic and Reformed
- 15:40doctrine, which affirms Christ as the God man.
- 15:43The faith that overcomes is bound to him because he is the
- 15:46only one who could conquer sin, death and the world system.
- 15:50So what about today? What are the consequences if
- 15:53someone denies or reduces the person of Christ, like in some
- 15:56modern cults or liberal theologies?
- 15:58Any denial, any reduction, undermines the foundation of
- 16:02victory. John's question and who is it
- 16:04that Overcomes is designed to exclude all other options?
- 16:07It excludes Jesus as just a good moral teacher.
- 16:10Or an inspirational figure, or a created being, like an Arianism.
- 16:14If you trust in a reduced Jesus, a different Jesus, John says
- 16:18that is simply not saving faith and therefore it cannot claim
- 16:21the promise of overcoming life and victory are tied to faith in
- 16:25this specific Jesus. So you can't separate the new
- 16:28birth and the continuous conquest from right doctrine
- 16:30about Christ. The victory is doctrinally
- 16:32defined because it's source is doctrinally defined.
- 16:35So now we understand the source, which is regeneration, we
- 16:38understand the mode, which is faith, and the object, which is
- 16:42correct Christology. Now we have to define the enemy
- 16:45we're conquering. The world in John's writings,
- 16:48cosmos is a very specific theological idea.
- 16:51He doesn't just mean the planet Earth.
- 16:53Not at all. He doesn't mean the physical
- 16:55creation or even just all the people on Earth in a general
- 16:58sense. So how does John define this
- 17:00world that we are supposed to be continuously conquering?
- 17:03He defines it as a moral spiritual system that is
- 17:06organized in active opposition to God.
- 17:10It's the organized moral and spiritual order that's in
- 17:13rebellion against its Creator. It's the collective alternative
- 17:16to the Kingdom of God. It is.
- 17:17It's the realm of hostility and unbelief, a system that doesn't
- 17:21know its maker, that hates Christ and by extension hates
- 17:24his followers because they are not of the world.
- 17:27So it's not just being a good person.
- 17:29We are actively resisting an organized counter Kingdom, one
- 17:32that has its own culture, its own values, its own reward
- 17:35structure. Precisely.
- 17:37And John doesn't leave it as an abstract idea.
- 17:40He gives us concrete examples earlier in his letter in First
- 17:43John chapter 2. Right, verses 15 and 16.
- 17:45He says the world system is characterized by three things,
- 17:49the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of
- 17:52life. That's the practical
- 17:54battlefield. Great, let's bring those down
- 17:55with some modern examples. What is the lust of the flesh in
- 17:58the 21st century? Well, it's those intense
- 18:01disordered physical appetites, sexual impurity, intemperance,
- 18:05addiction. The world system is built around
- 18:07gratifying these things instantly.
- 18:09It promises satisfaction and freedom through indulgence.
- 18:13It does so. Overcoming here means resisting
- 18:15the constant commercialization of sex, the normalization of
- 18:19what God forbids, the pull toward gluttony or substance
- 18:23abuse. Faith overcomes this by trusting
- 18:25that Christ offers a deeper, real satisfaction that the world
- 18:29can't. OK then, the lust of the eyes.
- 18:31That sounds like materialism. It is.
- 18:33It's the desire for what we see, the craving for things that
- 18:36promise status or comfort or security.
- 18:39It's greed. The world bombards us with ads
- 18:42designed to make us feel inadequate without the next new
- 18:44thing. So how does faith overcome that?
- 18:46Faith overcomes that by actively believing that Christ is our
- 18:50true treasure. It's knowing that the temporary
- 18:52riches the world dangles in front of us are a delusion that
- 18:56enables us to practice contentment and generosity
- 18:59instead of constant accumulation.
- 19:01And finally, the pride of life. This seems more internal.
- 19:05It's about self exultation it. Is it's that competitive spirit,
- 19:08the desperate need for human approval, the worship of
- 19:12self-sufficiency? It's finding your worth in your
- 19:15job title, your social media followers, your accomplishments.
- 19:18So overcoming the pride of life means what?
- 19:20It means embracing the humility of Christ.
- 19:23It means actively believing that your identity and worth are
- 19:26defined entirely by God's grace, by the fact that you're
- 19:29passively born of God, not by what you can achieve.
- 19:32So overcoming the world is this continuous pattern of resisting
- 19:36these three things, impurity, greed and self promotion.
- 19:40And that resistance isn't powered by willpower.
- 19:42It's powered by the new life we've received.
- 19:44And this is exactly why John says in verse three that God's
- 19:47commandments are not burdensome. Because we're no longer enslaved
- 19:50to the world's desires. Right.
- 19:52If you are enslaved to the lust of the flesh, then God's
- 19:56commands about purity feel like a crushing weight.
- 19:59But if you've been set free, they are the path of that
- 20:02freedom. So obedience is the practical
- 20:04expression of the victory. It's the ethical outflow of it.
- 20:07The victory starts in the heart, rooted in regeneration, and it's
- 20:11expressed through this obedient resistance to the cosmos.
- 20:14OK, so this all links back to John's main purpose for writing
- 20:17this letter in the 1st place, which he states is so that his
- 20:20readers may know that they have eternal life.
- 20:24He wrote this for their assurance.
- 20:26Right for Christians who are unsettled, who are doubting
- 20:28their salvation because of false teaching.
- 20:30So how does this whole definition of overcoming
- 20:33grounded in regeneration and Orthodox faith?
- 20:36How does that provide assurance? It provides assurance by giving
- 20:39them a test, or rather a set of intertwined tests of life.
- 20:43Assurance isn't based on your feelings, it's based on
- 20:46observing the genuine work of God in your life.
- 20:49And what are John's tests? There are three, and they're all
- 20:51linked, right? Doctrine about Christ which we
- 20:54just covered, obedience to God's commandments and love for other
- 20:58believers overcoming the world is inseparable from all three of
- 21:02these. They all flow from the same
- 21:04source, being born of God. So if the new birth guarantees A
- 21:08continuous pattern of conquering the world, John wants his
- 21:11readers to look at their lives and see that pattern of
- 21:14resistance. Yes.
- 21:16And where they see that struggle, where they see that
- 21:18resistance, they can have assurance that the new life is
- 21:21real. The assurance is grounded in
- 21:23God's grace, not their own perfection.
- 21:25But this is where it gets difficult for people.
- 21:28If victory is guaranteed for everyone born of God, what about
- 21:31our visible failures, our deep struggles?
- 21:34What about people who seem to completely abandoned the faith?
- 21:36It's a necessary question, and I think the answer is found in the
- 21:39doctrine of the perseverance of the Saints.
- 21:42The Westminster Confession teaches that those whom God has
- 21:44called can either totally nor finally fall away from the state
- 21:48of grace. So John's perfect passive
- 21:50participle that permanent new birth guarantees the
- 21:53sustainability of the new life. And therefore it guarantees the
- 21:57sustainability of the effect which is overcoming.
- 22:00A true believer will sin, they will fail daily, but they cannot
- 22:04cease the pattern of struggle and resistance.
- 22:06So a total, final, unrepentant capitulation to the world.
- 22:10Is evidence that the regeneration John talks about
- 22:12never actually happened. The struggle itself is the proof
- 22:16of life. The end of the struggle is the
- 22:18proof of death. This is so different from how
- 22:20our culture defines success or victory.
- 22:22The contrast is stark. A worldly view of victory is
- 22:26about external success, financial ease, feeling good.
- 22:30No struggles. It's about achieving comfort
- 22:32through human effort. Right.
- 22:34But the scriptural year is that victory is an intrinsic
- 22:37spiritual reality grounded in God's grace, and it's manifested
- 22:40as faithfulness to Christ in the midst of suffering, persecution,
- 22:43and distress. Overcoming isn't escaping the
- 22:46battle, it's remaining faithful in it.
- 22:48So the true mark of the overcomer is not the absence of
- 22:51struggle, but the persistence in the struggle.
- 22:53Precisely the believer who is marginalized, who is battling
- 22:58and dwelling sin, who is walking through deep suffering, that
- 23:01person can still be an overcomer because their victory isn't in
- 23:04their circumstances. It rests on their new identity
- 23:07and their allegiance to Christ. So that grief you feel over your
- 23:10own sin? Yes.
- 23:11And that tension you feel with the world's values.
- 23:14Those are actually powerful signs of new life.
- 23:16They're a confirmation that you are no longer at peace with the
- 23:19world. And that's a huge comfort for
- 23:21the tender conscience. The pain of the fight is
- 23:23actually proof that the new victorious life is present and
- 23:27active inside you. It is your confidence doesn't
- 23:30rest in the stability of your own will, but in the finished
- 23:34work of the Son of God and the permanence of the new life He
- 23:36grants. That's the truth John presents
- 23:39To be born of God and to believe in his Son is to share right now
- 23:43in a victory that this world can neither give you nor take away.
- 23:46Hashtag tech outro. So we've done a careful analysis
- 23:48here of first John 5.45, and we've seen that the basis of
- 23:51overcoming is the sovereign monarchistic act of
- 23:54regeneration. It implants a new life that is
- 23:57just intrinsically incompatible with the world's rule.
- 23:59And that new life is continuously expressed through
- 24:02faith in the Incarnate Divine Son of God.
- 24:05The victory is Christ's secured in the past.
- 24:08Our faith is the instrument that lets us participate in it daily.
- 24:11It's a defining characteristic of the children of God.
- 24:14So for you, our listener, here's a final thought to consider.
- 24:18If the life you've received in regeneration is intrinsically
- 24:21victorious over the world's enslaving power, and we know
- 24:24that this world system is passing away, what specific
- 24:27cultural value or aspiration or pursuit may be related to the
- 24:31lust of the eyes or the pride of life?
- 24:33Have you noticed becoming increasingly distasteful to you?
- 24:36Consider that growing tension not as a sign of your failure,
- 24:38but is powerful, concrete evidence that your new nature is
- 24:41actively at work.
