- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, everybody, It's Jeff here. I wanted to let
- 0:02Speaker 1: you know.
- 0:02Speaker 2: We recorded this Table Talk interview on Monday, October twenty first,
- 0:07Speaker 2: twenty twenty four. By the time you hear this, some
- 0:09Speaker 2: things may have changed here there, but we hope you
- 0:11Speaker 2: enjoy the show. Welcome to Table Talk here at the
- 0:34Speaker 2: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:38Speaker 2: sports podcast show in the world, eleven and a half
- 0:40Speaker 2: years strong.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We got a great discussion coming your.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Way, as we always do on our table talk interview shows. Boy,
- 0:47Speaker 2: the NFL season is certainly interesting. A lot of really
- 0:51Speaker 2: interesting storylines. We're gonna be getting into the NFC East
- 0:54Speaker 2: a little bit with a couple teams, yes, the Philadelphia
- 0:56Speaker 2: Eagles included in that, and some other lines that are
- 1:00Speaker 2: persisting throughout the NFL. As we were wrapping up Week seven,
- 1:05Speaker 2: gonna be heading into Week eight, what's this NFL season
- 1:08Speaker 2: gonna be looking like in the future. We got a
- 1:10Speaker 2: great discussion coming your way. Here we go, joining us
- 1:13Speaker 2: this week for a great discussion on where this NFL
- 1:17Speaker 2: season is going and again some storylines that we've been following.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Here we have from Fox Sports Phillies, the Gambler, the
- 1:23Speaker 2: one and only John Jansen, John Buddy, how you doing.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Man, I'm doing good. Thanks for having me. I see
- 1:28Speaker 3: Penn State in the background there the video, and Penn
- 1:30Speaker 3: State's doing pretty well. College football season has been great.
- 1:33Speaker 1: It's been busire. That's what a great season like for.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Like, I look at the college football season as like
- 1:39Speaker 2: some somewhat of a surprise. I mean, we talked this
- 1:42Speaker 2: past week on our show just about how the NIL
- 1:45Speaker 2: and the transfer portal has really changed. Of course, as
- 1:49Speaker 2: we know the dynamic, but there's actually some positive stuff
- 1:51Speaker 2: going on with na NIL and the transfer portal where
- 1:54Speaker 2: certain programs are learning and they're able to build based
- 1:59Speaker 2: on those particular aspects of this new college football world.
- 2:04Speaker 2: It's pretty it's pretty interesting.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yes it is. And I think scouting becomes a big
- 2:08Speaker 3: thing in college football down because instead of just taking
- 2:11Speaker 3: the most productive quarterback, let's just say, from the group
- 2:13Speaker 3: of five into the major conference teams, you're gonna have
- 2:17Speaker 3: to scout because the most productive isn't always going to
- 2:20Speaker 3: be the best for your program. And I think the
- 2:21Speaker 3: best example of that, Diego Pavia wasn't the most sought
- 2:25Speaker 3: after transfer portal guy. But I think he's been the
- 2:28Speaker 3: most impactful. And look at what Vanderbilt has done this
- 2:30Speaker 3: season their top twenty five, they beat Alabama. So yeah,
- 2:33Speaker 3: it's it's and il certainly is going to help the
- 2:36Speaker 3: top teams a lot, but I think it has in
- 2:38Speaker 3: a way given some of those teams like Vanderbilt a
- 2:40Speaker 3: way to get a quarterback like Diego Pavia out of nowhere. Yeah,
- 2:43Speaker 3: and he's become maybe the biggest most impactful player in
- 2:46Speaker 3: college football.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Absolutely, boy wet we could talk college football here right too.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I know all that, Yes, but we're going to be
- 2:52Speaker 2: getting into some NFL storylines here, and John, I really
- 2:55Speaker 2: wanted to, you know, dive into the Eagles right off
- 2:58Speaker 2: the bat. You know where Phillips Words podcast you cover
- 3:01Speaker 2: the Eagles as well as you know the Sixers, and
- 3:04Speaker 2: you dive into other Philly sports teams as well. This
- 3:07Speaker 2: team four and two. As we are, you know, done
- 3:10Speaker 2: with Week seven, we saw a dominant rushing game from
- 3:14Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley. I mean, they annihilated their division opponent this
- 3:17Speaker 2: past week and the New York Giants. And yes, I
- 3:19Speaker 2: was actually coming into this game a little bit concerned
- 3:22Speaker 2: because the Giants, while they are not great on offense.
- 3:24Speaker 2: They're a pretty good defense coming into the game, twenty
- 3:27Speaker 2: six sacs on the season, leading the NFL. I was
- 3:30Speaker 2: a little concerned about it, but certainly the Eagles took
- 3:33Speaker 2: care of business. Jalen Hurts wasn't asked to do too
- 3:36Speaker 2: much in the passing game, yet he's still missing some
- 3:39Speaker 2: passes and open.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Receivers over the middle of the field. We discussed it
- 3:43Speaker 1: on our postgame show as well.
- 3:45Speaker 2: What are your thoughts on where the Eagles are at
- 3:46Speaker 2: right now, both from a positive and negative aspect as
- 3:49Speaker 2: we are looking down Week eight now this NFL season.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think looking at the NFC landscape, it's a
- 3:55Speaker 3: good spot to be four and two. You just beat
- 3:57Speaker 3: a divisional opponent one. I think you're right. I don't
- 4:00Speaker 3: think the Giants are good, but I think I would
- 4:02Speaker 3: call them competitive.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Ye.
- 4:03Speaker 3: There are some teams that are just not competitive this year.
- 4:05Speaker 3: The Giants are certainly not one of those. They are
- 4:07Speaker 3: a competitive football team that could play good defense, and look,
- 4:10Speaker 3: they had some strengths that could go against what the
- 4:12Speaker 3: Eagles were kind of missing in Jordan Mylatta and left
- 4:14Speaker 3: tackle Brian Burns had a field day against Fred Johnson
- 4:17Speaker 3: and they kind of had to kind of scheme against
- 4:19Speaker 3: that to figure out ways to be able to run
- 4:21Speaker 3: with Fred Johnson getting beat and also find ways to
- 4:24Speaker 3: throw the ball. And Yeah, there are some negatives to
- 4:26Speaker 3: take away from Jalen Hurts. I think the biggest one
- 4:27Speaker 3: really was just holding onto the ball too long, something
- 4:29Speaker 3: that he does. But I feel like over and over
- 4:31Speaker 3: again we talk about the flaws, and there are flaws
- 4:34Speaker 3: like he doesn't throw over the middle. He's never done
- 4:35Speaker 3: that throughout his career. He will never do that in
- 4:37Speaker 3: his career. He is going to hold onto the ball
- 4:40Speaker 3: too long because he's not quick to process. That's not
- 4:42Speaker 3: part of his game that I think is excelled throughout
- 4:45Speaker 3: his career. But there are so many strengths to take
- 4:48Speaker 3: away from, and I kind of describe it like this,
- 4:50Speaker 3: like I can live with the play to play in
- 4:53Speaker 3: consistency as long as they're hitting the big play, because
- 4:56Speaker 3: that's how you make up for it. Yeah, maybe if
- 4:57Speaker 3: you're not hitting five straight ten yard passes, the problem
- 5:01Speaker 3: or the good thing is like you can hit that
- 5:02Speaker 3: one fifty yard pass and that really makes up for
- 5:05Speaker 3: all of it. Yeah, So as long as Sjalen Hurts
- 5:06Speaker 3: is coming up with the explosive plays, and you're able
- 5:08Speaker 3: to do that with a wide receiver like a J
- 5:10Speaker 3: Brown and DeVante Smith. It doesn't really I hate to
- 5:13Speaker 3: say that it doesn't matter, but it's what makes Jalen
- 5:15Speaker 3: Hurts good. It's why you pay him the money. It's
- 5:17Speaker 3: why he's a fringe top ten or potentially top ten quarterback.
- 5:20Speaker 3: However you want to view that, I think it's close,
- 5:22Speaker 3: but he's still a quarterback worth paying and a quarterback
- 5:25Speaker 3: if that's good. You know, Flawed does not mean bad.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Flawed just means he's just not great in some key areas,
- 5:31Speaker 3: but other areas he's great at and that's what makes
- 5:34Speaker 3: me a good quarterback in the Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Absolutely, Look we said on our postgame show too, and
- 5:38Speaker 2: just want to get your feedback on this. It seems
- 5:40Speaker 2: like this Eagles team in the offense in general, is
- 5:43Speaker 2: really becoming just more run based.
- 5:46Speaker 1: It's run first.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Basically, they have the opportunity and there is consistency in
- 5:51Speaker 2: terms of the explosive plays from this team that in
- 5:54Speaker 2: fact lead the league in terms of explosive plays. However,
- 5:58Speaker 2: when they try to get the passing game going, try
- 6:00Speaker 2: to be a pass first team it just doesn't work.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And I'm wondering in.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Today's day and age in the NFL if that's going
- 6:06Speaker 2: to be a recipe for success during the course of
- 6:08Speaker 2: the end of the season when we're looking at certain
- 6:10Speaker 2: divisional opponents they're going to be taking on, as well
- 6:13Speaker 2: as what could potentially happen in the playoffs. I'm not
- 6:15Speaker 2: one hundred percent sure. I just wanted to bounce that
- 6:18Speaker 2: off of you, because again, they are a run first team.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I think at this point, yeah, they should be with
- 6:22Speaker 3: the way that they're built offensive line, even the quarterback
- 6:25Speaker 3: can run. Sekwon Barkley obviously is an amazing running back.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I think they are built to run. So they are
- 6:29Speaker 3: a run first team, and you know, all teams are
- 6:31Speaker 3: built different. I don't think all teams should be run first.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I think the first one teams that work pass first.
- 6:36Speaker 3: But the thing is, what you're trying to do is
- 6:38Speaker 3: just kind of ease things up for the other side.
- 6:40Speaker 3: So I think what the Eagles do well as they
- 6:42Speaker 3: run the ball well, and maybe they don't have play action,
- 6:44Speaker 3: but they can still bring guys into the box and
- 6:46Speaker 3: then all of a sudden you have one on one
- 6:47Speaker 3: with Aja Brown fourth to three was a really good
- 6:49Speaker 3: example of that. Yes, a day Brown gets wide open,
- 6:51Speaker 3: he has one on one coverage, Jalen Hurts throws an
- 6:53Speaker 3: absolute dime. And that came off of a fourth and
- 6:56Speaker 3: three where the Giants are probably expecting, Hey, this is
- 6:59Speaker 3: a team that runs the ball. We have to key
- 7:01Speaker 3: on Jalen Hurts as a runner. We have to key
- 7:04Speaker 3: on Saquon Barkley as a runner. And when you do that,
- 7:06Speaker 3: then you leave guys one on one like AJ Brown,
- 7:08Speaker 3: and that works. So I think it just it works
- 7:10Speaker 3: in tandems. It's the only thing you're trying to figure
- 7:12Speaker 3: out as a team and find the identity of what
- 7:14Speaker 3: can we do in tandem that makes each thing work.
- 7:17Speaker 3: And I think for the Eagles it is it's run first,
- 7:19Speaker 3: run the ball first, and then use kind of your
- 7:22Speaker 3: passing game off of that. I think the Eagles have
- 7:24Speaker 3: worked in a different way. I think in twenty twenty two,
- 7:27Speaker 3: to me, they were more pass first, absolutely, and then
- 7:29Speaker 3: they would run the ball late in the game. I
- 7:31Speaker 3: don't think that should be the case for this team.
- 7:33Speaker 3: It seems like to me they need to work off
- 7:35Speaker 3: the running game a little bit more.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I would absolutely agree with you, but I want
- 7:39Speaker 2: to stick with the NFC East, John, as we're moving
- 7:41Speaker 2: ahead here. The Washington Commanders are playing really good football.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Marcus Mariot even had to come into the game this
- 7:48Speaker 2: week and take over, and they still murdered the Panthers.
- 7:51Speaker 2: And yes, again I understand it's Carolina Panthers, the worst
- 7:54Speaker 2: for nothing in like the beginning of the third exactly,
- 7:57Speaker 2: just a terrible football team, terrible football team. But I
- 8:00Speaker 2: mean they're leading the NFC East at this point. Do
- 8:04Speaker 2: you think the Washington Commanders are for real or do
- 8:06Speaker 2: you think they may falter down the stretch?
- 8:08Speaker 1: What are your thoughts?
- 8:10Speaker 3: I mean that's a bit of a difficult question because
- 8:11Speaker 3: I don't know if they're for real in this way.
- 8:13Speaker 3: But in terms of the NFC East, when you compare
- 8:16Speaker 3: them to the rest of the East, yes, I think
- 8:18Speaker 3: they're right there with the Eagles and the Cowboys. I
- 8:20Speaker 3: think the Cowboys, to me, they don't have the offense.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I don't know what it is. I think it might
- 8:25Speaker 3: be Mark Mike McCarthy getting a little bit stale. Yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 3: other offensive line has always been great. They don't have
- 8:29Speaker 3: a running game whatsoever at all, and it relies on
- 8:32Speaker 3: Dak Prescott a whole heck of a lot too much.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I don't care that he's making all that money. You
- 8:36Speaker 3: need to help him a little bit in the running game,
- 8:38Speaker 3: and they don't. To me, Dallas like kind of gets
- 8:40Speaker 3: out of the picture a little bit, and so to me,
- 8:43Speaker 3: it be comes between the Eagles and the Commanders. And
- 8:45Speaker 3: the Commanders they're good. And Jayden Daniels I liked, I voted.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I'm a Heisman voter. I voted for Jadan Daniels who
- 8:51Speaker 3: win the Heisman. I've loved them. I've been talking about
- 8:53Speaker 3: him as a Heisman Trophy candidate for a long time
- 8:56Speaker 3: last year, and then he eventually won it. And now
- 8:58Speaker 3: he's kind of brought that into the NFL. And a
- 9:01Speaker 3: lot of the good things that he did, deep ball throwing,
- 9:03Speaker 3: accurate throwing, very fundamentally sound, also a really great athlete.
- 9:08Speaker 3: All those things have translated to the NFL. The one
- 9:10Speaker 3: thing I worry about with Washington, though, is eventually Cliff
- 9:13Speaker 3: Kingsbury's whatever he changed within his offense, is it going
- 9:16Speaker 3: to get figured out? Because once Kingsbury got figured out
- 9:19Speaker 3: in Arizona, and it happened like after one season, right,
- 9:23Speaker 3: things started to unrival fast because the offense wasn't good
- 9:25Speaker 3: enough and diverse enough. I think now though Cliff Kingsbury
- 9:28Speaker 3: has learned from some mistakes, the teams already kind of
- 9:30Speaker 3: have an idea of what he does. And as the
- 9:32Speaker 3: weeks go on, I know Jane Daniels is playing great,
- 9:35Speaker 3: but eventually through some of the things that Kingsbury is
- 9:37Speaker 3: doing specifically start to get figured out. And that's where
- 9:40Speaker 3: I kind of go. I don't know if this Washington
- 9:41Speaker 3: team is ready for all of that. In year number
- 9:43Speaker 3: one with Jane Daniels, I think.
- 9:46Speaker 2: You make some great points there because you look at
- 9:49Speaker 2: this commander's team and certainly they have a history of
- 9:51Speaker 2: just faltering even when they get on a little bit
- 9:54Speaker 2: of a run. Heck, even with Taylor Heinike, they were
- 9:56Speaker 2: on a little bit of a run here and there,
- 9:58Speaker 2: and it just faltered at the end, and was organizations
- 10:01Speaker 2: and certain teams they just seem to have that curse
- 10:04Speaker 2: around them. And next up within our conversation, here is
- 10:08Speaker 2: the New York Jets in that same Vein my.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Gosh, they just fired their head coach.
- 10:13Speaker 2: They are gonna be getting Son Reddick onto the field
- 10:15Speaker 2: sooner rather than later. Here they just acquired DeVante Adams
- 10:19Speaker 2: from the Raiders and they're still having major issues after
- 10:23Speaker 2: just getting absolutely destroyed by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Russell
- 10:26Speaker 2: Wilson last night. I feel like they're a very young
- 10:30Speaker 2: team and also a very old team in certain ways,
- 10:33Speaker 2: and it's all kind of meshing together just not producing
- 10:36Speaker 2: the results that they want. I look, I thought John
- 10:39Speaker 2: that the Jets would be competing for a division title
- 10:42Speaker 2: this year before the season started. That's looking like a
- 10:45Speaker 2: very long shot at this point. What are your feelings
- 10:47Speaker 2: on where the Jets are at and where they're going
- 10:50Speaker 2: to need to or what they're gonna need to do
- 10:52Speaker 2: in fact to get out from under the under this
- 10:54Speaker 2: curse that they've been under for some time.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know how they do it this season.
- 10:59Speaker 3: It just seems like with every new fix becomes a
- 11:03Speaker 3: new problem. I think Robert Sala bying him. I get it.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I understand they weren't playing well, maybe some coaching decisions
- 11:09Speaker 3: in game that it didn't do well, but their defense
- 11:11Speaker 3: immediately regressed as soon as Robert Sala went and Sala
- 11:15Speaker 3: under with the Jets was one of the best defenses
- 11:17Speaker 3: in the league for like a few years, and that's
- 11:20Speaker 3: with really terrible offensive play, not helping them out and
- 11:23Speaker 3: playing complimentary football, and he was still able to have
- 11:25Speaker 3: some really great defensive numbers. So that immediately regresses and
- 11:28Speaker 3: here comes DeVante Adams. But then the offense kind of
- 11:31Speaker 3: doesn't know what it's doing and it's still a little
- 11:33Speaker 3: bit like doesn't have an identity. Is maybe running a
- 11:36Speaker 3: little bit more through Aaron Rodgers when it should be
- 11:39Speaker 3: going through Breeze Hall. But they get Devanta Adams, so
- 11:41Speaker 3: they need to throw the ball to Devonte Adams and
- 11:43Speaker 3: Garrett Wilson because those are two impactful players. Like it
- 11:45Speaker 3: just they're trying to fix things rapidly and quickly, and
- 11:49Speaker 3: I understand why because they have a forty something year
- 11:51Speaker 3: old quarterback that's probably not going to be playing in
- 11:53Speaker 3: the next year or two, so they have to do
- 11:55Speaker 3: something now. The problem is, though, like you didn't, you
- 11:58Speaker 3: didn't have everything ready to go set up for Aaron
- 12:01Speaker 3: Rodgers to step in now and for that team to
- 12:03Speaker 3: be good. Tampa Bay was ready. I know, maybe there
- 12:06Speaker 3: are some things Tampa Bay didn't have, and you can
- 12:07Speaker 3: look back, like the hindsight is twenty twenty. I know
- 12:09Speaker 3: they won a Super Bowl. So I'm going to see
- 12:11Speaker 3: the team was good, that team was ready though, that
- 12:13Speaker 3: team had a good offense, that team had a good identity,
- 12:15Speaker 3: that team had a good veteran head coach at the
- 12:17Speaker 3: time as well, with Bruce Arians. There are a lot
- 12:20Speaker 3: of things so like and even Todd Bowles was the
- 12:21Speaker 3: defensive coordinator, like they had an established defense too, Like
- 12:24Speaker 3: everything was set up that Tom Brady could step in
- 12:26Speaker 3: and things be fine. The Jets were not ready for that,
- 12:29Speaker 3: and so they quickly accelerated a process of team building
- 12:32Speaker 3: that they didn't need to accelerate, but they had to
- 12:35Speaker 3: because of the age of the quarterback and the quarterback
- 12:37Speaker 3: that they got, and they weren't ready for it, and
- 12:39Speaker 3: they ended up making bad move after bad move, And
- 12:41Speaker 3: now they're trying to fix it all in just a
- 12:44Speaker 3: few weeks, and as we see, it's not that easy
- 12:46Speaker 3: and things take time, and there aren't a such thing
- 12:50Speaker 3: as an easy fix in the NFL. And so for
- 12:52Speaker 3: the Jets, I don't know if it's ever gonna work
- 12:53Speaker 3: with Rogers. I just think it became a problem once
- 12:57Speaker 3: he came here that they weren't ready for it. And
- 12:59Speaker 3: now it seemed like that They're probably never going to be.
- 13:02Speaker 2: A very interesting phrase. There's no easy fix in the NFL.
- 13:05Speaker 2: We know that as observers, and I would venture to
- 13:08Speaker 2: say a lot of front offices in management understand that too.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Why the Jets seven come to understand that? We may
- 13:15Speaker 2: never know. But I wanted to move the conversation along here,
- 13:19Speaker 2: John talking about some intriguing teams in this NFL league
- 13:24Speaker 2: right now. For me, the Packers are one of the
- 13:26Speaker 2: more intriguing teams in the league right now. Young quarterback
- 13:30Speaker 2: in Jordan Love that is still developing. You have receivers
- 13:33Speaker 2: who aren't necessarily the most dominant or even the most
- 13:36Speaker 2: well known. Same with their defense, yet they're five and
- 13:40Speaker 2: two in the season right now. They're taking care of business,
- 13:43Speaker 2: with the exception of losing the first game of the
- 13:45Speaker 2: season against Philadelphia Eagles.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Got to put that in there.
- 13:47Speaker 2: But I'm finding the Packers to be one of the
- 13:49Speaker 2: more intriguing teams in this league, again because of their
- 13:53Speaker 2: youth and because you know, there aren't the biggest names
- 13:56Speaker 2: in the NFL on that team. I'm wondering which NFL
- 13:58Speaker 2: team has you most intrigued right now?
- 14:00Speaker 1: And why?
- 14:02Speaker 3: Well, I think because of how quickly they started, like
- 14:04Speaker 3: Minnesota just kind of gets forgotten about a little bit
- 14:07Speaker 3: because green Bay is starting to get healthy Geordan Love's back,
- 14:10Speaker 3: and so the conversation becomes more of like, Wow, that
- 14:12Speaker 3: team was really good without Jordan Love, and now they
- 14:14Speaker 3: get Jordan Love back, and look how good he's been.
- 14:16Speaker 3: So a lot of the tension goes to him. But
- 14:18Speaker 3: Minnesota should be getting all the attention. Still. That was
- 14:20Speaker 3: a really tough game that they played against Detroit, and
- 14:23Speaker 3: they probably should have won that game, could have won
- 14:25Speaker 3: that game, but they were competitive in it. And with
- 14:28Speaker 3: the Detroit team that I thought looked like the NFC's best,
- 14:31Speaker 3: maybe the NFL's best in the last two weeks because
- 14:33Speaker 3: of the consistency, efficiency of the offense and Jared Goff
- 14:37Speaker 3: specifically with Ben Johnson. But Minnesota played them tough, Like
- 14:41Speaker 3: that's a team and everybody just, you know, points a quarterback.
- 14:43Speaker 3: But is the quarterback good enough? Is that a quarterback
- 14:46Speaker 3: that can take you to a Super Bowl? He's a
- 14:47Speaker 3: backup essentially? I get all that. I get all that.
- 14:50Speaker 3: That's a Minnesota team though, that has gone to an
- 14:51Speaker 3: NFC championship game with case Keenum Like that you can
- 14:55Speaker 3: get there with quarterbacks as long as they have the
- 14:57Speaker 3: structure and the right kind of offense around them. Sam
- 15:00Speaker 3: Donald fits it like a glove, this Kevin O'Connell play
- 15:03Speaker 3: action style of offense, and damn there's a lot of
- 15:05Speaker 3: talent there. Aaron Jones is still very good, justin Jefferson,
- 15:08Speaker 3: Jordan Addison, and Sam Donald seems to be clicking with
- 15:11Speaker 3: all of those guys. So yeah, I think because of
- 15:13Speaker 3: their strong start, like not at the NFL just moves quickly.
- 15:17Speaker 3: So they're not the biggest storyline now through seven weeks,
- 15:20Speaker 3: but I think they still should be after that game
- 15:22Speaker 3: against Detroit and the other team I want to just
- 15:24Speaker 3: kind of mention as well. Buffalo. They get Amari Cooper
- 15:26Speaker 3: at the top of the AFC East, Like it's just
- 15:29Speaker 3: everything is talked about with you know, the New York
- 15:31Speaker 3: Jets being bad, but then in the AFC, you know,
- 15:33Speaker 3: Kansas City obviously is going to be talked about Houston,
- 15:36Speaker 3: but Buffalo just quietly gets a pretty good wide receiver
- 15:39Speaker 3: of Mark Cooper Josh Allen. Since they got to Mark Cooper,
- 15:42Speaker 3: that one game in Week seven is the best game
- 15:45Speaker 3: he's played probably since like Week two or three, because
- 15:48Speaker 3: the last few weeks have not been kind to Josh
- 15:49Speaker 3: Allen and immediately three hundred yards two touchdowns and they
- 15:53Speaker 3: win thirty four and they score thirty four points against Tennessee.
- 15:56Speaker 3: So Buffalo is also an intriguing team, mostly just because
- 16:00Speaker 3: with all the off season stuff, they weren't looked at
- 16:02Speaker 3: as a highly touted team and even now, I just
- 16:05Speaker 3: don't think they're looked at as like one of the
- 16:06Speaker 3: AOC's best when clearly, to me, as long as Josh
- 16:09Speaker 3: Allen is there, they are.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Absolutely again, Folks talking to John Jansen from Fox Sports

- 17:29Speaker 2: So getting back to the NFL talk here, let's talk
- 17:32Speaker 2: about which teams may actually be a fraud this season here, John,
- 17:36Speaker 2: So for me, I think and they I mentioned them earlier.
- 17:39Speaker 2: They took care of business against the Jets last night.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Steelers. They are up there for me as one
- 17:43Speaker 2: of those teams that could really easily crap the bed here.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Their defense has basically amazingly enough. You know that their
- 17:50Speaker 2: defense has been ranked bottom five in the league this season,
- 17:54Speaker 2: and bottom of the barrel. Defenses in this league, as
- 17:56Speaker 2: we know, tend to kind of crumble down the stretch.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Which NFL team do you think may be a fraud
- 18:02Speaker 2: this season? I'm going with the Steelers. I know my
- 18:05Speaker 2: Pittsburgh friends are gonna be mad at me for that,
- 18:06Speaker 2: but still I'm thinking it's the Steelers.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Who do you think? Man? We talked about Washington to
- 18:12Speaker 3: Washington kind of comes out a little bit for me,
- 18:14Speaker 3: just because defensively, I'm just looking at things like which
- 18:17Speaker 3: unit could be, you know, down the stretch a little
- 18:19Speaker 3: bit of a problem for these teams in Washington. To me, defensively,
- 18:22Speaker 3: I don't think they're all that strong, so Washington could
- 18:24Speaker 3: become a bit of a problem. The other one is
- 18:26Speaker 3: also Atlanta. I think Atlanta's defense is very bad too,
- 18:29Speaker 3: so for as good as good as Kirk Cousins has
- 18:31Speaker 3: been there within the NFC South Division race, and they
- 18:35Speaker 3: beat Tampa Bay as well, which Tampa Bay's at the
- 18:37Speaker 3: top of the division right now. And they beat Tampa Bay,
- 18:40Speaker 3: but that was in overtime and they gave up a
- 18:41Speaker 3: lot of points and Tampa Bay probably should have won
- 18:44Speaker 3: that game. But right now they're just getting very good
- 18:46Speaker 3: quarterback play out of Kirk Cousins. They're not going to
- 18:48Speaker 3: be getting three hundred yard five touchdown games out of
- 18:51Speaker 3: Kirk Cousins every week. Then they go up against Seattle.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Seattle didn't really have that great of an offensive game,
- 18:55Speaker 3: and they still gave up thirty four points. A bit
- 18:57Speaker 3: of a weird game, A lot of weird stuff happened
- 18:59Speaker 3: in that one, but still gave up thirty four. It's
- 19:01Speaker 3: a defense that I don't trust, so I think, to me,
- 19:04Speaker 3: I look at those things, especially defense I want to
- 19:06Speaker 3: look at and Washington and Atlanta both have defenses that
- 19:09Speaker 3: I would have major concerns about once they get later
- 19:12Speaker 3: on in this season.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I think those are good picks right there for sure.
- 19:14Speaker 2: And to close out our discussion here, John, I feel
- 19:18Speaker 2: like we're seeing yet again another defensive NFL season, kind
- 19:23Speaker 2: of like we did last year. Seems like a lot
- 19:24Speaker 2: of defenses catching up to the offensive game, and where
- 19:27Speaker 2: the offensive passing game certainly has been going over the
- 19:30Speaker 2: past maybe ten years or so. I mean, there aren't
- 19:34Speaker 2: too too many ridiculously scored games anymore. That we are
- 19:38Speaker 2: seeing some high point totals that we're seeing every now
- 19:42Speaker 2: and again, but not like we did maybe a few
- 19:44Speaker 2: years ago or so. Seems like defensive coaching again is
- 19:47Speaker 2: really catching up to the offenses around the league. And
- 19:49Speaker 2: it makes me wonder how the offenses will then adapt
- 19:54Speaker 2: to this defensive change. I'm wondering, have you thought about this?
- 19:57Speaker 2: What are your thoughts here?
- 19:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I definitely have, And you know, there's been a
- 20:01Speaker 3: lot of talk about this as well throughout the years,
- 20:03Speaker 3: because offenses are changing. What was supposed to be a
- 20:06Speaker 3: league that was going heavy towards passing all of a
- 20:08Speaker 3: sudden becomes very conservative passing. It's a lot of the
- 20:11Speaker 3: line of screaments, it's a lot of short passes. So
- 20:14Speaker 3: there is a lot made of like what our NFL
- 20:16Speaker 3: offense is now, how do they end up becoming more explosive?
- 20:19Speaker 3: And the thing to me is always just balance. I
- 20:21Speaker 3: think you are going to need the run game. Teams
- 20:23Speaker 3: and neglected the running game for a long time. And
- 20:25Speaker 3: I'm one guy too, Like I get that because even
- 20:28Speaker 3: in twenty twenty two, everybody's talking about, you know, the
- 20:31Speaker 3: running game for the Eagles running game, like, well, you're
- 20:32Speaker 3: gonna need to pass the ball, and Hurts was awesome
- 20:34Speaker 3: in the Super Bowl and so like, the passing game
- 20:36Speaker 3: was a big deal for the Eagles and they needed
- 20:38Speaker 3: that part of their game. And I think, you know,
- 20:40Speaker 3: passing is obviously the end all be all for a
- 20:42Speaker 3: lot of offenses. The running game helps out a lot
- 20:45Speaker 3: with that, and I think good teams were seeing now
- 20:46Speaker 3: Detroit's a good example of that. Sonic and Knuckles with
- 20:50Speaker 3: Jamior Gibbs and Dave Montgomery had to say the nickname
- 20:53Speaker 3: because it's great. Love love those games. Ye, but yeah,
- 20:56Speaker 3: Detroit is running the ball well. Aaron Jones in Minnesota
- 20:59Speaker 3: is running the very well. Washington has a solid running
- 21:01Speaker 3: game that they're getting. The Eagles have a really good
- 21:03Speaker 3: running game. Baltimore's offense looks much better with Derek Henry
- 21:07Speaker 3: running the ball for them in a healthy running back
- 21:08Speaker 3: because I know JK. Dobbins was good, but he was
- 21:11Speaker 3: injured a lot of the time. It comes Derrick Henry
- 21:13Speaker 3: and he's been great. So yeah, I think it's just
- 21:16Speaker 3: offenses are gonna have to be more diverse this. This
- 21:18Speaker 3: can't just be you're gonna be pass heavy. You're gonna
- 21:22Speaker 3: have you're gonna be spread out. You're gonna have to
- 21:24Speaker 3: be diverse. Like teams are gonna have to play twelve personnel,
- 21:26Speaker 3: they will have to split out wide. You know. I
- 21:28Speaker 3: think you play to the strengths of your quarterback obviously,
- 21:31Speaker 3: and you play to the strengths of what your team's
- 21:32Speaker 3: personnel is. But I think diversity in the offense is
- 21:35Speaker 3: really a big thing. I think we see that with
- 21:37Speaker 3: Houston as well. Detroit we see that a lot, Minnesota
- 21:40Speaker 3: we see that a lot, and now I think we're
- 21:41Speaker 3: starting to see it a little bit more with the Eagles.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Not as much as I would like to see same here. Yeah,
- 21:45Speaker 3: but diversity now is becoming a big thing, I think
- 21:48Speaker 3: for the NFL, because you're gonna need to either play
- 21:50Speaker 3: smash boun at the times you're gonna need to throw,
- 21:52Speaker 3: but you're gonna need to give teams a lot of
- 21:54Speaker 3: different looks because teams in the passing game, specifically, they're
- 21:57Speaker 3: doing very well stopping.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Great discussion about this NFL season and various storylines. Again, folks,
