- 1:23Let's get David Eicholt in here. David Trenton Ken, thanks for
- 1:26coming on. There's libel to be a little bit
- 1:27of a delay as we are on the road, but good to talk to you.
- 1:30David Eicholt, how are you? Thanks for doing this.
- 1:34Yeah, good to be join you guys. It's definitely things are
- 1:36starting to ramp up a little bit and we learned a lot last night
- 1:40about the women's and obviously tonight with the men's game.
- 1:43And I don't know about you 2, like I think Iowa has a pretty
- 1:46decent team, but I was a little bit surprised that the line went
- 1:49down to like 10 1/2. It did go back up to 11 1/2 last
- 1:53time I checked, but I'm still slightly surprised at how where
- 1:57this line is kind of at for hanging into tonight.
- 2:01Surprised in that you think it should be higher that it should
- 2:03be lower. I, I think it should be higher.
- 2:06I think Iowa State's the second best team in the country right
- 2:10now. I, I have Michigan as my number
- 2:11one team. I have Iowa is my two.
- 2:14I have Duke as my 3, in Arizona as my 4.
- 2:19That's rarefied error, David I Colt and it is moving up a
- 2:21little bit. It's now 12.
- 2:23It's Caesar. So we're starting to see some
- 2:24twelves in the market. Yeah, the win over Purdue was
- 2:27absolutely eye opening. So let's save them in for a
- 2:30minute. Let's just ladies first recap
- 2:32what we saw last night. I saw a game that I thought was
- 2:36going to get away from Iowa in the third quarter.
- 2:38Trent and I yesterday spent the day.
- 2:40At least I tried to convince them that this one's got a
- 2:42chance to be an all timer. I love both of the rosters.
- 2:46I love the match ups in the game and thought it had a chance to
- 2:48be really good. As it turned out, I was a very
- 2:51close basketball game. Both teams really struggling
- 2:53with their free throws. But to Iowa's credit, they got
- 2:56back into it. To Iowa State's credit, they had
- 2:59enough of the lead and were able to hold on and and get another
- 3:02win in the Seihawk series. David.
- 3:04Yeah. I mean, I think there's two
- 3:06things. One, I think 2 of the top 13 or
- 3:0914 teams in the country reside in the state of Iowa.
- 3:12I think this has a chance to be Bill Fennelly's best team that
- 3:15he's had in his entire career because compared to last year,
- 3:19the Iowa State team, like Audie Crooks had 31 last year.
- 3:23But in the fourth quarter she was shut down because Iowa
- 3:26realized, you know, they didn't have the help on the perimeter
- 3:29that they needed to really have a chance.
- 3:31That and that's why Iowa ended up winning.
- 3:32They started fronting Audie. They really couldn't do that
- 3:36this year because of all the other complimentary pieces
- 3:39around them. But at the same time, the one
- 3:41good quality, you know, a good quality about Jan Jensen's team
- 3:44is the fact that they never quit.
- 3:47That game could have gotten even more unravelled after they were
- 3:49down 17 and they found a way to battle back and have a chance
- 3:53with under 45 seconds to go. I think it was a Sweet 16 Elite
- 3:578 out caliber game. I doubt both teams have a chance
- 4:01to do pretty well throughout the remainder of the season and have
- 4:04a shot at doing some damage come March.
- 4:07But I left more encouraged about Iowa than I was heading into the
- 4:11game. Look, I mean, Iowa had a couple
- 4:13of the younger players struggle, but for Iowa to battle back in
- 4:17that hostile atmosphere that they experienced, because, you
- 4:20know, I said this leading into the game, guys, this was the
- 4:23first hostile environment that Iowa has played in.
- 4:26Yeah, they were in Florida. But let's be real, Iowa's going
- 4:29to be the home crowd favorite and at least 75% of the games
- 4:32this year. And that's just because of the
- 4:34brand that they've continued to build.
- 4:36That ain't happening in Ames. Everybody hates Iowa, it names
- 4:40Iowa, right? So I think the fact that Iowa
- 4:43responded in such a way despite a behind fouling out, them
- 4:47getting in foul trouble, chit chat, right, Really emerging on
- 4:50the scene. I'm pretty encouraged about what
- 4:52I saw from the women last night. You mentioned in passing there
- 4:57off the bench, Stremlow just she's really inconsistent at a
- 5:01deal. Same thing.
- 5:02I think she's going to play well against maybe some lesser
- 5:04opponents, but I don't think she's quite ready for elite
- 5:07level competition like she saw last night.
- 5:10That leads me to Emily Rodriguez.
- 5:11Fill us in on that injury. She's got some bad habits she
- 5:14needs to break from her time at UCF, but I think there's a lot
- 5:17of upside to her game and certainly a player that can
- 5:20create herself something that outside of chitchat, they just
- 5:22don't have a whole lot on the roster.
- 5:24What can you tell us about her injury and maybe ironing out
- 5:27some of those deficiencies because think she could be a
- 5:29really important player for them?
- 5:32No, and I don't disagree with you whatsoever because I do
- 5:35think Iowa this year, the roster, they have players that
- 5:38can at least somewhat create their own shot.
- 5:40Like if you give the ball to a behind at the post, she's going
- 5:43to be able to make something happen.
- 5:44For the most part. She can hit mid range shots
- 5:46right, chitchat right is better than any of us could have
- 5:50expected. I think like I expected a little
- 5:52bit of a jump from what she had last year, but she's looking
- 5:55like she's she was an absolute steal out of the portal and
- 5:58she's saying 3 at a high rate. But for Emily Rodriguez, yes,
- 6:02she has to break some bad habits.
- 6:03Remember, I think we we talked after she dropped eighteen in
- 6:06her first game or something and I said, look, you can tell she's
- 6:09a shot creator, but are those really good shots if the shot
- 6:12isn't falling and things kind of leveled out over the next couple
- 6:16of games? But for right now, she's
- 6:17battling a back issue. I think it's something that
- 6:20could potentially linger, but I think it's going to be a true
- 6:23day-to-day, game by game feel at this point.
- 6:25I'm not going to say it's going to be something that that's
- 6:27super long term. Very curious what Jan Jensen
- 6:31says about her if she ends up playing against Lindenwood or if
- 6:34they're just going to arrest her then try to bring her back
- 6:36against Yukon. But I'd also argue that's a heck
- 6:38of a way to try to bring back Emily Rodriguez against the best
- 6:41team in the country and I think the best player in the country
- 6:44and fair strong. If you don't know how her game
- 6:47is or you haven't watched her play, yeah, you need to do that
- 6:49because she is an absolutely dominant player on both sides of
- 6:53the ball. But you're right, man.
- 6:55I mean, in terms of Emily, like, that's another player where if
- 6:57the shot clock's winding down, she can make something happen.
- 7:00She has a lot of good fundamentals, has to continue to
- 7:03buy into the defensive side of the ball.
- 7:05But there's a lot of upside to her game.
- 7:07And I think it's very clear to see why everybody on that
- 7:10coaching staff is so excited about her.
- 7:13Miller and Condon broadcasting live with the variety 2 Days of
- 7:16Compassion Radio. Thon more about that coming up.
- 7:19David Icult is joining us now as we take a look back at the
- 7:22Cyhawk women from last night. And now on to the Cyhawk men.
- 7:26David, there's going to be a lot of teams that when they play
- 7:29Iowa are going to plug in that Michigan State tape and see how
- 7:33Izo and company were able to, you know, to limit Bennett
- 7:35Sturtz as they did. I I don't know if this is if
- 7:39this is A1 size fits all, if if every coach is going to be able
- 7:43to, you know, employ that strategy, let alone pull it off.
- 7:47But as you know, watching Iowa State and you just said you
- 7:49think they're the second best team in the country.
- 7:51And I agree with you, Michigan, Iowa State both rarefied error.
- 7:56If as Bennett Sturtz go, is that how Iowa goes?
- 7:59If they are able to limit him tonight, how does Iowa keep this
- 8:02game close? Yeah, I mean, again, I don't
- 8:06think the Michigan State thing was A1 size fits all.
- 8:09Yeah, they frustrated Ben starts by also think that was more of
- 8:12an indictment on the inability to get through the 1st action of
- 8:16Iowa's offense against Michigan State.
- 8:18Like if you rewatch the tape, everybody was standing around
- 8:21once the screen and roll or the Verajal screen was not working.
- 8:24And I knew it was just sort of Bennett searched being like, all
- 8:26right, well, I guess I got to go do something.
- 8:29I would almost equate it to Lucy Olson.
- 8:31Last year. Everybody talked about how Lucy
- 8:33Olson shot the ball so many times last year.
- 8:35You know why she shot it? It's because she was the only
- 8:38one that could go out there and create a shot, right?
- 8:41And somebody has to shoot the ball.
- 8:43At least that's how I saw it last year.
- 8:45I think Iowa definitely is going to have some pieces.
- 8:48I think that they're really good pressure, bad search.
- 8:50I think Payman Lipsy, you know, God help Payman Lipsy from this
- 8:54standpoint. I don't think I've ever seen
- 8:56that dude play a game, a healthy game of basketball in his life
- 9:00because he's always battling through something.
- 9:02I'd love to see him if he was actually 100% healthy because he
- 9:05is a really good player. I think they're going to really
- 9:08possess, you know, they're really going to attack Bennett
- 9:10search starting in the half court line.
- 9:12I think they're going to provide a lot of on ball pressure.
- 9:14I think they're going to challenge Cam Maniao to be able
- 9:16to make some moves in the post. I think they're going to try to
- 9:19take away Iowa screen roll action and force that starts
- 9:23into some ISO basketball. And if that happens, I think
- 9:26that's where it gets dangerous. But at the same time, I think if
- 9:29you go back to the Michigan State game, I don't know about
- 9:31you guys, I could kind of tell Iowa.
- 9:34Some of the players from Drake were a little bit overwhelmed by
- 9:36the hostile atmosphere because look, the zones, no easy place
- 9:40to go in there and play. The Breslin Center is absolutely
- 9:43elite when it comes to college basketball atmospheres.
- 9:46I'll tell you what, they go into Hilton Coliseum with the same
- 9:48kind of wide eyed, you know, wide eyed look like deer and
- 9:51headlight. You know, we we all we all know
- 9:54Iowa State's capable of ripping off a bunch of threes and
- 9:56getting this thing ugly early. So I think it's Iowa playing
- 10:00their game. I think it's getting through
- 10:01their offensive strategy. And I ultimately think it's just
- 10:04trying to really focus on that perimeter defense because if you
- 10:07let Manshilovich get hot, if you let their big three really get
- 10:10going, that's when it's dangerous.
- 10:13Because with Iowa style of play, if Iowa State goes up 15, it's
- 10:17going to feel like it's about 25 to 30.
- 10:20The confounding case of Brendan Hassan, he doesn't get off the
- 10:24bench in a blah win against Maryland.
- 10:26He played 7 minutes, hit a three pointer against Michigan State,
- 10:30didn't play in the second-half of that game.
- 10:33What's going on here? A guy that I'd always banged up
- 10:36during the summer time, but he's working his way back.
- 10:38Certainly you feel like to full health what's happening there?
- 10:41And take us into after the game where, you know, we've heard
- 10:45some really good things where you go back to their tournament
- 10:48in California and he said keep Cooper in there.
- 10:51He's playing well, but then you get this part and he doesn't
- 10:53even play against Maryland. Just a lot of head scratches
- 10:55right now. Yeah, and I'm still kind of near
- 10:58the top of that list because you go back to preseason, I think
- 11:01you know our our colleague in French head Licego said the same
- 11:04thing like everybody had Brendan Hollison as the starting two
- 11:07guard for this team. And that that's where it gets a
- 11:10little bit complex thing to me. But I'll go back to what a
- 11:14couple of my sources said when, you know, I, I wrote a column
- 11:17about why, you know, Ben McCollum was my number one
- 11:19choice to be Iowa's head coach even before Debris ended up
- 11:22taking the Indiana job. And a couple of my sources said
- 11:26this about Ben. If you don't bleep and play
- 11:29defense, you're not playing. I think Brendan Housing gives a
- 11:32lot of really good energy off the bench.
- 11:34I think he tries to play defense, I just think combine
- 11:39that with the fact that he really isn't a driver and that
- 11:42is something that Ben McCollum has said post game when asked
- 11:45about why he isn't playing. If you can't drive and you can't
- 11:48defend, I just have a really hard time seeing how you fit in
- 11:52his system now. I also think though, it just
- 11:55depends on how the lineups would look because if you're telling
- 11:57me you can run a 3 or 4 man screen pick and pop action with
- 12:02Fulgaris, who's, you know, emerged as a good three-point
- 12:05shooter, he is a good three-point shooter with Ben
- 12:07starts and then you have Cooper Koch and Brendan Hoffman waiting
- 12:10on the wings. I don't know how you guard that,
- 12:13But I also think Iowa still waiting for Fulgaris to kind of
- 12:16get back into his groove and be that player that they thought
- 12:19they were getting. And I think that's going to be a
- 12:21big key to this team as well. I also think that that does play
- 12:25a part of it. You know, Ben McCollum, I think
- 12:27right now, and this is just my speculation, this is nothing I'm
- 12:30hearing. So to make sure that's clear, I
- 12:32just don't know. I just don't think at times Ben
- 12:35can play the line UPS that he really would like to play
- 12:38because there are certain guys not playing up to their own
- 12:40capabilities right now. And I think it's going to be up
- 12:43to full Garris to kind of regain that swagger a little bit.
- 12:46I think Pavion Banks needs to be a little bit more consistent,
- 12:49especially with what he showed early on in the season.
- 12:52But when it comes to house and man, like, I haven't heard too
- 12:55much. If there's an injury or anything
- 12:57like that, everybody's trying to figure it out.
- 12:59But from my vantage point, I just don't think he's a good
- 13:01enough defender right now. And Cooper Koch kind of is a
- 13:05specialist to a certain extent. He's got great shooting range.
- 13:07You don't want to leave him open.
- 13:09But Cooper provides more energy on the glass.
- 13:12He can drive the basketball and he's a lot better of a defender
- 13:16than he was last year. Final couple of minutes here
- 13:19with David Eichel, 24/7 Sports hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 13:23David, Football, the practices, the bowl prep has begun.
- 13:27Any Nuggets trickling out? Are you hearing anything
- 13:30football related, David? It's just going to be really
- 13:34interesting next few weeks, man. Like everything is going to
- 13:37change by the hour it feels like.
- 13:38One of my biggest things is I'm very intrigued about how many
- 13:42players enter the portal before the bowl game or if they're
- 13:45going to go through bowl prep and then enter the transfer
- 13:48portal or announce their intention, right?
- 13:50Because there is some benefit to if you announce early, you know,
- 13:53teams across the country can be like, look, you can't
- 13:56technically contact them, but you can at least put them on top
- 13:59of your radar, do some setting and you know, the guys can kind
- 14:02of market themselves. But the guys that wait will have
- 14:04more film. I'm very curious, you know, if
- 14:08Iowa cannot just, you know, let guys go in and, you know, I know
- 14:11they want to bring in some guys different positions, but this is
- 14:14a new era. You have to retain your top
- 14:17playmakers, too. I think Iowa does a really great
- 14:20job of, you know, recruiting for culture and guys that will fit
- 14:23within the system. But I'll tell you what it can
- 14:26culture overcome a $500,000 increase from other places if
- 14:31the player can go out in the open market and go get that.
- 14:33I think that's kind of the big question.
- 14:36I do think Jeremy Hecklinski is a little bit farther ahead than
- 14:39Hank Brown as far as the starting quarterback potentially
- 14:42for next season. And I think you're also going to
- 14:44hear a lot about Rashad Godfrey taking a jump.
- 14:48And I think there's a big opportunity in the secondary as
- 14:51well. And this is just something that
- 14:52Elliot Cloth has brought up. And this is just a little teaser
- 14:55of a nugget that we put in our VIP notes this morning.
- 14:58Don't be surprised if South Dakota cornerback Shaheed
- 15:01Barrows tries to get a medical red shirt and come back to the
- 15:05Hawkeyes next season. I know he went through Senior
- 15:08Day, but he was only played in three games and he's kind of
- 15:11been battling injuries here and there throughout the season.
- 15:14We'll see if he gets that because if that happens and he
- 15:17gets another year with still Parker, I think we all know
- 15:20right now guys that there there's some room in the
- 15:22secondary for guys to emerge and kind of have that playing time.
- 15:27You know, I know some people are looking at offensive line.
- 15:29I kind of like the pieces that they have coming back.
- 15:32And here's the other part. We've seen them bring in three
- 15:34transfers. Rusty Fest, the only guy that
- 15:36played Bryce George, we anticipated he was at least
- 15:39going to be in the mix. Now, I know he had an injury in
- 15:41that first game, but sounded like he was kind of out for that
- 15:44battle for left tackle. It was down to Dozler and
- 15:46Lauken. We saw the season that he had
- 15:48and you go back to what was it, Parker, the kid that came in
- 15:51from Saginaw State, a lot of people thought he was going to
- 15:53be a tackle. He never played.
- 15:55So with the Iowa system, with what obviously the expectations
- 15:58are for Ference and and Barnett and company with that offensive
- 16:02line, is that a place unless it is just that a depth piece, it
- 16:05probably doesn't make sense just because it hasn't worked very
- 16:08well for the Iowa system. And I agree though, I think if
- 16:12you're going to go out there and get an offensive line guy, I
- 16:14think you need to have two years of eligibility, right?
- 16:17Unless you're talking like a powerful tackle that enters the
- 16:20portal that's proven right. Otherwise, I do think you need
- 16:22that piece. But the other thing is, guys,
- 16:25I'm not doubting George Barnett, like I, I said 2-3 years ago
- 16:28that you need more time. And I think, you know, Iowa has
- 16:31a strong chance to win the Joe Moore Award this year.
- 16:34The guys who have been behind the, the elite offense line that
- 16:37they have, they've been developed in the system.
- 16:40Now, yes, you know, they'll have some ugly reps here and there,
- 16:43but like I'm going to Russ Barnett development and the guys
- 16:46that they got in there, you know, Kate Peeper, I think you
- 16:49know, he if he slides over to center, I'd be interested about
- 16:52that because they've talked about him playing center at the
- 16:54next level whenever he goes to the NFL.
- 16:57And at one point he was, you know, labeled a first round
- 16:59draft pick by a couple different outlets.
- 17:01So if you're going to get that piece, I think they need multi
- 17:04multiple years of eligibility. But the same time guys, I can
- 17:07name four other positions I think you have to go after
- 17:11before you look at offensive line.
- 17:13You have to get a wider fever. I think you have to get 21
- 17:16fever, quite frankly. And by the way, two years of
- 17:19eligibility, multiple years. You need a cornerback, you need
- 17:23the defensive tackle, just somebody to help Bryce Hawthorne
- 17:26out. And I think you need an edge
- 17:27rusher, but that's that's a proven guy before you even think
- 17:31about the offensive line. And then the other part of it,
- 17:33and again, this is my speculation, what's going to
- 17:36happen in the running backroom? They have guys with multiple
- 17:39years of eligibility. Jazz Patterson returned and I
- 17:41thought he'd have a bigger role than he had.
- 17:43He didn't play much down the stretch, had to overcome an
- 17:46injury. You know, is he going to be a
- 17:47guy that enters the portal? Are they going to be able to
- 17:50retain all these guys? And if you have multiple running
- 17:52backs leave, depending on who it is, guys, I think you at least
- 17:56have to look in the portal to potentially get someone else.
- 17:59So as far as Iowa's depth on the offensive line, there's a lot of
- 18:02unproven names, but you can at least take comfort in the fact
- 18:06that they've been in the Iowa system for at least a year or
- 18:09two and they've been developing behind this elite off the group
- 18:12of offensive lineman. So that means those guys know
- 18:15what it takes to kind of reach that level.
- 18:19David Eichold, hawkeyeinsider.com, part of 24/7
- 18:22Sports. David, thanks for jumping on.
- 18:24Appreciate what you do for us. Thank you, David.
- 18:27Yeah, Thanks guys. Always appreciate talking to
- 18:29you. Yeah, as we do to you.
- 18:31Good stuff. All right, we continue on here
- 18:33at Jordan Creek Town Center. It is the variety 2 days of
- 18:36compassion radiothon. We are in day #1 and we're
- 18:39joined right now by Ivy Sprague from the from High V right,
- 18:43Director, Strategic Communications.
- 18:46Ivy, that's Trent. I'm Ken.
- 18:47Good to meet you here on the fly.
- 18:50What's your title? What do you do for this Great,
- 18:52great 'cause? This great 'cause I am the
- 18:54director of Strategic Communications, but folks over
- 18:57on The Who side know me as Ivy from Ivy, that that is my
- 19:01government name. I promise.
- 19:02Thanks, Mom. But I am just here to share the
- 19:06amazing stories of the folks at Hyvee and most importantly, why
- 19:09we're here supporting Variety, the children's charity for the
- 19:11next two days. I'm not surprised Ivy.
- 19:13Such a great Iowa company, Midwest Company and Variety.
- 19:17The fact that I read the statin just blows me away a that if
- 19:21that so many there are so many kids.
- 19:22Sadly 100,000 kids get touched by this every single year.
- 19:27The variety of Club of Iowa actually helps out benefits, but
- 19:31it's so sad that there's that many.
- 19:33It really is. And the stories we're hearing
- 19:35today just blow me away. We've been, we've been
- 19:39supporting Variety as a company since 1983.
- 19:42Good for you. And, and they're just do a
- 19:44tremendous job at meeting folks right where they are.
- 19:46The stories we've heard today, you know, folks getting gift
- 19:49cards in the emergency room, you know, as they have a, a child
- 19:52with a critical injury, it's just incredible.
- 19:54And that's why we're honored to be part of today.
- 19:56Before Trent jumps in just real quick along those lines that you
- 19:59open that door for me, we heard from a grandmother earlier and
- 20:02she mentioned there's no red tape.
- 20:04You know she absolutely within 48 hours, the family had exactly
- 20:08what they needed at their time of need.
- 20:10Yeah, because the last thing you want to do when you've got a
- 20:12child who's in pain is paperwork, right?
- 20:14They just variety to such incredible jobs just meeting the
- 20:17moment get back to you right we'll.
- 20:19Pass you along to this. No, that's no.
- 20:21We're hungry now. The gas tank's empty now.
- 20:23Yep, absolutely. With the Variety Club, another
- 20:26great thing and what they do here in the state is the fun
- 20:29stay in state. And you know, something that
- 20:31we've talked about so many times in the past is you see some of
- 20:34these big organizations, you don't know where that money is
- 20:36going. To see that when Iowans are
- 20:39spending money giving their money to help out, it's actually
- 20:41helping out Iowans. A great thing, certainly.
- 20:44Absolutely, and every dollar that's given today into variety
- 20:46any day stays right here in Iowa.
- 20:49We've actually got folks from Hyvee Construction, one of our
- 20:51companies upstairs here in the Jordan Creek Town Center
- 20:53building bicycles. And I just saw three of them go
- 20:56out the door to kids in need who are going to have a brand new
- 20:59bike this Christmas. So shout out to my Hyvee
- 21:02Construction friends. It's amazing to watch them put
- 21:05that stuff together. Bike they're doing safety checks
- 21:07and all those bikes are going to kids this Christmas.
- 21:09That's great and if you'd like to help, and we'd sure like to
- 21:11love that you'd be able to do so if you can find it in your heart
- 21:15or in your budget. 515-276-6669 That's the phone number.
- 21:20Phone lines are open right now. Phone banks open. 515-276-6669
- 21:26During our program. The good folks at Merchants
- 21:28Bonding Company, they're going to match every dollar donated
- 21:32during Miller and Condon that is going to be matched.
- 21:35Ivy final 30 seconds or so. The floor is yours.
- 21:38Awesome. Well, we're again, we're just
- 21:39honored to be part of it. We believe at Hyvee that if you
- 21:41have the ability to do good, you have the responsibility to do
- 21:45good. So for folks who are listening
- 21:46out there who have a couple extra dollars in your holiday
- 21:48budget, you couldn't find a better place to put it than with
- 21:51Variety, the children's charity. Absolutely, Ivy, nice to meet
- 21:54you. Thank you.
- 21:54Same to you. Thank you.
- 21:56I'm not sure you're here. Tomorrow we will be if you
- 21:58heard. I'm here tomorrow.
- 21:59Good stuff, Ivy from Hyvee. Hyvee from Hyvee, We'll take a
- 22:02time out. We'll get into the NFL when we
- 22:03come back. Dave Cynic and covers the
- 22:05Packers, Catherine, the Chiefs, Miller and Condon live Jordan
- 22:08great Town Center. It is the variety 2 days of
- 22:11compassion Radiothon. We'll be back after these
- 22:13messages on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:21As we broadcast live from Jordan Creek Town Center of the
- 22:24variety, 2 Days of Compassion Radiothon continues on Lucas and
- 22:28Sean for the next 4 hours. Once Trent and I get finished at
- 22:31the top of the hour here today, here tomorrow.
- 22:34Well, let's do a little NFL, shall we?
- 22:36We'll get to Nick Athen covers the Chiefs for chiefsplits.com.
- 22:40Get to him in a 5 minutes or so. But right now, Dave Sinican Zone
- 22:43coverage KFAN, our sister station in the Twin Cities,
- 22:47where he's in your #30 of Packer preview on Sunday mornings.
- 22:51Dave Trenton, Ken, there might be a little bit of a delays.
- 22:54We're on location here. Good to talk to you.
- 22:56Dave Sinican, how are you? I'm good, I'm good.
- 22:59Chiefs guy can wait there. Yesterday's news anyway, right?
- 23:03They really are, and isn't it great to say that and feel that?
- 23:05And especially a guy who roots for a team in the AFC West?
- 23:09It's been a long time coming, Dave.
- 23:11Sure it has. Big one this weekend.
- 23:13Big. One.
- 23:14Yes, Sir, It's your squad and my squad.
- 23:17You know, before we get into that just real quick, because I,
- 23:20you know, as a impartial observer as I was watching Bears
- 23:24and Packers AI came away more impressed with the Bears.
- 23:28I think they're they're legit and you'll see them a week from
- 23:31Saturday. In fact, the first of two now
- 23:33back-to-back Saturdays is that game has now been the Ravens
- 23:36game has been picked up in prime time as well on the 27th.
- 23:40But you know, Dave, when we look back at the year, some football
- 23:43games stick with you. And for me, Packers Bears at
- 23:46Lambeau Field last Sunday might be one of those games.
- 23:48What a football game. Yeah, it was it was a game that
- 23:51felt like a playoff game, and we haven't seen too many of those
- 23:55type of games between these two teams in a lot of years.
- 23:58Obviously, you think back to the 2010 NFC Championship.
- 24:01I was at that game. That was glorious.
- 24:04And then the season finale three years later when Randall Cobb on
- 24:074th down caught the touchdown. I mean, there's been so few
- 24:10games like that between these two rivals late in the season
- 24:13that mean a lot. So, yeah, I mean, football to me
- 24:15is more fun when the Bears are relevant.
- 24:18They gave signs that they're on that path and looking forward to
- 24:21a rematch here next week. Couple of injury questions for
- 24:25you, Lucas, Vanessa, he returned to practice yesterday and a
- 24:28possibility of him going as he's missed what, 7 in the last eight
- 24:31games with his injury. And then Josh Jacobs, another
- 24:34knee injury, new knee injury, just a re injuring of that knee
- 24:37that he hurt against New York a couple weeks back.
- 24:39What can you tell us about Jacobs and Van Nessa's chances
- 24:42of playing? And that's back, it appears, a
- 24:46couple weeks early with the foot injury.
- 24:48I think they're going to be really careful with him.
- 24:50I'd love to see him get some run.
- 24:52I wouldn't bet on it yet this week.
- 24:54Jacobs is the most concerning one.
- 24:56He's the only player not practicing.
- 24:58Didn't practice yesterday, didn't practice today.
- 25:00He's on the bike kind of doing his own thing and, you know,
- 25:04start to do some research on Ken's team.
- 25:06I, I noted that the one place you could maybe attack the
- 25:09defense is on inside runs. They rank 26 EPA per play on
- 25:15inside runs. And if you can attack Denver
- 25:18with an inside run with a guy like Josh Jacobs, that gives
- 25:20Green Bay a really good chance I think to do some damage to the
- 25:24maybe the best defense in football.
- 25:26So that's a significant thing to watch to see if he gets on the
- 25:29practice field tomorrow. Javon Bullard, the slide corner,
- 25:33missed all of practice last week and he played on Sunday.
- 25:36So I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility if he
- 25:38misses Friday that he plays. But Josh Jacobs is not close to
- 25:43100% in a matchup that could be positive.
- 25:46That would be a big, big loss for Green Bay.
- 25:49It really would the other the match up I'm looking forward to
- 25:52is is as I assume at least Christian Watson matched up
- 25:56against Pastor 10. Now I want to I want to focus on
- 25:59Watson because Dave, I think that there was some, you know,
- 26:02you don't want to throw the word bust out there with you, but you
- 26:05started to wonder about him, right?
- 26:07Gave up a second round pick. North Dakota State.
- 26:09Was this a wasted pick? He was kind of slow.
- 26:12I think if memory serves, didn't Rogers hit him in his first
- 26:15pass, Maybe his first game and he dropped it and got in the dog
- 26:19house right away. But that's no longer the case.
- 26:21This guy is an emerging force at the wide receiver position for
- 26:25the Packers. Yeah, it was the very first play
- 26:29of the season, and he went deep in his hands rookie year.
- 26:32Yeah. And that does a lot for your
- 26:33confidence, not only yours, but obviously your Hall of Fame
- 26:36quarterback. Quarterback who tends to hold a
- 26:38grudge. Yeah.
- 26:40I mean, Watson's deal is he hasn't been able to stay healthy
- 26:43when he's been on the field. You know, he can run a 4340.
- 26:46He's 636-4220. You've got every single
- 26:50measurable you want in a stud wide receiver.
- 26:52He just hasn't stayed healthy. He came back ten months after
- 26:56the injury against the Bears a year ago at Lambeau Field and
- 26:59obviously has made an instant, instant presence as the go to
- 27:03receiver for Green Bay. Do you remember Romeo Dobbs?
- 27:05You used to hear his name. You don't hear much about him
- 27:08even being targeted by Green Bay these days.
- 27:11So no, he's he has been, it's been a great reclamation story.
- 27:15Sometimes these receivers do take a few years.
- 27:17Devante Adams didn't emerge until his third season as a
- 27:20second round pick. A Green Bay kind of played ahead
- 27:24of the game and and redid his deal before the season and added
- 27:27a year for 11,000,000 just to show him the faith that they
- 27:31believed that if he stayed healthy, they believed in him.
- 27:34It's looking like a brilliant move because he's looked like a
- 27:36$25 million receiver right now. My guess is they'll redo his
- 27:39deal after the season. Sign him long term.
- 27:42He has changed this offense with his emergence the last few
- 27:45weeks. 5 touchdowns the last four games for Christian Watson,
- 27:49including two last week. Last thing for me, Dave Ken's
- 27:52been surprised all week long. The point spread Green Bay, a
- 27:56road favorite against an 11 and two team that's won 10
- 27:59consecutive. Are you surprised by it?
- 28:01I knew that was going to come up.
- 28:03There was no doubt in mine that was going to come up.
- 28:06Be a home dog with A10 game-winning streak.
- 28:09Yeah. Maybe, I guess I, I thought it
- 28:11might be a pick em. I am a little surprised.
- 28:13I, I do think you look at the, the close calls, Denver's have
- 28:17some of the miracle fourth quarter finishes and at some
- 28:19point, maybe the logic is the run, the luck runs out.
- 28:23But yeah, I think this to me is a toss up game.
- 28:27I can see why Green Bay's favored because if you look at
- 28:29the DVLA for the teams top to bottom, Green Bay probably has
- 28:34an edge. They'll have the best player on
- 28:36the field, in my opinion. When Love's on the field, maybe
- 28:39Benito fans will disagree, and certainly when Mike is on the
- 28:42field, and I think in close games that that matters too.
- 28:45So yeah, I'm a little surprised, but I'm kind of confident about
- 28:49my squad's chances to step into that Hurricane there and take
- 28:53care of business. Well, one of the column, one of
- 28:55your columns I look forward to every week is your dogs that you
- 28:58put out on Saturday, that the dogs are going to be barking as
- 29:01you kind try to find some upsets.
- 29:03Go ahead and throw the Denver Broncos in for me.
- 29:05If you would, Dave, give me a little bit of of encouragement.
- 29:09Brother, we're out of time. Best of luck to you next week
- 29:11against the Bears. Keep up the good work.
- 29:14What you doing guys? Thanks for the time.
- 29:16Thank you, buddy. Good to talk to you.
- 29:17Dave Sinican covers the Green Bay Packers for zonecoverage.com
- 29:21and KFAN in the Twin Cities. All right, from the Packers to
- 29:25the Chiefs, Nick Athan as Chiefs blitz.com, Nick Trent and I are
- 29:28on location. We're a Jordan Creek Town Center
- 29:30variety, 2 days of compassion radiothon.
- 29:33So there might be a little bit of a delay, but let's get right
- 29:36into it with the with the Chiefs.
- 29:38And boy, oh boy, if there was any margin for error.
- 29:40That has now gone out the window, it seems to me, and I'm
- 29:44anxious to get your thoughts. The Chiefs have to win out, to
- 29:47have a prayer to get to postseason.
- 29:50Do you see it that way? Yeah, there's there's no
- 29:52scenario. The math just doesn't work.
- 29:54If they lose any of their four games remaining, they they have
- 29:58virtually no chance to to make the post a post season the first
- 30:02time at Pacman home era. And let's hope it's not the
- 30:06let's hope it's the last time this happened.
- 30:08But the Chiefs are a victim of their own success and they're a
- 30:12victim of themselves, and that's why they're in the the in this
- 30:15position. If you could point to one thing,
- 30:19what is the biggest issue? What is the biggest concern?
- 30:22Why this team is on the outside looking in.
- 30:25I think the offense has grown stale.
- 30:27It hasn't changed enough. You know, you look at the, you
- 30:32know, for those diehards that breakdown every aspect of the
- 30:35game in each of the last fourth down calls, Andy Reid made the
- 30:39same, called the exact same play.
- 30:41There's just not enough creativity.
- 30:44You know, they're relying on Patrick Travis and Chris Jones
- 30:47to to, to keep the glue together when they, when they have some
- 30:50really good pieces. But you know, they're just
- 30:54listen, I'm a realist. They've won for a long time.
- 30:57They've had a great 6-7 year run.
- 30:59I am not upset that they, you know, they're in this position.
- 31:03Hey, to me, Tank, go get a better draft pick.
- 31:06Maybe you could draft Love out of Notre Dame with the 14th or
- 31:0913th or 15th pick. But for me, I think it's just
- 31:14guys, you know, the Andy Reid message isn't the same.
- 31:17The coaching staff hasn't evolved.
- 31:19It hasn't changed. And they just need some fresh
- 31:22blood and some fresh perspective.
- 31:25And I think if they can do that, they'll be they'll be OK next
- 31:28year. But if they keep the same
- 31:29coaching staff together, to me that's the culprit.
- 31:32That's the reason I think they're in this position.
- 31:34That's interesting, Nick. So in our final couple of
- 31:36minutes with you here, you know, let's take it a step forward.
- 31:39And I don't disagree with what you said about the offense being
- 31:42a little bit stale. Do you think this might be the
- 31:44end of Andy Reid's career? I mean, would it surprise you
- 31:47getting up in age? I mean, what's he got left to
- 31:49do, for crying out loud, right? He's done everything.
- 31:52He's going to get to Canton. There's no doubt about it's It's
- 31:55not if, it's when. Is there a chance that Andy Reid
- 31:59walks away after this year? You know, that's going to be up
- 32:02to Tammy Reed and his wife. I mean, they've got a lot of
- 32:05kids and a lot of grandkids and, and you know, Andy, you know,
- 32:08Andy, for people that don't know, Andy Reed goes to sleep at
- 32:12midnight and at 3:30 AM he's at his desk.
- 32:15So he does this seven, he does this six days a week.
- 32:19And at some point at 6667 years old, you know, he's not a, he's
- 32:25not a skinny guy. And it's no offense to that.
- 32:29You know, he's got the Santa Claus look, but you know, how
- 32:32much more does he have to do now?
- 32:33If he's going to, if he's going to change the trajectory of how
- 32:36his career and he's got to make a lot of changes, that means you
- 32:39got to get rid of a lot of friends on his coaching staff.
- 32:42So is this the end? Do I think he'll suddenly
- 32:44retire? No, I don't think his ego will
- 32:46allow it. I think he really wanted to get
- 32:49Belichick's record for most wins and playoff wins.
- 32:51I don't think that's going to happen now.
- 32:54So I think for me, I don't think it's the last rodeo unless Tammy
- 32:59says, you know what, Andy, you've done enough.
- 33:01And then then he would step down and take an advisory role and
- 33:04then the fun begins. I mean, you could potentially be
- 33:07the next head coach for the Chiefs.
- 33:09Chiefsblitz.com, Chiefs blitz.com for our friend Nick
- 33:12Athan. Nick, thanks for jumping on.
- 33:13Appreciate it, brother. We'll, we'll talk to you next
- 33:16week. Thanks, Nick.
- 33:18All right, good luck with your Broncos this weekend.
- 33:20Thank you, pal. Appreciate it.

- 34:50donate your money in Iowa. It stays in Iowa.
- 34:52We've heard some phenomenally sad stories.
- 34:56The efficiency of this charity is one of the things that
- 34:59certainly sticks with me. And the fact that, you know,
- 35:01people need it right away. Boom, It's there not instantly,
- 35:05but within hours, literally, that help arrives and it helps
- 35:09in part, in a large part due to your donations.
- 35:13Variety iowa.com/compassion. All right, Trent, earlier today,
- 35:17you spoke with one of the other folks behind this, Aaron from
- 35:21Wild Rose. Yeah, let's hear from Aaron
- 35:22right now. Do you have that, Connor?
- 35:35Was that on me? Sorry about that.
- 35:36Hold on. That's all right.
- 35:39Actually, you know what, I think we can get it set up here and I
- 35:42can just play it from right here.

- 36:22coming up. We'll get to that I'm sure.
- 36:23The Thursday night tilt will be a part of it.
- 36:26Tampa Bay important game for them.
- 36:28I think Atlanta, they're probably their ship has already
- 36:31sailed as that's not going to a playoff does not seem to be in
- 36:34their future. But Tampa Bay still very much
- 36:37alive in the NFC South. We'll see if they're able to
- 36:40hold on. If they do, they would clearly
- 36:42be the four seed and no better than the four seed at this
- 36:45point. All right, we're working on to
