- Adam Rutz: The story you believe about yourself eventually becomes the way you live. Your mindset, how you view yourself, how you view your situation, and how you talk to yourself has a massive impact on the way you perform. If you constantly tell yourself, I'm terrible under pressure, I'm not confident, I'm just not that type of person. Eventually you start behaving in ways that prove yourself right. And that's why the way you see yourself matters so much. Carol Dweck, the Stanford psychologist and author of the book Mindset, teaches the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. A fixed mindset says, this is just who I am. A growth mindset says, This is where I am right now, but I can get better. And that difference is massive because maybe you're an athlete. Who's struggled in big moments and now you're starting to tell yourself that you're not very clutch. Or maybe you're in sales and you had a rough month and you've started convincing yourself that you've lost all your confidence. Maybe you've fallen out of your routine and now you're calling yourself lazy and undisciplined. Be careful because your current results are not your identity. Your current habits are not your identity. And your last performance, guess what? Not your identity. Those are all things you can change. And elite performers, they understand that identity should be built around the person they're becoming, not the mistakes that they've already made. So here's your challenge today: pay attention to the story you're telling yourself. And when you catch yourself saying, I'm bad under pressure, try, I'm learning how to respond better under pressure. When you catch yourself saying, I'm not confident. Remind yourself, confidence is something I can build. Then prove it with one action. Might be one workout, one extra rep, one difficult phone call, one disciplined decision, whatever it might be, because confidence doesn't come from telling yourself a better story once. It comes from creating evidence that the new story is true. Change the story, change the behavior, and over time you change who you become. Mindset, process, discipline, execution, that's mental performance daily.
