- 0:16Welcome. To PCR Sports, good evening, I'm
- 0:19Dipam and welcome to the PCR Sports Show this evening with
- 0:22myself and Nilesh. It's a start to your sporting
- 0:25weekend. Hope you've had a great week and
- 0:26thanks for joining us for this week's edition of the show.
- 0:29We've got a fantastic show lined up for you.
- 0:31We've got a massive cast in from the Peterborough Roller Hockey
- 0:35Club, can't wait to speak to them.
- 0:36They've been on before but as a club, but I think the people who
- 0:40are on tonight, some of them haven't been on before so it'd
- 0:42be great to hear from them. We've got Chantelle Coxon who's
- 0:45a marketing officer there, officer there and her son Alfie
- 0:48Sheltz who's an under 15 player, Sarah who's a safeguard officer
- 0:51and then Frankie Beebe who's an under 20 goalkeeper.
- 0:55So we've got a good range of players and off rink volunteers
- 0:58in to give us an overview of the club and what it's like to be
- 1:02involved in roller hockey in the city.
- 1:04So do stay tuned for that. But as always, let's start start
- 1:08off with this week's headlines. Nilesh Hassan for us.
- 1:10Hi Nilesh, how are you? Evening and yeah, your headlines
- 1:13this week and we'll start with the football and Peterborough
- 1:15United will play League One rivals Barnsley at the Western
- 1:18Homes Stadium in the second round of the FA Cup.
- 1:21It's the second successive home tie against a strong League One
- 1:25side for Posh, who knocked Cardiff City out in the first
- 1:29round last Saturday courtesy of a Harry Leonard goal.
- 1:33That was a 16th straight first round win for Posh.
- 1:36The ties for the second round are scheduled to be played
- 1:39around the weekend of the December the 6th or 7th and Posh
- 1:43will entertain Wimbledon tomorrow in League One action at
- 1:47London Road. In ice hockey, Peterborough
- 1:50Phantoms shaded the honours in their National League
- 1:53doubleheader weekend against the whole Seahawks.
- 1:56The City side were beaten 54IN Humberside on Saturday night but
- 2:00picked up a point after a third period fight backed took the
- 2:04match into overtime. Phantoms won the return game at
- 2:08Planet Ice 5/2 on Sunday to claim both available points.
- 2:12They are now fifth in the standings after winning eight of
- 2:15their fourteen matches. They have lost just once at home
- 2:19and that impressive record only briefly looked in doubt last
- 2:23night. Phantoms are at former coach
- 2:25Slava Kulikovs Sheffield Steel Dogs on Saturday in a 7:00 PM
- 2:29face off before entertaining local rivals MK Lightning on
- 2:33Sunday which is a 5:30 PM face off.
- 2:38Rugby and Peterborough RUFC are seeking redemption when they
- 2:41host Broad Street in the Regional 2 Midlands E League at
- 2:45Fortress Fengate on Saturday. It's the City side's first game
- 2:50since A-667 drubbing at the Market Harbour after a
- 2:54performance club director of rugby Shane Manning described as
- 2:58lacking fight. He threatened to shake up the
- 3:01team by promoting second team Stars.
- 3:04Borough are currently 6th in a 12 team division with Coventry
- 3:07based Broad Street in fourth. Stamford are 10th in the same
- 3:11division and entertain the team just below them only on Saturday
- 3:16in a little bit of running news from the local athletic scene
- 3:19and Peterborough and Neen Valley.
- 3:21AC aces Stuart Hall and Alex Gibb finished second and third
- 3:25respectively at Sunday's Frostbite League race in Fairy
- 3:29Meadows, but Yaxley runners pipped Panvac to finish as the
- 3:33top local team. They were third in the standings
- 3:36behind Hunts AC and Cambridge and Coleridge with Panvac 5th.
- 3:41The Yaxley performance due was due in no small part to their
- 3:45ladies who took four of the top 20 positions.
- 3:49Kaylee Longfoot in fourth was well supported by Roz Luttitt,
- 3:52Ellie Picover and Kerry Gemol who finished 17th, 19th and 20th
- 3:58respectively. Zoe Rowan also ran well
- 4:00finishing 27th, Luke Cossey 11th along with 15th place Jordan
- 4:07Buttjee and 17th place Darren Hillier were the leading Yaksini
- 4:11men with Craig Bradley close behind in 21st.
- 4:16And we'll finish with a little bit of Peterborough Sports.
- 4:18Football News and Peterborough Sports are out of the National
- 4:22League N relegation zone after completing back-to-back wins for
- 4:25the first time this season but failed to make it a hat trick.
- 4:29After a three win defeat to Macclesfield on Tuesday night, a
- 4:32game in which they finished with nine men, they managed to stay
- 4:36just above the relegation zone even though three teams below
- 4:39them, Alfreton, Southport and Oxford City all one.
- 4:43The City side beat Chorley for the first time in the club's
- 4:46history to one at Pyms Park last Saturday.
- 4:49Despite failing to convert a first half penalty.
- 4:52Luka Miller scored for the second game in a row for Sports,
- 4:56with captain Dan Jarvis striking A spectacular winning goal 2
- 4:59minutes into second-half into the second-half against
- 5:03opponents who had been reduced to 10 men in the incident which
- 5:06led to the first half spot kick. Sports travel to 9th placed many
- 5:10more on Saturday, which is a 3:00 PM kickoff.
- 5:14And those are your sporting headlines this week, DIPAM.
- 5:16Thank you, Nilesh. Lots going on as always, but
- 5:19let's start at Posh. You would have been there last
- 5:21weekend. Wonderful win against Cardiff in
- 5:23the in the FA Cup and for for new manager Luke Williams as
- 5:26well. Yeah, a very encouraging
- 5:28performance and certainly a performance that Luke Williams
- 5:33would have wanted and Posh was certainly on the front foot,
- 5:36dominated the game, certainly in the first half possession wise,
- 5:38just couldn't get that opening goal and came a little
- 5:41fortuitously. But yeah, it was great to see
- 5:44Harry Leonard get off the mark for for Peterbury United at
- 5:47last. Fantastic and Posh into the next
- 5:49round of the FA Cup like and what you said there, I think in
- 5:52the headlines, fantastic record 16 years running that Posh have
- 5:55made it past the first round, yeah.
- 5:56That's a great record to have. Slightly frustrated with the
- 5:59draw on a personal level, yes it's a home game, but facing
- 6:03Barnsley who are in League 1, you know it's a club that we're
- 6:05going to face this season on 2 occasions.
- 6:08It would be nice to play a team, let's just say a little bit
- 6:11lower down the pyramid just for new faces and perhaps an easier
- 6:17looking tie and making it into the elusive third round where
- 6:20the Premier League big boys come.
- 6:22Absolutely. Probably to take a similar
- 6:23performance to the Cardiff game to get past Barnsley and indeed
- 6:26against Wimbledon in the league this weekend as well.
- 6:28Yeah, indeed, Yeah, it was great to beat Cardiff.
- 6:30Obviously a little bit of a free hit you could say, but yeah, the
- 6:33bread and butter is tomorrow. Got to beat Wimbledon tomorrow
- 6:37and start picking up points in the league to move away from the
- 6:41relegation zone. The win should lift Posh off the
- 6:44bottom spot and Posh you've got game in hand against the clubs
- 6:46above them as well. So yeah, fingers crossed.
- 6:48And then and then the day at the moment, it'll just be about
- 6:50picking up those points and picking up a little bit of
- 6:52momentum ahead of the the league campaign pain.
- 6:56But having said that, we've got Wimbledon tomorrow, we go to
- 6:59Crawley on Tuesday night and then we've got a little bit of a
- 7:01break because the game against Mansfield next Saturday has been
- 7:04called off due to international call UPS and then we don't play
- 7:07again until, what is it week Thursday.
- 7:09Well, we've got high flying Stockport County at home on a
- 7:11Thursday evening, so. Games come thick and fast with
- 7:13quality of position as well, don't they?
- 7:15Well, there is that as well, yeah.
- 7:17And then we've got Stevenage at home on the Tuesday the 25th, so
- 7:20a little bit of a break in between games, which I'm sure
- 7:22Luke Williams will be appreciating being a new manager
- 7:25and getting his message across to the players in training.
- 7:29And whilst it's dirly doors, was there a markable difference in
- 7:32in any kind of posh style or or intention compared to and and
- 7:36you know, appreciate we have these new manager bounces quite
- 7:39often with with new teams coming in.
- 7:41So did you see much of a difference?
- 7:43Yeah, I mean, the difference was there in the in the result, I
- 7:46guess you could say. But yeah, Darren Ferguson was
- 7:49playing with three at the back in the latter stages of his
- 7:53tenure at the club, and Luke Williams went with 442 out and
- 7:58out four 4/2 as well. Two wide men in Odo and Lisby, 2
- 8:02strikers up front and a flat back four.
- 8:05So we'll be interested to see whether he looks to retain that
- 8:07shape for tomorrow, which I suspect he will.
- 8:10It'll just be perhaps one or two changes in personnel depending
- 8:13on how the players have come through training this week.
- 8:15Brilliant. So look, look at the posh in the
- 8:18coming weeks to see how that progresses.
- 8:20But the early signs are good. Thank you, Nilesh.
- 8:23Right, let's just take a short break there.
- 8:24We'll be back with our guests from the Peterborough Roller
- 8:27Hockey Club. We've got four of them in the
- 8:30studio with us, so we're looking forward to hearing from them
- 8:32about the sport and the club in the city.
- 8:34Stay tuned, PCR. Welcome back to the PCR Sports
- 8:37Show with myself, Dipam and Nilesh this week.

- 8:51So if you've got any news to tell us about the sporting world
- 8:54in the city or if you want to be a potential guest on the show,
- 8:57do reach out and we'll see if we can make that happen.
- 9:00But back to tonight's guest from the Peterborough hockey.
- 9:04It's a roller hockey club. We've got Chantelle Cox, a
- 9:06marketing man officer, Alfie Schultz who's an under fifteens
- 9:09player, Sarah who's a safeguarding officer and Frankie
- 9:12Beebe who's an under 20 goalkeeper with us in the
- 9:15studio. Great to have them all in.
- 9:17So welcome guys. Thanks for coming in this
- 9:18evening and great to see you all.
- 9:20Thank. You hello.
- 9:21For. Having us, great.
- 9:22Seeing you. Club are no stranger to the
- 9:24show. I think they've been on a couple
- 9:25of times before and I think Alfie's been on before.
- 9:28So yeah, he's he's a natural at this, this radio lark.
- 9:32So which is great to hear. Let's start off with the club
- 9:35itself. Sarah, if I may come to you
- 9:37first, for those that don't know the club or or know much about
- 9:42it, tell us a bit more about it in terms of, you know, how long
- 9:44it's been around where it's located.
- 9:46Well I I think the club is older than what we are to be honest
- 9:50with you. So it's been going since 1966, a
- 9:54huge amount of time. So over the years it's had
- 9:56different managers in place, different coaches in place.
- 9:59But Arthur Core, who's our head coach now, he is been in place
- 10:03for, I don't even know how long to be honest with you.
- 10:06He's just always been there. I don't.
- 10:08Think he'll ever leave. So yeah, so it's been, it's
- 10:13transformed over the years. It's been in all different
- 10:16areas, but really been settled at Bushfield Sports Centre since
- 10:19the late 90s. And that's where it's, it's
- 10:22generally stayed. And over the years it's just
- 10:25grown in, in popularity across the city and got lots of people
- 10:29involved. And so, yeah, it's been, it's
- 10:32had a really amazing journey actually, and an interesting one
- 10:35at that. Yeah, sounds it.
- 10:36And celebrate 60 years next year, which many people wouldn't
- 10:40even have thought that's the case, would it?
- 10:41Certainly when they started out. And and people who haven't heard
- 10:44of the club and and there's a club there that's 60 years old
- 10:46in city, well established. Absolutely.
- 10:49It's fantastic. You know, clubs that at the sort
- 10:52of what we call grass roots, amateur sort of semi
- 10:54professional level don't often last that long to.
- 10:57So to come this far in a journey is that absolutely amazing.
- 10:59No, absolutely. And it's, and it's, it's really
- 11:01lovely. It's such a lovely community.
- 11:04I've been involved for 10 years with my son.
- 11:07He was six years old when he came along.
- 11:08He, he saw the older players. He'd just come along to learn to
- 11:11skate because he wanted some roller skates.
- 11:13We only went along to learn and, and then that was it.
- 11:16He looked at the older kids that were there and he's like, I'm
- 11:17going to do that. And he did.
- 11:19And he is. And it's, it's been an amazing
- 11:21journey really. And to be part of that is a real
- 11:24honour and privilege and to be part of something quite big
- 11:26within the community. But you're right, people don't
- 11:28know about it. So it's really interesting when
- 11:31you're speaking to people and they say roller hockey and
- 11:33they're like, what's that? And then you show some videos
- 11:36and they're like, wow. Sounds really cool or looks
- 11:38really cool. Yeah.
- 11:40So that's how you got involved and obviously through your
- 11:42through your son playing and yeah, obviously you, you do.
- 11:44Did you ever play yourself or do you just take on?
- 11:46Absolutely not. I.
- 11:47Can't skate for toffee, so I fell over.
- 11:51I did get myself some skates a few years ago, fell over and
- 11:54they're still in the cupboard. So yeah.
- 11:56So apparently my husband used to skate really well, so I'm
- 11:59figuring that's where my son gets his balance from.
- 12:01Yeah, wonderful. But you've taken on a key off
- 12:03rink role at the club, which you'll hear about more in a
- 12:07little while. So that is a key role that that
- 12:09I think most do need to have moving across to to Chantelle
- 12:13and and Alfie. You guys I hear were actually
- 12:16recruited by Sarah, but kind of indirectly.
- 12:19So that's how you found yourself being involved with the club.
- 12:22Hello. Yes, we did.
- 12:24So yeah. So Alfie fell over and he split
- 12:27his lip and he decided buy some roller skates.
- 12:31So I was speaking to Sarah and she said, have you ever thought
- 12:36about learning to skate? So Alfie joined and he's been 2
- 12:401/2 years since. Fantastic and he's now in the
- 12:43under fifteens team. Is he?
- 12:45Yes. And have you ever fancied
- 12:48putting your skates on again and trying this hockey blog or.
- 12:51Not yeah. So sometimes I'll do roller
- 12:52discos with him. Oh, really?
- 12:54OK, Yeah. So we'll go to some roller
- 12:55discos and just do skating and not the roller hockey part.
- 12:58And yeah, not as good as him. He can skate backwards and do
- 13:04loads of tricks, you know, from learning to skate with
- 13:07Peterborough Roller Hockey Club. But no, I find it enjoyable to.
- 13:11So roller disco then? Do you have them actually at the
- 13:14venue a the club's based? Oh yeah, so it's not run by
- 13:17Peterborough Roller Hockey Club, but it is at Bushfield.
- 13:20OK. Yeah, so a lot of our skaters
- 13:22will do a roller disco as. Well, some of us older members
- 13:25of the city will remember there's an actual specific club
- 13:28called Rollers in the city at one point that actually did
- 13:30roller as a as a business basically.
- 13:33And I do. I remember going a few times and
- 13:35having kind of low to medium success.
- 13:37But there you go Alfie, if I bring you in now, you're you're
- 13:40playing for, for, for the club. Yes, I am.
- 13:43At the under fifteens level, tell us more about what
- 13:46interests you and why you got involved.
- 13:48So as my mum said, I got involved for other members and
- 13:56at this point it's all about practice and it's just really
- 14:01fun and exciting. Brilliant.
- 14:02And how long have you been? Playing 2 1/2 years.
- 14:05And you obviously enjoy it. You're still here playing.
- 14:07And what, how do you kind of balance it around just kind of
- 14:11school and and personal life is, is it easily done?
- 14:14It is pretty easily done if you like have an open schedule.
- 14:18But like you can, it's easier to balance out because you've got
- 14:22like sessions and it's not too stressful.
- 14:26That's good. So you can plan it in around
- 14:27homework, school life. As long as people don't waste
- 14:30time in front of Playstations and things, you can actually you
- 14:32can build it in quite well. So that's good to do.
- 14:35Frankie, if I bring you in, you're under 20 goalkeeper.
- 14:37I am, yeah. How do you find that?
- 14:40It's amazing. It's a privilege to actually be
- 14:42able to do it, really. Yes, I've been doing it for
- 14:45about 8 years now and yeah, it's definitely something.
- 14:49And what kind of got you involved?
- 14:51Then? What?
- 14:51What? Made you think.
- 14:52A few years ago I had a friend who did ice hockey, so I tried
- 14:56that out and it just wasn't really my finger.
- 14:58I was always better at roller skating.
- 14:59So I then looked into this and I found Peterborough hockey and
- 15:05there ever since I guess. Brilliant.
- 15:07And you prefer to play in goal, obviously, rather.
- 15:09Than yeah, I always wanted to be a goalkeeper, but I did start
- 15:11out being a player. I was a player for about two
- 15:13years and wasn't very good, so then I moved into Goal I'll.
- 15:17Stand between the sticks and let people fire balls out.
- 15:20Me. Really.
- 15:20Yeah. Gotta be some sort of crazy to
- 15:23be a goalkeeper. Fantastic, I think it is.
- 15:25In any sport where it involves a net mind or a goalkeeper, I
- 15:28think it it takes a particular kind of personality, character
- 15:31and like you say, a bit of craziness to to be able to do
- 15:33that. But well done to you.
- 15:34Fantastic. So how long have you been
- 15:36playing then? About 8 years.
- 15:38Wow. I guess you're you're.
- 15:39I joined when I was like 11 or so.
- 15:41So it's been, it's been good, yeah.
- 15:43Yeah, fantastic. So the club itself then what?
- 15:47How many, sort of what levels of teams and how many teams are
- 15:50there at the club? There's about 7 different teams
- 15:54all ranging from under elevens to seniors which go on basically
- 15:58any age so. So you've kind of been through
- 16:01that most of those levels. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:02I started, I think the youngest I was was under thirteens and
- 16:06then now I'm under 20s going into EC1 as well, which is the
- 16:10between under 20s and seniors. It's like a mixture of both.
- 16:13Yeah, so, so Chantelle coming to you.
- 16:16So there's there's a good pathway there for youngsters in
- 16:18they're getting involved as as Frankie just said, she's been
- 16:21there eight years, Alfie been there 2 1/2 years.
- 16:24So the kids can come through a pathway that allows them to sort
- 16:27of develop, train and then head towards being an adult at the
- 16:31club as well. Yes, there's progression there
- 16:33for children and I think that's what's really important.
- 16:35So we've got our learn to skate at the moment that we're
- 16:37offering out and two free sessions just to get people
- 16:40involved. And from there there's not that
- 16:44pressure to then go on to roller hockey.
- 16:46But I think once people have learnt how to skate and they
- 16:49enjoy skating that it's natural that they want to put that
- 16:52sticking ball in their hand. So yeah, we've got an under
- 16:57Elevens team and and under thirteens, under fifteens going
- 17:02all the way up to like Frankie said to seniors and to see
- 17:06people progress and then wanting to progress, it's yeah, it's
- 17:11amazing to be part. Of it, yeah.
- 17:13It's a unique sport, isn't it? Because you're kind of learning
- 17:152 skills, aren't you? If you want to play the sport,
- 17:18skating as well as the hockey side of things.
- 17:20Unlike a football, you know, playing football, for example,
- 17:22you run and kick a ball in the loosest sense, hockey, ice
- 17:25hockey, roller hockey. You've kind of got to learn 2
- 17:28disciplines, haven't you? And that that obviously takes
- 17:30some doing. Definitely, it's not just a
- 17:31sport you can step into, you have to be dedicated and you
- 17:35have to want to do it. And I think with the club being
- 17:38such a like huge part of the community and they're also
- 17:43welcoming and lovely and we we are like family.
- 17:47It's something that you want to stay and do you just feel so
- 17:50welcomed there. So once people join, as we've
- 17:53seen from Frankie, don't go away often.
- 17:55Stay. Stay for life, so to speak.
- 17:57And also the relationships that the, the, the kids all form with
- 18:00one another. So over the years I, I just feel
- 18:03that the club brings about so much dedication, but not just
- 18:06with the hockey, with everything.
- 18:08It's a real lovely life skill. So most of the kids, they want
- 18:11to hang out together outside. They look up to the older, older
- 18:14children and adults within the club.
- 18:16So we've got the National Premier League team as well.
- 18:18These are the senior, senior boys and girls playing and
- 18:22actually the younger ones look up to them.
- 18:24And so there's a real lovely feeling of the, you know, the
- 18:27younger kids seeing what can be achieved, but also this
- 18:30community where they're all spending time together.
- 18:32They're, you know, they're with like minded people.
- 18:35They enjoy the sport, they enjoy the time they spend, they
- 18:37socialize together and it becomes a big part of their
- 18:41lives just because they enjoy being with each other.
- 18:44So it's it's not just the the game that they play, but it's
- 18:48everything else that comes along it.
- 18:50It's a chance to have like a new set of friends, not the not just
- 18:52the ones they have in school or that live down the street.
- 18:54It's mixing with different set of friends, like minded people
- 18:57and and broadening your social horizons.
- 19:00And also the parents all get to know each other.
- 19:01So there's a real community where you know, your kids are
- 19:04safe and they're they're with people who are, you know,
- 19:07looking after them. So if I'm not there, for
- 19:09instance, for a match for Wimbleson's younger, he's a bit
- 19:12older now. But when he was younger, if I
- 19:13wasn't there, I, I knew that there was other parents there
- 19:16that I could say just just keep an eye on him.
- 19:18I'll be there shortly while he's playing a match.
- 19:20And I know that they would look after him.
- 19:22So there's a real family and community spirit with it all.
- 19:25Brilliant sounds good and you will come back in a minute after
- 19:28the break, but you talked about the team being in the Premier
- 19:30Division. It's also played in Europe as
- 19:33well, so people don't again don't realise that it's had
- 19:36great success, doesn't it, over the years, which is brilliant.
- 19:38It's. Been an amazing 10 years so I
- 19:40can't wait to tell. You fantastic, right?
- 19:41Hold that thought. We'll be back in a few minutes
- 19:42on PCRFM. Stay tuned.
- 19:44Welcome back to the PCR Sports Show.
- 19:45Here on PCRFM, you can hear us say in various ways around the
- 19:50world, if you can't TuneIn for a live show, you can record.

- 19:58is recorded and you can listen back.

- 20:04smart speaker to play PCRFM or listening through the app or the
- 20:08website or us. Or you can use DAB now as well.
- 20:12So if you've got a digital radio, retune that and you'll
- 20:15hear us on there too. Right, back to this evening's
- 20:17guests from the Peterborough Roller Hockey Club.
- 20:20We're joined by Chantelle. Alfie, Sarah and Frankie were
- 20:24just speaking there just before the break around the club
- 20:26itself. How long it's been, around 60
- 20:28years next year if you didn't know that.
- 20:30And it's based in Orton where it plays home matches and it's a
- 20:34growing club and it's had a lot of success over the years.
- 20:37As we were just touching on before the break, Sarah, you
- 20:39were telling us it's the the, the most senior team is in the
- 20:44Premier League, which is the highest division nationally.
- 20:46And it's had some European success as well.
- 20:48So tell us more about that. It's been a few, few good years,
- 20:51hasn't it? Yeah, I think, I think we we've
- 20:53seen some amazing achievements over the last over many years
- 20:57actually. I think there's been some
- 20:58amazing players that have come from Peterborough Roller Hockey
- 21:01Club who have then gone on to play in England and be supported
- 21:04by the National Roller Hockey Association and the
- 21:08opportunities that come from it have just been amazing.
- 21:11So there's different cups, European Cups that we can enter
- 21:14into as well or we can qualify for.
- 21:17And so we've been to, I think we've been to Spain, haven't we,
- 21:20France? Spain, France.
- 21:21Italy, Italy. And so that's, you know, a
- 21:25mixture of what the club has been able to get to itself and
- 21:29also with some of the members being able to play for England.
- 21:32And I know for Arthur, one of his head coach, one of his
- 21:37biggest achievements is when he sees kids come through and get
- 21:40to represent their country, which is just an amazing
- 21:43achievement for him, being the coach for us, you know?
- 21:45Which is incredible, isn't it? To kind of represent your
- 21:47country nationally and represent your club in Europe.
- 21:50You're getting to the elite level of any sport, aren't you
- 21:52really? And to be able to do that, you
- 21:54know, from from a club in Peterborough let's say, because
- 21:57we're not a massive city, but to be able to do that is absolutely
- 22:00amazing achievements. And we were talking earlier, you
- 22:02know, the, The thing is with roller hockey, whilst it's, it's
- 22:06an absolutely amazing sport, not many people know about it as we
- 22:09were saying earlier. And not just that, because it's
- 22:13slightly smaller, for instance, it's, it's not got the same
- 22:15level of members as football clubs, for instance, or how many
- 22:19football teams actually you can achieve a little bit more
- 22:22because you're not competing against so many other kids.
- 22:25And so there's lots and lots of opportunities to be able to
- 22:28progress and do different things.
- 22:29And even, you know, for, for these guys and for my son as
- 22:34well, you know, going across Europe and playing with
- 22:37different people across Europe, making friends.
- 22:39And then I'm going, oh, we've got a hockey camp in Italy over
- 22:41the summer. Do you want to come?
- 22:42And then a group of us all got together and we drive over to
- 22:45Italy, let them play for a week at a hockey camp and it's and
- 22:49they're just amazing. The coaches across Europe are
- 22:51just amazing as well. So the opportunities that the
- 22:54kids have is is something I've never experienced before.
- 22:58Yeah, it's bonding within themselves as a club as well,
- 23:00but then meeting new cultures, new people and and broadening
- 23:03your own horizons and education of the world, Isn't it really?
- 23:06It's, yeah. And that's what when I was
- 23:07talking about earlier that it's not just about with the role of
- 23:11hockey, it's, it's like a complete package that comes
- 23:14along with it. The dedication, the, the support
- 23:17that you get, but also the experiences that come along with
- 23:20it. It's just been really impressive
- 23:22really over the years. And I've, I've been there for 10
- 23:24years supporting my son there and myself and my husband have
- 23:28just absolutely embraced all the opportunities for him because
- 23:31like I said, it's character building.
- 23:33It's everything. And, and we don't, you know,
- 23:35Frankie, she's like my second daughter.
- 23:36So we're going here. She's like, come on then let's
- 23:40go. Fantastic, yeah.
- 23:41So it's it's the the achievements that can be made
- 23:44are pretty amazing and I've watched so many children come
- 23:47through the club as well and just see how far they get.
- 23:50And to be watching them on, you know, on on TV, playing for
- 23:54England or, you know, going to Euro hockey and playing that.
- 23:56We've just had one under fifteens, under fifteens.
- 23:59They've just been to Euro hockey, they've just been in
- 24:02Spain in the Euro hockey championships.
- 24:04Amazing experience again, you know, so this this role of
- 24:07hockey club really does go above and beyond, but it's also
- 24:10achieving really, really well. And but sadly, some of them what
- 24:15we've seen over recent years and you know, with the COVID gap
- 24:18that we kind of have, and I know we were saying earlier that
- 24:20there's lots of sports that have that is that the recruitment is
- 24:24a little bit slower than what it's been in previous years.
- 24:27And that's something we really hope we can kind of engage the
- 24:30community with and get people in to learn to skate and and start
- 24:33to build back up again sounds. Like a wonderful idea.
- 24:36Chantelle, if I come back to you for a moment, I think you
- 24:38touched on it before the break around what's on offer at the
- 24:40moment for people who want to join the club and get started.
- 24:43So if you don't mind, give us a bit of a bit of flavour of what
- 24:47can new members expect, you know from from joining, what kind of
- 24:51support they'll get? What's the on boarding process
- 24:52like? So that anyone who's thinking
- 24:54about perhaps having a go at the sport or certainly looking into
- 24:57it, what, how do they get involved and what can they
- 24:59expect? Yeah, so at the moment
- 25:01Peterborough World Hockey Club are offering two free skating
- 25:05sessions. So that's the landscape sessions
- 25:08either at our Bushfields Centre on a Friday or at the
- 25:13Peterborough College on a Wednesday there between 5:00 and
- 25:196:15 PM and it is just a drop in.
- 25:24So there, there's no ties, you can just come along and have a
- 25:27try. We do have skates ourselves, but
- 25:30if they can just give us a WhatsApp before to see if we've
- 25:33got the skates in stock. What size they are, Yeah.
- 25:36What size they are, yeah, just just to try the sport and learn
- 25:40how to skate. Yeah, sounds brilliant.
- 25:42It's it's, it's a kind of a a no lose trial, isn't it really, to
- 25:46be honest, for anyone who wants to have a.
- 25:47Go and also to reassure people that all the coaches of DBS
- 25:50checked have lots of experience of working with with children,
- 25:55teaching them how to skate. And we always make sure that
- 25:57they're really, really safe. So we wouldn't leave them in a
- 25:59position where they're just going to skate off and hurt
- 26:01themselves. So you've got people stood with
- 26:02them and we have lots of kids come along that are kind of arms
- 26:05and legs everywhere. And, you know, they have a coach
- 26:08literally walking along with them and helping them along.
- 26:11So, yeah, so everybody is as safe as possible.
- 26:13Lots of risk assessments in place and all DBS checks are
- 26:16just. And that's your responsibility.
- 26:17The club isn't. It my responsibility take it
- 26:20very seriously. Well, you should do, isn't it?
- 26:21Because I say it's safeguarding children, adults or everyone
- 26:26who's associated the club make sure they can have fun, be safe
- 26:29and do it in the best way possible.
- 26:31And we've got a great team of volunteers who all make sure
- 26:35that happen. We, we have a, a great group of
- 26:38parents who really do work extremely hard to make sure that
- 26:41that's all in place. So you just have to come down,
- 26:44bring your skates or ask us if you've got us your size in the
- 26:47skates and, and just come and have fun.
- 26:48That's all we want people to do is just to have fun and enjoy
- 26:51it. And if they want to stay, we'd
- 26:52love that. If you don't, you've learnt how
- 26:55to skate. Yeah, there's no, there's no
- 26:56crash. There's going to be bonus
- 26:57whatever you do. So Alfie, going back to enough
- 27:00years when you first started, do you remember how you felt when
- 27:03you first started and the help and support you got when you
- 27:06joined? Yeah, when I first started I was
- 27:08a bit nervous because it's obviously a new experience for
- 27:11me. But as I got on the rink, I felt
- 27:14very safe since I had a coach walking with me and teach me the
- 27:19first steps and what to do. And you were complete novice.
- 27:23You hadn't skated before. You lied.
- 27:25So you were doing this for the very first time.
- 27:27Yeah, first time ever, but I did feel safe when I first started.
- 27:34Yeah, you were looked after very well and and people helped you
- 27:36and supported you and can you remember how long it was from
- 27:40the day you walked into the club to when you played your first
- 27:42match? I think it was about a year
- 27:45because we got you'd get given the ball and stick after a few
- 27:51months of skating. So you're you'd be comfortable
- 27:56with one part of hockey for hockey?
- 27:59Yeah, because the key thing is to be able to maintain standing
- 28:01up and and roll and roller skate and then have your balance and
- 28:04everything before you start working with the other.
- 28:08Yeah, equipment that you need as well.
- 28:09So sounds good. So Frankie, do you remember?
- 28:11I know it was 8 years ago. Do you remember what it's like?
- 28:14Yeah, when I did landscape, it was in a different place because
- 28:17it was a long, long time ago. But after definitely make sure
- 28:21is that we know how to skate so many different styles like, but
- 28:24he also makes it fun. Like he used to do games back
- 28:27then, like tennis balls and everything.
- 28:30But I was quite scared when I started seeing all these big
- 28:33people playing hockey and everything.
- 28:35I kind of just wanted to get straight into that.
- 28:36But I already knew how to skate, just not very well, but I knew
- 28:40the basics. But I I was just excited to go
- 28:43get a ball and stick and call it a day basically.
- 28:45Really excellent and and can you remember how long it took you to
- 28:48start playing after you you? First joined the club, it was
- 28:50definitely a few months until I got a ball and stick and then we
- 28:54switched rinks and I, I just remember going straight on.
- 28:58So it must have been at least five months from the start to
- 29:01the end, Yeah. And been playing ever since.
- 29:04Fantastic. And and again when you joined
- 29:06you, you'd not skated at all before then.
- 29:07Or I had skated a few times. I knew how to skate the basics,
- 29:11but nothing as Arthur taught me. Yeah, he he taught me everything
- 29:14I needed. To know you were kind of more of
- 29:15a skater in a straight. Line.
- 29:16Yeah, you weren't very good at stopping.
- 29:19I don't many people, I've certainly wouldn't be.
- 29:21So that's brilliant, isn't it? And then I guess that's the art
- 29:24of it, isn't it? You know, it it once you skate,
- 29:26Yeah, most people potentially skate in a straight line, yeah.
- 29:29And then, you know, gently bump into a wall to stop themselves
- 29:31or whatever. But this is about twisting,
- 29:33turning, changing direction at at quick speed and quick pace.
- 29:37Isn't it? It's so important to actually
- 29:38know how to skate? Like, people say they know how
- 29:40to skate, but the way Arthur teaches you, you know
- 29:43everything. You'll, you'll know how to sit
- 29:45down and skate, you'll know how to turn around.
- 29:48You'll you'll do everything on skates.
- 29:49Fantastic. Tell us more about Arthur.
- 29:51He sounds like a. Wonderful.
- 29:51Arthur is amazing. He, he's our coach.
- 29:53He's been my coach ever since I've been playing.
- 29:55And he he really at the beginning he taught us
- 29:58everything we needed to know. And from now he, he has taken a
- 30:01step back a bit, but he is still an idol to me.
- 30:05Is he? Absolutely, yeah.
- 30:06Fantastic. That's super great to hear and
- 30:08it's they say it's that support of a community based club that
- 30:11you get that that you know, kids like Frankie will remember for
- 30:14life, won't they? Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:15And I think it is that that feeling if the kids feel safe
- 30:18and they know and the parents know that the kids are safe
- 30:21while they're there. And I'm and I'm talking about
- 30:23the fact that, you know, they've got balls and sticks and very
- 30:25young kids and, you know, injuries could happen if you're
- 30:28not careful. And I think the one thing with
- 30:30Peterborough World Hockey Club is it is about making sure that
- 30:33whoever's got a ball and stick is using it safely.
- 30:36They're making sure that they can control it.
- 30:38They're making sure that that nobody else has put in any risk
- 30:40or anything 'cause it's quite easy with these sports and
- 30:42because it's not, it's meant to be non contact.
- 30:44But obviously like you said, you can run into a wall or another
- 30:47person. So you need to make sure that
- 30:49you've got control and that you can stop.
- 30:51It's important, very important. Absolutely, yeah.
- 30:54Because the speed in which these guys go, sometimes I'm, you
- 30:58know, sat there watching and just I have to cover my eyes
- 31:00because when they get older and faster and stronger, the speed.
- 31:05Is just as a goal. It's very scary seeing someone
- 31:07coming at you at like 50 mph. Because in theory, I guess
- 31:10they're possibly. Again, you'll have to correct me
- 31:12if you're wrong, but are they going faster than if they would
- 31:14be running if you're? Not 100%, yeah, 100% yeah, yeah.
- 31:17And chasing after someone as well.
- 31:19And then their goal to try score against me.
- 31:21Terrifying. Wow, right, We'll hold that
- 31:24thought and leave it there for a moment while we're back again
- 31:27after the short break. Stay tuned, it's PCRFM.
- 31:29Welcome back to the PCR Sports Show here on PCRFM this evening.
- 31:33And we're in the company of the Peterborough Roller Hockey Club
- 31:37and been chatting about the club itself, the team and how people
- 31:41can get involved as well. And let's talk a little bit
- 31:44about the competition structure and how that works.
- 31:48We touched on Euro hockey just before the break there.
- 31:50And Sarah, you were talking about the success the club has
- 31:52had in the rink and the the the sort of the most senior team in
- 31:57the club plays in the Premier Division, which is the highest
- 32:00division in the country. And then has had European
- 32:02success, but of late the under fifteens also had that because
- 32:05it had had the experience of playing in Europe as well.
- 32:07Yeah, absolutely. I think Euro hockey is kind of
- 32:11nationally what everybody wants to get to within this sport
- 32:14because it's such a good competition and it happens in
- 32:17Spain, it's well organised and it's it's just great and it's an
- 32:20experience for all the players to go along.
- 32:24So is it under fifteens and under 17?
- 32:25Yeah, they. Fortunately don't have any other
- 32:28age groups, but they should. Yeah, they absolutely should,
- 32:31but it's just such an amazing competition and it's the top two
- 32:37teams from each country can qualify.
- 32:40Is it top two? I.
- 32:41Believe so, yeah. Just checking on giving the
- 32:43right information. I'll be told off afterwards.
- 32:45Else can then qualify for for Euro hockey.
- 32:48So yeah, so it's it's pretty amazing because you you get to
- 32:51go out and you've got all different players from different
- 32:54countries there. And yeah, just again, just that
- 32:57mixing with so many different people and experiencing so much
- 33:02and just an amazing vibe. And I think one of the things
- 33:05we're very proud of as a roller hockey club is that we've
- 33:09managed to go a few times in the last few years.
- 33:11So under 17 have been under fifteens have been a couple of
- 33:14times and me and Frankie were just talking before we went on
- 33:17areas that we we remember the match where the under fifteens
- 33:22and you might want to talk a little bit about.
- 33:23It because you've been having you go and tell us a bit more
- 33:25help first hand experience. Yeah.
- 33:27So a few years ago there was a game between our like biggest
- 33:31rivals at that time and we were 100% set.
- 33:34We were losing because we hadn't won a game against them.
- 33:38So we came in that game, we were confident, we were hyping
- 33:41ourselves up and everything. But I was the main goalie and I
- 33:45was terrified. I had so much pressure and I
- 33:49think that game was the best I'd ever played at that point.
- 33:51And we ended up beating them, I think 5 free, so many penalties.
- 33:56It was, it was a very close game going back-to-back, like they'd
- 34:00score a goal, we'd score a goal and it was absolutely amazing.
- 34:03And that was the game that we we won and we went to Euro hockey
- 34:07and it was one of our greatest years definitely.
- 34:09And. What was the experience like in
- 34:12in Euro hockey? Absolutely amazing.
- 34:13That was definitely one of the best years and I've been three
- 34:16times, but it it definitely tops it up because I was with all my
- 34:20friends. I was really close with everyone
- 34:22in that team and it was just it was a great experience.
- 34:26Excellent. Sounds wonderful.
- 34:27Alfie, have you played or would you like to play in Euro hockey?
- 34:30Yeah, that's what I'm hopefully going to be going forward to in
- 34:34the future. And you're getting into that age
- 34:35of bracket that Sarah just mentioned where that success is
- 34:37starting to happen for the club, isn't it?
- 34:39So it can't be too far away for you now.
- 34:41Yeah, hopefully in a few years or maybe even a year.
- 34:44Yeah, brilliant. That sounds good.
- 34:46Chantelle. Anyone who's listening out there
- 34:49and thinking they want to take up the sport of roll hockey or
- 34:52just at least have a look at it, how do they get, how do they get
- 34:55in touch with the club to find out more?
- 34:58So Peter for a roller hockey club is on Facebook, Instagram
- 35:02and TikTok. So just search him Peter for a
- 35:05roller hockey club and yeah, we're on there.
- 35:08So just drop us a message. We've got plenty of reels and
- 35:13photos and testimonials up there, so yeah, have a look.
- 35:18Thanks. And what's the what's the so
- 35:20roughly the dates of the season for the for the for the games
- 35:23when, when when do the season start?
- 35:24When does it finish for? It's like it's almost like
- 35:27school time. So yeah, when school like
- 35:30finishes, our season finishes for a couple of weeks.
- 35:32When it starts up, we start up, but our games depending on what
- 35:36age group you you are depends when your games start under like
- 35:39the younger lot start a lot earlier than the older lot.
- 35:41But it yeah, it's basically. Like, you're playing at the
- 35:44moment, aren't you? Basically.
- 35:44Yeah, yeah. So we should be playing.
- 35:46So those open sessions are available now than a. 100%,
- 35:48yeah, yeah. Brilliant and and obviously for
- 35:51two reasons. If somebody wants to come and
- 35:53watch the sport as a spectator, where, where do they go?
- 35:56When When are the games generally played?
- 35:58The home games are played at Bushfield Sports Centre and
- 36:03usually they're put up on to social media to let you know
- 36:07when we're playing. We also play away games
- 36:09obviously, so we're not there then.
- 36:11So please don't come down then. But yeah, we would love people
- 36:14to come down and support. We try and put on some tea and
- 36:17coffee and some snacks and stuff for everybody.
- 36:20So yeah. So feel free to just come down
- 36:22and have a look even before you can just.
- 36:24It's an amazing atmosphere. I think one of the things we
- 36:27were thinking about is just how fast it is and how compelling it
- 36:30is and just watching it, it just kind of gets you mesmerized
- 36:34because you're just like what's going on and everybody's so fast
- 36:37that you kind of have to keep track of where the ball is and.
- 36:39It'd be worth coming to watch, even if you're interested in
- 36:42playing the sport, even if you're not quite there, just
- 36:44come and watch. You get a flavour of what it
- 36:45feels like, what it looks like. Absolutely.
- 36:47And as we said, if you learning to skate, come down to the learn
- 36:50to skate sessions. There's absolutely no pressure.
- 36:52We we, we love the fact that within the community, we can
- 36:55help kids learn a new skill and be able to kind of develop
- 36:58themselves as well. And they don't have to stay in
- 37:01to play roller hockey. They can just come and skate and
- 37:04enjoy the atmosphere there as well.
- 37:06But if they do want to play roller hockey, absolutely we'll.
- 37:09Take them on board and Chantelle.
- 37:10What age ranges can can participate?
- 37:13So anywhere from five years old, we're looking at up to yeah, so.
- 37:21As old as you want to be, I think he didn't.
- 37:22Start till he was what, nearly 9?
- 37:26Yeah, nearly nine. And he's picked up the sport and
- 37:29is playing games as well, but from five years old.
- 37:32And then you can get the benefit from every age group.
- 37:34And I think the younger that you are coming into the sport, the
- 37:37the, you know, like with any sport, the the easier it is to
- 37:40pick it up as well. I think it becomes more
- 37:42difficult if you come in in your teenage years to then try and
- 37:47pick up all the skills and everything straight away and
- 37:49then expect to go into a team. It just won't be safe because
- 37:53you need that skill set. So the younger you are, that
- 37:56kind of gets in young. Kids are more of a sponge,
- 37:59aren't they, To take in information and learn, aren't
- 38:01they? And they just kind of pick it
- 38:02up, really. It's amazing to watch kids that
- 38:04come and they, like I said, arms and legs everywhere.
- 38:06And then within a few weeks they're skating around and
- 38:09stopping properly and going this way and being told to slow down,
- 38:13you know? So it's brilliant.
- 38:14Brilliant final word to Alfie and to Frankie.
- 38:18Anyone who's listening out there, not sure thinking about
- 38:20it, any parents or any kids listening, what would you, what
- 38:23advice would you give them? Alfie or Frankie, which one
- 38:26either of you want to give to people who are unsure about
- 38:29whether to play or not? I would say just give it a go
- 38:32and if you do, if you do, think about coming, like Chantel said,
- 38:39give us an e-mail or just pop us a message and then you can get
- 38:43in contact with us and talk to us about it.
- 38:47Brilliant. Thank you.
- 38:47And Frankie, I'd definitely say if you are interested, come
- 38:50because it is life changing. It is you.
- 38:53The family you build here is incredible and the experience
- 38:57and you have like going abroad and it is just a great
- 39:00opportunity and it isn't, it isn't that hard on your life.
- 39:04It's just, it's amazing. Fantastic.
- 39:07There you have it, fantastic chat with members of the Peter
- 39:11Royal Hockey Club who would have thought it 60 years old next
- 39:13year, a club that plays in the top division in the country and
- 39:16plays in Europe as well. So absolutely wonderful.
- 39:19Thank you all for coming in. It's been absolutely fantastic.
- 39:21Thank you very much. Thank you for the opportunity.
- 39:23No. Pleasure and we, you know,
- 39:25wishing you all continued success and, and obviously
- 39:28success in, in, in the UK and in Europe.

- 39:32touch and we'll see you again soon.
