- 0:14There is something that we all do, and we do
- 0:17it so often and so unconsciously that we think
- 0:21it's normal. And yet it, by definition, will
- 0:24destroy our relationships. You do not want to
- 0:27miss what I'm going to share today. Stay with
- 0:29me. I'm Dave Drewy, and today on Living on the
- 0:33Edge, Chip Ingram continues our series, Caring
- 0:36Enough to Connect, Building Bridges to Those
- 0:39We Love. So far in our study, Chip has shown
- 0:41us that knowing God as He truly is changes how
- 0:44we love the people around us. And today he tackles
- 0:47a dangerous habit so common we barely notice
- 0:50we're doing it. But it's one that quietly poisons
- 0:53almost every relationship we have. Now if you
- 0:56need to catch up on any of these messages at
- 0:58another time, just go to livingontheedge .org.
- 1:02Now let's join Chip in 2 Corinthians chapter
- 1:0510 for today's message titled, comparison always
- 1:08leads to carnality. Someone asked me recently
- 1:13if I would just kind of step back and say, you've
- 1:17been a Christian a little over three decades
- 1:19now. Just in terms of simplified principles,
- 1:22if you were just going to sit down with someone
- 1:24over a cup of coffee and say, what are the biggest
- 1:26life lessons you've learned about doing relationships
- 1:30God's way, doing relationships in a way? so that
- 1:33how you relate to one another around the word
- 1:36of God and the spirit of God would actually allow
- 1:39both of you to become more like Christ. And so
- 1:41I sat down and put my feet up and got a cup of
- 1:43coffee and prayed and said, Lord, you know what,
- 1:45what is it? And so, you know, a number of different
- 1:48ones, like I started with it all begins with
- 1:50God. That was my first principle. I realize is
- 1:53that everyone in the world wants to tell you
- 1:55how to do relationships. And I realize God has
- 1:58laid out in his word, this is how you do relationships.
- 2:02And then I begin to think of other things. You
- 2:04can't impart what you don't possess. I can't
- 2:08give to another person in a relationship what
- 2:10I'm not getting from God. I've learned over the
- 2:13years that everyone behaves in a way that makes
- 2:15sense to them. That has transformed my life.
- 2:17It helps you step back so you don't get engaged
- 2:21in something where you respond emotionally. And
- 2:24then another principle for me is everyone is
- 2:26desperately insecure. And some people show their
- 2:29insecurity with strong reactions and powerful.
- 2:31And, you know, they tell you what they've done
- 2:33and what they've accomplished and how much money
- 2:35they make and who they know and what they drive
- 2:37and, you know, on and on and on and on. And they
- 2:40do that because they seem really big and you
- 2:43seem really small and that creates distance.
- 2:46And that distance makes them feel safe. And other
- 2:49people are insecure with weak reactions. What
- 2:52they do is they look at their feet and I'm a
- 2:54nobody and I can never do anything. And you know,
- 2:56my mom was a nobody. My dad was a nobody. And
- 2:58you know, I haven't done this and I haven't done
- 3:00this. And you know, they withdraw from relationships
- 3:02and it creates distance. But it's rooted in the
- 3:05same thing. You know, once you realize everyone's
- 3:08desperately insecure, we just show it in different
- 3:10ways. Well, principle number six for me is that
- 3:14comparison always leads to carnality. Comparison
- 3:19always leads to carnality. And what I've tried
- 3:23to do with these little principles, I just thought,
- 3:24God, help me be real simple. A principle, a passage,
- 3:28and then some practice. What's the principle?
- 3:31Comparison always leads to carnality. Who's the
- 3:36fastest? Who's the smartest? Who's the prettiest?
- 3:39Who's the sexiest? Who's the best looking? Whose
- 3:43kids are the brightest? Did you go to this school
- 3:46or that school? Who has the nicest clothes? What
- 3:48kind of car do you drive? Where do you live?
- 3:51What is your zip code? People Magazine, who's
- 3:54the most famous? Forbes Magazine, who's the richest?
- 3:58When you pull up at a stoplight, Unconsciously,
- 4:03if there's two or three lanes, you will tend
- 4:04to look to your right and you will tend to look
- 4:07to your left. And you will unconsciously go through
- 4:10a series of things. You will look at what kind
- 4:12of car they're driving. You will make observations
- 4:14about how the gal is wearing her hair, not wearing
- 4:17her hair, how much jewelry she has, what it looks
- 4:19like. If it's a BMW and has number seven something
- 4:23with an I in the back, you make certain... observations
- 4:26and conclusions. If it's a VW van with the peace
- 4:29sign and the guy has multiple tattoos and Rastafarian
- 4:32hair, you make certain conclusions. And you unconsciously
- 4:38begin to ask, where do I fit? And you gravitate
- 4:42like I gravitate in your humus to either feel
- 4:45superior or inferior. Or judging, you know what,
- 4:50I'll tell you what, look at all those rich people
- 4:52and what a waste of money to have that much jewelry
- 4:54and the poor could have been fed and you know
- 4:56what, you know what, I think an Audi would be
- 4:58okay, but a BMW, that's totally out. Or you know
- 5:00what, why didn't that guy get a bath? That's
- 5:02his whole problem. You know something, that hair
- 5:04stinks and there's lice in it and you know, that's
- 5:07the problem of this world. The 60s is over, why
- 5:10didn't that guy get a life? And what I can tell
- 5:12you is, you don't know anything about either
- 5:14of them. You don't know anything about either
- 5:18of them and neither do I, but it's habitual.
- 5:22I made a list. I went from car to home to clothes
- 5:26to jewelry. I noticed now, have you ever found
- 5:29out like when you get engaged and then when you
- 5:31get a wedding ring or an engagement ring and
- 5:35ladies, do you all, I mean, please don't look
- 5:38at me, but have you ever tried to compare the
- 5:40size of the diamond that someone else has with
- 5:45when you got engaged? Or when you're newly married,
- 5:48do they own their house or rent their house?
- 5:51Or what school did you graduate from versus what
- 5:56school someone else graduated from? Is it weird
- 5:59that as parents, we want people to know our kids'
- 6:01SAT scores? Like that really changes the world.
- 6:08We compare our kids, our schools, our education,
- 6:13our IQs. And all I want to tell you is every
- 6:18time you compare yourself with other people,
- 6:22whether it's your insides or your outsides or
- 6:25your possessions or your position, it always
- 6:28leads to carnality. And by carnality, I mean
- 6:31sin. The passage I'd like to give you is 2 Corinthians
- 6:3510, verse 12. And I'd like you to go ahead and
- 6:38open your Bible and look at that. And the Apostle
- 6:42Paul is in a situation where he's being compared.
- 6:45He's being compared with these so -called super
- 6:47apostles. And the Corinthian church is saying,
- 6:50you know something, you act like a real big shot
- 6:54when we get these letters, but we are not really
- 6:57that impressed with you. And Paul really hates
- 7:00to do it, but defends his apostleship and talks
- 7:03about some amazing experiences and different
- 7:06things he's had. But in verse 12, he gets to
- 7:09the core of the issue about relationships. It
- 7:12says, for we are not bold to class or compare
- 7:14ourselves with some of those who commend themselves.
- 7:17But when they measure themselves by themselves
- 7:20and compare themselves with themselves, they're
- 7:24without understanding. And is that graphic? We
- 7:28are not bold to compare ourselves with some of
- 7:31those. Paul says, I'm not comparing myself with
- 7:34other people. Why? When they measure themselves.
- 7:40and compare themselves with themselves, they
- 7:43are without understanding. In your notes, if
- 7:47you want to, you might jot down 1 Corinthians
- 7:4915, 10, where the Apostle Paul does just the
- 7:52opposite. And I remember the first time I read
- 7:55this, and I mean, I never opened the Bible till
- 7:57I was 18. So I'm like probably 18 and a half
- 8:00now. I'm a Christian about six months. I'm reading
- 8:01through the New Testament for the first time.
- 8:03And when I first read this verse, I thought,
- 8:05this guy's like really arrogant. I can't believe
- 8:07he said this. I am what I am by the grace of
- 8:10God. And his grace did not prove vain toward
- 8:13me, but I labored more than all of them. Speaking
- 8:16of the other apostles, yet not I, but the grace
- 8:19of God in me. And you know, when you really study
- 8:23that, he's not arrogant at all. He has an accurate
- 8:25assessment of himself. I am what I am by the
- 8:28grace of God. The brains I have, grace of God.
- 8:30The looks I have, the grace of God. Position
- 8:32I have, the grace of God. The money I have, the
- 8:34grace of God. The talent I have, the grace of
- 8:36God. The parent I have, the grace of God. I am
- 8:38what I am. God made me and God placed me in this
- 8:42family at this time with these gifts, with these
- 8:45strengths, with these liabilities, with these
- 8:47experiences, both wonderful and difficult by
- 8:50his grace. And then it's interesting once you
- 8:52do. And his grace didn't prove vain toward me.
- 8:56I didn't compare myself with other people. I
- 8:59saw who God made me and where I am and what I've
- 9:03been through. And then I labored. I labored.
- 9:07I worked. I took what God gave me and who he
- 9:10made me. And this is a time where he does have
- 9:14a little comparison. He goes, more than all of
- 9:16them, yet not I. even my labor, even my energy,
- 9:20even my passions, even my desires, not I, but
- 9:23the grace of God. And so all I'm saying is in
- 9:27relationships, and this is a habit that is so
- 9:29hard to break, is if you can begin to say to
- 9:34yourself, I'm gonna break the habit of comparing
- 9:37myself with other people. I am telling you, it'll
- 9:41liberate you. When you can go through the checkout
- 9:44stand, ladies, and see the front of Cosmopolitan
- 9:47and Us and all the magazines and how, quote,
- 9:51you're supposed to look and realize the genetic
- 9:53pool of which is drawn is like the upper one
- 9:56or 2 % of all the women made in all the world.
- 9:59And they have, you know, airbrush, surgeries,
- 10:04and money like you don't have. And they're, you
- 10:09know, can you imagine having, the only job you
- 10:11have is look pretty? I remember them interviewing
- 10:13one lady who's noted, I won't mention any names,
- 10:17who's noted not only for her beauty, but for
- 10:20her wonderfully articulate bodily shape. Can
- 10:25I say that in the right way? And she talked about
- 10:28five and six hours a day, the regimen she went
- 10:32through to keep. different parts of her body
- 10:34looking the way they needed to look so she could
- 10:37get in front of the camera and make millions
- 10:39of dollars. Now, I don't know about you, but
- 10:40how many of you have five or six hours a day
- 10:42to do, you know, buns of steel or whatever, you
- 10:45know? And yet that picture flashes and you've
- 10:50been told ever since you were a little girl or
- 10:52guys, when you look at men's fitness and you
- 10:54see that guy with, you know, those rippled abs,
- 10:55they don't have six packs, they got 12 packs.
- 10:58But you know what? If you got five hours, now,
- 11:00should you be in shape, take good care of your
- 11:02body, all the rest, of course. But I mean, that's
- 11:04a 12 -pack, that's a full -time job. I mean,
- 11:06you gotta be in the gym for hours and hours and
- 11:08hours. But these images of these pictures, and
- 11:12we compare ourselves both up or down. And the
- 11:16moment we do, it always leads to carnality. The
- 11:20principle, comparison always leads to carnality.
- 11:22The passage, 2 Corinthians 10, 12. the practice.
- 11:26Let me give you three things that I think will
- 11:30really help you break the habit. Number one,
- 11:33habitually choose to view others the way God
- 11:37does. And jot down 1 Samuel 16, 7. Habitually
- 11:41choose. It's a choice. You won't naturally do
- 11:45this. Habitually choose to view others the way
- 11:49God does. 1 Samuel 16, 7. God's looking for a
- 11:52king. He says to the prophet, go over to Jesse's
- 11:57house. He's got a lot of boys. One of those boys
- 11:59is a king and I'll show you. All the boys line
- 12:01up. The prophet looks at them all and he goes,
- 12:03you know, hey, you know, we got a problem here.
- 12:05And, you know, one of them, especially strong
- 12:07and mature and good looking and big. And, you
- 12:10know, the father's kind of going, it's him, right?
- 12:13Prophet says, no, I mean, do you have any other
- 12:15sons? And basically all we, you know, there's,
- 12:17you know, the little guy, you know, I mean, he's
- 12:20young. And so David comes. And do you remember
- 12:25what the prophet says? For God sees not as man
- 12:28sees. For man looks on the outward appearance,
- 12:31but the Lord weighs the heart. And I don't know
- 12:35about you, but God has been so gracious to reprove
- 12:38me so painfully that I am habitually in the practice
- 12:45of choosing to look at people the way God does.
- 12:49I'll never forget my greatest reproof I was preaching
- 12:54in California and there was a guy who came, sat
- 12:57on the front row, had long Rastafarian locks,
- 13:01had what appeared to be a dress on or a robe
- 13:04with a multicolored coat and a funky little hat.
- 13:08And he sat, you know, I always sat kind of on
- 13:11the front row and I was like six or eight rows
- 13:13away. And the aroma of his life on the streets
- 13:17was reaching me six or eight rows away. And I
- 13:20later learned his name was Dan, and he became
- 13:23affectionately called Dan Dan the Hippie Man.
- 13:27And I was preaching, and I'm wondering, man,
- 13:29where is this guy coming from? I mean, if I had
- 13:32seen him on the streets alone, it would have
- 13:34been like, you know, ball my fist here. You know,
- 13:37he's a drug addict. I wonder where he's coming
- 13:38from. And if he's not a drug addict, he's a nut,
- 13:41you know. And so I get done preaching and I notice
- 13:44he's really paying attention. I think that's
- 13:46good. You know, he's probably coming off drugs
- 13:48and, you know, the meth or the heroin or the
- 13:51cocaine has got him wired up or something. And
- 13:53I get done. And when I get done, we had these
- 13:55steps and I would go down these little steps
- 13:56and he just came up to me like this. He goes.
- 13:59Pastor, it's so good to be here. I could just
- 14:02feel the presence of Jesus. And then he goes
- 14:05like this. And I mean, this guy gave me a bear
- 14:08hug. And you're not one of those polite Christian
- 14:11little hugs where, you know, we all know it's
- 14:13gotta be quick and, you know, man to man, you
- 14:15know. And I mean, he's hugging me like I just
- 14:18gave out silver dollars and he got nine of them,
- 14:20you know. And then he looks at me like this.
- 14:23He goes, I'm so glad God brought me here. And
- 14:26I'm thinking, and then I talked to him. Man,
- 14:29this guy's in the Bible every day. He had a radical
- 14:32conversion. I later learned that he came for
- 14:35a few weeks and he said, well, I'm back onto
- 14:37God's calling. And he went on the road and he
- 14:40was purposefully a homeless person sharing Christ.
- 14:43And then he actually made his way about halfway
- 14:45across the United States and got involved in
- 14:47a cult. And I got this long letter about all
- 14:50these weird people. And, you know, I don't know
- 14:52much about the Bible. I was only a Christian
- 14:54about six months. So I write him a letter and
- 14:56he said, this is where you can contact me. And
- 14:58I gave him information about the cult. And I
- 15:00said, I love your heart. You need to get some
- 15:02training. He came back, walked all the way back
- 15:05and hitchhiked back to California, went to Bible
- 15:08school, later married another girl and their
- 15:10ministry, boy, their wedding was wild. And I
- 15:13mean, he ended up, he was quite a flute player,
- 15:16ended up on our worship team. And I'm telling
- 15:19you, if I have ever met someone who was Jesus
- 15:22to people that other people won't give the time
- 15:26of day, it was Dan, Dan, the hippie man. We even
- 15:31were a part of getting him in Bible school and
- 15:33he got training. And you know something? Isn't
- 15:36it easy to look on the outside? Oh, look at that
- 15:39hairdo. Look at her nails. You know, those nails,
- 15:41that'd be $65. I wonder if they're fake or not.
- 15:43Look at those shoes. You know, look at that bag.
- 15:45You know what? I wonder if that's one of those
- 15:46bags where the imprint really is the Louis, whatever
- 15:48it is, or is it just a knockoff? You know, look
- 15:50at that. Look at that. Look at that. Look at
- 15:51that. Look at that. You know. People's luggage
- 15:54coming off of racks. We make observations, how
- 15:58they sit, how they talk, where their accent.
- 16:01He kind of talks like this. He sort of has a
- 16:03slurry. Must be from this part of the country.
- 16:05He looks like that. He or she must not be very
- 16:08smart. Comparison always leads to carnality.
- 16:12Habitually choose to refuse to view others in
- 16:17any other way than God does. And you will be
- 16:21pleasantly surprised. Second practice is habitually
- 16:25choose to evaluate yourself the way God does
- 16:29or to look at yourself. If you'll open to Psalm
- 16:32139, you know, some of us, as the Apostle Paul
- 16:36says, think too highly of ourself. My experience
- 16:39is most of us think too lowly of ourself. You
- 16:43need to habitually go into practice, go into
- 16:46training that when you look in the mirror, Rather
- 16:50than looking at yourself the way you do, begin
- 16:54to look at who you are the way God does. Here's
- 16:58how God looks at you. Psalm 139, verse 13. David
- 17:02is sharing his heart inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- 17:04He says, My frame, literally my skeleton, my
- 17:20structure was not hidden from you when I was
- 17:22made in secret and skillfully wrought in the
- 17:25depths of the earth. Your eyes have seen my unformed
- 17:28substance. Literally the idea, your eyes saw
- 17:31my embryo. And in your book, they were written
- 17:35all the days ordained for me when as yet there
- 17:38wasn't one of them. Here's a God who knows you.
- 17:41You have DNA like no one else. He created you
- 17:44exactly the way he wanted to create you with
- 17:46the color of eyes, with the personality, dropped
- 17:49you in the family that he would know. It doesn't
- 17:51matter whether you had a good dad, a bad mom,
- 17:53an absent. God loved you so much that he knew
- 17:58he needed your mom and your biological dad's
- 18:01DNA to make the unique you. And when he looks
- 18:04at the unique you, You are fearfully and wonderfully
- 18:07made. You are valuable. You are unique. You are
- 18:11precious. You matter. Not if you were taller,
- 18:15not if you were smarter, not if you were more
- 18:17outgoing, not if you were better in this or better
- 18:20in that. You, I mean, what he's describing, they
- 18:23hadn't learned to talk yet. This is God's view
- 18:26of you before you did anything. Goes on to say,
- 18:29how precious also are your thoughts, God, toward
- 18:34me. How vast is the son of them. If I should
- 18:37count them, they would outnumber the sand. When
- 18:41I awake, I'm still with you. God views you as
- 18:44something that matters, that is precious. He
- 18:47thinks of you all the time. He loves you and
- 18:51cares for you just the way he made you. Now,
- 18:54do you have a stewardship with your body to make
- 18:57it the best that it can be and be healthy? Sure.
- 18:58Do you have a stewardship with your mind? Of
- 19:01course. Do you have a stewardship with your gifts
- 19:03and your talents? Yeah. But I'll tell you what,
- 19:06most of us have bought into a culture where we
- 19:09find someone a little bit better than us and
- 19:12we envy them because we compare ourselves with
- 19:14them. And then we find someone a little bit lower
- 19:17than us and we compare and we are either self
- 19:20-righteous if we do it spiritually or we feel
- 19:23superior or arrogant because what really happened
- 19:27is we don't view ourselves rightly. You got to
- 19:30look yourself in the mirror and say, God, thank
- 19:32you. you're all wise. You could have made me
- 19:376 '2". You could have made me 5 '7". You know,
- 19:40you could have given me blue eyes or brown eyes.
- 19:43You could have, you could have. And all the answers
- 19:46to God says, wait a second. I've not made any
- 19:49mistakes ever, ever. Not even a small one. The
- 19:54wisdom of God is that God brings about the best
- 19:57possible results by the best possible means for
- 19:59the most possible people for the longest possible
- 20:01time. Not only what he has done, could not be
- 20:05done better, but how he does what he has done
- 20:08could not be improved upon. And that's who you
- 20:11are. And you know, when you embrace that, all
- 20:15of a sudden, you know what? It doesn't matter
- 20:18what they drive. It doesn't matter what their
- 20:20test scores are. It doesn't matter if they went
- 20:22to this school or that school or whether they
- 20:24can shoot it or kick it or play it or paint it
- 20:28better than you because God's not comparing you
- 20:32with any of them. You are his unique masterpiece.
- 20:38Comparison always leads to carnality. To break
- 20:41it, habitually choose to view others the way
- 20:43God does. Secondly, habitually choose to view
- 20:46yourself as God does. And third, habitually choose
- 20:50to measure your performance and success by answering
- 20:54the following questions. This is real quick,
- 20:57but I literally, I do this all the time. You
- 20:59know, I'm kind of nutso with this little three
- 21:01by five cards and all that stuff. I actually
- 21:03ask myself these questions about my performance,
- 21:07okay? My performance as a father, my performance
- 21:10as a husband, my performance as a pastor, my
- 21:13performance as a friend. I mean, we all perform,
- 21:15we do things, right? And the question is, well,
- 21:17are you successful or not? We all wanna be successful.
- 21:21And by the way, that word in Hebrew in Joshua,
- 21:24when it talks about meditating on his law in
- 21:25order that you can be successful, the word means...
- 21:28prudent to look into something in order to do
- 21:31your life in a way that is aligned with God's
- 21:34will or wisdom. And so success, real success
- 21:37is figuring out how God has orchestrated life
- 21:39and doing life his way. And so how do you measure
- 21:43your success? Three questions. Question number
- 21:45one I ask is, did I give my very best effort?
- 21:49Did I give my very best effort? And I have, I
- 21:52always have a verse with these, sorry. Colossians
- 21:543 .23, whatever you do, do heartily as unto the
- 21:57Lord and not unto men, for it is God who is going
- 22:00to reward you. Did I give my best effort? Am
- 22:03I giving my best? Is this the best shot I have
- 22:06as a dad? Is this my best shot as a husband?
- 22:09Is this my best shot on this message? Is this
- 22:11my best shot in this difficult situation? Did
- 22:13I give my best effort? Not, how did I do compared
- 22:17to someone else who does the same thing? I mean,
- 22:20I don't wanna compare myself to Chuck Swindoll
- 22:23and Andy Stanley and all these other, I'm not
- 22:25them. I don't wanna compare myself to other people
- 22:28that are these amazing fathers from, you know,
- 22:31I'm not them. The question I need to ask is,
- 22:34first, did I give my best effort? Second, who
- 22:37am I seeking to impress? Who am I seeking to
- 22:41impress? Am I seeking to impress my wife, my
- 22:45kids, what people think of my kids? Am I seeking
- 22:48to impress other people? It's an audience of
- 22:51one. The only way you break the grip of comparison
- 22:54is to know success is I gave my best effort,
- 22:59number one. Number two, I did it unto you. I
- 23:03love the little song by Sarah Groves. It's called
- 23:05This Journey Is My Own. If you've never heard
- 23:08it, it's on her Conversation album. It's an awesome
- 23:10song. And she has this little song where she
- 23:12says, you know, this journey is my own. There's
- 23:15a day I'm gonna stand before the Lord. And she
- 23:18says, this journey is my own. It's not what anyone
- 23:20else's thinks. And then she has this great line.
- 23:22Why should I waste my life or lose my life trying
- 23:26to please people basically that I'll never be
- 23:28able to please instead of God? Third question
- 23:32is this, am I fulfilling my God ordained potential?
- 23:36And you can jot down Matthew chapter 25, 14 through
- 23:40about 30, Matthew 25. See, sometimes we get real
- 23:44excited and we think, wow, I did great. Because
- 23:49you compare it to this person or this person
- 23:52or this person. And I will tell you what you'll
- 23:54do naturally because you want to be successful.
- 23:55We all find someone worse than us. If you're
- 23:59a 10 talent person and you score a seven, you
- 24:03don't get an A. But if you score a seven and
- 24:07most of the world is a four, The whole world
- 24:09can think you're a winner. You are doing great.
- 24:12You are awesome. What a mother, what a father,
- 24:14what a worker, what a friend. But if God, the
- 24:18issue is not how are you doing relative to any
- 24:21other person? The issue is how are you doing
- 24:24relative to who God made you? And are you extracting
- 24:29the potential? Because when I get before God,
- 24:31he's not gonna ask me, well, you know, these
- 24:34other speakers and other pastors, man, they were
- 24:36better than you. He's only got one question.
- 24:38I deposited a certain amount of gift and talent
- 24:42in you, Chip. How much of it did you extract?
- 24:46How much of it like the apostle Paul, I am what
- 24:49I am by the grace of God. And you went for broke
- 24:52and you disciplined yourself and you were diligent
- 24:54and you did it unto me. And I gave you this much
- 24:58and you really use this much. You didn't coast
- 25:01on gift. You didn't compare yourself with other
- 25:03people. You became. All I designed you to be.
- 25:08Because at the end of the day, that will be the
- 25:10measuring stick. Comparison always leads to carnality.
- 25:15The key verse, 2 Corinthians 10, 12. The habits
- 25:19are three and they're simple. Habitually choose
- 25:22to view others the way God does. Habitually choose
- 25:25to view yourself the way God does. And measure
- 25:28success not by how you do with others, but compared.
- 25:35to who God made you to be, and are you fulfilling
- 25:38your potential? That little principle has been
- 25:41transformational in relating to people and the
- 25:44kind of relationships that I think helps us be
- 25:45like Jesus. You're listening to Living on the
- 25:50Edge with Chip Ingram, and today's message is
- 25:53titled, Comparison Always Leads to Carnality.
- 25:56Now, if you've missed any part of this program,
- 25:59you can find it anytime at livingontheedge .org.
- 26:03Comparison doesn't just create carnality with
- 26:06the people around you. It can just as easily
- 26:08convince you that you're not equipped to talk
- 26:10about Jesus, especially next to someone who seems
- 26:13better at it. Well, Aaron Pierce's book, Not
- 26:16Beyond Reach, shows you how to actually introduce
- 26:19Jesus to someone who doesn't yet believe, with
- 26:22practical strategies for the moment you've been
- 26:24putting off. Aaron reminds us that with intentionality
- 26:28and dependence on the Holy Spirit, no one is
- 26:31outside of God's reach. Get your copy of the
- 26:34book, Not Beyond Reach, at a special price today

- 27:38Chip. I am so excited about what we learned today.
- 27:42I mean, just pause with me, will you? Can you
- 27:45imagine what would happen In the world, I mean
- 27:49in relationships everywhere, if all of us just
- 27:53would believe and receive these few lines of
- 27:56truth, the issue is not how I'm doing relative
- 27:59to other people. The issue is how I'm doing relative
- 28:03to who God made me. Am I extracting the potential
- 28:08that he's put in me? Am I fulfilling the purpose
- 28:11and the plan for me? Because here's the deal.
- 28:14I'm not like anybody else. You're not like anybody
- 28:17else. God has a special plan for you. When you
- 28:21compare, you either come away with thinking you're
- 28:23better or thinking you're worse, and both are
- 28:26wrong. The fact is you're different. You're unique.
- 28:29Can you imagine what would happen if little by
- 28:33little you could say in your heart over and over,
- 28:36Lord, you love me? You made me, you gifted me,
- 28:40and you brought me to this place and this time
- 28:43for a very specific purpose. I want to be who
- 28:47you made me to be, and I want to fulfill the
- 28:50plan that you have for me. God, would you help
- 28:54me see that? Would you give me the courage to
- 28:57step out and do it? I mean, can you imagine the
- 28:59impact that would have, not just in your life,
- 29:02but in the lives of believers, if we could just
- 29:05pause? And you don't need to sing like that person.
- 29:08You don't need to preach like that person. You
- 29:11don't need to lead like that person. You don't
- 29:13need to have mercy and compassion and counsel
- 29:15like that person. You know what you need to do?
- 29:18You just need to be you and take the gifts that
- 29:22God's given you and the passions and even the
- 29:25hurts that you've experienced that make you you.
- 29:29And you need to not compare that person with
- 29:32anyone else, but just say, Lord, What's that
- 29:35look like to bring grace to my family? What's
- 29:37that look like to encourage my friends? How does
- 29:40me, just who you made me, what's that look like
- 29:43showing up at work? Here's what I want you to
- 29:45know. Comparison always leads to carnality. Break
- 29:51the habit. Well, that's all for today. Join us
- 29:54next time here on Living on the Edge with Chip
