- 1:21Speaker 1: the Nick Carter serial era. So we're going to go
- 1:24Speaker 1: back in time about four years to nineteen forty four.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Nick Carter began as a thirty minute program and back
- 1:35Speaker 1: in April of nineteen forty three, and it stayed that
- 1:40Speaker 1: way for fifty three weeks, and then in April nineteen
- 1:45Speaker 1: fifty four it began its run as a five day
- 1:51Speaker 1: a week cereal and that lasted from April seventeenth through
- 1:57Speaker 1: September first, accounting for ninety eight episodes, and when we
- 2:01Speaker 1: came to these in the course of doing the show,
- 2:05Speaker 1: I just basically said, we don't have any of these episodes. Well,
- 2:09Speaker 1: that was a good couple years ago, and since then
- 2:13Speaker 1: some episodes have emerged. Of the ninety eight episodes, seven emerged.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Three are from different scattered stories. It wouldn't be any
- 2:21Speaker 1: good to listen to, but there's a six part serial,
- 2:25Speaker 1: of which four are now in existence, and having listened
- 2:28Speaker 1: to all of the existing episodes, I think the story
- 2:31Speaker 1: is easily enough to follow. So we're going to go
- 2:34Speaker 1: ahead and play part one in part two of The
- 2:37Speaker 1: Accidental Bullet. The original air date June the twelfth and
- 2:41Speaker 1: June the thirteenth of nineteen forty four. So here now
- 2:45Speaker 1: is Nick Carter.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Those Secretary of the Treggery, Henry Morgan, Paul Munie, French
- 2:50Speaker 2: of Home, Walter Houston, Charles Lachman, Austin Wells, among us,
- 2:53Speaker 2: will be heard on the Big Show that Stops the
- 2:55Speaker 2: Fifth Wall on tonight at ten o'clock. You can hear
- 2:59Speaker 2: this thing walk on show all the mutuals tonight at
- 3:02Speaker 2: ten o'clock Eastern wartime.
- 3:16Speaker 3: What the matter is the case for Nick Carter, Master Detective.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yes, it's the case for that most famous of all manhunters,
- 3:23Speaker 2: the detective whose ability of solving crime is unequaled in
- 3:25Speaker 2: the history of detective fiction, Nick Carter, Master Detective. Continuing
- 3:35Speaker 2: the curious adventure called the Accidental Bullet or Nick Carter
- 3:41Speaker 2: and the Mystery of the Murdered Dog, where the mystery
- 3:49Speaker 2: of the test tube murders finally solved. Nick Carter is
- 3:52Speaker 2: taking it easy. He has no case to occupy his mind,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and what's more, he hopes none will come along. It's
- 3:58Speaker 2: ten o'clock in the morning and he's only arrived at
- 4:01Speaker 2: his office.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Nick came on you at almost ten o'clock.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Yes, I know.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I just felt lazy this morning, and he calls, not
- 4:10Speaker 3: a thing.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Wasn't anything a mail either.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'll work in my lab this morning. When
- 4:15Speaker 2: something comes up. I'm counting on you to keep me
- 4:17Speaker 2: from being disturbed, and that it's something.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Really important, I will Nick.
- 4:24Speaker 4: It's pretty sure, Nick Heirs must be catching there's only
- 4:29Speaker 4: the mail man. It was just a minute. Yes, can
- 4:35Speaker 4: I help you, young lady.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I want to speak to mister Nicholas cut him.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Oh well, won't you come Injrea, please sit down.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Mister Simon Agnew's my name, young lady. I used to
- 4:45Speaker 2: know Nicholas father and I were old friends.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I think.
- 4:48Speaker 2: No, I want to see Nicholas, you know what a
- 4:50Speaker 2: smart boy. Maybe he'd detect him enough to tell me
- 4:52Speaker 2: whom I did.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Lord Nelson, who murdered Lord Nelson?
- 4:55Speaker 2: That's what I said, young lady, Lord Nelson last night
- 4:58Speaker 2: in my backyard with a bullet tight.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Hair, died in your backyard. But mister Agnew, Lord Nelson
- 5:03Speaker 4: was a famous British admiral who died of the batting.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Lord Nelson is a bulldog too, young lady, my watchdog. No,
- 5:10Speaker 2: he did murdered by some seeving rascal. I want to
- 5:13Speaker 2: hire Nicholas cat Her to find the man who killed him.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Oh, I see well, mister Agnew, I'm afraid mister Crowder
- 5:20Speaker 4: doesn't investigate the murder of dogs. You see, he's wrong
- 5:25Speaker 4: nick this, mister Simon Agnew. He says you were the
- 5:27Speaker 4: friend of your father.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Of course, how are you, mister Ragna? Speaking of you often?
- 5:32Speaker 2: What seems to be the trouble? I heard someone mention
- 5:34Speaker 2: the word murder Lord Nelson Nicholas, Lord Nelson has been murdered.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Lord Nelson was mister Agnes's watch dog. Nick I was
- 5:41Speaker 4: just telling him that the dog murders there are a
- 5:43Speaker 4: little out of your line.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Murder is murder, young lady, whether it's a dog or men.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Isn't that right, Nicholas? I agree with you, mister Agnew,
- 5:49Speaker 2: and are we glad to looking at the matter?
- 5:50Speaker 3: For you?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Where this is different?
- 5:53Speaker 3: I have never tried to find the murderer of a
- 5:55Speaker 3: dog before.
- 5:55Speaker 2: May be very interesting case. I want the murder of
- 5:57Speaker 2: punished to the full extent of the law. Nicholas. Well,
- 6:00Speaker 2: mister Wagno, I can't make any promises, but I'll do
- 6:02Speaker 2: my best. You want to go long passins, I sure do.
- 6:04Speaker 4: There is no day to sit in an office, all.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Right, come on, then let's get started. Well, here we are, Nicholas,
- 6:19Speaker 2: and here's where I live, I say, and I say,
- 6:22Speaker 2: the cottage. You have a loan, he said for Lord Nelson. No,
- 6:26Speaker 2: he's dead, but it's been so isolated. Don't you ever
- 6:28Speaker 2: get lonely? He can't.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Really.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I'm an inventor. I can't work if there are a
- 6:32Speaker 2: lot of people around the bottom.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Me.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Yes, I know, I'm not way myself. Well, let's get
- 6:36Speaker 3: out and see what the fire.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Come in this way, Nick, we'll go through the house.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I see you have no neighbors near you, and here
- 6:44Speaker 2: your house is two hundred yards away. What's this? I'm
- 6:49Speaker 2: show you one of my little inventions.
- 6:50Speaker 4: What kind of an invention to dagne especials?
- 6:53Speaker 2: Burglarproof locked?
- 6:54Speaker 4: But there isn't any lock on the door at all.
- 6:56Speaker 4: There isn't even a door.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Now that way. It's burglar proof. And just watch. All
- 7:02Speaker 2: I need to do is to blow this whistle and
- 7:09Speaker 2: the door opens. It's not you see the sound of
- 7:14Speaker 2: the whistle operates an electric luck.
- 7:16Speaker 3: It smart, heh come in, come in. It's a very
- 7:19Speaker 3: clever device, mister Agnew It.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Certainly is Olberger would have a dream of blowing a
- 7:23Speaker 4: whistle to make a door open.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And if he did, you'd give himself away at once.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Ain't got something else here? The linders, you too, my silent.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Secretary, A silent secretary.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yes, it's an automatic recording device that takes down everything
- 7:37Speaker 2: a visitor says while he's in the house. I say,
- 7:40Speaker 2: was it on the way he came in? Only it
- 7:42Speaker 2: first and I cut it off I play it back
- 7:44Speaker 2: for him, and you'll hear the first things you said
- 7:46Speaker 2: when you came in.
- 7:48Speaker 3: It's a very clever device, mister Agnew.
- 7:50Speaker 4: It certainly is Olberger would have a dream of blowing
- 7:53Speaker 4: a whistle to make a door open.
- 7:55Speaker 2: That's when I cut it off. Yeah, Bradice is all
- 7:57Speaker 2: hidden in the coat closet here. Never guess that, did you,
- 8:00Speaker 2: Miss I certainly didn't, wonderful miss Dagner.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Do you have many other inventions like this?
- 8:04Speaker 3: Oh?
- 8:05Speaker 2: Dozens of them. That's what the burglar who killed Lord
- 8:07Speaker 2: Nelson was. After I see you're sure it was a burglar?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Then who else had killed and watch dog? And come along,
- 8:14Speaker 2: I'll show you his body sin the kennel out back
- 8:16Speaker 2: to the house. He's read this way. Haven't touched him
- 8:22Speaker 2: right here by the back steps and made Lord Nelson
- 8:25Speaker 2: laying inside stone dead.
- 8:30Speaker 3: M m.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Asked.
- 8:32Speaker 3: The bullet entered his head while he was lying there asleep.
- 8:35Speaker 3: At least he didn't suffer the.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Finest watch dog. You could run the bucket head off
- 8:40Speaker 2: if a stranger came near the house.
- 8:41Speaker 3: And yet he was asleep when he was killed. What
- 8:44Speaker 3: didn't mean I seem stranger didn't wake up? When the
- 8:46Speaker 3: murderer entered the yard. It was thought of that, he said,
- 8:49Speaker 3: a burglar killed him.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Was your house robed last night?
- 8:53Speaker 3: As director?
- 8:54Speaker 2: Well, no, he clints it wasn't.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Was there any sign of a burger even having tried
- 8:58Speaker 3: to get.
- 8:58Speaker 2: In they wasn't get at Nick, I don't believe Lord
- 9:02Speaker 2: Nelson was killed by a burglar. But who did kill him?
- 9:06Speaker 2: I don't know yet, mister Ragna. What's in that direction
- 9:09Speaker 2: up there, up the hill and through those trees over there?
- 9:12Speaker 2: Just a stone house and place anywhere near me? Anyone
- 9:15Speaker 2: live in it? Named so many bough to get the
- 9:18Speaker 2: whey to go through, something with club brazing. Not a
- 9:21Speaker 2: hunting car by any chance. No, Nicholas knew hunting around
- 9:24Speaker 2: here anymore.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I see.
- 9:25Speaker 2: I suppose you let me and Patsy look around for
- 9:27Speaker 2: more clues. You can go on with your work in
- 9:29Speaker 2: the meanwhile. Ah, right, Nicholas, But let me know what
- 9:31Speaker 2: you find.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I will.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I want bet murder caught.
- 9:34Speaker 4: In cold fellow must have been off he found of
- 9:36Speaker 4: his dog.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yes, But Patsy, I don't believe Lord Nelson was killed intentionally?
- 9:40Speaker 4: Why not?
- 9:40Speaker 2: Let's first look at this hole on the side of
- 9:42Speaker 2: the kennel where the bullet went through. Would anyone have
- 9:44Speaker 2: deliberately fired through the kendle to kill the dog?
- 9:47Speaker 4: That's right, they wouldn't. They'd have run the risk.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And and then again, if anyone had come into the yard,
- 9:52Speaker 2: the dog would certainly have waked and barked.
- 9:55Speaker 3: No, Patsy, the bullet that kill Lord Nelson came from
- 9:57Speaker 3: some distance away.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Yes, of course I can see that.
- 10:00Speaker 2: No, I think it probably was a wild bullet, and
- 10:02Speaker 2: judging from this hole in the kennel, it came from
- 10:04Speaker 2: someplace up that hill.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Then it must have been an accident.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Oh.
- 10:09Speaker 4: If that's true, then no one's to blame and the
- 10:11Speaker 4: case is solved.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Not necessarily, Betsy, I have a funny hunch there's still
- 10:15Speaker 2: a lot we don't know about this case.
- 10:17Speaker 3: So before we come it closed, let's take a walk
- 10:19Speaker 3: up that hill and see what we can find. This
- 10:33Speaker 3: must be the house Agnew mentioned.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Curious over all made of stone, looks like a miniature castle.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Yes, the style that was popular back in the eighties.
- 10:43Speaker 3: I watched that loose step.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Deserted or covered with ivy windows had shutters over them.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Does I think I hear someone over there?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Yes?
- 10:55Speaker 3: Look over there on the terrace with.
- 10:58Speaker 4: The man mopping up the top.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Oh, I look at him, scrub hello there, Oh are
- 11:05Speaker 2: you what do you want? We're looking for the owner
- 11:08Speaker 2: here round right. No, this is a social tolom Oh
- 11:12Speaker 2: I see then as the manager around. Oh, mister Kent, Yeah, yeah,
- 11:16Speaker 2: he's insigne.
- 11:17Speaker 3: I'd like to speak to him for a moment.
- 11:19Speaker 2: All right, I'll go get him. Who wants Carter?
- 11:21Speaker 3: Nick Carter?
- 11:22Speaker 2: Nick Carter? Okay, just a moment, mister Carter.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Let me acting suspicious of it, didn't he?
- 11:28Speaker 3: Yes, we rather took him by surprise.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Nick. He wasn't mopping up the whole terrace. He's been
- 11:33Speaker 4: working on justice. One small song.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I probably just got started. Betcher, Maybe Petsy down the
- 11:39Speaker 3: hill through the trees.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Nice, you can just through the bat and Agnes Cotter's here.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Do you think the bullet that killed Lord Noltan kings?
- 11:48Speaker 2: Mister Cotter, I'm how it can manager of the fifty
- 11:51Speaker 2: two club. My assistant says, you want to see me, Yes,
- 11:54Speaker 2: mister Kent, I hope you could give me some information information. Yes,
- 11:58Speaker 2: did you hear a shot.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Fire near this house anytime last night?
- 12:01Speaker 2: A shot? Yes?
- 12:02Speaker 3: Why?
- 12:03Speaker 2: No?
- 12:03Speaker 4: No?
- 12:04Speaker 2: I didn't you bill not name mister kit I didn't
- 12:07Speaker 2: hear it, then, why you asked, mister Carton.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Mister Agnew's dog was killed last night, and my second.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Time means that a stray bullet struck a dog belonging
- 12:14Speaker 2: to a neighbor of yours, and we just wanted to
- 12:16Speaker 2: find out if it came from around here. No, we
- 12:19Speaker 2: couldn't have not any guns around the place except for
- 12:22Speaker 2: the ornamental old antiques in the game room. I see,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I suppose this is bridge club.
- 12:28Speaker 6: You're running in, uh cod club, mister Cotton, for a
- 12:31Speaker 6: free well to do members who liked privacy, do we
- 12:35Speaker 6: You're perfectly honest. They all like to get together for
- 12:38Speaker 6: an occasional game of poker where they won't be disturbed.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I see, Well, sorry to bother you, Oh not at all.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I guess you better get back Betsy's.
- 12:46Speaker 2: We're concerned.
- 12:47Speaker 3: The case is closed.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Sorry, it couldn't be of more help quite all right.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Hey, Patty, these steps run even better than I am.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Yet they were both lying. I'm sure of it.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I think so too, But then why are we leaving?
- 12:58Speaker 4: We haven't given up, have you.
- 13:00Speaker 2: No, Patchy, I haven't. There's nothing more we can do here. Now,
- 13:03Speaker 2: you can't prove they're lying without some kind of evidence.
- 13:07Speaker 2: What I do now that the Simon agnews, I'll ask
- 13:10Speaker 2: him to let me take the dog's body back to
- 13:12Speaker 2: my office. I'm gonna dig out that bullet.
- 13:13Speaker 3: And examine it.
- 13:14Speaker 4: What do you think you can lend in the bullet?
- 13:16Speaker 3: I haven't the faintest idea yet, Paty, but I'm going
- 13:18Speaker 3: to find out.
- 13:30Speaker 4: You need any help me?
- 13:31Speaker 2: No, Fatchy won't take long to dig the bullet out.
- 13:33Speaker 4: What in the world is the moose Canton that assistant
- 13:35Speaker 4: of his and trying to cover up?
- 13:37Speaker 2: Well, perhaps the bullet will give us a clue.
- 13:39Speaker 4: I'll be right next is you're already next.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Make it easy, sister.
- 13:52Speaker 3: You wouldn't be wearing masks if we wanted you to
- 13:55Speaker 3: know that.
- 13:55Speaker 7: Sister, that's right, and these nice little guns will go
- 13:58Speaker 7: off if you don't do just like we tell you.
- 14:00Speaker 3: What do you want you want to see? Nick Carter?
- 14:04Speaker 4: He's not here.
- 14:05Speaker 2: You're lying. We saw both of you come in not
- 14:07Speaker 2: more than a minute ago.
- 14:08Speaker 3: There's the door over there, Jake, it's probably man. Now
- 14:11Speaker 3: you're right, okay, sister, call Nick Carter to come out here.
- 14:14Speaker 4: I won't do it.
- 14:15Speaker 8: Maybe this will help you to change your mind. Yes, sister, Joe,
- 14:20Speaker 8: come to that door with a gun when Carter comes
- 14:22Speaker 8: out to see that the act nice? I guess you now, Sister,
- 14:26Speaker 8: you call Carter, I won't.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Oh, you're hurting me.
- 14:30Speaker 2: He ain't even begun to hurt you. Honey, you like s.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Nick nick?
- 14:37Speaker 3: Take him up? Katta play nicer.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I'll plug it.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Eh, it's right.
- 14:43Speaker 4: I couldn't help calling you.
- 14:45Speaker 2: That's all right. Well, what do your two thugs want?
- 14:49Speaker 7: We want the body of that dog you just brought here, Carter,
- 14:52Speaker 7: the body of the dog. Yeah, we're gonna get it.
- 14:55Speaker 7: If we have to tell you, a boat just as dead.
- 14:57Speaker 2: As a dog is. What do you know about that dog?
- 14:59Speaker 3: And don't mind what we know. Suppose I refuse to
- 15:02Speaker 3: tell you.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Suppose I plugged this pretty secretary of yours. Let me
- 15:08Speaker 5: teach Cadder a little lesson Jacob. You'll make him more
- 15:11Speaker 5: respectful of visitors after this.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Shut up, Joe. Well, Connor, do we get the dog's
- 15:17Speaker 2: body or do we get to practice our marksmanship on
- 15:20Speaker 2: the dame here? All right?
- 15:22Speaker 3: You win?
- 15:24Speaker 2: Dogs are my laboratory that room there, yes, inside on
- 15:28Speaker 2: the lab table. Take a look, Joe, right, just be
- 15:31Speaker 2: a second. Better, be careful, Jake, you're heading for trouble.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Who's running this little part of you?
- 15:37Speaker 3: Or me?
- 15:37Speaker 2: I'm just warning you. Well, don't bother you? Got it, Joe?
- 15:42Speaker 5: Yeah, it's in his box. He hadn't taken it out. Yes,
- 15:48Speaker 5: and here's some rope I figure did knee let's.
- 15:50Speaker 7: Say, yeah, that's the one. All right, big black bulldogs,
- 15:56Speaker 7: very dead. Okay, we'll tie him up and then beat
- 16:01Speaker 7: it out of here with a dog.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Course, they certainly tied a tight nick. Have you been
- 16:17Speaker 4: able to reach any.
- 16:17Speaker 9: Of the not yet, No, Petsy, I can't seem to
- 16:20Speaker 9: get any slack at all. But the arm of his
- 16:23Speaker 9: chair is coming loose. I can only pull it out.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Yeah, now it's coming there.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Ah, that is it?
- 16:33Speaker 3: Oh good, Now to slide the rope off the arm
- 16:36Speaker 3: of it. That's it. Now that gives me enough slack
- 16:40Speaker 3: to work my arms out of this. And there Prest
- 16:44Speaker 3: wants you talk to him a free men again. Now
- 16:46Speaker 3: there's a second and I'll cut you loose.
- 16:50Speaker 2: There, Hya, passy. I didn't take too long. I'm afraid
- 16:55Speaker 2: Sak and Joe are already too far away for us
- 16:57Speaker 2: to catch them. They were those masks they were wearing.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I couldn't make out their features, but they're not important
- 17:02Speaker 2: and just a couple of hired thugs working for someone else.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Who in the world would hire two gunmen to steal
- 17:06Speaker 4: a dead body of a dog.
- 17:07Speaker 2: That Patsy is something we've got to find out. I'm
- 17:10Speaker 2: sure if one thing my patent. It wasn't the dog
- 17:12Speaker 2: they wanted. It was a bullet that killed him.
- 17:15Speaker 4: But that doesn't make any sin. But it was just
- 17:17Speaker 4: a stray bullet that killed Lord Nelion.
- 17:18Speaker 3: That's what I think.
- 17:19Speaker 2: What's happened proves conclusively it wasn't just a stray bullet.
- 17:22Speaker 2: There was something very special about that bullet in some way.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It was probably a clue to some crime we don't
- 17:28Speaker 2: know about.
- 17:28Speaker 4: M our only clue now it's gone.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Perhaps not those two gunmen got away with Lord Nelson
- 17:34Speaker 2: the bullet, but maybe they weren't quite as clever as
- 17:36Speaker 2: they thought.
- 17:36Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 17:37Speaker 2: Just before they came in, I took an X ray
- 17:39Speaker 2: picture of the dog's head. The X ray will show
- 17:41Speaker 2: us the bullet clearly. Maybe it'll tell us as much
- 17:44Speaker 2: as the bullet itself could.
- 17:45Speaker 4: That's wonderful, nigg.
- 17:46Speaker 2: It'll only take me a few minutes to develop the plate.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Then we'll see what we can learn from it. Here's
- 18:00Speaker 2: the negative, Paty, I'll hold it up to the light.
- 18:04Speaker 4: There there's a bullet. It shows up plainly.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Yes, that's strange.
- 18:10Speaker 2: What's the bullet?
- 18:13Speaker 3: It's no ordinary bullet.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Judging from this X ray, I'd say it was originally
- 18:18Speaker 2: a perfectly round bullet, but.
- 18:20Speaker 4: No modern gunfire.
- 18:22Speaker 3: A round bullet, I know, kind.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Of bullet our grandfathers used to use in their old
- 18:26Speaker 2: fashioned muzzle loading pistols.
- 18:28Speaker 4: What on earth do you suppose it means?
- 18:30Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 18:31Speaker 2: There's one way I may be able to find out.
- 18:33Speaker 2: How's that by going down to headquarters and checking over
- 18:36Speaker 2: Riley's records. If I find a bullet like this has
- 18:38Speaker 2: figured in any recent crime, I'll know there's some connection
- 18:41Speaker 2: between that crime, the fifty two club, and the death
- 18:43Speaker 2: of Simonik News watchdog.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Ear January is well.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Nick, have you a phone what you're looking for? Yet?
- 18:59Speaker 2: I haven't, and I've studied every crime on your record
- 19:03Speaker 2: for the last six months. Just what he is this
- 19:05Speaker 2: case you're working on, Nick? He must be an important one.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Oh, I'm investigating the death of the watchdog.
- 19:10Speaker 2: A watchdog. Oh that's a hot one, Nick Carter, investigating
- 19:14Speaker 2: the death of a dog. I assure you joking, Nick.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I am not.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I believe a crime has been committed that we don't
- 19:20Speaker 2: know about, and that the dog's death is our only clue.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Is no to a crime nobody knows about, Nigga, Are
- 19:26Speaker 5: you sure you're feeling our right life?
- 19:27Speaker 2: This is no joking matter? Rally, I'm convinced. Oh here's Duck,
- 19:30Speaker 2: what is it?
- 19:31Speaker 3: Well?
- 19:31Speaker 2: I first my report on young Danny Cassell's death. It
- 19:34Speaker 2: was an accidental life and accident. And I assure you
- 19:36Speaker 2: that myself, Duck Danny Casle dead, the millionaire playboy. Yeah,
- 19:41Speaker 2: that's the one. Nick had a queer accident.
- 19:43Speaker 4: It was too He was killed by an old fashioned duel.
- 19:45Speaker 2: In pistols that he was cleaning. That's right, mister Carter,
- 19:48Speaker 2: an old fashioned muzzle loader. You certain that was an accident?
- 19:52Speaker 2: Why you certainly looked like one. But the body's downstairs
- 19:55Speaker 2: in the morgue. If you'd like to examine it yourself,
- 19:57Speaker 2: I'd like to very much, Riley, I've found what I'm
- 20:01Speaker 2: looking for you, Arnick. It's Danny Caswall's body.
- 20:17Speaker 3: And here's where the bullet entered his head, just below
- 20:19Speaker 3: the right eye.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Yes, I say his butler found him. Get in his
- 20:24Speaker 2: apartment this morning, Nick.
- 20:25Speaker 5: He was sitting in an easy chair and he had
- 20:27Speaker 5: an old fashioned jewel and pistol in his lap that
- 20:29Speaker 5: he'd been cleaning.
- 20:30Speaker 2: It must have gone off while he was been in ouvery,
- 20:32Speaker 2: and there were other old pistols around. The butler's had
- 20:34Speaker 2: a collected him and it certainly looked like accidental death.
- 20:38Speaker 2: About what time did casual die? I made it somewhere
- 20:41Speaker 2: between three and five am, rather late to be cleaning
- 20:44Speaker 2: a collection of old weapons. It is a tethnic See.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Do you think maybe it wasn't an accident.
- 20:49Speaker 3: I'm positive it wasn't. Look at the powder burn around
- 20:52Speaker 3: this womb.
- 20:53Speaker 2: What about it? Nick?
- 20:54Speaker 3: If you look close, you'll see it was made by
- 20:56Speaker 3: modern smokeless powder.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Say that's right, mister Carter.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Here's a few grains of unburned powder, em bettered than
- 21:02Speaker 3: the flesh.
- 21:02Speaker 4: What are you kidding that? Nick?
- 21:04Speaker 2: Did you bring the pistol that killed Cassle with you?
- 21:06Speaker 3: Doctor?
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yes? Here it is, miss carteron answer mm hm. An
- 21:09Speaker 2: old fashioned muzzle loading pistol made about a hundred years ago. Here,
- 21:14Speaker 2: look at the burned powder traces just inside the muzzle of.
- 21:17Speaker 3: The gun by George.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I see it now. The gun was loaded with old
- 21:20Speaker 2: fashioned black powder when it was fired, but the powder
- 21:23Speaker 2: burnwn Kaswle's body was made by modern smokeless powder exactly.
- 21:27Speaker 2: That means the bullet that killed Kassle, it's old fashioned
- 21:30Speaker 2: brown lead bawler took from the wound, was fired from
- 21:32Speaker 2: several feet away, several feet but these powder burns is
- 21:35Speaker 2: then a modern pistol loaded where a black cocket was
- 21:38Speaker 2: fired very close to the body, so the blank would
- 21:40Speaker 2: leave a powder burn around the wound. Then the whole
- 21:42Speaker 2: thing was a plant. Nick, That's what I'm getting at.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Kaswele was killed with this pistol right enough, and whoever
- 21:48Speaker 2: killed him managed to get his body into his apartment
- 21:50Speaker 2: and set the scene so the whole thing would look
- 21:52Speaker 2: like an accident. Mister Carter, I certainly hand it to you.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I was completely fooled. No, I know why someone was
- 21:57Speaker 2: so anxious to make sure I didn't get a look
- 21:59Speaker 2: at the bullet that kills I'm an agnus watchdog.
- 22:01Speaker 3: That bullet would have matched up with this one that
- 22:03Speaker 3: killed Danny Castle.
- 22:04Speaker 2: What does all this mean?
- 22:06Speaker 3: It means Danny Castle was killed out on the air
- 22:07Speaker 3: the fifty two Club last night.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Oh, but it's that caste to crime outside my territory.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I know it does, Riley, but it's not outside my territory.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I'm gonna follow this case to a finish. Good luck
- 22:18Speaker 2: to you, Unique. As soon as it's dark, I'm gonna
- 22:20Speaker 2: pick up Scubby and pay another visit to the fifty
- 22:22Speaker 2: two Club.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Nick, is that the fifty two Club very ahead of us?
- 22:40Speaker 3: That's it? Gosh, it certainly looks mysterious in the moonlight,
- 22:44Speaker 3: like a miniature castle. Yes, Patsy said almost the same
- 22:48Speaker 3: thing this morning. Patsy certainly was sorry you wouldn't let
- 22:51Speaker 3: her come with it tonight. I couldn't. Maybe danger under
- 22:56Speaker 3: the club seems deserted from here. Yeah, there is a
- 23:00Speaker 3: i'm a light showing.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Hey, do you think that managed?
- 23:03Speaker 3: Your fellow Howard ken is run for it?
- 23:04Speaker 5: Me?
- 23:05Speaker 3: I was probably decided to play a love for a while. Anyway,
- 23:09Speaker 3: here's the dross empty. There were anyone here? There sertin
- 23:16Speaker 3: to be a car around. Well, then we could have
- 23:18Speaker 3: driven straight up here instead of hiding the car down
- 23:20Speaker 3: in the wood peck. There never hurts to play safe, Kelly.
- 23:22Speaker 3: H you're right, Nick, Not here's the terrace. Theyk it'll
- 23:26Speaker 3: be safe to use our flashlights. Now it's okay. Say
- 23:30Speaker 3: what is it?
- 23:31Speaker 7: Me?
- 23:31Speaker 10: What are you shining your light on the terrace for
- 23:34Speaker 10: this morning? Camp's assistant was mopping this particular part of
- 23:37Speaker 10: the terrace and he ah, here we are.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah, what is it?
- 23:41Speaker 10: The tiles have been mopped clean, but here's a stain
- 23:44Speaker 10: on this bit of moss between these two tiles.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right. What made it?
- 23:50Speaker 2: Nick?
- 23:50Speaker 3: I don't miss my guess. Blood? Blood, ask Kelly.
- 23:56Speaker 10: I have a hunch this is the spot where Danny
- 23:58Speaker 10: Casull died last night, and I think it was murdering it.
- 24:01Speaker 10: Unless I'm very much mistaken, Scubby, it was deliberate and
- 24:03Speaker 10: cold blooded murder. Come on, I wanna get inside, shure right, Nick?
- 24:07Speaker 3: Oh, here's a door. Oh it's a lot. Let's see
- 24:11Speaker 3: if one of my KEEO. No, not that one. I
- 24:17Speaker 3: can try. Uh you'll read alright, come on, He'kscubby. Shall
- 24:25Speaker 3: I turn on the light? No, No, I don't wanna.
- 24:28Speaker 3: There's that flashlight. Gosh, this is a big room. What
- 24:32Speaker 3: are the size of that fireplace there? Yes? Huge, isn't Yeah? He'scubby.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Look at those old guns in the wall above the fireplace.
- 24:41Speaker 3: That's a second. I wanna have a closer look at boat.
- 24:45Speaker 2: See, Nick, They all look as if they were a
- 24:47Speaker 2: hundred years old, most of them are.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Who care, scubby woo. There's nothing there, Nick, just two
- 24:54Speaker 3: empty bracket.
- 24:55Speaker 10: Exactly two brackets, just the right size to have held
- 24:58Speaker 10: the two dueling pistols that were found and Danny Taswoll's
- 25:01Speaker 10: apartment and the dusty outline over eats Brackett is the
- 25:04Speaker 10: same size and shape as those pistols. Gosh, Nick, that's right.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I can't prove it, jest Gubby, but I have a
- 25:09Speaker 2: hunch that Kaswell was here last night and was deliberately
- 25:12Speaker 2: loaded into a duel in which the two old dueling
- 25:14Speaker 2: pistols which used to be part of this collection were used.
- 25:17Speaker 2: But certainly looks slightly Kaswell's opponent, whoever it was, killed Danny.
- 25:22Speaker 10: But Danny's bullet missed and went down the hill to
- 25:24Speaker 10: kill Simon Agnes's watchdog.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Who the good thing Agne asked you to investigate the
- 25:28Speaker 3: dog's death. Isn't it not for the man who killed Kaswell,
- 25:31Speaker 3: it isn't he, Miscubby. Who did you hear anything? Then? No, Nick,
- 25:37Speaker 3: I didn't I heard a footstep in the next room.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Well maybe it was wrong.
- 25:42Speaker 4: I must do Shubby, watch out, we're pulling.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Nick and Scubby have apparently stumbled on a mystery far
- 25:58Speaker 2: stranger than Nick ever dreamed of. Old Simon Agnew asked
- 26:01Speaker 2: him to investigate the death of his watchdog, and what
- 26:03Speaker 2: has happened to them now in the strange and sinister
- 26:05Speaker 2: fifty two club, which they thought deserted. Listen tomorrow. The
