- 1:10Speaker 1: You know. If you are, definitely stick around, but it
- 1:13Speaker 1: might not be what you think.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Just aheads up, man, oh man. All right, hey Patriots fans,
- 1:20Speaker 2: if you want to see Toyota's best offers, including those
- 1:22Speaker 2: not seen on TV, go to buy Toyota dot com.
- 1:25Speaker 2: It's Toyota's official website for deals from the official vehicle
- 1:28Speaker 2: the New England Patriots, Toyota let's go places and easy
- 1:31Speaker 2: to drink, easy to enjoy. But like the official beer
- 1:34Speaker 2: sponsor of the New England Patriots, I joke, we joke.
- 1:37Speaker 2: We can joke about it now, I feel like, but
- 1:40Speaker 2: I don't want to talk too much about it. But
- 1:42Speaker 2: like you said, that's not even what this show is about.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Like that's the part that makes me regret it as
- 1:48Speaker 2: much as anything is. Like we are in X's and
- 1:50Speaker 2: O's football junkies type of show, and we usually leave
- 1:55Speaker 2: that kind of stuff to the frankly, your station and
- 2:00Speaker 2: other places that that do that kind of thing. And
- 2:04Speaker 2: in the one time that I dip my toes into
- 2:06Speaker 2: into that water, it totally backfires. So good job by me.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So now I've acknowledged it. Okay, all right, now we
- 2:13Speaker 2: acknowledge it.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Uh.
- 2:15Speaker 2: The other thing that you know that's more important than
- 2:17Speaker 2: that is, uh, Drake May. Finally we get to see
- 2:20Speaker 2: Drake May as the Patriots starting quarterback this week on
- 2:24Speaker 2: Sunday against the Texans. Alex, There's a lot to unpack
- 2:27Speaker 2: about this because the timing of it is a big story.
- 2:32Speaker 2: How Drake May looks on Sunday is a big story,
- 2:35Speaker 2: The matchup is a big story. I want to start
- 2:38Speaker 2: it here, and based off of last week, I don't
- 2:42Speaker 2: always carry the team's water, okay, uh, But the biggest
- 2:46Speaker 2: thing that I want to say about this to me,
- 2:48Speaker 2: in terms of the timing, I feel as though there's
- 2:51Speaker 2: a lot of conversations Alex about how this was done
- 2:57Speaker 2: hastily or they kind of deviated from plan here because
- 3:02Speaker 2: it did seem like they wanted him to sit and
- 3:04Speaker 2: watch for a while before getting him in there. But
- 3:08Speaker 2: I just I want to bring hard evidence to the
- 3:10Speaker 2: show today about this because this is just my opinion,
- 3:15Speaker 2: and I want to preface it that way that this
- 3:17Speaker 2: is just my opinion that I don't feel as though
- 3:19Speaker 2: that this was knee jerk or a pivot away from
- 3:22Speaker 2: the plan per se. The plan might have changed or
- 3:26Speaker 2: might have been altered along the way, and there were
- 3:29Speaker 2: two big pieces of that, and Alex van Pelt today
- 3:33Speaker 2: I think broke it down pretty bluntly. Of those two pieces,
- 3:36Speaker 2: one the Patriots offense that is thirty first in the
- 3:39Speaker 2: league in scoring. Let's also not forget the Miami Dolphins,
- 3:42Speaker 2: who are thirty second don't have their quarterback. So really,
- 3:45Speaker 2: the Patriots are the worst offense in the NFL in
- 3:47Speaker 2: terms of scoring. They're the worst offense in the NFL
- 3:49Speaker 2: in terms.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Dolphins also just outscored them head to head.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, they're the worst offense in football in terms of
- 3:54Speaker 2: passing yards at one hundred and nineteen per game. They
- 3:57Speaker 2: have yet to throw for over one hundred and fifty
- 3:58Speaker 2: yards in a game. That's a big part of it.
- 4:01Speaker 2: The other part of it is what Drake may has
- 4:04Speaker 2: been doing behind the scenes at practice, and that we've
- 4:07Speaker 2: heard tangible evidence even before they made this decision about that.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So I wanted to read a couple of quotes from you.
- 4:15Speaker 2: These were from September twenty seventh. This was two weeks
- 4:17Speaker 2: ago when we spoke to the Patriots defensive assistant coaches.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I don't know if it was the day before the
- 4:23Speaker 2: same day, Drod Mayo had a press conference where he
- 4:27Speaker 2: was asked about Drake May's progress and was really glowing
- 4:31Speaker 2: with his praise of it. You know, he was like, yeah,
- 4:34Speaker 2: it's really gotten a lot better last couple weeks in
- 4:38Speaker 2: a month or so. So here was Drew Wilkins, the
- 4:42Speaker 2: Patriots outside linebackers coach. He has such a good understanding.
- 4:46Speaker 2: This is about Drake May. He has such a good
- 4:47Speaker 2: understanding of different schemes and what people are doing. For
- 4:50Speaker 2: a rookie in this league. It's like he's been around
- 4:53Speaker 2: a long time and seeing a lot of offenses, seen
- 4:55Speaker 2: a lot of quarterbacks. I think he is unique in
- 4:57Speaker 2: that way, Like that's not something that's very common the league.
- 5:00Speaker 2: That's a guy that's conscientious. He wants to know about
- 5:04Speaker 2: a team's protection rules, for the scout team, things like that,
- 5:07Speaker 2: Like these are rare traits. Mike Pellegrino, who's been around
- 5:11Speaker 2: the Patriots, he pointed to a specific throw in practice
- 5:15Speaker 2: that really stood out to me. I remember one specifically
- 5:19Speaker 2: that I went the next day and was like, I
- 5:20Speaker 2: hate you. That was a great throw. He's doing a
- 5:22Speaker 2: good job so far. He stuck one in between tight
- 5:25Speaker 2: coverage on a new call that we had a couple
- 5:27Speaker 2: of weeks ago. It was like, I really wish he
- 5:30Speaker 2: hadn't made that throw, but you did. My point of
- 5:32Speaker 2: reading these quotes is that this was bubbling behind the scenes,
- 5:37Speaker 2: that Drake May was making some real strides in practice
- 5:40Speaker 2: and starting to push the Patriots for playing time. So
- 5:44Speaker 2: when you couple that with the fact that he also
- 5:48Speaker 2: was watching an offense that was stagnant, that was sputtering,
- 5:51Speaker 2: that was going nowhere, you add those two things together
- 5:55Speaker 2: and I don't think that this was a knee jerk reaction.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I don't think this was a pr move. I don't
- 6:00Speaker 2: think it was anything the farious like that. I truly
- 6:03Speaker 2: believe that Drake May pushed the coaches to this point.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He broke through the door, right and part of that
- 6:12Speaker 2: is because of what's going on with the offense with
- 6:14Speaker 2: Jacobe Brissett. But what I was trying to get at
- 6:17Speaker 2: last week, and you know, before we went off the
- 6:20Speaker 2: rails a little bit, Eventually, when those types of things
- 6:24Speaker 2: are happening, when what's happening on Sundays is happening, and
- 6:27Speaker 2: then what's happening behind the scenes, you know, based off
- 6:30Speaker 2: of what we were being told by the coaches and
- 6:32Speaker 2: things like that, then eventually it's not going to pass
- 6:35Speaker 2: the sniff test. In the in the locker room right
- 6:37Speaker 2: where they're one and four, they're lost four in a row,
- 6:40Speaker 2: they can't score any points offensively, and Drake May is
- 6:44Speaker 2: making these strides behind the scenes. Eventually the rookie has
- 6:48Speaker 2: got a place. So is it maybe a couple of
- 6:51Speaker 2: weeks earlier, Like I remember, you know, Burpree or other
- 6:54Speaker 2: people have thrown out November was kind of more in
- 6:57Speaker 2: their purview of when this might happen. You know, we
- 6:59Speaker 2: could go two weeks ago, maybe a week or two early.
- 7:04Speaker 2: But at the same time this was coming. I don't
- 7:06Speaker 2: think that this was like we're sitting him from the
- 7:08Speaker 2: whole year. Oh whoh, now we're one and four in
- 7:11Speaker 2: our offense. Thinks now we're making this change.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Well, I'll give you even a piece of evidence that
- 7:14Speaker 1: suggests maybe this a little later than they wanted to
- 7:17Speaker 1: do it. And this this came out Thursday, right after
- 7:20Speaker 1: our show, I Rapaport on NFL Network. Quote so it said,
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know, the Patriots are gonna start to cover set
- 7:27Speaker 1: this weekend'st the Dolphins. That said, it is still clear
- 7:31Speaker 1: to some point that Drake May is going to play.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It just got a little complicated this week. It is
- 7:36Speaker 1: talking about last week. David Andrews is out for the
- 7:38Speaker 1: season with the shoulder injury. They want when Drake May
- 7:41Speaker 1: is out there, to put him in a position to succeed.
- 7:43Speaker 1: They want to make sure that he is not only ready,
- 7:46Speaker 1: but someone who can hit the ground running and not
- 7:48Speaker 1: have his growth stunted by a team around him offensively
- 7:51Speaker 1: that really has struggled a little bit. That to me
- 7:54Speaker 1: sounds like they maybe wanted to start him last week,
- 7:57Speaker 1: but then you lose David Andrews and it's well, we
- 7:59Speaker 1: have no idea what we're going to get at center
- 8:00Speaker 1: and we can't subject the kid to that, which, by
- 8:02Speaker 1: the way, right call, right call, if that was the case.
- 8:04Speaker 1: But you know, I kind of read that last week
- 8:08Speaker 1: and was like, oh, so they like they're ready, they're
- 8:12Speaker 1: just waiting on the line, and I you know, last
- 8:15Speaker 1: week we'll talk about what the line was. But it
- 8:17Speaker 1: was again the word I keep using is better. I
- 8:20Speaker 1: don't know that it was good, but it was better.
- 8:22Speaker 1: And more importantly, everybody got out of that game healthy.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And it seems like they're going to be able to
- 8:27Speaker 1: start the same five for the second week in a
- 8:29Speaker 1: row for the first time this season, and not just
- 8:31Speaker 1: the same five. It's going to be the first time
- 8:34Speaker 1: they start the same tackle combination right back to back
- 8:37Speaker 1: weeks this year. So you know when you put that
- 8:39Speaker 1: together again, is it a week or two too early.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Maybe we walked out of the stadium Sunday night and
- 8:44Speaker 1: I said to you, I don't know that he needs
- 8:46Speaker 1: to play against Houston, but you got to start the
- 8:49Speaker 1: ramp up period this week at the very least. Yeah,
- 8:51Speaker 1: And if that means Jacksonville, that means the Jets. Whatever.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But yeah, I don't think this was is and it
- 9:00Speaker 1: sooner than maybe they thought it was back in like
- 9:02Speaker 1: July or August. Maybe, Yeah, but I do think that,
- 9:07Speaker 1: like you said, May was putting the pressure on to
- 9:09Speaker 1: make the change.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah. I just the two things that I've heard heard
- 9:13Speaker 2: a lot about since this move was made are either
- 9:18Speaker 2: they went away from the plane or they didn't have
- 9:21Speaker 2: a plan and they're just fine by the seat of
- 9:22Speaker 2: their pants, or the Texans. You can't play them against
- 9:27Speaker 2: the Texans like this too. This defense is too good.
- 9:29Speaker 2: This is a bad matchup. Can't play them against the Texans.
- 9:32Speaker 2: To the first point about the plan, I don't think
- 9:35Speaker 2: the plan was ever set in stone. We are going
- 9:40Speaker 2: to sit him the whole year or his window is
- 9:45Speaker 2: week eight and on you know, just the second half
- 9:48Speaker 2: of the season. We're not going to play him sooner
- 9:50Speaker 2: than that when and look, they've held the plan really
- 9:53Speaker 2: close to the vest. I don't know at all exactly
- 9:56Speaker 2: what the plan was, but when they talked about it,
- 9:59Speaker 2: they were it sounded to me more like it was
- 10:02Speaker 2: football benchmarks, like was he handling blitzes, was he getting
- 10:06Speaker 2: them in and out of the plays? Was he getting
- 10:08Speaker 2: them in and out of the huddle, was he you know,
- 10:10Speaker 2: going through his reads and making the right decisions in practice?
- 10:13Speaker 1: Like and I think to benchmarks with the team right,
- 10:16Speaker 1: like where's the offensive line at who's helped him? He's
- 10:18Speaker 1: playing well? So that's there's not a I'm with you there.
- 10:22Speaker 1: You can't put a week to that.
- 10:26Speaker 2: It didn't feel to me like the plan was exactly
- 10:29Speaker 2: like they like they had put a week to it
- 10:31Speaker 2: or a timeframe to it. It felt me to me
- 10:33Speaker 2: more like when he clears these hurdles, when he you know,
- 10:36Speaker 2: checks off these boxes, will know that he's ready to play.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And at this point we we will see what it
- 10:42Speaker 2: looks like on Sunday, but we have to trust the
- 10:45Speaker 2: coaches that he's ready, Like they're the ones that are
- 10:48Speaker 2: getting paid to do this. They're the ones that are
- 10:51Speaker 2: seeing him every single day. We have to trust the
- 10:54Speaker 2: coaches for now. Now on Sunday, if he if he
- 10:56Speaker 2: plays poorly and it's it's clear that he's in over
- 10:59Speaker 2: his head and he wasn't ready, I'm not going to
- 11:01Speaker 2: come here and kill the kid in his first career start.
- 11:03Speaker 2: But we'll be honest about it. We'll say, you know,
- 11:05Speaker 2: maybe it was a little premature.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Well I'll say this, and I want this take on
- 11:09Speaker 1: the record before anything happens, and it's on the record.
- 11:11Speaker 1: It's very much on the record. Yeah, just don't let
- 11:15Speaker 1: this take get you too riled up, because I know
- 11:16Speaker 1: it does. One Strake Mays in one May he's in. Yeah,
- 11:21Speaker 1: it's like, this is it. You're right, this was the
- 11:23Speaker 1: whole start of the whole thing. So yeah, that's what
- 11:25Speaker 1: I said. The take you had before that was just nonsense.
- 11:29Speaker 1: But that take won't happen now. One Strake Mayson he's in,
- 11:33Speaker 1: you know, pending injury. Obviously he gets hurt, but like
- 11:36Speaker 1: you're not in a week and two weeks. Oh, we're wrong,
- 11:39Speaker 1: he's not ready. We're going back to Jacobras Like you
- 11:42Speaker 1: can't do that. You create a worse situation. So and
- 11:47Speaker 1: we can talk about it more later, Evan, I kind
- 11:49Speaker 1: of suggested to you a little game we can play
- 11:50Speaker 1: with this. But and as it relates to his first start,
- 11:54Speaker 1: I don't if I'm getting ahead of things here, but
- 11:57Speaker 1: my expectations are not super high. Yeah, that's not anything
- 12:02Speaker 1: about Drake made the prospect, that's not anything about the
- 12:06Speaker 1: draft pick. It's just you look around the league. Caleb
- 12:10Speaker 1: Williams did not start well. Jane Daniels was fine in
- 12:15Speaker 1: his really his first two starts, it was fine, but
- 12:17Speaker 1: he was not spectacular by any means. Bo Nicks was not.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I'll even throw bow Nick in here, and you know
- 12:22Speaker 1: how much that kills me. Bo Nicks started playing better.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Was not good in his first couple starts. You look
- 12:28Speaker 1: at you know, early starts, guys had the last years.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Every once in a while you have a rookie quarterback
- 12:33Speaker 1: that just boom, just like arrives on the scene and
- 12:37Speaker 1: hits it. But you know there's gonna be growing pains.
- 12:40Speaker 1: It doesn't mean it's gonna be all bad. But again,
- 12:43Speaker 1: we had to it later, kind of comparing him to
- 12:44Speaker 1: some some past Patriot State hues. But yeah, like I
- 12:50Speaker 1: fully expect to come in here next week having to
- 12:51Speaker 1: sort through a lot with him.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah, the second thing that I mentioned, and then I
- 12:55Speaker 2: want to talk about the real ex's and osen football
- 12:58Speaker 2: of it. The second thing that I mentioned was picking
- 13:03Speaker 2: the Texans week. Like this defense that is third in
- 13:06Speaker 2: the league in DVA, number one in pressure rate, excellent
- 13:10Speaker 2: pass defense that's coming in with two edge rushers and
- 13:13Speaker 2: Will Anderson and Daniel Hunter that are given everybody fits.
- 13:16Speaker 2: There's no doubt about it that this is a tough matchup.
- 13:18Speaker 2: This is a hey, rookie, welcome to the NFL type
- 13:22Speaker 2: of situation. This is throwing him into the fire a
- 13:25Speaker 2: little bit. But with that being said, we were all
- 13:29Speaker 2: in agreement. I shouldn't say were all in agreement. I
- 13:32Speaker 2: don't think that if he had started his last week
- 13:35Speaker 2: against Miami there would be quite the uproar. And I
- 13:39Speaker 2: also don't think that there would be quite the uproar
- 13:42Speaker 2: if he started next week in London against Jacksonville, because
- 13:46Speaker 2: everybody would say those are two reeling teams or two
- 13:50Speaker 2: bad teams, two bad defenses. So basically, when I tweeted
- 13:54Speaker 2: this out earlier, like what we're getting at is is
- 13:57Speaker 2: that we think that one game is going to ruin
- 14:02Speaker 2: Drake May, Like he's gonna get out there against Houston,
- 14:05Speaker 2: and if he goes nine for thirty like Josh Allen
- 14:08Speaker 2: did last week against this defense, that all of a sudden,
- 14:11Speaker 2: his entire career is going to be derailed. And my
- 14:15Speaker 2: response to you know, maybe that's an exaggeration of what
- 14:17Speaker 2: people are saying, but that's the crux, right, And my
- 14:21Speaker 2: response to that would just be in two to three
- 14:24Speaker 2: years from now, Yeah, when we're looking back on all this,
- 14:29Speaker 2: if Drake May, let's say success or fails, right like,
- 14:33Speaker 2: whatever happens boom or bust, are we going to look
- 14:36Speaker 2: back on it and say, well, if they had just
- 14:39Speaker 2: like waited two more weeks his rookie season, he would
- 14:41Speaker 2: have been good, right Like, or if we had just waited,
- 14:44Speaker 2: you go, oh, well, they could have started him week
- 14:46Speaker 2: one his rookie year and maybe they would have been
- 14:48Speaker 2: a super Bowl team, you know what I mean? Like, right,
- 14:50Speaker 2: it's not going to matter in the grand scheme of
- 14:52Speaker 2: things in two years, I.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Mean it can because objectively it doesn't matter when you
- 14:56Speaker 1: start him, right, But it's not gonna be about the opponent.
- 14:59Speaker 1: It's going to be is he ready when they put
- 15:01Speaker 1: him in? Look, I don't love the Texans as a
- 15:03Speaker 1: landing spot, but like you said, I don't love the
- 15:07Speaker 1: Jaguars because it's in London. The Jets bring you know,
- 15:11Speaker 1: that's not exactly an easy defense either. Then you got
- 15:14Speaker 1: to go on the road. There's some people who think
- 15:15Speaker 1: the first start would be at home, like you're gonna
- 15:17Speaker 1: be able to pick a problem with it wherever. I
- 15:20Speaker 1: said back in May, there was only one game that
- 15:24Speaker 1: I didn't want to be his first start, and that
- 15:26Speaker 1: was San Francisco. Well, there were two. It was the
- 15:28Speaker 1: first Jets game short week, but it was never gonna
- 15:30Speaker 1: be that anyway, and then San Francisco. So is it
- 15:33Speaker 1: the best landing spot? No, is there a good landing spot,
- 15:38Speaker 1: Not necessarily, and it's definitely not the worst possible landing spot.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I would so much rather him start in his spot
- 15:44Speaker 1: then have to go into San Francisco against that team
- 15:47Speaker 1: that was pissed off coming off a bad loss. And
- 15:50Speaker 1: I mean we saw what that pass rushed in that game.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Right with tackles out of position, it could be a
- 15:57Speaker 1: lot worse, I guess, is my point. It's not you
- 15:59Speaker 1: don't have to love it, But I don't think it's
- 16:01Speaker 1: it's not disqualifying to start him in this spot.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think it's it's a little bit. I
- 16:07Speaker 2: think this whole the whole reaction to this is a
- 16:10Speaker 2: little nitpicky, And I get it. Girodmeo is a first
- 16:13Speaker 2: time head coach. He's going to be scrutinized by what
- 16:18Speaker 2: he does. But there was so many people before this
- 16:23Speaker 2: decision was made. Every Monday every week on this show
- 16:29Speaker 2: for the first four or five weeks of the season
- 16:32Speaker 2: that we just came in here on this show. I'll
- 16:34Speaker 2: just talk about our show for the first four weeks
- 16:38Speaker 2: and just went scorched earth. On the offense, it wasn't
- 16:44Speaker 2: at times an unwatchable product Offensively, they couldn't pass the ball.
- 16:50Speaker 2: They were I was on a VP, I was on Jacoby,
- 16:53Speaker 2: we were on the line like every you know, all
- 16:55Speaker 2: these things, and then they do something that should improve
- 16:59Speaker 2: the offense and should be exciting for the offense and
- 17:02Speaker 2: for the fan base and for all of it, and
- 17:05Speaker 2: then now that's not the right move, right, So, like
- 17:07Speaker 2: they were in a no win situation if they kept
- 17:09Speaker 2: on playing Burssett and they kept on the offense, kept
- 17:13Speaker 2: looking like this, which why would definition of insanity, like,
- 17:16Speaker 2: why would it change miraculously that all of a sudden
- 17:19Speaker 2: they had a viable NFL offense with the personnel that
- 17:21Speaker 2: they were rolling out there. If they kept on doing
- 17:23Speaker 2: that and they kept on losing, then Girodmeo and this
- 17:26Speaker 2: whole regime would get killed for doing that. And now
- 17:29Speaker 2: they're getting killed for playing Drake May.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And I think that game showed them too. Maybe part
- 17:33Speaker 1: of it, like they got decent offensive line play and
- 17:36Speaker 1: that didn't fix enough. And so maybe that also is
- 17:40Speaker 1: part of the impetus of all right, you know we
- 17:44Speaker 1: actually had I thought that that game was a decent
- 17:49Speaker 1: quarterback environment, right like I didn't. It wasn't perfect, but
- 17:54Speaker 1: I thought there were more opportunities there for Burssett than
- 17:56Speaker 1: there had been past games. He's still don't capitalize on them.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Yeah. So the other point I wanted to make, just
- 18:02Speaker 2: to kind of move forward here from my soapbox, is
- 18:05Speaker 2: just about where we go from here with Drake May
- 18:10Speaker 2: as the quarterback. And to me, this is the clock
- 18:15Speaker 2: starts ticking right now on Alex Van Pelt and the
- 18:18Speaker 2: coaching staff because you no longer have the excuse of well,
- 18:25Speaker 2: we're limited. We're limited at quarterback, we're limited at offensive line.
- 18:30Speaker 2: We don't really have all the full deck. Nope, Like,
- 18:34Speaker 2: this is your guy, this is your guy moving forward.
- 18:36Speaker 2: He is under center, now, he is playing, he's in
- 18:38Speaker 2: the cockpit, like, this is your quarterback. So when I
- 18:41Speaker 2: look at van Pelt specifically, I really need to see
- 18:45Speaker 2: something from van Pelt on Sunday because you cannot tell
- 18:48Speaker 2: me that him and McAdoo and this whole staff. Since
- 18:52Speaker 2: the Patriots put the card in or whatever, it's a
- 18:54Speaker 2: phone call. Now, I think it's a pick line right
- 18:56Speaker 2: with the on the draft night. Wait, the physical card anymore,
- 18:59Speaker 2: I don't think. So that's kind of a bummer they do
- 19:03Speaker 2: with the commissioner, so that I think. Anyways, when they
- 19:08Speaker 2: made the pick on was it April twenty sixth or
- 19:11Speaker 2: April twenty seventh or something like that, any offensive coach
- 19:15Speaker 2: is immediately thinking of one hundred different things that we
- 19:18Speaker 2: can do with this guy, right, like what's the scheme?
- 19:20Speaker 2: You know, look at Cliff Kingsbury and Washington.
- 19:24Speaker 3: You know.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Immediately I'm sure he's thinking, let's install as many LSU
- 19:29Speaker 2: concepts as we can, Like, let's Jayden gonna want to
- 19:32Speaker 2: run what's he comfortable with, you know, And they're building
- 19:34Speaker 2: an offense a playbook around the quarterback and around the
- 19:38Speaker 2: new quarterback. The same should be going on right now
- 19:41Speaker 2: with the Patriots, Like what is Drake May's favorite concepts
- 19:45Speaker 2: or what's the type of offense he wants to run?
- 19:47Speaker 2: What are the bells and whistles we want to put
- 19:49Speaker 2: into that offense? And now I really think that we
- 19:53Speaker 2: start to truly evaluate the offensive coaching. I understand, and
- 19:59Speaker 2: maybe your problem or the situational football guy than I am.
- 20:03Speaker 2: He's been under fire by some of the situational play
- 20:05Speaker 2: calls yea end of the first half last week, things
- 20:08Speaker 2: like that. But I'm more talking as I normally do,
- 20:11Speaker 2: about the actual play design x's and o's of it.
- 20:15Speaker 4: You know.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I think right now, one of the things that has
- 20:17Speaker 2: been one of my pet peeves about the Van Pelt
- 20:20Speaker 2: offense is the lack of scheme related conflict that he
- 20:24Speaker 2: puts in the defense. So what is he doing to
- 20:27Speaker 2: help his players execute the plays? They are thirty first
- 20:31Speaker 2: in the league in play action rate right now, second
- 20:34Speaker 2: to last, thirty first in the league. Now you could
- 20:36Speaker 2: sit there and say, well, they don't have the line
- 20:38Speaker 2: and they don't have the blocking to hold up, and
- 20:40Speaker 2: that's why they're not running. Play action is one of
- 20:43Speaker 2: the easiest ways to help receivers create separation and get
- 20:46Speaker 2: open down the field. You don't have great receivers run
- 20:50Speaker 2: play action, like run some of these bells and whistles
- 20:53Speaker 2: to help them out. They are and I know this
- 20:56Speaker 2: has been a big topic. They're twenty seventh in the
- 20:58Speaker 2: league in motion at the snap right twenty seventh, towards
- 21:02Speaker 2: the bottom of the league in that statistic. They are
- 21:05Speaker 2: third in the league in spread formation rate. So they
- 21:08Speaker 2: right now they are four or five wide, they're spreading
- 21:10Speaker 2: the field, and they're running a bunch of stagnant isolation routes,
- 21:14Speaker 2: like nobody's moving at the snap. There's no stacks, there's
- 21:17Speaker 2: no bunches, it's just four guys across the formation at
- 21:20Speaker 2: the receiver spots. Run a rout right in. If he's
- 21:27Speaker 2: going to get Drake may gooing and they're gonna get
- 21:28Speaker 2: this offense going. And a lot of this falls on
- 21:31Speaker 2: Van Pell too. And I want to give you one
- 21:32Speaker 2: example of this from Sunday. There's a play in Sunday's
- 21:37Speaker 2: game third and eight third quarter, and all they're getting
- 21:41Speaker 2: is blitzman on third down. Everybody's bringing man pressure on
- 21:44Speaker 2: third down. It's what the book that is out on.
- 21:47Speaker 2: The Patriots play Manta man coverage, blitz the quarterback to
- 21:51Speaker 2: overwhelm the offensive line. They don't have the quarterback that
- 21:54Speaker 2: makes the decisions. They don't have the receivers to get
- 21:56Speaker 2: the separation. So what does Vampel call. He calls all curls.
- 22:02Speaker 2: There's four guys that go into the pattern and they're
- 22:04Speaker 2: all running curls. There's no motion, there's no picks, there's
- 22:09Speaker 2: no rubs, there's no in cut, nothing, just run to
- 22:13Speaker 2: the sticks and turn around and hopefully the ball will
- 22:15Speaker 2: get to you. So what ends up happening is, you know,
- 22:18Speaker 2: they blitz, they get some pressure on Berset. He throws
- 22:21Speaker 2: low to Austin Hooper over the middle in the dirt
- 22:24Speaker 2: field goal. Right, that's a big swing in the game.
- 22:27Speaker 2: That's the difference between fourteen to three and ten to
- 22:29Speaker 2: three in that football game. So you have guys like
- 22:33Speaker 2: Pop Douglas, you have guy like you know, running backs
- 22:36Speaker 2: out of the backfield that can create some separation out
- 22:39Speaker 2: of the backfield against man to man. Where is the
- 22:43Speaker 2: bells and whistles, like where are the picks, where are
- 22:45Speaker 2: the rubs? Where are the motions into the stacks and
- 22:48Speaker 2: the bunches? Snap the football, get them some free releases,
- 22:52Speaker 2: get them some separation down the field. There's not enough
- 22:55Speaker 2: of that right now in this offense. And this is
- 22:57Speaker 2: the last thing I would say. It's on him to
- 23:00Speaker 2: adapt the offense to Drake May. If Drake May is
- 23:03Speaker 2: not comfortable in an NFL game right now to run
- 23:05Speaker 2: a ton of under center, then they need to find
- 23:08Speaker 2: an adaptation. Like they need to adapt to that, whether
- 23:11Speaker 2: it's pistol, whether it's just gun run, whatever the case
- 23:14Speaker 2: may be. You can't just jam a square hole into
- 23:18Speaker 2: a round peg because your offense is an under center offense.
- 23:21Speaker 1: You can't jam a hole into a peg. So it's
- 23:24Speaker 1: not pegan a hole, peg into a hole. Yeah, he
- 23:27Speaker 1: said hole into a peg.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Square peg, round hole.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Yeah, there were you just like the worst at preschool?
- 23:33Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 23:33Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, okay, come on, just making sure you took
- 23:36Speaker 1: literally the whole toy, hitting the one piece ystead of
- 23:39Speaker 1: the round.
- 23:40Speaker 2: I like how you ended my rant with that. If
- 23:44Speaker 2: he doesn't want to be under center, then then adapt
- 23:49Speaker 2: like find a different way to run your run game.
- 23:52Speaker 2: If they run pistol, I've already said this to you. Yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 2: if they put Drake May in the pistol on Sunday,
- 23:57Speaker 2: it's gonna be pants off in the press box for me.
- 23:58Speaker 2: I'm gonna be pumped, Like, Yes, finally it was some innovation,
- 24:02Speaker 2: Like we did something new, we did something different, we
- 24:04Speaker 2: did something to adapt to our players. That's a big
- 24:07Speaker 2: thing for me right now, more so than all this
- 24:10Speaker 2: other drama about is it the right time or anything
- 24:12Speaker 2: like that. What does Van Pelt do now that he
- 24:16Speaker 2: has the Ferrari out of the garage?
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yeah, And this goes to a bigger point for me,
- 24:22Speaker 1: which is like the quarterback change isn't just about Drake May.
- 24:25Speaker 1: You know, it's Drake May. We're gonna see what he
- 24:28Speaker 1: can do, right, And that's obviously something to focus on.
- 24:31Speaker 1: But the other thing is like there's other guys that
- 24:34Speaker 1: are now in the spotlight more either because you know
- 24:38Speaker 1: they're crucial to May's success, are also just like, all right,
- 24:42Speaker 1: so Drake May is the future, right, this is who
- 24:43Speaker 1: you're ideally building around. Is there anybody on this current team?
- 24:47Speaker 1: And I think there's a couple of guys who, at
- 24:48Speaker 1: least during a conversation of people roll their eyes at this.
- 24:51Speaker 1: But who on the current team are you building? Is
- 24:54Speaker 1: going to stay here and build with them? Right? And
- 24:57Speaker 1: so I wrote about this on ninety five sportsub dot
- 24:59Speaker 1: com got Pop Douglas right, what's their chemistry look like?
- 25:02Speaker 1: Where are they at together? But I think the biggest
- 25:05Speaker 1: the person most impacted by this, who's not Drake mayor
- 25:09Speaker 1: Jakobe Rissett, is Alex van Pelt. Yeah, and like you said,
- 25:14Speaker 1: you know, did the offense look great over the first
- 25:16Speaker 1: five weeks. No, But I don't really care about whether
- 25:20Speaker 1: or not Alex van Pelt can design an offense for
- 25:21Speaker 1: Jacoby Brissett. It's just it's not relevant to me in
- 25:26Speaker 1: the long term. I do care very much what his
- 25:28Speaker 1: offense for Drake May looks like. And even if Drake
- 25:32Speaker 1: May's playing well, if it looks like the offense, you
- 25:35Speaker 1: got into a ton of schematic stuff there. The pistol
- 25:37Speaker 1: stuff is the big one for me as well. But like,
- 25:40Speaker 1: even if Drake May's playing relatively well, but we're just like, ah,
- 25:43Speaker 1: the offense doesn't make sense. It's kind of holding them back,
- 25:45Speaker 1: Like can these two co exist because if they can't,
- 25:50Speaker 1: the organization's not moving on from the third overall pick. Right,
- 25:54Speaker 1: So I thought you put it in a good way.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Alex man pelt on the clock. His future won't be
- 25:59Speaker 1: just I did this Sunday, sure, but there is an
- 26:03Speaker 1: element of now, all right, this guy is the future
- 26:06Speaker 1: of the franchise. Can you make it work with him?
- 26:08Speaker 1: Because if you can't, we need to find somebody else
- 26:11Speaker 1: who can.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I've been pretty hard on Van Pell as you know,
- 26:15Speaker 2: on this show. I just don't feel like he's done
- 26:17Speaker 2: enough schematically to make this offense viable. I mentioned all
- 26:22Speaker 2: the play action, the lack of motion, the lack of
- 26:25Speaker 2: like bunches and picks and things like if you're getting
- 26:28Speaker 2: a ton of man coverage, like where are the pick plays?
- 26:31Speaker 2: Like where are the incuts right? Like where are the crossers?
- 26:33Speaker 2: Like those are that those are man coverage beaterers? Like
- 26:36Speaker 2: how many years you know the Patriots have always been
- 26:38Speaker 2: a pretty heavy man coverage defense in the Belichick era,
- 26:42Speaker 2: how often did we see teams counter that with like
- 26:45Speaker 2: picks and slants and crossers over the middle of the field.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Because that's if you have man to man and you
- 26:50Speaker 2: run crossing routes over the middle of the field, that
- 26:53Speaker 2: intersect and those men run into each other. Now you're
- 26:56Speaker 2: gonna have open receivers all over the field. The twenty
- 26:59Speaker 2: eighteen AFC Championship game, I'll never forget it. The second half.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Remember how Andy Reid has started calling pick plays left
- 27:05Speaker 2: and right, and the Patriots were pissed about it. They
- 27:08Speaker 2: thought they were illegal. Right, Remember that they were too
- 27:10Speaker 2: far down the field. But that was how the Chiefs
- 27:13Speaker 2: got their offense going in that game, was that Reid
- 27:15Speaker 2: started to call pick plays at the line of scrimmage
- 27:18Speaker 2: to get those guys off man coverage. If you're seeing
- 27:21Speaker 2: a ton of man coverage like that, that those are
- 27:23Speaker 2: your answers. They need more of those schematic answers now,
- 27:27Speaker 2: they need more layers in more conflict in their concepts
- 27:30Speaker 2: from the route running standpoint. If they start doing that
- 27:33Speaker 2: kind of stuff, I am willing to give Alex van
- 27:36Speaker 2: Pella to clean slate here like you had. You know,
- 27:40Speaker 2: as much as we could say the same for Jacoby,
- 27:42Speaker 2: you had a pretty tough hand dealt to you in
- 27:45Speaker 2: the first five weeks of the season. You did not
- 27:48Speaker 2: have great personnel on the field. That's just a fact.
- 27:51Speaker 2: So I'm willing to wipe the slate clean with him,
- 27:54Speaker 2: start fresh this week. But you know, we're talking a
- 27:57Speaker 2: lot about pistol and route concepts and things like that.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I'm not advocating to turn Drake May into Mr Jackson, Okay,
- 28:04Speaker 2: But in certain situations am I advocating for them to
- 28:09Speaker 2: run some zone read, some quarterback options, some design quarterback run. Absolutely,
- 28:15Speaker 2: Like we saw it in the preseason against Philadelphia that
- 28:18Speaker 2: he walked one in off the goal line on his
- 28:20Speaker 2: zone read play, where you know he can do that.
- 28:23Speaker 2: He can take the edge if there's nobody there to
- 28:25Speaker 2: set it on the defensive side of the ball. If
- 28:28Speaker 2: it's fourth quarter and you're third and one, fourth and
- 28:30Speaker 2: one for the game, I'm absolutely using his legs as
- 28:34Speaker 2: a factor and playing eleven on eleven. Don't take that
- 28:36Speaker 2: away from them, you know, Like, don't don't take that away.
- 28:39Speaker 2: So I'm not saying that they have to run him
- 28:41Speaker 2: ten fifteen times, Like, don't do that either. I know
- 28:44Speaker 2: all of us are a little bit nervous and a
- 28:46Speaker 2: little anxious about him getting injured, so like, don't.
- 28:49Speaker 1: He might be safe for running than in the pocket.
- 28:51Speaker 2: But he might be But if you're down by the
- 28:53Speaker 2: goal line and you're just trying to punch it in,
- 28:56Speaker 2: even if it's just to hold the backside, because he's
- 28:58Speaker 2: a threat with his legs. To keep it, you have
- 29:01Speaker 2: to do certain things like that. You know, they have
- 29:04Speaker 2: run some RPO stuff with him when he gets to play.
- 29:07Speaker 2: You know, those are the types of things that I
- 29:09Speaker 2: want to continue to see with this offense moving forward.
- 29:12Speaker 2: And the last thing I wanted to do before We'll
- 29:15Speaker 2: do three up, three down a little bit earlier today
- 29:17Speaker 2: because like it's weird. We're not going to do like
- 29:18Speaker 2: a whole dissection of the game, I feel like, because well,
- 29:22Speaker 2: the quarterback just changed, right. But the last thing I
- 29:25Speaker 2: wanted to talk about with this whole thing is the
- 29:27Speaker 2: Jacoby Brissette of it all. All the things I just
- 29:32Speaker 2: said about Van Pelt are fair things to say about Jacobe.
- 29:37Speaker 2: He did not have the best hand, He did not
- 29:39Speaker 2: have great offensive line play. Frankly, he had poor offensive
- 29:43Speaker 2: line play. He doesn't have all star receivers out there yet,
- 29:47Speaker 2: Like maybe Jalen Polk and Pop Douglass turn into that,
- 29:50Speaker 2: but they're not there yet. You know, I think that
- 29:52Speaker 2: was a big difference that I overlooked a little bit
- 29:55Speaker 2: with his Cleveland tape a couple of years ago. You know,
- 29:57Speaker 2: he's got a Marii Cooper and he's got David Joku,
- 30:00Speaker 2: Like those are two Pro Bowl caliber receivers that he has.
- 30:04Speaker 2: He doesn't have that here. Maybe Hunter Henry is like
- 30:06Speaker 2: close to ing Djoku, but they do not have an
- 30:09Speaker 2: Amari Cooper from two years ago, especially, so he wasn't
- 30:13Speaker 2: dealt the fairest of hands either. With that being said,
- 30:16Speaker 2: I do feel as though this benching, based off of
- 30:19Speaker 2: the tape, and I think everybody can see it based
- 30:21Speaker 2: off of the production, was pretty was justifiable. Like I
- 30:24Speaker 2: do think you can sit there and say, especially on Sunday,
- 30:28Speaker 2: the last couple Sundays, that it just hasn't been good
- 30:31Speaker 2: enough from the quarterback position.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought he was getting too much flak at
- 30:35Speaker 1: the start of the season, but he got sped up
- 30:37Speaker 1: and that's not necessarily his fault. But the last couple
- 30:39Speaker 1: of weeks, like it just he was seeing ghosts out there.
- 30:43Speaker 1: He's a little shell shocked. Now hopefully that same thing
- 30:45Speaker 1: doesn't happen to Drake May. We'll have to see, But
- 30:49Speaker 1: you know, it was a professional through it all. Still is.
- 30:52Speaker 1: You know, was talking about today in the locker room,
- 30:54Speaker 1: and you know, he said, Drake May asked him how
- 30:55Speaker 1: he's doing. He said, if you're worried about me focused
- 30:58Speaker 1: on the wrong thing, you know, it's nothing best for
- 31:00Speaker 1: the kid. He's clearly frustrated, but he's not gonna take
- 31:04Speaker 1: it out on Drake May. He's not gonna blame Drake May,
- 31:07Speaker 1: nor should he. And and yeah, I mean he gets
- 31:12Speaker 1: you know, I've always been a fan of his. I
- 31:14Speaker 1: still am. I thought he handled himself well, but it
- 31:17Speaker 1: was time.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Yeah. So a couple of plays I wanted to point
- 31:21Speaker 2: to specifically where this is just my opinion, but it
- 31:25Speaker 2: felt like these were maybe some of the sticking points
- 31:28Speaker 2: for Girodmeo and his coaching staff with making this change.
- 31:31Speaker 2: From a Brisette perspective, So, when you're dealing with an
- 31:36Speaker 2: offense that really doesn't create a ton of opportunities in
- 31:39Speaker 2: a game, the ones that you miss get exacerbated, right,
- 31:43Speaker 2: those are really big, key plays in the game. So
- 31:47Speaker 2: the couple of the big ones, to me, he missed
- 31:49Speaker 2: the Jalen Polk three times on third down. He had
- 31:53Speaker 2: him three times on third down, missed them all three times.
- 31:56Speaker 2: He had the corner out early on in the game.
- 31:59Speaker 2: There's pressure on him, he gets hit his he throw
- 32:01Speaker 2: is throwing, but the ball is not good enough, you know,
- 32:04Speaker 2: not a catchable throw. He missed him on an out
- 32:08Speaker 2: later on in the game in the second half, holding
- 32:10Speaker 2: the football. Didn't see it quick enough, didn't throw it
- 32:13Speaker 2: fast enough, missed him there. Avp mentioned today in his
- 32:16Speaker 2: press conference a third down play right before the half
- 32:20Speaker 2: where they had an open receiver and they didn't find him.
- 32:22Speaker 2: That was Polk again. That was open on the left sideline.
- 32:26Speaker 2: He opened a Bursett opened to the right side, didn't
- 32:29Speaker 2: see him on the left hand side open the deep
- 32:32Speaker 2: shot to Pop Douglas off play action. They finally dial
- 32:36Speaker 2: up a shot off play action where they get what
- 32:38Speaker 2: they want, Like they get the coverage, they get the
- 32:41Speaker 2: route against the coverage, they get it blocked. Like everything
- 32:44Speaker 2: is designed and executed perfectly. Quarterback misses the throw. That
- 32:49Speaker 2: was a big one to me. And then there's a
- 32:53Speaker 2: couple of plays to Remandre And I know, I'm like
- 32:56Speaker 2: kind of picking on Bersette a little bit, but there
- 32:57Speaker 2: was a couple of plays on Remandre to Remandre where
- 33:00Speaker 2: he threw the ball in the flat where it didn't
- 33:02Speaker 2: really make sense that the ball is going there. There
- 33:04Speaker 2: was one play in particular, and after it happened on
- 33:09Speaker 2: the sideline you can see it on the TV copy.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Gerrodmeo goes over to Alex van Pelt, puts his hand
- 33:15Speaker 2: over his mouth and says something to Alex van Pell.
- 33:19Speaker 2: There was a the throw was they motioned Hunter Henry
- 33:23Speaker 2: at the snap. They shifted him from one side of
- 33:25Speaker 2: the formation to the other side. He got followed by
- 33:28Speaker 2: a defender. When you get followed by the defender, that
- 33:30Speaker 2: usually signals it's man to man coverage, right, because the
- 33:33Speaker 2: guy's traveling with Hunter Henry. So Jacoby idd Manton man
- 33:37Speaker 2: coverage pre snap. So he thought, I'm gonna throw this
- 33:39Speaker 2: ball in the flat term Andre, He's gonna have one
- 33:41Speaker 2: guy to miss, and he's you know, make miss and
- 33:43Speaker 2: he's gonna get the first down fair because Roman has
- 33:46Speaker 2: been doing that all year. Just make one guy miss,
- 33:48Speaker 2: pick up five you know, five or six yards, pick
- 33:50Speaker 2: up the Churst down correct. When the ball is snapped
- 33:55Speaker 2: the defense and kudos to Miami, they got one on
- 33:58Speaker 2: the on perset. Here the defense falls into his zone,
- 34:01Speaker 2: so they disguised that they were in zone, they drop
- 34:04Speaker 2: in his zone coverage. He throws the ball to Remandre
- 34:07Speaker 2: Anyway in the flat and like three guys are on Remondre,
- 34:11Speaker 2: you know, within a split second, and it's a negative
- 34:14Speaker 2: one yard game and there first to punt. If he
- 34:16Speaker 2: had just read out the progression post snap, ideed that
- 34:21Speaker 2: it wasn't man to man like he thought, like when
- 34:24Speaker 2: you have to confirm, you can't just go off your
- 34:26Speaker 2: pre snap, you know instincts. You have to then confirm
- 34:30Speaker 2: post snap that this is man to man or zone.
- 34:33Speaker 2: So if he had confirmed post snap that it was
- 34:35Speaker 2: zone coverage and not man, then he has Hunter Henry,
- 34:38Speaker 2: whose man traveled with him and then dropped in the zone.
- 34:42Speaker 2: He's got Hunter Henry. Nobody covers Hunter Henry in the
- 34:45Speaker 2: left flat. He's all by his lonesome for a first
- 34:48Speaker 2: down and probably a big play. So those types of
- 34:51Speaker 2: plays we talked about this after the Jets game. Those
- 34:55Speaker 2: types of plays just felt like they were happening a
- 34:57Speaker 2: little too often with Brissette, where you had this veteran
- 35:01Speaker 2: quarterback that was supposed to be winning mentally, that was
- 35:04Speaker 2: supposed to be managing games, that was supposed to be
- 35:06Speaker 2: hitting the layups and like giving you the easy conversions
- 35:09Speaker 2: within the offense, and he just wasn't doing enough of that.
- 35:13Speaker 2: I don't think it was that he didn't, you know,
- 35:17Speaker 2: throw a perfect ball to Jalen Polk in the back
- 35:19Speaker 2: of the end zone, or he didn't leave a lead
- 35:21Speaker 2: a game winning drive with thirty seconds to go in
- 35:23Speaker 2: the game at the end of the fourth quarter. To me,
- 35:26Speaker 2: it was are we even hitting the layups right in
- 35:29Speaker 2: this offense? And the answer too often a little bit
- 35:32Speaker 2: was no. And that's I do think that had a
- 35:35Speaker 2: hand in where we are right now. Yeah, all right,
- 35:39Speaker 2: three up, three down. We'll take some phone calls as well,
- 35:42Speaker 2: and I will talk all. We got plenty of emails
- 35:44Speaker 2: and everything about Drake May and everything going on, as
- 35:47Speaker 2: you can expect. So I'll start with you, Alex. Three up,
- 35:50Speaker 2: three down. Who is your first up from the game
- 35:52Speaker 2: on Sunday?
- 35:52Speaker 1: My first up? That's my shopping list. Third is my
- 35:55Speaker 1: first rank it did you tear it? I do it
- 35:59Speaker 1: in the order of the like I know when I'm
- 36:01Speaker 1: going through the grocery store, like, okay, well, first off,
- 36:03Speaker 1: I go to vegetables. I know some people are probably
- 36:06Speaker 1: surprised that I go to vegetables. I'm a salad guy.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Like salads. Then it's like.
- 36:11Speaker 2: One of those salad guys though, where it's like just
- 36:13Speaker 2: lettuce in dressing or do you do you do? You
- 36:15Speaker 2: do some extras.
- 36:17Speaker 1: If I'm like, all right, I just need to eat quick,
- 36:19Speaker 1: like I'll do that. But like last night for instance,
- 36:21Speaker 1: you know, lettuce, cucumber, carrot, onion, grilled some chicken up
- 36:25Speaker 1: through the chicken in there. Make my make my own
- 36:28Speaker 1: dressing because it's healthier.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Look at you, so I'm impressed.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm a big salad guy.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Your little emerald in the kitchen.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I would put that salad on the uplist. That was
- 36:36Speaker 1: actually good. It was like ten thirty. I was writing
- 36:39Speaker 1: all night and I'm like, I just got to make
- 36:40Speaker 1: this and it came up better than I thought anyway.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Number one up shocker for me. Christianzalez. Yeah again on
- 36:46Speaker 1: Tyreek Hill just really should add two picks. If there's
- 36:50Speaker 1: one knock on Christian Zalez, just make sure you catch
- 36:53Speaker 1: the ball. And it's a veteran play by by Tyreek
- 36:55Speaker 1: Hill when his eyes got a little too wide. But
- 36:57Speaker 1: I'm done doing. Is he going to be a stud?
- 37:00Speaker 1: I'm done doing? Is he going to justify the pick
- 37:02Speaker 1: like he's kind of here. Yeah, are we still debating this?
- 37:04Speaker 1: Are we still wondering this? I know we had a
- 37:06Speaker 1: rough camp, but at this point I'm ready to call
- 37:08Speaker 1: it what we said it might be at the times,
- 37:09Speaker 1: just a gamer. He shows up and he performs, and
- 37:13Speaker 1: he just continues to be He's been their best player
- 37:15Speaker 1: right through five weeks.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Am I wrong in saying that percent correct? I mean
- 37:19Speaker 2: it might have been key on White early, but he's
- 37:21Speaker 2: obviously had some issues as of late. I also had
- 37:24Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez. So here are the stats. Twenty one routes
- 37:26Speaker 2: across from Tyreek Hill, three catches, fifty five yards with
- 37:31Speaker 2: a pass breakup almost dint. Yeah, the interception was on
- 37:34Speaker 2: Odell Beckham. He was covering Beckham on that play. Just
- 37:37Speaker 2: an unreal interception. Like I understand that. You know, he
- 37:41Speaker 2: is telegraphed a little bit by Huntley. He kind of
- 37:43Speaker 2: stares it down, But that is not an easy play
- 37:46Speaker 2: to make, Like it's a free access slant. Right most
- 37:49Speaker 2: of the time the quarterback thinks that that's just an
- 37:50Speaker 2: easy completion. He jumps it and you can see the
- 37:54Speaker 2: explosiveness in the clothes that he had to jump to
- 37:57Speaker 2: football extremely impressive, all of his man to man reps
- 38:01Speaker 2: against Tyreek Kill just in his hip pocket the entire way.
- 38:04Speaker 2: He had one play that was absolutely absurd. You know,
- 38:09Speaker 2: Tyrek Hill, they like to bring him in motion, so
- 38:11Speaker 2: they bring him in motion at the snap, and they
- 38:13Speaker 2: roll him into the route, that cheap motion that they use,
- 38:16Speaker 2: and Gonzo's on him in man coverage and he comes
- 38:19Speaker 2: with him stride for stride, and Tyreek Hill runs a
- 38:22Speaker 2: vertical out of the motion and Gonzo just with him
- 38:26Speaker 2: the whole whole way, like stride for stride, even with
- 38:30Speaker 2: Tyreek Kill getting the head start into the route. That's
- 38:33Speaker 2: the fastest receiver in the NFL. This guy, the way
- 38:36Speaker 2: he glides to top speed, it doesn't even look like
- 38:39Speaker 2: he's trying that hard to run fast, and he's running fast.
- 38:42Speaker 2: It's kind of like you remember Randy Moss, Like it
- 38:44Speaker 2: just didn't even look like his legs were moving that fast,
- 38:46Speaker 2: but he was just pulling away from the defense. He's
- 38:49Speaker 2: a glider. Christian Gonzales in a similar way. The only
- 38:53Speaker 2: thing that I would say about this game for Gonzales
- 38:58Speaker 2: is more a coaching thing, like why not more man
- 39:01Speaker 2: to man like, if you're the Patriots coaching staff on
- 39:03Speaker 2: the defensive side with DeMarcus Covington, you've got to be
- 39:06Speaker 2: thinking to yourself, like we have Stefan Gilmour, Like we
- 39:10Speaker 2: have ty Law Durell Reeves, Like we have the one
- 39:14Speaker 2: of those types of guys, you know, Patrick Sartan and Denver.
- 39:16Speaker 2: You know, we have one of those types of guys.
- 39:18Speaker 2: So there's no reason to play soft zone coverage. Like,
- 39:22Speaker 2: there's no reason to do that.
- 39:23Speaker 1: So I've been wondering this. We can get into this
- 39:25Speaker 1: more when we get to the Texans. But yeah, you know,
- 39:26Speaker 1: you lose your defensive signal call, You're down a lot
- 39:29Speaker 1: of players, frankly in the secondary, and you're facing a
- 39:32Speaker 1: couple of teams in San Francisco in Miami that have
- 39:36Speaker 1: a ton of weapons across the board, And I understand
- 39:38Speaker 1: in those cases, maybe wanting to just be like, all right,
- 39:41Speaker 1: they're gonna use a ton of motion, change things pre established,
- 39:43Speaker 1: just keep everything in front of us.
- 39:46Speaker 2: This week against Houston, they shouldn't match up.
- 39:49Speaker 1: They the matchups are there, like they should go back
- 39:51Speaker 1: to play because they Gonzalez was shadowing guys at the
- 39:54Speaker 1: start of the season and then as they've lost players
- 39:56Speaker 1: on defense. That's changed. You got to get back to
- 39:59Speaker 1: it this week. It is a big week to get
- 40:00Speaker 1: back to it.
- 40:01Speaker 2: So he technically shadowed Hill in this game, and a
- 40:04Speaker 2: lot of their zone coverages convert to man to man
- 40:07Speaker 2: on verticals, so he's carrying a vertical deep even if
- 40:10Speaker 2: it's technically zone. But I would just say the biggest
- 40:13Speaker 2: thing you know with it is like the pass rush,
- 40:16Speaker 2: because when you play zone coverage, you're gonna usually only
- 40:20Speaker 2: rush four guys. Right now, they're thirtieth in the league
- 40:23Speaker 2: in pressure rate with a four man rush. They're not
- 40:25Speaker 2: getting home with.
- 40:25Speaker 1: A four Well, that was another thing I wondered, are
- 40:27Speaker 1: they trying to buy themselves some time by playing zone
- 40:29Speaker 1: because the pass rush isn't there.
- 40:31Speaker 2: So I would think it would be the opposite, right
- 40:33Speaker 2: where if you play man to man, not only can
- 40:35Speaker 2: you put another guy in the rush, right, you can
- 40:38Speaker 2: get into five six span rush. Not only that, but
- 40:41Speaker 2: now you go and you disrupt those guys on the outside.
- 40:44Speaker 2: You throw off the timing, right, you play press, you
- 40:46Speaker 2: press those guys, You ride those guys down the field.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Now the timing's off. The quarterback has to hold the ball.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess that tracks I was thinking more like
- 40:54Speaker 1: if they I was kind of under the assumption maybe
- 40:56Speaker 1: they don't want to blitz. Yeah, and in that case,
- 40:58Speaker 1: you just it's a little easier for the coverage hold
- 41:00Speaker 1: up in zone for a longer period of time. It's
- 41:01Speaker 1: not gonna be as tight coverage. But yeah, you know,
- 41:04Speaker 1: you know, you're not forcing quarterback to get the ball
- 41:06Speaker 1: out of his hands.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I just look at it with the way that
- 41:10Speaker 2: they've struggled in the pass rush, the way they've struggled
- 41:12Speaker 2: to rush and contain quarterbacks in the pocket. It's been
- 41:16Speaker 2: one or the other. It's either been poor discipline with
- 41:20Speaker 2: the pass rush in a four man rush, or it's
- 41:22Speaker 2: been no rush because they're just trying to keep the
- 41:24Speaker 2: quarterback in the pocket. So to find a nice way
- 41:27Speaker 2: to get pressure on the quarterback. You know, I'm almost
- 41:31Speaker 2: ready to go back to like twenty eighteen nineteen, Like
- 41:34Speaker 2: bring out the cover zeros, bring out the blitzes, like
- 41:38Speaker 2: five man pressure package, like with single high safety, and
- 41:41Speaker 2: go get the quarterback because the zone stuff is not
- 41:45Speaker 2: working right now. They're averaging they're allowing almost ten yards
- 41:49Speaker 2: per pass attempt in zone coverage. Nine point nine yards
- 41:52Speaker 2: per past attempt when they put.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Most more yards in ash and Gent's running per carry
- 41:55Speaker 1: a poison state.
- 41:56Speaker 2: There you go. So they are are tied for dead
- 41:59Speaker 2: last in the league and yards per attempt against in
- 42:01Speaker 2: zone coverage. So play a little bit more man to
- 42:04Speaker 2: man maybe and that would help out a lot. And
- 42:06Speaker 2: you have the horse like you have the dude like
- 42:08Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez can take Stefan Diggs, he can take a
- 42:12Speaker 2: Tyreek Hill, he can take you know, as a Christian
- 42:15Speaker 2: Kirk or whatever Jacksonville's thrown at you. So they have
- 42:18Speaker 2: the guy that can go ahead and take those top
- 42:21Speaker 2: matchups and take those heavyweight battles. So I would have
- 42:24Speaker 2: leaned all the way into that who's your second up?
- 42:26Speaker 1: Marte Mapu, Yeah, just because there's so much put in
- 42:29Speaker 1: that plate on his plate in that game and second
- 42:32Speaker 1: season in the NFL, barely played as a rookie, missed
- 42:35Speaker 1: time coming in, really wasn't a part of anything in
- 42:38Speaker 1: training camp, and to have the green dot and play
- 42:42Speaker 1: as much as he did and communicate, and the Patriots
- 42:45Speaker 1: had their defensive issues in this game, certainly, I don't
- 42:47Speaker 1: want to minimize that, but it never felt like any
- 42:50Speaker 1: of them were due to like miscommunications, you guys being
- 42:52Speaker 1: out of position, right, you didn't have like you had
- 42:54Speaker 1: against Seattle or DK Metraff just down the sideline. So
- 42:59Speaker 1: I felt well, like you know, against San Francisco, the
- 43:02Speaker 1: communication there seemed to be issues right without Jawan Bentley
- 43:05Speaker 1: And in this game, I thought mop who did a
- 43:08Speaker 1: really good job that he just played well too. I
- 43:10Speaker 1: look at was it in the first quarter and it
- 43:12Speaker 1: was in the first half where Jalen Wattle runs that slant.
- 43:15Speaker 1: It wasn't a great throw, but there's Marte Mophu waiting
- 43:18Speaker 1: in the middle form and he puts a lick on him. Yeah,
- 43:20Speaker 1: and it's that's not a guy that's rusty. That's not
- 43:22Speaker 1: a guy that's tentative about missing time. That's a guy
- 43:24Speaker 1: that's ready to play. I thought they got a really
- 43:27Speaker 1: good performance out of mark Te Mophu in this game.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I had him on my list as well. Played
- 43:31Speaker 2: every single defensive snap with the green dot, so that
- 43:35Speaker 2: that is really hard to do. He was able to
- 43:38Speaker 2: do it. There are a couple of plays where he
- 43:40Speaker 2: was kind of felt like it was he was everywhere.
- 43:42Speaker 5: You know.
- 43:42Speaker 2: He had one play in the red zone where he
- 43:45Speaker 2: covered three different routes as a as a single high safety,
- 43:48Speaker 2: three different routes. That that's really impressive. It's hard to do,
- 43:52Speaker 2: and that really stood out to me. I also would
- 43:55Speaker 2: add that the trickle down effect that it had on
- 43:58Speaker 2: some of the rest of the defense I thought was
- 44:00Speaker 2: really beneficial in this game because you we talked a
- 44:03Speaker 2: lot last week about having to play Tavia off the
- 44:06Speaker 2: ball so much. With Marte Mapu back playing a little
- 44:09Speaker 2: bit at the second level, Tavai played a season high
- 44:12Speaker 2: thirty eight snaps on the line of scrimmage. This week,
- 44:14Speaker 2: he was back to playing on the edge a ton more.
- 44:17Speaker 2: So now you have Mapu playing at the second level
- 44:21Speaker 2: next to like a ray Kwa McMillan, which we'll get to,
- 44:24Speaker 2: and then you have to Vay back on the line
- 44:25Speaker 2: of scrimmage because Tavia's back on the line of scrimmage
- 44:29Speaker 2: on early downs. Now Joshua doesn't have to play the
- 44:31Speaker 2: run early downs anymore, so he goes back to a
- 44:34Speaker 2: situational role. So it just had this giant domino effect
- 44:38Speaker 2: on the whole front. Seven. It wasn't perfect. There was
- 44:42Speaker 2: a couple of play action plays that whiz by his
- 44:44Speaker 2: ear that he's going to have to figure fix moving forward,
- 44:47Speaker 2: you know, reads off of play action from the second level.
- 44:50Speaker 2: But if he's Marte Mapu linebacker, hell yeah. Finally, if
- 44:55Speaker 2: he's Marte Mopu linebacker, then they can figure out way
- 45:00Speaker 2: to use some of the other guys to the best
- 45:02Speaker 2: of their abilities. So it wasn't just that he played
- 45:05Speaker 2: well and he wore the green die and the communication
- 45:07Speaker 2: was good and his role was taken care of. There
- 45:10Speaker 2: was also a nice little trickle down effect that it
- 45:12Speaker 2: had on the rest of the defense. And I'd give
- 45:14Speaker 2: my you know, I kind of said this stuff about
- 45:17Speaker 2: man coverage and zone coverage, like kudos to DeMarcus coverage,
- 45:20Speaker 2: and in the staff, I thought that was one of
- 45:21Speaker 2: the first times where I was like, good coaching move
- 45:24Speaker 2: like that, that's the right thing to do. You know,
- 45:26Speaker 2: he's at the second level the defense most of the
- 45:28Speaker 2: time to vise back on the end of the line,
- 45:31Speaker 2: like this is all the pieces that are starting to
- 45:33Speaker 2: fit together a little bit better in that front seven.
- 45:35Speaker 2: So I was excited about that. Yeah, and you know,
- 45:37Speaker 2: I was excited about Maphu playing of course. Yeah, that
- 45:40Speaker 2: was one of my favorite parts of this game.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Yeap, third up Pop Douglas. Yeah, and this was clearly
- 45:47Speaker 1: his best game the year. I know he put up
- 45:48Speaker 1: numbers in that Jets game, but we I know I
- 45:51Speaker 1: talked about another shows I don't remember we did on
- 45:53Speaker 1: this show that felt that was like an empty calories
- 45:56Speaker 1: kind of game. Yeah, because, yes, he put up the numbers,
- 45:59Speaker 1: but a lot of it it was in the second
- 46:00Speaker 1: half when when the game was sort of out of reach,
- 46:03Speaker 1: and it just it felt like they were forcing him
- 46:05Speaker 1: the ball. It didn't feel like he was producing in
- 46:07Speaker 1: the context of the offense. It felt like he was
- 46:09Speaker 1: just like, all right, throw the ball to Pop because
- 46:10Speaker 1: we need to throw the ball to Pop.
- 46:12Speaker 5: Right.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Yeah, this game he was productive, he was involved, but
- 46:15Speaker 1: he's doing it in big spots. He's moving the chains.
- 46:19Speaker 1: It's felt more natural, right, So we'll have to see
- 46:22Speaker 1: if he can continue that with Drake may now. But
- 46:25Speaker 1: I just that was sort of the role the performance
- 46:29Speaker 1: you hope to see from Pop Douglas in the summer.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Even coming out of that Jets game, with the numbers
- 46:34Speaker 1: he put up, it was like, eh, like I all right,
- 46:36Speaker 1: so we caught whatever it was nine passes, but it
- 46:40Speaker 1: never felt like he made a difference. None of those
- 46:42Speaker 1: felt like impact plays. He was making impact plays in
- 46:44Speaker 1: this game.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he was the reason why they got into scoring
- 46:47Speaker 2: range on the game winning drive. That wasn't you know?
- 46:50Speaker 2: He got him down the field. It was a big
- 46:52Speaker 2: part of that. I love the fact that a lot
- 46:54Speaker 2: of it came out of the slot, Like finally, some
- 46:56Speaker 2: like quick hitters over the middle out of the slot
- 46:59Speaker 2: from this offense. Was great to see Miami open the
- 47:02Speaker 2: middle of the field a little bit too often. I
- 47:04Speaker 2: don't know why. I don't know why you would ever
- 47:06Speaker 2: open the middle of the field against the Patriots, but
- 47:08Speaker 2: they surely did. They played some split safety and you know,
- 47:11Speaker 2: he was in there in the middle, you know, finding
- 47:13Speaker 2: ways to make that happen. And a couple of those
- 47:16Speaker 2: like hammer routes or whatever you want to call him,
- 47:18Speaker 2: where you know, the underneath player kind of sits and
- 47:20Speaker 2: holds the zone and then he just curls under you know,
- 47:23Speaker 2: behind it on that post. Hit that twice, two or
- 47:25Speaker 2: three times, I want to say twice. It was one
- 47:27Speaker 2: of them they almost hit. If he had caught the
- 47:30Speaker 2: one that he dove for. If he catches that in stride,
- 47:32Speaker 2: he's he's walking in for a touchdown. So that play
- 47:35Speaker 2: was working for them. He was working for them. I
- 47:38Speaker 2: like that one. That's a good one. My last one though,
- 47:41Speaker 2: is Ermandre Stevenson. Yeah, he was good third three yard touchdown,
- 47:46Speaker 2: third down conversion early on in this game, but even
- 47:49Speaker 2: bigger than that. I just liked how he bounced back.
- 47:52Speaker 2: I like how he took some adversity on the chin.
- 47:54Speaker 2: I know that it was a soft emotion, benching, whatever
- 47:59Speaker 2: you want to call it, but this team needs guys
- 48:02Speaker 2: to respond the way Ramondre Stevenson responded. I thought he
- 48:05Speaker 2: said all the right things during the week. I thought
- 48:07Speaker 2: he had the right attitude. He has the big play
- 48:09Speaker 2: on the touchdown, like that is what we were all
- 48:12Speaker 2: looking for. He doesn't fumble in the game. First game
- 48:14Speaker 2: without a fumble. I know that's not necessarily a high bar,
- 48:17Speaker 2: but it's important. It's important to see somebody bounce back
- 48:21Speaker 2: from some adversity on this team, because I definitely think
- 48:24Speaker 2: that that's been missing. You don't want the losing to
- 48:27Speaker 2: become as a felgorrism. You don't want the losing to
- 48:29Speaker 2: become habitual. It seemed to me like Demandra Stevenson was
- 48:32Speaker 2: part of the solution on Sunday and not the problem,
- 48:35Speaker 2: and that's what they need from a guy that they
- 48:37Speaker 2: just paid. So I like the bounce back from Vermandre.
- 48:39Speaker 2: I thought he handled it well. Now, of course he's hurt,
- 48:42Speaker 2: so we'll see what happens. You know, it seems like
- 48:44Speaker 2: that's happening a lot with this team. All right, let's
- 48:47Speaker 2: move over to the downs.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Nick Leverett. Yeah, and look there were no bad snaps,
- 48:52Speaker 1: but ten pressures and yeah, interior pressure is just gonna
- 48:56Speaker 1: wreck your game, wreck your game, especially with the young quarterback.
- 49:01Speaker 1: It was. And look, they clearly don't feel great about
- 49:04Speaker 1: it because they've signed two centers this week, went to
- 49:06Speaker 1: the active roster, one of the practice squad. You knew
- 49:10Speaker 1: there's gonna We talked about this last week, had his
- 49:13Speaker 1: David Andrews. Was David Andrews playing well before he got hurt. Yeah,
- 49:16Speaker 1: not necessarily up to his standard, But I kind of said,
- 49:19Speaker 1: it's almost not worth discussing because the drop off is
- 49:22Speaker 1: so significant. There's nobody who's gonna come in and come
- 49:26Speaker 1: close to what he's giving you. And I think he
- 49:28Speaker 1: kind of saw that.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it, Lever had a tough game, some of it,
- 49:31Speaker 2: you know, the ten pressures. I think you could have
- 49:34Speaker 2: argued that some of it was on the guards as well,
- 49:37Speaker 2: not helping him out as much as they could have.
- 49:39Speaker 2: You know, there's a lot of early on especially it
- 49:42Speaker 2: was a lot of stunt pressure right, like twists on
- 49:44Speaker 2: the inside that they weren't passing off quite quick enough.
- 49:47Speaker 2: There were times where the tackle and the nose tackle
- 49:51Speaker 2: was like shaded into the a gap and so it's
- 49:53Speaker 2: on his outside shoulder, and like normally you would like
- 49:56Speaker 2: to see because he's got to snap the ball and
- 49:58Speaker 2: then he's got to get into position to block it.
- 50:00Speaker 2: So normally you would like to see the guard kind
- 50:03Speaker 2: of give some help there to the inside, like at
- 50:06Speaker 2: least give like the shade like a bump or you know,
- 50:09Speaker 2: a forearm or something to try to slow him down
- 50:12Speaker 2: so that Leverett can get out of his stance and
- 50:14Speaker 2: snap the ball. So I don't think it was all
- 50:16Speaker 2: on him that he that they allowed ten quarterback pressures
- 50:19Speaker 2: up the middle. But at the same time, you know,
- 50:21Speaker 2: he is the center, right, so if they're coming off
- 50:24Speaker 2: his outsider inside hip, you know, he is the guy
- 50:27Speaker 2: in the middle that's allowing that to happen. So he
- 50:31Speaker 2: was on my list as well. I just thought that
- 50:34Speaker 2: in general, and I kind of put on Whenue in
- 50:36Speaker 2: this boat a little bit too. In general, it just
- 50:40Speaker 2: wasn't really great on the inside. Ironically, with all the
- 50:44Speaker 2: questions about the tackles, I thought the tackles played pretty
- 50:46Speaker 2: well in this game. But Darien Lowe especially, I thought
- 50:49Speaker 2: this was one of his best games as a Patriot
- 50:51Speaker 2: that I've ever seen him play. He was really solid
- 50:53Speaker 2: in this game. There's too much pressure on the interior.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Even if you watch the play the Pulk play at
- 51:00Speaker 2: the end of the game, there's interior pressure in Jacobe
- 51:03Speaker 2: Ressett's lap. It's part of the reason why the ball
- 51:05Speaker 2: was a little bit high to Jalen Polk. So that
- 51:09Speaker 2: needs to be cleaned up. And Mike On went, who
- 51:11Speaker 2: I challenge him a little bit, like, that's your eighteen
- 51:13Speaker 2: million dollars a year player, right, that's your big money guard,
- 51:17Speaker 2: your big money offensive lineman. He's got to step up
- 51:19Speaker 2: and he's got to play a little bit better in
- 51:21Speaker 2: that situation in late game crunch time, like that's when
- 51:24Speaker 2: you need your your horses to really step up and
- 51:28Speaker 2: play good football. And it just wasn't quite good enough
- 51:31Speaker 2: in certain spots. So we both had Leverett who is
- 51:34Speaker 2: your next one.
- 51:35Speaker 1: I feel bad because I feel like I'm picking him
- 51:37Speaker 1: every week, but it's just been a rough start to
- 51:39Speaker 1: the season. Season Joshua Uche, Yeah, didn't give you much
- 51:42Speaker 1: as a pass rusher, and then I'll talk more about
- 51:44Speaker 1: special teams than a little bit. But the twelfth guy
- 51:47Speaker 1: on the field, and it was a brutal, brutal and
- 51:50Speaker 1: Gonzalez bailed him out. But yeah, had the potentially be
- 51:52Speaker 1: a true game, you know game losing twelve men on
- 51:56Speaker 1: the field penalty. It just feels like every week he's
- 51:59Speaker 1: either something doing this is just a lack of discipline
- 52:02Speaker 1: or just lack of awareness.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Yep, that's a fair one. I'll go before we get
- 52:07Speaker 2: into the coaching because that's I think on both of
- 52:09Speaker 2: our lists. I'll go, ray Qwa McMillan. Yeah, just couldn't
- 52:12Speaker 2: get off blocks in the run game. There's really nothing
- 52:14Speaker 2: else to say besides that. Like, it's just it's such
- 52:18Speaker 2: a big drop off from him from Juwan Bentley to
- 52:21Speaker 2: what they're getting off the ball right now. At the
- 52:22Speaker 2: linebacker position, it's been an absolute struggle trying to get
- 52:27Speaker 2: off blocks and trying to condense space from the second
- 52:29Speaker 2: level of the defense. He was in the mix on
- 52:31Speaker 2: like five or six big runs by Miami, like targeting
- 52:34Speaker 2: him in the run game and running right at him
- 52:37Speaker 2: on that last drive, you know, sixteen yards you just
- 52:39Speaker 2: can't get off a block, goes right up the middle.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Raheem Mostert in that last drive for the Dolphins, one
- 52:45Speaker 2: of the big runs on that play. I don't know
- 52:48Speaker 2: what they do at the second level of the defense.
- 52:51Speaker 2: Mapu obviously is a part of it, and so we'll
- 52:54Speaker 2: dug er By, you know, he'll be a part of
- 52:56Speaker 2: it too. When he gets back. We should mention that
- 52:58Speaker 2: he was back at practice to so maybe that's a
- 53:00Speaker 2: positive sign. It's almost a little scary about what I'm
- 53:06Speaker 2: about to say, but like Sioni, Taki Taki is an
- 53:10Speaker 2: important player. Yeah, like if they if he This is
- 53:14Speaker 2: part of the problem with the team right now and
- 53:16Speaker 2: why it's kind of is where it is. You know,
- 53:19Speaker 2: Taki Taki's signed to play like the mac Wilson third
- 53:23Speaker 2: down special teams role. And because you lose Bentley and
- 53:27Speaker 2: because you don't have great depth across the roster now
- 53:31Speaker 2: you're really counting on Taki Taki to be a three
- 53:33Speaker 2: down player, Like he has to come back and be
- 53:36Speaker 2: better than Raykwon McMillan is giving you right now. So
- 53:40Speaker 2: I've been disappointed at McMillan because to me, he should
- 53:45Speaker 2: just be a hammer in the middle of the defense.
- 53:46Speaker 2: I don't even need him to make the tackle, Like,
- 53:48Speaker 2: just go in there and just blow up the scheme, right, Like,
- 53:51Speaker 2: just be the one that kind of comes charging at
- 53:53Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage and blows it up. Dwan Bentley
- 53:55Speaker 2: used to do that all the time, where Like it
- 53:57Speaker 2: wasn't necessarily him who got the guy on the ground,
- 53:59Speaker 2: It was that blew up the blocking scheme that allowed
- 54:02Speaker 2: somebody else to come in and clean it up. They
- 54:04Speaker 2: need more from that second level spot, especially if it's
- 54:07Speaker 2: gonna be a ray Quon moving forward. So if it's
- 54:09Speaker 2: Taki Taki going into that spot. You know, Christian Ellis
- 54:13Speaker 2: had a rough game in this one too, so I
- 54:14Speaker 2: don't necessarily think he's the answer, but they need to
- 54:17Speaker 2: find some answers there at the second level of the defense.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Should we get on the coaching because.
- 54:21Speaker 1: I think my head coaching is my third one too.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Yeah, what did you look at specifically?
- 54:27Speaker 1: I mean, just overall, I thought the offensive game plan
- 54:32Speaker 1: didn't make a ton of sense. Yeah, especially once you
- 54:34Speaker 1: got into the game. Franchise record seven point nine yards
- 54:37Speaker 1: per carry. Yeah, and they I think they had the
- 54:40Speaker 1: seventh or eighth highest row rate in the league, right.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they were in it eighteen times.
- 54:45Speaker 1: This situation. You know, I'm gonna start situational football. Yeah,
- 54:47Speaker 1: at the end of the first half, you have that
- 54:50Speaker 1: that spot where it's all right, either just run the
- 54:53Speaker 1: half out and go to the locker room or push
- 54:55Speaker 1: the ball down the field. Again, they split the difference
- 54:57Speaker 1: in the worst way possible, gave the ball back Miami.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Now Miami tripped all over themselves and get back to
- 55:02Speaker 1: the Patriots, who somehow then punted it back to Miami.
- 55:05Speaker 1: And it was just a beautiful sequence of sicco football.
- 55:08Speaker 1: I mean, you talk about pants off in the press
- 55:11Speaker 1: box like that was disgusting. It was great.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Why is that a good thing? Because there's something do
- 55:17Speaker 2: you want to watch bad? That was bad foot?
- 55:20Speaker 1: I don't know. There's something about it where everybody starts
- 55:22Speaker 1: complaining about it, where it suddenly like I just enjoyed,
- 55:26Speaker 1: Like oh you know there there's there's a little bit
- 55:29Speaker 1: of a football fan snob and me, oh, I like this,
- 55:32Speaker 1: what's wrong? With you people. You don't like it. I
- 55:34Speaker 1: like it, but anyway, from an actual execution point of view,
- 55:39Speaker 1: not good. And and not only that, And Mayo pointed
- 55:43Speaker 1: this out and I recognized it the minute it happened.
- 55:47Speaker 1: That was the exact same thing they did against Seattle,
- 55:49Speaker 1: and it cost them the game against Seattle because Seattle
- 55:52Speaker 1: actually was competent and turned it into a field goal
- 55:55Speaker 1: in a game that goes to overtimes. Obviously massively significant.
- 56:00Speaker 1: That so Mayo talks about not being a mistake repeater,
- 56:03Speaker 1: Alex Van Pelt mistake repeater.
- 56:05Speaker 2: Yeah, or Mayo like, Look, and this is a I
- 56:08Speaker 2: wanted to say this off the top, and I've had
- 56:10Speaker 2: a lot to say about the may thing, and I
- 56:12Speaker 2: forgot one of the things that I actually really like
- 56:15Speaker 2: about this decision to go to may And this is again,
- 56:18Speaker 2: don't aggregate me. Okay, this is just my opinion. But
- 56:22Speaker 2: Mayo to me went in on Monday and said, we're
- 56:27Speaker 2: making the change. Yeah, you know, avp Elliott, whoever else
- 56:33Speaker 2: is it has to say in all this like I'm
- 56:35Speaker 2: the head coach of the team. This is what we're doing,
- 56:37Speaker 2: and he needs to do more of that. At the
- 56:41Speaker 2: end of the half. We've seen it on all you know,
- 56:45Speaker 2: they didn't have a ton of access, but we've gotten
- 56:47Speaker 2: some access to the sideline at times in the Bill era.
- 56:51Speaker 2: NFL Films has gotten access to the sideline and Bill era,
- 56:53Speaker 2: and it's documented, like it's on camera of Bill being like, hey, Josh,
- 56:59Speaker 2: let's run it here. Hey Josh, you know, let's make
- 57:02Speaker 2: sure we don't punt it back to them at the
- 57:04Speaker 2: end of the half here. You know, little things like that.
- 57:07Speaker 2: It's not hey Josh, let's run outside zone week. It's
- 57:11Speaker 2: not like you're not he's not calling to play. He
- 57:14Speaker 2: is just a little subtle, reminded game script.
- 57:16Speaker 1: It's the thing that the coaches you love can't do,
- 57:19Speaker 1: I refuse to do so, so there's that. You then
- 57:23Speaker 1: have it at the end of the half. Again, you're
- 57:28Speaker 1: running seven point nine yards per carry and I know
- 57:31Speaker 1: two minute drill traditional thought, throw the ball, but they
- 57:34Speaker 1: get down to the thirteen yard line with whatever it was,
- 57:37Speaker 1: one fifty four to go, like at the two minute warning,
- 57:40Speaker 1: so you need to go thirteen yards and two minutes
- 57:42Speaker 1: with all three timeouts available to you.
- 57:44Speaker 2: It's not happening.
- 57:45Speaker 1: The entire playbooks available, The entire playbook should be available
- 57:49Speaker 1: in that moment, and they throw four times, should one
- 57:52Speaker 1: of them been a touchdown? Like maybe the rule was
- 57:55Speaker 1: called correctly. And this is where I'll break some people.
- 57:57Speaker 1: I actually think it's good that rule exists. I understand
- 58:00Speaker 1: and why it exists. It's annoying, but it makes sense
- 58:02Speaker 1: when you look at it in the context of it
- 58:05Speaker 1: borrows language from actually the rule that determines whether or
- 58:07Speaker 1: not a player is out of bounds, And if that
- 58:09Speaker 1: rule didn't exist, you could technically have a situation where
- 58:13Speaker 1: a player makes a catch in bounds while simultaneously being
- 58:17Speaker 1: out of bounds. Yeah, and obviously you can't have that
- 58:20Speaker 1: right So but anyway, so you know, wait, so you
- 58:26Speaker 1: don't have a problem that they didn't try to running
- 58:27Speaker 1: the ball there at the end of the game. Yeah, uh,
- 58:32Speaker 1: take your just general anti run bias out.
- 58:35Speaker 2: I have a little bit of a problem with it.
- 58:38Speaker 2: But this is the this is the crux of our
- 58:43Speaker 2: debate with everything that is football, Like we The problem
- 58:48Speaker 2: that I have with the whole argument that they called
- 58:52Speaker 2: four pass plays in a row, yeah, all incomplete, is
- 58:55Speaker 2: that you're taking out some really important context, which is
- 59:01Speaker 2: that they were a heel away from the game winning
- 59:03Speaker 2: touchdown and okay, but they didn't score it. But as
- 59:06Speaker 2: an offensive guy and as a defender of play callers
- 59:09Speaker 2: and tight pants people, I have to say that that
- 59:14Speaker 2: to me is an execution based error and not a
- 59:16Speaker 2: play calling error like it. It's not Alex van Pelt's
- 59:19Speaker 2: fault that that Jalen Polk didn't get his second foot
- 59:23Speaker 2: in bounds. It is the player's responsibility to make that.
- 59:26Speaker 1: But I also just think you're at a point where
- 59:29Speaker 1: you're running the ball so well, you don't have to
- 59:31Speaker 1: go far, you still have your all three your timeouts.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Available, they could have mixed in a round.
- 59:36Speaker 1: Why not lean on the strength? And you know, I'm
- 59:39Speaker 1: not even saying you run it in from the from
- 59:41Speaker 1: the twelve. Maybe you run it down to the two
- 59:43Speaker 1: and then you can run some sort of screen or
- 59:45Speaker 1: a jet pass or something like that. Right, Throwing from
- 59:48Speaker 1: the thirteen is kind of tough because you don't you're
- 59:51Speaker 1: too far out to run your goal line pass package,
- 59:54Speaker 1: but you are sort of constricted on space when it
- 59:57Speaker 1: comes to your just general passing game. I'm a big
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: proponent of from like the sixteen to like the eleven,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: or even inside that the sixteen like the eight, run
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: the ball in there so you can get to your
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: goal line pass package.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Right, So, like most teams have the red zone broken
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: up into three sort of places, so it's you know
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: what one to six, like inside five, and then you
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: go to like seven to like fourteen fifteen depending on
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: the coach, sixteen, and then you have like high red
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: zone friend red zone.
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: So a lot of offensive philosophy that and I kind
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: of agree with it is that you want best It's
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: kind of like with third down two, Like best case
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: scenario is that you avoid the red zone altogether. Yeah,
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: and you throw it in from like the twenty two, right,
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: Like that's like the best case scenario because as your point,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: you just made the space. When it condenses, it's just
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: harder and harder.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Unless you have like a raw Gronkowski where it's like
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: we're just gonna flex him out and throw the ball
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: up to him. Like yeah, I'm a big proponent of
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: all right, let's just run this thing and get it
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: inside the five and then open it all back up.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: So like when they got to the twelve, to me,
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: the further you go in, the harder it is to
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: throw the ball from the twelve so I didn't hate
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: them throwing it from the twelve because they still have
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: a little bit of space to have a We're talking
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: about vertical elements of this field, right, so they still
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: have a little bit of a verticality to the field.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: And not only do they still have it, they they
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: ran They had the perfect play call on the perfect
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: route to beat the coverage ageither in Tampa Tuo and
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: they run the seam splitter to Jail and Polk and
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: it works beautifully like they had it. They had the
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: play called up, they had it drawn up perfectly. The
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: receiver just didn't get his foot and bounds. So yeah,
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: I guess they could have mixed in a run at
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: some point. But now you're in third and ten, you're
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: probably you know, I know it's a two down territory thing,
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: but you're starting to get into that situation. So could
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: they have ran it on first down?
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Maybe?
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Sure? Like first or second down? Yeah, maybe maybe they
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: saved the Polk play for third down, right, you know,
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: or something.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: And I would just even go back, well, yeah, cause
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: you run eight yards of carry second to ten on
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: it third and two, take a shot to the end
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: zone if not fourth until you can pick it up
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: and you're not even that like you can. Yes, it
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: does get tougher to throw when you get down there
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: because the vertical stuff. And my thing is like, can
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: we get to the two to three yard line force
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: them to bring in the jumbo package and then just
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: like bootleg and hit a tight end in the flat.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: That would be too easy, too easy. They don't do
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: things that are right.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: Well I'm saying like that, or even again, pop, where
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: is the pop pass?
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: The pop where I've been waiting for this all year?
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: You're not getting they do it orbit that's the best
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: you're gonna get it.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: And then another coaching thing that's a little more abstract.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: So you might hate this.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: But probably when the Dolphins score.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: This isn't so much a coaching decision as much as
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: something I think reflects on coaching. Yeah, when the Dolphins
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: scored would end up being the game. When he touched
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: down with four and a half minutes ago, alec Engold
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: runs it in from the three yard line. Yeah, that
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: was the dolphins seventy second offensive play the game.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: The Patriots to that point had run forty one plays. Yeah,
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: a thirty play discrepancy is nuts. Yeah, like you just
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: don't see that. And that's where I give the defense
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: a little bit of leeway because average team runs what
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: sixty plays, sixty five plays over the course of a game.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: So here you are with five minutes ago, you're already
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: over at It's not exceptional, but it's over average where
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: you're gonna ask a defense to do. And a lot
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: of that it's complimentary football, right, It's a big Bill
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Belichick thing, like the offense could not stay on the field,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: could not sustain drives. They did not have a drive
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: that lasted over five minutes. So the first three quarters
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: they only had two drives that lasted over four plays.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: You know, they had one, two, three, four, five, six,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: three and outs in the first three quarters of eight drives.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: That to me, and that there's a number of reasons
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: that come from that, but that reflects on coaching. To me,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: that is something where like the game plan wasn't good enough.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: You should not be getting out repped by thirty plays
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a lot of the same coaching point,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: you know, criticisms. I had the offensive philosophy, game play
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: and whatever you want to call it. I already talked
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: about all the route concepts and things like that that
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: I don't necessarily care for. I still don't really feel
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: as though this play calling, his play calling with Van
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Pelt is sequenced or is you know, married together. I
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: still feel like we're a little bit in the Madden
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: offense phase where we're just kind of pulling plays out
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: of a hat. But maybe that becomes a little bit
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: more sequence, with some more consistency, and with Drake May
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: under center, maybe they get some better quarterback play and
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: they're able to marry it up a little bit more.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: But I still feel like we're outside zone one play,
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: we're empty the next play, then we're gun run, then
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: we're gapped, and we're you know, I guess we're just
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: all over the place with the play calling. They're calling
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: play action plays that don't marry to the runs, like
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: they're calling outside zone bootleg play actions and they've only
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: ran outside zone a couple times. Like, I don't understand
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: how those things are gonna really get the defense out
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: of you know, certain coverage or or you know, get
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: the line to you know, take the cheese or whatever.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Like it just doesn't seem like that is a sequenced together.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Still enough, I didn't like the end of the half either.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: The big thing with the end of the half to
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: me is that you're backed up like you're inside your
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: own what ten or fifteen yard line? With the way
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: you play offense, you really think you're gonna go ninety
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: yards in two minutes, right, So the biggest thing there
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: they had to lead at that point too, I want
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: to say, the biggest thing there is playing the clock, right, Like,
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: just make sure you don't give the ball back to
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: the opponent. So when you run it for seven or
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: eight yards on first down and it's second and three,
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: pick up a first down so that you have four
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: more downs to now work the clock right, and if
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: you hit another one, then yeah, maybe now you start
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: to open it up and you start to play for points.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: But like at that situation, you're you can't view it
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: like you're playing for points until the offense starts to
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: move the ball significantly better. Right now, you are playing
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: field position, you're playing clock, you're playing you're managing the
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: game on the offense side of the ball. You're not
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: the seven Patriots where you're gonna go ninety yards in
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: three plays, Like that's just not going to happen. I
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: adn't like that. I put that as much on Mayo
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: as I put it on Van Pelt. I think Mayo
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: needs to get on the on the headset and be like, Hey,
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: this is what we're doing. Run the ball, you call it,
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: but we're running the ball. So I feel like that
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: it's a big thing with the coaching as well, and
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: we should mention twelve penalties, twelve and fourteen really twelve accepted,
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: even going, you know, into the game winning drive that wasn't.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: I love Hunter Henry. I think he's a good football player,
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: a good Patriot. But it's fourth and ten and you
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: jump off side and you make it fourth and fifteen.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: You already can't. You're already a team that doesn't pick
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: up ten yards very easily. You're definitely not picking up
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: fifteen yards at that point. The one coaching thing I
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: wanted to end with before we move on.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: I have one more two.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Okay, did you think at all that they should have
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: considered the field goal?
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Like for a second, I guess the TV broadcast was
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: talking about it a lot, Yeah, but talking about it
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: in the context of like game Tiger, game winning. Yeah,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: But I mean to your point. This is not an
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: offense that picks up a ton of yards. The defense
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: is gassed. They've been outrepped by thirty plays. So you're
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: either gonna have to recover an onside kick and still
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: go you know, thirty forty yards, right, or you got
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: to give the ball back to your defense who just
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: got absolutely gashed on the ground.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Yeah, like those are That was Girodd's reasoning, and I
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: think that's fair.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: I there's an argument to be made, but I think
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: you go for this is this team, you're playing with
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: house money, like you're in the game, go win it.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Yeah. That so Drod Meyo's argument was that the defense
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: felt it felt like the defense was gassed, and giving
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: the ball back to Miami there to try to get
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: a stop was probably less likely than maybe they wanted
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: it to be. But this is where the nerds. I'm
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: gonna defend the non nerds for a second. I'm gonna
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: be on your side of the street a little bit.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Sometimes in those situation.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Does the nerds want the field goal?
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: No, the nerds wanted to would always want to go
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: in that situation. So the nerds telling you to go right,
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: But the nerds are not always factoring in that this
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: is the Patriots offense that can't move the ball from
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: point A to point B.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: So is what Bill talked about the right?
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: So yeah, of course, like over the course of a
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: million trials and different teams in the league over the
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: last ten years, when you've put in you know, the
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: seven Patriots and the twenty thirteen Broncos and the twenty
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: eighteen Kansas City Chiefs and like all these other offenses. Yeah,
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: of course, like fourth and the odds and picking up
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: fourth and fifteen are better than field goal on side
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: kick three and out? Field goal? Is it for this team?
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: Is it really higher odds to pick up fourth and
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: fifteen than it is to find a way to get
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: the ball back of it?
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: But I think it is just because now.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: You're on the nerds side. No, you said that the
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: nerd the nerds would have gone for it. The nerds
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: did go for it.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: Wait, which, what pla are you talking about?
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: I'm talking about fourth and fifteen on the second to
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: last possession of the game.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'm not saying it because of the nerds,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: I know, But I just so you wanted the field goal.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: I would have considered kicking the field.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: I would I would have considered it. But here's the thing.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: The nerds they're not picking up fourth and fifteen.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: That defense was gassed. They'd been on the field for
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: seventy one plays. Yeah, they were not getting you stop.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: So you reverse nerd that because the nerds would have
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: gone for it as they do.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: Their nerds are right, but they're reasons. Sometimes the nerds
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: are right, but their reasoning is atrocious.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: It dawned on me after the game. It wasn't something
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: I thought about live, because you know my brain, it's
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: always go for it in that situation live. But after
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: the game, I was like, I don't know, Like, maybe
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: you do count on your defense to try to get
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: a three and out there.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: But here's the thing. If you're gonna count on your defense,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: because remember you have all three timeouts, right, but that's
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: the thing. So I never assume. So here's just a
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: philosophy of mine. Yeah, I never factor in an onside kick.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: I think the odds of getting it's winning the lottery. Like,
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: I'm not gonna budget myself around winning the lottery. So
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: to me, well, all right, if we're gonna put the
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: defense back on the field anyway, let's put them back
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: on the field at to seventeen, where you know, if
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: we get the ball back, we actually a favorable field
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: position versus Well, now, all right, the defense still need
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: to stop, but they got to get a stop all
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: the way over here, and we have to go that
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: much further on offense. Like I just and you know me,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: I'm the special teams guy, and no offense to special
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: teams coaches or kickers or anybody. I am only going
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: with an on side kick if I absolutely need it.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Like on side kick to me is all right, we're
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: down fourteen, like we have to get another possession here
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: right in that situation, an on side kick give me
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: pretty much anything on side kick is the less favorable
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: of the two options. It's just how I view the game.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: Okay, so is there You said you had to one
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: more coaching thing.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: Yeah, so this is going to be a first. I
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: have something that I put on both the ups and
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: the downs. I've probably done this before.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: You you just have to do something weird.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: And it's special teams. It's just special teams as a whole. Yeah,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: because they block a punt. Yes, again, the kick coverage
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: I thought was really good.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: But two just brutal penalties and a miss chip chip
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: shot field goals. So in a five point game, like
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: they lost this game in large part because of special teams.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: But I don't want to put the special teams all
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: the way on the downs because like you blocked a punt.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: Right and again, and that is a field flipping sit right.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: And again, you're covering kicks well and all that. So
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: roller coaster day for special teams is what I called it. Yeah, well,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: I mean, we'll talk to Jeremy Springer tomorrow. I'm kind
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: of curious, although at that point you're probably past it,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: but you know how he viewed it again, twelve men
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: on the field that gives Miami the ball back after
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: defense gets a stop. Again in a game where you know,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Gonzales ended it also I think it was two plays
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: later gets the pick, but in a game where the
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: play disparity was as big as it was, giving them
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: essentially an extra free possession. Brutal You take it to
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: lay a game on a punt non intentionally. They did
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: take one intentionally, and that's what Yeah, but may we
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: even said after the game it wasn't intentional.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: That is interesting.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: You're you're huddling up on third death, Like the punt
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: team doesn't huddle if you watch the game, and the
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: reason you don't huddle is because before the third down
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: you're basically deciding, all right, if they don't get it,
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: this is what we're gonna do. There's no decision making
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: like get on the field, kick the ball. Yeah, it's
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: that simple, except it wasn't in that case. And then again,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: you know, miss thirty three yard field goal. Missfield goals
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: are gonna happen. But in a game like this, come on,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: you gotta hit that. You gotta hit the gammes. So
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: not fulliing up, not fully you down. But there were
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: individual plays for special teams that deserve to be on
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: one list or the.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: Other barringer had a bad plus fifty punt two I
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: think in this game, right it was late. It was
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: like a forty one yard shank or something like that,
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: you know, the one up. I would also say, like
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: Marcus Jones fifteen yard punt return kind of gave them
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: some life there at the end of the game. That
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: was the other reason I was.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: Sitting there waiting because I came into this game being
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: like this gives me big time twenty twenty two Jets game.
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: Vies.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: You remember that one right two field goals in the
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: second quarter in the Marcus Jones and I said to
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Matt Doloff, I it was before the Patriots drive that
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: ended with the polkplay. Yeah, that we were potential feeling.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: He goes, So the Patriots go down and score. I'm like, no,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: Patriots punt. Patriots go for it three and out, Dolphins
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: have the punt back Marcus Jones Houser return. Just watch
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: and Jones makes that first guy Mitch I stood, Yeah,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god, here it's actually what
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: I happened. But yeah, roller coaster today for special teams.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: Yep, all right, let's take some of these phone calls.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: But before we do, the long fall I Day weekend
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: is almost here. F holiday weekend, Holliday?
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Do you really not understand what that is?
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Now? The long falliday weekend is almost here, and you
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: can get any long holiday weekend in the fall for
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: Columbus Day. Yeah, long holiday weekend, dude, we don't no,
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: or just like if you want to take a fall
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: weekend like people, you know, I'm not complaining like this
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: is a first world problem. A vacation in the.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: Fall a long holiday weekend.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: The long Falliday weekend is almost here, and you can

- 1:15:00Speaker 2: you left these people on hold for long, a long time.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: This is just like last week, so we're gonna go
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: through it.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: Let's take the.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Patty is an Agua? What's up? Patty?
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: Looks up?
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: Guys.
- 1:15:12Speaker 6: I love the open today. O.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Great, there you go, thank you? Oh yeah, it was
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: about you. There you go. What's up? Patty?
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: My Alex my wife budgets our life, like I've already
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: won the lottery, so I you know, I know what
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: you mean. So I just wanted to get your guys
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: opinion on what do you think the best way to
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: attack us This Houston offense is going to be? Do
- 1:15:34Speaker 6: you do you think he play more zone or do
- 1:15:37Speaker 6: you think you try and try and man him up
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: and you know, just go after him, you know, stee
- 1:15:43Speaker 6: if you can bring an extra man and possibly if
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: you do play man, have a spy. So J Stroud,
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: I mean, he's not like Lamar Jackson, but the guy
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: can't take off, and he can he can run and
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: pick up first downs and he's been doing a little
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: bit more of that this year. And I'll take it
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: off here so you can get some other guys up
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: and as always be guys are the best.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: Thanks Patty, thanks for the call and we're always love
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: to put you in the in the open as one
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: of the regulars. It's a good question. So statistically c J.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: Stroud has destroyed man coverage this year. He is best
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: in the league like Passer Rating EPA per play yards
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: for pass attempt just across the board as just torch
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: man coverage. Now the one caveat to that is that
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: he was torching man coverage with Nico Collins on the field.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: So now Nico Collins is not on the field, it's
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Stefon Diggs, it's Tank Dell. Remember Xavier Hutchinson, we talked
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: about him in the draft, I know we did. Yeah,
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: he's now on the Texans. He's out there for them
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: as well as like their big body outside receiver, kind
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: of like an Alan Lazard type. So they have those
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: three guys. They have Dalton schultzet tight end, who's a
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: good tight end. You know, he can make some things happen.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: But in theory they should be able to go man
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: to man against this team. Now do you do that
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: against Stroud Given the numbers, I should put in that
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: caveat though, we're still kind of in small sample size
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: of world right now with numbers like that. So he
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: hasn't had a ton of dropbacks against man coverage, but
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: the ones that he have has had have been heavily
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: in the Texans offense favor when teams play man to man.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: I mean, he also hasn't exactly played the best defenses
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: in the NFL. Yeah, yeah, to me, this one's pretty straightforward.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Gonzales on Digs yep. John Jones on Tank Dell, You're
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: gonna have to figure out with Xavier Hutchinson. And I've
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: talked about this Evan, that these bigger receivers give them trouble. Yeah,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: and this is maybe is a Bolden game.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: Or and been waiting for it.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Alex Austin game.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: Yeah, we've seen Marco Wilson out there.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: Marco Wilson yep. Alex Austin and I are right, that's
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: the right Marco Wilson game. Thank you.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: The X factor to me, so well, there's two. I
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: is you probably not surprised him infatuated with the Gonzalez
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: stuff on Diggs matchup, Yeah, because this guy cooked you
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: for years in Buffalo, and when they drafted Christian goan Zalez,
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: I think my first reaction was finally somebody to cover
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Stephan Diggs.
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Now they obviously never matched up last year. Diggs also
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: sort of gave up late last season. But now here
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: we go, Digs wide receiver one with with Collins out, Yeah,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: Gonzales healthy, let's see it. I asked Mike Pellegrino about
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: Digs today and he was very, very complimentary of him,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: like hasn't lost like talking about like hasn't lost a step,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: and Diggs has been good. Digs has been good this year.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Obviously it's gonna come to another level. But assuming that
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Gonzalez stays competitive, you're gonna hate this take for me.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: But this is this is the biggest test for Christian
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: Zalez for me, not Tyreek Hill, not a J. Brown,
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: not any of these other guys, because of what Diggs
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: has done to the Patriots.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: That that's fair. I mean, look is great. You're not
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: gonna hear it, But.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: So is Gonzalez goal. So taking that matchup out of it,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Dalton Schultz to me, has a chance to break this game.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: And I know he hasn't done. One of the stories
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: in Houston is like he maybe hasn't been involved as
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: he should be. Twenty two targets, fourteen catches for one
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: hundred and sixteen yards. But how are you, like, is
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: it del Pettis, It's probably not Marte Mapu. It shouldn't
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: be Jalen Hawkins. He needs to be on the back end. Yeah,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: so you know you're you're asking a rookie in his
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: sixth career game to go up against the guy who's
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: one of the better tight ends in the league. That's
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: a tough matchup, and that's somewhere where if I'm c. J. Stroud,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: I'm looking at Dalton Schultz a lot this week.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: So see about Kyle Dugar's status because I agree with
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: in Manton Man in theory. You know, you have the
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: Joneses to run around with Tank Dell, you have Nico
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: Collins or Stefan Diggs with Christian Gonzales, whatever third corner
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: you use, Marco Wilson, Isaiah Bolden. Maybe you play on
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: on Xavier Hutchinson, who's a nice player, but isn't you know,
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: you know, Yoshievs Alan Laza like that sort if.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: They're gonna beat you, you know, if they're gonna beat you.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Because Xavier Hutchinson is six catches for one hundred yards
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: in touchdown, Yeah, you kind of just tip your cap
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: at that, right.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: So Schultz is an interesting one. I do think there
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: is a world that Marte Maphu is the guy because
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: he covered tight ends a little bit last year when
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: he played last year. Kyle Duggart could come back and
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: be somebody that could get him At times. I'm still waiting.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: I'm waiting for the Zay Bolden.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: So I was gonna say, maybe this is where you
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: put Isaiah Bolden on him.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: So Isaiah Bolden's been working a lot in practice at
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: the nickel spot in the slot, playing more inside at
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: like slot safety, if you want to call it that.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: I love that role for him, and I love that
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: role in this offense or this defense. Excuse me, because
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: of the types of offenses that they play. These offenses
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: that they play really like to put the DB's in
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: the run game, like they try to put those guys
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: at the point of attack in the run game. If
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: you have somebody like Isaiah Bolden, who we know is athletic,
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: can tackle, you know, a good special teams player, good size.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: I do think that he can add an element that
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: the Jones is just don't necessarily bring to the table.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: So if you bring him in, you have him cover
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: the tight end, you have him play the nickels spot
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: in the run game. You put Jonathan Jones on Tank
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: Dell or Marcus Jones on tank Dell, and you play ball.
- 1:21:17Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Because this team, this Houston team, is a big twelve
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: personnel offense. They have the second highest rate of twelve
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: personnel in the league. They do it though, with a
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: lot of two back Like even though the guy's wearing
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: a tight end number, he plays a lot in the backfield,
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: And so that definitely gets in the way of some
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: of these smaller corners, you know, like if they're gonna
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: run outside zone off you're off the tackle with the
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: lead blocker with the full back, then that's a really
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: tough assignment for a Marcus Jones or a Jonathan Jones.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: So I look at Isaiah Bolden and I go back
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: to some of the things that I was saying earlier
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: about the coaching, and I really have picked a ton
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: on Van Pelt. But I would say sort of the
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: same thing to Covington and Mayo on the defensive side
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: of the ball a little bit too, Like I just
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: waiting to see something that it like wows me in
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: terms of like personnel or scheme or whatever. Like if
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: you're ramping up Isaiah Bolden to play a little bit
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: on defense, like at some point you gotta unveil that, right, Like,
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: at some point you got to bring that out. And
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: I feel like they should have maybe thought about it
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: against San Francisco. I thought they might because of how
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: much heavy personnel San Francisco plays. This is another team
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: that's in that Shanahan tree mold, that's gonna play a
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: lot of heavy personnel, that's gonna want to run outside zone,
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: that's gonna want to throw the ball to the tight end, Like,
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: let's try to get some beef in there. Let's try
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: to get some size and not a linebacker type, like
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: an actual cover player that can do it as well.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: And maybe that is Isaiah Bolden. But yeah, I like
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: manning up against this team.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: I do.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: Eldra is in North Carolina. What's up, Eldrid?
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: I'm doing well. How are you? Eldred?
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: All right? Heytory lap? Yet?
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: No? No victory laps on this show. We never do that.
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: Come on, now, come on, you got your boy? Did
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: you take your victory leaf? Get?
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: I did not, But you can take it for me
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: if you want.
- 1:23:11Speaker 3: I'll take mine. Dear time, y'all talk about DJ Stroup
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: got two years ago, big dick, you know, propulization. If
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: everybody's tapped me down. But I'm hoping everything plays better.
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: I'll see what y'all were saying about about ro Set
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: true enough, but I hope you hope to keep playing
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: a little bit better. But then all was picked on
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: the first game because you know we did Linst You're
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: kind of missed up. But I'm hoping and I'll be
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: watching the popcorm question is, do you think they could
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: find an outside receiver besides trying to make a trade
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: or whatever.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good question, Aldred, thanks for the call.
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: It's definitely the biggest thing outside the offensive line. It's
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: the biggest thing holding this offense back, I would say,
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: is the lack of vertical stretch from the outside, Like
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: they just don't have any that gets that threatens up
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: the field right from the outside. They've played Jalen Polk
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: a lot at the X, but that's just not his
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: natural position. I don't think moving forward. I think ideally
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: you have Jalen Polk and Pop Douglas as like the
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: Z slots in this offense, and then you have a
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: true X on the outside. Kaishan Boody has been getting
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: those opportunities. I'm not a big Kashan Boody guy. Frankly,
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: maybe it does come together for him moving forward. A
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: couple good run blocks over the last few weeks, had
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: a good catch on third down on a comeback route
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: in the game against Miami, So maybe I need to
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: give him some more credit. Obviously. The other hope is
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: that it was gonna be Javon Baker, right, but that
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: that hasn't happened, So I don't know if it's an
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: in house option to that. But I know next season offseason,
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: if we're not gonna just be talking about receivers, we're
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: gonna be talking specifically about outside receivers.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: Yeah, we're not gonna be doing slot guys, and I mean,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: you know any of that. It's it's gonna be big
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: outside receivers. I was texting you about, you know, a
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: couple guys in the draft. It was it this weekend
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: last weekend. Yeah, And I'm not necessarily saying these guys
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: are the specific answer. But if you're a Patriots fan,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: you want guys to watch Trey Harris from Ole, Miss.
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, who's the leading receiver in.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: The nation right now? Elick Elick, aoman or at Stanford
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: has definitely got to watch Nick Anderson if he plays
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: in Red River for Oklahoma. But it's I still think
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: it's got to be a veteran. I still think it's
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: got to be through trade. Still gonna keep talking about
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: DK Metcalf, but they definitely need that kind of guy.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Who's the kid from uh is it Colorado State?
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: Tory Horty.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, So he's gonna be an interesting one because he's
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: been he's playing again, but he missed some time because
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: he was hurt. He missed the Colorado games, he missed
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: Travis Hunter, and he's now playing hurt, and so there's
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: this question of is this who he really is?
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: Is he hurt?
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: The quarterback play hasn't been great, his stocks falling, But
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: I think you're gonna get a lot of people that
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: when he gets assuming he can kind of continues on
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: this trend. I think you're gonna get a lot of
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: people that, when we could get to the draft, are like, well,
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: but go look at his twenty twenty three tape. Yeah right,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: we'll go look at like what, oh he was hurt.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: Oh the quarterback sucked. And there's gonna be a lot
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: of people who kind of pointed him, I think for
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: the Patriots and say, well, if you take the tackle
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: in the first round, you take Tory Horton on Day two,
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: you might get a steal there.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: Yeah. I've liked what I've seen from him and the
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: limited things that I've seen explosive, explosive guy. Yeah, he
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: could definitely.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: Well, so that's the thing this year, he doesn't look
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: as explosed as explosive. But I think it was a
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: hamstring injury. Exactly what the injury was. But you know,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: when he gets healthy, he's going to be a pretty
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: pretty divisive player. Is groin injury.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: So there's guys like that, you know, I think of
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: a guy like a teses walker, you know, with Drake
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: May that is like a go ball artist, not necessarily contested,
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: but just a go ball artist on the outside that
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: when when they get that press man on the backside
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: and it's just a single high safety like Drake wants
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: to take that shot and if they can just get him,
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: somebody that can consistently win on that route, even if
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: it's not like this big route tree, high volume guy,
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: but it's just somebody that can win on that route.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: That's Trey Harris. Yeah, you're not gonna like Trey Harris
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: because he's not I mean, he's fast, but he's not
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: like fast. But the guy wins down the field. He
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: only wins down the field. He doesn't really win anywhere else.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: He wins down the field great at the catch point,
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: can get separation through the route because he's just big.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: I'm interested. I'm gonna be interest to see what you
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: think of trade. Okay, so let me ask you another
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: is the guy I sent you his like draft network,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: just like the pros and cons last week?
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: And I don't Okay, So let me let me ask
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: you this because I don't. I don't know. You know,
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: I haven't looked deep into in the board and all
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: that kind of stuff yet. So I will fully admit,
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: because you know, there's one wide receiver every single year
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: that I fall in love with and there's nothing you
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: can do about it.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be Luther bur I don't know about
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: two years ago.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: It was two years ago, it was a Flowers right.
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: This past year it wasn't really on my radar as
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: much because of the positions the Patriots were in. But
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: I liked all three of those guys.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: You you were like in on Elik Neighbors, Well you were, yeah.
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: Come on, it's like a Lamborghini.
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: Like. No.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: I remember we had the conversation where because everybody was
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: that Marvin Harrison and everybody else, it was close and
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: you were saying it was close and you were.
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: Right tattooed is. When I saw him at at the
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: LSU Pro Day, I was like, that guy's different. Like
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: that guy just is absolutely different and he has been different.
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: So I think your whole take this because you're gonna
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: have to watch some Ryan Williams in some I'm blanket
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: Jeremiah Smith. Yeah, you can't draft him for three years.
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: Okay, we're not gonna We're not. No, you're gonna be
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: on the twenty twenty seven.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: No, I know, but I think every time we talk
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: about receivers this year, you're gonna end up just getting
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: annoyed that they can't draft one of those guys.
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: Okay, so it's the cold. Get back to the point
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: that we're trying to make the.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: Colon mixed strategy. You draft Ryan Williams in the third
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: round when nobody else thinks of it this year, and
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: you tell Roger Goodell to deal with it.
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: Really smart strategy. That's it. Didn't the Celtics straft Larry
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: Bird like the year before. Yeah. So, and again I
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: haven't done any of my deep dives, but I'm telling you,
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: based off of what I've seen live, that Ted McMillan
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: is going to be an absolute animal, Like that guy's
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: going to be a problem in the league.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: I mean, you know where where I'm at with him.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: So my question to you isn't is he good? Because
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: we all know he's My question to you is where
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: right now is Teed McMillan projected to go in the draft?
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: And is there a world where they walk away with
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: a tackle and McMillan.
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: Not one of the two guys we've been talking about,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: not Campbell.
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: So this is not a scenario like, let's just play
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: it out, and I hope this doesn't happen because I
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: hope Drake May brings them on a what eleven game
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: winning streak or something like that, But let's play it out.
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: Let's say that they have a top three pick. Again,
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: there's not a world where they could trade up from
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: four back up into the first round and get a
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: guy like they would have to do.
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: What did Houston give up when they took Stroud and
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: Anderson back to back?
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: Right? But they started at twelve from the Deshaun Watson picks. Okay,
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: so I mean.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: Could they do it? I'm sure there's a price, but
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: you're talking about two top ten picks, essentially.
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: So he's so he's gonna go in the top ten.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: It looks like he's gonna be the number especially because
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: Luther Burden has not had a great year. Yeah, he's
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: gonna be the first receiver off the board. So do
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: you think that, essentially, dude, we go ten picks without
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: a receiver. If you want to do that, I'll give
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: you a player to watch, Okay, Ariante Iris Ursery, I'm
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: still kind of learning it. Arisery from Minnesota is a
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: left tackle.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: Yeah, heard the name.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: He's on the Freaks List. Yeah, he's six six three
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: point thirty, moves incredibly well. Now he's not polished like
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: Campbell and Banks are polished. And if you were to
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: do this, you're drafting like mcmill really good. But he's
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I think he's twenty, he's twenty or twenty one. You're
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: gonna have two really young raw players. Now, if it
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: works out, Drake May's twenty two erases you, right, and
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: you really have this course.
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: Sounds a little bit like the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: If you want to do it, what I would say,
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: watch some of Ursery and learn how to pronounce his name. Yeah,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: and it becomes do you trade down from three to
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: maybe five or six. If the board sets up a
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: certain way and the quarterback teams are there, take McMillan
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: and then trade back up, or maybe you just get
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: what you need in that deal, trade back up and
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: take Ursery somewhere in the twenties. If you want McMillan
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: in the tackle, you're gonna have to sacrifice the tackle.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: You're not gonna be able to get Campbell or Banks.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: I do wonder, and we've got some ball left to play,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: so don't hold me to this. I do wonder if
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: there's gonna be some people when we get to that
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: point that say I saw enough for Mersery. Let's let's
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: have some fun with trades, and let's move around the
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: board and see if we can end up with both
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: of these guys.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: I just the two biggest things to me with receivers.
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: And I texted you this morning about Keon Coleman. He
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: was not having an awful rookie year, but he's not
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: having a great rookie year either. And I felt the
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: same way about Quentin Johnson two years ago, who's in
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: the same boat. The two things that you need for receivers.
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: You don't need elite speed, You don't need Tyreek kill speed,
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: but you need to be able to run like it's
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: a skill position, like you're not four to six to
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: one for Keon Coleman is just not gonna cut it
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: all right. The second thing that you need is that
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: more of an eye test thing, I would say, which
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: is like a looseness to your body, right, like you
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: want to have a looseness or you know, an ability
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: to sink your hips and get in and out of
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: cuts and change directions. And it's not necessarily quickness. It's
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: more like smoothness. And I actually think that Jalen Polk
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: has this as a trade. He's not overly explosive, but
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: he's smooth. I look at McMillan and I see the
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: whole package. I see size, I see explosive, miss I
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: see his ability to get in and out of the
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: route like he. Drake London, I think is probably the
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: fair comp for him.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: I mean, you know where I'm at, ceiling comp Yeah.
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: I like to be fair. I don't like to compare
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: guys to Hall of famers talking about Mike Kelly. Yeah,
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: so I think Drake London is probably like the fair comparison,
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: but with stable quarterback play which Drake London hasn't had.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: He's probably a thousand yard receiver every single year out
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: of the gate. Like he's at like eight hundred the
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: first two years of his career with bad quarterback play.
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: So that's not a by any means like selling it short,
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: like that's a walking onto the field and you're a
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: thousand yard receiver. I'm really really high on him so far.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: So the big thing for him with me, he's had
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: some games where he's just disappeared. Yeah, and it's going
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: to be about consistency and with young players that sometimes
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: what happens Like young guys, it takes them all to
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: be consistent. But it's it's I want to be careful.
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: I say this when I say mental stuff, like I
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: think the kid from everything I read about him, like
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: cares about football, cares about all that. It's just the
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: ability to walk in for sixty minutes week in and
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: week out that's going to have to get there. I'll
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: tell you this though. So they have BYU this week,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: who's a good team, and that'll be interesting. And that's
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: at BYU next week. Arizona Colorado. McMillan was the one
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: guy that really had success against Travis Hunter last year
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: that this game is Travis Hunter.
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: Super Bowl and it's for the draft.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: It yeah, it's also Ted McMillan super Bowl because it's
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Travis Hunter. It's this is one he's not playing Michigan.
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: So we have a long flight next week in London.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: This is one that I might actually watch in season
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: for you.
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: How do you how do you like?
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: Well?
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: How do you like them?
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: But it's on Saturday.
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: That's a big bummer. Okay, maybe I can watch it
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: on Sunday on the way back from the game.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: See I yeah, okay, I'll tell you what you want
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: one to watch on the flight? Yeah, I gotta.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: Find nothing to do for hours, so I just problem.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: I know, well learn you want to learn a little
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: bit to back up your take last week or sorry,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: two weeks ago Michigan Minnesota, two good edge rushers against
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: airs and maybe you watch them when you say you
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: know what here we and then you watch you watch
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: that on the flight there? Yeah, maybe you like what
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: you see from Ariante flight back Teed McMillan all over
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: Travis Hyder to take and now you have the take
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: and you have the information to back it up. So
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: there's your homework Minnesota, Michigan from two weeks ago.
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: Good game too.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: Good game.
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: Yeah, give the the raw tackle to Scotty p Get
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: him in the strike system, get him in the program.
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: He'll be fine, right.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: I mean, you you watch him, you tell me this
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: is this is where you come in. I tell you
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: who's on the board. I tell you the generalities of
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: the player. You put the nuts and bolts together.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: All right, Melvin is in Tennessee. What's up, Melviny? What's upright?
- 1:36:00Speaker 5: I had a general question. I know I watched Jade
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: Daies a lot since our uh sis on my fantasy game,
- 1:36:06Speaker 5: But when I'm watching, of course our offense, I don't
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: see a lot of like people flashing open uh fast.
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: I know, I mean you just talked about it, but
- 1:36:16Speaker 5: like the outlet routes and people like that that I
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: can you can particularly see that's the open fast, especially
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: since our line situation is what it is. So I'm
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: looking for this app to really as this is, we're
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: making this change, to really have something when he's making
- 1:36:35Speaker 5: these play calls, to have some body to the indies
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: places like able to you know, Drake Macon get the
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: ball too fast. So since I haven't like looked too
- 1:36:43Speaker 5: much into like the All twenty two version of it
- 1:36:46Speaker 5: and stuff like that. Are you seeing anybody Evan that
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: within these plays that could be an outlet to get
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: the ball out fast too, if you know, should be
- 1:36:55Speaker 5: one of his first reads. Yeah with Jakobe.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, it's a good question, Melvin. Thanks for the call.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: I'm just gonna let you go and I'll answer it. Yeah.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing. The two biggest guys to
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: me and that when I hear that are Pop Douglas
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: who can get open quick over the middle of the
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: field and be that sort of quick hitting route type
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: of guy. And I still feel like they haven't completely
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: maximized the backs out of the backfield fully, especially Antonio Gibson,
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: who I think is one of the few players that
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: they have on offense that can actually, you know, create
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: an explosive play like, has like some dynamic movement ability.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: So when it comes to outlets like I would love
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: to see some of those matchups be used a little
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: bit more, especially when they get man to man coverage.
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: Like I understand that their line hasn't necessarily been great,
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: but you know, try to run a pick play into
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: the flat for one of the backs, or try to
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: run them on a wheel or an angle or like
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: something over the middle of the field that can get
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: them out of the backfield. And if teams are gonna
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: put five or six guys on the line of scrimmage,
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: then run an angle route over the middle of the
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: field where the linebacker has to react to Texas. Yeah,
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: a little Texas route. Have him react to it, right,
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: because now he's dropping out of the rush to try
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: to cover the guy. Maybe you get him out of position,
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: maybe you get him off guard. Maybe it's the edge
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: guy that's actually responsible. And now you have the angle.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: You know, you have the leverage she created in the
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: middle of the field. Those are the little things that
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: I'm hoping is more in this offense, especially with Drake,
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: because he likes to throw the middle of the field.
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: He's got the arm for it, and he's got the
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: eyes for it, and he'll get the ball out quickly
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: into those windows if he can.
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: I'll just add one more player to that list, and
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: I don't necessarily have a massive exit and no reason
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: to back this up. It's just kind of a football idiom, right,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: veteran tight end for a young quarterback. Yeah, Hunter, Henry
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: safety blanket.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good one. Let's take Todd. What's up Todd?
- 1:38:46Speaker 7: Hey, guys, you keep saying that you want to throw
- 1:38:48Speaker 7: the pistol and stuff. Can you kind of describe what
- 1:38:50Speaker 7: the pistol is and maybe other sets or formations that
- 1:38:53Speaker 7: would really help Drake when he's starting, because I know
- 1:38:56Speaker 7: you guys said that they need to tailor the offense
- 1:38:58Speaker 7: for him, So I just want to kind get a
- 1:39:00Speaker 7: better idea of what exactly.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: That would look like.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: Yeah, no problem, Todd. I'll talk pistol all day, so
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: I'll take that opportunity. So the pistol is the quarterback.
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: This is what everybody who saw the clip last week
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: was turning in for. This is what they knew there,
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: what they thought they were getting.
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: The pistol is the quarterbacks in the gun. Okay, so
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: he's not under center, he's back. He's in the gun.
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: But instead of the running back being offset to his
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: left or to his right, the running back is directly
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: behind him in the pistol.
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: Isn't the quarterback like a little further up than he
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: would be.
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: And maybe slightly yeah? Uh, And he's directly behind him
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: in the pistol. So what it adds is gaps on
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage because the back the easiest, the
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: simplest way to put it. The back can still go
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: both ways right so he can still go to the left,
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: or he can still go to the right, whereas when
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: he's off set usually you only go the opposite way.
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: So if he's offset right, you're running left. If he's
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: offset left, you're running right. So in the pistol it
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: allows you to have that opportunity need to run the
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: back both ways. The other thing that it allows for
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: is that the quarterback on play action can still turn
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: his back to the defense because he has to turn
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: around and hand the ball to the running back, so
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: he can still turn the back to the defense, which
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: helps you sell play actions. So now it's not gun action,
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: it's pistol action. So you still have the quarterback in
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: that whole mechanics of we're turning my back to the defense,
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: we're hiding the ball, we're making you think it's run.
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: That whole element still exists. So if you want to
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: see what it looks like in practice, like actually go
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: watch it on tape. Go watch the Miami Dolphins with
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: Tua they run pistol at a league high rate. They
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: always have under McDaniel. McDaniel has taken the Kyle Shanahan
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: run game and he's adapted it to the pistol because
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: Tua is more comfortable operating in the pistol than he
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: is under center too. His short right so like he
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: doesn't see over the line very well, so they have
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: him running out of the pistol instead of running out
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: of under center, which allows them still to run, stretch
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: and run bootleg and all that kind of stuff. So
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: it's a way, especially for quarterbacks that are either not
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: comfortable running from under center, or in Drake's case, a
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: quarterback that's not experienced running from under center, it's a
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: way for them to still run those mechanics of being
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: under center without actually being under center. I know that
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: was a lot. Is the best way I could do it,
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: but yeah, that's the main thing. So you're still adding
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: the same amount of gaps on the line of scrimmages
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: as you would under center, which is big. Now, final
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: thing with the pistol not to get everybody to and confused,
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: not keep going. The final thing that's really good about
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: the pistol is the option run game. So you can
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: run quarterback design, quarterback option, whether it's RPO, zone read,
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: whatever the case may be, you run it out of
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: the pistol. That again allows for everybody to go in
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: two different directions. So now think about it from a
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: defensive perspective, you are dealing with a lot of conflict, Like,
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: there's a lot of problems that that's presenting to the defense.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: So Miami Baltimore with Lamar Jackson, big pistol team. If
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: you want to look at a team that's like not
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: a great offense that does it, the Tennessee Titans run
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: a lot of pistol with Will Levis and Brian Callahan
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: down there with the Titans. Atlanta has notoriously been a
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: very heavy pistol team and their offense was Zach Robinson. Now,
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: so there are teams that the pistol's back. The pistol's back,
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: it's in vogue, it's going nuts. Everybody loves the pistols.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: Whatever happens in college football hits the NFL five ten
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: years later.
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm a big fan, as you can tell.
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: The main other thing, Drake May ran a ton of
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: pistol at North Carolina, So they ran a lot of
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: pro style concept out of the pistol at North Carolina.
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: So that's a nice way to kind of compromise from Yeah,
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: we want our offense to run a lot of under
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: center concepts, but our quarterback is not very comfortable doing it.
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: So here's here's a compromise that that's what I if
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: they did, like I said earlier, if they do that,
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: then it's I'm going to be on the moon. I'm
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: going to be out of this earth, out of this
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: entire world. So that that's a big one I'm looking for. Okay,
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: we're going to take one last call, and there's a
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: couple of emails and your your little game that I
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: want to get to as well. Eric is in San Francisco.
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: What's that Eric? Hey?
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: How's it going? Guys?
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: Hey?
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: I had a question. I know, like Alex Van Pelt's
- 1:43:30Speaker 4: play calling has been brought into question kind of more
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: and more over the past few weeks. I'm just wondering,
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: this is not my sport. I actually work in professional basketball,
- 1:43:41Speaker 4: so I've been trying to translate a bunch of this,
- 1:43:43Speaker 4: like how hard is it to call plays effectively when
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: you're not necessarily confident in your personel's ability to execute
- 1:43:52Speaker 4: those plays. That's that's what I've been trying to stuff out, right,
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: how much of it is on sequencing, but how much
- 1:43:58Speaker 4: pressure is brought to bear because he doesn't actually know
- 1:44:03Speaker 4: whether or not his players will reliably execute what he
- 1:44:06Speaker 4: wants to call. So I'll thank you for the time
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: and I'll take the answer.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: Thanks, Eric. Yeah, I think that that's a fair point.
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: You know, there's definitely the school of thought that he's
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: searching for answers, right, Like, you know, we're trying to
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: run something that works here and they're searching for answers. Look,
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: every coach is always going to blame it on execution,
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: and every player is always going to blame it on
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: the coach. Like that's that's just sort of how it works.
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: Like when he gets up there. You know, today I
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: thought he was valid in saying, well, you know, everybody's
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: kind of picking on my play calls. At the end
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: of the first half, you know, we had two opportunities
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: with the guys open to maybe move the ball off
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: of second and three, and we just didn't hit the
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: throws or he didn't win on the route, I think
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: is what he said about second down and on third
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: down he said he didn't hit the throw. So those
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: are execution based errors in their mind, not play calling errors.
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: We would probably counter with, well, your players in a
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: position to succeed, right, you know.
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: And it's also you know, okay, so he doesn't trust personally,
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: doesn't have the best personality. You have an eighteen million
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: dollar guard, yep. You have a running back you just paid,
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: You have a tight end that's a captain, Like, there
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: are guys you have that you can trust, and he
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: involved and is he doing the most to get those
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: guys involved? I don't think that's been the case.
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: Okay, a couple more emails and then we're going to
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: get to your your was it first career? Start with
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: the Patriots? Right? I like it? So I can't find
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: the exact email, but it was a point that I
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: wanted to hit on. Somebody emailed in and said, do
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: we expect Drake may to be able to improvise or
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: do we think that Alex van Pelt in this offense
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: is going to ask him to really stay in the pocket.
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: And for lack of a better tournament to other people
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: like to put it, play quarterback right instead of playing
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: off script. I would just say that I maybe em
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: in a minority here with this opinion. I know that
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: I could care less how we get from point A
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: to point B. I could care less if he's running
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: for first downs, if he's off script magic on third
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: down to get the first down, or if he's hitting
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: an in rhythm dig route, I could really care less. Like,
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: I honestly could not care less. I don't think it
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: that's surprising for you, because you know my infatuation with
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: certain quarterbacks that play that way, So it just doesn't
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: really matter to me that much. But I would not
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: want to see training wheels on Drake Many.
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: No, I'm with you, don't box the kid in too much,
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: and like he can't turn the ball over left and
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: right right. If he's making bad decisions, tell him. But
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: I also don't think you want to limit the tools
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: at his disposal either. You want to let him do
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: like that's part of the reason he was such a
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: high pick, because his ability to do that stuff. If
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: you're gonna put him out there and not let him
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: do that, what's the point. Just stick with Jacob was.
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: Said, Yeah, I understand too that certain people will say, well,
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: that's a lot to put on him to like all
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: of a sudden, make everything work because he's doing all
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: of it on his own. He drafted him third over,
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: but that's the point, Like, that's why you drafted him.
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: You're putting more on him if you tell him not
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: to improvise. Yeah, let him do what comes naturally to him.
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: That's allowing him to succeed.
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: Yeah. It just feels to me like when you watch
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: his film at North Carolina, when you watch him in
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: the preseason and the mop up duty stuff against the Jets,
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: it almost settles him down when he makes a play
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: like that, because that's that's him, right, Like that's him
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: making the play. So like when he picked up the
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: fourth down with his legs against the Jets, he hit
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: a couple throws after that, it felt like, it's said,
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: he like kind of got his breath there a little
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: and he was like, Okay, I made a play. We're good, right.
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: You know when he plays at North Carolina, you see
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: that too at times where you know he'll he'll hit
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: a throw on the move or he'll scramble or whatever,
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: and then like all of a sudden, good things will
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: start to happen from there. I think the same thing
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: is true for like Mahomes and Allen, Like, I feel
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: like a lot of the time where it's almost you know,
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: sometimes when they're not having like their best game, it's
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: like a big scramble or it's a big improvised play
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: something along those lines that gets them going. So I
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: definitely wouldn't hold him back from that one bit. There
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: was another email here. There's a little game before we
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: play your game, all right. This is from David in Madrid.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: He's a big time listener of ours. I wanted to
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: shout him out and I read his email here. So
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: he says that he wants to play a game with
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: a few positions on the roster, and we have to
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: choose if it's easier, you know, better, easier, whichever way
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: you want to put it to address this next offseason
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: through the draft or through through free agency, slash trade,
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: slash trade. I was going to say better in market
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: or the draft. Yeah yeah, okay, Edge, Edge Rusher.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: I don't know. It's a really thin free agency.
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: Class, right, yeah, it's usually not great, and it's.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: A decent draft class. I'm gonna say draft.
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna say draft for Edge as well. I
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: feel it's a pretty deep edge class from everything that
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: I've heard in the draft. So maybe a Day two
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: guy becomes like a Jennings Zuche, you know, tight for
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: you cool at that. He So these are his positions
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: of need, not necessarily in order. But middle linebacker.
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: Uh, I'm gonna say free agency or trade. There's just
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: not a lot of good Harold Perkins from LSU's a stud,
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: but he's gonna go in the first round. Outside of him,
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: I don't think this is an amazing linebacker. D I
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: haven't done no work on linebackers, but very initial take.
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: Okay. He also just I don't want David to get
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: to get crapped on. He's saying that he understands left
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: tackle is probably gonna be the first round draft.
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: Draft draft, draft, draft, draft, draft, both tackles, draft, draft.
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: Draft, center. I'm a draft the center guy.
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: I it might be easier, it would be easier to
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: get an immediate impact player in free agency. But assuming
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: David Andrews is gonna come back next year, which he
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: says is his plan, yeah, you can get a guy
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: fourth fifth round, developmental player, sit him for a year,
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: ease him in. It makes more sense in the draft.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that to me, that's a Day three pick on
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: the draft if you really really like a UDFA. I
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: mean they I thought that they like Charles Turner that
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: one didn't work out, but like maybe it's along those
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: same lines.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: I think this is a decent center class.
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: Yea, you know, the David Andrews undrafted guy, Like, yeah,
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: you know, there's ways to find centers later on in
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: the draft X receiver.
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: Free agency trade trade really not free agency trade.
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: You're not You're so are you out on T Higgins
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: because it seems like you're a little out on T Higgins.
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: I would take I wouldn't be upset if they added
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: T Higgins, but I just don't think he is the
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: same ceiling as some of these other guys.
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think he came Metcalf's leaving Seattle, but
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: we'll see.
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: So you would take if it was if it was
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: October twenty twenty one and I said ty Tyreek Hill
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: might leave Kansas City, you would have called me a lunatic.
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: That's true, So fair enough.
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: That's the thing with these guys. You never know.
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: Okay, free safety.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: Veteran, the safety playing college is weird right now. It's
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: just all boxed safeties.
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I because they're all quarters based defenses.
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: There might be a free free safety in this draft.
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: I know there's actually two really good free safeties in
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: next year's class. So if you can get a bridge guy, great,
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: But I know that this also might not be a
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: super popular opinion in terms of their team building.
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: But it doesn't feel to me as though they look
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: at safety the same way as some people on the
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: outside look at safety. I think they, well, I should prefaces.
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: We don't know what Jabriel's Preppers's situation is moving forward,
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: so there's that factor. And by the way, I just
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: want to like what Geradmeo said the other day is
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: exactly what I always say. Just put that there free
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: safety if they have Peppers, and it's a delicate situation,
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: so that's why I'm kind of like trying to be
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: delicate about it. If they have Peppers and Dugger together,
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: then I think they feel really good about that being
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: their starting safety tandem, even though neither one of them
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: is like a true you know, Devin mccordy center fielder.
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: I don't necessarily think that they look at that as
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: like a major need. If they have both those guys
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: in the mix. I actually think they really like the
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: way it's put together right now with Jalen Hawkins as
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: like the third guy. Yeah, so I don't necessarily look
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: at that one as a screaming need. All right, let's
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: get to let's wrap it up with Drake may Well.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: This is kind of the take I had earlier Evan,
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: which was, like, my expectations aren't super high for Drake
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: may on Sunday. YEP, still think he absolutely can be
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: the face of the franchise. But you look at just
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: real quick for context, Caleb William's debut fourteen to twenty
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: nine to ninety three yards, two picks, jayde and Daniels
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: seventeen to twenty four, one hundred and eighty four yards,
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: no touchdowns, no picks, did have two rushing touchdowns. Bo
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: Nicks twenty six to forty two, one thirty eight no touchdowns,
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: two picks did have a rushing touchdown.
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: So it was kind of bad.
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: Obviously, these are guys that you know, are now being
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: talked about very highly. There is some growth that comes
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: with it, and so I went back and obviously, you know,
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: different quarterbacks, different errors, but it's like, all right, yeah,
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: what did other Patriots quarterbacks do in their debuts like
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: it's the expectation. So I'm obviously it goes more than
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: the stat line. We're gonna have to break down the film,
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: but I'm just gonna give you the stat line. You
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: react to what you think your takeaway would be if
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: that was Drake's first game.
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: And then you try to guess who the quarterback is.
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: I'll start you off with the kind of an easy
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: one eleven and nineteen, one hundred three yards, rush touchdown,
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: rushing touchdown.
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: Are you gonna tell me who it is?
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: No, you gotta guess. That's part of the game.
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: Oh, I had to guess, and this is Patriots quarterbacks.
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: Yeah. So, and this is Cam Newton's debut. He threw
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: for like four hundred yards. I tweeted this out and
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: people got mad at me. I didn't talk about Cam Newton.
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: Cam Newton's Patriots debut. He'd been in the NFL for
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: a decade, right, this is NFL debut with the Patriots.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: Reading the stat line again, eleven and nineteen, Yeah, one
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: hundred three yards, no touchdowns, no picks, rushing touchdown, koy
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: we said yes, yeah. Ironically against the Houston Texas the
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: Houston Texas. Yeah, so if Drake completes, you know, about
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: fifty percent of his passes one hundred yards runs went in,
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: doesn't turn the ball over, how do you feel?
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: Did they win twenty seven to nothing like they did?
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: Then we're just talking about his performance. Honestly, I think
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: the outcome is irreleve like the final score, Like, unless
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: he gets a two minute triil, we evaluate him there
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: like how does he do?
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: But sure I would be a little underwhelming with that,
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: only because part of the reason why they're making the
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: switch is to add more to the passing game, and
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: that's that's more of the same with the passing game,
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: all right.
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: You're also gonna notice the theme here that first game
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: production hardly indicative of what the player becomes. Yep, fourteen
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: to thirty four yea one hundred and seventy three yards touchdown, throws,
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: two picks drew butsoe nope.
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: Queterback for the pack. Jesus you know I'm not that
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: old Steve Grogan.
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, how you feel fourteen to thirty four, hundred
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: and seventy three yards, touchdown, two picks.
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: I actually think that's pretty realistic because of nine for
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: thirty last last week for Josh Allen against his defense.
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: Two picks is tough. I'm probably still a little down
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: on that performance.
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: So I'll give you the one. This. This is the guy.
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: Like when I look at all these stat lines, when
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: I put in and you can read this, I wrote about
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: this this morning at ninety five Sports of dot com,
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: and I look at all these stat lines, this is
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: the one that I think will end up being the
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: closest to what Drake Maye does.
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: Fourteen to thirty, Yeah, one hundred forty eight yards, two
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: touchdowns and a pick. Scott's oak no two bludsoe. Yes, Okay,
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: I knew it was Bloodze knew it was one of
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: those two they lost to the Bills. Fourteen like right
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: around fifty percent, not two hundred yards, but maybe gets close.
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: I think he does throw a couple touchdowns, but there's
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: gonna be there's gonna be a turnover in there, like
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: he's gonna turn the ball over. How'd you feel about
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: that stat.
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: Line to me again?
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: Fourteen to thirty, one hundred forty eight yards, two touchdowns
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: and a pick.
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd be okay with that. I know it's like pretty.
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: The stat line is just could be deceiving. Yeah, I
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: think that that would be okay?
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: All right? Uh twenty four to thirty three, Yeah, two
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: hundred and sixty four yards one touchdown.
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: Mac Jones Nope. Scott's Olac Nope, not no. I know
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: one of them is Zoe.
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: What we haven't done Zoe yet. I'm gonna get you
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: keep guessing Zoe. So I'm like, a right, I'll do
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: Zoe later. More modern, Brady, Nope. Jimmy garoppolo, Jimmy g
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: Twenty four to thirty three.
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: Took me seven to one on that one.
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: Twenty four thirty three, two sixty four in a touchdown.
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: Yeah, Jimmy was great.
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: If he shows up like Jimmy and Arizona, now he's
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: then got to make it through the next week and
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: stay healthy.
- 1:56:24Speaker 2: But if you remember Jimmy, the next week in the
- 1:56:26Speaker 2: first half was like had like three tundies.
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: Yeah, he took the most unnecessary and that was it.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: All right, A couple more twenty twenty nine to sixty one,
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: two touchdowns and a pick.
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: Mac Jones Nope, God damn we already did Jimmy right, Brady, Nope,
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: you're really throwing me off.
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: Now you kept you kept guessing him. Zoe, Zoe, Zoe. Arguably,
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: Zoe had one of the best debuts for a Patriots
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: quarterback ever.
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: Zoe had swagman. Zoe's out there ripping it on the road.
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: Beats the Colts twenty twenty nine, sixty one, two touchdowns
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: and a picks. Like, realistically, obviously that Jimmy stat line's great, Like,
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: this is a realistic high end for me for Drake Man.
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: Two hundred and sixty nine yards.
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: To sixty one sixty one twenty twenty nine, two sixty one,
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: two touchdowns.
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be yeah, that would be great, all right.
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: Six a a couple more, Six of fifteen, two hundred
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: and seventeen yards, two touchdowns and a pick.
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: Tom Brady, No, you're.
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: Not gonna guess who this is, Rohan David, Nope. I
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: don't think we're Hondavers starting Patriots. It's the first round pick.
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: It's a first round pick. Yeah, Jim Plunkett, Yes, oh
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: my god. Six for fifteen one twenty seven, two touchdowns
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: and a pick.
- 1:57:34Speaker 2: Do you know how many people have called in that
- 1:57:36Speaker 2: are like older Patriots fans and been like doing the
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: same thing. They Jim included here.
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: That would be I could that would be wild because
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: he threw two touchdowns. But al right, two more, twenty
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: nine of thirty nine, two hundred and eighty one yards
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: in a touchdown the goat.
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: That's got to be brave.
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: Nope, twenty nine to thirty nine.
- 1:57:58Speaker 2: And this is my point.
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: This my point, it's not indicative. Twenty nine to thirty nine,
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: two hity one in the touchdown before you guess who
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: it is. If that's Drake May's statline, twenty nine to
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: thirty nine, two eighty one touchdown, no turnovers, how are
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: you feeling?
- 1:58:11Speaker 2: Feeling pretty good?
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: As people doing backflips down Route one? Mac Jones Mac Jones,
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: so a backflips down Root one for mac Jones' debut.
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: So I didn't know exactly what his stats were, clearly
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: because I just guessed wrong. I didn't know exactly what
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: his stats were. But what I did remember from that
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: game was that Mac Jones in that game had four
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: or five really good balls, like really really high level throws.
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: And they didn't win the game, right, they lost to Miami.
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: I believe it.
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: David Harris fumbled Yah.
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: Week one, seventeen sixteen, they.
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: Didn't win the game. They only scored sixteen points. It
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: wasn't like he let the world on fire. But we
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: came out of that game with like four or five
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: throws where we were like, these were real deal quarterback throw,
- 1:58:50Speaker 2: you know, franchise quarterback type plays. So just because maybe
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: it's in my time covering the team, so I remember
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: it the best. But Jimmy g in Arizona is another
- 1:59:02Speaker 2: really good example of the of like a peek to me. Yeah,
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: but Mac Jones in that game feels somewhat realistic that
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: he makes like four or five really good plays, but
- 1:59:13Speaker 2: they end up losing a close one, and like the
- 1:59:16Speaker 2: production isn't honestly isn't all that much better. But you
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: just come away from the game feeling really good about
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: the quarterback.
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: And this is kind of my point this. You're not
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: looking for the overall performance. You're looking for individual things
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: you can hang your hat on. All right, last one,
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: well we know who this is now, Well, all right,
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: so just tell me how you would feel, tell me
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: what you're gonna say, what your opening take is gonna
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: be next week? If this is Drake May's first game
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: thirteen to twenty three hundred and sixty eight yards, no touchdowns.
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: No picks, not great. No, And I'm assuming that's Brett
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: tom Brady.
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: They won forty four to thirteen with.
- 1:59:48Speaker 2: That that that line. That's because he's the goat.
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: No, it's because Antoine Smith. Now they had the game of.
- 1:59:52Speaker 2: His defense had to play in the defense game and
- 1:59:55Speaker 2: you know, the defense of the day light in the box.
- 1:59:57Speaker 2: Because Brady was out there, they knew he could sling
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: it and they you know, the whole thing because Tylaw
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: Otis Smith. I think Terrell pick in that game they got.
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: I was Peyton man I was a big Otis Smith, Truther.
- 2:00:10Speaker 2: Otis Smith is a big part of that team.
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: No, you're absolutely right. And obviously Antoine Smith ran all
- 2:00:16Speaker 1: over that coldseam. I think Bruskie had a pick in
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: that game. Dude. They they tortured Peyton Manning in that game.
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: So I got a look. But like so you get
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: kind of the point of the experiment there, which is.
- 2:00:26Speaker 2: Not nobody great, like nobody over three hundred yards or I.
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: Think so had the or Jimmy had the most. Antoine
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: Smith ran twenty two times for ninety four yards and
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: two touchdowns. They got picks from Roman fifer Otis Smith, Tylaw.
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: Roman is another one of those, like underrated Patriot guys.
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: And Bobby Hamilton, Ridick Parker and Anthony Pleasant all had sacks.
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: I feel like, uh and Roman Forced the Roman day
- 2:00:54Speaker 2: was underrated. Good player, good football player. But anyway, so
- 2:00:57Speaker 2: Brady obviously, probably Jimmy g against Arizona is the peak. Yeah,
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: out of all those, I'm sorry Zoe, no, no offense
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: to Zoe. Zoe played great too. I saw some of
- 2:01:08Speaker 2: the highlights. Somebody posted them from the Sports up.
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: Those are the only two over Oh, Mac Jones are
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: the only three over torty yards.
- 2:01:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but in my time covering the team, because I
- 2:01:16Speaker 2: wasn't here yet for Jimmy either my time covering the team,
- 2:01:19Speaker 2: I know, it's only been a couple you know. It's
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: like mac Jones and Bailey Zappi basically, but Mac Jones's
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: debut against Miami. Like I said earlier, there are four
- 2:01:29Speaker 2: or five throws that will post on Twitter, and we'll
- 2:01:31Speaker 2: go all around the world that everybody, Oh my god,
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: look at you. A great throw here by Drake May.
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: But we'll probably get on the show on Tuesday and
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: Paul Pirillo will tell me well, they only scored sixteen points,
- 2:01:41Speaker 2: Like it really wasn't great. They scored sixteen points in
- 2:01:44Speaker 2: Week one again Cincinnati two, right, you know, and that
- 2:01:46Speaker 2: sort of thing. So I I'm all for that, though,
- 2:01:49Speaker 2: Just show me some flashes, Just show me some promise.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: So you don't want the thirteen win with thirteen completions.
- 2:01:56Speaker 2: I mean, I'll take it, but is that going to happen?
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: Well, what happens next? Happens again? Then I'll take that
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: all day.
- 2:02:07Speaker 2: Like you like to say, is City Sweeney going to
- 2:02:09Speaker 2: show up to your house tonight or are we going
- 2:02:10Speaker 2: to be on all right realistic here? Which one are
- 2:02:14Speaker 2: we going with?
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: Fair enough?
- 2:02:17Speaker 2: All right? That does it here? As you can tell,
- 2:02:20Speaker 2: we're excited here for Drake May's debut, and Alex and
- 2:02:23Speaker 2: I will both be at the game on Sunday. We'll
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: be back next Thursday, same time, same place to break
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: down Drake May's first start in the NFL. Actually it
- 2:02:32Speaker 2: might not. We have to check on the time because
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: I'm going to London, so we'll have to figure that out.
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: But I do think we're taking the Red Eye on
- 2:02:39Speaker 2: Thursday night, so we might be able to still leave
- 2:02:41Speaker 2: the show here. But I don't know that for a fact.
- 2:02:43Speaker 2: But before we sign off, football season is here and
