- 0:00Speaker 1: And I showed you how deep the rabbit hole goes.
- 0:10Speaker 2: All right, Here we are with one of my favorite guests.
- 0:12Speaker 2: He loves me.
- 0:14Speaker 3: The feeling sometimes is not mutual, but that's fine. Data
- 0:17Speaker 3: Dish is delivered and powered by rap Sodo. We welcome
- 0:21Speaker 3: in Lance Bresdowski from the player development analyst at Marquee Network.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Let's get right into it and the pressure of the
- 0:30Speaker 3: Cubs are facing of the deadline. We spoke to Patrick
- 0:32Speaker 3: Mooney earlier of the Athletic and a Northside territory. What
- 0:36Speaker 3: are you expecting from them? And with that question, I
- 0:39Speaker 3: am going to Lance, I am just gonna disappear and
- 0:41Speaker 3: I am gonna let you and Trevor urn out for
- 0:43Speaker 3: the next twelve minutes, so you guys have a great time.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I'm gonna go grab a quick snack.
- 0:48Speaker 2: No, we need you here, man.
- 0:49Speaker 4: No, the feeling is not mutual. I love conversing with you.
- 0:52Speaker 5: I think we don't do a lot of the comboing,
- 0:55Speaker 5: analytics and old school together. I feel like sometimes at
- 0:57Speaker 5: our network too, I'm always like, no, don't play with
- 0:58Speaker 5: the analytics guy.
- 0:59Speaker 4: No, fench tray. I want to talk to the old school.
- 1:01Speaker 5: I want to talk to sarge Orgy Friggy Jenkins when
- 1:04Speaker 5: we have him at a Rick Stucklin and stuff.
- 1:05Speaker 4: So this is gonna be a blast.
- 1:07Speaker 5: But I didn't hear what Mooney said, but great reporter,
- 1:09Speaker 5: definitely respect all his perspective. I'm curious to see if
- 1:12Speaker 5: my POV's a little bit different. They have to go
- 1:15Speaker 5: get pitching, it's obvious, but I think to me, the
- 1:17Speaker 5: more interesting question is how, like what kind of pictures
- 1:22Speaker 5: do they value? Because Trevor knows as well, and I'm
- 1:25Speaker 5: curious with both of your thoughts, but what we get
- 1:28Speaker 5: publicly is a lot of like the residual that teams
- 1:31Speaker 5: internally model out. So when they have a picture they like,
- 1:35Speaker 5: it's not just like Jed Horror Carter Hawkins going no,
- 1:37Speaker 5: I like that guy, Let's acquire him. It's more than
- 1:40Speaker 5: looking at models. Those inputs driving their decision making based
- 1:43Speaker 5: on you know, value and such. And I'm getting to
- 1:46Speaker 5: the point where I have this half baked idea that
- 1:48Speaker 5: I wonder if the Cubs just don't like velocity because
- 1:51Speaker 5: I feel like every time they acquire anybody, it's someone
- 1:54Speaker 5: who doesn't throw hard and somebody who cuts the ball,
- 1:57Speaker 5: someone who throws like four or five pitches. They did
- 1:58Speaker 5: this in the draft as well. They value spin, but
- 2:01Speaker 5: it's always like, we're not gonna pay for the guy
- 2:04Speaker 5: throwing ninety five to ninety seven. We'd rather pay for
- 2:06Speaker 5: the guy ninety two to ninety three and a half
- 2:08Speaker 5: with you know, the seven percent barrel rate a little
- 2:11Speaker 5: bit below the average, and we're just gonna roll with
- 2:14Speaker 5: a really good defense and hope that that guy succeeds.
- 2:16Speaker 5: And I feel like, you know, they've run into some
- 2:18Speaker 5: injuries this year which are clouding this perspective slightly, with
- 2:22Speaker 5: Kate Horton going down and Justin Steele being delayed and
- 2:24Speaker 5: some of these other guys. But they acquire Cabrera. You know,
- 2:28Speaker 5: maybe that's the counter to this logic. But David Peterson's
- 2:31Speaker 5: an interesting example. My big question here is just do
- 2:34Speaker 5: they actually go after someone at the deadline who throws
- 2:36Speaker 5: hard or is this more of just like a David
- 2:39Speaker 5: Peterson two point zero where they just acquire another guy
- 2:42Speaker 5: who put the ball on ground. They rely on the
- 2:44Speaker 5: middle of the infield pete and centerfield, and they call
- 2:46Speaker 5: it a day in that perspective. So this is what
- 2:49Speaker 5: I'm talking about, right, This is percent of force even
- 2:52Speaker 5: sinkers thrown above ninety five miles prior this season, they're
- 2:55Speaker 5: dead last. They're the only team in baseball that hasn't
- 2:56Speaker 5: thrown over two thousand fastballs called fastballs moving cutters ninety
- 3:01Speaker 5: five plus. And they've been down there for the last
- 3:04Speaker 5: couple of years and it really hasn't turned. And I
- 3:07Speaker 5: find it fascinating because I just I don't know, like
- 3:10Speaker 5: when you look at the teams that they're gonna have
- 3:12Speaker 5: to spar within the postseason, the Phillies, the Dodgers and
- 3:15Speaker 5: some of these other clubs, they all throw hard, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 5: like the Dodgers are the team in baseball and the
- 3:20Speaker 5: Miners that have like an average fastball of ninety four
- 3:23Speaker 5: point five ish, which is like a full tick above
- 3:26Speaker 5: any other minor league gorg So, Trev, do you think
- 3:29Speaker 5: like they can actually succeed in the postseason not throwing hard?
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's I think the velocity is important.
- 3:36Speaker 1: There's there's a lot to do with that. And and
- 3:38Speaker 1: and uh you.
- 3:40Speaker 6: Mentioned something you said like do they just not want
- 3:41Speaker 6: to pay for people that that the pay the throw hard?
- 3:44Speaker 1: Right, It's it's almost interesting to think, like.
- 3:48Speaker 6: I feel like more there's more guys who throw up
- 3:50Speaker 6: ninety five plus than don't at this point, like guys
- 3:53Speaker 6: like there's a there's so many of them that that
- 3:55Speaker 6: there's so much supply that it feels like it might
- 3:58Speaker 6: be something else. And and I'm trying to like, and
- 4:01Speaker 6: this is what I where my question was going to
- 4:03Speaker 6: go for you. I know, I'm just kind of fire
- 4:04Speaker 6: one right back at you to answer your question real quickly. Now,
- 4:07Speaker 6: I think that you need velocity somewhere. You need you
- 4:10Speaker 6: need at least to have a difference of velocity. You
- 4:12Speaker 6: need at least guys have back in Bullpene guys. And
- 4:14Speaker 6: I know Palencia throws really hard and and and and stuff,
- 4:17Speaker 6: but like you know, you should, you should you need
- 4:19Speaker 6: velocity somewhere.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I think it's always been that way too.
- 4:22Speaker 6: You know, even even back in the day, you still
- 4:24Speaker 6: wanted some guys who could throw harder and some guys
- 4:26Speaker 6: who didn't throw as hard. So it's almost like there's
- 4:29Speaker 6: something else that they value more and that they don't
- 4:32Speaker 6: just they just put it down the priority list.
- 4:35Speaker 1: And and what that is is what's interesting and in
- 4:38Speaker 1: that and.
- 4:39Speaker 6: That side of things, because we know justin Steele, he
- 4:42Speaker 6: throws all his pitches. It's the same grip. He's got
- 4:44Speaker 6: this feel thing going. I would say the same thing
- 4:46Speaker 6: about Boyd. I would say the same thing about a Managa.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Like these guys they're like unique in the way that
- 4:52Speaker 6: they can manipulate a baseball and the way that they pitch,
- 4:55Speaker 6: and the uniqueness might be that, like they're just different
- 4:58Speaker 6: than everybody else. Maybe that's what they're looking for. So
- 5:01Speaker 6: I wanted your take on that, like they do. You
- 5:04Speaker 6: mentioned the draft, and you've been following the draft very closely.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Would that apply to those guys as well in your opinion?
- 5:08Speaker 6: Or are they like guys with just nice arsenals that
- 5:11Speaker 6: you could find anywhere that are risks soaring ninety two
- 5:13Speaker 6: ninety three.
- 5:15Speaker 5: They have the heaviest tendency in the miners to cut
- 5:17Speaker 5: the ball. So if you look at like armside movement
- 5:19Speaker 5: of fastballs and the miners, they're the lowest. So they
- 5:21Speaker 5: they definitely prize like the ability to get on side
- 5:23Speaker 5: of the ball, and as a result of that, you know,
- 5:26Speaker 5: like the mix is just largerly able to seem shift
- 5:29Speaker 5: into more shapes. If you look at the majority of
- 5:31Speaker 5: the guys they took in the draft, almost every single
- 5:33Speaker 5: one of these guys has like a sweeper above eighty
- 5:35Speaker 5: four and it's great shape, and they cut the ball
- 5:37Speaker 5: and it's like a little lower release. So that low
- 5:39Speaker 5: slot soupernator style thing that we hear about a lot,
- 5:43Speaker 5: that was the overarching tendency. Kay townsend their first round
- 5:45Speaker 5: pick slightly different, but again, Sam I d throws like
- 5:48Speaker 5: an eighty five mile prior sweeper. I think almost like
- 5:50Speaker 5: every arm, I want to say, in the first like
- 5:52Speaker 5: eight rounds that they took, they took eleven in their.
- 5:54Speaker 4: First thirteen picks.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I haven't looked through.
- 5:57Speaker 5: I think the back two guys, I'm thinking they're but
- 6:00Speaker 5: the majority of them, everyone I was looking at was
- 6:01Speaker 5: just like, oh yeah, you throw a three thousand r
- 6:03Speaker 5: pm eighty four mile power sweeper as well. So that's
- 6:06Speaker 5: clearly what they value, and I think that's a fair
- 6:08Speaker 5: thing to value. Like they love those shapes, and as
- 6:10Speaker 5: a result of that, you're probably gonna end up with
- 6:12Speaker 5: the guys that throw sinkers, and maybe that backs into
- 6:15Speaker 5: the ball and ground point. But I guess, like I
- 6:17Speaker 5: wonder almost whether the anti velo approach in certain arms,
- 6:21Speaker 5: I agree it's not everyone, right. I wonder if it's
- 6:24Speaker 5: almost more of like a this is getting really narrady,
- 6:26Speaker 5: but like a dollar per war thing, Like you're talking
- 6:28Speaker 5: about the supply of of the guys that throw really hard,
- 6:32Speaker 5: and I agree with that, but I almost wonder whether
- 6:34Speaker 5: you have so many teams constantly vying for all those arms,
- 6:37Speaker 5: whether they're like, we're just gonna go from a dollar
- 6:40Speaker 5: per war standpoint and see that the guy who has
- 6:42Speaker 5: historically had a six and a half bearl rate in
- 6:44Speaker 5: his career, on a dollar per war basis, there is
- 6:46Speaker 5: a better chance of returning a surplus as opposed to
- 6:49Speaker 5: paying for the guy at ninety six. And again, like
- 6:52Speaker 5: I understand the counters here, irare Daniel Plentzi's hurt, Cad
- 6:55Speaker 5: Wharton's hurt. But I think they're trying to thread that needle,
- 6:58Speaker 5: and I'm not entire really sure. I just want to
- 7:01Speaker 5: see them go out, Like, of course i'd love for
- 7:03Speaker 5: them to get school. I like Joe Ryan as a
- 7:05Speaker 5: fit for them as well, but he's another guy doesn't
- 7:08Speaker 5: really throw really hard, but I think he's an exceptional pitcher,
- 7:10Speaker 5: so he'd be an obvious exclusion to this rule if
- 7:12Speaker 5: they go get him. But like Clay Holmes, would be
- 7:15Speaker 5: the obvious name that like fits perfectly with their scheme
- 7:18Speaker 5: right where it's.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Like, oh, yeah, you're ball on ground.
- 7:20Speaker 5: You know, you spin the ball really well, and we're
- 7:22Speaker 5: just gonna rely in the middle of the infield as
- 7:24Speaker 5: opposed to going and getting like an impact arm. I
- 7:27Speaker 5: think Boyd could be a game one or two starter.
- 7:28Speaker 5: He's weird enough. He gets enough z own miss for
- 7:30Speaker 5: that to work. But I worry about them a little
- 7:32Speaker 5: bit in a playoff series where it's like, Okay, you
- 7:34Speaker 5: got Boyd and then it's like, oh, where are we
- 7:36Speaker 5: going now? You know, like showed is good, but huge
- 7:38Speaker 5: home run problem a lot of the time. Maybe if
- 7:40Speaker 5: that game's at Wrigley in the in the team's a
- 7:41Speaker 5: little susceptible to lefties. Yeah, I could see him starting,
- 7:44Speaker 5: look at game two or something, or maybe split it
- 7:46Speaker 5: up the lefties and go one in three. But finding
- 7:48Speaker 5: that number two starter, it's either Edward Cabrera comes back
- 7:50Speaker 5: and is amazing from his injuries, which we really haven't
- 7:53Speaker 5: seen the season, or you go out and get someone
- 7:56Speaker 5: that's actually Stunn and you put him at the top
- 7:57Speaker 5: of the rotation.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 5: I mean, we're always going to push great starters to
- 8:01Speaker 5: teams that need starters. It's just a matter of whether
- 8:04Speaker 5: they pulled the trigger and ten year innniversary of twenty sixteen,
- 8:06Speaker 5: like that team went out and made some moves. I mean,
- 8:08Speaker 5: I hope that the reunion they had recently maybe spurred
- 8:11Speaker 5: some some ideas in Hoyer and carlier Hawkins had to
- 8:15Speaker 5: get them going in a direction that's a little more
- 8:16Speaker 5: aggressive than they've been at prior deadlines.

- 9:20Speaker 3: All right, I just want to make this clear for
- 9:21Speaker 3: all the Cup fans that are watching on Marquee, Lance
- 9:23Speaker 3: says the Cubs are cheap.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Thank you. You guys continue to know.
- 9:26Speaker 3: I stand you said they don't want to get into
- 9:30Speaker 3: barry numbers about velocity, so you said it. Enjoy Marquis.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Thank you. I'm I'm out.
- 9:37Speaker 6: I mean, you don't really we don't need Lance and
- 9:39Speaker 6: tell us that the team will refuses to go one
- 9:42Speaker 6: dollar over the luxury tax every year.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Age like clear, it was just funny.
- 9:48Speaker 3: It was just funny because Lance was like because of
- 9:50Speaker 3: what Lance said, No, Lance, I understand what you talked
- 9:53Speaker 3: to me.
- 9:53Speaker 4: He posted me there, I get it.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Yeah, you got him, you got him. It's so funny.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Now now you got me off my game and I'm like,
- 9:59Speaker 1: what was my I follow up a question.
- 10:02Speaker 6: Uh okay, so talking talking more about like what could
- 10:07Speaker 6: they go get them? So okay, so outside's let's let's
- 10:10Speaker 6: start to maybe think about some of these options outside
- 10:13Speaker 6: of Joe, Ryan and Karry Scoble. Honestly, though, even when
- 10:16Speaker 6: it comes to the dollars and whatever.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Schoogle is just like he's a free agent. You're paying
- 10:21Speaker 1: with ten million dollars.
- 10:22Speaker 6: He's gonna be owed and then you get him for
- 10:23Speaker 6: two months, Like that's what's gonna happen unless you want
- 10:25Speaker 6: to extend him.
- 10:26Speaker 1: But he's gonna be so expended like it's he's.
- 10:28Speaker 6: Gonna think about Yeah, let's go to the market, like
- 10:31Speaker 6: and he's gonna be good every game.
- 10:34Speaker 1: He just is.
- 10:35Speaker 6: You're gonna get a level that he's not gonna go below.
- 10:37Speaker 6: And you can't say that outside of those guys, who
- 10:41Speaker 6: who who do you think is a great fit? And
- 10:43Speaker 6: then who in your in your heart of hearts is
- 10:45Speaker 6: like this, this is a cup, This guy's a cup.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Who's out there available? Who do you think it could be?
- 10:51Speaker 5: You know, I I think pretty much any of the
- 10:54Speaker 5: starters make a lot of sense for them. I'm not
- 10:56Speaker 5: entire I don't have a lean or inside in front,
- 10:59Speaker 5: like what direction they'd be lead. I think that the
- 11:01Speaker 5: name that I found most intriguing is I was looking
- 11:03Speaker 5: through Jeff Passing and Kyle mcdanie put together a great
- 11:05Speaker 5: piece where they ranked all the trade deadline pieces basically
- 11:08Speaker 5: like one through one hundred and kind of rode a
- 11:10Speaker 5: blurbs and match teams and stuff. Clubs are basically mentioned
- 11:12Speaker 5: under every starting pitcher. They weren't mentioned under Mason Miller.
- 11:15Speaker 5: Of course, that'd be a great fit. I like, I
- 11:17Speaker 5: kind of like Josh Hater. Here's a kind of fascinating one.
- 11:19Speaker 5: He had some relationship with Council. I believe he's a
- 11:22Speaker 5: TRED Athletics guy too, And the Cubs have Tyler Zombro,
- 11:24Speaker 5: who used to be one of the bigger guys at
- 11:25Speaker 5: TRED Athletics. From a development standpoint, I wonder if there's
- 11:28Speaker 5: some connection between all those pieces that makes that a
- 11:31Speaker 5: little more of a fit. He's also owed a good
- 11:33Speaker 5: amount of money. I think it's off the time I had.
- 11:35Speaker 5: I want to say it's between sixteen and twenty mil
- 11:36Speaker 5: for the next two years, or at least this year,
- 11:39Speaker 5: and one more correct me on that if I'm wrong.
- 11:41Speaker 5: But he makes a lot of sense to me, just
- 11:43Speaker 5: from the standpoint of every time he's ever been on
- 11:45Speaker 5: the mound. He misses his bats like he does weird
- 11:47Speaker 5: stuff from the left side.
- 11:48Speaker 9: We all know this.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Anytime we see him, it's like, Oh, he's throwing like
- 11:50Speaker 5: this weird riding sinker and I love that, Like, I
- 11:52Speaker 5: think they could use another leverage arm. Jacob Webb's been
- 11:55Speaker 5: great this year. I think that acquisition was awesome. But
- 11:58Speaker 5: I don't know if you go in a play series
- 12:00Speaker 5: and go can't wait for him to be my guy
- 12:02Speaker 5: in the bottom of the ninth, you know, like I'd
- 12:04Speaker 5: love for him to be like the eighth and the
- 12:05Speaker 5: seventh guy. If they get Polencia back like that, If
- 12:07Speaker 5: you can get a bullpen of like Hater Polenci and
- 12:09Speaker 5: Jacob Webb like you're cooking man, Like that's awesome, then
- 12:12Speaker 5: you got to figure out how to bridge to get
- 12:13Speaker 5: to the seven, eight nine. If we could talk about
- 12:15Speaker 5: separately with the starters. But I really like Josh here
- 12:18Speaker 5: is a fit. I just think he's a good pitcher.
- 12:20Speaker 5: There's a relationship between those organizations of Dana Brown and
- 12:23Speaker 5: Jed Hoyer with the car Kyle Tucker trade, you know,
- 12:25Speaker 5: it's pure speculation on mind.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I don't have no idea if the conversations are ongoing
- 12:28Speaker 4: on those guys. But I'm just trying to.
- 12:30Speaker 5: I'm trying to open the third eye a little bit
- 12:32Speaker 5: and find a guy that I think makes sense. And
- 12:34Speaker 5: you know, I don't know is one of the side's
- 12:36Speaker 5: gonna eat money? Do do the Astras eat money to
- 12:38Speaker 5: get better prospects back? And that's where I think the
- 12:40Speaker 5: Cubs are uniquely positioned because they have Jefferson Rojas, who
- 12:44Speaker 5: I believe is like pretty consensuscy in.
- 12:46Speaker 4: That like top fifty area. He can get you a
- 12:49Speaker 4: pretty big piece.
- 12:49Speaker 5: He's completely blocked right now as well, like they tied
- 12:52Speaker 5: up Nico Horner, Dansy Swanson and Alex Braigman. I had
- 12:54Speaker 5: no idea where Jefferson Ross is gonna play. You know,
- 12:57Speaker 5: he looks great. You know, he's kind of moving off
- 12:59Speaker 5: short a little. I think he's filled out body wise.
- 13:01Speaker 5: It started to add power and if you look at him,
- 13:04Speaker 5: like Fangrass does some like surplus value stuff and I'm
- 13:06Speaker 5: putting out a YouTube video on my channel that kind
- 13:08Speaker 5: of goes into it.
- 13:09Speaker 4: But I mean, he from.
- 13:10Speaker 5: A surplus value standpoint would line up in like the
- 13:13Speaker 5: forty to fifty five million dollar area, which is a
- 13:16Speaker 5: lot like that is a massive chip to put down,
- 13:18Speaker 5: And I kind of wonder whether they get to the
- 13:20Speaker 5: deadline and if they want to make a move, why
- 13:22Speaker 5: not take the guy that's blocked and go.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Go get something?
- 13:24Speaker 1: You know.
- 13:25Speaker 5: I don't know if that would swing and end up
- 13:27Speaker 5: getting them put them on the table for like a
- 13:29Speaker 5: school ball, that'd be amazing, you know, But I imagine
- 13:31Speaker 5: the Dodgers are just gonna be like, hey, make sure
- 13:33Speaker 5: we're able to make the last offer because it's going
- 13:35Speaker 5: to be better than anybody else's. But you know, could
- 13:38Speaker 5: that get him a Joe Ryan? Is that a Sanuel
- 13:40Speaker 5: Countra style thing? I like personally Joe Ryan. I think
- 13:44Speaker 5: he'd be a fit on the team. Again, kind of
- 13:46Speaker 5: no idea if like that conversation is ongoing, But if
- 13:48Speaker 5: you're asking me for like the dream package or the
- 13:50Speaker 5: Cubs go after, it'd be Joe Ryan, It'd be Josh
- 13:52Speaker 5: Hater And to be getting rid of some of these
- 13:54Speaker 5: prospects that I think are kind of blocked, Jackson Wiggins,
- 13:57Speaker 5: Jefferson Rojas, maybe some subtle pieces they would a lot
- 14:00Speaker 5: of depth in the Dominican too. Maybe some teams like
- 14:03Speaker 5: you know, cobbling up a Dominican guy way off alongside
- 14:05Speaker 5: an immediate impact type in Jackson Wiggins who's kind of
- 14:08Speaker 5: trending more to me as a reliever, but really fun
- 14:11Speaker 5: fastball there.
- 14:12Speaker 4: So they got chips, man.
- 14:13Speaker 5: I think I was looking at some of these other
- 14:14Speaker 5: teams and I don't know how many of them have
- 14:17Speaker 5: the bargainy chips the Cubs do, Like the Yankees, are
- 14:19Speaker 5: in an interesting spot.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Are they gonna trade Lagron, Hay and Lombard?
- 14:22Speaker 9: No?
- 14:23Speaker 5: Beyond that, you got to convince a team that they love,
- 14:26Speaker 5: like a Ben Hesser, Elm Rodriguez. The Braves have a
- 14:29Speaker 5: ton of pitching depth they I think could be a player,
- 14:31Speaker 5: and the Dodgers as well. But I think the Cubs
- 14:33Speaker 5: are uniquely positioned to go beyond where the Dodgers and
- 14:36Speaker 5: the Yankees are shopping and have pieces to entice a
- 14:39Speaker 5: team to give up an asset that would really help them.
- 14:42Speaker 6: See, this is why we love having you on Lance
- 14:45Speaker 6: because I know that AJ and I AJ probably agrees
- 14:47Speaker 6: with me here.
- 14:48Speaker 1: You could have made like half those names up. We
- 14:50Speaker 1: wouldn't know. You know, you know everything.
- 14:54Speaker 3: God, I think he did, Trevor, I don't any of
- 14:56Speaker 3: those you got me like you.
- 14:59Speaker 6: Just I mean, I'm chasing material old right like I'm like,
- 15:03Speaker 6: there is a lot of names on a list of
- 15:05Speaker 6: keeping I'm glad we have you to keep us updated.
- 15:08Speaker 6: And and someone is tracking as closely what everyone has,
- 15:12Speaker 6: because it does sound like the Cubs have some pieces.
- 15:14Speaker 6: Are like, guys, this makes all the sense in the world.
- 15:16Speaker 6: They're being blocked. Anyways, you have already signed your core.
- 15:20Speaker 6: This is the core that you think you're gonna win with. Yep,
- 15:22Speaker 6: So let's go try to win right now. Okay, so
- 15:25Speaker 6: I'm gonna switch gears. Just we're gonna zoom out a
- 15:28Speaker 6: little bit more or go ahead.
- 15:30Speaker 4: No, I said, let's do it.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that's it.
- 15:33Speaker 6: We're gonna zoom in a little bit, a little bit more.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Let's talk about pitching labs. Aja's favorite thing in the
- 15:37Speaker 6: whole world. Don't worry, AJ, You're coming in to this
- 15:41Speaker 6: conversation in just one moment. Pitching labs and every team
- 15:44Speaker 6: has them. Everyone hears about what a pitching lab is.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Uh.
- 15:47Speaker 6: I also myself am am developing one in a in
- 15:50Speaker 6: a facility here as well. Lots of nerd stuff going on,
- 15:53Speaker 6: But in reality, it's you go there and you get
- 15:55Speaker 6: a bunch of you get a bunch of different ways
- 15:57Speaker 6: look at it, and then you guys try to make
- 15:58Speaker 6: better decisions, make yourself better. It's the same thing was
- 16:00Speaker 6: happening in bullpens. Now there's just cameras around, and but who,
- 16:05Speaker 6: what team, what team is doing.
- 16:07Speaker 1: This the best? Because we just talked about the Cubs.
- 16:08Speaker 6: They have something they specifically look for, and pitching labs
- 16:12Speaker 6: are where a lot of this what they're looking.
- 16:13Speaker 1: For comes from.
- 16:15Speaker 6: And also when they put people in their pitching lab,
- 16:17Speaker 6: they then try to get the most out of what
- 16:19Speaker 6: they're looking for.
- 16:20Speaker 1: So it's it's approaching it from both directions.
- 16:23Speaker 6: As of right this moment, let's just say like from
- 16:25Speaker 6: the beginning of this year maybe to the end, because
- 16:27Speaker 6: it's this stuff is.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Like going all over the place. One's really good at
- 16:30Speaker 1: it one year and the next year that's gone because.
- 16:34Speaker 6: A lot of recency bias. So right now, who do
- 16:36Speaker 6: you think has the best pitching lab right now with
- 16:39Speaker 6: what they're doing is working the best this year in
- 16:42Speaker 6: twenty twenty six, in twenty.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Twenty six with that qualifier, I think it's a debate
- 16:46Speaker 5: between four teams. I think it's the Rays, the Guardians,
- 16:50Speaker 5: the Brewers, and the Yankees. Each of them has done
- 16:53Speaker 5: some really cool stuff with pitchers. I mean, the Brewers
- 16:55Speaker 5: is the obvious one between Yzowski and Arison, and they
- 16:58Speaker 5: have like the Sorcerer magic, where it's like any picture
- 17:02Speaker 5: they pick up, it's like, Oh, of a sudden, he's
- 17:04Speaker 5: like ammdiate better. Like Joe kuhnele throws two miles per
- 17:06Speaker 5: hour harder just because he walked into American Family Field
- 17:09Speaker 5: out there, which is just I don't know if there's
- 17:11Speaker 5: some black magic going on there or what.
- 17:13Speaker 4: The Yankees I think are number one.
- 17:15Speaker 5: And this may be a little controversial, but if you
- 17:17Speaker 5: talk to people in baseball, they're the one team that
- 17:20Speaker 5: I've had multiple people from different organizations that are not
- 17:23Speaker 5: the Yankees tell me that if you were to, like
- 17:25Speaker 5: name a team that's number one with a bullet, it's them.
- 17:28Speaker 5: And I think it's a byproduct of how well they
- 17:31Speaker 5: manage workload. And I know you're gonna be.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Like, oh, they've blown out arms.
- 17:34Speaker 8: It's like I.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Had some director of pitching the other day tell me
- 17:37Speaker 5: every arm is either hurt or about to be hurt,
- 17:40Speaker 5: So it's a little bit hard to like look at
- 17:41Speaker 5: the last two months and be like, well Freed was
- 17:43Speaker 5: on the al It's like, okay, Well, also, how about
- 17:45Speaker 5: Cam Schlitzer adding seven miles per hour, you know, and
- 17:49Speaker 5: still healthy, Like everyone told me he was gonna blow out.
- 17:51Speaker 5: That kid might win the al cy hung right now,
- 17:53Speaker 5: you know. So I think it's personally Yankees, but I
- 17:56Speaker 5: think it's a fourteen debate at this present moment. I
- 17:58Speaker 5: also would throw in the Guardians and the Rays. The
- 18:01Speaker 5: Rays I think are just so sneaky with acquisition and
- 18:05Speaker 5: roster construction and like like pitching staff construction. They're always
- 18:08Speaker 5: a team that's considered a little behind on the biomech side,
- 18:11Speaker 5: and like ken Max and how a body moves and
- 18:13Speaker 5: integrating that back to ball flight. I never hear them
- 18:15Speaker 5: at the top of that list, but they do the
- 18:17Speaker 5: ballflight stuff so well that I think a lot of
- 18:19Speaker 5: people kind of don't blame them for not being great
- 18:22Speaker 5: on the body side. But this year they're throwing like
- 18:24Speaker 5: a bazillion change ups, a lot of right right change
- 18:26Speaker 5: ups too. So to me, this is this is like
- 18:29Speaker 5: clever and fun where it's like, Okay, we can't go
- 18:31Speaker 5: out and pay twenty five million dollars for a pitcher.
- 18:34Speaker 5: So let's go get Nick Martinez and Acchoir Brian Baker.
- 18:37Speaker 4: And throw them. Just throw.
- 18:39Speaker 5: Have these guys throw a pitch that always models out positively,
- 18:42Speaker 5: but the league just never uses. They're up at like
- 18:44Speaker 5: twenty one percent change ups here, right right, change ups.
- 18:47Speaker 5: They're also number one in baseball. I think it's around
- 18:48Speaker 5: like fourteen percent or so. So I love the Guardians.
- 18:52Speaker 5: I think the Brewers are good, and the Yankees are
- 18:53Speaker 5: good and the Rays are good. So like that's my four.
- 18:55Speaker 5: I'm not going to order them, but I would put
- 18:57Speaker 5: the Yankees up top, and I think I might get
- 18:59Speaker 5: some pushback just because the Brew's done so much amazing
- 19:01Speaker 5: stuff this year. But I'm curious what you guys think.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I mean, I I think you're you're, you're. Those top
- 19:07Speaker 1: four are definitely the right top four.
- 19:09Speaker 6: I think that a lot of teams do really, uh
- 19:11Speaker 6: do a really great great job here.
- 19:13Speaker 1: But here's my last question before we let you go,
- 19:15Speaker 1: because we've covered a lot of ground here.
- 19:16Speaker 6: Yeah, and this one's going to both Aja and you
- 19:18Speaker 6: because I think this is a really interesting thought experiment.
- 19:22Speaker 6: Uh just got done talking with our friend, you know,
- 19:25Speaker 6: Sarah's about usage and how a bunch of players are
- 19:28Speaker 6: just like just change usage of a bunch of bitches,
- 19:31Speaker 6: like over the last month. And this is pretty common
- 19:33Speaker 6: going into the break, like they see something like I'm
- 19:36Speaker 6: gonna I'm gonna lean into throwing this pitch, and a
- 19:38Speaker 6: lot of it's is pitching lab information. They like have
- 19:40Speaker 6: stuff they can act on. So my question is, uh,
- 19:45Speaker 6: let's assume that that you let Prime Greg Maddix go
- 19:49Speaker 6: and just throw in one just He's not trying to fix,
- 19:51Speaker 6: change or do anything. He just wants to understand, uh
- 19:54Speaker 6: like have more uh points to like if something changes,
- 19:59Speaker 6: he knows immediately opposed to like having to feel it
- 20:01Speaker 6: and get results to tell him. Right, say, Greg Maddox,
- 20:04Speaker 6: who is the professor, like he's named the professor, gets
- 20:08Speaker 6: this information and gets to go out.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Do you think that.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Greg Maddox would have made his adjustments through a start
- 20:16Speaker 6: pitch to pitch faster had he had access to being
- 20:21Speaker 6: in a pitching.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Lab that is both to Lance and AJ.
- 20:24Speaker 6: Do you think that Greg Maddox if he pitched now
- 20:27Speaker 6: and had just get to do it one time and
- 20:28Speaker 6: got to get that information that he would just be like, oh,
- 20:31Speaker 6: like I can, I can make these adjustments even.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Faster me or AJ first, go ahead, A J first,
- 20:38Speaker 1: I want to hear AJ.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I think he was just fine. I loved hitting off
- 20:42Speaker 2: Greg Maddicks.
- 20:42Speaker 3: So I think whatever Greg Maddox did, he should have
- 20:44Speaker 3: stuck with exactly what he did. Don't chanse the thing. Greg,
- 20:47Speaker 3: I love you, I loved titting off of you, and
- 20:49Speaker 3: I love hanging.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Out with so great.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Maybe, I mean, of course he would have done it
- 20:52Speaker 3: faster because he would add more information. So yes, but
- 20:55Speaker 3: you know what the best part about Greg Maddox was
- 20:57Speaker 3: he'd go like this and go I'd be like, oh,
- 20:59Speaker 3: here comes the RX bok, so get ready for the
- 21:01Speaker 3: change it.
- 21:02Speaker 2: That was my That was my key to hitting Greg Maddix.
- 21:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I agree with it. I mean I
- 21:07Speaker 5: think I think every picture would have been better. I
- 21:10Speaker 5: was asked the other day like like we had we
- 21:11Speaker 5: were talking to Rick Sutcliffe here and uh, and he
- 21:14Speaker 5: was like, I would have of course, I would have
- 21:16Speaker 5: been better, you know. And it's like it's like if
- 21:18Speaker 5: you have more information, like of course, you know, Like
- 21:21Speaker 5: I'm sure there were things even Greg Maddox maybe was like,
- 21:23Speaker 5: oh I wish I knew this or that, you know,
- 21:25Speaker 5: and if there's any data that could have progressed him,
- 21:28Speaker 5: then absolutely. I think it's a no brainer that a
- 21:30Speaker 5: lot of these guys. I think the interest the more
- 21:32Speaker 5: interesting question to me, if you cause I think if
- 21:34Speaker 5: you take any picture from the past and bring them in,
- 21:36Speaker 5: any great picture from the past, bring them into the
- 21:38Speaker 5: modern era, they would be successful. My larger question is
- 21:41Speaker 5: how many of those guys would have to add velocity
- 21:44Speaker 5: to be good because we've seen forcing fastball villa just skyrocket,
- 21:48Speaker 5: you know, like who's the guy from then? They could
- 21:51Speaker 5: have stayed at the villa they threw and if you
- 21:53Speaker 5: brought them into twenty twenty six, they'd still be successful.
- 21:55Speaker 5: I think the majority, vast majority would have to add villo.
- 21:59Speaker 5: But I feel like Greg Maddox might be the unicorn
- 22:01Speaker 5: where he could have just pitched, like you you time travel,
- 22:05Speaker 5: take him and put him in a game tonight, like
- 22:08Speaker 5: who has the best line? I think Greg Maddox will
- 22:10Speaker 5: be up there. It's it's just that's kind of how
- 22:12Speaker 5: I think of that question.
- 22:13Speaker 1: If that makes sense, that's fascinating.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I thinking about which guys would have had who
- 22:18Speaker 6: would have probably added velocity, like uh, I know Pedro
- 22:21Speaker 6: couldet ninety eight, he would have been thrown in seven
- 22:23Speaker 6: ninety eight all the time.
- 22:24Speaker 1: He would have been thrown it the whole time.
- 22:26Speaker 6: And that's also like, if this were the way he
- 22:28Speaker 6: if this were what valued so as much when he played,
- 22:31Speaker 6: he would have done it, and he would have done it.
- 22:33Speaker 6: He would have been just as he would have been
- 22:34Speaker 6: Pedro still like, I'm I'm I'm of the same I'm
- 22:37Speaker 6: of the same line.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I think that's absolutely true.
- 22:39Speaker 6: These guys would have adapted the same way, and it
- 22:41Speaker 6: would have been pretty interesting to see.
- 22:44Speaker 2: All right, well, thank you Lance.
- 22:46Speaker 3: It's good to see Jake Bowers has become the player
- 22:48Speaker 3: he thought he would be four years ago. So thanks,
- 22:50Speaker 3: I can't believe he didn't. Okay, well that's that's usually
- 22:56Speaker 3: what they said. But thanks Lance. And whether you're building
- 22:59Speaker 3: a program developing.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Players are just guess.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Tired of guessing, go to rapsodo dot com and learn
- 23:03Speaker 3: more data wins rap sodo helps you use it.
- 23:06Speaker 10: We'll be right back. I get to it, I get
- 23:09Speaker 10: to injury. I feel like aj right now, I do
- 23:11Speaker 10: like I'm not as good looking but here with Trevor McGill,
- 23:15Speaker 10: closer extraordinaire, just elitist pitcher for the second half Brewers,
- 23:21Speaker 10: the league leading Brewers.
- 23:25Speaker 4: You guys have the most wins.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Did you realize that?
- 23:27Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean a couple of days ago, right, that happened.
- 23:29Speaker 9: It happened, They happened.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Does it matter?
- 23:33Speaker 9: Not really?
- 23:33Speaker 11: I mean, we we did it last year and you
- 23:36Speaker 11: know it fell a little bit short. So I you know,
- 23:37Speaker 11: I think the team's got our sites, you know, said
- 23:40Speaker 11: a little different this year, a little more experience.
- 23:42Speaker 10: Is there something different though that you talk about or
- 23:44Speaker 10: is it just well, well we have more experience, and
- 23:46Speaker 10: so when we go in and have a three game
- 23:49Speaker 10: series against the you know so and so, or have
- 23:51Speaker 10: a five game series, this is how we have to
- 23:54Speaker 10: attack it.
- 23:54Speaker 4: I mean, not for your bullpeng guys, but yeah, the offense.
- 23:57Speaker 9: I mean, I imagine.
- 23:58Speaker 11: So it's just you get to a point in the
- 24:00Speaker 11: playoffs where you know, you run into guys that are
- 24:02Speaker 11: you know, paid the amount of money they are to
- 24:04Speaker 11: pitch that way in the playoffs, and uh, you know
- 24:07Speaker 11: it's rant into three guys during that series.
- 24:10Speaker 9: So I mean.
- 24:11Speaker 10: Tip the cap to them, you know, I'm sure down
- 24:15Speaker 10: there in the dugout they got a lot of different
- 24:16Speaker 10: things they you know, they're going to do this yere,
- 24:18Speaker 10: but uh, you know, we're just in the bullpen and
- 24:20Speaker 10: join the vibes until it's time to you know, bitch,
- 24:23Speaker 10: So you just kind of handle our little r little
- 24:26Speaker 10: thing over there.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Hey, what's up, big dog?
- 24:29Speaker 2: Question for you?
- 24:31Speaker 8: Fifteen straight appearances without giving up a run. My question
- 24:34Speaker 8: to you is, because you know people out there, the
- 24:37Speaker 8: normal people are going to be like, is that on
- 24:39Speaker 8: your mind? Like how do you go in day in
- 24:40Speaker 8: and day out when you go in there, like it's
- 24:43Speaker 8: got to be in the back of your mind knowing
- 24:44Speaker 8: like I got to get this guy out. Man, I'm
- 24:46Speaker 8: trying to get this going. I think that's pretty cool.
- 24:48Speaker 8: You you've been doing fantastic.
- 24:50Speaker 9: Yeah, well we gave it one yesterday, so we're that's why. Yees. Yeah,
- 24:54Speaker 9: we're right. It was okay time. Yeah, we're right back.
- 24:56Speaker 9: We're right back to zero.
- 24:57Speaker 11: But uh, you know, like I mentioned on the network
- 25:00Speaker 11: the other day, is you know, we're kind of climbing
- 25:02Speaker 11: down from Evis Everest a little bit there at the
- 25:04Speaker 11: beginning of the season. So kind of when you got
- 25:07Speaker 11: an inflated the ra like that just zero's are your
- 25:09Speaker 11: friend and uh, you know, you got to get in
- 25:12Speaker 11: the good graces of your manager after kind of bought
- 25:15Speaker 11: a few there, so we just kind of kept our
- 25:17Speaker 11: head down and just kept grinding and the guys setting
- 25:21Speaker 11: up everything after we got back in that closer role.
- 25:24Speaker 9: Just been fantastic and have been putting.
- 25:25Speaker 11: Me in positions to, you know, go out and get
- 25:27Speaker 11: says and help the help the team the way I can.
- 25:31Speaker 10: Is that tough when you I know, as a hitter,
- 25:33Speaker 10: if I look up at the I'm looking at the
- 25:34Speaker 10: scoreboard right now. The thing it's bigger every year. I
- 25:36Speaker 10: haven't been back here for eight years. But you look
- 25:39Speaker 10: at your status and you're like, ah, man, I'm hitting
- 25:41Speaker 10: like one fifty. I needed to go higher. Yeah, do
- 25:44Speaker 10: you look because you're running in your angle, you never
- 25:47Speaker 10: see your numbers. I mean actually, I mean right here
- 25:49Speaker 10: on the banner. So like if you peak your you
- 25:52Speaker 10: peak your veilo, you might catch a glimpse through your
- 25:55Speaker 10: ra A. I try not to do that.
- 25:57Speaker 4: What do you look at more?
- 25:58Speaker 9: I'm always staring at the field up.
- 26:01Speaker 11: They did have some metrics now up on the top
- 26:03Speaker 11: right screen by right field, so I'm able to kind
- 26:06Speaker 11: of catch a glimpse of what the heater Kurr balls
- 26:08Speaker 11: at for the day.
- 26:09Speaker 9: But yeah, I just try.
- 26:11Speaker 11: Just try to throw it in a good spot and
- 26:13Speaker 11: you know, let my defense work. Those dudes have been
- 26:16Speaker 11: killing for me this year, especially the last couple of outings.
- 26:20Speaker 11: Not many punch he's a lot of great plays. So uh,
- 26:23Speaker 11: it's it's always, you know, always the guy's behind me
- 26:26Speaker 11: helped me out them, you know, more than I'm probably
- 26:28Speaker 11: helping myself out.
- 26:29Speaker 9: So yeah, for sure.
- 26:33Speaker 8: I want to I want to talk about one of
- 26:34Speaker 8: your teammates, Jacob Mezarouski. I mean, this guy has been
- 26:37Speaker 8: absolutely dynamite. I know you're out in the outfield, you
- 26:40Speaker 8: can't see it. I know you've seen him throw before.
- 26:43Speaker 8: Just talk a little bit about how how good this
- 26:45Speaker 8: guy is, you know, can you explain to the viewer,
- 26:48Speaker 8: like exactly how far he gets that arm down there,
- 26:51Speaker 8: how lanky he is and just throwing over one hundred
- 26:53Speaker 8: and three hundred and four miles an hour, How incredible
- 26:56Speaker 8: that is.
- 26:56Speaker 10: Watching to play catch right now and I'm going to
- 26:59Speaker 10: hit it, like, can you explain what he was just doing?
- 27:01Speaker 10: Because he's playing catch? Out there right now when you
- 27:04Speaker 10: answer toimes question, but you can't explain what.
- 27:06Speaker 4: He was just doing there.
- 27:07Speaker 9: I mean, he's just getting some work in.
- 27:10Speaker 4: You know, he's throwing the ground balls.
- 27:12Speaker 11: Well, yeah, he's young, he's you know, he needs to
- 27:16Speaker 11: work a little bit. So that's kind of Charlie Green's
- 27:19Speaker 11: department to make sure everybody on the PfP side of
- 27:21Speaker 11: things is on the It's not though.
- 27:26Speaker 9: Charlie is a big part of our culture here.
- 27:27Speaker 11: You know, he drills it in from you know, the
- 27:29Speaker 11: beginning levels of our organization.
- 27:31Speaker 9: And when they get up here, things are expected.
- 27:33Speaker 11: But with Miserowski, I mean last year, still throwing hard,
- 27:39Speaker 11: you know, a little bit more sporadic with the fastball
- 27:42Speaker 11: and kind of where he is in the zone. And
- 27:44Speaker 11: you know, he made that one big adjustment of kind
- 27:46Speaker 11: of leaning over into his uh, into his setup a
- 27:50Speaker 11: little bit more, and you know, I think that's kind
- 27:52Speaker 11: of helped him be a little more consistent. And uh
- 27:55Speaker 11: now you're just kind of seeing him blow up the
- 27:57Speaker 11: zone with heaters and uh when William or Gary you know,
- 28:01Speaker 11: kind of senses it's time to throw a curveball, he
- 28:04Speaker 11: drops out on him and usually it works.
- 28:07Speaker 4: Do you see it when you're when this game starts
- 28:10Speaker 4: with him, do you see it?
- 28:11Speaker 10: And like WHOA, Like I can tell these guys are
- 28:14Speaker 10: not on it or can you see it? Like, oh,
- 28:17Speaker 10: you know what this might be? Somebody might need to
- 28:19Speaker 10: be ready in the in the fifth.
- 28:21Speaker 4: I get it. This year he's been eleague, but you
- 28:23Speaker 4: know you can sense that well.
- 28:25Speaker 11: I mean we've had a nice little couple of months
- 28:27Speaker 11: run where you know, it's Misraowski day. We're pretty much
- 28:30Speaker 11: kick our feet up till the seventh. So right now
- 28:34Speaker 11: the team's you know, got them on a little bit
- 28:36Speaker 11: shorter of a plan just to kind of give him
- 28:38Speaker 11: a cool down before you know, September rolls around. But
- 28:42Speaker 11: you know, it's just the work that he's put in
- 28:45Speaker 11: and just kind of the commitment to what he's doing
- 28:47Speaker 11: is very impressive.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Doesn't that cook you guys? I mean, knowing that he's
- 28:51Speaker 4: only going to go four like no, no, it's all right.
- 28:54Speaker 9: I mean it's just one day.
- 28:54Speaker 11: I mean he's picked us up for seventies multiple times
- 28:58Speaker 11: in a row, and you know, you post up like
- 28:59Speaker 11: that and you know team gives you orders to go
- 29:02Speaker 11: out and pitch seventy five for the day. Yeah, it's
- 29:04Speaker 11: all right. We're all here to pick each other up.
- 29:06Speaker 11: And and you know he's he's done it plenty.
- 29:09Speaker 10: For us this year or so, right, you know what
- 29:11Speaker 10: had Arnold looks like? Yeah, do you avoid him when
- 29:15Speaker 10: you see him in the hall out? Now, I know Matt,
- 29:17Speaker 10: he's like very cordial. He's an awesome dude. But do
- 29:21Speaker 10: you see him because it's a trade deadline?
- 29:23Speaker 11: Do you see him and go No, he's uh, that's
- 29:27Speaker 11: that's a one one GM president. So you know it's
- 29:30Speaker 11: there's not anybody that I've really comeing across yet. It's
- 29:34Speaker 11: like truly like him. Uh, always in the clubhouse, you know,
- 29:38Speaker 11: always seems like he's doing some kind of like team
- 29:39Speaker 11: building exercise with you know, his office for the coaching staff. Uh,
- 29:45Speaker 11: pickleballs are many things, you know, always playing pickle ball
- 29:47Speaker 11: at the staff.
- 29:48Speaker 9: So he loves it.
- 29:50Speaker 11: But no, he's not a guy that you know you
- 29:53Speaker 11: see walking down the hallway and you're like a ship,
- 29:56Speaker 11: we gotta you know, duck out of this Guy's what it's.
- 29:58Speaker 11: You know, he's such a good guy. You're on help
- 30:00Speaker 11: me run into him just to say hello. And you know,
- 30:03Speaker 11: as long as you enough fire and you're sending you
- 30:06Speaker 11: it's okay. You know, we joke around too, even during
- 30:09Speaker 11: our little downstrend there in you know, late April, middle
- 30:12Speaker 11: of April. You know, it's still cordial and you know
- 30:16Speaker 11: has faith in me, and you know it's just bumps
- 30:19Speaker 11: in the road.
- 30:19Speaker 9: You know, he understands that kind of stuff.
- 30:21Speaker 10: So that helps when your boss has faith a lot.
- 30:24Speaker 10: So yeah, it's just he's the one, one guy. It's
- 30:27Speaker 10: nothing like I've ever seen before.
- 30:33Speaker 7: If you're watching us, you already know we're wearing mack
- 30:35Speaker 7: Weldon right now as we talk about a great brand
- 30:38Speaker 7: that makes things so comfortable and easy to wear. But
- 30:41Speaker 7: if you're listening to the show, let me tell you
- 30:43Speaker 7: a little bit more about mac Weldon with my friend
- 30:45Speaker 7: Eric Kratz.
- 30:47Speaker 12: Yeah, it's comfortable, it's light. It's summertime right now. For
- 30:51Speaker 12: me though, they cater to what I need tall clothes. Normally,
- 30:56Speaker 12: when I buy tall clothes, it's like something that's cumbersome
- 30:59Speaker 12: and it still fits incredibly well, super light, perfect for
- 31:05Speaker 12: the summertime. They got me all covered.
- 31:08Speaker 7: Comfortable performance material can be yours. Mack Weldon is the spot.
- 31:15Speaker 7: Don't sweat the heat this summer feel as effortlessly cool
- 31:18Speaker 7: as you look with Mack Weldon. Go to Mackweldon dot
- 31:20Speaker 7: com and get twenty percent off your first order of
- 31:22Speaker 7: one hundred and twenty five bucks or more with promo
- 31:24Speaker 7: code foul. That's m A c K W E L
- 31:26Speaker 7: d O N dot com code f o U L crazy.
- 31:31Speaker 8: I want to ask about the challenge pictures. I just
- 31:33Speaker 8: found out about this that you guys as hitters have
- 31:37Speaker 8: just challenged two point eight percent of the pitches this
- 31:40Speaker 8: season that are challengeable.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Is there is there a reasoning for that? Is there?
- 31:44Speaker 8: Are you trying to save it in the later innings?
- 31:46Speaker 8: Do you know much about that? Are you just worried
- 31:48Speaker 8: about pitching?
- 31:48Speaker 9: Hire low low Low Gary?
- 31:53Speaker 11: Ease up a lot of those things. Man, He's usually
- 31:55Speaker 11: right too, El Gary, El Gary just challenging.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Just does know.
- 32:00Speaker 9: I likes challenging more than cracking, man.
- 32:02Speaker 11: But he's been on it this year, and you know,
- 32:04Speaker 11: I just flipped a lot of counts for himself and
- 32:06Speaker 11: for our pictures.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Just just check.
- 32:09Speaker 10: I mean, but do you sit out there and you go,
- 32:11Speaker 10: I'm one hundred percent following what El Gary or wild
- 32:16Speaker 10: Bill says, Oh, we're.
- 32:17Speaker 11: Not challenging his pictures nobody. No, it's we had a
- 32:20Speaker 11: challenger in the air and the phone got picked up.
- 32:22Speaker 11: Not to do that, you know, coming from Murphy.
- 32:24Speaker 1: So.
- 32:26Speaker 9: Me and William.
- 32:27Speaker 11: You know, if I we kind of have the relationship
- 32:29Speaker 11: to where if I throw a heater or curveball down,
- 32:31Speaker 11: you know, I'll probably I'll give him like a nod
- 32:33Speaker 11: real quick, like I want that, and it's up to
- 32:35Speaker 11: him to do it or not.
- 32:37Speaker 4: That's quick. That's a quick because he can't delay.
- 32:40Speaker 11: No, well, I mean he got three seconds, which is
- 32:42Speaker 11: honestly a lot more time than you think out there.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Does he give you this?
- 32:47Speaker 9: Nah?
- 32:47Speaker 11: I really, I mean I usually know if it's a ball,
- 32:51Speaker 11: but if it's a close one, I think we had
- 32:53Speaker 11: one who gets Miami. You know, I nodded my head
- 32:56Speaker 11: real quick out low heater and immediately hit the challenge
- 33:00Speaker 11: button and we want it. So that was that was
- 33:04Speaker 11: pretty cool. That's awesome.
- 33:06Speaker 10: I mean, do you do you feel like your pitches
- 33:11Speaker 10: change where people view them? You know what I mean,
- 33:14Speaker 10: Like you know where the strike zone is, but while
- 33:18Speaker 10: Bill's pulling it up, do you feel like yours planes
- 33:21Speaker 10: out more?
- 33:22Speaker 4: Somebody with the sinker?
- 33:23Speaker 9: Does that?
- 33:24Speaker 10: Do you feel like it changes, like like umpires routinely
- 33:27Speaker 10: missed a certain spot for you, and so you're like.
- 33:31Speaker 11: I feel like because you got so much carry on
- 33:33Speaker 11: all the ball sometimes and just kind of my height
- 33:36Speaker 11: in which I throw the ball to, I feel like
- 33:40Speaker 11: that down the down heater, the down curveball, especially if
- 33:43Speaker 11: it's a little bigger that day, Like, those are the
- 33:46Speaker 11: two that get missed the most. But you know that's
- 33:48Speaker 11: that's what we got challenged just before. Now, right, so
- 33:51Speaker 11: we get for sure.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Right, Trevor, does Murphy have a nickname for you?
- 33:58Speaker 11: I mean it was calling me Lance for a while while,
- 34:00Speaker 11: but uh, now we got I don't have no idea, man,
- 34:04Speaker 11: now we got Now he got mccoller. So I haven't
- 34:07Speaker 11: heard that one, but Charlie.
- 34:10Speaker 10: Charlie called me gorilla a few years ago and that's
- 34:12Speaker 10: kind of been the one since.
- 34:14Speaker 2: So but nothing from Murph.
- 34:17Speaker 9: I don't know he's Gorilla. I don't know.
- 34:19Speaker 2: It just stuck gorilla, don't you all know what the mcguilla?
- 34:23Speaker 2: Gorilla was a.
- 34:27Speaker 9: Little younger.
- 34:28Speaker 3: By the way, do you guys make fun of Murph
- 34:31Speaker 3: for his hip problem that he had when he had
- 34:32Speaker 3: that machine. He was wheeling that machine around with him everywhere.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Please tell me y'all wore him out about that.
- 34:38Speaker 10: So Wade Wade Bottom the wheelchairs what two three years
- 34:43Speaker 10: ago and Wade Miley was talking about he got it
- 34:47Speaker 10: like he used it for a couple of days, you know,
- 34:49Speaker 10: just to go along with a joke. And it's been
- 34:50Speaker 10: in the closet since. You know.
- 34:52Speaker 11: I kind of wish he would be on that thing
- 34:54Speaker 11: a little bit more, just save himself. But uh yeah,
- 34:57Speaker 11: I mean I give him a hard time every once.
- 34:59Speaker 9: In a while. He's the boss, though, so you got
- 35:01Speaker 9: to kind of keep it light, do you.
- 35:03Speaker 10: I mean, they build a platform for him, do you
- 35:06Speaker 10: worry about Murph? They build a platform in the dugout.
- 35:11Speaker 10: If you guys haven't seen it, like you got to
- 35:13Speaker 10: look it up. They build a platform right at the
- 35:14Speaker 10: end of the dugout towards home plate with a big,
- 35:17Speaker 10: high padded chair, not a regular padded chair, like a
- 35:20Speaker 10: high padded chair.
- 35:22Speaker 2: I think we.
- 35:22Speaker 11: Lost that first game he sat in there. He went
- 35:24Speaker 11: right back to his cave, went right back to his But.
- 35:27Speaker 4: He looks like he's in pain, Like you can't have
- 35:29Speaker 4: your manager in pain.
- 35:30Speaker 10: So but if he's up there, he's getting picked off
- 35:34Speaker 10: by some you.
- 35:35Speaker 11: Know, and someone gets deeper and you know it's it's over.
- 35:40Speaker 11: But I don't know, man, he's I think he kind
- 35:43Speaker 11: of sets the tone on, you know, expectations with what
- 35:46Speaker 11: he's going through a little bit.
- 35:47Speaker 9: You know, he's out there.
- 35:48Speaker 11: He don't want to, you know, be taken off the fielder,
- 35:50Speaker 11: be taken away from the action. And you know, there
- 35:53Speaker 11: could be a lot said for that as well. You know,
- 35:55Speaker 11: he could just taken a three week hiatus, but he
- 35:58Speaker 11: chose not to. And you know, I got a lot
- 36:00Speaker 11: of respect for that.
- 36:03Speaker 2: He did.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Though he didn't he have something done at the All
- 36:05Speaker 3: Star break? Didn't he take the All Star.
- 36:06Speaker 9: Break off or the Little starbreak, got his.
- 36:09Speaker 4: Hip worked on or whatever he had gone?
- 36:11Speaker 11: He took one day off. I think like his nerve,
- 36:14Speaker 11: his nerve block wore off and that he took that
- 36:17Speaker 11: rest of that day off. It was right back in
- 36:18Speaker 11: there the following day. So he's got a high pain threshold.
- 36:23Speaker 11: I'll tell you that is.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Go ahead, aj go ahead, go ahead, go ahead.
- 36:28Speaker 10: I was just gonna say, what is the if you
- 36:30Speaker 10: were to put one thing on it, because we're talking
- 36:32Speaker 10: about you said about murph like culture. I tried to
- 36:36Speaker 10: explain the culture of the Brewers organization. What you know,
- 36:39Speaker 10: what goes on here, what I saw on eighteen, what
- 36:41Speaker 10: I know from the people that still work here. If
- 36:44Speaker 10: you were to say the one culture thing that you
- 36:47Speaker 10: see as a team, what do you think is the
- 36:50Speaker 10: best thing that you're like, this is what keeps the
- 36:54Speaker 10: boys together?
- 36:56Speaker 9: Just the effort, I think.
- 36:58Speaker 11: You know, there's very very few times where you know,
- 37:02Speaker 11: balls hit that ain't like one ten to the second
- 37:05Speaker 11: basement where they're like jogging the first Like that's a
- 37:09Speaker 11: great example of the outfielders always busting the ass on balls.
- 37:14Speaker 11: Just I think that kind of I would just always
- 37:17Speaker 11: joke with Merphs. It's like that collegiate mindset he has
- 37:20Speaker 11: is kind of contagious up here because you get away
- 37:23Speaker 11: from it a little bit. You know, you kind of
- 37:25Speaker 11: depend on the long ball, and you know, certain aspects
- 37:28Speaker 11: of the game like that and all the hustle plays
- 37:31Speaker 11: and kind of get lost throughout the league. And I
- 37:33Speaker 11: feel like over the last decade or so, and I
- 37:36Speaker 11: think that's kind of what he brought back to baseball,
- 37:38Speaker 11: was like the bunting and the small ball in the
- 37:40Speaker 11: hustle and just like the underlying grit and a player,
- 37:45Speaker 11: So that's I think this is the main thing.
- 37:49Speaker 4: But he'll also call you out for it.
- 37:51Speaker 10: No, because there was plays the other day where you
- 37:53Speaker 10: saw him he was pissed off it at Durang he did,
- 37:56Speaker 10: you know, he misread the hop and it got past him.
- 37:59Speaker 10: We've seen we've seen different pictures get called out. Yeah,
- 38:02Speaker 10: is that necessary because if you have the expectation but
- 38:05Speaker 10: never the call out, I think that it's very necessary.
- 38:11Speaker 9: And he's a guy that.
- 38:14Speaker 11: You know, if if it's warranted and it's you know,
- 38:17Speaker 11: an obvious mistake, like yeah, you kind of deserve to
- 38:19Speaker 11: get aired out a little bit. That's just it's we're
- 38:21Speaker 11: not really here for feelings. We're here to win some
- 38:24Speaker 11: ball games. And I feel like guys just don't take
- 38:28Speaker 11: it too personally. And a lot of people here, you know,
- 38:30Speaker 11: take that challenge and take it the right way. So,
- 38:34Speaker 11: I mean, I've been called out before plenty of other
- 38:38Speaker 11: people and that Doug I have been called out before
- 38:40Speaker 11: as well. But at the same time, like you know,
- 38:43Speaker 11: he's doing it because he's got expectations, you know, and
- 38:47Speaker 11: he wants you to be your best self, you know,
- 38:50Speaker 11: just just a little push.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Trevor can ask me win twenty games this year and
- 38:56Speaker 3: you guys call him the vulture.
- 38:57Speaker 4: He wants funny.
- 38:58Speaker 1: I mean.
- 39:00Speaker 11: Twelve still he's at twelve, still playing magic left in
- 39:05Speaker 11: the season.
- 39:06Speaker 2: I thought he got to thirteen. Did he not know
- 39:08Speaker 2: he's still twelve. He's stuck on twelve.
- 39:10Speaker 11: He's at twelve. But yeah, there's there's some magic left.
- 39:12Speaker 11: We'll see if he can get a few.
- 39:14Speaker 9: And flipping, do you.
- 39:15Speaker 4: Guys get him a hard time in the bullpen for
- 39:17Speaker 4: what AJ said?
- 39:18Speaker 9: He's earned.
- 39:20Speaker 4: He's coming.
- 39:22Speaker 11: He's coming to a lot of down one games or
- 39:24Speaker 11: tiede games and you know, pitch two innings and this
- 39:27Speaker 11: is especially early in the season. He racked up a
- 39:29Speaker 11: lot of those earlier where he was throwing two three
- 39:31Speaker 11: innings and uh, you know, I'd say, I say a
- 39:34Speaker 11: lot of those are are are earned, and maybe two
- 39:38Speaker 11: or three have been the Vulture. But now he deserves
- 39:41Speaker 11: every bed of that man. He's just a great leader
- 39:43Speaker 11: in the clubhouse. And you like to see cool ship
- 39:45Speaker 11: like that happen for good guys.
- 39:47Speaker 10: Right, do you let absolutely when the boys do well,
- 39:49Speaker 10: you're like, yeah, I want that? Is there somebody's like
- 39:52Speaker 10: roll in the bullpen that you're just sittingenamored by because
- 39:55Speaker 10: Aaron's way different than you. Throwing from the left side.
- 39:59Speaker 10: He's got you know, he's not gonna go just an inning.
- 40:03Speaker 10: Is there somebody in the bullpen that you're like, Man,
- 40:05Speaker 10: I wish I had.
- 40:06Speaker 9: That, sir, and you got the rubber arm you could
- 40:09Speaker 9: just throw up, dude.
- 40:09Speaker 10: I mean, he'll throw two three innings one day and
- 40:12Speaker 10: like that would be up.
- 40:13Speaker 9: The next day. I mean, he's he's just a dog
- 40:16Speaker 9: like that.
- 40:16Speaker 4: You watch him throwing, your arm gets sore.
- 40:19Speaker 11: I mean I try to keep I try my best
- 40:21Speaker 11: to keep it fifteen pitches, but uh you know that's
- 40:24Speaker 11: what we got full terrence for. Okay, But yeah, i'd
- 40:28Speaker 11: probably say Aaron man, the way he spends that baseball
- 40:30Speaker 11: and like his sinker, like it's just everything he throws.
- 40:34Speaker 11: His plus plus I always called it too sixteen because
- 40:36Speaker 11: that's a stuff plus score on a slider.
- 40:38Speaker 9: Things gross, Come.
- 40:41Speaker 10: On, you actually know what his stuff plus score is.
- 40:45Speaker 10: So what's your stuff plus score on your It's like
- 40:48Speaker 10: one thirty nine or so one thirty five, one thirty
- 40:50Speaker 10: one for you on like.
- 40:52Speaker 9: My best best day. But uh no, it's like slider.
- 40:55Speaker 10: It grated out like a two thirteen or A two
