- 0:11Hello, friends. Sean here.
- 0:14Just Sean, I'm afraid. Yes, we are back to normal.
- 0:17It's Monday, it is the 14th of July.
- 0:20And many of you have been very kind and you've said boy,
- 0:23Yvonne, you're our favourite Connery.
- 0:25So I'm terribly sorry you're stuck with me.
- 0:28We are getting back to a single person at the microphone after
- 0:31that beautiful period of poetry from Solomon, a bit of love.
- 0:38And now that that is wrapped up, we are heading back into the
- 0:41book of Deuteronomy. We are getting back to Moses,
- 0:44exploring what it looks like to follow that covenant, those 10
- 0:48commandments that God gave his people as they head into the
- 0:52Promised land. And we're going to be doing this
- 0:54for the next 4 weeks before we dive into the birth of the
- 0:57church, reading through Acts. But that is then, we are
- 1:02continuing now to read through instructions about the 5th
- 1:05commandment, honour your father and mother.
- 1:07And this is not just about honouring parents, but this is
- 1:10about God setting up what it looks like to have human
- 1:13authority in a society that lives under the rule of a loving
- 1:17God. So today and tomorrow, Moses
- 1:20will be setting up, through God's wisdom, what it looks like
- 1:24for the authority to sit with certain people in that society.
- 1:28You're ready. Let us dive in and hear about
- 1:31God structuring His people to live according to His ways as we
- 1:36read together Deuteronomy chapter 17.
- 1:48Never sacrifice sick or defective cattle, sheep, or
- 1:53goats to the Lord your God, for he detests such gifts.
- 1:57When you begin to live in the towns the Lord your God is
- 2:00giving you, A man or woman among you might do evil in the sight
- 2:04of the Lord your God and violate the covenant.
- 2:07For instance, they might serve other gods, or worship the sun,
- 2:11the moon, or any of the stars, the forces of heaven, which I
- 2:14have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it,
- 2:18investigate the matter thoroughly.
- 2:20If it is true that this detestable thing has been done
- 2:23in Israel, then the man or woman who has committed such an evil
- 2:27act must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death.
- 2:33But never put a person to death on the testimony of only one
- 2:36witness. There must always be two or
- 2:38three witnesses. The witnesses must throw the
- 2:41first stones, and then all the people may join in.
- 2:45In this way you will purge the evil from among you.
- 2:49Suppose a case arises in a local court that is too hard for you
- 2:53to decide, for instance, whether someone is guilty of murder or
- 2:57only of manslaughter, or a difficult lawsuit, or a case
- 3:01involving different kinds of assault.
- 3:04Take such legal cases to the place the Lord your God will
- 3:07choose and present them to the Levitical priests or the judge
- 3:11on duty. At that time.
- 3:13They will hear the case and declare the verdict.
- 3:16You must carry out the verdict they announce and the sentence
- 3:19they prescribe at the place the Lord chooses.
- 3:23You must do exactly what they say.
- 3:25After they have interpreted the law and declared their verdict,
- 3:29the sentence they impose must be fully executed.
- 3:32Do not modify it in any way. Anyone arrogant enough to reject
- 3:37the verdict of the judge or the priest who presents the Lord
- 3:40your God must die. In this way you will purge the
- 3:44evil from Israel. Then everyone else will hear
- 3:47about it and be afraid to act so arrogantly.
- 3:53You are about to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you
- 3:57when you take it over and settle there.
- 3:59You may think we should select a king to rule over us like the
- 4:03other nations around us. If this happens, be sure to
- 4:07select as King the man the Lord your God chooses.
- 4:11You must appoint A fellow Israelite.
- 4:13He may not be a foreigner. The king must not build up a
- 4:18large stable of horses for himself or send his people to
- 4:21Egypt to buy horses, for the Lord has told you you must never
- 4:26return to Egypt. The king must not take many
- 4:30wives for himself, because they will turn his heart away from
- 4:33the Lord, and he must not accumulate large amounts of
- 4:37wealth in silver and gold for himself.
- 4:40When he sits on the throne as king.
- 4:43He must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll
- 4:48in the presence of the Levitical priests.
- 4:50He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as
- 4:55long as he lives that way. He will learn to fear the Lord
- 4:59his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and
- 5:03decrees. This regular reading will
- 5:06prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his
- 5:11fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from
- 5:14turning away from these commands in the smallest way.
- 5:18And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for
- 5:22many generations in Israel. Our Lord, you know so well that
- 5:36the world around us distract us from your ways.
- 5:40And here you remind the King that if they are to rule, they
- 5:45are to remind themselves daily by reading these decrees that
- 5:50they are to remain humble in service of their people and not
- 5:54of their own wealth and accumulation.
- 5:58My boy, that is good advice for us today.
- 6:01Thank You that we are able to come to You each day, that we
- 6:06are able to hear Your word and have that become part of the
- 6:10rhythm of our lives, continuing daily to draw our minds and our
- 6:14hearts back to You so that it's your priorities that can shape
- 6:19us, shape our approach to the world, shape our lives, and
- 6:24shape the way we spend them with each other.
- 6:27Our Lord, you know best for us. You have a plan which is good
- 6:32for us and good for your Kingdom.
- 6:35I pray that you just continue to gently, and sometimes not so
- 6:39gently, guide us back to your ways so that we can truly be a
- 6:44part of your Kingdom here on earth.
- 6:47We love you. We thank you for your Kingdom,
- 6:50your goodness, and your love for us.
- 6:52And we pray all of this in the loving name of Jesus, Amen.
