Latest / Foul Territory / Heath Bell talks Padres + Aroldis Chapman’s incredible discovery
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Half corner.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Let's sizzle eraldis Chapman has been historically great and he's
- 0:08Speaker 2: unstoppable right now. Fifty consecutive batters retired. As Bob Nightingale
- 0:16Speaker 2: pointed out, that's the equivalent of nearly two perfect games
- 0:19Speaker 2: worth of action. Seventeen consecutive appearances without allowing a hit.
- 0:25Speaker 2: That is the second longest streak in baseball since nineteen
- 0:28Speaker 2: oh one. Yeah, he had a four strikeout game in
- 0:32Speaker 2: that pickup win for the Red Sox. They needed it too,
- 0:35Speaker 2: they'd been slumping a bit since Roman Anthony went down
- 0:38Speaker 2: and to add icing to the cake here, Aj. This
- 0:41Speaker 2: is something that was requested from quite a few FT fans.
- 0:44Speaker 2: They said, you guys got to talk about this spring
- 0:47Speaker 2: training story that Buster only brought up, and we just
- 0:49Speaker 2: asked Carlos Snarbiaz about it and he confirmed it.
- 0:52Speaker 1: You know, Connor Wong is using.
- 0:55Speaker 2: PitchCom calls for an inside fastball, and then Chapman afterward
- 0:59Speaker 2: talks to Want and to your boy Jason bar Attack
- 1:01Speaker 2: and he's like, I feel like I should kind of
- 1:05Speaker 2: aim my fastball and not just throw it over the plate,
- 1:08Speaker 2: like kind of spot it and see what happens. For
- 1:11Speaker 2: the first time ever, and they were like, okay, and
- 1:14Speaker 2: look at him.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Now, don in a great year. Here's what I don't
- 1:17Speaker 3: understand this fifty consecutive batters. Is that before the drop
- 1:21Speaker 3: third strike? Because that batter wasn't retired, So does that count?
- 1:24Speaker 3: I was I had this question. No one seemed to
- 1:26Speaker 3: know the answer to that, because it's fifty consecutive without
- 1:31Speaker 3: a hit. It wasn't a perfect game because he knows,
- 1:34Speaker 3: as the oldest chairman has retired fifty consecutive batters. But
- 1:37Speaker 3: the guy got on first. He didn't retire him. Yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 3: he struck him out, but he still didn't retire him. No,
- 1:43Speaker 3: I I don't know, because if that happens in a
- 1:45Speaker 3: perfect game, it's not considered a perfect game. Someone reached base, right,
- 1:48Speaker 3: you see Do you see where I question whether this
- 1:51Speaker 3: is right or not? Again, it's still an unbelievable run.
- 1:54Speaker 3: He's on, He's on the heater of all heaters. But
- 1:57Speaker 3: I don't know. That's kind of just the thought. But anyways, Yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 3: he's been really good this year. He's been throwing strikes,
- 2:03Speaker 3: he's moving the ball around, he's using all the quadrants.
- 2:05Speaker 3: A slider has split of bents for strikes. That's why
- 2:07Speaker 3: the Red Sox signed. And I think the Red Sox
- 2:10Speaker 3: did a good job because they probably got him for cheap.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Hmm, not worded properly. Probably.
- 2:15Speaker 2: My guess is I'm trying to do quick homework right now.
- 2:19Speaker 2: But fifty batter space without allowing a hit would make
- 2:23Speaker 2: more sense.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Then, Yes, that's what I think. Because he walked because
- 2:26Speaker 3: he has a walk in there, but to hit on
- 2:30Speaker 3: to hit on that, and for last night, you know,
- 2:32Speaker 3: the wild pitch was you know, would have broken up
- 2:36Speaker 3: a perfect game also, but to hit on that, Like,
- 2:39Speaker 3: he's never been a guy that's walked a ton of
- 2:41Speaker 3: batters when he's going well, he's never walked a ton
- 2:44Speaker 3: of batters, but he's never been a four quadrant guy.
- 2:47Speaker 3: He was always you're going in, you're going in, and
- 2:51Speaker 3: make sure you get in to right he's there and
- 2:53Speaker 3: that ball cut in or you're going away, which we
- 2:55Speaker 3: rarely did. It was you know, that ball would run
- 2:59Speaker 3: away from a or go into a lefty and it
- 3:02Speaker 3: would kind of pour in on their hands. But he
- 3:04Speaker 3: could control the lanes pretty well. You didn't see a
- 3:06Speaker 3: lot of misfires, even though Andrew McCutcheon would disagree when
- 3:11Speaker 3: he was throwing at his head some of the times
- 3:12Speaker 3: early in his career. But I think Chappie, it's just
- 3:16Speaker 3: cool to hear that he's now thrown to all four
- 3:18Speaker 3: quadrants like he's a left handed thumber coming out of
- 3:21Speaker 3: the pen.
- 3:23Speaker 1: He has unlocked another level at his age. It's amazing.
- 3:27Speaker 2: So perhaps, Sir Raldus Chapman, I mean, he's been the
- 3:30Speaker 2: best reliever in baseball this year.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Right, best reliever in baseball? Yeah, we saw that one coming.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah, brilliant signing by Craig Breslow and the Boston Red Sox.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Red Sox picked up that big win on Sunday, but yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 2: stumbled a little bit before that against Arizona to create
- 3:47Speaker 2: a little bit more separation here with Blue Jay's Yankees
- 3:50Speaker 2: Red Sox right now in the division, all in a
- 3:52Speaker 2: playoff spot.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Hey, we've got.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Former closer and Friar Territory hosts Keith Bell joining us
- 3:59Speaker 2: right now.
- 3:59Speaker 1: He great, have you on, man, Good to see you.
- 4:01Speaker 4: How you been pretty good? Thanks for having me?
- 4:05Speaker 2: All right, so let's get right into the San Diego Padres,
- 4:08Speaker 2: basically a five hundred team since they dominated the trade deadline.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So can you summarize what you've been saying on Friar territory.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I'm sure it has not been smooth.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Well, they were really hot after the trade deadline. They
- 4:24Speaker 5: got all they like, filled up all their pieces to
- 4:26Speaker 5: the puzzle they needed. And then the last two weeks
- 4:29Speaker 5: they decided to play football instead of baseball.
- 4:34Speaker 4: You know, they just couldn't put anything together.
- 4:37Speaker 5: But the last two days they've kind of done really well,
- 4:40Speaker 5: and I feel like it's only time until they get
- 4:44Speaker 5: on a streak and start all you know, fire and
- 4:48Speaker 5: all cylinders. Where the pitching staff's been good all year
- 4:51Speaker 5: except for the past maybe two weeks, and the hitting
- 4:54Speaker 5: has been on and off, but they're starting to.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Swing the bat a little bit.
- 4:58Speaker 5: So they just need to go out there and play
- 5:00Speaker 5: good fundamental baseball and you know, it'll take care of itself.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Ftfam, let's talk about fair Harbor.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And if you're listening, I hope that you watch this
- 5:10Speaker 2: conversation at some point because we're doing show and Telcrats
- 5:14Speaker 2: shorts they can be used as a bathing suit, and
- 5:19Speaker 2: the liner, which we call butter, is the game breaker.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It's the playmaker because it's different.
- 5:27Speaker 3: You have worn shorts that are not like this, and
- 5:30Speaker 3: the liner sucks. They are buttery on your butt.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I just came up with something for them. Your liner sucks.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Get Fair Harbor Liner, seriously give it a shot. I'm
- 5:43Speaker 2: not just saying this. The butter analogy plays and ftfam.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You know we're hooking you up. Fairharbor Clothing dot Com
- 5:51Speaker 2: slash val twenty percent off when you use the code
- 5:54Speaker 2: foul on your first purchase. Once again, that's fair hrbo
- 5:59Speaker 2: r clothing dot com backslash foul for twenty percent off
- 6:02Speaker 2: your first purchase and use promo code foul.
- 6:06Speaker 3: We talk a lot about teams that hit home runs
- 6:08Speaker 3: being streaky. This isn't a team that hits a lot
- 6:11Speaker 3: of home runs and they don't strike out. How do
- 6:15Speaker 3: they become a streaky team then, because it feels like
- 6:18Speaker 3: that's almost like, hey, if you're not going to hit
- 6:20Speaker 3: a lot of home runs, because you don't want to
- 6:22Speaker 3: be a streaky team, you got to be consistent. Where
- 6:25Speaker 3: are they just not you know? How does it become
- 6:29Speaker 3: a streaky team because they're not waiting for the dinger?
- 6:33Speaker 5: Well, I think this is one of those teams like
- 6:35Speaker 5: Tatis really hasn't hit a bunch of home runs. Man
- 6:38Speaker 5: Child has hit a few, but they haven't. They have
- 6:41Speaker 5: potential to hit a lot of home runs, but they're
- 6:43Speaker 5: not doing that. They're hitting line drives or you know,
- 6:46Speaker 5: ball on the ground. They're not hitting balls to the
- 6:48Speaker 5: wall where they have potential of going and hitting a
- 6:52Speaker 5: bunch of home runs. So that's just kind of where
- 6:54Speaker 5: I feel like they're gonna get hot and all of
- 6:58Speaker 5: a sudden, the power is going to show up. I mean,
- 7:00Speaker 5: last couple of years you heard about you know, Slam
- 7:02Speaker 5: Diego and all that.
- 7:03Speaker 4: So it's it's just about amounted time.
- 7:06Speaker 5: It's a matter of time before you know, the power
- 7:09Speaker 5: shows up, and and I feel like that's where the
- 7:11Speaker 5: streak's gonna show up.
- 7:13Speaker 3: All right, since the trade deadline, they hit this little swoon.
- 7:16Speaker 3: They were hot right after the trade deadline. It looked
- 7:19Speaker 3: like they were going to be like the world beaters.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Well you go back to when they traded for Juan
- 7:26Speaker 3: Soto and they made this world beating trade. Something didn't click.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Is this the same or is this different? I know,
- 7:35Speaker 3: is one guy this time they traded for essentially half
- 7:39Speaker 3: a new team, But is is this the same type
- 7:44Speaker 3: of thing where they brought in so much popularity, so
- 7:48Speaker 3: much skill, that like it doesn't they can't figure out
- 7:51Speaker 3: how to play it together, or is it just a
- 7:54Speaker 3: just a small blip in the radar.
- 7:57Speaker 5: I think it's a small blip in the raidar. I mean,
- 7:59Speaker 5: last time you brought a really big name in. This time,
- 8:01Speaker 5: you brought a bunch of you know, good above average
- 8:05Speaker 5: major league ballplayers, but not a huge star name whatnot.
- 8:08Speaker 5: And I think the only thing that's kind of happened
- 8:11Speaker 5: was the last ten days or two weeks. You know,
- 8:14Speaker 5: you're playing teams that are pretty much out of it,
- 8:17Speaker 5: and you're thinking, oh, we're going to run them over,
- 8:20Speaker 5: we're gonna beat them. And you know, this team's looking
- 8:23Speaker 5: for next season and getting ready for next season, and
- 8:26Speaker 5: the only thing they're doing is trying to knock people
- 8:28Speaker 5: out of the playoffs. And I think we just took
- 8:31Speaker 5: you know, Baltimore a little too lightly, Colorado a little bit,
- 8:34Speaker 5: and some other teams just too lightly. We're Minnesota where
- 8:37Speaker 5: it's like, yeah, we're gonna beat these teams, but all
- 8:41Speaker 5: of a sudden, you know, those teams are like firing
- 8:43Speaker 5: all cylinders, playing one hundred and twenty percent, where I
- 8:46Speaker 5: think we were just kind of coasting saying that we're
- 8:49Speaker 5: gonna win, and it just didn't go in our favor,
- 8:52Speaker 5: and I think the teams realized that they need to
- 8:55Speaker 5: go one hundred twenty percent just like the other teams
- 8:58Speaker 5: that are out of it, and you know, hopefully they
- 9:01Speaker 5: come on the top.
- 9:05Speaker 3: He what all this talk about, you know, the swoon
- 9:09Speaker 3: and all this, But they're one game behind the Dodgers.
- 9:11Speaker 3: It's not like they're fifty games out. They're one game back.
- 9:14Speaker 3: They're one three game winning streak from being in first place.
- 9:17Speaker 3: So yeah, I get it. A lot of injuries at
- 9:20Speaker 3: them going down, Boger going down, a lot of these guys.
- 9:22Speaker 3: But at the same time, they're only one game out.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Shouldn't be shouldn't you guys be thinking positive, we're gonna
- 9:27Speaker 3: win the division.
- 9:29Speaker 4: I believe they're gonna win the division.
- 9:31Speaker 5: A lot of people are saying that, you know, hey,
- 9:33Speaker 5: just getting into the playoffs. I feel like the streak's
- 9:36Speaker 5: gonna happen. They've been winning series just you know, the
- 9:39Speaker 5: last ten days they were you know, well, besides the
- 9:41Speaker 5: last two Colorado they were two and eight, so what
- 9:44Speaker 5: are there four? And you know, just they haven't been
- 9:48Speaker 5: playing well lately in the last two weeks.
- 9:51Speaker 4: And but you know, they.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Kind of been winning the series here and there, and
- 9:54Speaker 5: as we know baseball players, you just want to win
- 9:57Speaker 5: the series.
- 9:58Speaker 4: If you just win the series, it'll take care of
- 9:59Speaker 4: it itself.
- 10:00Speaker 5: And I feel like they're going to win the division
- 10:03Speaker 5: because the Dodgers are kind of falling apart a little bit.
- 10:06Speaker 5: But the Padres just need to kind of put it
- 10:08Speaker 5: together and make sure the pitching's there and the pitchings
- 10:10Speaker 5: goes five six innings. The bullpen is stellar, and the
- 10:14Speaker 5: offense just you know, you know, keep getting on base.
- 10:17Speaker 5: And I really believe the power is going to show up.
- 10:19Speaker 5: And that's where the streaks, you know, the streaky teams
- 10:22Speaker 5: or whatnot, is. They haven't really showed a bunch of power.
- 10:25Speaker 5: They hit occasionally home runs here and there, but they
- 10:28Speaker 5: haven't really hit the power like they have in the past.
- 10:30Speaker 5: And that's why they're only one game back, and you know,
- 10:33Speaker 5: their schedule is easier teams. The teams are out of
- 10:37Speaker 5: the playoffs, but like I said, you can't take them lightly.
- 10:41Speaker 5: You got to play one hundred and ten percent so
- 10:43Speaker 5: you can beat those teams that you should beat. And
- 10:46Speaker 5: that's where they're out there this rest of the season.
- 10:50Speaker 6: We spend a lot of time on the road.
- 10:51Speaker 2: We are often concerned about our online security when you're
- 10:55Speaker 2: logging in from all over the globe.

- 11:47Speaker 6: This has been your tech update. Keep your data safe peace.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Just before I ask my question, nobody can play one
- 11:53Speaker 3: hundred and ten percent. You can only play one hundred percent.
- 11:56Speaker 3: That's it. You can't play more than you can't play
- 11:58Speaker 3: more than a hundred percent. I don't know, you get
- 12:01Speaker 3: like even with steroids, you can only play one hundred
- 12:03Speaker 3: percent with just the steroids. But my question is somebody
- 12:08Speaker 3: needs to play one hundred ten percent. Is a starting
- 12:10Speaker 3: rotation Nester Cortez goes onto il. Does the starting rotation
- 12:16Speaker 3: truly matter with the bullpen even without Jason Adam once
- 12:21Speaker 3: they get to the playoffs.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I really think the starting rotation sets the tone
- 12:27Speaker 5: of the game. If you give up a run in
- 12:29Speaker 5: the first inning or the second inning, the hitters are
- 12:32Speaker 5: almost like, oh my gosh, we got to make a
- 12:34Speaker 5: comeback or whatnot, where it kind of sets the tone
- 12:37Speaker 5: to the game where if you get you know, the
- 12:39Speaker 5: first inning, you go one two three, second inning one
- 12:41Speaker 5: two three, kind of sets the tone that, hey, we're here,
- 12:45Speaker 5: We're gonna you know, shut the other offense down, shut
- 12:48Speaker 5: the team down, even if they go five innings and
- 12:51Speaker 5: then the bullpen can take over. But it's just that
- 12:54Speaker 5: set that, you know, set the tone of the game
- 12:57Speaker 5: that the Padres are here to win the game and
- 12:59Speaker 5: they they're just not waiting on their offense to carry
- 13:01Speaker 5: them all right.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Heath let's finish with your banana ball experience.
- 13:09Speaker 1: We saw you coming in hot over the weekend. Had
- 13:12Speaker 1: it go.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Yeah, had a really good time in Peco Park. Played
- 13:16Speaker 5: for the Bananas of my first time. I played against
- 13:19Speaker 5: them a couple of times. It was really exciting, it
- 13:22Speaker 5: was fun. The ground screw told me not to slide
- 13:25Speaker 5: on the grass, so I slid at second base and
- 13:27Speaker 5: then went out and finished out an inning. And then
- 13:30Speaker 5: the next day Trevor Hoffmin got to close the game out.
- 13:33Speaker 5: So I think San Diego got the two best closers
- 13:36Speaker 5: out there this weekend. And you know, the Bananas won
- 13:40Speaker 5: both games, so I think it's a win win, and
- 13:43Speaker 5: you know, there's no better feeling going out there, and
- 13:45Speaker 5: you know, doing the little shimmy on the mound, and
- 13:49Speaker 5: you know i'd probably get you know, hit back in
- 13:52Speaker 5: the day or you know, fined if I did that.
- 13:57Speaker 1: AJ, what'd you think of his performance?
- 13:59Speaker 2: I mean, AJ was there a couple of weeks ago
- 14:01Speaker 2: for a little point of reference and he gave us
- 14:03Speaker 2: a little primer on it.
- 14:05Speaker 3: No, he did great. I mean seeing Trevor come out
- 14:08Speaker 3: one more time and San Diego had to be unbelievable.
- 14:11Speaker 3: I mean, I just want to know who was more tired.
- 14:12Speaker 3: You were him because he had to run all the
- 14:14Speaker 3: way from the bullpen. You just sprinted from the dugout Trevor.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Listen.
- 14:18Speaker 3: I love Trevor, and I know Trevor's in great shape,
- 14:20Speaker 3: but by the time he got all over the mound,
- 14:22Speaker 3: he looked like he was taking his time.
- 14:25Speaker 4: I think Trevor was really nervous.
- 14:27Speaker 5: I didn't see him after the game, so I didn't
- 14:29Speaker 5: know if he was outing and puffin.
- 14:31Speaker 4: We'll just say me.
- 14:32Speaker 5: But he had a long run and he kind of
- 14:35Speaker 5: walked and then realized, hey, I got a jog out there.
- 14:37Speaker 5: And I talked him before the game. He was excited
- 14:41Speaker 5: and nervous, like what do I do? What if I
- 14:44Speaker 5: can't get it there? And I was like, well throw
- 14:46Speaker 5: from the grass. They don't care. So we had a
- 14:49Speaker 5: really good time. It was an awesome experience, and we
- 14:52Speaker 5: wish them nothing but the best.
- 14:55Speaker 3: All right, So AJ got in that bat. We have
- 14:58Speaker 3: to have a matchup, and it's only hypothet because you
- 15:01Speaker 3: guys are one playing out. But if a veteran like
- 15:05Speaker 3: you has to face AJ, who gets the better?
- 15:09Speaker 6: Who gets the better?
- 15:11Speaker 3: Like if it goes old timers game pitcher versus hitter.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Who has the advantage because I know you ain't long
- 15:17Speaker 3: tossing for a long time. You're not getting them pitches
- 15:19Speaker 3: out there, and he's not hitting very much.
- 15:23Speaker 5: You know what, Hitting is probably hard. So I'm gonna
- 15:25Speaker 5: say a little bit, I got the advantage. But honestly,
- 15:27Speaker 5: I'm gonna probably say, hey, where do you want it?
- 15:30Speaker 4: Try to hit it out, Let's go. He'll be cool, exciting.
- 15:33Speaker 5: It'll be cool and exciting if I can, you know,
- 15:35Speaker 5: groove one in there for him and he can hit
- 15:37Speaker 5: it out and then maybe I'll pick him up and
- 15:39Speaker 5: carry him around the field or something like that.
- 15:43Speaker 3: I mean I would hit it. I would hit it.
- 15:44Speaker 3: I don't know if it would go very far, but
- 15:46Speaker 3: i'd hit it. If you threw it, I don't know
- 15:47Speaker 3: where it would go, but I promise you there's one thing.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Pitching is a little different than hitting. Like, if you
- 15:52Speaker 3: could hit, you can always I feel like you can
- 15:53Speaker 3: always hit as long as you can still see. But pitching,
- 15:56Speaker 3: you know, you got you guys got the arm thing
- 15:58Speaker 3: you got to get through. So pitching, pitching to me,
- 16:01Speaker 3: is much harder than just stepping up there to have
- 16:02Speaker 3: to hit the ball.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Well, it has a little bit more arc now before
- 16:07Speaker 5: you know, before it was kind of straight. Now it's
- 16:09Speaker 5: kind of you know, an art ship. So you know,
- 16:13Speaker 5: I think we can always.
