- 0:00Speaker 1: Section seventeen of the Book of Enoch, translated by Robert
- 0:05Speaker 1: Henry Charles. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Fragment of the Book of Noah, Chapters one hundred and
- 0:13Speaker 1: six and one hundred and seven. Chapter one hundred and six.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And after some days, my son Methuselah took a wife
- 0:21Speaker 1: for his son, Lemech, and she became pregnant by him
- 0:24Speaker 1: and bore a son. And his body was white as snow,
- 0:27Speaker 1: and red as the blooming of a rose, and the
- 0:30Speaker 1: hair of his head and his long locks were white
- 0:32Speaker 1: as wool, and his eyes beautiful. And when he opened
- 0:36Speaker 1: his eyes, he lighted up the whole house like the sun,
- 0:39Speaker 1: and the whole house was very bright. And thereupon he
- 0:43Speaker 1: arose in the hands of the midwife, opened his mouth
- 0:47Speaker 1: and conversed with the Lord of Righteousness. And his father
- 0:50Speaker 1: Lamech was afraid of him, and fled and came to
- 0:53Speaker 1: his father Methuselah, and he sat unto him. I have
- 0:56Speaker 1: begotten a strange son, diverse from and un like man,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and resembling the sons of the God of Heaven. And
- 1:04Speaker 1: his nature is different, and he is not like us,
- 1:07Speaker 1: and his eyes are as the rays of the sun.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And his countenance is glorious. And it seems to me
- 1:13Speaker 1: that he has not sprung from me, but from the angels.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And I fear that in his days a wonder may
- 1:18Speaker 1: be wrought on the earth. And now, my father, I
- 1:21Speaker 1: am here to petition thee and implore THEE that thou
- 1:24Speaker 1: mayest go to Enoch, our father, and learn from him
- 1:26Speaker 1: the truth, for his dwelling places amongst the angels. And
- 1:30Speaker 1: when Methuselah heard the words of his son, he came
- 1:34Speaker 1: to me to the ends of the earth, for he
- 1:36Speaker 1: had heard that I was there. And he cried aloud,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and I heard his voice, and I came to him,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and I said, unto him, behold here am I, my son.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Wherefore hast thou come to me? And he answered and said,
- 1:48Speaker 1: because of a great cause of anxiety have I come
- 1:51Speaker 1: to thee, And because of a disturbing vision have I approached?
- 1:55Speaker 1: And now my father hear me, unto lmech my son.
- 1:58Speaker 1: There hath been born us son, the like of whom
- 2:01Speaker 1: there is none. And his nature is not like man's nature.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And the color of his body is whiter than snow
- 2:09Speaker 1: and redder than the bloom of a rose, and the
- 2:12Speaker 1: hair of his head is whiter than white bull, and
- 2:15Speaker 1: his eyes are like the rays of the sun. And
- 2:17Speaker 1: he opened his eyes, and thereupon lighted up the whole house.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And he arose in the hands of the midwife, and
- 2:24Speaker 1: opened his mouth and blessed the Lord of Heaven. And
- 2:27Speaker 1: his father Lamech became afraid and fled to me, and
- 2:31Speaker 1: did not believe that he was sprung from him, but
- 2:33Speaker 1: that he was in the likeness of the angels of heaven.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And behold, I have come to thee that thou mayst
- 2:39Speaker 1: make known to me the truth. And I Enoch answered
- 2:43Speaker 1: and said unto him, the Lord will do a new
- 2:45Speaker 1: thing on the earth. And this I have already seen
- 2:48Speaker 1: in a vision. And make known to THEE that in
- 2:51Speaker 1: the generation of my father Jared, some of the angels
- 2:54Speaker 1: of Heaven transgressed the word of the Lord. And behold,
- 2:58Speaker 1: they commit sin and transgres the law, and have united
- 3:01Speaker 1: themselves with women, and commit sin with them, and have
- 3:04Speaker 1: married some of them, and have begot children by them.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And they shall produce on the earth giants, not according
- 3:12Speaker 1: to the spirit, but according to the flesh. And there
- 3:15Speaker 1: shall be a great punishment on the earth, and the
- 3:18Speaker 1: earth shall be cleansed from all impurity. Yea, there shall
- 3:21Speaker 1: come a great destruction over the whole earth, and there
- 3:24Speaker 1: shall be a deluge and a great destruction for one year.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And this son, who has been born unto you, shall
- 3:31Speaker 1: be left on the earth, and his three children shall
- 3:34Speaker 1: be saved with him. When all mankind that are on
- 3:37Speaker 1: the earth shall die, he and his sons shall be saved.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And now make known to thy son, Lamech, that he
- 3:45Speaker 1: who has been born is in truth his son, and
- 3:48Speaker 1: call his name Noah, for he shall be left to you,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and he and his sons shall be saved from the
- 3:54Speaker 1: destruction which shall come upon the earth on account of
- 3:57Speaker 1: all the sin and all the unrighteousness which shall be
- 3:59Speaker 1: consumate on the earth in his days. And after that
- 4:03Speaker 1: there shall be still more unrighteousness than that which was
- 4:06Speaker 1: first consummated on the earth. For I know the mysteries
- 4:09Speaker 1: of the Holy Ones, for he the Lord has showed
- 4:12Speaker 1: me and informed me, and I have read them in
- 4:15Speaker 1: the Heavenly Tablets Chapter one hundred and seven. And I
- 4:19Speaker 1: saw written on them that generation upon generation shall transgress
- 4:24Speaker 1: till a generation of righteousness arises, and transgression is destroyed,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and sin passes away from the earth, and all manner
- 4:32Speaker 1: of good comes upon it. And now my son go
- 4:35Speaker 1: and make known to thy son, Lamech, that this son
- 4:38Speaker 1: which has been born is in truth his son, and
- 4:42Speaker 1: that this is no lie. And when Methuselah had heard
- 4:45Speaker 1: the words of his father Enoch, for he had shown
- 4:48Speaker 1: to him everything in secret, he returned and showed them
- 4:52Speaker 1: to him, and called the name of that son Noah,
- 4:55Speaker 1: for he will comfort the earth after all the destruction.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Chapter one hundred an appendix to the Book of Enoch.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Chapter one hundred and eight, another book which Enoch wrote
- 5:07Speaker 1: for his son Methuselah. And for those who will come
- 5:09Speaker 1: after him and keep the law in the last days.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Ye who have done good, shall wait for those days
- 5:16Speaker 1: till an end is made of those who work evil,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and an end of the might of the transgressors. And wait, ye, indeed,
- 5:23Speaker 1: till sin has passed away. For their names shall be
- 5:27Speaker 1: blotted out of the Book of Life and out of
- 5:29Speaker 1: the holy books, and their seed shall be destroyed forever,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and their spirits shall be slain. And they shall cry
- 5:36Speaker 1: and make lamentation in a place that is a chaotic wilderness,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and in the fire shall they burn, for there is
- 5:43Speaker 1: no earth there. And I saw there something like an
- 5:46Speaker 1: invisible cloud, for by reason of its depth, I could
- 5:49Speaker 1: not look over. And I saw a flame of fire
- 5:52Speaker 1: blazing brightly, and things like shining mountains circling and sweeping
- 5:57Speaker 1: to and fro. And I ask one of the holy
- 5:59Speaker 1: ais angels who was with me, and said, unto him,
- 6:02Speaker 1: what is this shining thing? For it is not a heaven,
- 6:05Speaker 1: but only the flame of a blazing fire, and the
- 6:07Speaker 1: voice of weeping and crying in lamentation and strong pain.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And he said, unto me, this place which thou seest,
- 6:15Speaker 1: here are cast the spirits of sinners and blasphemers, and
- 6:19Speaker 1: of those who work wickedness, and of those who pervert
- 6:22Speaker 1: everything that the Lord hath spoken through the mouth of
- 6:25Speaker 1: the prophets, even the things that shall be, for some
- 6:28Speaker 1: of them are written and inscribed above in the heaven,
- 6:31Speaker 1: in order that the angels may read them and know
- 6:34Speaker 1: that which shall befall the sinners, and the spirits of
- 6:37Speaker 1: the humble, and of those who have afflicted their bodies
- 6:40Speaker 1: and been recompensed by God, and of those who have
- 6:43Speaker 1: been put to shame by wicked men who loved God
- 6:47Speaker 1: and loved neither gold nor silver, nor any of the
- 6:50Speaker 1: good things which are in the world, but gave over
- 6:52Speaker 1: their bodies to torture, who since they came into being,
- 6:55Speaker 1: longed not after earthly food, but regarded everything as a
- 6:59Speaker 1: past breath, and lived accordingly. And the Lord tried them much,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and their spirits were found pure, so that they should
- 7:06Speaker 1: bless His name. And all the blessings destined for them
- 7:10Speaker 1: I have recounted in the books. And he hath assigned
- 7:13Speaker 1: them their recompense, because they have been found to be
- 7:16Speaker 1: such as loved heaven more than their life in the world.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And though they were trodden under foot of wicked men,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and experienced abuse and reviling from them, and were put
- 7:26Speaker 1: to shame, yet they blessed me. And now I will
- 7:29Speaker 1: summon the spirits of the good who belong to the
- 7:32Speaker 1: generation of light. And I will transform those who were
- 7:35Speaker 1: born in darkness, who in the flesh were not recompensed
- 7:38Speaker 1: with such honor as their faithfulness deserved. And I will
- 7:42Speaker 1: bring forth in shining light those who have loved my
- 7:45Speaker 1: holy name, and I will seat each on the throne
- 7:48Speaker 1: of his honor, and they shall be resplendent for times
- 7:51Speaker 1: without number. For righteousness is the judgment of God. For
- 7:55Speaker 1: to the faithful he will give faithfulness in the habitation
- 7:59Speaker 1: of upright path. And they shall see those who were
- 8:02Speaker 1: born into darkness led into darkness. While the righteous shall
- 8:05Speaker 1: be resplendent, and the sinners shall cry aloud and see
- 8:09Speaker 1: them resplendent. And they indeed will go where days and
- 8:12Speaker 1: seasons are prescribed for them. And of Section seventeen read
