- 0:00Speaker 1: Godzilla, Godzilla. It's one more thing.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I'm strong and geddy, one more thing.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Would that counts as a mocking Asian accent? I just did.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I hope not, because we almost lost our jobs over
- 0:13Speaker 1: that one time. I don't know whether that would count.
- 0:20Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 0:22Speaker 1: I went to Godzilla minus one over the weekend. Had
- 0:26Speaker 1: you all heard of that, Katie, Joe Michael, anybody? Have
- 0:28Speaker 1: you ever even heard of that?
- 0:29Speaker 3: I never heard of it. I missed that one.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not getting the publicity that normally a blockbuster
- 0:36Speaker 1: movie like a Godzilla or King Kong would get because
- 0:38Speaker 1: it's not that kind of a movie at all. I
- 0:41Speaker 1: just heard that there actually is. Our friend Tim Sanderfer,
- 0:44Speaker 1: who is a man of letters, had twenty six of them,
- 0:49Speaker 1: had impressive, had tweeted out that this is the this
- 0:51Speaker 1: is finally a great monster movie Godzilla. Mines one thought,
- 0:54Speaker 1: oh okay, cool, and I was still just picturing like
- 0:57Speaker 1: a regular, like we've seen all the god Zilla movies,
- 1:01Speaker 1: the modern ones, all the King Kong movies. We've seen
- 1:03Speaker 1: Godzilla versus King Kong. We've seen Megaladon one and two,
- 1:07Speaker 1: which are the stupidest movies ever made. They're they're they're
- 1:11Speaker 1: they're basically Shark Nato with a giant shark. More expensive cast, yeah,
- 1:18Speaker 1: more expensive actors. But that's I was kind of picturing that,
- 1:22Speaker 1: but like maybe better, but no, it's not at all.
- 1:24Speaker 1: God Zilla minus one is a Japanese movie subtitles black
- 1:29Speaker 1: and white, and it's a hardcore art film. It's like
- 1:32Speaker 1: the sort of thing they would make you watch in
- 1:34Speaker 1: a college class and then you'd have to write a
- 1:35Speaker 1: paper about it. It's way closer to that than a
- 1:38Speaker 1: than a blockbuster movie, and so you don't hear as
- 1:43Speaker 1: much about it. And it was huge in Japan. It's
- 1:46Speaker 1: doing pretty well in the United States. It has had
- 1:48Speaker 1: some Oscar nominations. Uh. I don't know how to explain
- 1:53Speaker 1: it minus one. I guess it's a translation thing. It
- 1:57Speaker 1: means Japan was so far beaten down at the end
- 2:03Speaker 1: of World War Two that they were like blow world something.
- 2:08Speaker 2: That's what the minus one means.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And this movie is featured at the very end of
- 2:13Speaker 1: World War two and the and the aftermath, when we
- 2:15Speaker 1: had just reduced it to rubble, even before we dropped
- 2:18Speaker 1: to the atomic bombs, it was rubble. And it's featured
- 2:22Speaker 1: in Tokyo mostly and they're just people living like cavemen,
- 2:26Speaker 1: the people that are still alive, scrounging for food, trying
- 2:30Speaker 1: to push some boards and rocks together to have something
- 2:34Speaker 1: to keep you out of the rain. You know, you're
- 2:37Speaker 1: by yourself because your whole family's dead, and you team
- 2:39Speaker 1: up with some old lady who the rest of her
- 2:41Speaker 1: family is dead and you try to make a go
- 2:43Speaker 1: of it. Is this a comedy. It's a comedy sort
- 2:48Speaker 1: of in line with like sort of The Three Stooges
- 2:51Speaker 1: meets Jim Carrey. Yeah, yeah, No, it is not a
- 2:56Speaker 1: comedy obviously, and starring Will Ferrell, that's exactly a lot
- 3:01Speaker 1: of Will Ferrell makes a comic cameo. Jack Black plays
- 3:05Speaker 1: a prominent role.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Nice.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Now, it's a very heavy movie, and long parts of
- 3:13Speaker 1: it are silent. There's not a sound, no music, nobody talking,
- 3:18Speaker 1: no nothing, and it's so quiet in the theater. It's
- 3:21Speaker 1: just like weird. I don't think I've ever been to
- 3:23Speaker 1: a movie that got silent for that long before.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Wow. Wow's that's interesting.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And I'm not going to try to describe it because
- 3:30Speaker 1: I couldn't, but just making the point that by the
- 3:35Speaker 1: climactic scene where like with all Godzilla King Kong movies.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You know it's time to finally, like really confront the
- 3:44Speaker 1: monster with your best plan to bring him down and
- 3:46Speaker 1: save humanity. You know that has featured in all of
- 3:48Speaker 1: those Megaladon or Jaws or whatever. When it gets to
- 3:53Speaker 1: that final scene, you feel way more like you're watching
- 3:57Speaker 1: saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers or something. Thing.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Then you do a monster movie. I mean, like the
- 4:03Speaker 1: director managed to make it like you don't even think
- 4:06Speaker 1: about it being Godzilla in a giant radioactive creature that
- 4:10Speaker 1: can stomp on people in crushed buildings somehow, like that
- 4:15Speaker 1: doesn't even matter anymore. It's all about humanity in wartime
- 4:19Speaker 1: and sticking together and overcoming adversity and just you know,
- 4:23Speaker 1: it's just it's hard to explain. I thought it was phenomenal,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and no longer things seems it doesn't even seem weird
- 4:31Speaker 1: that you're like tugging at my heartstrings in a Godzilla movie.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Yeah, wow, that's such an interesting like union of being
- 4:44Speaker 4: invested in characters and how that affects your willingness to
- 4:48Speaker 4: suspend disbelief.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, yes, that is exactly it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I think that was like the Harry Potter formula, although
- 4:56Speaker 4: that's obviously fantasy and everybody knows it.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Well, this was as gritty, realistic as any movie I've
- 5:04Speaker 1: ever seen. And it featured a giant monster that can
- 5:06Speaker 1: crush buildings under its feet, which doesn't seem like it'd
- 5:09Speaker 1: be possible in terms of the theater going experience. And
- 5:13Speaker 1: there's hardly anybody at this this Saturday night, seven o'clock.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I think there were a total of ten people in there. Wow,
- 5:20Speaker 1: because nobody's heard of it, and that's an art film.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And my youngest kid didn't like it much. He didn't
- 5:25Speaker 1: like the reading. There's a lot of reading really fast
- 5:27Speaker 1: and his reading is not quite up to and a
- 5:30Speaker 1: lot of really hard words, so he just couldn't quite
- 5:33Speaker 1: keep up with it. But my eighth grader loved it.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Thought it was really really good. It was a powerful movie.
- 5:40Speaker 1: But the whole movie going experience in the modern world,
- 5:45Speaker 1: everybody's got such a great TV with a cool sound system,
- 5:48Speaker 1: you got that whole thing. Although I've noticed this before,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I have walked out of many movie theaters in my
- 5:56Speaker 1: life like rattled in some way, either like you know,
- 6:02Speaker 1: down emotionally or inspired emotionally, or fired up emotionally or
- 6:06Speaker 1: something like that. And I don't know if that ever happens
- 6:09Speaker 1: when I watch on TV. I think it probably does.
- 6:13Speaker 4: I think being at home you get back to your
- 6:16Speaker 4: set point a lot more quick.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I think that's it.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Well, and you have control to turn it off and
- 6:22Speaker 3: change it. But I always feel like leaving.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I always feel like a walk out of movie theaters
- 6:26Speaker 1: and everybody's quiet because they're just like so affected by
- 6:28Speaker 1: what you saw in.
- 6:29Speaker 2: One way or another.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And I never feel that way at home. Really, I
- 6:34Speaker 1: don't think anyway.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Maybe there's a I think there's something about and I
- 6:41Speaker 4: think that was right the first time when you leave
- 6:44Speaker 4: a movie. Other than like zipping up your jacket, all
- 6:47Speaker 4: you're doing is walking to your putting on my.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Shoes, putting on my shoes, because I take off my
- 6:52Speaker 1: shoes and socks put.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Them on the scene in front of me.
- 6:55Speaker 1: That guy.
- 6:57Speaker 2: No, I do not, But that's funny.
- 6:58Speaker 4: So even if you're check in your phone or whatever,
- 7:01Speaker 4: you have three to five minutes where you're doing nothing
- 7:06Speaker 4: but thinking about what you've just maybe that's it. Whereas
- 7:09Speaker 4: you know, you turn off the TV at home and
- 7:11Speaker 4: then you would go.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Do something and get the kids to bed or whatever.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Right, yeah, yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Uh, but the dude did when your kids were younger,
- 7:20Speaker 1: did you buy them treats to go to the movie occasionally? See,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I grew up in a family where we never did.
- 7:27Speaker 1: It wasn't even a consideration. It's like, we're not getting
- 7:30Speaker 1: that stuff because it's too expensive. That's fine, yep, already eight.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I'm not thirsty. If I'm thirsty, I'll go get a
- 7:34Speaker 1: drink of water at the drinking van.
- 7:36Speaker 5: I knew a family that would hide the treats and
- 7:38Speaker 5: mom's purse.
- 7:39Speaker 4: But yeah, you know I used to bring you know,
- 7:42Speaker 4: we'd smuggle in uh popcorn in our pockets.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Sometimes.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I used to bring beer to the movies all the time.
- 7:47Speaker 1: You gotta wait for a loud part. You gotta wait
- 7:49Speaker 1: for God'zilla to scream before I open your beer. If
- 7:51Speaker 1: you open your beer during the silent, is the baby
- 7:53Speaker 1: gonna die or not seen?
- 7:56Speaker 3: Your girl has mastered opening a bottle of champagne in
- 7:59Speaker 3: a movie.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Nice style points.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I remember one time when I kicked over my empty
- 8:05Speaker 1: bottle of beer and it rolled all the way down,
- 8:08Speaker 1: clicking it, clicking it click.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Oh yeah, And then what you do is you start
- 8:16Speaker 3: looking around, like, what is that?
- 8:18Speaker 1: What? You're generous? Who is doing that? Somebody brought in
- 8:23Speaker 1: some unauthorized food or drink and I'll take away if
- 8:25Speaker 1: somebody would do that, and I'll see it. I think
- 8:27Speaker 1: we should pause the movie and go through everybody's pockets
- 8:29Speaker 1: until we can find out who this miscreanton is. But
- 8:34Speaker 1: I think I am gonna tell my kids, mostly for
- 8:36Speaker 1: the noise reason, partly for the money reason. No, we're
- 8:38Speaker 1: not doing this next time. Let's eat before we go.
- 8:41Speaker 1: We can even stop and get a treat, but we're
- 8:43Speaker 1: not gonna buy stuff at the theater.
- 8:45Speaker 2: One.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I don't want to listen to you eating and drinking.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Oh right, if I took the drink away from one
- 8:51Speaker 1: of my kids, like doneenough, because he kept doing the
- 8:53Speaker 1: at the bottom, you know, trying to get the last
- 8:55Speaker 1: two SIPs through the ice thing, Like yeah, you quit.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I took it out of his hand and put it
- 9:00Speaker 1: in my couple.
- 9:01Speaker 3: You blessed every other person with the same sound issue
- 9:04Speaker 3: in that in that theater.
- 9:05Speaker 1: That right, So, but between the noise the cost, we
- 9:08Speaker 1: spent fifty bucks at the concession stand. Jeez, that's nuts
- 9:13Speaker 1: with the modern inflation.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Yeah, two kids, I.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Got smolves, but I got in the largest I don't know.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I had to get a loan.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I had to apply for a loan and somebody had
- 9:21Speaker 1: had to be there to fill up my paperwork and
- 9:23Speaker 1: look at my credit score.
- 9:25Speaker 4: So if this movie is successful, they've got to, you know,
- 9:29Speaker 4: continue the theme. And I, you know, on the radio show,
- 9:34Speaker 4: I just throughout the idea King Kong it anteat them then,
- 9:40Speaker 4: I don't know, maybe sas Squatch at a house fire
- 9:44Speaker 4: where a family loses their house and he takes them
- 9:48Speaker 4: in or eats them, or.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I don't know, Frankenstein's list, if Frankenstein had done Shindler's List.
- 9:55Speaker 6: There you go. Now you're thinking, yeah, I'd watch it. Yeah,
- 10:01Speaker 6: I told people, and I got a date. I said,
- 10:02Speaker 6: it's way closer to Dos Boot than it is to
- 10:05Speaker 6: King Kong.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Right. Count Dracula is a gifted cancer doctor, but he
- 10:12Speaker 4: has a blood addiction. Right, he's noble, but he just
- 10:16Speaker 4: can't he's a junkie.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, something like that.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that'd be a hit.
- 10:23Speaker 1: The Mummy in Philadelphia, so you get the dying AIDS
- 10:25Speaker 1: guy and the Mummy. Yeah they're hanging out together. Yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Plot twist solving crimes or something.
- 10:35Speaker 4: They're actually lovers who solve crimes.
- 10:38Speaker 5: My wife and I tried to sneak Fahitas into the
- 10:41Speaker 5: theater at one time. Was really hot and I forgot
- 10:44Speaker 5: the hot paths which really really it was sizzling and everything. Well,
- 10:53Speaker 5: I guess that's it.
