- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcast on the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Brink Thursday, May twenty, first holiday weekend is upon us.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Big weekend obviously in the state of Indiana. With the
- 0:29Speaker 1: Indian Apples five hundred coming up, this weekend should be
- 0:33Speaker 1: a lot of fun. The blackout, I guess is lifted
- 0:37Speaker 1: with the sellout, so I know a lot of people
- 0:38Speaker 1: around the state excited about that. Not going to be
- 0:42Speaker 1: talking too much Indy five hundred here on this week's
- 0:44Speaker 1: episode of Podcast on the Brink, but we do have
- 0:47Speaker 1: Galen Clavio Crimson cast host with us for this week's episode.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Has been a while since we've had a chance to
- 0:54Speaker 1: talk to Galen. Really excited for that conversation before we
- 0:57Speaker 1: get to Galen. If you enjoy the show over on
- 0:59Speaker 1: Apple podcast Spotify, please leave us a five star rating
- 1:02Speaker 1: and a review. Really appreciate the reviews, the support there.
- 1:05Speaker 1: For watching on YouTube like the video, subscribe to the channel,
- 1:08Speaker 1: appreciate the support there as well. Galen, Always good to
- 1:12Speaker 1: see you, Always good to talk to you. It's probably
- 1:16Speaker 1: found a little bit more lonely these days in Bloomington
- 1:18Speaker 1: with the students leaving campus. What's it like in the
- 1:20Speaker 1: spring kind of being around campus there once the summer hits,
- 1:25Speaker 1: you know, always Krona Kouzier likes to talk about b
- 1:29Speaker 1: town summers founding a patio, plenty of seating. Is is
- 1:32Speaker 1: that reality that these days in Bloomington with the students
- 1:35Speaker 1: headed at home for the summer.
- 1:37Speaker 2: It is there's always a taper off because you've still
- 1:40Speaker 2: got I core students from Kelly in town generally for
- 1:43Speaker 2: the first part of the summer, but it is noticeably
- 1:47Speaker 2: less busy. So yeah, you can hit the restaurants you
- 1:49Speaker 2: have been able to get into, you can grab a patio.
- 1:52Speaker 2: We would like the weather to cooperate a little bit
- 1:54Speaker 2: more because, as I'm sure it's been where you live,
- 1:57Speaker 2: we're basically just living underwater at this point thanks to
- 2:00Speaker 2: all the rain. But it's been nice and it's always
- 2:04Speaker 2: a nice breather after the craziness of March in April
- 2:07Speaker 2: and Bloomington is there.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I know we're mainly gonna talk basketball, but football season
- 2:12Speaker 1: is kind of what's next on the on the play
- 2:14Speaker 1: here is there is there a buzz in Bloomington already
- 2:17Speaker 1: building for next season? Obviously, the it's the honeymoon from
- 2:21Speaker 1: the National Championships still not worn off, but I don't
- 2:24Speaker 1: know if it ever will, because you know, it was
- 2:26Speaker 1: such an improbable season and people are gonna be excited
- 2:29Speaker 1: about that for forever. But what is the buzz already
- 2:32Speaker 1: building for football next fall?
- 2:34Speaker 2: I would say so. The thing about Bloomington, it's hard
- 2:38Speaker 2: to find a ton of buzz when there aren't students
- 2:40Speaker 2: here period. It's like a dull hum. But the hum
- 2:44Speaker 2: is definitely there for football. If you haven't been to
- 2:47Speaker 2: Bloomington in a while. There's this delightful mural that's been
- 2:50Speaker 2: painted on the side of the building that overlooks People's
- 2:53Speaker 2: Park on Kirkwood. It is entirely football themed. And you know,
- 2:58Speaker 2: with Kurt Signetti going up and driving the pace car
- 3:01Speaker 2: or the DY five hundred, you've had all this Fernando
- 3:04Speaker 2: related media coming out with him being drafted by the Raiders,
- 3:08Speaker 2: and obviously a lot of excitement coming out of spring ball.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I mean there were twenty five twenty six thousand people
- 3:13Speaker 2: in the stands for spring ball, which probably doesn't sound
- 3:15Speaker 2: like a ton, but if you've been to a spring
- 3:17Speaker 2: game before at IU, that's remarkable. So yeah, there's excitement,
- 3:23Speaker 2: and it's one of the things we're going to be
- 3:25Speaker 2: launching into a lot more on Crimson Cast here over
- 3:26Speaker 2: the next couple of months. We've got a ton of
- 3:28Speaker 2: season previews that we're getting ready to do so great,
- 3:31Speaker 2: good times, and certainly still trying to figure out what
- 3:34Speaker 2: the heck happened over the last two years and how
- 3:36Speaker 2: we got so fortunate with everything.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, so IU basketball obviously a tough season. I don't
- 3:42Speaker 1: want to rehash too much of it, but basically I
- 3:47Speaker 1: don't know from my perspective. I picked him tenth in
- 3:49Speaker 1: the preseason. That's where they finished in the Big Ten.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I thought they had a solid chance to make the tournament.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I guess maybe if the expansion would have happened last season,
- 3:57Speaker 1: they would have been in there. They were right on
- 3:58Speaker 1: the cusp, I guess, depending on what projection you wanted
- 4:01Speaker 1: to look at. But big picture, in terms of how
- 4:05Speaker 1: last season went, where did it fall for you? In
- 4:08Speaker 1: terms of what you expected going in and what actually transpired.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I would say I had hope, but I had lower
- 4:16Speaker 2: expectations at the start of the season, and then when
- 4:20Speaker 2: the season started they were playing pretty well and I
- 4:23Speaker 2: was like, oh, my expectations have risen. And then I
- 4:27Speaker 2: feel like the way that they finished. It was very
- 4:31Speaker 2: It ended up being more disappointing than I think I
- 4:33Speaker 2: thought it was going to be, and so I think sometimes, well,
- 4:36Speaker 2: if that whole thing had been reversed, if they'd started
- 4:38Speaker 2: off disappointing and then rallied and just missed the tournament
- 4:42Speaker 2: at the end, would it been a more acceptable season. Maybe.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I mean, we're always somewhat biased by what's happened most recently,
- 4:50Speaker 2: but I just feel like the team got progressively less
- 4:54Speaker 2: enjoyable to watch as the season went along, and parts
- 4:58Speaker 2: just weren't working for t picularly well, and I think
- 5:01Speaker 2: that that contributed to the feeling that it was basically
- 5:05Speaker 2: a continuation of what you've had from the previous couple
- 5:07Speaker 2: of seasons at the end of Mike woodson tenure, which
- 5:10Speaker 2: was kind of the last thing that IU basketball and
- 5:12Speaker 2: Darren Debrees needed for a debut year where things were
- 5:16Speaker 2: supposed to feel different.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So fast forward to the spring. What's what's again last season?
- 5:25Speaker 1: Let's let's try to forget it happened at this point.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I think if you're an IU basketball fan, that's kind
- 5:29Speaker 1: of the mindset you are. You you went into the
- 5:32Speaker 1: portal season hopeful that something would be different. Obviously, there
- 5:36Speaker 1: was the hiring of Ryan Carr, and it's kind of
- 5:39Speaker 1: been the impact that Carr had actually on this portal season.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You know, when Derez was asked about it a couple
- 5:47Speaker 1: of weeks ago, he kind of cited more of a
- 5:49Speaker 1: team effort and rather than just giving Ryan Carr the card,
- 5:51Speaker 1: which I think was actually a pretty good way to
- 5:54Speaker 1: to put it from his perspective, because obviously he didn't
- 5:56Speaker 1: want his coaching staff to feel underappreciated. And I do
- 5:59Speaker 1: think it was a team and I do think obviously
- 6:01Speaker 1: Carr had some impact, but in terms of what they
- 6:04Speaker 1: were able to accomplish in the portal, I feel like
- 6:07Speaker 1: last spring, and I'm probably guilty of this, you may
- 6:11Speaker 1: have been guilty of it when you talked about the team,
- 6:13Speaker 1: but I think we all kind of talked ourselves into
- 6:16Speaker 1: what was established in terms of the roster, and we
- 6:21Speaker 1: kind of looked at some of these guys and we
- 6:22Speaker 1: looked at, for example, a Reed Bailey. There was a
- 6:25Speaker 1: ton of excitement about him when he committed, and you know,
- 6:27Speaker 1: Kentucky wanted him some other high major schools, and he
- 6:30Speaker 1: looked at him and said, well, he's not a traditional
- 6:32Speaker 1: Big ten five. But Dereese is going to do things different.
- 6:34Speaker 1: You know, he's going to go with the small ball
- 6:36Speaker 1: lineup and it's going to be fun and a lot
- 6:39Speaker 1: of those situations. Taton Conway's another one that I think
- 6:42Speaker 1: a lot of people were excited about didn't work work out.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So this spring, the formula in terms of what they
- 6:49Speaker 1: did in terms of putting the roster together feels much different.
- 6:52Speaker 1: They went more for high major guys that have produced,
- 6:55Speaker 1: with the exception really of Darren Harris, who is a
- 6:58Speaker 1: high major guy who played at Duke. Didn't really produce
- 7:01Speaker 1: a lot, but you can kind of see the pedigree
- 7:03Speaker 1: in terms of the high school ranking. Do you when
- 7:07Speaker 1: you look at this portal hall, Obviously it's been ranked.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I think I've seen it as high as third nationally,
- 7:11Speaker 1: but most places have it in terms of the top
- 7:13Speaker 1: ten class wise. If you're an IU basketball fan, do
- 7:17Speaker 1: you feel better about what they got in terms of
- 7:20Speaker 1: talent wise from this portal class compared to last year?
- 7:24Speaker 1: And if so, why is that?
- 7:26Speaker 2: Well? Yes, I feel better, and it's because last year,
- 7:31Speaker 2: and I was just as guilty as you and others
- 7:34Speaker 2: on this I was going off of a theorem that Devrees,
- 7:39Speaker 2: having coached at Drake and then having coached at West Virginia,
- 7:43Speaker 2: would understand what was needed from a skill and physicality
- 7:47Speaker 2: and athleticism perspective to win games at the Big ten level,
- 7:51Speaker 2: that he was not bringing in players naively, that he
- 7:55Speaker 2: was assembling a roster that was going to be able
- 7:57Speaker 2: to compete with what you were going to face the conference.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And I was willing to wait because I had no
- 8:05Speaker 2: reason to disbelieve that that was the case. And then
- 8:08Speaker 2: once you got into conference play, it became very clear
- 8:11Speaker 2: that Lamur Wilkerson was an awesome scorer, and Sam Alexis
- 8:16Speaker 2: did have the physicality where he could compete on a
- 8:18Speaker 2: night in, night out basis, but there were a lot
- 8:21Speaker 2: of other pieces that just were not physically or athletically
- 8:25Speaker 2: up to the task. And the vast majority of those
- 8:28Speaker 2: players came from what we would call mid major schools
- 8:31Speaker 2: or lower And so I feel better about what they
- 8:34Speaker 2: brought in this year for a couple of reasons. First
- 8:36Speaker 2: of all, high major experience and proven production. In a
- 8:40Speaker 2: lot of cases, not all the way through, but where
- 8:44Speaker 2: there's not proven production at least among the core players,
- 8:47Speaker 2: there is at least a pedigree of athleticism, Harris being
- 8:52Speaker 2: a former five star, I think prospect and you've got
- 8:55Speaker 2: that case with a couple of other folks like these
- 8:58Speaker 2: guys were sought after players in the recruiting cycle amongst
- 9:02Speaker 2: power conference teams, and so you know, it's one of
- 9:07Speaker 2: those deals where I believe that, as we're seeing across
- 9:11Speaker 2: college basketball, there's just a certain caliber of athletes you
- 9:14Speaker 2: have to have if you're going to really be competitive
- 9:17Speaker 2: in the Big Ten and the SEC in the ACC
- 9:20Speaker 2: to some degree, and this looks closer to what you
- 9:24Speaker 2: would see on other rosters than what we've seen, frankly
- 9:27Speaker 2: in quite a while. And I think the question still is, well,
- 9:32Speaker 2: a can they mesh and coalesce and be You've got
- 9:35Speaker 2: several players, for instance, out of the ACC, which is
- 9:38Speaker 2: not the strongest conference in college basketball right now, So
- 9:41Speaker 2: there is a little bit of a reserve in my
- 9:42Speaker 2: brain about, well, did they get the best of the
- 9:45Speaker 2: second tier of players? Maybe they did, but this is
- 9:49Speaker 2: where you're kind of out of excuses if you're Darren
- 9:52Speaker 2: DeVries and the coaching staff already, which sounds sad to say,
- 9:55Speaker 2: but in an era where talent evaluation is so vital
- 10:00Speaker 2: where you have to be able to figure out very quickly,
- 10:02Speaker 2: and where we've seen, like at the University of Kentucky,
- 10:05Speaker 2: like we see what happens when that doesn't work. This
- 10:08Speaker 2: is one of those situations where I'll be willing to
- 10:13Speaker 2: go along with it and think, yes, I think this
- 10:15Speaker 2: is the direction that they needed to go and that
- 10:17Speaker 2: they've done a good job with it. But obviously we'll
- 10:19Speaker 2: have to wait and see when the rubber meets the road,
- 10:22Speaker 2: and I guess, maybe more to the point, when the
- 10:24Speaker 2: shoes hit the floor.
- 10:26Speaker 1: In November. When we talked to Derez a couple of
- 10:29Speaker 1: weeks ago, you know, I asked him just point blank,
- 10:33Speaker 1: what was maybe what he learned from maybe the last
- 10:36Speaker 1: two cycles in terms of portal recruiting, because he's kind
- 10:39Speaker 1: of had to do the flip the whole roster thing now.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I think three straight years he did at West Virginia
- 10:44Speaker 1: with the brand new team. He did it last year
- 10:46Speaker 1: in Indiana, a brand new team again this year in Indiana,
- 10:48Speaker 1: brand new team. And one of the things he brought
- 10:50Speaker 1: up was just what felt different about this year is
- 10:53Speaker 1: he actually had a staff in place and kind of
- 10:55Speaker 1: the infrastructure. Do you think that. Do you think there's
- 11:00Speaker 1: any merit to that and in terms of what they
- 11:03Speaker 1: were able to put together from the portal class this year,
- 11:05Speaker 1: because I think back to last year and you know,
- 11:08Speaker 1: I looked at some of these days. I think Rod
- 11:10Speaker 1: Clark was hired into April, Kenny Johnson was a little
- 11:15Speaker 1: bit into April, and then and you look at this year,
- 11:20Speaker 1: that first weekend when they could have guys on campus,
- 11:22Speaker 1: I think they had three or four guys on campus,
- 11:23Speaker 1: and then those commitments started. I think it was a
- 11:25Speaker 1: three day span where they got six players. It wasn't
- 11:28Speaker 1: like that last year. And then you know, last year,
- 11:30Speaker 1: the commitments kind of kept trickling in, but then you
- 11:33Speaker 1: look at the quality of those players, Like as time
- 11:35Speaker 1: went on, I felt like the quality of the player
- 11:38Speaker 1: diminished over time, so it was almost like they were
- 11:41Speaker 1: picking the best of what was left over. And even
- 11:43Speaker 1: watching now, what's the portal has kind of ground to
- 11:49Speaker 1: a hault at this point in terms of commitments and
- 11:51Speaker 1: you look at it, there's five or six happening every day,
- 11:53Speaker 1: but the quality of the player has gone down so much.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But I'm curious to you if you buy that argument
- 12:00Speaker 1: that maybe last year was underwhelming in terms of what
- 12:03Speaker 1: they were able to get based on needing to have
- 12:06Speaker 1: to put the staff together and you know, just trying
- 12:10Speaker 1: to get acclimated to the new job. It seemed like
- 12:12Speaker 1: this year. I do buy the fact that they were
- 12:15Speaker 1: a little bit more prepared, but that should be kind
- 12:18Speaker 1: of a given based on being in the job for
- 12:20Speaker 1: a year.
- 12:22Speaker 2: So I buy the argument that not having the staff
- 12:27Speaker 2: together and people remember, I think that the plan was
- 12:30Speaker 2: they were going to bring in a particular coach, the assistant,
- 12:36Speaker 2: the recruiting assistant at Alabama whose name is escaping me,
- 12:40Speaker 2: Preston Murphy, thank you, And that negotiation went on apparently,
- 12:44Speaker 2: or at least it seemed like, for about a week
- 12:46Speaker 2: and a half, and then it didn't happen. Then they
- 12:48Speaker 2: were going to pivot to a different assistant from Texas Tech. Yep,
- 12:53Speaker 2: that didn't happen, and then you had Kenny Johnson hired,
- 12:56Speaker 2: and then things started to happen. I buy the idea
- 12:58Speaker 2: that that put their portal recruitment process behind because Devrees
- 13:03Speaker 2: was not hired particularly late. We did a whole breakdown
- 13:07Speaker 2: on this on Crimson Cast, and he was I mean,
- 13:09Speaker 2: he wasn't hired as early as say Jay Lucas at Miami,
- 13:13Speaker 2: but he was hired pretty darn early compared to other coaches.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Where I don't buy it as an excuse is if
- 13:22Speaker 2: you understand how the portal process works, and Devrees should have,
- 13:26Speaker 2: because as you just noted, he went through this at
- 13:28Speaker 2: West Virginia the previous year. You have to have a
- 13:31Speaker 2: staff in place, or at least a core person who's
- 13:34Speaker 2: on campus working on your behalf, working on the program's behalf,
- 13:37Speaker 2: from the moment you get there, in advance of when
- 13:40Speaker 2: that portal comes open, and so I do think that
- 13:43Speaker 2: it was a situation where they got harmed by not
- 13:46Speaker 2: having it. I just don't particularly feel sympathetic to the
- 13:50Speaker 2: excuse for that, because I think you can do those
- 13:55Speaker 2: types of negotiations for a day or two, but when
- 13:57Speaker 2: time is ticking and you know you've got to be
- 14:00Speaker 2: in competition for players, you've just got to act faster.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I do think that perhaps there was a feeling that
- 14:06Speaker 2: the brand of Indiana was perhaps going to pull players
- 14:11Speaker 2: in a way that would compensate for that. And I
- 14:14Speaker 2: also don't think that they expected to wait as long
- 14:16Speaker 2: as they did, And I'm sure there were things that
- 14:18Speaker 2: went on behind the scenes that we don't know about
- 14:20Speaker 2: that made delays. And I get all that, and look,
- 14:22Speaker 2: I'm not blaming anybody. I just don't think if you're
- 14:24Speaker 2: in a place like Indiana, I just don't think that
- 14:27Speaker 2: that's a reasonable excuse given what we already knew about
- 14:30Speaker 2: how the portal works.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and we saw plenty of other examples of first
- 14:33Speaker 1: year coaches around the country who had to do I
- 14:35Speaker 1: don't want to say they had to bring in as
- 14:37Speaker 1: many players because I think most of them at least
- 14:39Speaker 1: retained a little bit, which Indiana did not for various
- 14:43Speaker 1: reasons that we won't get into, just kind of based
- 14:45Speaker 1: on going from a completely different style of play players
- 14:48Speaker 1: that were clearly some of them, a lot of them
- 14:51Speaker 1: I think Indiana probably didn't want back to begin with.
- 14:54Speaker 1: But anyway, there was plenty of other examples from coaches
- 14:57Speaker 1: around the country that made the tournament their first year
- 14:59Speaker 1: that kind I had to do a rebuild, a quick rebuild.
- 15:02Speaker 1: So fast forward to what they actually got from this
- 15:05Speaker 1: portal class, and Marcus Burton and Aiden Scharrell seem like
- 15:09Speaker 1: kind of the headliners in terms of what they're able
- 15:13Speaker 1: to bring to the table. Just what of what you
- 15:17Speaker 1: know about those two. What I guess intrigues you the
- 15:20Speaker 1: most about Burton and Cherrell And in terms of the
- 15:24Speaker 1: roster at hole, maybe what are your biggest question marks
- 15:27Speaker 1: in terms of what could be missing or what potential
- 15:31Speaker 1: pitfalls they could run into next season with the team
- 15:33Speaker 1: they've assembled.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I think the biggest question mark with Burton is does
- 15:37Speaker 2: he have an injury problem or is you know, did
- 15:40Speaker 2: he just have a situation where he had an injury
- 15:43Speaker 2: and that he's such a talented player that I'm I
- 15:49Speaker 2: tend to think that if from from the way the
- 15:51Speaker 2: injuries happened, that it was a situation where perhaps you know,
- 15:56Speaker 2: it's not something that's going to be recurring. These were
- 15:59Speaker 2: kind of unavoidable things. But I think you'd be remiss
- 16:02Speaker 2: by if you didn't mention the injury issue and the
- 16:05Speaker 2: fact that he only played ten games last year, So
- 16:08Speaker 2: you're taking it somewhat on faith that he's going to
- 16:10Speaker 2: be the player that he looked like he was going
- 16:12Speaker 2: to be at the start of the year last year
- 16:15Speaker 2: for Notre Dame. I also would say that, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 2: I'm curious how he looks in an environment where he's
- 16:23Speaker 2: got I think a more talented team around him. So
- 16:27Speaker 2: you might have bought low on a player who really
- 16:30Speaker 2: has a high ceiling, and I do think that that
- 16:32Speaker 2: is exciting. I think the fact that this is a
- 16:34Speaker 2: guy that Darren Devrees was very familiar with, you know, famously,
- 16:38Speaker 2: Drake was his first offer, and Devrees was there when
- 16:41Speaker 2: he made the offer. So those things I don't think
- 16:44Speaker 2: that I think they went in eyes wide open. This
- 16:46Speaker 2: was clearly a guy that they had targeted. And the
- 16:47Speaker 2: fact that Houston was also interested in Marcus Burton and
- 16:51Speaker 2: he came to Indiana instead tells us a lot. I
- 16:54Speaker 2: don't think it was just him coming because the nil
- 16:56Speaker 2: check was better or something like that. Charrell, I think
- 17:02Speaker 2: this is one. This is the type of player. I
- 17:04Speaker 2: kind of feel the same way about him. This will
- 17:06Speaker 2: sound weird, I know, but I feel the same about
- 17:09Speaker 2: him that I feel felt about Omar Balo. It's a
- 17:11Speaker 2: player that you watched and you're like, wow, we never
- 17:14Speaker 2: get players like that at Indiana, and now we've got
- 17:16Speaker 2: him on the roster at Indiana. And you look at
- 17:20Speaker 2: his numbers, you look at his size. I mean, to
- 17:22Speaker 2: be six' eleven and to be that efficient of a,
- 17:25Speaker 2: scorer to be a great offensive, rebounder but also to
- 17:28Speaker 2: be a guy that seems to want to play a
- 17:31Speaker 2: bit outside because he knows that that's the type of
- 17:33Speaker 2: game he's going to have to have if he's going
- 17:35Speaker 2: to make it in THE. Nba that's going to present
- 17:38Speaker 2: some interesting. Challenges BUT i also think this is one
- 17:40Speaker 2: of those talents that you, Know Nate oates has done
- 17:44Speaker 2: a great job of finding exactly the right types of
- 17:46Speaker 2: guys that can play modern basketball at a championship level
- 17:50Speaker 2: At alabama the last few. Years and to be able
- 17:51Speaker 2: to pull this guy away and have him come To
- 17:54Speaker 2: indiana IS i think a sign that there is a
- 17:57Speaker 2: belief that What Darren DeVries and his staff want to
- 18:00Speaker 2: do can get players to the next level and can
- 18:03Speaker 2: put them in a position to. Succeed, so you, know,
- 18:06Speaker 2: YEAH i think that those two guys are definitely the,
- 18:08Speaker 2: headliners AND i Am i'm excited about both of them
- 18:12Speaker 2: being In indiana. Uniform i'm also Really i'm quite interested
- 18:17Speaker 2: in Uh In yeguitolu FROM. Smu this is another player
- 18:22Speaker 2: the likes of which we just haven't seen that much At.
- 18:25Speaker 2: INDIANA a seven to two guy who's.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Has there ever been a seven to two guy In.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Indiana we debated this and AND i believe Uve blop
- 18:33Speaker 2: was only seven, one but there's there is there is
- 18:38Speaker 2: disagreement in the statistics from back in the. Day His
- 18:42Speaker 2: MAVs stats have him at seven to, one SO i
- 18:44Speaker 2: doubt he shrank between college and THE. Nba so, yeah
- 18:47Speaker 2: he might be the tallest certainly the tallest STARTER i
- 18:49Speaker 2: think That indiana's ever brought. In and you know this
- 18:53Speaker 2: is you're gonna have a non traditional four and a
- 18:57Speaker 2: non traditional five the way that this roster is laid,
- 19:00Speaker 2: Out And i'm excited about that because that really is
- 19:03Speaker 2: to some, DEGREE i think What Darren davrez's offense is
- 19:07Speaker 2: most likely to thrive with is mismatches and being able
- 19:12Speaker 2: to drag players off the. Perimeter you, know you could
- 19:15Speaker 2: tell is not a guy who's going to shoot from,
- 19:16Speaker 2: outside so he's going to offer a little bit more
- 19:18Speaker 2: classic grim. Protection but he's also a really good. SCORER i,
- 19:21Speaker 2: mean he shot sixty three percent from two last. Year
- 19:24Speaker 2: that's that's really really. Exciting and he also pulls down
- 19:26Speaker 2: a ton of offensive. REBOUNDS i do think that this
- 19:29Speaker 2: has a chance to be based upon the players they brought.
- 19:31Speaker 2: In from a statistical profile, perspective a different type of
- 19:37Speaker 2: team than perhaps we've seen From Darren. Devrees you go
- 19:41Speaker 2: back and look At derees's history on Ken, pom and
- 19:45Speaker 2: you know WHAT i love is if you click on
- 19:46Speaker 2: the coach, name it'll line up like everything that they've
- 19:50Speaker 2: done in offensive and defensive efficiency throughout his whole career
- 19:53Speaker 2: and outside of a couple of years At, drake this
- 19:57Speaker 2: is a coach that has treated offensive rebound funding as
- 20:01Speaker 2: not that important.
- 20:02Speaker 1: HISTORICALLY i, mean of.
- 20:03Speaker 2: The four factors that make up what statistically we think
- 20:08Speaker 2: leads to efficient play in college, basketball which is effective
- 20:12Speaker 2: field goal, percentage turnover, percentage offensive rebounding, percentage and free throw.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Rate his teams have essentially not cared about offensive. Rebounding
- 20:20Speaker 2: Mike woodson's teams didn't care about offensive rebounding, either and
- 20:24Speaker 2: so this could be a much different looking roster as
- 20:26Speaker 2: a result of. It SO i am really interested in.
- 20:28Speaker 2: THAT i like the complimentary. PIECES i Think Bryce lindsay
- 20:31Speaker 2: is sneakily an excellent pickup and a guy that kind
- 20:34Speaker 2: of came in off the radar from where we thought
- 20:37Speaker 2: things were. Going And i'm Really i'm intrigued By Jaden
- 20:40Speaker 2: mustaf From Georgia. Tech And i'm also intrigued by whether
- 20:43Speaker 2: any of the guys that were already technically on the,
- 20:45Speaker 2: roster whether that was trans, sistently or any of the incoming,
- 20:48Speaker 2: freshmen can. Contribute you asked me about, like where AM i.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Nervous i'm nervous about the lack of post, depth BUT
- 20:57Speaker 2: i think that that's something that a lot of people
- 20:58Speaker 2: across the country are going to be nervous. About one
- 21:01Speaker 2: of the things we noticed in college football is there's
- 21:03Speaker 2: very little traditional depth even among the top programs in college,
- 21:07Speaker 2: football because it all transferred away to go get playing time.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Elsewhere that is essentially what you're going to see with
- 21:13Speaker 2: all but the elite teams in college basketball this upcoming.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Year you, Know i'm Sure michigan And yukon And duke
- 21:21Speaker 2: and a couple of other teams are going to be
- 21:23Speaker 2: pretty stocked in the post and have guys that can
- 21:25Speaker 2: bring it off the. Bench, INDIANA i think that when
- 21:28Speaker 2: they have to Spell yugatolu Or, sharell they're probably bringing
- 21:32Speaker 2: in a smaller lineup and they're playing more small ball
- 21:35Speaker 2: because they're gonna have. To but that might not be
- 21:37Speaker 2: a bad. Thing so you know anything beyond. That, again
- 21:40Speaker 2: it's just, like who's Your do you have a regular
- 21:43Speaker 2: number two ball handler Behind? Burton that would be the
- 21:47Speaker 2: other thing THAT i would look for who takes on that.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Role there seem like there's three or four guys who
- 21:50Speaker 2: could do. It i'm just curious who ends up being
- 21:53Speaker 2: the one that does.
- 21:54Speaker 1: It, yeah the one, thing a couple of THINGS i.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Had someone asked me, recently like about the post, steps
- 22:01Speaker 1: and my answer to them, was you, KNOW i not
- 22:06Speaker 1: to Say i'm doing this with anybody, anybody BUT i
- 22:09Speaker 1: tracked The Big ten rosters probably as closely as anybody
- 22:11Speaker 1: in the offseason BECAUSE i put myself through this exercise
- 22:13Speaker 1: WHERE i basically track every move and just SO i
- 22:15Speaker 1: know what's going on with every team BECAUSE i feel
- 22:18Speaker 1: LIKE i need to know about the league and know
- 22:20Speaker 1: what's going on and. Everything and, so you, KNOW i
- 22:23Speaker 1: just took a quick look when someone asked me that
- 22:25Speaker 1: at the Other big ten, teams and there's not like
- 22:29Speaker 1: a lot of teams that have two big players Like
- 22:32Speaker 1: indiana of that caliber on their. ROSTER i, mean there's
- 22:35Speaker 1: obviously teams with good big. Men but so my question
- 22:39Speaker 1: back to that person, was would you rather Have indiana
- 22:42Speaker 1: spent their money on four big guys that were maybe
- 22:47Speaker 1: not as good as those two and spread the money
- 22:49Speaker 1: around that because you only have a finite amount of
- 22:51Speaker 1: money to, Spend SO i would rather get the two
- 22:53Speaker 1: guys who Are power five starters THAT i know can,
- 22:57Speaker 1: help and then try to fill in the gaps the
- 22:59Speaker 1: BEST i. Can the other THING i would, say just
- 23:00Speaker 1: in general about the roster THAT i THINK i like
- 23:03Speaker 1: better than about this year and last, year is it
- 23:06Speaker 1: seemed like they've kind of taken most of their resources
- 23:09Speaker 1: and spent them on six or seven players rather than
- 23:12Speaker 1: trying to spend out to like the tenth or eleventh
- 23:15Speaker 1: the last couple of guys that they've. ADDED i don't
- 23:17Speaker 1: know this for a, fact but my guess is they're
- 23:19Speaker 1: coming for a scholarship and not much more than. That
- 23:23Speaker 1: AND i think with the fact that they Retain sicily
- 23:27Speaker 1: and they've got the three, FRESHMEN i think ideally they're
- 23:32Speaker 1: going to need to play the six guys that they
- 23:34Speaker 1: got from the portal Play cicily and then hope that
- 23:37Speaker 1: one or two of the freshmen can give you minutes
- 23:39Speaker 1: and there's your eight and nine in the. Rotation Because
- 23:41Speaker 1: i'm also thinking ahead to the. Future if you want
- 23:45Speaker 1: to have this model of bringing in freshmen and have
- 23:48Speaker 1: them grow in your, program at some point you have
- 23:50Speaker 1: to play them and give them an. Opportunity otherwise they're
- 23:53Speaker 1: just gonna leave and you're going to continue to have
- 23:55Speaker 1: yourself in this position where you have to fill the whole.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Roster SO i actually hope that whether it Be Prince Alexander,
- 24:01Speaker 1: moody whether it Be Man, hurts or whether it Be Von,
- 24:03Speaker 1: carbala that one or two of those guys at least
- 24:07Speaker 1: can give you seven to ten minutes a game regularly
- 24:11Speaker 1: and have a plan to develop for the. Future because
- 24:14Speaker 1: that was one of the more disappointing things to me
- 24:16Speaker 1: about last season WAS i kind of understood what happened
- 24:19Speaker 1: With Trent sisly later in the season where he wasn't.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Playing obviously they were trying to make a. Tournament Tucker
- 24:23Speaker 1: devrees got pretty much all those, minutes was playing forty
- 24:26Speaker 1: minutes a lot of. Games Trent sisly wasn't getting off the,
- 24:29Speaker 1: Bench but in terms of, development it didn't really Help
- 24:32Speaker 1: Trent sisily for this. Year So i'm hoping that some
- 24:35Speaker 1: of those younger players can get an opportunity and you
- 24:38Speaker 1: spend the money on the core five or six. PLAYERS
- 24:41Speaker 1: i don't know what siscely, costs but freshmen aren't not
- 24:43Speaker 1: nearly as expensive as a portal. Guy you got to
- 24:45Speaker 1: help that some of those younger players develop and give you.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Something, YEAH i, mean the point about there not being
- 24:51Speaker 2: a lot of development is another flaw with the approach
- 24:55Speaker 2: from last, year and AGAIN i think it was a calculated,
- 24:58Speaker 2: gamble but the fact that they brought so many players
- 25:01Speaker 2: in who can have a couple of years if they
- 25:03Speaker 2: stick around or more is important because you just can't
- 25:08Speaker 2: keep flipping the roster every single. Year it's not economically
- 25:11Speaker 2: viable AND i don't think it's developmentally viable. Either and
- 25:14Speaker 2: you've got to have people who will advocate for the
- 25:18Speaker 2: program amongst the current. Players when you're talking to either
- 25:22Speaker 2: incoming recruits or you're talking to portal players next, year
- 25:26Speaker 2: you'd rather be topping it off with a couple of
- 25:28Speaker 2: players to add to the mix and have your current players, saying, hey,
- 25:31Speaker 2: man come join, us we're Having we've got a great
- 25:32Speaker 2: thing going. Here whereas this, YEAR i, mean you essentially had.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Nobody you Had Trent, sisley who didn't play for the
- 25:38Speaker 2: last half of the season more or, less and nobody
- 25:41Speaker 2: else stuck, around so you need that AND i think
- 25:44Speaker 2: it's a much smarter, approach AND i agree with you
- 25:48Speaker 2: in terms of the resource. Allocation there's not an unlimited
- 25:52Speaker 2: amount of, money AND i think people would be surprised
- 25:55Speaker 2: at the number of players that You i'm sure people
- 26:00Speaker 2: Wanted indiana to go try and get players that would
- 26:03Speaker 2: not have been worth the money that they ended up getting.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Elsewhere they wouldn't have been worth the money that you
- 26:08Speaker 2: spent to bring them in because they wouldn't have been
- 26:10Speaker 2: playing regularly enough to warrant. IT i think that they
- 26:14Speaker 2: fell into a little bit of that problem last year
- 26:16Speaker 2: just by a happenstance of how they brought certain players
- 26:20Speaker 2: in and when they brought them in and what roles
- 26:21Speaker 2: they were trying to. FILL i think they were a lot,
- 26:24Speaker 2: smarter at least on, paper with the types of guys
- 26:27Speaker 2: they went and, got the budget that they, utilized where
- 26:30Speaker 2: they allocated their money and where they didn't allocate their.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Money we're all kind of learning this on the. Fly
- 26:37Speaker 2: salary cap, management for lack of a better, term in college,
- 26:40Speaker 2: basketball it's a, reality and one of the realities is
- 26:44Speaker 2: even the richest programs can't just buy. Everybody you, know
- 26:48Speaker 2: there is No Texas tech equivalent right now in college
- 26:51Speaker 2: basketball except Maybe Texas tech, itself you. Know but the
- 26:56Speaker 2: idea of there has to be some discipline and who
- 26:59Speaker 2: you go out and. Get and unless you are a,
- 27:02Speaker 2: top top, program you're not gonna get guys to come
- 27:05Speaker 2: for money less money than they would and just sit
- 27:09Speaker 2: behind other. Guys and so you are dealing, with as you,
- 27:13Speaker 2: mentioned a lack of depth, everywhere and you'd really rather
- 27:16Speaker 2: focus your money on the starters and the guys that
- 27:19Speaker 2: are going to play and hope that you can figure
- 27:21Speaker 2: it out as you, go knowing that almost everybody else
- 27:24Speaker 2: you're playing is going to be in the same.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Boat, Yeah and people like to point out now, that,
- 27:28Speaker 1: well these guys can be around for two years if
- 27:30Speaker 1: five and five, passes several of them could be around
- 27:33Speaker 1: hypothetically for three, years which would BE i think even
- 27:36Speaker 1: better for continuity if they're players don't work. Out BUT
- 27:39Speaker 1: i do like the fact that they brought in more
- 27:42Speaker 1: guys with multiple years of. Eligibility the last GUY i
- 27:45Speaker 1: wanted to just get your thoughts on what are this
- 27:48Speaker 1: was the guy that going back to the season THAT
- 27:50Speaker 1: i was looking at just based on where he, was
- 27:54Speaker 1: AND i knew that there was a connection potentially With Kenny.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Johnson But Darren harris coming in From, duke what do
- 28:00Speaker 1: you make of that signing and the fact that they
- 28:03Speaker 1: make it's kind of it kind of feels like a
- 28:05Speaker 1: bi low situation with a guy WHO i don't want
- 28:08Speaker 1: to call him a distressed, asset but you look at
- 28:10Speaker 1: who he went Into duke, with you, Know Cooper, Flag Konka,
- 28:14Speaker 1: nipple he another, Guy Isaiah evans who's going to be
- 28:16Speaker 1: a top pick in this year's. Draft these are the
- 28:18Speaker 1: guys that he was competing with for. Minutes AND i
- 28:20Speaker 1: think he looked at the situation At duke and, said you,
- 28:23Speaker 1: KNOW i played a little bit more as a. SOPHOMORE
- 28:24Speaker 1: i could probably go back as a junior and play fifteen,
- 28:27Speaker 1: minutes BUT i could go To indiana potentially and play
- 28:30Speaker 1: twenty eight or thirty. Minutes and you look at the
- 28:32Speaker 1: film from high school and you, say this was a
- 28:35Speaker 1: guy that coming out was built as one of the
- 28:37Speaker 1: top shooters in the. Country duke. Doesn't the THING i
- 28:40Speaker 1: like about the fact that he went To duke is
- 28:41Speaker 1: Because duke doesn't usually recruit anybody that can't play at that.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Level the opportunity just wasn't. There so he's a guy
- 28:48Speaker 1: That i'm kind of looking. AT i don't want to
- 28:50Speaker 1: say AN x, factor but he's a swing. Guy you,
- 28:51Speaker 1: know if he comes in and he's twelve to fourteen
- 28:54Speaker 1: points a game and shooting thirty seven or thirty eight
- 28:57Speaker 1: percent for, three all of a, sudden you're feeling a
- 28:59Speaker 1: lot better about the upside of your. Team.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Yeah, LOOK i think my feeling on him is essentially
- 29:07Speaker 2: it's worth taking the flyer on, him and you'd rather
- 29:12Speaker 2: roll with guys that had a high ceiling coming out
- 29:17Speaker 2: of high. School this is a and you, know he
- 29:19Speaker 2: played twenty two percent of the available minutes that were
- 29:22Speaker 2: that he had last, year so it wasn't like he never.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Played he just wasn't a key. Player and That's it's
- 29:29Speaker 2: one of those. DEALS i think you'll you'll see this
- 29:32Speaker 2: sometimes at certain. Programs you see it in football all the.
- 29:36Speaker 2: TIME i, Mean Ohio state brings in huge classes of
- 29:39Speaker 2: five stars and four stars and they don't all end
- 29:41Speaker 2: up panning out and they. TRANSFER i, mean, Ironically Ohio
- 29:46Speaker 2: state's quarterback is a guy who started At alabama and
- 29:49Speaker 2: transferred because there was going to be a better opportunity
- 29:51Speaker 2: to play somewhere. Else and SO i Am i'm curious
- 29:55Speaker 2: about what he might be able to. Do AND i
- 29:58Speaker 2: think that the the fact that he doesn't have to necessarily,
- 30:02Speaker 2: start but probably as being penciled in as a, starter
- 30:07Speaker 2: it probably bodes well for His like it's both protection
- 30:12Speaker 2: For indiana because if it just doesn't pan, out if
- 30:15Speaker 2: there was something that stunted his growth and development into
- 30:18Speaker 2: a regular player At, duke then you're not completely up
- 30:22Speaker 2: the river having brought him on the, roster but you're
- 30:26Speaker 2: also going to give him every opportunity to take advantage
- 30:28Speaker 2: of what's there in terms of playing, time and if
- 30:32Speaker 2: his skill set can be, unlocked THEN i really like
- 30:36Speaker 2: What i'm. SAYING i, MEAN i try to think back
- 30:37Speaker 2: to What duke players have had that type of a,
- 30:41Speaker 2: profile And i've been going back a few. YEARS i
- 30:44Speaker 2: haven't found a, ton but you, know even The duke
- 30:46Speaker 2: players that were playing somewhat regularly and decided to transfer
- 30:49Speaker 2: because they were getting recruited over Like Mark mitchell is
- 30:51Speaker 2: a good example of. This you Know Mark, mitchell you
- 30:54Speaker 2: know played two YEARS i think started maybe all the
- 30:58Speaker 2: games in both seasons and played a majority of. Minutes
- 31:02Speaker 2: transferred TO missoo the final two years of his career
- 31:06Speaker 2: and was a senior this last. Year and it was
- 31:08Speaker 2: a really good.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Player you.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Know it was a key player for That missouri team
- 31:11Speaker 2: that ended up making THE ncaa. Tournament SO i think
- 31:15Speaker 2: you always have to be a little bit careful when
- 31:16Speaker 2: you look at a guy like that Like harris and, say,
- 31:20Speaker 2: well he didn't he didn't break through At, duke so
- 31:22Speaker 2: he's probably not good enough to play at this. LEVEL
- 31:24Speaker 2: i think there's plenty of examples of guys who are good,
- 31:27Speaker 2: enough but if you get caught behind players that are
- 31:30Speaker 2: better than, you you just never get the. Opportunity and
- 31:33Speaker 2: the nice thing about this era is you can go somewhere.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Else, Right, yeah last THING i wanted to ask you
- 31:39Speaker 1: about kind of a load of, topic BUT i do
- 31:41Speaker 1: want to get your thoughts on this BECAUSE i know
- 31:42Speaker 1: you're into The you're maybe not into the bracketology scene
- 31:46Speaker 1: as much As andy who follows, it you, know starting
- 31:49Speaker 1: in Sometimes December, january BUT i know once the nitty
- 31:52Speaker 1: gritty gets into, it you're doing your bracket updates and
- 31:55Speaker 1: podcasts and making your. Projections what did you make of
- 31:58Speaker 1: Theon are you one of those people that says this
- 32:03Speaker 1: is gonna damage the tournament some way or A i
- 32:06Speaker 1: know we're all gonna watch, Anyway but what kind of
- 32:09Speaker 1: WHERE i came down on it was my interest in
- 32:12Speaker 1: the first four was already pretty limited to the you,
- 32:15Speaker 1: know the really the one year That indiana was in,
- 32:17Speaker 1: IT i can really say is the only TIME i
- 32:20Speaker 1: really watched it start to finish most of the, games
- 32:23Speaker 1: and OTHERWISE i kind of just skipped A thursday because to,
- 32:26Speaker 1: me Like thursday's the day where the tournament's actually. Starting
- 32:29Speaker 1: so the fact that we're gonna have more of this
- 32:32Speaker 1: play in uh stuff doesn't really excite. Me but at
- 32:36Speaker 1: the end of the, day once we get to the
- 32:37Speaker 1: sixty four or whatever it, is it will still be the.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Tournament But i'm curious kind of what what you made
- 32:42Speaker 1: of this whole situation and if it if it damages
- 32:45Speaker 1: the tournament in any.
- 32:45Speaker 2: WAY i talked about this With Grace I'm Crimson cast
- 32:49Speaker 2: earlier this. WEEK i am pretty agnostic about this from
- 32:54Speaker 2: the standpoint THAT i wasn't strongly in favor of. EXPANSION
- 32:58Speaker 2: i wasn't strongly opposed to. Expansion i've made the point
- 33:02Speaker 2: many times that we've added about one hundred teams To
- 33:06Speaker 2: division one since nineteen eighty, five and we've added four
- 33:10Speaker 2: tournament teams since then prior to this, expansion WHICH i
- 33:14Speaker 2: think that we're missing out on some teams that would
- 33:18Speaker 2: probably be able to win a game or. Two and
- 33:19Speaker 2: as much as we get caught up in the lead
- 33:22Speaker 2: into the tournament about oh, god all these bubble teams
- 33:24Speaker 2: are terrible and you, know why are we letting these teams?
- 33:27Speaker 2: In as much as it doesn't look good on the criteria,
- 33:31Speaker 2: front we keep seeing teams in playing games win, two,
- 33:36Speaker 2: three four games in the. TOURNAMENT i, Mean texas made
- 33:39Speaker 2: it to The sweet sixteen and almost knocked Off purdue
- 33:42Speaker 2: and started in the playing game this past. Year ucla
- 33:46Speaker 2: a couple of years ago made it all the way
- 33:48Speaker 2: to The final four and came.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Out to, you DIDN'T vc you make it? Once yes they.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Did and so that's WHERE i have a hard time
- 33:56Speaker 2: with the argument that adding eight teams damage is the
- 34:00Speaker 2: tournament in any meaningful. WAY i understand the people who
- 34:05Speaker 2: feel like we're letting in teams that don't deserve to be,
- 34:08Speaker 2: There Yet i'd also note that when we've let teams
- 34:11Speaker 2: in like, that LIKE i just, said sometimes they actually do.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Win And i've kind of gotten to the point with
- 34:17Speaker 2: bracketology WHERE i do wonder if the criteria that we're
- 34:21Speaker 2: using to select the, best like the best teams in
- 34:24Speaker 2: the tournament or the most deserving teams are really doing
- 34:27Speaker 2: a great job of capturing all of the teams that
- 34:30Speaker 2: are capable of contributing something in postseason. Play And i'm
- 34:34Speaker 2: not particularly bothered by adding four more games or whatever
- 34:38Speaker 2: it would. Be during the opening week before the tournament proper.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Starts you might not watch, THEM i might only watch
- 34:45Speaker 2: some of. THEM i might watch all of them Because
- 34:47Speaker 2: i'm kind of a tournament junkie AND i have been
- 34:49Speaker 2: my whole. Life i'm not going to be mad about extra,
- 34:52Speaker 2: basketball AND i just feel like when the tournament actually rolls,
- 34:55Speaker 2: around everybody's going to collectively shrug their shoulders and just move.
- 34:58Speaker 2: FORWARD i really do feel like there's it's it's probably not,
- 35:06Speaker 2: ideal BUT i also feel like the vehement disagreement and
- 35:12Speaker 2: the proclamations about ruining the tournament that have come from
- 35:15Speaker 2: so many circles in, media, especially it's way. OVERBLOWN i
- 35:19Speaker 2: JUST i don't see like there's there's there seems to
- 35:22Speaker 2: be an, attitude and this happens in college football coverage,
- 35:25Speaker 2: too this attitude, that, well we're protecting the. Game someone's
- 35:30Speaker 2: got to do. It we're protecting what, works and they're
- 35:33Speaker 2: going to ruin it by changing. It and yet there
- 35:35Speaker 2: have been so many changes that have happened in college post,
- 35:38Speaker 2: seasons whether it's football or, basketball over the last forty.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Years what it often turns into is people defending what
- 35:45Speaker 2: they grew up with or what they what they came
- 35:47Speaker 2: of age being a fan, of and that becomes the
- 35:50Speaker 2: thing that has to be, preserved not because it's necessarily
- 35:54Speaker 2: been there since time immemorial or that it's absolutely the
- 35:56Speaker 2: best way of doing, things but it's because that's what
- 35:58Speaker 2: they're comfortable. With and that's WHAT i interpret a lot
- 36:01Speaker 2: of the talk around the tournament expansion as. Such so
- 36:06Speaker 2: AGAIN i just kind of shrugged my shoulders at and it's, like,
- 36:09Speaker 2: WELL i probably at this point wouldn't have said yet
- 36:12Speaker 2: expand the, tournament BUT i don't think it matters that
- 36:14Speaker 2: much that they.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Did do you feel the same way about the college
- 36:17Speaker 1: football playoff or is that a different discussion.
- 36:19Speaker 2: NOW i actually think they should expand the college Football,
- 36:22Speaker 2: playoff and it's largely BECAUSE i don't think that twelve
- 36:26Speaker 2: games gives us anywhere close to a clear sense of
- 36:31Speaker 2: who the best teams in college football, are especially with
- 36:34Speaker 2: sixteen and eighteen team conferences where you're only playing fifty
- 36:37Speaker 2: to six percent of your conference schedule in the regular.
- 36:40Speaker 2: SEASON i, mean you look at this upcoming. Year it's
- 36:44Speaker 2: Like indiana doesn't Play. Oregon we're not going to see
- 36:47Speaker 2: that in the regular. Season the idea that we're going
- 36:50Speaker 2: to capture everything that happens in college football in a
- 36:52Speaker 2: twelve game span and then figure out what the twelve
- 36:55Speaker 2: best teams are out of one hundred and thirty six
- 36:58Speaker 2: to play for the for the. Championship, again like last,
- 37:02Speaker 2: Year miami barely made the field and made it all
- 37:06Speaker 2: the way to the national championship. Game in, football we
- 37:08Speaker 2: keep getting evidence that the way that we've done things
- 37:11Speaker 2: hasn't really been, sufficient and we just don't have enough
- 37:14Speaker 2: evidence from the regular. SEASON i don't think to tell
- 37:16Speaker 2: us definitively by the end of a twelve game. Season
- 37:19Speaker 2: SO i am one of those people THAT i am the.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Enemy i've been told BECAUSE i am fine with expansion
- 37:26Speaker 2: in both, sports AND i think it actually be better
- 37:28Speaker 2: and gives a lot more fan bases something to be
- 37:30Speaker 2: excited about when tournament time comes. Around So i'm happy
- 37:34Speaker 2: to wear the crown of the, ENEMY i guess in
- 37:36Speaker 2: this case Because i'm all for the extra.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Opportunity, Yeah i'm not for, it but not also not
- 37:40Speaker 1: one of the people that necessarily is going to make
- 37:43Speaker 1: some grand proclamation that the tournament's, ruined, because LIKE i,
- 37:47Speaker 1: said at the end of the, day once we get
- 37:49Speaker 1: to the nitty gritty of, it everyone's going to tune,
- 37:51Speaker 1: In everyone's going to be. Excited everyone who's in their
- 37:53Speaker 1: survivor pool or their bracket challenge is still going to
- 37:56Speaker 1: be locked. In THE tv ratings will still be. GREAT i.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Mean the only thing that concerns me specific to college,
- 38:03Speaker 1: basketball and maybe the same in college football depending on
- 38:06Speaker 1: if they go to twenty, four is does it diminish
- 38:09Speaker 1: the regular? Season because for college basketball to, me like
- 38:12Speaker 1: specific To, indiana it's felt like since we've lost some
- 38:15Speaker 1: of the things like The Big TEN Acc, challenge The Gavit,
- 38:17Speaker 1: games it almost feels Like november And december outside of
- 38:21Speaker 1: the Two Big ten, games and maybe this is specific
- 38:23Speaker 1: To indiana and how they've, scheduled but the season hasn't
- 38:27Speaker 1: really seemed to take on any meaning Until Big ten
- 38:30Speaker 1: play starts, Up and SO i wonder if you, know
- 38:33Speaker 1: by letting more teams, in if you diminished the regular season.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Anyway but, again it's only eight more, Teams so that's
- 38:39Speaker 1: a whole nother. Discussion but that's kind of my only
- 38:42Speaker 1: pushback on.
- 38:42Speaker 2: IT i, mean my response to, THAT i think it's
- 38:47Speaker 2: a reasonable perspective is the regular seasons in both of
- 38:52Speaker 2: these sports are not great, anyway regardless of what the
- 38:56Speaker 2: postseason looks. Like and you, know this is where again
- 39:00Speaker 2: WHEN i go back to the college football side of,
- 39:02Speaker 2: things the conferences are too big and you only play
- 39:06Speaker 2: at home or, away like there's not a round. Robin
- 39:09Speaker 2: it's an incomplete picture a college. Basketball you, know most
- 39:14Speaker 2: college basketball programs at the power conference level schedule a
- 39:17Speaker 2: bunch of games that their fans don't want so that
- 39:20Speaker 2: they can make ticket revenue to pay for everything. Else
- 39:24Speaker 2: no one seems to care about. That, Like i'm less
- 39:27Speaker 2: concerned about seventy six teams and more concerned about the
- 39:30Speaker 2: number of low major opponents that Most Power conference teams
- 39:33Speaker 2: play on a yearly, basis and when my ticket package
- 39:36Speaker 2: comes in THAT i just renewed FROM iu, BASKETBALL i
- 39:40Speaker 2: know there's going to be about seven or eight games
- 39:43Speaker 2: That i'm paying good money for THAT i could frankly
- 39:46Speaker 2: care less. About you, know you.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Can't you. Can't you can't sell those games, EITHER i
- 39:50Speaker 1: mean if you're a ticket. HOLDER i mean that's that's the.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Thing Is like, yesterday This Diamond cup idea came, out
- 39:55Speaker 1: and it's like the first THING i start Seeing in
- 39:57Speaker 1: responses to the brief rite, up it, was, well there
- 40:01Speaker 1: goes even less reason for me to have season tickets
- 40:04Speaker 1: to buy you. BASKETBALL i mean The marque home games
- 40:06Speaker 1: the last two seasons have been Like South carolina And Kansas. State,
- 40:11Speaker 1: YEAH i MEAN i want to get excited about that's a.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Problem it, is and SO i. AM i find it to.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Be you WERE i just want to make clear you
- 40:19Speaker 1: were not making this, argument but you were bringing it.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Up but when people argue that expanding the postseason diminishes
- 40:26Speaker 1: the regular season in either of these, Sports i'm, like
- 40:28Speaker 1: that sounds. Great why don't we fix the regular season
- 40:30Speaker 1: first and then talk about, that because it's we are
- 40:35Speaker 1: hanging on to scheduling practices and principles that are, two,
- 40:40Speaker 1: three four decades out of date because there's nobody in
- 40:43Speaker 1: charge of either. Sport there's, nobody there's nobody in charge
- 40:47Speaker 1: of how this stuff. Operates AND i would take the
- 40:50Speaker 1: arguments that the regular season is being diminished more seriously
- 40:54Speaker 1: if anybody was around to be accountable for what they've
- 40:57Speaker 1: done to the regular seasons in both. Sports, YEAH i
- 41:00Speaker 1: MEAN i think college. BASKETBALL i mean The Big, ten for,
- 41:03Speaker 1: example there's eighteen. Teams how much different would the regular
- 41:06Speaker 1: season and The Big ten feel like if there was
- 41:08Speaker 1: twenty four to twenty eight regular Season Big ten? Games
- 41:10Speaker 1: you actually get close to a regular Season Big ten
- 41:14Speaker 1: champion that, was you, know actually won the title by
- 41:18Speaker 1: playing a somewhat equitable. Schedule same thing with. Football what
- 41:21Speaker 1: if there was actually Twelve Big ten conference games in
- 41:24Speaker 1: football rather than you, KNOW i understand Why indiana schedules
- 41:28Speaker 1: like it does in a non, conference but the season
- 41:30Speaker 1: doesn't start until game. Four the three three first, games
- 41:33Speaker 1: especially Utter signetty maybe Under prereister, games those games could
- 41:37Speaker 1: have been, competitive but they're going to walk through the
- 41:39Speaker 1: first three games and then we're going to start learning
- 41:41Speaker 1: something in potentially game.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Four there are three. Teams indiana gets homes and home
- 41:47Speaker 2: and away games versus in the basketball season this, Year, Maryland,
- 41:51Speaker 2: northwestern And.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Purdue so every other game.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Is either you will either play the other team at
- 41:58Speaker 2: home only or away. Only this is this is not
- 42:02Speaker 2: apples versus. Oranges this is like apples versus. Dolphins like
- 42:06Speaker 2: there's no there's no how do you compare in? It?
- 42:09Speaker 2: Right conference records are essentially meaningless because there's no comparative,
- 42:15Speaker 2: points or very few comparative points in terms of how
- 42:19Speaker 2: good these teams actually. Are so this is actually to
- 42:23Speaker 2: me a great argument for expanding the postseasons in both,
- 42:26Speaker 2: sports because the conferences have gotten so big and there
- 42:29Speaker 2: are so few actual comparative points team to. Team i'd
- 42:33Speaker 2: rather put them all in a tournament at the end
- 42:35Speaker 2: of the, day because that at least gives us some
- 42:38Speaker 2: opportunity to, say, well these two teams, played and this
- 42:41Speaker 2: team is definitively, better and THAT i think is what
- 42:44Speaker 2: we're supposed to be doing in.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Postseasons. Anyway for, sure you've talked me into, It, Klen
- 42:49Speaker 1: i'm coming over to your, Side so don't don't let
- 42:51Speaker 1: the national guys go that are know that are upset
- 42:54Speaker 1: about this. Expansion but, again it's it's supposed to be.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Fun it's supposed to be sports when it gets to the.
- 42:59Speaker 1: POSTSEASON i, mean the college football plays last year obviously
- 43:02Speaker 1: biased Because indiana was in and it was a ton
- 43:04Speaker 1: of fun to. Watch same. Thing, hopefully WHEN iu basketball
- 43:07Speaker 1: hopefully gets back in the, tournamently the same. Thing people
- 43:09Speaker 1: will watch, it people will, Enjoy it'll be. Fun.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Well and it's the greatest thing ABOUT iu football winning
- 43:14Speaker 2: the title last year is that there is zero ambiguity
- 43:17Speaker 2: That indiana was the best team in college football last.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Year there's literally nobody has an argument other than they.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Do they didn't lose a. Game they Beat Ohio, state
- 43:27Speaker 2: they Beat, oregon they Beat, alabama they Beat miami in
- 43:31Speaker 2: the title. Game there's so this is the one situation
- 43:35Speaker 2: where even with incomplete, data every computer ranking and all
- 43:39Speaker 2: of the game results indicate That indiana was the best
- 43:42Speaker 2: team in college football last. Year and WHEN i look at,
- 43:45Speaker 2: basketball Like i'll have people, say you, know the tournament,
- 43:50Speaker 2: SITUATION i Think Griffin gonzalez was trying to argue this with.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Me it's, like, well the tournament is a bad way
- 43:54Speaker 2: to decide who the best team in college basketball. Is
- 43:57Speaker 2: and it's, like, well if you're trying to decide, who, like,
- 44:00Speaker 2: definitively without a question or a shadow of a, doubt
- 44:03Speaker 2: is the one hundred percent best team in college. Basketball
- 44:06Speaker 2: there are some flaws because you could have teams lose
- 44:09Speaker 2: before they get to the title game that might be
- 44:11Speaker 2: technically better than the ones that. Did but, again now
- 44:14Speaker 2: you're getting into a situation where there's no real way
- 44:18Speaker 2: to determine definitively this team is the one hundred percent
- 44:22Speaker 2: best unless you play home and away all teams for
- 44:26Speaker 2: the entire, season and even then there's variables you could
- 44:29Speaker 2: throw in there that would make it so that you
- 44:31Speaker 2: couldn't actually. Tell SO i am happy enough with the
- 44:34Speaker 2: way the tournament. Works AND i don't, KNOW i Think
- 44:37Speaker 2: michigan was probably the best team in college basketball this last.
- 44:39Speaker 2: YEAR i think it worked out for.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Sure absolutely, Well, galen thanks for taking the. TIME i
