- 0:54- podcast.
- 0:55- We're thrilled today to be joined by a
- 0:57- fantastic leader who's been with the HSHS
- 1:01- system for a long time now.
- 1:04- Hospital Sisters Health System. I almost never say
- 1:07- that out loud actually versus HSHS.
- 1:09- Chris,
- 1:10- take a moment and tell us a little
- 1:12- bit about
- 1:13- your background
- 1:15- and about the HSHS
- 1:17- system,
- 1:18- and then we'll talk a bit about trends
- 1:20- you're watching, what you're most focused on, and
- 1:22- and a lot more. Thank you for joining
- 1:24- us, Chris. Yeah. Thank you, Scott. I appreciate
- 1:26- the opportunity,
- 1:28- to join you this afternoon. And,
- 1:30- you know, it's it's an honor to to
- 1:31- represent Hospital Sisters Health System. So just a
- 1:34- little bit about me.
- 1:35- So,
- 1:37- as you mentioned, my name is Chris Clay,
- 1:39- and I have the privilege to serve as
- 1:41- the president and CEO for the Southern Illinois
- 1:43- market of Hospital Sisters Health System.
- 1:46- And, you know, we're
- 1:48- geographically,
- 1:49- from a market perspective, we're located,
- 1:52- just East of of Saint Louis, Missouri,
- 1:54- but we are in in Southwestern Illinois.
- 1:57- I've had the privilege of, being with HSHS
- 1:59- since 2009.
- 2:01- My background is physical therapy,
- 2:04- and I served in leadership roles within that
- 2:07- profession for a number of years. But in
- 2:08- 2009, as I joined
- 2:10- Hospital Sisters Health System in the Western Wisconsin
- 2:13- market,
- 2:15- I was quickly,
- 2:16- given the opportunity to transition into,
- 2:19- different hospital operations roles and then progressed into
- 2:23- market operation role operations roles,
- 2:27- connected to rehabilitation services, but
- 2:30- other clinical service service
- 2:32- lines such as cardiovascular
- 2:34- services, wound and hypobaric medicine, and things of
- 2:36- that nature. And and then ultimately,
- 2:40- was given the opportunity to step into a
- 2:42- president and CEO role
- 2:44- here in Southern Illinois within our health system.
- 2:47- And then in 2022,
- 2:50- moved to
- 2:51- Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, our tertiary care center in
- 2:54- this market, and then became the market market
- 2:56- president in '23. So it's been,
- 2:59- an outstanding journey within Hospital Sisters Health System.
- 3:02- I
- 3:03- a lot of, praise and thanks
- 3:06- for the executive team for supporting me as
- 3:08- I've grown within,
- 3:10- HSHS.
- 3:11- So just, real quick, just a little bit
- 3:14- about Hospital Sisters Health System. So we are
- 3:16- a, we're a faith based health system,
- 3:19- based out of Springfield, Illinois. We have 13
- 3:21- hospitals, nine
- 3:23- here in Illinois, and then the remainder of
- 3:25- our hospitals are in that Southeastern corner of
- 3:27- Wisconsin, really based out of that Green Bay
- 3:29- market.
- 3:30- I I'm proud to say that HSHS,
- 3:32- we've been,
- 3:34- here, in The United States for January.
- 3:38- In 2025,
- 3:39- we celebrated our one hundred and fiftieth anniversary.
- 3:42- So
- 3:43- we we've been privileged to, serve communities in
- 3:46- Illinois and Wisconsin for one hundred and fifty
- 3:48- years, and we're just proud of the great
- 3:50- work that we do and truly, you know,
- 3:53- taking care of,
- 3:54- the local people,
- 3:56- who who live and work in the communities
- 3:58- where our hospitals are. So that's a bit
- 3:59- about me and a bit about our health
- 4:01- system.
- 4:02- Thank you. In a in a remarkable health
- 4:03- system and in Green Bay, you mentioned Green
- 4:05- Bay, doctor Rai, Ashok Rai is the CEO
- 4:08- there. Correct?
- 4:09- Absolutely. Doctor Ashok Rai is the president and
- 4:12- CEO of Prevea Health.
- 4:14- So Prevea is the,
- 4:17- the medical group side of Hospital Sisters Health
- 4:20- System in that Green Bay market.
- 4:22- My peer from, the hospital based market president
- 4:26- is Bob Erickson, and he's been in that
- 4:28- market for a couple years and is doing
- 4:30- great work in partnership with doctor Rai and
- 4:32- his team with Prevea.
- 4:35- No. A great, great team. I I know
- 4:36- doctor Rai well and just a fantastic leader.
- 4:39- And doctor and Bob Erickson, I know the
- 4:41- name and I know him, but not as
- 4:42- well. But doctor Rai is fantastic.
- 4:44- And what a great system, and the Preface
- 4:46- system is fantastic.
- 4:47- Talk about
- 4:49- I what what I'd love to dig into
- 4:51- first is you started as a physical therapist.
- 4:53- You're now CEO of of of a large
- 4:56- part of a great, great system.
- 4:58- Talk a bit about sort of that evolution
- 5:02- and and was it incremental?
- 5:04- At what point did you see yourself sort
- 5:06- of out of being direct in patient care
- 5:08- at PT? And I know you're still very
- 5:10- involved to make sure patients get great care
- 5:12- and into leadership.
- 5:14- What was that evolution like?
- 5:15- Yeah. It's been a it's been a fun
- 5:17- journey, to be honest. But, you know, I
- 5:19- knew early on, that I wanted to be
- 5:22- in health care, and physical therapy was that
- 5:24- profession for me. And it was pretty simple.
- 5:26- I mean, I loved,
- 5:28- you know, taking care of people and helping
- 5:30- people,
- 5:31- you know,
- 5:32- make improvements and advancement as it related to
- 5:34- their as it relates to their just functional
- 5:37- well-being, and physical therapy was that profession.
- 5:40- But I'll tell you,
- 5:42- my first day,
- 5:44- during the new colleague orientation,
- 5:47- at the hospital that I started at, I
- 5:48- I shook the hand of the CEO. And
- 5:51- within five minutes of talking with this gentleman,
- 5:53- I thought to myself, my gosh. This is
- 5:55- what I wanna do. It was before I'd
- 5:57- even seen a patient, interestingly enough. But what
- 6:00- what caught my attention
- 6:02- is,
- 6:03- this individual's
- 6:05- obvious connection to the mission of the organization,
- 6:09- his connect community,
- 6:10- his visibility,
- 6:12- his vision for,
- 6:14- not only what the that organization was doing
- 6:17- in the moment, but where they needed to
- 6:18- go in the future. And it was just
- 6:19- captivating for me. So, you know, he he
- 6:22- caught my attention early.
- 6:24- And and I would say, as I stepped
- 6:26- into my career as a physical therapist,
- 6:28- I found that I absolutely love the clinical
- 6:31- side of the work, but I even appreciated
- 6:34- the business development side and the growth aspect
- 6:37- of our work
- 6:38- even even more.
- 6:40- And and that has a lot to do
- 6:41- with the opportunities that you're given, you know,
- 6:43- as a as a clinician.
- 6:45- So I was quickly tasked with, you know,
- 6:48- developing service lines,
- 6:50- developing new partnerships with external stakeholders.
- 6:53- I was given the opportunity to
- 6:55- to, take the lead on on building and
- 6:57- implementing two new primary care practice locations in
- 7:01- the region where where I was working, which
- 7:03- included, of course, primary primary care, family medicine,
- 7:06- but
- 7:07- laboratory services, radiology services, rehabilitation.
- 7:11- And it was from there that I just
- 7:13- realized
- 7:14- how much I appreciated the business development and
- 7:16- growth side of this work,
- 7:18- along with,
- 7:20- the fact that, you know, the patients are
- 7:21- at the center of all this. That's why
- 7:23- we that's why we truly do the work,
- 7:24- to be honest. But and then from there,
- 7:28- early success, you know, kind of created ongoing
- 7:31- opportunities and doors just really
- 7:33- started to open for me and,
- 7:36- great mentorship at the right time and the
- 7:38- right place. And Hospital Sisters Health System said
- 7:41- yes,
- 7:42- and and then I ran with it. So
- 7:44- it's been it's been an interesting path, but
- 7:47- exciting, to be honest.
- 7:48- You're in Springfield now. Are you located in
- 7:51- Springfield now? So I am physically located,
- 7:54- in Southwestern Illinois. So right now, I'm at
- 7:57- Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in O'Fallon, Illinois. So we
- 7:59- are just across the Mississippi outside of Saint
- 8:02- Louis, Missouri.
- 8:04- And that was the question. Is it hard
- 8:06- to be in what is really Saint Louis
- 8:08- Cardinals territory
- 8:10- versus Cubs territory, or are you more of
- 8:13- a Wisconsin fan? Where where is your head
- 8:16- at on that? Yeah. So my gosh. That
- 8:17- is a loaded question.
- 8:19- So I grew up in Northwestern Wisconsin. So,
- 8:22- you know, the Green Bay Packers, that is
- 8:23- a nonnegotiable.
- 8:25- But I will tell you, you know, I
- 8:26- grew up when the, you know, the Minnesota
- 8:28- Twins were playing the Saint Louis Cardinals in
- 8:31- the World Series, and there is this this
- 8:33- amazing shortstop
- 8:34- from Saint Louis that would run out the
- 8:37- dugout in between innings and do a, you
- 8:39- know, a backflip before he stopped at the
- 8:41- short stop position, and that, of course, is
- 8:43- Ozzie Smith.
- 8:44- So when when The wizard. Yes. The wizard.
- 8:47- And when my family and I relocated to,
- 8:50- to Southern Illinois,
- 8:52- the first weekend we were here, we went
- 8:54- to a Milwaukee Brewers game at, Busch Stadium
- 8:57- in Saint Louis. And by the fourth inning,
- 8:59- we were racing to the, Cardinal Store to
- 9:02- get cardinal to buy to purchase cardinal's t
- 9:04- shirts and hats. So we converted immediately,
- 9:07- to to becoming a Saint Louis Cardinals fan.
- 9:10- You love it. Yeah. It was it was
- 9:12- kinda it was pretty fun. To be honest,
- 9:15- people ask me that question a lot, and
- 9:16- I and I say to Saint Louis Cardinals,
- 9:19- just the history and the legacy,
- 9:22- that goes along with that organization
- 9:24- really kinda mirrors the Green Bay Packers a
- 9:26- little bit. So it's you you can't not
- 9:28- love the Saint Louis Cardinals being in being
- 9:30- in this area. So, anyway, that's Love it.
- 9:33- Love it. No. The Cardinals do have a
- 9:35- great history. It's a well run organization. It
- 9:36- has been for a long time. That part
- 9:39- of Central Southern Illinois sort of goes back
- 9:41- and forth between whether people are Cardinals fans
- 9:43- or Cubs fans. And and the Packers at
- 9:46- one time
- 9:47- at one
- 9:48- time, that was a great franchise.
- 9:51- So I I I I I admire
- 9:54- you're sticking with them
- 9:56- when they were at one time a great,
- 9:58- great franchise. I could not agree with you
- 10:00- more. Yeah. It's been it's,
- 10:03- it's just interesting how
- 10:05- sports bring people together,
- 10:08- and it just it's a it's a great
- 10:10- stepping off point when you meet somebody new
- 10:12- because you've got something to talk about right
- 10:14- away. So it's just kinda fun. But,
- 10:16- a 100 and what and what an Illinois
- 10:18- person says, Chris,
- 10:20- that Green Bay at one time was great.
- 10:23- Yeah.
- 10:26- You realize that that's not meant as
- 10:29- trying to even get a rise out of
- 10:30- your but snotty as out there, man. Oh,
- 10:32- I love that. Exactly.
- 10:35- So so tell us about currently,
- 10:38- what trends are you watching most closely? What
- 10:40- are you most focused on? And then tell
- 10:42- us a little bit about what you're most
- 10:44- excited about going forward this year and into
- 10:46- next year. Yeah. So
- 10:48- just when I look at, you know, my
- 10:50- role as the market president for HSHS in
- 10:52- Southern Illinois, there are four hospitals in my
- 10:54- market.
- 10:56- You know, geographically, we're located in O'Fallon, Illinois,
- 10:59- Breeze, Illinois, Highland, Illinois, and then Greenville, Illinois.
- 11:03- So we are, you know, we're we're right
- 11:05- there, on the the border of of, St.
- 11:08- Louis.
- 11:09- And what's really exciting for me about our
- 11:12- market is
- 11:14- we are realizing exceptional growth. And I'm and
- 11:16- I'm I'm thinking about that that met that
- 11:19- metric that's on our balanced scorecard that is
- 11:21- a true indicator of are you growing or
- 11:24- not from a utilization perspective? Are more people
- 11:27- choosing you today
- 11:29- compared to yesterday?
- 11:31- And when I look at our market as
- 11:32- a whole, you know, we have seen
- 11:35- that more people are saying yes to HSHS
- 11:38- Southern Illinois than than historically have in the
- 11:40- past.
- 11:41- That's exciting for me because we have been
- 11:43- very, very focused on
- 11:46- physician recruitment, and we've had some nice success
- 11:49- with that. And and and when I say
- 11:50- physician recruitment,
- 11:52- yes, it's primary care. That that will always
- 11:55- be an important part of our physician recruitment
- 11:58- plan, but we have had exceptional success in
- 12:00- the in the specialty market, meaning,
- 12:03- you know, cardiovascular
- 12:04- professionals and all of the specialties within that
- 12:08- discipline,
- 12:09- gastroenterology,
- 12:10- orthopedics,
- 12:12- pulmonology,
- 12:13- you know, some of those key specialties,
- 12:16- that we haven't
- 12:17- had great access to historically. So patients have
- 12:19- had to exit our market for that care.
- 12:22- Through that success, we're seeing true growth and
- 12:26- improved utilization
- 12:27- of of all four of our hospitals, as
- 12:29- well as our medical group.
- 12:31- The HSHS Medical Group is the is our
- 12:33- physician enterprise, in Southern Illinois. It would be
- 12:36- the parallel or the equivalent to Prevea, in
- 12:39- Wisconsin.
- 12:40- So that's exciting to me. Now the opportunity
- 12:43- or what we're focused on, Scott, is
- 12:45- as utilization goes up,
- 12:48- as volume goes up,
- 12:49- we have to continually become more efficient
- 12:52- and better operators,
- 12:54- of our hospital and our and and those
- 12:56- services that we provide,
- 12:57- whether it's surgical services or access to radiology
- 13:01- services, laboratory services,
- 13:03- you know, we are being forced in a
- 13:06- good way to be really efficient
- 13:09- around access. Here's a really good example.
- 13:12- Three months ago, you know,
- 13:14- we had
- 13:16- 800
- 13:17- MRI
- 13:18- orders
- 13:20- in the queue. And what that means is
- 13:22- there were 800 patients in this region that
- 13:25- had an order for an MRI scan that
- 13:27- were waiting to be scheduled in one of
- 13:29- our hospitals.
- 13:30- And we all know for a for an
- 13:32- MRI, it's just one modality, it's one service,
- 13:35- but it's it's a it's it's an example
- 13:36- of why access is really important. There are
- 13:39- plenty of options for all of us as
- 13:41- patients to go have an MRI done, but
- 13:43- it was an eye opener for me.
- 13:45- We've got 800 patients that want to come
- 13:47- to one of our hospitals, and they are
- 13:50- waiting. But what I know for sure is
- 13:52- they're not gonna wait long or wait for
- 13:54- long.
- 13:55- So we,
- 13:56- in turn, looked internally,
- 13:58- to make sure that our our revenue cycle
- 14:00- practices were were up and operational efficient. So
- 14:03- revenue cycle is scheduling, insurance verification,
- 14:08- prior authorization, billing, coding, collection, all those things.
- 14:12- We also looked at, you know, block scheduling
- 14:14- within within Epic for for MRI.
- 14:18- Our you know, were our scheduling blocks consistent
- 14:22- across our market, meaning, you know, a non
- 14:24- contrast MRI for a shoulder.
- 14:27- Are we scheduling an hour
- 14:29- in all four of our hospitals, or are
- 14:30- we scheduling an hour in O'Fallon and and
- 14:32- an hour and a half in in Breeze?
- 14:35- So we really, you know, looked at
- 14:37- our scheduling platform to make sure it was
- 14:39- the most efficient and most effective.
- 14:41- And then, of course, you know, the call
- 14:43- center. You know, how are we how are
- 14:46- we pulling those patients in to get them
- 14:49- actually scheduled in one of our hospitals? So,
- 14:53- it it is an example of,
- 14:55- yes, we've got the volume. More patients are
- 14:57- choosing us, but my gosh, you can lose
- 14:59- that momentum if patients can't get in when
- 15:02- they believe they need to get in. So
- 15:04- that's what we're excited about.
- 15:05- So we've got good momentum.
- 15:07- But
- 15:08- what we're focused on is, as we've grown,
- 15:11- it's forced us to be, you know, hyper
- 15:13- efficient, which is great for us organizationally.
- 15:17- You know, the other thing is I I
- 15:19- use the MRI example. You know, we're looking
- 15:21- at throughput metrics and processes around, you know,
- 15:24- how quickly patients
- 15:25- safely move through the emergency department experience.
- 15:28- When you get into surgery,
- 15:30- the importance of first case on time starts,
- 15:33- the importance of cleaning and turning ORs over
- 15:36- in a timely manner,
- 15:38- the importance of prime time utilization, meaning, you
- 15:41- know, how efficiently are you utilizing your operating
- 15:43- rooms between 7AM and 3PM, which is the,
- 15:47- you know, the the sweet spot of the
- 15:49- day or the prime time of the day.
- 15:51- So, again, those are just some of the
- 15:53- examples of, you know, what are we focused
- 15:56- on,
- 15:57- to make sure that
- 15:59- our patients have,
- 16:00- number one, high quality care, but they've got
- 16:02- access when they believe they need it, and
- 16:04- that we're the best piece place to be,
- 16:07- for physicians.
- 16:09- Because, again,
- 16:10- patients have choice, but so do our docs.
- 16:14- Chris, let me ask you this question because
- 16:15- you mentioned about e access. If patients can't
- 16:17- find access when they want it, then ultimately,
- 16:20- they find other options, particularly in today's world
- 16:22- where people find virtual options, other options, other
- 16:25- places to go. Yes. How important is that
- 16:27- that to customer experience?
- 16:29- You get people in generally when they wanna
- 16:31- get in. And, obviously, there's some weights, but
- 16:33- but how important is that that access issue?
- 16:36- I to me, it's, it's extremely important. You
- 16:39- know, from a from a leadership perspective,
- 16:43- you know, we talk a lot about
- 16:45- there are three things in my mind that
- 16:47- are really important, and we have to be
- 16:49- very focused on if we're gonna be relevant
- 16:52- in the eyes of our patients as a
- 16:53- as a provider.
- 16:55- First is quality. We've got an obligation
- 16:57- to keep our patients safe and to take
- 17:00- great care of them. Thankfully, we've got a
- 17:02- long tradition of doing just that. And the
- 17:04- second is access.
- 17:06- We've been talking in health care for many
- 17:07- years that our patients are now consumers.
- 17:10- It's real. They are. Our patients have choices.
- 17:12- They have options. If they can't can't get
- 17:14- in
- 17:15- with us today for an MRI,
- 17:17- they can drive literally right down the street
- 17:19- and have that MRI done with someone else.
- 17:22- So access is vital. And then the final
- 17:24- is cost. You know, our patients are are
- 17:27- much more cost sensitive than they ever have
- 17:29- been,
- 17:30- and that's okay. You know? So for us,
- 17:33- to be relevant
- 17:34- and to be successful,
- 17:36- quality is number one. We've gotta have that.
- 17:38- We've gotta have access that meets the expectations
- 17:41- of our patients, and we've gotta provide our
- 17:43- services at a price point that's market relevant
- 17:47- and that feels
- 17:49- worth it in the eyes of our patients.
- 17:51- 100%. And and trying to hit that mix
- 17:53- of cost quality access at the right time
- 17:56- at the right place,
- 17:57- a constant real leadership
- 17:59- challenge today. And the fact that you're recruiting
- 18:02- specialist primary care, trying to make sure you
- 18:04- can provide that access and keep on evolving
- 18:06- with it is so, so important.
- 18:08- I wanna thank you, Chris, for joining us
- 18:10- today on the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 18:12- Amazing leadership.
- 18:14- I'm a huge fan of both yourself,
- 18:16- doctor Rai,
- 18:17- Ashok, and and the and the system,
- 18:20- even if not a huge fan of the
- 18:22- Green Bay Packers, but still huge, huge fans
- 18:24- of yours and HSHS.
- 18:26- Well, Scott, thank you for the opportunity. As
- 18:28- I as I said at the outset here
- 18:30- this afternoon,
- 18:32- it's a privilege to to be with, Hospital
- 18:35- Sisters Health System, and I couldn't be more
- 18:37- proud of the good work that we do,
- 18:39- not only here in Southern Illinois, but but
- 18:41- across Illinois and and and up into the
- 18:43- Green Bay market.
- 18:45- Leadership in health care has always been challenging.
- 18:47- That's that's a reality, but I do think,
- 18:49- you know, some of the challenges that we're
- 18:51- up against right now are are new. But
- 18:54- that's okay. That's what we're that's what we're
- 18:55- built for, and and it's,
- 18:58- it's it's an opportunity.
- 19:00- So thanks for the time today. It's been
- 19:01- it's been great.
- 19:03- Thank you for joining us. Remarkable leadership at
- 19:05- your system. Thank you so much for joining
- 19:07- us. Thank you. Yep. Have a great afternoon.
- 19:09- Thank you.
