Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 148, can you believe it? Lucas: I know. We've been to the market a few times already — eggs, tomatoes, onions. But today, we're going for something sweet. Luna: Ooh, I like sweet. What is it? Lucas: Sugar. In Swahili, sugar is 'sukari'. Luna: Sukari. That sounds nice. Sukari. Lucas: Exactly. So to say 'I want sugar', you say 'Nataka sukari'. Luna: Nataka sukari. Easy. Nataka sukari. Lucas: Right. Now, at the market, the seller might ask 'Sukari ngapi?' — how much sugar? Luna: Sukari ngapi? So they want to know how many kilos or packets. Lucas: Exactly. You can answer with a number and the unit. For example, 'Sukari kilo moja, tafadhali' — one kilo of sugar, please. Luna: Sukari kilo moja, tafadhali. So 'kilo moja' is one kilo. Lucas: Yes. And 'tafadhali' is please. You can also say 'sukari kilo mbili' for two kilos, but let's stick with one for now. Luna: Got it. Sukari kilo moja, tafadhali. Lucas: Then you'll ask 'Bei gani?' — how much is it? Luna: We've heard that before. Bei gani. That's 'what price'. Lucas: Yes. And when you pay, you say 'Asante sana' — thank you very much. Luna: Asante sana. So the whole thing: Nataka sukari. Sukari kilo moja, tafadhali. Bei gani? Asante sana. Lucas: Perfect. Let's practice a mini scene. Imagine we're at the market. I'm the seller, you're the buyer. Luna: Okay. I'll start. Nataka sukari. Lucas: Sukari ngapi? Luna: Sukari kilo moja, tafadhali. Lucas: Bei gani? I mean, I should ask that. Luna: Let me repeat. Bei gani? Lucas: It's shilingi mia moja. One hundred shillings. Luna: Then I say asante sana. Lucas: Asante sana. You got it. So let's say it all together one more time. Luna: Nataka sukari. Sukari kilo moja, tafadhali. Bei gani? Asante sana. Lucas: Beautiful. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's review today's phrases one more time. Luna: Sure. Nataka sukari. Lucas: Sukari ngapi? Luna: Sukari kilo moja, tafadhali. Lucas: Bei gani? Luna: Asante sana. Lucas: Perfect. Practice those before your next market trip. And we'll see you next time on Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Luna: Bye bye!
